ARLINGTON MOM LIFE

Just eight weeks after relocating her family to Arlington in 2024, Janelle Pierce, 35, welcomed her second daughter. With a new baby in a new state and no village, she formed her own community, founding the Arlington Chapter of The Mom Walk Collective, which gathers moms together at least twice a month for walks or playdates and to share stories of motherhood. The Pierce family has found the city to be friendly and welcoming, and a convenient location for the necessities for raising kids. “We feel like we have everything we could ever need at our fingertips,” she says.

Janelle’s Arlington Faves

FAMILY FUN

BEST PARK

“We love going to Veteran’s Park for longer walks and time on the playground. We also go to Meadowbrook Park for lots of active play on their inclusive playground equipment.”

GOOD EATS

“We love Twisted Root Burger Co. because of its laid-back atmosphere. We enjoy watching a game with great food and drinks at The Tipsy Oak’s outdoor seating. And we just discovered Papaya Mexican Grill, and love how friendly the staff is.”

CARROLLTON MOM LIFE

After moving around the Dallas area for a little over a decade, Emily Villaseca, 35, settled into Carrollton two years ago to put down roots while raising her three boys. The dietician and founder of Pass the Chia was drawn to the city’s amenities and room to grow. “Carrollton has a slower pace and wide-open space that is hard to come by in Dallas. At the same time, you’ve got easy access to so many DFW essentials—your choice of airports, a day trip to the Stockyards or zoo, or staying very local and enjoyingdowntown Carrollton—there are options for everyone.”

Emily’s Carrollton Picks

FAMILY OUTING

“With three very active little boys, getting outside and romping around is a must. We take time every weekend to head to a park to bike, play soccer, fly kites, or enjoy the playgrounds. Our favorite is Harvest Run Park. The playground is covered, a critical element for hot summer days. There’s also a huge open space that’s perfect for flying kites, a great loop for scooting or riding bikes, and we always end our trip by picking out a book from the Free Little Library there.”

KID-FRIENDLY RESTAURANTS

“Cane Rosso in downtown Carrollton. Pizza is an easy sell for my kids and the environment is enjoyable for the whole family. You get delicious pizza and afterwards you can run around the square or grab ice cream from Beth Marie’s just down the street. We also love Munay, the best Peruvian restaurant we’ve found on this side of the Metroplex. My husband is Peruvian and we’re so glad we have a restaurant right

down the street where we can share authentic Peruvian food with our kids.”

DATE NIGHT

“One of our favorite date nights was dinner at a small place off Trinity Mills called The Island Spot The whole experience is a tribute to the Caribbean, and you’ll get authentic Jamaican food you won’t find anywhere else. We paired this with a movie but you could also put a quirky spin on date night and follow dinner with a competition at Nickle Mania, an arcade in the same shopping complex.”

ANNUAL ATTRACTIONS

➽ THE TOP FESTIVALS & THINGS TO DO WITH KIDS EVERY YEAR

➽ JANUARY DAY 1 DFW

Start off each new year on the right foot: having fun with the kids and contributing to a worthy cause. This annual event does both. Dallas-based nonprofit Vogel Alcove, which raises money to help serve local children and their families experiencing homelessness, throws this family festival inside Irving Convention Center with multiple floors of activities

and entertainment, from obstacle course and a neon glow dance party to live animals and live bands. And it typically doesn’t start until noon, so you can still sleep in. 214/368-8686; vogelalcove.org

FORT WORTH STOCK SHOW & RODEO

Many thousands of ranchers and festival-goers alike descend upon the Will Rogers Memorial Center for this annual event

series, which is steeped in Cowtown tradition going back to 1896. During a little over three weeks each January and February, you can get a taste of the farm life through the stock shows, a taste of corndogs at the carnival, and loads of kids activities. 817/8772420; fwssr.com

USA FILM FESTIVAL’S KIDFILM

It seems that every major city has its own film festival,

and this one here in Dallas is just for kids. KidFilm rents out a theater (typically Angelika Film Center) to play a series of films made for young audiences. Some are short, others long, some are animated, others are live action—it’s always a mix. Movie admission is always free and so are the book giveaways and author signings by children’s book authors in-person as special guests. FREE 214/821-3456; usafilmfestival.com

