OS Clean!

All of the bulls in this sale are OS clean for at least 5 generations, RAAA requires 2 generations, but we went much further. There has been much talk about genetic defects and rightfully so. OS is a recessive gene, therefore must be carried by both parents. For the commercial buyer, it is very simple. If you buy clean bulls, no matter what the cowherd is, you CAN NOT have any OS calves. We have done extensive testing, to make sure we clean up our herds, and found very few carriers. No carriers will be sold in this sale. Any bull that goes back to a carrier in 5 generations has been tested. BUY WITH CONFIDENCE, we have done the work for you on this issue.

Greetings from the Feddes and De Boer families, We hope each of you are having a great 2011. A year ago we were talking about a downturn in the cattle market, but what a difference a year can make. We are seeing record prices for weigh-up cattle as well as feeder cattle. Bred females and replacement heifer calves are selling higher than anyone thought possible. I think the market is finally reflecting the smallest cowherd in the nation for several decades. The Red Angus breed has always excelled in maternal traits. Red Angus females (heifer calves and bred females) have been at the top of the market, but they are hard to find. Feddes and C-T females are second to none in the breed, as well as the industry. Easy fleshing, fertile, problem free cows are a must for us. We select for great females, and cull ruthlessly so the bulls we offer for sale should sire very functional daughters, with sound feet and legs, excellent fertility, and tight made udders. That adds up to less labor, more longevity, and more profit for producers. More feedlots are looking for Red Angus and Red Angus influence cattle because they have good feed conversions, grow rapidly and produce high quality carcasses. At Feddes and C-T we stress balance of all traits. We don’t chase fads or extremes in any trait. We believe extremes in any trait will create major problems in other traits. We feed a high roughage ration to promote longevity in our bulls. The performance in this set of bulls is very good. Without a doubt this is the most consistent set of bulls we have offered for sale, from top to bottom. We have a good number of calving ease bulls, that still offer solid performance. There are also quite a number of top performance bulls that will add pounds to a calf crop. Over the last few years we have moderated our mature size but added depth of body, thickness and length. We clipped and ultrasounded right at 100 bulls. Also in the offering are four ½ blood Red Angus X Simmental bulls. That data will all be in the catalog as well as on our websites. Terms and Conditions

1. The terms of the sale are cash unless prior arrangements have been made. 2. Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder. The auctioneer will settle any disputes as to bids, and his decision on such matters shall be final. 3. Any announcement from the block on sale day will take precedence over printed material. 4. Health certificates will be furnished for shipment anywhere in the United States. 5. Each animal becomes buyerâ€™s risk as soon as sold. Cattle will be cared for, for a reasonable length of time, at the ranch, at the buyers risk. 6. Retained Interest: All bulls will sell 1/2 interest and full possession. The buyer receives full possession and full salvage value. The seller has the right to collect semen at the buyers convenience, and the sellers cost. If the buyer wishes to share in the collection costs and revenues, that is his/her choice. 7. In case an adjustment is required on an animal, it will be made with a replacement animal of equal value to the animal in question or credit on the purchase of another animal. 8. Everyone attending this sale does so at their own risk. Owners, clerks or other helpers do not assume responsibility, legal or otherwise, for damages of any kind. 9. Free delivery to central points in Montana. $25 will be deducted from each bull that the buyer takes home from the sale. We will assist in making arrangements for all other deliveries. We will attempt to deliver bulls in early April. 10. A certificate of registry and transfer will be furnished for each animal sold as a registered animal after settlement has been made. 11. Big Sky sold in our 2006 sale to Genex and several Red Angus breeders. Genes advertises him as “bet the ranch calving ease”. He has certainly proven his calving ease, marbling and quality. His daughters are quickly becoming top producing cows. We get great reports on his daughters, even from breeders with other breeds of cattle. His daughters are moderate frame, easy fleshing, and deep bodied with tight made udders and small teats. Many of our top bulls are out of Big Sky daughters. The Red Angus breed is based on productive, problem-free females with calving ease and carcass quality. Big Sky does these things as well as any bull we know of.

Atlas sold in our 2007 sale to Lee Beerman in Hawaii. (We would like to go see him) Atlas has excellent feet and leg structure, and is siring cattle with great eye appeal. His sons have extra thick tops, and show a lot of depth and thickness. He is siring more depth and power than his sire. He sired the top selling female at the 2009 NILE. Daughters are making excellent young cows.

We have debated long and hard about selling this Lot 3 bull or keeping him for ourselves. Bulls with 79# BW, 759 WW (108 WR), 1295 YW (110 YR), 14.7 REA (115 ratio) are hard to find. He is a medium frame bull, with extra length and thickness, a good square hip, strong top line and stands on a wide base. His dam did a wonderful job on him as a first calver, as well she should. Her dam has been one of our top donor cows. The granddam (899) was the top seller at our 2005 female sale, and is still producing at 13 years old. She has 42 calves reported and has a 104.3 MPPA. 899’s dam (4231) is also the dam of Jake’s 880 cow that has been an outstanding producer, and C-T’s 810 cow that has been a foundation cow for their herd. 4231’s dam (502-5185) is the foundation cow of the Blockana cow family for the Feddes Red Angus herd. …The Ranchers Guide to EPDs Completely Described Beef Production:

Reproduction • Growth Carcass • Maintenance Profit starts at Reproduction! Research has shown that reproduction has four to ten times the economic impact of carcass traits. Yet, Red Angus is the only breed that completely describes cow herd reproduction from birth through profitable lifespan. Red Angus reproductive EPDs are expressed as percent probability, meaning the higher the EPD, the more likely the desired observation. Profitable reproduction can be boiled down to success in these four Economically Relevant Traits: Calving Ease Direct (CED): The expected progeny difference of calves being born unassisted from two year-old heifers. The Red Angus CED model accounts for contemporary group birth weight differences and calving ease scores. Heifer Pregnancy (HPG): The expected progeny difference of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age. Calving Ease Total Maternal (CETM): The expected progeny difference of a given animal's daughters calving unassisted at two years of age. Stayability (STAY): The expected progeny difference of a bull's daughters remaining in the herd until at least six years of age. Females that don't stay in the herd that long are losing money, and they also contribute to a higher rate of replacement females that the rancher can’t cash crop.

The use of EPDs has converted selecting range bulls from an art form to a science, better preparing cow/calf producers to make genetic decisions which may ultimately improve their profitability.
