Jayden’s Transplant Story PROFILE Name: Jayden Strattner-Brown Age: 8 years Home: Winnipeg, MB Transplant: Heart Date: May 29, 2009

O

n October 6, 2008, parents, Troy and Dayna, gave birth to a 9 lb, 9 oz. baby boy. Jayden Strattner-Brown was the picture of health, and a beautiful addition to their family which already included three-year-old daughter, Belle.

When Jayden was ten weeks old, Dayna and Troy began to notice some symptoms that caused them to think Jayden may have a urinary tract infection because his diapers were dry through the night. On Christmas Eve, Dayna and Troy bundled up Jayden and took him to the nearby hospital.

The emergency room doctor ran some tests, and after examining him, informed Dayna and Troy they could go home and enjoy Christmas with their family; Jayden’s tests showed no abnormalities or cause for alarm.

The family left the hospital relieved and convinced that they were just being overly-concerned parents. They returned home to spend Christmas Day with family, but despite the assertions of the doctor the night before, they became increasingly worried about Jayden. By Boxing Day, they could no longer deny something was definitely wrong with their son. His diapers remained consistently dry through the night, and he was sleepy and pale. continued on page 8

W

ow, what a summer! As the season changes, I reflect back on this jam-packed summer with all of the events for the David Foster Foundation. I am humbled by the generosity of people like you, our partners, sponsors, and volunteers that make

these events possible.

This past September, we had our annual David Foster Foundation Miracle Gala & Concert in Winnipeg, MB. The event was proudly presented by National Bank Wealth Management, in partnership with WestJet, Five Star Sponsors Cambria and FloForm, and countless other supporters. Coming to Manitoba, I was made aware that the organ donor registration rate is less than 1% of the population. A stat far too low, we teamed up with Manitoba Transplant and the City of Winnipeg to encourage Manitobans to speak with their loved ones about registering to be an organ donor.

While in Winnipeg, under beautiful sunny skies, we took part in a very special Gift of Life flag raising ceremony at City Hall to honour and recognize organ donors all over Manitoba. In addition to a beautiful flag raising ceremony, I was honoured with the Key to the City of Winnipeg by Mayor Brian Bowman, an innovative and forward-thinking leader that I admire.

I am truly humbled by this honour and hold a place for Winnipeg near and dear to my heart. Mayor Brian Bowman has been instrumental in supporting our cause and I am forever grateful for his support. I was thrilled to hear that since January 2016, Manitoba has seen a 16% increase in registered organ donors! This is the greatest organ donor registration increase in any province in a given year!! With the help of communities like Winnipeg, we are able to ensure that more organs are available and more financial support for families is accessible during the most stressful time of their lives.

Message from the CEO

A

s the year turns into fall and we watch the beautiful trees shed their autumn leaves in many brown and amber colours, I am reminded how grateful I am for my family who has the ability to come together and cherish our time together. I also know at this time of year there are many families who are not able to leave the hospital for family dinners or for their other children’s first day of school.

These families are required to be by their child’s side as they urgently wait for a life-saving organ transplant.

In September we held our 29th Miracle Gala & Concert in Winnipeg, Manitoba, raising $3.2 Million for transplant families all across Canada. We have been told that night was a record for dollars raised at a fundraising event for one night in Winnipeg… simply incredible! In our past 29 years, we have helped over 1,000 families and provided millions of dollars in direct financial support—a feat we simply could not have accomplished without a great deal of help from communities like Winnipeg! Every time we do a gala and meet new transplant families I am reminded how fragile life is. There are so many people in this world that are struggling and there are also so many amazing causes assisting those in need. I am very grateful that many have chosen to support our foundation and a cause that is so near and dear to my heart.

I am fortunate to have two beautiful, healthy daughters that I admire more and more every day. The bond a father has with his daughter is very special and something I understanding more each day. I had the pleasure of meeting Piper Coffin, liver transplant recipient, and her family in Winnipeg this year. It was evident when her father Hank spoke so passionately about their transplant journey, and the emotional struggles they faced together. You could hear it in his voice that he would simply do anything for his baby girl.

