Greetings from the Feddes and De Boer families, We hope each of you are having a great 2012. A year ago, we had thought we had seen the peak of the cattle market, but it looks like we may have been wrong. We are seeing record prices for cull bulls, cows and feeder cattle. Bred and replacement females are selling higher than anyone ever thought. I think that market is finally reflecting the smallest cowherd in the nation for several decades. The Red Angus breed has always excelled in maternal traits. Red Angus females have been at the top of the market and have been hard to find. Feddes and C-T females are second-to-none in the breed as well as in the industry. Easy fleshing, fertile, problem-free cows are a must for us. We select for great females and cull ruthlessly so the bulls in the sale should sire very functional daughters, with sound feet and legs, excellent fertility, and tight-made udders. That adds up to less labor, more longevity, and more profit for producers. More feedlots are looking for Red Angus and Red Angus influenced cattle because they have good feed conversion, grow rapidly, and produce high quality carcasses. At Feddes and C-T we stress balance of all traits. We don’t chase fads or extremes in any traits. We believe extremes in any traits will create major problems in other traits. We feed high roughage ration to produce longevity in our bulls. The performance in this set of bulls is great. Without a doubt this is the most consistent set of bulls we have offered for sale from top to bottom. WE have a good number of calving ease bulls that still offer solid performance. There are also quite a number of top performance bulls that will add pounds to a calf crop. Over the past few years, we have moderated our mature cow size but have added depth of body, thickness and length. It is nearly impossible to find the calving ease, growth, maternal traits and top end carcass traits that Lot 1 has. He started out at 68#, then exploded out to a 105 WR, 113 YR, 131 IMF ratio, 104 REA ratio, (13.5 scan). His EPDs are equally impressive. CED 2%, BW 8%, WW 31%, YW 11%, MILK 34% (just about where we want it), CEM 20%, STAY 17%, MA 9%, REA 6%, and back fat scan of .23. He is out of a first calf (MIMI) daughter with a near perfect udder. His granddam has been flushed, as well as three generations behind her. This bull is wide based on a moderate frame, and packs a lot of meat and muscle, especially considering his calving ease. This is our first set of Conquest calves, but we certainly like what we see so far. We plan to collect and use this bull in 2012.

I’m not sure where to start with C-T King Kong 1121, because I have yet to find too many things that he does wrong. He is a moderate framed (5 ½) bull with lots of muscle and a wide stance. He has a phenotype that would be hard to change and a nearly perfect feet and leg set. His EPDs are very solid with 6 traits in the top 20% of the breed. Take note of these ratios with a 70 lb. WW 95 ratio, 808 WW 113 ratio, 109 YR ratio, 114 IMF ratio, 110 REA ratio. I would say that you don’t find a bull with this solid of stats every day. Dam C-T Lass 0929 is a 2 yr. Norseman daughter from the very maternal Lass cow family, she has a great udder with very sound feet and legs. These Conquest sons have been coming to the top and King Kong 1121 Maybe one of the best I’ve seen. Dam’s Mppa 105.2

We talk a lot about balance in our programs. Lot 3 is a great example of the balance we strive for. He started out at a 78# BW, 99 BR, and exploded to a 110 WR, 115 YR, 117 IMFR, 106 REAR, and .17 backfat. His EPDs speak for themselves. He has negative BW, WW top 21%, YW 7%, ME 9%, HPG 1%, MA 26%, CW 26%, REA 10%. His dam is a near perfect uddered Feddes Big Sky daughter that is moderate size female. His granddam is a beautiful Norseman King daughter. This bull is packing a lot of lean meat. If you are looking for a Packer with a little more maternal, don’t miss giving him a second look . This Justice son has carved himself a wide path, and stems from the very productive Angie Rose cow family. I would dare to say that there are not very many Red Angus bulls that posted a 902 WW with a 126 Ratio. And a 1326 YW/124, and then scans a 15.2 REA with a 114 ratio. So this bull has not only played the part but also looks the part, with extra length, around a 6 frame, great attitude and very correct feet and leg structure. You will also notice that 1100 is in the top 1% EPDs for WW, YW, TM, CW, and still in the top 12% for CEM. Dam is a powerful Packer daughter with a nice udder and phenotype. Dams Mppa 110.4

Bull

Many people have asked who our best bull is, that all depends what you are looking for. I think this bull can run with just about any bull to sell in 2012. He has a negative BW, and big growth, WW, YW, ME,HPG and REA are all in the top 9%, and ST 24%, and MA 34%. He posted 108 WR, 105 YR, REA scan 14.7, (109 ratio), IMF ratio 112 and a .14 backfat scan. His dam is a beautifully made Grand Cherokee daughter with a tightly attached udder, and small well placed teats. The females behind her in the pedigree are at the top of our herd, with most having been in the donor pen. Lot 5 is strong, straight topped bull with depth and a big, deep quarter. We have collected this bull and plan to use him in 2012. Dam’s MPPA 101.3.

