Sweeping changes are expected at Devonport’s waste transfer station next year, when it will become one of the first five best-practice models for Auckland Council. A start-up budget of $1 million includes a site assessment by an engineering company

and an expected overhaul of the centre’s layout. Julie Dickinson, Senior Waste Planning Advisor, said: “We will be looking at the whole function of the site, which at the moment is very rudimentary, has contamination issues, and will possibly require new sheds or port-

able buildings.” Operation of the centre will be tendered out locally, both to the private sector and the community. After three to six years, the centre is expected to break even or make a small profit