One of the biggest struggles I see our transplant families face is the inability to help their sick child as they wait for a life-saving organ transplant. No matter the love, the support, or the financial assistance provided, if an organ does not come available there is nothing a family can do.

It is a devastating defeat.

It is reflecting moments like this that speak and remind us all to slow down from our busy lives and take the time to be with our family, friends, and loved ones and remember the important aspects of life. I remember when I was a little boy and my parents said to me, “Don’t sweat the small stuff, focus your attention on your love for life and the important people in it”.

As we leave summer behind and move into the busyness of fall, may I encourage us all to not forget to take the time to be deliberate and intentional and tell the special people in our life how much they mean to us. I am so grateful to those that gave financially, for those who gave their talents, and those who gave their time at our Winnipeg Miracle Gala & Concert.

Message from the SVP, Fund Development

I

was recently in a religious setting and the theme of the sermon was the subject of being introspective of oneself.

As the person delivering the sermon delved more deeply into the theme of assessing oneself, I found the most poignant part of their message was around the veracity that we tend to judge ourselves by our intentions yet we judge others by their actions.

We tend to espouse the virtues associated with philanthropy, but in the main, the majority of us fail to act upon our good intentions. In my position as the SVP of Fund Development, I find the greatest challenge associated with moving an individual or an organization from the point of intention, talking the talk, to action, walking the talk, is the common misunderstanding around the term philanthropy. In a recent focus group, I asked the group to respond to the term philanthropy and the common response was as follows: wealth, large donations, affluence, the rich. When I looked up a synonym for the word philanthropy, the following were most common: generous, charity, compassion, and benevolence and not a hint of anything remotely associated with wealth.

I am hoping that as we close out the year that you will consider, no matter the amount, supporting the David Foster Foundation and by doing so, directly helping our families as their child goes through the lifesaving organ transplant process and require financial support. Imagine with your philanthropic support, together we will create more tomorrows for children.

I would like to take this opportunity to give a very special thank you to the Oviinbryd owners, membership, and friends for their incredible support.

Oviinbryd is a golf club situated a couple of hours north of Toronto in the lake district of Muskoka. I approached them in the spring with the idea of having a unique evening under a magnificent tent with a clear ceiling exposed to a summer evening skyline with The HITMAN–an intimate evening of storytelling, music, and laughter with the man behind the hits–David Foster.

Message from the Director of Family Relations

T

hroughout the year, the David Foster Foundation works tirelessly to fundraise for our cause to support families through the most difficult time of their lives. Our team strives to continue working with our passionate partners to increase the number of registered organ donors across Canada and the United States. Working together, we hope to save more lives of those waiting for a second chance through the gift of organ donation.

This past September, we held our Miracle Gala & Concert in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I had the pleasure of working closely with three of our families from Winnipeg whose lives have been forever changed by organ donation and the help of the David Foster Foundation. It is a true honour to meet families and witness them enjoying the next chapter of their lives.

Although we have the opportunity to meet families during hospital visits all over Canada, with more than 1,000 families that have been helped by the generosity of our donors, it is not possible to meet them all.

I look forward to the day we reach the goal of raising 30 million dollars. Thanks Winnipeg – The Miracle Gala & Concert

T

his year, the David Foster Foundation held the annual Miracle Gala & Concert in Winnipeg, MB on September 24, 2016. The event moves to a different city every year to raise funds for families whose children are going through the organ transplant process and to raise awareness for organ donation.

The Foundation, Mayor Bowman & the Manitoba Transplant team raise the Gift of Life flag.

Shockingly, Manitoba only has 1% of the population registered as organ donors. This was a statistic far too low and the Foundation decided to work with the provincial registry, Manitoba Transplant, to increase the need for organ donors in Manitoba.

On Friday, September 23, the David Foster Foundation joined Mayor Brian Bowman and the Manitoba Transplant team for a special Gift of Life flag raising.

Mayor Brian Bowman has been instrumental in supporting the Foundation’s goals and efforts in Winnipeg. He also presented David Foster with the Key to the City of Winnipeg! It was such an honour to watch Winnipeg rally together behind a cause we are so passionate about.

