In the quiet town of Lethbridge, Alberta, the Desjardins family faced a challenge that would test their strength, faith, and resilience. Brynleigh Desjardins, born on July 29, 2017, was diagnosed with a critical heart condition even before she took her first breath. This is the story of a family's unwavering love, a little girl's indomitable spirit, and the life-saving support of the David Foster Foundation
At 20 weeks pregnant, Melissa Desjardins received news that no expecting mother ever wants to hear. During a routine scan, doctors detected shadowing around her baby's heart. The Desjardins were sent to Calgary for a more detailed examination, where a pediatric cardiologist delivered the devastating diagnosis: Brynleigh had critical aortic stenosis, a condition that gave her little chance of survival. "As parents, we were shattered," Melissa recalls. "But we decided to fight for her, no matter what."
Brynleigh's condition evolved into hypoplastic left heart syndrome, qualifying her for a three-stage surgery post-birth. At 37 weeks pregnant, Melissa relocated to Edmonton to prepare for Brynleigh's arrival. At just five days old, Brynleigh underwent her first open-heart surgery, the Norwood procedure. Her resilience shone through as she successfully endured the next stage, the Glenn procedure, at seven months old.

A Season of Growth & Excitement
Message from the Chairman
Spring is a time of renewal, growth, and new beginnings—something I see reflected in the incredible work of my Foundation. Over the years, our Foundation has grown beyond what I ever imagined, and it is all because of the dedication and passion of our team. Their hard work continues to provide vital support to families with children in need of life-saving organ transplants, ensuring that no family must face this journey alone. I could not be more grateful for their heartfelt dedication.
As we continue to grow, I am thrilled to welcome our newest team member, Ashley Kiss, who joins us as the Executive Assistant to the CEO. Ashley brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the foundation, and we know she will play a vital role
in helping us further our mission. Her support will be instrumental in ensuring that our team can continue making a meaningful impact on the families we serve. Welcome to the team, Ashley!
This season also brings something exciting on a personal level—the opening of my new Broadway musical, Boop! on April 5th. This project has been an incredible journey, and I cannot wait to share it with the world. Just like the Foundation, Boop! is a labour of love, built on creativity, passion, and a belief in the power of storytelling.
Wishing you all a wonderful spring!
With heartfelt gratitude, David Foster, OC, OBC Founder and Chairman David Foster Foundation
As we step into this vibrant season, I want to thank everyone- our team, our donors, and the families we serve- for being part of this Foundation’s incredible journey. Together, we are making a difference, bringing hope, and changing lives.
Embracing the Renewal of Spring
Message from the Chief Executive Officer
As the last traces of winter fade and the world around us begins to bloom, we are reminded of the incredible renewal that spring brings. The longer days, the warmth of the sun, and the vibrant colours of new life all inspire a sense of anticipation, hope and possibility.
Spring is a season of transformation, much like the profound impact of organ donation. Just as the earth awakens and blossoms, transplant recipients are given a second chancean opportunity to embrace life anew. For families waiting for a match, spring mirrors the hope they hold in their hearts, knowing that generosity and kindness can bring them the renewal they so desperately need .
At the Foundation, we see this season as a time to celebrate the gift of life and the incredible generosity of organ donors and their families. Their selfless acts create a ripple effect—they allow hope to bloom, healing to start, and give a future to those in need.
As we step into this new season, let us carry the spirit of renewal forward. Whether it is by registering as an organ donor, financially supporting families on their journey, or simply spreading awareness, each of us has the power to bring new life to others.
…we see this season as a time to celebrate the gift of life and the incredible generosity of organ donors and their families.
With sincere appreciation,
HCol Michael Ravenhill Chief Executive Officer

family returned home. "It was a mix of relief and joy," Dan shares. "Seeing Brynleigh healthy and full of life was the best gift we could ever receive."
Today, Brynleigh is a vibrant six-yearold, attending school, playing soccer, and living the life of a normal child. Despite some challenges from the strokes she suffered, her progress is nothing short of miraculous. Regular check-ups and anti-rejection medications are now part of her routine, ensuring her heart remains healthy. "Brynleigh is doing fantastic," Melissa beams. "It's hard to believe it’s been nearly three years since her transplant."
The Desjardins family’s journey is a testament to the power of love, resilience, and community support. Melissa’s message to other families in similar situations is clear: "As hard as it is to accept help, the David Foster Foundation is there to help you focus on your sick child. They are an amazing organization with wonderful people." Their story also underscores the critical importance of organ donation. Brynleigh’s life was saved because a family made the courageous decision to donate their loved one's heart.
"Please consider registering as an organ donor," Dan urges. "It’s the most selfless gift you can give, and it can save lives just like Brynleigh's."

