MY DAY

Hi, I’m Alex. It’s my school day. So I wake up at 6:30 a.m. I go to the bathroom and take a shower and wash my hair. Later I get dressed and come back to the bathroom to dry my head. My mum makes breakfast. I eat and go to school. I pop into my friends: Natalie and Simon and we go to school together. Simon’s 9 years old and Natalie’s 14. Lessons start

at 8 a.m. One lesson lasts 45 minutes. I finish my classes at 3 p.m. I go to my grandma’s home. Then I eat dinner with her and I go home. I do my homework, but I do only easy homework. I go to additional classes. I learn to play the guitar, Russian, German and English. On Monday I have English and German, on Tuesday and Thursday I have Russian. On Tuesday I learn to play the guitar too. I usually get back by car, because my dad or my mum picks me up. When I’m at home, I study. Sometimes I watch TV series with my mum. But

I prefer to read information about my friend and my favorite band. Than I chat with my best friends. I have a shower at 9 p.m. or 10 p.m. I go to bed and I read school reading. Then I go to sleep at 11 p.m. In the week I have only 2 days free - Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday I wake up at 10 a.m. my mum and I make breakfast together. We eat and later we clean home. I often do the ironing or dusting. After I clean home, I’ve got free time. I watch movies, meet my friend or sleep. This is my day. What about yours?

An ordinary day of the student in Hristo Smirnenski Every morning the student wakes up, washes his face and has breakfast. After that he dresses up and goes to school. lessons finish at 1:00 in the afternoon and the student goes home. He has break, lunch and starts doing homework. If there is time he goes out with friends or plays computer games. During the dinner he shares how his day is spent. After that he has a shower and goes to bed. By Valentin Yachev from Bulgaria

HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH Human Rights Watch was established in 1978, as a private American international non-governmental organization with the name Helsinki Watch. Their main task was to focus on states that commit human rights violations. During the 80’s it were formed several organizations which eventually formed an organization called Human Right Watch. We have interviewed Ole Solvang which comes from our hometown, Alvdal. He works in Human Rights Watch. http://www.youtube.com/ w a t c h ? v=YMfE9_q6kvw&feature= player_embedded http://www.youtube.com/ user/HumanRightsWatch What were your ambitions in your childhood? I had no particular ambitions. Early in my childhood I wanted to work with something international. I think I wanted to work with it because my parents took me on some trips. My mother went to work abroad when I was in lower secondary school. Do other Norwegians work in the organization? There are two other Norwegians, who work for Hu-

man Rights Watch. One of them is Jan Egeland. He is a man with extensive experience and has worked both of the Norwegian Foreign Ministry, The Norwegian Red Cross and the United Nations before he started working with us. The other person is Caroline Eriksen. She is England’s assistant. There is always room for more Norwegians.

Where do you sleep when you are on a mission? It varies. On some missions we sleep at a hotel. We obviously choose not the most expensive hotels, but they are usually completely unravel. Many times we have to adapt ourselves to the conditions. In Syria, some houses have been very nice but I have also slept on the floor without any mattress. In the last three nights in Syria, we spent the nights outside under the open sky in the countryside because we were worried about air raids in the village where we were

based. It turned out to be wise. The last day, a bomb from an airplane hit a house that was 50 meters away from the house we usually stayed. http://www.youtube.com/ w a t c h ? v=YMfE9_q6kvw&feature=pla yer_embedded http://www.youtube.com/ user/HumanRightsWatch What impressions do the job to you? The job provides many different impressions. Sometimes it's hard to see that ordinary people are subjected to gross human rights abuses. Some of the things that make the biggest impressions are when children are killed, injured or arrested and tortured. It has been particularly difficult to work with it in Syria where children are exposed to many different attacks very often. But the job gives also very positive impressions. As war usually brings out the worst in people it also brings something good out of people. It is always very inspiring when we see people helping each other, although they often expose themselves to danger itself. It is also impressive to see how strong some people, even if they or their families have been subjected to terrible things.