That night, the Founder's Dinner was held at the Fairmont Winnipeg where Jackie Evancho, Sinbad, The Tenors, and Kelly Levesque shared their talents with the intimate group of VIPs and sponsors. David Foster and Michael Ravenhill also spoke candidly about the many stories that go with four decades of creating hits and music icons.

On Saturday, 700 gala guests, 100 volunteers, and thousands of arena bowl ticket holders arrived at the MTS Centre to watch a one-of-a-kind show. Celebrities, influential community and business leaders, and VIPs walked the purple carpet at the MTS Centre, which was

The Foundation honoured four extraordinary individuals with the Humanitarian of the Year Visionary Award Winners, Gail Asper, Bonnie & John Buhler, and Hartley Richardson for their amazing humanitarian accomplishments in Winnipeg and all across Canada.

Throughout the evening there was laughter, there was crying, and there were memories made. Seal, Michael Bolton, Carly Rae Jepson, The Tenors, Jackie Evancho, and Sinbad took the stage with David Foster and performed one of the best shows yet!

To get the best care possible, they decided it was time to go to a pediatric hospital. Once in the emergency examining room at the Winnipeg Health Science Centre Children Hospital, the doctors quickly detected an irregularity in Jayden’s heart. A series of tests ensued, and Jayden cried as the medical team poked and prodded his little body. Dayna held Jayden closely to her chest to comfort him as he reeled from the repeated intrusions on his body. Then without warning, Jayden’s heart stopped and his little body turned blue and became still in Dayna’s arms. The nurse quickly pulled Jayden from Dayna. The room immediately became alive with a flurry of doctors and nurses who began working on Jayden. Dayna and Troy stood helpless as they watched the medical team perform Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation on their son, stunned that their beautiful baby boy was laying close to death and there was nothing they could do to help him.

As the emergency room continued to fill with more members of the medical team, it was too much to bear.

Dayna and Troy had to leave the room and anxiously paced the halls of the hospital fearing the worst.

When the doctor was finally able to meet with them, they learned Jayden was still alive, but he was not out of the woods by any means. Jayden needed to be put on life support and unfortunately there was no pediatric surgeon available on Boxing Day to perform the procedure. The medical team made a desperate call to the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton, and received their first piece of good luck: the team in Edmonton happened to know of a pediatric surgeon visiting a family in Winnipeg for the holidays. Without hesitation, the doctor came to the aid of the family and the medical team at Winnipeg Children’s Health

Science Centre. Jayden was diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart in which the main pumping chamber becomes enlarged, weakened, and cannot pump blood efficiently to the rest of the body. In Jayden’s case, it caused heart failure. Jayden needed medical care beyond what the hospital in Winnipeg could provide and the air ambulance was dispatched from Edmonton. Even with Jayden on life support, there was no guarantee of the outcome, and the decision was made to baptize Jayden as they waited for the air ambulance to arrive. The family gathered around the hospital bed where Jayden lay hooked up to tubes and monitors to keep him alive. They prayed as the pastor baptized their ten-week-old son, and whispered messages of love and encouragement into his ear.

When the team arrived to transfer Jayden from Winnipeg to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Edmonton, the family had to say their goodbyes. They didn’t know if they would ever see their son alive again. There was no additional space available on the air ambulance for Jayden’s parents, so they headed for the airport to follow their son to Edmonton, not knowing what they would be faced with when they arrived. With little time, Troy and Dayna were only able to grab a few necessities before boarding the plane to Edmonton, and had to leave their daughter, Belle, to be cared for by family. Dayna and Troy found themselves unexpectedly uprooted from their lives, away from the support of family and friends as they made their way to the Edmonton Stollery Children’s Hospital Intensive Care Unit, two provinces away, to be with their baby while he fought for his life.

