Making back to school easier for parents

YOU CAN GO THE PUBLIC, PRIVATE OR CHARTER ROUTE. They can learn in style of Maria Montessori, from a religious approach, or from teachers who switch languages mid-day—or mid-class. There’s even a whole school based on Russian mathematics. When it comes to your child’s education, the options are aplenty—and that’s a good thing.

But with choices comes decisions, and the school you send your child to is one of the bigger ones you make as a parent. School shapes so much of who we are—our friends, our outlook, our childhood memories—not to mention our education. And all children learn differently; some kids might thrive at the neighborhood public school, while others might fit in better in a private or charter school setting. It’s no wonder this decision can feel so high stakes.

DFWChild’s Guide to Education is meant to help you navigate these choices, and the first step is knowing all your options. Consider this your cheat sheet.

If you’re considering a private school, flip to page 23 where you’ll find an exhaustive list of the offerings in Dallas-Fort Worth along with some key information such as the grades they serve and their total enrollment. Public school a better fit for your family? There are options there too—find your local ISD on page 39, and check out the directory of area public charter schools on page 41.

Don’t worry, Mom and Dad, you’ll ace this.

Why Your B Student Will Be OK

Breathe easy, parents of B students. Your child doesn’t have to be top of the class to be successful in life.

NANCY GRAHAM OF DALLAS says that some people were “shocked” when she mentioned she wasn’t going to actively push her son Babe, 9, into one of Dallas Independent School District’s magnet programs. He’s a good student and turns his homework in on time, but he isn’t that interested in school. Rather, he has a wide variety of interests outside of class, like Minecraft and tae kwon do. Most of all, he loves spending time with his friends.

When Babe was in first grade, Graham recalls being a little bit nervous about his reading assessment when she sat down for a parent-teacher conference. But Babe’s teacher immediately put her at ease. Babe was hanging in there and completing his assignments. And as the teacher explained, “You’ve got the ones who shoot up and the ones who creep up, but by the time they get to third grade, it all evens out.”

So Graham helps Babe with his homework. She throws a football with him on the weekends. “If we start something, we finish it,” she says. “The game, the season, we’ll follow through with it.” But she doesn’t pressure her son to win lots of awards and trophies. Yes, she cheers for him when he catches a football, but she is careful not to attach too much value to a single achievement.

dfwchild.com / 2023 9
ILLUSTRATION

“Look, there’s something to be said about striving to make sure my child is happy, rather than be the fastest or the smartest kid out there,” says Graham. “I want him to learn how to navigate the world and get through social events in time—in his time. And there’s not just one way to get there.”

This is a sentiment strongly echoed by Aileen Wainwright, a licensed clinical social worker based in Keller. Kids who don’t excel in school have so much to offer the world as they come into adulthood. “Average kiddos can be great leaders, and they have much better social skills. They’re good listeners and they tend to have a very high emotional intelligence.”

Since psychologist Daniel Goleman published Emotional Intelligence in the mid-’90s, study after study has confirmed that emotional intelligence is a better predictor of success than IQ or test scores—meaning kids who are good at, say, finding friends on the playground could end up with leadership roles and higher salaries than their book-smart but socially unsavvy peers.

The professional and political worlds are rife with leaders who were not top of their class but rocketed to success once free to pursue their interests. Some worked hard, but were gifted in areas like creativity and entrepreneurship rather than academia. Others found school boring and not worth their effort, but discovered other passions they could pour their energy into.

Think Richard Branson, who dropped out of high school, where he performed poorly, to follow his entrepreneurial bent and now has a net worth of over $5 billion. Or President Joe Biden, whose college grades were “never exceptional” according to The New York Times, but who made it into law school by sheer force of personality and later found his passion in politics.

And there’s former President George W. Bush, who famously told graduating Yale students: “To the C students, I say, you too can be president.” He would know.

So not nabbing that valedictorian spot doesn’t mean your child is destined for a life of mediocrity— and in the nearer future, it doesn’t mean your child won’t earn a place at his or her dream college. In fact, nonacademic traits like “concern for others and the common good” are highly desirable in prospective students for many college admissions offices. Concern for others can be a very difficult quality to assess, but in a 2016 report by Harvard’s Making Caring Common project, the authors suggest it can be demonstrated in the less splashy, sometimes overlooked day-to-day activities like “contributions to one’s family and the community” activities that some kids may naturally be drawn to instead of schoolwork.

REDEFINING SUCCESS

When parents push too hard for their children to excel, there can be unintended physical and emotional consequences. Children are particularly susceptible to sports injuries. And with athletics or

academics (and especially with both in the equation), there’s also an emotional risk of burning out, which can carry into adolescence and young adulthood and contribute to depression and anxiety.