This bull (to quote Chuck Feddes) is a bull that is hard to find any holes in! He is moderated framed bull (5 ½) with good thickness and depth, he also has great feet and leg set. Starting at 79 lbs. and rolling on to a 786/110 WW and an 1148/108 YW he has great performance. He also posted a 116 IMF ratio and 101 REA ratio. Looking at the EPDs he is in the top 15% in 7 categories now that’s hard to beat. Sire Hobo Design is quickly making a name for himself and has made a couple of strong sets of bulls at Loosli and 5L. Dam (Tina 0950) is a very maternal, nice uddered outcross bred cow, coming from Make Mimi and Right Time, and stemming from our herd building Tina 113. Dams Mppa 104.

Thick and Wide, Thick and Wide!! I’m not sure how else you would describe this Conquest son. This bull is a herd bull prospect with moderate 5 - 5 ½ frame and one of the widest backs and stances in the pen. He is an ET calf out of a tank of a Norseman daughter, going back to Right Time and our herd building Tina 113 cow. He has a solid set of EPDs with his CED in the top 5% of the breed. He also scanned a 14.38 REA which would have put him in the top of the bulls. Don’t miss this bull if you are looking for an outcross pedigree with extreme muscle and thickness. -7-

I am sounding like a broken record about balance, but it is critical to meet the needs of the cow/calf producer, but also the feeder and packer and consumer as well. We could easily have started the sale with this STUD. He started with a moderate BW, then exploded to a 110 WR, 114 YR, 104.2 GR, and REA ratio 107. He is big time birth to yearling spread. He has 7 EPDs in the top of the charts. WW 4%, YW 2 %, TM 6%, HPG 10%, MA 20%, REA 1% and add in ME at 19%. Try find a bull that will match that. His dam is a moderate frame Big Sky granddaughter with lots of volume and a beautiful udder. Her granddam is in our ET program. 316 is a long bodied, easy fleshing, perfect uddered cow with lots of volume, just like her daughter and granddaughter. Big Sky sold in our 2006 sale to Genex and several Red Angus breeders. Genex advertises him as “bet the ranch calving ease”. He has certainly proven his calving ease, marbling and quality. His daughters are quickly becoming top producing cows. We get great reports on his daughters, even from breeders with other breeds of cattle. His daughters are moderate frame, easy fleshing, and deep bodied with tight made udders and small teats. Many of our top bulls are out of Big Sky daughters. The Red Angus breed is based on productive, problemfree females with calving ease and carcass quality. Big Sky does these things as well as any bull we know of.

…The Ranchers Guide to EPDs Completely Described Beef Production:

Reproduction • Growth Carcass • Maintenance Profit starts at Reproduction! Research has shown that reproduction has four to ten times the economic impact of carcass traits. Yet, Red Angus is the only breed that completely describes cow herd reproduction from birth through profitable lifespan. Red Angus reproductive EPDs are expressed as percent probability, meaning the higher the EPD, the more likely the desired observation. Profitable reproduction can be boiled down to success in these four Economically Relevant Traits: Calving Ease Direct (CED): The expected progeny difference of calves being born unassisted from two year-old heifers. The Red Angus CED model accounts for contemporary group birth weight differences and calving ease scores. Heifer Pregnancy (HPG): The expected progeny difference of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age. Calving Ease Total Maternal (CETM): The expected progeny difference of a given animal's daughters calving unassisted at two years of age. Stayability (STAY): The expected progeny difference of a bull's daughters remaining in the herd until at least six years of age. Females that don't stay in the herd that long are losing money, and they also contribute to a higher rate of replacement females that the rancher can’t cash crop.

The use of EPDs has converted selecting range bulls from an art form to a science, better preparing cow/calf producers to make genetic decisions which may ultimately improve their profitability. 1. The terms of the sale are cash unless prior arrangements have been made. 2. Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder. The auctioneer will settle any disputes as to bids, and his decision on such matters shall be final. 3. Any announcement from the block on sale day will take precedence over printed material. 4. Health certificates will be furnished for shipment anywhere in the United States. 5. Each animal becomes buyerâ€™s risk as soon as sold. Cattle will be cared for, for a reasonable length of time, at the ranch, at the buyers risk. 6. Retained Interest: All bulls will sell Â˝ interest and full possession. The buyer receives full possession and full salvage value. The seller has the right to collect semen at the buyers convenience, and the sellers cost. If the buyer wishes to share in the collection costs and revenues, that is his/her choice. 7. Registered heifers selling for more than $1,000 will sell with papers, less than $1,000 will be sold as commercial. 8. In case an adjustment is required on an animal, it will be made with a replacement animal of equal value to the animal in question or credit on the purchase of another animal. 9. Everyone attending this sale does so at their own risk. Owners, clerks or other helpers do not assume responsibility, legal or otherwise, for damages of any kind. 10. Free delivery to central points in Montana. $75 will be deducted from each bull that the buyer takes home from the sale. We will help with arrangements on females we will help make arrangements. A certificate of registry and transfer will be furnished for each animal sold as a registered animal after settlement has been made. 12.
