A car was used as a battering ram in a smashand-grab raid at dairy alongside children’s bedrooms.

Ten-year-old Arpita Patel was awoken by the sound of a car crashing through the front door of her family’s Merani Street Dairy. Four men driving two stolen cars backed one car into the front door smashing the glass and surrounding brick wall. They stole the till and $400 before

escaping in the second car. After a police chase through Devonport they were arrested.

Arpita and her older sister Paayal (14) were fast asleep at 11:45 pm last Saturday night when the offenders struck. The sisters’ bedroom and the family’s adjoining lounge are right next to the shop front. The bedroom of their parents Yogita and Matt Patel is further back in the house.

Matt says: “Arpita was the first to wake us.

She was very frightened.” Matt and Yogita slept right through the noise, he says. “The door to our bedroom was closed and the heatpump on, so we didn’t hear it.”

“I was tired. I had played soccer with some local friends in the afternoon, then worked in the dairy until 9 pm and went to bed at 11 pm,” he said.

Matthew wins under-15 title

First steps to reseed cockles on Cheltenham Beach

Searching for shellfish… Charlie Glass organised this year’s shellfish survey of Cheltenham beach, alongside Georgina Greville of the Cheltenham Beach Caretakers, who checked for cockle regularly until 2010 A bid to get cockles back on Cheltenham Beach began last Sunday with a survey of the shellfish numbers organised by primary school student Charlie Glass.

Charlie, 11, who is in Year six at Vauxhall School, asked the community to help and more than 100 people scattered along the beach with spades, buckets and measuring equipment.

Survey results were being collated as the Flagstaff went to press.

“Cheltenham Beach used to have literally millions of cockles and other shellfish. People used to harvest them by the trailer load and the population started to fall, “ Charlie wrote in a flyer about the event.

“Our aim is to see if it would be possible to reseed the cockle population at Cheltenham

Beach. This would be excellent for the environment, especially for shorebirds and fish,” he said In 1993 a ban (rahui) was placed on taking shellfish from the beach, but the remaining population continued to fall.

Cheltenham Beach Caretakers surveyed the beach regularly but at the last survey in 2010 they found only 12 cockles on the beach.

Charlie’s father Paul said once the latest survey was done “the hard work will begin – getting through the bureaucracy to actually get the seeding process approved.”

Georgina Greville, spokesperson for the Cheltenham Beach Caretakers group, was delighted with Charlie’s initiative.

“It’s fantastic a young lad has taken it up,” she said.

Queens Parade part of project finished The footpath on Queens Parade has been finally completed this month – a relief to shop keepers who were told at the start of the year it would only take seven weeks to rebuild.

The Queen’s Parade section of Auckland Transport’s Marine Square upgrade is now substantially complete.

The road has reopened to two-way traffic and pedestrians have full use of the footpaths, which have new kerbing, lighting and a fresh layer of asphalt.

All P60 car parking has been reinstated along the shop side of the road with P180 parking now available on the opposite side.

Paving around the Esplanade is finished except for some sealing and grouting and attractive stone paving now adorns the hotel’s front entrance.

Gorse bush and locals rescue woman after cliff fall A 29-year-old woman was rescued by an army of helpers after falling five metres down the cliff above St Leonard’s beach last Friday at around 5 pm. Firefighters, police and Westpac helicopter staff, as well as half a dozen local residents, all pulled the woman to safety.

“We got her,” said a relieved John Ellington, Station Manager of the Devonport Fire Service, at the scene. Police said the woman had slipped while out walking. She managed to hold on to a gorse bush and called out for help. A member of the public heard her and called the police at 4.45 pm. Officers were at the scene seven minutes later, said Paula Enoka, District Shift Commander at North Shore Police.

The woman seemed to be unharmed by the event, but was checked by St John’s Ambulance officers.

Boys put TGS on cycling map

The Takapuna Grammar School (TGS) boys road cycling team has placed second at the New Zealand champs held recently in Palmerston North.

TGS were just piped by Palmerston North Boys for the title, but beat traditionally strong cycling schools Saint Kentigern College and Auckland Grammar.

The team returned from the New Zealand National Schools Road Cycling Championships with six medals and a national record.

A gold medal went to the school’s top junior time trial team, which set a new record of 23:21 on the hilly 16 km course. Team members were Oscar Elworthy, Jacob Kench, Harry Waine and Adam McPheat.

Last week, Bike NZ selected Oscar Elworthy, Jacob Kench and Harry Waine in the five-strong New Zealand Under-17 team.

The road race at the national champs was cancelled due to strong winds, but the points race on day three brought more success for TGS. Harry Waine won the Under-16 boys race and team mate Jacob Kench came third. Jacob’s younger brother Joshua came second in the Under-14 boys race.