➽ FEBRUARY FROST FEST

Even though this is North Texas, we still need a little help in the snow department. So for wintry fun, the City of Irving breaks out its snowmaking machine during this annual play day on the shores of its Lake Carolyn. Don’t miss it for the hours of outdoor snowhill tubing and snowman building. FREE 972/721-2501; irvingevents.org

WORDS ELIZABETH SMITH

HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS

The Globetrotters don’t play for the NFL, but they own the court. Blending basketball with comedy, the exhibition team travels to hundreds of cities and countries, and each February, they faithfully return to the biggest arenas in Dallas and Fort Worth. Their goal is not only to beat their constant rivals, the Washington Generals, but to get the crowd in on the action, inviting kids on the court before the game to shoot hoops and learn their tricks. harlemglobetrotters.com

DALLAS BLOOMS

Gardens are loved for their flowers, and Dallas Arboretum does flowers best, especially in the spring. Typically from February to April, the Dallas Blooms festival showcases its seas of tulips and hosts a roster of kids activities in the main garden and around the Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden (which is now free with general admission). Come back to this top-rated garden throughout the year for more seasonal festivals like fall pumpkins. 214/5156615; dallasarboretum.org

TULIPALOOZA

Speaking of tulips, here you can pick them straight from the ground and take them home. It’s a pickyour-own flower farm at a Waxahachie park, and a big destination for families and photographers alike to grab a basket and walk the row upon row of colorful blooms. The weather at this time of year can be volatile, so don’t wait to visit. Half of proceeds from day passes go to local charities. tulipalooza.org

downtown Haggard Park, with all sorts of Texasthemed entertainment. You can expect toy calf roping for kids, live music by Texas country artists, photo ops and barbecue. And Plano isn’t the only one. Carrollton throws a mean Tex fest in March too. FREE texasforeverfest.com; cityofcarrollton.com/texfest

COWTOWN GOES GREEN

The Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District is a hoot and a holler any time of year with its live rodeo every weekend, daily cattle drives, petting zoo and train stop on the Grapevine Vintage Railroad. But on the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day, the Stockyards tips its hat to Irish culture with extra fun, like live clogging groups, armadillo races and a green parade. FREE 817/624-4741; fortworthstockyards.com

SPRING BREAK AT THE NASHER

For local families who are staying put for spring break week and looking for free kids’ entertainment out of the heat, don’t overlook the world-class art museums in DFW such as Nasher Sculpture Center. Educators will lead your kids through tours and activities, or explore at your own pace through the sculpture garden. Come back every month for the Nasher’s free First Saturday events too. FREE 214/242-5100; nashersculpturecenter.org

➽ APRIL

EARTH DAY FESTIVAL

SCARBOROUGH

RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL

Dressing up for this isn’t required, but your kids will have a lot more fun transforming into a princess or knight while exploring this replica 16th-century English village. You’ll find it in the Waxahachie woods where they’ll encounter lounging mermaids, see jousting in action, and enjoy a go-round on “human-powered” rides. Open weekends from April through Memorial Day. 972/938-3247; srfestival.com

MAIN ST. FORT WORTH

ARTS FESTIVAL

Big arts festivals like this one are not only a prime place to discover and support local artists but also to find plenty of quality craft activities for kids. This four-day festival spans 18 blocks through downtown Fort Worth—that’s a lot of brick-paved streets to cover. But you can save your steps by heading straight to the TCC Makers Zone near the Tarrant County Courthouse. FREE 817/336-2787; mainstreetartsfest.org

➽ MAY

➽ MARCH

TEXAS FOREVER FEST

In honor of Texas Independence Day (March 2, 1836), the City of Plano throws a huge party at the

Like the rise and fall of the sun, you can rely on River Legacy Nature Center in Arlington to celebrate Earth Day with this annual kid-friendly event. Here they’ll make eco-crafts, go on guided nature walks through River Legacy Park, and—always the highlight—meet plenty of animal ambassadors inside the nature center, whose Discovery Room too has more ways to get kids interested in environmental issues. FREE 817/8606752; riverlegacy.org

