This singular quote is immeasurably valuable, for it touches upon two plights of the Black female experience that are infrequently discussed.

First, Megan’s statement is a nod to the reality that the extant #BlackLivesMatter movement largely advocates for Black men, and to the near exclusion of Black women.

There is no dispute that Black men are disproportionately targeted by state-sanctioned violence. In contrast, there is a pronounced lack of mobilization around the fact that Black women are likewise over-victimized by statesanctioned violence. Even more, the risk of Black

women suffering at the hands of such violence is compounded beyond the risk that Black men face. Black women and men are both direct targets of police brutality. Yet, rarely discussed is that Black women are also often subject to police brutality because of their relationship to Black male criminal suspects. For example, many Black women are brutalized during raids pursuant to police investigation of their Black male partners, or during physical confrontations between their partners and police officers.

This is that although Black women labor at the forefront of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, they remain consistently violated by the very men whom the movement so emphatically supports.

The ways in which Black men defile Black women are varied. Take for example, Oluwatoyin Salau, who was kidnapped, sexually assaulted, and murdered by a Black man while attending a #BlackLivesMatter protest. If that does not suffice, also take Megan herself and her shooting at the hands of Tory Lanez as another example.

“There’s Not Much Room For Passionate Advocacy If You Are A Black Woman” At first blush, it is tempting to dismiss this statement by Megan as untrue. In stark contrast to what is quoted, society would seem to all-too-eagerly depend upon Black women’s passionate advocacy. Within the realm of racial equality, it was four Black women who founded the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Separately, Black men and the media have memorialized Black women as the gears of the movement through their artwork and magazine covers, which have unceasingly featured the scornful, wearied image of protesting Black women and girls.

Moving to gender equality, white Hollywood unashamedly rode the coattails of, and later co-opted, the #MeToo movement. Prior to being overtaken by an abundance of famous white women, Black female activist Tarana Burke founded the movement, primarily to spotlight Black female survivors of sexual violence. As for sexual equality, there has long been discussion surrounding whether the LGBTQ+ community has drawn aspects of their culture and representative style from the creative expression and shared image of Black women.

Nevertheless, and returning to Megan’s statement, it becomes correct when its surrounding context is considered. The surrounding text of the article makes it clear: Black women are pressured into silence only when they endeavor to advocate on their own behalf. The Black, female, and LGBTQ+ communities enjoy Black women’s radicalization, subject to certain limitations.

For Black men, non-Black women, and nonBlack, non-female members of the LGBTQ+ community, the limit is often where Black women’s interests diverge from their own.

Ongoing controversy aside, weight remains one of the top indicators of an unhealthy diet. Similarly, individuals often only adopt a healthy diet when they want to lose weight. It would seem to follow that if I had ever improved my diet following my early life, then it was because I wanted to lose excess weight. However, this was not the case. First, while I did indeed become slimmer after beginning to eat healthier, I had never in my life been considered overweight to begin with. This was likely due to my genetics and the fact that I constantly participated in athletics.

BLACKPINK As A Model Of The Value Of Beauty, Character And Eclecticism

It has been well over a year since I first earned my designation as “a Blink.” The term Blink refers to an individual who is a fan of the renowned South Korean pop group, BLACKPINK. In relation to the many fandoms for American musical artists, the term “Blinks” is analogous to those such as “the Navy,” and “the Beyhive,” which reference the fans of Rihanna and Beyoncé, respectively.

BLACKPINK is a girl group comprised of four female members, known mononymously as Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa. Formed under a South Korean musical production giant, YG Entertainment, the group debuted their first album in August 2016. They immediately catapulted to the top of the music charts, which is where they remain to this day.

Their acclaim having spread across multiple continents, including North America, Europe, and Asia, the girl group has set and broken records. For example, BLACKPINK is the first music group to have three music videos on YouTube with at least one billion views.

Also, two of the group’s music videos set the record for the most-viewed music video within 24 hours of its release.

As for Blinks, they credit BLACKPINK’s visuals, character, and eclecticism as the sources of their adoration. The following is more on fans’ meaning by these adjectives and how Black American women might draw from these aspects in trying to enhance their own social image.

To see the BLACKPINK members is to immediately understand the height of their personal beauty standards. They unwaveringly deliver an aesthetic that is immaculate, engaging, and as coveted as it is unattainable. This stands regardless of whether they are seen in a candid paparazzi photo or in an authorized release from YG Entertainment, or whether they are appearing in-person, via screen, or on print.