Harry Elworthy won bronze in the Under-19 boys points race, outsprinting two track world champions Luke Mudgway and Regan Gough.

Adam McPheat won bronze in the Under-15 boys.

Top ten placings went to: Ellie Cowan, who came 9th in the Under-20 girls points race; Katherine Badham, who came 6th in the Under-17 girls points race; Oscar Elworthy, who came 6th in the Under-16 boys points race, Renee Young, who was 6th in the Under-14 girls points race; and Nick Little, who was 8th in the Under-14 boys points race.

Peter Cowan, one of the school’s 15 parent coaches, says there is real momentum in the cycling programme.

“Success breeds success. And our team ethos helps. Our older riders support the younger ones

We regularly get comments from other schools about how much we cheer for each other at start and finish lines and prizegiving,” he says.

As an example Cowan points to a good first cycling year for Year 9 Harry Lochhead. Harry first sat on a road bike in February and just raced in the Under-14 age group in Palmerston North, finishing in the middle of the field.

“Little fellas like Harry train with the big fellas all year, go to camp and events together.

They can see that if they work hard they can be like them,” Cowan says.

Year 13 student and TGS Cycling boys team captain Tom Calver says students love the inclusiveness. He started cycling in Year 9, the only year he ever medalled, but he has stuck to cycling for fitness and camaraderie. “We do a

lot of hard work training but most of all we all support each other. Everyone who does cycling supports everyone else who does cycling. I think it is quite unlike every other sport,” he says.

Parent coach Dean Sykes says that the goal has been to accommodate a wide range of abilities and ages.

But it’s not all rosy. The school needs more girls on bikes, which would make them more competitve as a group. Recruiting more girls is a work in progress at TGS. Sharon Davies, Sports Director, says it’s about barriers. “There are a few that we still need to cross and that are mostly related to looks. The girls have to realise they don’t have to look their best and that cycling is really good for them. It would be the ultimate achievement, if TGS could compete with the top girls schools out there,” she says.

The dairy’s CCTV footage shows the building’s exterior wall buckle at 11.45 pm.

The impact pushes a freezer further into the shop. A hooded, gloved man jumps onto the freezer and then the counter. He grabs the till and a second man helps him rip it off its Eftpos cable. The robbery is over within a matter of seconds.

Toni Gregory, a Merani Street neighbour, happened to be driving past as the raid happened.

“I was coming home and drove up Old Lake Road from Narrow Neck beach when I saw a white Alteeza leap into the dairy. I thought someone must have had a heart attack, so I pulled over. Then I saw the car move forward and smash right back into the dairy for a second time,” she says.

Gregory knew something was wrong and reacted quickly. “I locked my car from the inside, put my hand on the horn and called the police,” she said.

“Then I saw a young male with a balaclava on tearing out of the dairy and leaping into another car that shot off at a huge speed. I got the first three letters of its licence plate,” she says. That car was a black or dark navy station wagon.

Both cars are understood to have been stolen.

By then Matt Patel was out on the street as well. He too thought an accident had happened.

“I was going to check if there was an injured driver inside the car,” he says.

The Patels have owned the dairy since 2001 and have always felt safe there. “It is why

Tree workers acting suspiciously

Here’s something for your crime section to alert the good folks of Bayswater and Devonport that the tree criminals are about again.

I was at home in Bayswater enjoying the live test match between the All Blacks and the Pumas when there was a knock on the door.

I said to myself, “Self. Who would be knocking on my front door during a test match?”

Is it a couple of young men in their early 20s wearing white shirts and brown ties who will try to persuade me to mend my ways and follow the wisdom of a convicted 19th century American conman, despite the fact that their youth and lack of worldly experience suggest they don’t know much yet?

Or is it a different type of fanatic, who will attempt to persuade me that I may be able to join the 144,000 anointed people who will ascend to heaven after the rapture while the rest of humanity writhes in eternal agony?” Nope.

It was a man in his 40s, curly dark hair, stocky build wearing scruffy blue overalls and a yellow

high-vis vest sloppily unfastened at the front. He asked ( predictably) if I wanted any tree work doing around the property, to which I replied no.

As he left I couldn’t help noticing him look up at the security camera on the front of my garage.

So I helped him understand by explaining,“ Yes, they are security cameras and you are being filmed right now.” I stood and watched him all the way to the end of our long driveway and sure enough he turned around and looked back just as he reached the road. I didn’t wave but I felt like we had a moment.

