It was put on hold for February 2014 due to Devonport Library construction compromising the Windsor Reserve site. Now it is gone

Local lads lending a building hand in Cambodia

Trip planning over a Friday-night beer… (from left to right) builders and electricians Todd Evans, Adrien Fleury, Ben Blucher and Joel Collins are best mates and planning to help people less fortunate than themselves Four local tradies who have been friends since schooldays are planning to build houses for charity as part of their OE to Asia.

In December flatmates Todd Evans, Adrien Fleury, Ben Blucher and Joel Collins will travel to Asia together for about six months.

The 23-year-old builders and electricians hope to spend at least one month building houses for the poor in Cambodia.

They are now busy fundraising to buy the materials. They are working with Volunteer Build Cambodia, who organise the construction. “The more money we raise, the longer we can stay and build. We have a one-way ticket,” says Blucher.

They aim to raise $5,000 and already have about $1,000 from donations and a quiz night they put on for their mates.

On 19 October Calliope Road Cafe will host a special $30 lunch, with money going towards their project. The four former Takapuna Grammar and Belmont Intermediate School students are planning sausage sizzles at local schools as well.

The lads do a lot together. As kids it was cricket and rugby, now they share a Devonport flat. Two years ago, all except Fleury travelled to Thailand, where they had the opportunity to volunteer in a slum.

Evans says: “The Burgesses, a Devonport family, lived there and we helped them give

milk powder to the mothers and families that needed it.

It was an eye-opening experience that got them thinking they wanted to help more on their next trip.

Blucher says one of the biggest challenges will be the lack of power. “We will have to put down our power tools for some hand tools. It’s going to be great to put ourselves out of our comfort zone.”

“We just want to help out some struggling people,” adds Evans.

TGS cycling a tour de force

New national record holder… Oscar Elworthy smashed the national under-16 time trial record The Takapuna Grammar School (TGS) cycling team has had one of its most successful national secondary school championships, winning 17 medals and setting one new national record.

At the New Zealand Secondary School Individual Cycling Championships, Oscar Elworthy slashed the U16 individual time-trial record by seven seconds. He completed the 4km course in 5:17.82 minutes. He also won bronze in the 800m hill climb and placed tenth in the criterium, to finish second overall across the three events.

It was only the third time a TGS rider has set a national record. Adam McPheat recorded one last year and John Crooks in 1990.

Oscar’s older brother, and TGS Head Boy, Harry Elworthy came second in the U20 individual time trial, won the hill climb and came second in the criterium race to place second overall.

U14 rider Joshua Kench came third in the hill climb, third in the criterium and placed fourth overall.

Joshua’s older brother Jacob Kench placed second in the U16 criterium and came second overall. His classmate Harry Waine came third in the U16 individual time trial and second on the hill.

Katherine Badham came second in the U17 individual time trial. Ellie Cowan came third in the U20 criterium. Vincent Allen placed third in the U17 hill climb and Adam McPheat came third in the U15 hill climb.

The school achieved 48 top-ten places in total. TGS Sports Coordinator Sharon Davies says cycling is the sport that is currently reaping the most medals for the school.

“Get the right people involved, get some enthusiasm behind it, get kids doing something

they enjoy and can see value in – competitively, socially and physically- build a programme and get a great community behind it and there you have it. Success builds success,” she says.

Weeding unveils historic wall on Mt Victoria

Off-the-wall discovery… Roger Giles and his dog Jess reveal the surrounding wall of a historic cannon battery On his latest mission to clear Mt Victoria of noxious weeds, Roger Giles hit a wall.

But far from being the end of the road, this one was part of Fort Victoria, built in 1885.

“I had read about a creeper and knew where a patch of it was on the mountain. When I pulled it out with the kikuyu grass around it, I found this wall, built of stacked scoria stones without any mortar,” says Giles.

“Why would they have a wall here? Then I remembered a photo I had seen at the Devonport Museum while searching for information on my house,” he says.