INTERVIEWS What do you do to process all the impressions? I'm lucky to have a wife who works with exactly the same. We talk a lot about what we see and experience. I think this is very important. You have to share impressions. I think it would be very difficult to deal with it all alone. In addition, it is important to maintain a gentle optimism. I try to focus on the positive when I can, that we sometimes are able to help people, and sometimes we even save lives. It is important not to focus on how difficult everything is. Then it is easy to despair. Solan’s (Alvdal’s mascot) motto is good: For he is a trifle difficult, the impossible is a challenge Are there any advantages or disadvantages to come from a little village as Alvdal? The main advantage of growing up in a small village as Alvdal is that you have a very safe and good upbringing. There are not too many dangers here and you develop friendships that last a lifetime. It provides a good foundation to move out into the world later. Alvdal will always be "home." The downside of growing up in Alvdal is that we have it too good. I think it's almost hard for us to understand what goes on outside the in the world. It can also be a bit difficult to "get out" of Alvdal the first few times. Therefore I think it is very important to be involved, watch the evening news,

read about what goes on in the outside world, and to travel to see with your own eyes how different the world is. Then you can decide afterwards that Alvdal is still the place to stay (sometimes I think it myself), but then you have at least tried something else and made a conscious choice. I think you're going to set more appreciative of the positive aspects of Alvdal. What is the worst thing you've experienced in the workplace? I usually remember the first and last impressions best. When I worked in Uzbekistan in 2002, I followed a trial to document human rights abuses. Both of the accused, witnesses and the defendant's family members had been grossly tortured. Even so, the culprits were sentenced to death. At that time, as did the very idea that the world could be so unfair and that there was nothing I could do about it. At least so it felt like then. But I also remember some of the last impressions of Syria last week. On Friday it was the artillery attack on a building 200 meters from the hospital where we were. A few minutes later, they brought in a 10 years old boy. He had been hit, so much of his head was gone, and he was obviously dead when they brought him. It made quite an impression. Is there a gender dominated profession?

PAGE

There are very many women who work in Human Rights. I think there are a lot of more women than men who work for Human Rights Watch. But unfortunately, most of the bosses are men, as in many other organizations. So we need more men in the organization in general, but more female managers. How was it to learn Russian, and how is it to be fluent Russian in everyday life? Russian was very hard to learn! I've never studied so much and worked so hard. I got up at 5 AM every morning and studied all day until I went to bed around 10 o'clock At the most, we had to learn about 150 new Russian words every day. But it was worth it. To know a language that not everyone else, did that I got very good job offers and that was how I managed to get my first job at Human Rights Watch. You also get much better contact with people when you can speak their language. I'm not so much with the Russian daily anymore. But my wife is Russian and she has a 12year-old son. We try to speak Russian sometimes (mostly so I do not forget everything), but I must admit that it is mostly in English. But Russian is obviously very handy when in-laws come to visit.

SPORT ROAR STEIHAUG By: Rolf 16.10.2012

Steihaug

Which sport do you do? I do shooting. How long have you been doing that? I started in 1983 – 2012. Why did you begin with shooting? My father started shooting. Do your girlfriend like shooting? A little. How long do you exercise? One hour a week.

Are you good with shooting? So so. What is the best thing you’ve got to? I won at The National Championship Veteran55 in field.

The sport in Bulgaria The most popular sports in Bulgaria are football, basketball, volleyball, tennis and gymnastics. Due to the poor finance sports in Bulgaria are not on such advanced level as the sports for example in England, but despite that young people still get involved in them.

Probably one of the most popular sports in Bulgaria is football. Bulgarian players are known all over the world for their skills.

Many European teams often buy out players in the Bulgarian national championship; this is probably the only way for Bulgarian players to succeed in sports. Some of the most successful soccer players from Bulgaria are Dimitar Berbatov, Hristo Soichkov and Martin Petrov. Dimitar Berbatov and Martin Petrov are now playing in the English premiership and Hristo Stoichkov has played in the Spanish Grand Barcelona. Like all of the sports in Bulgaria, players that stay in Bulgaria often get the minimum wage for that country. One of the best gym athletes of Bulgaria is Jordan Iovchev. He is probably one of the most successful gym athletes in the history of the sports in Bulgaria. Jordan Iovchev usually wins the gold medal at the Olympics.

Bulgaria fields one of the leading volleyball teams in Europe and the world. As of January 2009 the team held 4th place in the world according to FIVB rankings. Bulgaria has regularly featured in the Top 10.
