A Note from the Executive Director Dear Friends, We are pleased to share this new edition of Chicago Seniors Connected as we welcome warmer months leading into Spring and Summer. Increased sunlight, longer days, warmer temperatures and sunnier perspectives are all the benchmarks of a change in season. As we lean into this new season, we invite you to learn something new by participating in either our virtual or in-person programming. Virtual programming includes classes like Tai Chi for Prevention & Balance and Forever Fit as well as social activities like the crafting hour, trivia party, loteria or bingo. Please see our senior center in-person activities located in the center of our brochure. Scan the QR Codes to see monthly full calendars! Do you find yourself in a spring-cleaning frame of mind but not sure where to start? Please check inside the brochure for our What's in your Closet and Buried in Treasures Program series aimed at helping you to declutter and repurpose items by donating them to family and friends. Looking for inspiration to be more creative, visit the Aging Boldy Exhibit at the Renaissance Court Gallery featuring senior artists stepping confidently into their gifts and talents. Searching for job and volunteer opportunities, see flyers inside the brochure for opportunities to work and share your skillsets. Searching for strategies to help you along your journey to be your best self? The theme of this year's Older Americans Month is Champion Your Health, focusing on prevention, wellness, and personal responsibility as cornerstones of healthy aging. As we celebrate this theme during the month of May, take an active role in managing your health, accessing preventive care, and making informed decisions about your wellbeing. We invite you to Champion Your Health by exploring the many special events occurring throughout the city like our senior specific health fairs titled Grown Folks Business at our six regional senior centers focused on vaccinations and discussions on wellness, substance use and sexual health. We also know that increasing food costs can present barriers to accessing healthy foods and championing your health which in turn poses a serious threat to the prevention and management of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease and the ability to age independently within homes and communities. Please review our brochure for ongoing opportunities for meal support at our 48 Golden Diner locations and Nourish Chicago Food pantries as well as upcoming events like our Food Box program. As always we include information on how to access nearby food pantries through the Greater Chicago Food Depository! We also remind you to save the date for special outings and events like our annual trip to the Chicago Botanic Garden and to enjoy Chicago's ultimate outdoor festival for Seniors Only, Senior Fest 2026! We encourage you to reach out to us for services and resources as we seek to support you with living your best life. As always, we look forward to seeing you soon and often! Sincerely, Margaret LaRaviere Executive Director – Chicago Area Agency on Aging Deputy Commissioner – DFSS Senior Services Division

SNAP Rules are Changing What you need to know

On July 4, 2025, President Donald Trump signed a new law that makes significant changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Illinois and all other states are now required to implement the changes. The changes could affect your SNAP eligibility or require you to take extra steps to receive SNAP benefits. Please read the following details carefully.

CHANGES TO WORK REQUIREMENTS

How is this different from the old rules? Under the old rules, the maximum age for work requirements was 54 and any dependent child under the age of 18 living in the same household meant work requirements didn’t apply to parents and other household members.

The new law passed in Washington, D.C., requires people between the ages of 18 and 64 to work or volunteer a minimum of 80 hours per month or participate in certain training or education to receive SNAP benefits. Most SNAP recipients need to meet the work requirements, except for those listed below.

In the past, work requirements did not apply to veterans, young adults who grew up in foster care, and people experiencing homelessness. These groups now must meet work requirements unless they are also in one of the categories listed on the left side of this page.

Who does not need to meet work requirements? Generally, the following people do not need to meet work requirements: • People younger than 18 or older than 64 • A parent or other member of a household that includes a child under age 14 • People who are medically certified as physically or mentally unable to work • People who are pregnant • Some Native Americans • A parent or other member of a household with responsibility for the care of an incapacitated person • A regular participant in a drug addiction or alcoholic treatment and rehabilitation program

What kinds of activities count towards the work requirements? To meet the work requirements a person must: • Work (paid or unpaid) an average of 20 hours per week; or • Volunteer to take part and comply with a SNAP Employment and Training activity such as basic education, vocational training, work experience, community workfare, Earnfare; or • Do self-initiated community service with a community-based organization for an average of 20 hours per week; or • Any combination of the above.

CHANGES TO WORK REQUIREMENTS (CONT.)

WHEN DO THESE CHANGES TAKE EFFECT?

What happens if I am required to work but do not meet the requirements? Unless you are someone who does not need to meet the work requirements, you will only be able to receive SNAP benefits for a total of three months when you are not working or participating in another activity that meets the work requirements.

The new law is effective immediately. The State of Illinois is waiting for guidance about when it will be required to apply the new eligibility requirements to SNAP beneficiaries in Illinois. For now, SNAP customers should continue managing their cases as normal.

KEEP YOUR BENEFIT INFORMATION UP TO DATE

Make sure you get the right amount of benefits each month. You want to avoid not getting enough, or getting too much that must be paid back. This is why it’s important to know what household changes must be reported and when they need to be reported. You received a letter with this information when your SNAP benefits were approved. Hold onto that letter. If you are unsure whether you need to report a change in your household, contact one of the Family Community Resource Centers (FCRC) or call 1-800-843-6154. You need to report all your current information correctly when you apply and when you complete your redetermination.

After three months of not working, you will no longer be eligible to receive SNAP benefits. You will then be blocked from receiving SNAP benefits for three years. You can become eligible to receive benefits again if you prove that you worked the required hours or took part in a training activity for 30 days. Do the same work requirements also impact Medicaid? Not right now. New work requirements for Medicaid do not take effect until 2027 at the earliest.

CHANGES TO IMMIGRANT ELIGIBILITY The new law also removes SNAP eligibility for many immigrants who are legally present in the United States. Undocumented non-citizens were never eligible for SNAP. Additionally, Naturalized U.S. Citizens can qualify for the same benefits as U.S.-born U.S. Citizens, including SNAP.

WHAT IF I NEED MORE INFORMATION? Information is changing quickly. We suggest you visit wegotyouillinois.org/updates for the latest or scan the QR code below.

Which non-citizens are now excluded from SNAP under the new law? Immigrants granted official humanitarian protections, including: Refugees, Asylees, certain victims of human trafficking, and certain victims of violence and torture. Which non-citizens can still qualify for SNAP? • Lawful Permanent Residents (green card holders) who have been in the U.S for at least 5 years • Certain Cuban and Haitian Entrants • Individuals lawfully residing in the United States in accordance with a Compact of Free Association (COFA)

The website is managed by the Illinois Commission to End Hunger. You can also call the Illinois ABE hotline for support at 800-843-6154. To find free food programs near you, visit wegotyouillinois.org/find-food.

More information on non-citizen eligibility will be provided when it becomes available. 23