The photo, taken in 1900, shows a woman in Victorian dress standing next to one of three cannons abutting a wall. The trig in the background still stands on the mountain and, judging by its location in the photo, Giles believes he found the spot where the guns used to stand.

Mt Victoria’s summit was fortified in 1885, as a result of the threat of a Russian invasion. A four-gun battery of 64 pound cannons was built.

A coastal fort lies buried beneath the summit and the 8-inch disappearing gun, which is intact was added in 1899. By 1893, the 64-pounders were downgraded to “saluting guns” and in 1911 they were removed, first to Windsor Reserve, then to the Devonport Naval Base, where they are preserved today.

Giles says: “People always said the battery was on the northern terrace, but I think they got it wrong. I think the guns must have been pointing southwest from here.”

“I think I probably found the extent of the wall because you can see it taper off into the ground at the end,” he says.

Giles is undoubtedly Mt Victoria’s most dedicated guardian. He visits the mountain daily with his dog Jess, collecting litter and pulling weeds where he finds them. As president of the Bunker, which is housed on the cone, he also runs concerts and the venue’s bar.

All of last year, he attacked the mountain’s spreading agapanthus with an axe. “It was a major operation but I got there in the end.

Where I weeded, it is basically gone, and I left it wherever it holds up the bank. Over the last six months, I have only had to maintain it a bit,” he says.

Silence – the new approach to community policing Just over a month ago, a body was found at the bottom of Winscombe Cove, Belmont.

Despite there being a large Police presence, taped-off areas, forensic teams in white suits and, somewhat perplexingly, an armed police guard, not a peep in the press. When police were asked about the incident (by the Devonport Flagstaff) – silence. No comment.

It turned out to be the body of a young Navy rating and only when the family made pleas to the public for information, did the name come out. But not nationally, not by the Herald or any other large paper, or by the TV or radio. Just by the Devonport Flagstaff.

We will have to wait for the Coroner’s report in a few years’ time before we learn any more.

So how can this be? A young man dies on a public beach, the police carry out an investigation publicly, and yet we are not to know what on earth is going on in what is supposedly one of Auckland’s top streets?

Move forward to the night of the All Black win in Napier. A house party in Westwell Ave

gets out of control, the police are called and before you know it we have a mass of screaming, smashing kids being pushed down Seacliffe Ave by a line of police, batons out shouting, “Move, Move,” in unison.

The trail left behind is one of smashed wing mirrors, doors kicked in, bottles and utterly perplexed residents. Police vans race up and down, kids are bundled into the back, details taken and dropped off to their homes with a telling off.

Is it mentioned in the press? Nope….do the police visit Takapuna Grammar where most of the kids came from and give them a dressing down. Nope. Does the Headmaster even know? Nope.

Safer Communities Together is the police catchphrase…but here’s the catch. If the police adopt silence as their mantra, if they are not forthcoming to our communities with what’s actually going on and call upon the community for support – how on earth is their goal ever going to be reached?

Charity shop theft

On Tuesday September 9 two pieces were apparently stolen from the Anglican Community shop at 6 Wynyard St. A lead crystal bowl and brass ‘fire dogs’ were noticed by volunteers as missing, probably taken sometime in the late morning.

It is hard to keep track of all our stock but

these particular items stood out.

Much more work needed to protect Heritage buildings I appreciate the opportunity to have had my say, but your misquote of what I said (Flagstaff September 5) is very funny and perhaps you might like to do a follow-up to clarify what is meant. Rather than “manure” I said milieu…. very clever freudian slip for the crappy little buildings (so called by many) around landmark buildings that make them special and give them the important context and streetscape value they need and deserve.

After the meeting I followed up with Chris Finlayson regarding the Significant Building Fund he referred to, but no building that has a commercial activity is eligible. I have also

spoken to the Chair of the Omaru Whitestone Civic Trust (OWCT) who has confirmed that the existing criteria set for the Landmarks List means that Oamaru or the collection owned by the OWCT will not reach the bar for listing.