Organ Donation Awareness Month
Charli’s Story and
the True Impact of Organ Donation
April is National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Month (NOTDAM)
Every year, thousands of Canadians wait for a life-saving organ transplant, hoping for a second chance at life. For Charli and her family, July 2023 marked the day when that second chance became a reality. At just ten years old, Charli received a deceased donor liver transplant, a gift that transformed not only her future but also the lives of those who love her. Her parents, Yasmyne and Tim, reflect on the emotional rollercoaster of transplant and why organ donation is the greatest gift of all.
The Hardest Part of the Journey
"Watching your child deteriorate and knowing there is nothing you can do to stop it is devastating. As parents, we constantly wondered: ‘Did we do something wrong? Could we have prevented this?’ We felt lost, helpless, and like we had failed our child. But we had a strong team of medical professionals who reminded us to hold onto hope." For months, Charli fought through exhaustion, hospital stays, and uncertainty. And then, everything changed. "The moment we learned there was a donor match, it was like time stood still. This was it—the chance Charli desperately needed."
A Second Chance: How Life Changed After Transplant
Before her transplant, Charli spent much of her time too sick to enjoy the things she loved—drawing, playing piano, and spending time with her best friends.
After the transplant:
• The first thing she asked for when she could eat again?
—Ramen and pork buns.
• She gave her new liver a nickname: "Axie."
• She found joy in: video chatting with friends, making slime, and playing in the Samsung Space at SickKids.
• Most importantly, —she was no longer sick.
"The transplant didn’t just save her life—it gave our family the chance to dream again. It made us cherish every moment.
"The Truth About Organ Donation: What We Wish More People Knew
Charli’s parents want people to understand the reality of transplant beyond the surgery itself.
• It’s an emotional journey—
"The mental load is overwhelming. Every day leading up to transplant, we felt like we were carrying the weight of the world. The ‘what ifs’ were constant."
• It takes a village—
"Our medical team became our greatest allies. They were patient, understanding, and compassionate. They guided us through every moment of fear and uncertainty."
• One de cision change se ve rything—
"One family, in their hardest moment, said yes to organ donation. That ‘yes’ saved our child’s life. Their generosity will never be forgotten."
The Ripple Effect: Why Organ Donation Matters
• One donor can save up to 8 lives.
• Tissue donation can help up to 75 more people.
• In Canada, over 4,000 people are waiting for a transplant right now.
Charli’s parents have become strong advocates for organ donation because they now know firsthand what it means to be on the other side. "Before transplant, we never thought much about organ donation. Now, it’s impossible not to. Because of one selfless decision, our child has been given a future. We will carry this gratitude with us forever."
What You Can Do:
Be the Start of Someone’s Second Chance
April is Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Month— there’s no better time to register.
Step 1: Register as an organ donor today through your province or territory's registry.
Step 2: Talk to your family about your decision— your choice matters.
Step 3: Spread the message—share Charli’s story and help save more lives.
"One ‘yes’ can mean more birthdays, more memories, and more moments like this. Will you be the start of someone’s second chance?"
Volunteer Spotlight: Giving Back to the David Foster Foundation
By Donna Schubert
I’ve been a volunteer with the Foundation since it began — nearly 40 years ago. My husband, Marty Schubert, has been volunteering for the past 13 years. It’s been our privilege to support this incredible organization, which is dedicated to helping children and families in need of life-saving organ transplants. It’s a cause very close to both of our hearts, and our experiences over the years have been incredibly fulfilling.
Thank you to Mike Ravenhill for inviting us back year after year, and for trusting us to help bring his incredible visions to life. We’re truly grateful to be part of this amazing team.
Over the years, we’ve continued to be inspired by the profound impact the Foundation has on families during some of the most difficult times in their lives.
Our volunteer work has been diverse—from volunteer recruitment and coordination, managing accreditation for events, assisting with fundraising campaigns, coordinating logistics, and helping to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation and the Foundation’s vital mission. Through this work, we’ve met so many incredible people and formed lifelong friendships.
There have been countless memorable moments, but one of the most special for me was at the 2023 event. Watching David’s young son Rennie running, laughing, and playing with Khai MacLeod—one of the children supported by the Foundation—was unforgettable. Seeing those two little boys simply enjoying being kids, made possible by the support of DFF and its generous donors, supporters, and volunteers, truly moved me.
Volunteering with the Foundation has been a deeply rewarding experience for both Marty and me. The Foundation has been a significant part of my life for nearly four decades, and of our family’s life as well.
David’s remarkable commitment to this cause for all these years is truly inspiring. It’s been our honour to be part of this incredible journey.

went on to save six lives. In the days that followed, over 150,000 Canadians were inspired to register as organ donors — a phenomenon now known as the Logan Boulet Effect
For us at the Foundation, Green Shirt Day holds deep meaning. Every day, we witness the courage of families navigating the organ transplant journey and the hope that donation brings. This day is a chance for us to reflect, honour those who gave the gift of life, and stand