MAYFEST

At Fort Worth’s Trinity Park overlooking the river and downtown cityscape, this four-day festival features carnival rides, concerts, a full children’s area, and some other more unusual entertainers, like live duck races and Twiggy the Water Skiing Squirrel (yes, that’s real). It’s always the first weekend in May, so mark your calendars. 817/3321055;  mayfest.org

the Flintstones? Maybe not, but they can pedal a car like Fred in this adorable car race for preschoolers. It’s only 500 inches down Wylie’s Ballard Avenue in downtown. Trophies are on the line, but it’s all in good fun (on provided cars) and proceeds benefit Special Olympics. 972/516-6016; wylietexas.gov

MAIN STREET FEST

Grapevine may be known as the Christmas Capital of Texas, but that’s far from the only visit you’ll want to visit its historic downtown. Each May, they shut down the streets to traffic for this epic festival. In 2025, they expanded their kids’ area with even more games and activities. 817/4103185; grapevinetexasusa.com

➽ JUNE

MESQUITE PRO RODEO

Though lesser known than the rodeos at Fort Worth Stockyards, this summer rodeo series in Mesquite (the official Rodeo Capital of Texas) kicks up on serious dust on Saturdays June through August. Inside an air-conditioned arena, you’ll witness cowboys and cowgirls compete in roping, racing and riding. For more action, sign up your child to compete in mutton bustin’, open to kids 5 to 7 years old. 972/2858777;  mesquiterodeo.com

PARADE OF PLAYHOUSES

How would you like to have a hobbit hole in your own backyard? Or a spaceship? Every year, local architec ture firms design oneof-a-kind playhouses and display them at NorthPark Center.

There are fireworks and then there are fireworks that really fill up the sky. This nationally recognized Independence Day show is one of the largest around DFW, and very much kidfriendly with children’s activities and live concerts. It’s always on July 3, so go ahead and write this on your calendar. To watch the show from inside Addison Circle Park, go online early to get your tickets. 972/450-6284; addisonkaboomtown.com

PARKER COUNTY PEACH FESTIVAL

For truckloads of the freshest peaches from local orchards—added and baked into every kind of treat you can think of—head west to Weatherford. Always on the second Saturday in July, the city’s historic downtown features two children’s areas and hundreds of vendors. 817/596-3801; peachfestivaltx.com

➽ AUGUST

DINOSAURS LIVE

They roar, they writhe, they’re animatronic. A small herd of lifelike dinosaurs manufactured by Allen-based Billings Productions go on display at Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary in McKinney. During their half-year residency, you can see them among the bushes of the hiking trail and play in the fossil dig too. Stay tuned for whether the Heard also brings back its Bugs exhibit, which debuted in spring 2025. 972/562-5566; heardmuseum.org

FOAM PARTIES

All during the summer, local water parks like Hawaiian Waters The Colony offer a full calendar of special entertainment (like dive-in movies, luaus, etc.) And these weekly foam parties make a day at the pool extra magical. Because what kid doesn’t love bubbles? Check our calendar for details. hawaiianwaters.com

➽ SEPTEMBER

KIDZ BOP LIVE

It’s the music you know your kids can sing and dance along to without worrying that they’re picking up explicit language, and each summer, a new troupe of teens performs the songs live on a crosscountry tour, which faithfully every year includes the Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory (read: indoor and air conditioned) in Irving. 469/840-9730; kidzbop.com/tour

PLANO BALLOON FESTIVAL

When the weather cooperates and the wind is just right for flight, this hot air balloon festival is a sight to see. Balloons of all sorts of shapes—not just the teardrop but animal shapes like a zebra head or moose antlers—launch at dawn from Oak Point Park, and the pilots offer tethered balloon rides too. 972/8677566; planoballoonfest.org

STATE FAIR OF TEXAS

The state fair is so much more than fried foods. During September and October at Dallas’ Fair Park, you’ll encounter livestock barns, kid-sized games at the Kidway, carnival rides like the park’s historic Texas Star Ferris wheel and hundreds of new and returning entertainers and shows. Whatever you do, don’t forget to snap a family selfie with the 55-foot-tall Big Tex. 214/565-9931; bigtex.com