If this is the case for Oamaru, Devonport will have no chance.

My concerns are two-fold; 1) That there needs to be a robust and clear method of setting priorities for which historic places are protected and maintained in perpetuity (strengthened, conserved and maintained); 2) Any policy that sets this priority needs to come with adequate funding and incentives to

achieve this.

Nothing I heard at last Thursday’s meeting addressed these concerns. We have so many lists of historic things and none are coodinated.

The last thing we need is another and the difficulity for me is that there appers to be very little systematic approach to the formation of these lists.

Worst of all is that it costs money to manage and preserve historic places and with over 50% privately owned there is a substantial lack of incentives/funding to facilitate an acceptable outcome at many levels.

The tenor of questions from Bayswater residents at the meeting was basic incredulity, but with the benefit of hindsight it can be seen that the wording of those sections of the Act were written specifically to suit Bayswater Marina Ltd. It must have been a carefully kept secret among National Party officials as no member of the opposition or member of the public had any idea of the true reason for the wording used. The Bill for this Act of Parliament would have gone through a Select Committee process and still no whisper leaked out of what was going on.

Our local MP at the time was Wayne Mapp who has now retired from Parliament. I believe he now works for the Law Commission.

The Law Commission writes the law. Can we look forward to more of this sort of activity from a National Government?

Last week Ron Copeland asked me if I could help research how the Bayswater marina could have changed hands three times since being built but had been sold to the developer, according to officials at Maggie’s meeting at the Peter Blake Hall, Bayswater Primary School .

My research showed that the Act that superseded the Seabed and Foreshore Act 2004 was the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act 2011. This Act of Parliament was dated 31 March 2011 and the most convenient way of checking was to look at the copy of the bound statutes held by the Takapuna Library.

Try looking at 2011 Vol I page 30.

It is all there under Part 2, Subpart 3 – Reclaimed Land and is covered by Sections 32-37 and 44-45. There are annotations of corrections to the wording, which are glued into the spine side of the page. The latest was an alteration in 2013. Just in time before

I was born in 1955, and my parents drove us over the Auckland Harbour Bridge when it opened in 1959.

I have lived on the North Shore for 20 years and cannot understand why I can’t walk or cycle over this part of State Highway 1.

For over a decade now there have been murmurings of pedestrian access although the people who should be making this happen don’t.

To many this is a right and not a privilege, but now we are to replace a three-year-old Te Wero bridge with something in the order of $25million. Are we so divorced from reality that we can’t work out our priorities?

Why can’t Aucklanders walk or cycle across our harbour bridge Mr Mayor?

No logic in police secrecy over crimes The editor creating our own crimewatch column should be congratulated, crazy that the situation is. There is no logic in police secrecy as to notified crimes.

The writer who spoke of the theft of a local contractor’s equipment and vehicles had a point. There are about 400,000 crimes reported nationwide a year, or so I read in the Herald, of which about half are followed through thoroughly. That’s one cop per incident every 18 days. Policing has the same issues as council does in efficiency and willingness.

Putting on more staff won’t find the lost contractor’s equipment or vehicles. Unless these guys get off their bums and get more investigative. It astounds me that crime is so low in Devonport as I’ve had 20 reasons to call police in 20 years.

On another note our council and Auckland Transport and others work inside a secretmeeting world, doing as they please contrary to lawful procedures. They invent and create their own laws and agendas as they progress

the things they see fit to promote. It’s not for Colmar Brunton or Simon Herbert to put up propaganda or polls that support ignorance of the basic conservation rules we have for our city or harbourbed. The polls are irrelevant and not democratic ways to create policy on the run. The same applies to any of you that think your opinion should circumnavigate the laws or rule-making procedures that were set to protect the harbour and our environment. All this stuff on council and police antics is a result of secrecy and underhanded backroom deals.

Reading the last few papers it seems clear that police secrecy and council closed meetings are set to continue. I hope Chris Powell (previous letter writer) adds something positive to the debate with his knowledge, that adds to the more positive growth of our environment and our safety from crime on the North Shore and the preservation of democracy.

