We started our Grade 0 year with great enthusiasm. During our “All About ME!” theme we learnt how we looked on the inside too.

After meeting Mr. Bones in the science lab we worked in groups to create a skeleton our of blocks. It was a real joint effort! We had a wonderful sensory day as we explored different ways to mix colours, finger painting in shaving cream was our favourite. Our final STEAM task was to make a house for ‘the little pig’ out of toothpicks and marshmallows that would withstand a blast from the ‘Big bad Hairdryer’.

The second term was a very different term for all of us, Lockdown level 5 meant we couldn’t go anywhere not even to school. We began the journey of learning at home. We had a Zoom slot every morning with our teacher and eight or nine of our friends. Then we followed the Grade 0 website where our teachers posted all our work. We didn’t have to get up so early and it was great to have school in our pyjamas. Each morning ended with a story time where we met with our whole class. We started off the term with the “Changing Seasons” Theme. We then had lots of interesting adventures while studying “Wild Animals”. We even had online game drives with Wild Earth. After half-term we really missed our friends and learning online was not such fun anymore, we longed to be back playing at school.

The third term will be remembered as a very special time. There was great excitement when the girls returned to school for the first time in many months. “Courage always”, our Kingsmead motto, was present every day and we were so proud of our Grade 0s who showed us how independent and brave they were. We soon set to work with our theme “Spring” and there was so much fun in store. We watched chicks hatching in an incubator and we dissected flowers, observing the wonders of spring in our beautiful gardens. In our theme “Lifecycles” we used many Discovery Learning opportunities to learn about frogs, ladybirds, bees and silkworms. The Grade 0s had a picnic with their Grade 7 buddies, this was a highlight of the year for them. Well done, Grade 0’s of 2020!