Then I went inside and phoned *555 because these guys piss me off. The woman at the police cmmomms centre was very nice and she was well aware of the ‘tree fellas’ scammers who case out the property of any unsuspecting person foolish enough to show them around. To return and burgle them later of course. Anyway the test match was safe by that stage. And it did all happen during the half -time break.

Soft drinks canned at fun run Canned soft drinks have been dropped from this season’s JETS fun run, which recommences on October 15 at 6 pm.The race will this year supply a range of free post-race electrolyte drinks instead, said race director Paul Cornish.

One parent summed up the reason for the change since last season “please remove soft

drinks… it contradicts the wellness message of doing runs.”

Food and wine should have evolved into a Main street event That’s not to say those who put so much effort into the event over the years haven’t done an excellent job as I take my hat off to their dedication to fight the fight.

Regardless of the cause, the people always turned up but it changed from a loved local event to another Auckland City Circus.

The only likelihood of it succeeding and having a future was for it to grow outwardly and not create what happened which made it into an elitist enclave.

Should the marketing have been done around how it could always exist and take place then the option of a main street Mardi Gras concept could have ensured the business district would benefit as well as the charities.

Here is a case where the business association and council should have looked at how Devonport as a whole could make such an event worthy of existence.

What’s of constant amazement about success or failure in our world today is the total ignorance to doing some form of marketing as to whether there is a place for a product or an event.

A case in point is our Devonport wine and food festival that your correspondent Ron Dykman fires shots in all directions on the hows and whys of its failure but misses the real mark.

It started as a charity event to raise funds in support of nominated subjects, something it did very well for many years.

Having been an avid supporter from its early days, I gave up on it when the reason for being seemed to have evaporated into a must-have event in the course of every year.

When you weren’t allowed to take in a freshly purchased bottle of water through the gates and your backpack got the once over, and everyone was treated as a suspect till proven innocent, many, like me would give it a wide berth from then on.

Wild at woolly I note Helene Dehmer’s plan to create a Woolly Tree (Flagstaff, October 3) The existing Woolly Poles are enough of a disgrace, the worst kind of pointless craft. The desecration of a Pohutukawa tree with more of this jolly tangle, destined to become sodden with rain and dog urine, is appalling. I had often thought of complaining about the verandah poles in Victoria Road, but felt that surely, they would be removed soon … but to hear more of this is being planned to be installed is too much.

This has nothing to do with an Arts Festival.

At best, there is something very broken in our government. Either way, it needs to be investigated and fixed.

What is the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board doing about it?

This is evident in the action proposed by council, namely to “Investigate the current provision of arts and role and culture facilities in Devonport, Takapuna and Northern Metro area to identify if current provision is meeting community need” as part of a ‘’cluster investigation’’ (P47). The paper details the composition of arts centres’ visitors and alludes to the changing population and the people these centres no longer serve.

Incidentally, the research on which these claims are based is woefully inadequate, taking into account only the most visible services that centres offer.

We express concern over this plan because it is just one of five to which the Depot has submitted and which collectively undermine the self-determination and distinctiveness of communities.

Sailing into the senior ranks

Shooting the breeze… Markus Somerville

At the conclusion of a stellar junior yachting career Markus Somerville talks to Maire Vieth as he navigates his way into the senior ranks, develops a fashion line and looks ahead to the Tokyo Olympics.

Markus Somerville started sailing at age 11.

Six years later, and nearly 18, he has an impressive list of national and international achievements to his name. He is currently ranked second junior in the world in the 29er class.

Markus still retains the glow of youth and success. In July, he won the bronze medal at the ISAF Youth Worlds in Portugal, helming

a 29er with Hamilton crew Isaac McHardie.

Earlier, the two also won gold at the RYA British Youth National Championships in Weymouth, England and at the New Zealand 29er Nationals. In July Devonport’s Wakatere Boating Club awarded Markus the cup for the year’s Most Meritorious Junior Sailor.

He had started out sailing the skiff only the previous season with Devonport crew Jack Simpson, who is a year older than Markus and left the youth class a year ago. The two made their mark just two weeks after they started training together in the 29er, coming second in the 2012 29er National Championships held in Auckland.

“Jack and I never looked back. We just leaped forward,” says Markus. They took on the world four months later, placing 5th at Queensland Youth Week, 13th at the 29er European Championships in Poland and 37th out of 220 at the 29er World Championships in Travemünde, Germany. Gold in Auckland, Sydney, Melbourne and Scotland followed, then bronze at the 2013 ISAF Youth World Championships in Cyprus and Silver at the 29er Class World Championships in Arhus, Denmark. “We were stoked,” says Markus.