Then a trio of lovely women, most in their 70’s, got to work with spray and cloths. They cleaned all the tables and benches and restored the chairs to their proper order.

Some of the men washed all the dishes and put Stores in Albany and them through the steriliser. Another woman put the dishes away. Within 15 minutes the hall and Newmarket already closed kitchen were pristine. No one had to tell these people what to do or ask them to help.

In direct contrast, my husband and I observed the behaviour of several groups of teenagers at a fast-food restaurant. When they had finished eating they abandoned their trays, rubbish, cups etc. on the tables and left. Helping the village raise its children

Nurturing children… after 20 years Tessa Dunleavy still loves working at Devonport Community House crèche

Tessa Dunleavy has been calling the Devonport Community House Crèche her “home away from home” for the last 20 years.

She started teaching there in 1994 and has been its manager since 2006. A winner of a 2008 national teaching excellence award, Dunleavy has helped raise hundreds of local children. She spoke to Maire Vieth.

Tessa Dunleavy’s small office is full of colour. There are rainbow-like shelves full of managers’ folders and files, and the walls are covered in childrens’ drawings, paintings and collages. A guitar is tucked in the corner.

It is a busy room. Staff members come and go and children regularly drop in for a nosey or a hug. The Devonport Community House Crèche runs nine sessions a week, for 90 children from 18 months to four years old. Another 103 children are currently on the crèche waiting list.

Dunleavy spends only half of her time on management at the crèche. She insists on teaching the rest of the time. “As a manager, I lead from the bottom up, to encourage my colleagues to reach their potential,” she says about her seven part-time staff members.

“And I just want to stay close to the kids, because teaching is still my passion.”

Early childhood teaching has been Dunleavy’s vocation since her last year at Carmel College, when she helped out at Milford Kindergarten under the guidance of head teacher Jaye Stewart. “I thought that I wanted to teach but I wanted to make sure I was right,” Dunleavy says.

Stewart, a Devonport local, became an early mentor. “She was an innovator, someone we all looked up to. It was great for me to meet her as a young person and see her work,” Dunleavy says.

Dunleavy enrolled at Auckland Teachers College in Epsom. “I flatted on Glen Road in Devonport. I tried to live in Remuera for four months but missed the sea and moved here to be close to it and the ferry,” she says.

During the early 1980s, Dunleavy got her first job at Bayswater/Belmont Kindergarten. “It was an amazing introduction.

There were many Navy families there and I learned a lot about the rewards of working in a close community,” Dunleavy says.

What did she learn? “Basically, the more you put in, the more you get out,” Dunleavy says. “I made a lot of strong connections with those families and am godmother to some of those children.”

After two years, Dunleavy became head teacher at Devonport Kindergarten. This was followed by five years as head teacher at Milford Kindergarten, which had an early intervention unit attached to it.

The experience of teaching special needs children, and Milford’s committed and empathetic parent community, inspired Dunleavy to go back to university in 1988 and complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Early Intervention.

Three years in an advisory support and management role for teachers across Auckland followed. Dunleavy was responsible for 20 kindergartens in the city and 10 on the Shore.

September 19 2014 Around that time, Dunleavy met her future husband, Paul Howard. “It was a blind date, set up by one of my Milford friends,” she says. Howard was, and is still, a teacher at Belmont Intermediate School.

Before they got married in 1990, they bought a section in Cheltenham and built a house. “We had decided it was where we wanted to bring up our children. A friend of ours designed the house; another friend was the builder, and we did quite a bit ourselves too,” Dunleavy says, showing a a scar on her arm from tying steel.

Their first child was born in 1994 and Dunleavy started working at the crèche, which was then located at the foot of Mt Victoria in what is now the Kerr Street Artspace.

Dunleavy continued to be involved in advisory work, introducing New Zealand’s then new early-childhood curriculum (Te Whariki). She also helped out at harvest time on the family’s Waiheke vineyard.