ADDISON OKTOBERFEST

Texas takes a page out of Bavaria’s playbook with this annual Oktoberfest, with not only loads of pretzels but dachshund races and more kid-focused play in the Kinderzelt (children’s tent). Check it out for kiddie competitions like the Mini Masskrug, holding out a glass stein (filled with water) for as long as you can. 972/450-2800; addisonoktoberfest.com

➽ OCTOBER

DAY OUT WITH THOMAS

The Grapevine Vintage Railroad runs all year between Grapevine and Fort Worth, but each fall, as a special treat for preschoolers, a real-life Thomas the Tank Engine chugs into town and leads the train on a special excursion. During two weekends, come see Thomas and the real-life Sir Topham Hatt, and stay all day to enjoy related train activities and live shows. 866/468-7630; ticketwebdowt.com

on Halloween night, this is a safe alternative to trickor-treating and at one of your kids’ favorite places already: the Fort Worth Zoo. All weekend, with general admission, your kids can stop by treat stations to collect candy and enjoy spooky shows too with ambassador animals. 817/759-7555; fortworthzoo.org

➽ NOVEMBER

ICE!

Every year, Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine pulls out all the stops on their Christmas entertainment, and most years, the cherry on top is ICE!, a frozen exhibition of colorful, walkthrough vignettes. It’s very literally frozen, you’ll need to wear a provided parka to keep warm, and each year is a new theme. (Last year it was Rudolph.) We’ll have to wait and see what’s in store for winter 2025, but plan on it for mid-November through early January. 817/778-1000; christmasatgaylordtexan.com

BUTTERFLY FLUTTERBY

Just when monarch butterflies famously begin their migration south, this party at Grapevine Botanical Garden welcomes kids to enjoy butterfly releases, crafts and science activities. It’s all near the butterfly sculpture, and costumes are encouraged. FREE This event often, but not always, coincides with Grapevine’s Fall Roundup happening at the nearby historic Nash Farm. 817/410-3185, grapevinetexasusa.com

BOO AT THE ZOO

Especially if you’re not too keen on walking through neighborhoods

You know the tradition of the mini train set around the Christmas tree? For several decades running, this “mini” set of 1,600 feet of track and train cars rolling back elaborate models of American landmarks. Here at NorthPark Center, while shopping for Christmas gifts and saying hello to the guitar-playing Santa Claus, you can see it on display from late November to early January. Proceeds benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Dallas. 214/631-7354; thetrainsatnorthpark.com

DALLAS ZOO LIGHTS

The only thing better than zoo animals, or Christmastime fun, is a blend of the two. And the Dallas Zoo does this glowingly with its annual exhibit of silk lanterns—gorgeous, lifelike lights in the shape of all sorts of animals.

Of all the local ballet companies performing this traditional holiday show, it’s hard to beat Texas Ballet Theater. DFW’s premier professional ballet company stages its annual production at two locations: Winspear Opera House in Dallas and its home stage at Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth. Before select matinees, you may have the opportunity to come early and meet a real ballerina in costume. 877/828-9200; texasballettheater.org

➽ DECEMBER

DALLAS HOLIDAY PARADE

With its enormous balloons of holiday characters, dare we say that this annual parade rivals Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade? Maybe not, but it’s a nearly 40-year tradition that’s quite a sight among the big city high-rises. Come early to find a spot along the sidewalks for FREE, or reserve elevated bleacher

Sometimes called “Dallas’ living room,” the expansive Klyde Warren Park overlooking downtown is simultaneously a cozy and impressive spot for celebrating a Christmas tree lighting. Even after the mayor flips the switch, Santa photos and stories with Mrs. Claus, the winter party continues later into the night right across the street at Sammons Park with Reliant Lights Your Holidays. NOON YEAR’S EVE

NYE parties aren’t only for adults. Kids can get in on the action too at several venues around DFW. SciTech Discovery Center, Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, and Dallas Arboretum are among local venues that throw their own kid-friendly parties at midday, with themed crafts and electric ball or balloon drops. mindstretchingfun.org; fwmuseum. org; dallasarboretum.org