Jayden remained on life support for six days before they were able to stabilize him and begin the process of extubating him. Over the next few weeks Jayden’s health began to slowly improve. Thankfully, Troy’s work was very supportive of the family and continued to pay his salary when he wasn’t working, so he could be there for his family in their time of need. However, weeks turned to months, and Troy had no option but to return to Winnipeg to go back to work. Dayna remained in Edmonton, separated from her daughter and husband and faced with making the day to day medical decisions on her own. The cardiologists continued to treat Jayden’s Dilated Cardiomyopathy, but his health once again began to deteriorate, and it became apparent that the only option to save Jayden’s life was a heart transplant. In February 2009, Jayden was officially listed for a lifesaving heart transplant. Dayna remained isolated from family and friends in Edmonton, and she was faced with the fact that another child would have to lose their life in order for Jayden's to be saved.

In an effort to provide support to the family, the transplant social worker contacted the David Foster Foundation to help cover the costs that were mounting up, and try to keep the family together. With the help of the Foundation, Troy and Belle were able to fly out regularly for visits, and provide much needed moral support for Dayna and Jayden. On May 29, 2009, during a family visit they received the call they had been desperately waited for; there was a donor heart for Jayden and it was a match.

After almost four hours of surgery the family received the news that the transplant was successful! Over the next few months, Jayden and Dayna remained in Edmonton while Jayden slowly recovered, and Troy and Belle flew back and forth regularly from Winnipeg.

Without the financial help of the David Foster Foundation, it would have been impossible for the Strattner-Brown family to remain so closely connected, and still manage to cover their basic living expenses.

The David Foster Foundation continued to support the family’s frequent travel until they could be reunited in Winnipeg. Troy and Dayna maintain Jayden’s strength and determination to live was because they were able to be together as a family by his side.

Almost seven years after his transplant, Jayden continues to take anti-rejection medications every twelve hours which will be required for the rest of his life. He has regular blood work done to ensure his body continues to accept his new heart, and will always have to have his health closely monitored, but despite that, he remains a happy, healthy boy with an aspiration of becoming a professional soccer player.

4th Annual Vancouver Island Motor Gathering

n Sunday, September 18, 2016, the David Foster Foundation was thrilled to participate in the 4th Annual Vancouver Island Motor Gathering with community partner, GAIN Premium Dealer Group! This year, the event was held at the brand new state-ofthe-art Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit located in beautiful Cowichan, BC. The event brought nearly 10,000 spectators, 550 vehicles, 85 sponsors, 2 charities, and over $150,000 raised!

Alongside the Cowichan District Hospital Foundation, the David Foster Foundation was honoured to be a benefactor at this special event supporting children’s charities. One of the special helpers included Evanne, two-time heart transplant recipient, and her younger brother, who both helped with games and discussions about organ donation.

Community partners like GAIN Premium Dealer Group, allow the Foundation to keep families together as their child goes through the life-saving organ transplant process. With a lot of hard work and dedication, $100,000 was raised to help transplant families all across Canada. The Foundation is incredibly honoured by the generosity and passion GAIN Premium Dealer Group shows towards the Foundation and cause.

A huge thank you to Dr. Sylvester Chuang, GAIN Premium Dealer Group, Peter Trzewick, Cindy Mui, and all of the spectators and volunteers who attended to support this year’s Vancouver Island Motor Gathering!

n August 11, 2016, the David Foster Foundation teamed up with Oviinbyrd, an exclusive golf club, in beautiful Muskoka, ON. This lake district is known for its beauty, serenity, and has been listed as one of National Geographic Traveler’s top destinations and #1 in Ten Best Trips of the Summer.

The evening started with an intimate cocktail reception in the clubhouse followed by dinner in a beautiful transparent tent that let the outside in. David Foster took the stage with Mike Ravenhill, David Foster Foundation CEO, in front of 200 guests to share stories of four amazing decades of producing music icons and hits through humour, storytelling, and music.

American R&B, gospel singer, and well-known American Idol contestant, Ruben Studdard, and singer-songwriter Shelea Frazier joined David Foster on stage to deliver a unique one-of-a-kind show. The crowd was wowed

by Ruben Studdard’s ability to deliver lyrics on the spot and Shelea Frazier’s Whitney Houston medley.