Daughter Millie was born in 1999, sibling to older brother Johnny. “The crèche became our family’s home away from home. The kids both grew up here and it’s the extension of Paul’s backyard. He is always getting the trailer to pick up something or moves the rabbit hutch,” Dunleavy says.

She reveals that she somewhat reluctantly became the crèche manager. “I had worked out that teaching is my real passion but we needed someone to lead this place and so I decided to put all my eggs in that basket.

Since then, I learned to read profit-and-loss statements, analyse budgets, fix toilets and bake faster,” But Dunleavy kept teaching even as the manager’s role grew. She won’t say how many hours she works, only that long hours are her choice and work well for her.

In 2008, the crèche parents showed their appreciation for Dunleavy’s commitment and nominated her for the New Zealand Excellence in Teaching Award. She won the regional category and was asked to present a paper in Parliament to a panel of judges. “It was mind-blowing but I felt I had the whole crèche community behind me and I thought, ‘I can do this because they believe in me,’ and so I did,” she says.

Her paper talked about how to support parents to empower children. “If you put the child on the top and the parents and community behind them, you have to support the parents. It does take a village to raise a child.”

Dunleavy is the eighth of eleven children and credits her Catholic parents for her teaching skills. “I got those attributes from them.

My mother Margaret, once a kindergarten teacher herself, taught me perseverance, how to nurture, empathise and create. People called her an angel. She had eleven children in 20 years without any twins and yet was the one baking if a neighbour was sick.

“I didn’t get to go to kindergarten as a child. Our house was a kindergarten. We had a big house in Napier, with walnut trees around it, and it was always busy,” she says.

School art gets a public showing at a gallery

Top-notch student art that was previouly only enjoyed from within Takapuna Grammar School gets a public outing at a gallery this year.

Works on Paper opens in two rooms at the Depot Artspace on Saturday 20 September, to celebrate the school’s photography, design, drawings and paintings.

Takapuna Grammar School (TGS) art prefect and Head Girl Maya Wyatt says the school wanted to share its visual arts talent with the community in an awards ceremony.

“Our school has a real strength in art and for the students this will be a first professional opportunity to present their work,” she says.

All of the art on display will be part of the students’ Level 3 NZQA assessment a month later and will determine their final grade in that subject.

Party vote outcome main Devonport election interest

Members of Devonport’s chattering classes, chardonnay socialists and green-leaning decile-10 school board members have always seemed shocked by how true blue the area is.

Surely National’s North Shore seat vote is skewed by the Milford and Takapuna booths.

The facts tell a different story.

In the 10 Devonport peninsula booths, National has been increasing its majority in the area over the last five elections, with it peaking at 5,462 under Wayne Mapp in 2008 and dropping slightly to 5,217 with Maggie Barry’s election in 2011.

There is some talk around the traps that Barry hasn’t done enough for the area and in Devonport did not take up the cudgels for residents in the Treaty sell-off of a portion of the Tamaki land and sale of reclaimed land to Bayswater Marina Holdings. Whether this translates into votes is another matter.

Wayne Mapp was put through the wringer locally in 1998/99 for the Government’s plans to free up the Tamaki land block for sale. But he actually increased his vote in Devonport in the 1999 election.

With a significant fall in Barry’s majority unlikely, the main interest in Devonport is in the party vote and its breakdown. The Greens have been making large percentage increases in Devonport and the party will be looking for this to continue. It was around 200 short of Labour last election.

Overall the trend in Devonport seems to

On the key local issue of Lake Rd traffic congestion locally, she said she had been lobbying hard at government and local government level for a solution.

It’s a populist topic, but government is a populist business, and I’d pick if she can broker a positive outcome for Lake Rd, locals will quickly forget the finer points of the Tamaki land and Bayswater marina sales.