In her Fort Worth counseling practice, Stephanie Adams, a licensed professional counselor, sees a lot of teenagers and college students with anxiety disorders. Many of her clients “don’t know how to slow down or take care of themselves,” and because many of them are so used to having structured activity, “they get overwhelmed when their parents aren’t there to manage their schedules or plan their activities or even take care of the day-to-day things like laundry and picking up after themselves.”

Given the risks, why are we putting so much pressure on our kids to excel—to “be the best, next better thing,” as Adams describes it? Why are we trying to box our kids in with such a narrow definition of success?

Instead, says Adams, parents should nurture and value “the assets that these kids already have—for example, that they are good to people, they are kind to people, they are good at finding solutions to difficult challenges.”

Some kids who don’t excel in the classroom will climb the ladder to the C-suite and the White House. Others will grow up to be good friends, good parents, good employees—allaround good people who successfully pursue their passions and make an impact in their communities.

“An angel on earth,” is how Jana Bailey, 59, of Richardson, describes her son Brandon, 25. “What he’s accomplished in such a short amount of time; he’s truly an amazing individual.”

Brandon never went through a gifted and talented program or took a bunch of honors classes. When it came to academics, “school was just not very high on my priority board,” says Brandon. “I thought as long I passed, I’m good.”

And yet, when Brandon was a teenager, the Bailey house was always full of kids. “It was  definitely the place to be!” laughs Bailey. “Brandon treats everyone as a friend, no matter what his or  her background.”

His ability to connect with different people, across so many different backgrounds, “to understand the lives people live,” has helped pave his way to adult success.

He graduated from Oklahoma State University and has a great career in account management ahead of him. He is a loving husband and devoted father of twin daughters. He and his wife are even foster parents, which are sorely needed here in Texas. Last year, he ran his first half-marathon.

So even though his parents didn’t push him to front-load his CV, Brandon found his own road to success. Now he’s passing those ideals on to his girls. He wants them “to find their niche” and hopes to inspire in them qualities like “kindness” and “thoughtfulness.”

And he’s thinking about taking on a full marathon next.

The importance of language immersion schools and why they work

FORT WORTH DAD MATTHEW SIKES wishes he were bilingual. “All the time,” he shares. “I’m a lawyer, and the more languages you speak, the greater the pool of potential clients. And it would help with witnesses. Plus, knowing other languages opens up cultural experiences you won’t have if you speak only English.”

Little by little, Sikes is learning some Spanish through his daughters. They’re 2 and 4—and take classes at the Spanish-immersion preschool Mi Casita in Fort Worth. “I find myself trying to figure out what they said,” Sikes laughs. “I look things up on Google Translate.”

Sikes enrolled his daughters at Mi Casita with the hope that they one day have the professional

and travel opportunities he hasn’t. He also sees great value for their developing minds. “They’re thinking in different ways and improving their cognition,” Sikes says of the girls. “They’ve really taken to it. I’ve even heard the older one lecturing the younger one in Spanish.”

Sikes and his wife are among a growing number of parents who want their children to be multilin-

gual. It makes sense, given our global society where diverse cultures thrive. According to the U.S. Census, nearly 30 percent of the Texas population (that is, 7.8 million people) speak Spanish at home.

There are private, specialty schools that help children become bilingual as well as a growing dual-language trend in North Texas public schools. Here’s how and why those programs work.

HOW IMMERSION SCHOOLS WORK

Mi Casita—the preschool and daycare in Fort Worth that Sikes’ daughters attend—conducts classes in 100% Spanish. “More than teaching in Spanish, we speak in Spanish,” explains Melissa Page Peter, founder and owner of Mi Casita, which accepts kids from birth to 5 years. “If we did both English and Spanish, the students wouldn’t have as much exposure to Spanish. The more sounds they hear in Spanish, the higher the likelihood of fluency.”

Mi Casita students take in the language through project-based learning—such as creating a toy store and presenting it (in Spanish) to their families. This is in contrast to simply being taught nouns, verbs and the like.

“Project-based learning is engaging, authentic work that leads to very positive learning experiences in general,” says Page Peter. “And my philosophy is that when we align language with that approach, they’ll have more positive experiences with Spanish as well.” Starting your kids young is best. While “better late than never,” Page Peter says “the optimal time is 0-7.”

Camille Laupie-Williams, a Dallas International School (DIS) pre-K3 French teacher, says kids in preschool grasp language quickly because they absorb it intuitively. In contrast, an adult might try to compare and translate what they’re learning to their first language.

“Our students will start to understand directions in French, to participate in our language rituals and to answer questions in Pre-K3,” Laupie-Williams notes. “They will be able to speak back in French in kindergarten.”

