GRADE 8 CAMP

Interesting, awesome, amazing and wonderful… These are just some of the many words I could use to describe our Grade 8 Camp. Camp began with a challenging, yet super-enjoyable activity: the balance beam. In teams of two, we had to learn to trust each other by holding hands while trying to balance on a beam that became more narrow as we moved along.

We then had one of the things I’ve been waiting to do my whole life, a mud fight. It was so much fun. We also did an obstacle course, which was marvelous.

We made unforgettable memories and had an awesome time. The food at camp was very good and we are extremely grateful for the people who took time out of their day to cook delicious food for us.

Thank you to the facilitators who made camp an incredible experience. We also appreciate the teachers who left their families and homes to accompany us on a camp that will never be forgotten! On behalf of the Grade 8s, I want to thank everyone for the hard work they put in to make this camp an amazing experience.

ORIENTATION WEEK

Grade 8

The transition into high school for any teen can be tough but when you have a nurturing school that guides you through every step, it becomes a lot easier. During the first week of school the new Grade 8s of 2020 got to experience the Grade 8 Orientation Week. An entire week focused on making our transition into high school easy, stress free and enjoyable. It was a bridge built for us to walk over with no fear, as we moved from our junior school to the high school!

At the start of the orientation week, we had talks about the new subjects we’d be taking. This was a great opportunity to meet all our new teachers and learn more about our new subjects. During these sessions we also met the Grade 12s in charge of the various committees, the service staff and other high school staff members. This was done in case we needed clarification and so we would know who to go to for help if we had any questions during the year.

Each Grade 8 girl was paired with a Matric who would be their Grade 12 Buddy for the year. These Grade 12 buddies were always around in case we had any questions, needed some directions to class or even just to be someone to talk to about how we were feeling about high school. We were also allocated Grade 9 Friends who were there if we needed advice from someone closer to our age, who had just recently experienced the transition into high school.

Service is a significant part of the Kingsmead College Ethos. To introduce us to the new service hour system in the high school, Kingsmead organised a Hop on hop off Service Excursion for the Grade 8s. On this excursion we visited multiple organisations and offered our services to the community without expecting a reward. One of the places we stopped at was the Wilds Park where we helped the gardeners pull out all the weeds in the park. This was a wonderful outdoor opportunity where we got to help others as well as have fun and get to know our friends and new classmates.

Despite all the adjustments we have had to make when settling down into our new high school environment, we managed to have a lot of fun. For example, the Grade 12s would make us do the funniest things they could think of, like wearing our uniform backwards, for an entire week. This was the perfect ice breaker activity for our grade and allowed us to get to know the new girls, as well as reconnect with the old ones. So, I can confidently say that our transition into high school has been beyond successful and, by the time we leave, we will have made so many memories which we will keep in our minds and hearts forever.
