MATRIC DANCE

Being part of the Matric Dance Committee was one of the most enriching experiences of our high school career. Tasked with planning, organising and executing a high-quality event, our grade was determined to work to the best of our ability. Little did we know how challenging this task would prove to be.

The obstacle of bringing in funds for the event was one which we worked to overcome. We generated enough funds to host this much awaited event through karaoke evenings, a raffle, cake-and-candy sales, speaker evenings, the social and much more. We thoroughly enjoyed participating in fundraisers and spending time with our peers. The MDC, headed by Maxine Muller and overseen by Miss C Pillay, made all the necessary preparations for the event. The decor had to be elegant yet comfortable. The dining had to be aesthetic yet delicious. The gifts and invitations had to be creative yet stunning. And most of all, the execution had to be perfect overall.

The chosen theme for the 2020 Matric Dance was inspired by Morocco. The actual evening of the dance commenced flawlessly, although we did experience a slight hiccup concerning the teachers table and the lack of cutlery. The Matric Class of 2020 looked absolutely beautiful, but we expected nothing less from such a kind, compassionate and gracious grade. The Grade 11s thoroughly enjoyed spending the evening with the Grade 12s and found the job of waitering both entertaining and exciting.

Miss Pillay was phenomenal in aiding the Grade 11s throughout the process in order to put on such an event. She played an instrumental role in mentoring the MDC and without her input the Grade 12s might have ended up eating off paper plates! Miss Pillay is the epitome of patience and dedication. Her perseverance was contagious throughout the planning phase. She kept us motivated and focused with her cool temper and approachable demeanor.

The 2020 Matric Dance was one of the last social events before COVID-19 changed our lives. It will forever be a memorable experience which we will cherish dearly. The planning, preparation and the event itself brought our grade together, taught us valuable life lessons and allowed us to work as a team. The evening was surreal, for both Matrics and Grade 11s and we would not trade the experience for the world!

To the Matric Class of 2020, we hope your evening was as special and as magical as we hoped it to be. Thank you for allowing us to share this surreal experience with you. We love you always!