The perceived beauty of each individual member of BLACKPINK would seem to be critical to the group’s shared success. With apparent ease, each of the four members is able to contribute in this way to their acclaim. They all share in their lustrous hair, pure skin, shimmering eyes, and svelte frames. Their fans, however, would assign to each of them their hallmark feature. As Blinks would say, Jisoo’s bone structure is unique to only her; Jennie has a remarkable sense of fashion; Rosé’s hair lives a life of its own; and Lisa moves with an unrivaled agility.

BLACKPINK Is A Perfectionist As It Pertains To Their Group And Members’ Image

There is splendor in every aspect of BLACKPINK’s outward appearance, which is something that Black women might consider emulating.

As Black women often fall the furthest short of traditional beauty standards, we are all too willing to subscribe to the notion that “looks don’t matter.” Casting all debates regarding fairness aside, this suggestion is overwhelmingly untrue. There is a dearth of evidence of its truth, but more important to be discussed is one of the reasons why Black women are in such fervent denial.

Having lived our entire lives as Black-girls-turned-women, we cannot avoid knowing that we fail under the prevailing beauty standards. The knowledge invites pain, which we try to dull by clinging to untruths regarding the importance of beauty. Yet, we must still know that this is no permanent solution because despite reciting “looks don’t matter,” here we are, contradicting ourselves by also popularly chanting things such as “Black is beautiful.”

Beyond BLACKPINK’s dazzling beauty, Blinks would seem to worship each of the four members for her irreproachable character.

Prior to their 2016 debut, they trained for an average of five years, such training so rigorous as to require them to complete 14-hour-per-day vocal, dancing, and stage lessons for every day of their trainee period, save the occasional fortnight they were allowed off. Blinks pride the group for the endurance that surmounting this arduous trainee period undoubtably requires.

Beyond their shared endurance, each member is celebrated for her unique, superhuman character trait. Jisoo is the eldest member of BLACKPINK, and as such she is often praised for her stoicism and refined air. While Jisoo is the eldest member, Jennie is the member who trained longest before the group’s debut. It is popularly recalled that Jennie assumed the role as leader amongst the many trainees, a role which she retains within the sincedebuted group.

As for Rosé, many Blinks suspect that YG Entertainment denies her the same opportunities given to her co-members, simply because she trained for the shortest period of time.

Thus, many are keen to the tenacity, determination, and perseverance that Rosé demonstrates in her work-ethic, as she tries to reaffirm her worthiness as a group member. Last, Lisa seems to shoulder the responsibility of gauging and maintaining the group’s joint morale. When the members are particularly fatigued or down-trodden, she knows how to guarantee a smile out her cohorts.

Equally as important as their individual displays of character is the dedication that each of the four shows to the group’s shared success. Refreshingly unlike the musical artists in America, none of the members has ever suffered scandal or has in any other way risked tarnishing the BLACKPINK brand. The four regularly sacrifice for the benefit of the group, and they do so as quietly as if their acts of selflessness were already a foregone conclusion.

There are two things that Black women might model after BLACKPINK in the above regard. First, in a society that increasingly celebrates the “rebel” or “well-intending troublemaker,” we as Black women might also remember that sometimes it is good to conform.

Lessons from lockdown This year has been a year like no other and I don’t think it’ll be like anything we have to face in the future. Being in a lockdown for the majority of the year has been frustrating, boring, sad and even had moments of some fun. One thing I know is that this lockdown has taught me plenty of life lessons that I thought I’d share.

We’ve had to be more intentional about our relationships with others. About making them and maintaining them. This year has made a lot of people realise that they are friends with people and hang around them all the time only because of circumstances.

For me graduating in the midst of this pandemic, it meant I didn’t get to say a real goodbye to all those people I met at University. Those people that I was friends with enough to invite over if I bumped into them, but not close enough to randomly message them to hang out. At first, I was upset because I’ll likely never see these people again, but then I realised that the most important people in my life would still be there and a lockdown or a pandemic wasn’t going to change that.

You may not just have graduated university, but I’m sure you’ve experienced this kind of situation before. Being in a transitioning period in your life and seeing how all of your relationships with others shift in different ways.

She was highly praised for this bold choice especially since pink is not a color associated with being ‘work appropriate’ or ‘serious’ enough for this type of occasion.

That you don’t have to be a man or act masculine to get to places of power and success. We no longer have to play by their rules to succeed in life and I think that’s a great step in the right direction. Wearing a dress or a certain color doesn’t make us less capable and it’s amazing to see famous women using their platforms to break those stereotypes.