They gain skills in other languages too. DIS instructional days are split primarily between French

and English, with a third language, Spanish or Mandarin, incorporated beginning in pre-K4.

Even parents who speak another language themselves choose these kinds of schools and programs. Dallas mom Nelyda Villaseñor initially learned Spanish from her parents but gained fluency in dual-language programs. So it was an easy choice to enroll her 3-year-old daughter in bilingual pre-K at Dallas ISD’s Arthur Kramer Elementary.

“I have a few cousins whose parents enrolled them in onlyEnglish classes starting in kindergarten, and they can barely speak Spanish,” she shares.

“They are not able to write it nor really read it fluently. That makes a huge difference.”

Villaseñor tells us her daughter grows her language abilities mostly through playtime and basic skills building.

“I feel like her vocabulary has expanded,” she said. “She’s using fuller sentences now.”

CULTIVATING CULTURE

Another important aspect of language learning is immersion in the culture of study. For example, DIS follows the French education model. “We have more breaks during the day,” says Laupie-Williams. “We have three different recesses—that’s a little different from American schools, I think. Playing outside is important for us.”

And the children learn French stories and songs, too, such as classic book Roule Galette and children’s song Une Souris Verte. Plus, there’s one day out of the year that’s dedicated to celebrating all the countries around the world that speak French.

There’s also a multinational feel at Mi Casita, where most of the teachers were born outside of the United States. “We have teachers from Honduras, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Colombia,” says Page Peter. “Their cultural experience, they bring that to the classroom.”

Ultimately, these schools teach kids how to navigate modern life. “It’s that open mind that they get here at DIS,” Laupie-Williams says. “Being aware at such a young age of all the different cultures, all the different languages, is preparing them for the global world that they’re going to grow up in.”

your kid’s math scores?

WORDS TYLER HICKS

THE TEACHER WRITES A COMPLEX PROBLEM on the whiteboard and then asks her students, a group of seventh-graders, to take positions at the front of the class and try their hand at the problem. As her pupils walk to the whiteboard, she smiles, knowing exactly what is about to happen. Moments later, each of her students has surmised a solution—and each solution is slightly different.

“One of you is correct,” the teacher says. “Let’s figure out who it is.” Marina Popel’s school branch may be in Plano, but her teaching style is not American. This approach, called “access learning,” is a cornerstone of so-called Russian math, a style that more and more American parents are

dfwchild.com / 2023 17 ISTOCK

turning to in order to enhance their kids’ math skills.

Though American students have shown improvement on the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study, which is given to fourthand eighth-graders every four years, their scores still lag behind several other developed countries. And results of the math portion of the Program for International Student Assessment, a test given to 15-year-olds, are less encouraging, with Americans lingering in the middle of the pack.

A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO MATH

“Russian math” is really shorthand for a set of tactics employed by programs like the Russian School of Mathematics (RSM) in Plano, where Popel is the principal. While there is no one standard Russian math model, there are some features—like access learning— that make Russian math classrooms quite different from what American kids are accustomed to.

“It’s a completely different approach,” Popel says. “Russian math is about teaching students to work independently.”

Math education begins in pre-kindergarten and continues through 12th grade. There are no year-toyear benchmarks; students are on a continuous schedule that relies less on exams and more on classroom collaboration. At RSM, classes occur after school, and kids can launch their studies at any age pre-kindergarten or older. The Russian program has different levels in each grade, and the student can move from one level to another upon their achievement.

Russian math teachers employ online and in-class homework, though online is preferred. Online assignments allow students to give multiple attempts at a single

problem. Teachers are able to identify weak spots, and students receive more questions like the ones they missed.

In short: Russian math is not just about how to do math; it’s about why these operations are performed this way. “We push students to think, starting with small ideas and getting bigger,” Popel says.

That means introducing variables (like X and Y) and other bits of algebra earlier than in the typical math classroom too. Anastasia Morgan, a Grapevine mom, says her daughter uses variables in her classes at RSM. She’s in second grade; the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) doesn’t call for using variables until fourth grade.

The goal is to nurture students’ reasoning skills early on so they can easily adapt to new concepts. Russian math practitioners believe that it is understanding—not memorization— that leads to student success. The access learning technique, for example, fosters a dialogue between teacher and student that Popel believes leads to a higher level of understanding for everyone in the classroom.

PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS

But Russian math also poses some challenges. The work is demanding, and it requires a substantial financial and time investment for both students and parents.

RSM parents do report practical results. After just one year of Russian math, Morgan’s daughter improved an entire grade level. “She’s now doing math at the fifth-grade level—as a second-grader,” Morgan reports. Popel believes in the program because she sees the results first-hand.

“There is nothing better than seeing a child solve a problem he or she thought was too hard,” she says. “We all work together until we get to that moment.”
