The new skatepark, toilets and playground planned for Ngataringa Park have been put on hold, after a council report found the contents of the soil too dangerous for any development. The site โneeds to be remediated in its entirety ahead of any development,โ a summary of the report said. Tests were undertaken in the area next to Ngataringa Community Garden in preparation for the
toilet block and the results have put all aspects of the project โon hold.โ Devonport-Takapuna Local Board member and parks portfolio holder Grant Gillon said the board was disappointed but โkeeping an eyeโ on the project. โWe donโt want to take it off the agenda because if itโs not in the Long Term Plan, we wonโt be able to fund it,โ he said. The proposed site is on reclaimed land that was
used as Devonportโs dump, until it was capped with concrete and, in 1994, became a public park. The skatepark was built on top in 2000 with funding from Devonport Rotary. It has been a popular spot for local skateboarders, scooter riders and BMX cyclists ever since. For years it has had problems. Structural failures due to subsidence have caused drainage issues To page 11