Clarinet and string quartet charm Harmony Hall audience The Malvern String Quartet and Kenny Keppel presented a charming programme of chamber music on September 7 at Harmony Hall, Devonport. The performance replaced the usual Devonport Chamber Orchestra concert. The Malvern Quartet was formed in 2009 by four women (Sonya Aboltins, Deirdre Neilsen, Robyn Strange and Dora Green) who play mostly for their own enjoyment. We were privileged to hear them in a glowing performance of Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet with Kenny Keppel on clarinet.

Keppel is a talented musician completing a performance degree at the University of Auckland. The warm tones of the clarinet blended with the strings and all shared the beautiful melodies of one of the treasures of the chamber music repertoire. Mozart wrote the quintet in 1789 at a time of financial stress. Many of his greatest works seem to have been written in heartbreaking situations and only with hindsight can one hear the poignancy showing through. The beauty and joy of his music seems to over-ride the tragedy and worry.

The group established very pleasing tempi – bright and lively but never rushed.

The opening allegro established the sense of ensemble with beautiful phrasing and the tossing of themes from one instrument to another. Each instrument was allowed to shine and Keppel brought out the haunting quality of the clarinet. The strings coped magnificently with the special challenges imposed on them to play or replicate themes more easily presented on the clarinet. The second movement – the larghetto – is largely given over to the clarinet with the muted strings accompaniment played most sensitively.

The menuetto was full of good humour, confident playing and polished phrasing.

The clarinet was at its most playful in this movement. The finale – a theme and variations movement – saw all the instruments

Keppel performed Wireless for Solo Clarinet by Aucklander Peter Scholes. The piece explored all the timbre of the instrument and sound possibilities from all parts of its register. Keppel’s breath control was amazing and he seemed to use a circular breathing technique to maintain continuity of sound. He demonstrated outstanding ability and one hopes his plans for more advanced study in Australia can be realised.

The final work was Alexander Glazunov’s Reverie Orientale. The clarinet opened the piece followed by muted strings. The string sound was ethereal and the themes were rather reminiscent of an eastern bazaar.

The controlled string playing allowed the clarinet to shine through. This was a work unfamiliar to many, I’m sure, but worthy of more frequent performances.

A thoroughly rewarding programme, which was warmly received. Congratulations to the Malvern Quartet and Kenny Keppel.

Golf croquet comes to life at Narrow Neck

A near miss…Garth Cumberland, a new member of the North Shore Croquet Club, feels the pain The North Shore Croquet Club held its first Auckland Open Golf Croquet Tournament this month. Flagstaff reporter Maire Vieth was there with her camera.

In a showdown on the Devonport greens, some 50 people from across Auckland battled it out in mixed teams.

North Shore player Margaret McLaughlin and her team placed second in the event. The winning team included members from Warkworth and Orewa.

Club president Charlotte Millar said: “Golf croquet is great. It’s more social, shorter and easier to learn, plus you have less waiting time.” Club member Alf Dickinson said the lawns were in good condition. “They are not too bad, the best they’ve been for ages.

We have put a lot of work into them too, mowing them and clearing things off and the drainage is working well,” he said.

The club’s wooden perimeter fence was damaged during the storm in 2012 and still hasn’t been replaced. “At first it was mainly because of the cost but then we found that we actually like it better without the fence anyway and so do the neighbours. They used to wonder what we did behind the prison walls, now they know how much fun we are having,” Millar says.

The club is open most days throughout the year. Millar says: “We play all winter if we can.”

• On October 21, the club will restart its popular Twilight Croquet at 6 pm on every second Tuesday of the month. A barbecue usually follows the play. On November 23, it will host a free family-fun day.

Memorial Drive gateway officially opened

A vandal-resistant poppy is being made for the entrance to Memorial Drive in Devonport after the current model was deliberately damaged just weeks before the new entrance walls were officially opened.

The Memorial Drive project began as a joint initiative between the Devonport RSA and Devonport Borough Council with 38 trees planted by schoolchildren in 1952 to remember local soldiers who died in World War 2 (WW2).

The walls at the entrance to the drive, the latest addition to the project, were officially opened on 3 September 2014, on the 75th anniversary of the start of WW2 in 1939.

