resistance by
Erianto
curated by
Rifky Effendi
Erianto’s works show a fresh artistic approach, pushing the limits of paintings created through meticulous technique of hyper-realism with (the impression of) objects in the form of cardboard packages and crate packing. He pushed his paintings to their limit and explored their boundaries. His works blurred the paintings with objects or two-dimensional artwork and three-dimensional artwork.

His works also represent issues from the social realm of the Indonesian art world, in its relation with the global art map, the international world of art, and mainstream art markets. All of these issues are presented through various elements spread all across the “packages”- courier stickers, logos, symbols, warning labels, masking tapes, wooden frames, etc.

Erianto’s package paintings contain layered meanings because they are also related with art institutions in the world’s art centers, especially in North America and Europe, and their relationship with local art practices. These ‘packages’, therefore, has to do with the position of Indonesian art in the international art arena. Erianto makes fun of such conditions, thinking how works by Indonesian artists might not been well-received, known to, or even rejected by the world’s most-prominent art institutions. Erianto’s criticism through his package paintings reflects the irony within the development of global art that is not in harmony with local conditions. Or perhaps it is the development of art on the local level that fails to adapt.
