Dear Friends,
![]()

Dear Friends,
We wish you a safe and happy summer!
We encourage you to take advantage of the summer and upcoming fall season by going to parks, walking with friends and engaging in exciting activities taking place across the city.
According to the National Institute on Aging, staying active, eating and sleeping well, meeting new people and being socially engaged are associated with improved health and well-being. We can assist you with finding new activities to explore and with making new social connections!
We invite you to visit one or many of our 20 senior centers located throughout the city. Join us as we celebrate the 250th Anniversary of America across the city and in our senior centers. Events include Soul of America concerts and art fairs, we also have our traditional programs offering fitness, billiards and games like Bid Whist or Mahjong. Please don't forget to pencil us in on your calendars for our fall vaccination clinics and for September 17th for Senior Fest! The only citywide fest exclusively for older adults!
For those of you unable to travel to the Senior Centers, take a look inside this latest edition of our virtual senior center brochure, Chicago Seniors Connected. You can participate in fitness classes like Zumba Gold and Forever Fit and join in city-wide virtual events like Loteria and the CPL Book Club featuring The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan and Good Dirt by Charmaine Wilkerson. We also include social services supports and resources like our congregated dining sites, food box opportunities and more! Please call DFSS Senior Services at (312) 7444016 or email aging@cityofchicago.org to learn more about resources for older adults.
We would also like to provide you with a few tips shared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help you stay safe and healthy during extreme heat weather events:
Stay hydrated. Drink water. Avoid alcoholic and caffeinated beverages such as soda, coffee, and tea, as they can leave you dehydrated quickly.
Stay indoors during extreme heat. In extreme heat and humidity, evaporation slows down and the body must work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature.
Stay in an air-conditioned place. If you do not have AC in your home, go somewhere that does. Senior centers also serve as city cooling centers. You may also visit a local library or friends and family to try to stay cool.
Know the early signs of heat-related illnesses such as dehydration, heat stroke, heat exhaustion, etc. Signs may include disorientation, excessive tiredness, headache, nausea, a flushed face, high body temperature, rapid pulse, dizziness, and confusion.
Maintain communication with friends and family. Prepare an emergency numbers list and place in an easyto-access area. Call your friends/peers to check on them.
Please call 311 if you need assistance with heat related matters and if you seek a senior well-being check for yourself and/or others. Please call 911 for emergencies.
For information on emergency preparedness and weather alerts, you may download the Chicago Emergency Operations Center App or visit the website Chicago.gov/OEMC
Enjoy the summer and upcoming fall season! We look forward to seeing you soon and often!
Sincerely,
Margaret LaRaviere Executive Director – Chicago Area Agency on Aging Deputy Commissioner – DFSS Senior Services Division

Join us in celebrating America’s 250 birthday with a lecture series by Open Yale Courses “The American Revolution” taught by Professor Joanne Freeman. “As John Adams put it, "The Revolution was in the Minds of the people... before a drop of blood was drawn at Lexington"--and it continued long past America's victory at Yorktown. This course will examine the Revolution from this broad perspective, tracing the participants' shifting sense of themselves as British subjects, colonial settlers, revolutionaries, and Americans.”

The City of Chicago has services available to help residents cope safely with extreme weather conditions. Those resources will be even more impactful with your support. Make a special effort to check on your friends and neighbors during a heat wave, especially if they are older adults, young children, live alone or are people with special needs.
•Locate a cooling center near you that is open.
•Request a well-being check for someone.
CALL 3-1-1 TO: HOT WEATHER TIPS:
•Drink lots of water, avoid alcoholic beverages, coffee, and sodas.
•Avoid going outside in extreme heat.
• If you don’t have air conditioning, keep shades drawn and blinds closed, with windows slightly open.
•If you must be outside, seek shade.
•Keep electric lights off or turned off.
•Minimize your use of your stove or oven.
•Wear loose, light, cotton clothing.
•Take cool baths and showers.
•Don’t leave anyone (including pets) in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
•Never leave children, older adults, or those who require special care during periods of intense summer heat.
•Older adults and others who may be sensitive to extreme heat should contact friends, neighbors, or relatives periodically throughout the day.
•Seek help if you feel symptoms of heat related illnesses.
Check on relatives, neighbors and friends. If you are unable to make contact, call 3-1-1 and request a well-being check.
DFSS Community Service Centers and Senior Centers offer relief during periods of extreme heat.

Auburn Gresham Center
For shelter placement, call 3-1-1.

The Rental Assistance Program (RAP) provides funding to Chicagoans who are at risk of becoming homeless. RAP helps residents who currently have housing but may soon lose it due to a temporary loss or reduction in income that has made it difficult to pay rent. This program is intended to provide short-term support while promoting long-term housing stability.
• Payment of rent to maintain housing stability and prevent displacement
• Security deposits in cases of fire, flood, foreclosure, housing relocation, domestic violence, or a court order to vacate