Devonport RSA president Chris Mullane said for many years the Memorial Drive entrance was marked by two hand-painted signs. In 2006 the RSA approached the then North Shore City Council with a proposal to replace them with stone walls, and the joint project resulted.

Mullane said much red tape surrounded the project over its eight years from start to finish. So it was only fitting that red tape held some of the vandalised poppy together for the opening until it is replaced “with a more vandal-proof one.”

Devonport-Takapuna Local Board chair Mike Cohen said the memorial was unique in Australasia and was about “real people who give their lives.” The memorial was so their families and the wider community never forgot their sacrifice, Cohen said

Fit for the task Tom Ingram, one of the partners in Executive Health Limited, has been a valuable part of the school’s 2014 1st XI Girls’ Hockey Team, as their fitness coach.

Being a qualified personal trainer and having played competitive sport most of his life, Tom has brought focus and passion to the team’s fitness sessions.

The players have gone from strength to strength increasing in fitness levels, speed and continuity of play, whilst following his carefully planned programme. “It really makes a difference having a fit team, so it was awesome to have someone who could be there encouraging and supporting us,” says team captain Tamara Bullock.

Ellie Saxby reflects on her trip to Japan It’s hard to summarise a trip that I enjoyed so much, I never knew that Japan would feel like a home to me the way it did. The people were incredibly kind and generous and I always felt more than welcome wherever I went. It was a little scary going into a country where I didn’t know the native language and had no one with me.

Mejiro Kenchin High School was the school I attended while in Tokyo. I had forgotten what it felt like to be the new kid at school; it was somewhat daunting. All the students and teachers were so kind that I quickly forgot any of the worries. The school was a lot smaller than TGS, both in size and population.

What I really loved most was the city; Tokyo is such a large hub thriving with culture and intrigue - every corner was something new and exciting. The three districts I enjoyed the most were Akihabara, Harajuku and Shibuya. Akihabara is basically a big electronics store and Harajuku is one of the many fashion hubs in Tokyo. out of all three, Harajuku was by far the most exciting.

Staying with a different family was something that I’ve never done before so I didn’t

quite know what to expect. There isn’t that much space in Tokyo to build a house so they have large apartment complexes. Living in an apartment was a different experience. My host family were really cool and took me out to Disney World, Hakone and a traditional Japanese bathhouse.

I don’t quite know how to explain it, no words in English could do it justice, but the food was incredible. I don’t have enough space to continue talking about Japan in depth; a simple article can’t prepare you for how wonderful the country is. My only advice is to go see it for yourself.

Last term saw our school’s dance sensations take the stage at the Bruce Mason Centre in Takapuna.

The annual Dance Evening returned bigger than ever.

Every style from Bollywood, Scottish, Hip Hop and Contemporary was showcased to a packed auditorium.

Students from all years showed off their NCEA assessment pieces and wowed the audience with huge variety and polished steps. The main dance company Cactus had many memorable dances, showing off the talent of the high-level dancers, but the crowd favourites were the Special Education Unit students who had not one but two dances during the evening, getting the crowd out of their seats and clapping along.

Ex-pupil and former Head Boy, Andrew Coshan, made an appearance late in the programme with a creative and thrilling tap performance, where he mashed all kinds of current and former hits, enthralling the audience.

Countless hours and practices were put in to make the night go smoothly and it certainly paid off. Every student involved was rewarded by a roaring crowd at their curtain call. By LUCy JACoBS

They carried stretchers with people simulating injury; they performed vertical hangs on playground climbing frames for minutes on end, pretending they were clutching helicopter skids; and they ran kilometres with their backpacks imagining that lunch and homework were paramedic equipment.

The “Chopper Challenge” was part of a school fundraising effort for Westpac Rescue Helicopter, which raised more than $11,000. Bayswater Schoolprincipal Lindsay Child said as a reward the five top fundraising students and the five who tried the hardest will get a ride in the Westpac helicopter later this term.
