PLAYED FOR BOTH: NICLAS VEMMELUND
Niclas Vemmelund had spells with FC Fyn, Odense BK, BK Marienlyst in Denmark, Stjanrnan in Iceland and Swedish side IF Brommapojkarna before he joined Derry City on a free transfer in 2016
After taking some time to settle into this new team, Vemmelund settled into the Derry City defence playing in the centre or as a full-back, He established himself as a key player in Kenny Shiels’ side, helping the Candystripes finish third in the 2016 season. He made his debut in the 2-1 opening day defeat to Finn Harps in Ballybofey. Derry recovered from that defeat to enjoy a very good season. Vemmelund made 32 league appearances in total. Vemmelund was targeted by Stephen Kenny to not only challenge Paddy Barrett for the role as Brian Gartland’s partner in the centre of defence, but also to provide cover for Sean Gannon and Dane Massey. He made his league debut in the 2-1 win over Shamrock Rovers on 24th February 2017 and went on to make 23 league appearances. He scored his first goal for Dundalk in the 2-1 defeat at Tallaght Stadium in May before scoring again seven days later in the 4-0 win over Sligo Rovers. He also scored in the 1-1 draw with Cork City in the FAI Cup Final, a match that proved to be his final game for the club and ended in a penalty shootout defeat. The highlight of this career at Dundalk was his excellent performances in the 2017 UEFA Champions League encounters with Rosenborg. His commanding display against Nicklas Bendtner led to him being linked with moves to top level Scandinavian clubs.

to persuade him to stay, Vemmelund wished to return to Denmark and play part-time football with Middelfart Ballklub in the third tier of Danish football. He also returned to college to study construction and architecture. His partner recently gave birth to their first child.