Looking ahead to this summer Markus is looking for a new boat and crew mate. He has his eyes cast on the 49er skiff and the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. It is a fast boat that demands quick thinking and reactions, Markus says. “You never sit down or even crouch. You

pretty much always fully trapeze on the wire, so you are lying dead flat and the boat flies.

And downwind, they have gennakers and just go so fast and speed always was my dream.”

“I have just taken four potential partners out sailing, just blasting around to see how good a match we are,” he says.

The choice comes down to weight and fit.

Markus weighs 60 kg – light for the 49er, which has an ideal combined weight for helm and crew of 155 kg. “So I am looking for a big gun to jump on as crew,” he says. He also plans to gain weight himself, at the gym and with the help of a nutritionist.

A good mate comes not only with the right weight but also the right temperament. “For me, the perfect sailing partner is someone I can communicate well with, so I can really help teach them and I can understand them and we will get along for the six years it takes until Tokyo, which is a long time,” he says.

Like many young Devonport sailors, Markus started out in the flat-bottomed Optimist dinghy at Narrow Neck Beach. “We called it the bathtub,” he says. For five years it was mostly plain sailing in the bathtub for him. Markus regularly won or medalled at New Zealand regattas. In his last year, 2011, he also competed in the Dominican Republic, Texas, and Wales, where he came 6th, 4th and 3rd respectively.

October 17 2014 Sweden to build a boat for a Volvo Whitbread boat, and finally to Oxnard, California, to help build boats for Oracle’s first and second America’s Cup entry.

The family, including twin sister Rikki and mum Kimberley Parkinson came along.

Markus’s first memories are of the Swedish winter. “I was about four and I remember skiing in the snow in our backyard and ice skating on a big iced-over lake,” he says. He loved living in the US. “The first time I was going to school in Camarillo, California and I just remember it being scorching hot and having an American accent,” he says.

Two years in Washington State followed.

“It was amazing. We lived in Anacortes, just north of Seattle. I played state soccer, we had an amazing house. I had amazing friends and I went to an amazing school.”

Back then, it was the longest Markus had lived in the same place. But in 2011 the Somervilles returned to New Zealand and Markus’s parents separated. Mark now lives in Italy and is building boats near Milan. Kimberley and the twins have settled in Devonport.

The Somerville family has strong local roots.

Four generations have attended Takapuna Grammar School. Markus’s great grandfather Robert Turner was a founding pupil at Vauxhall School in 1920, then located in the army buildings across Vauxhall Road. Sailing, however, wasn’t a family tradition and started only with Mark.

On the Parkinson side, there was radio.

Kimberley is the daughter of Radio Hauraki founding member Chris Parkinson, who later became radio managing and operations director, a TV news presenter, and won the Pater Award as best Voice of Australasia for his voiceover work.

Sailing isn’t the only thing on Markus’s mind, as he is finishing at school. He is also attracted to radio and is considering a communications degree at Auckland University of Technology. “Apparently I am not too bad at talking to people, so I was hoping I might branch out into that a little too maybe,” he says.

I was ranked the best in New Zealand and was supposed to win. But my first day was a massive shambles. In the first race, I went over the line too early, jumped the gun, and was given last place.

“In the second race I was worried about doing that again, had a terrible start and came 18th. At the end of day one I was 160th so I had quite a lot on,” he says.

Over the next twelve races, Markus fought his way back and came third. He credits this comeback to his coach, Briar Dye Hutchinson.

“She basically taught me how to calm myself down right then and there,” he says.

Jumping into a two-person boat the following season also helped. “I found that with a sailing partner you can share the load and I have not ever been that stressed again with any of my partners,” he says.

But learning to effectively communicate took time. “Jack and I were both really good tactical sailors but when you are on a boat together for a whole day, every day, for a year, you have to take it to another level,” he says The two boys had different personalities. “I am more of an extrovert than Jack and pretty chatty. Jack’s dad said we had to learn how to ‘Bluetooth,’ give as much information as you can. I learned to process the wind, the waves, the sail trim, how the boat is feeling and let him know the fastest and easiest possible way.

It took us about a year to get good but then it really worked,” Markus says.

Ironically, Markus says all the talking ended up quietening him down. “I have to say, I used to be a little too outgoing sometimes, but after two years on the 29er I have calmed down a lot and it has helped me broadening my circle of friends and also at school,” he says.

His childhood had already broadened his outlook. When he was two, his boatbuilder father Mark Somerville went to Valencia in 1998 to help build the Spanish 2000 America’s Cup boat, then moved on to Saltsjöbaden,

Passionate about music, especially rap, he says DJing is something he is also keen to explore.

But his new hobby is fashion. “I used to be a kid who just wore whatever he was given and never had a lot. I only loved my shoes and bought them five sizes too big so I would have them for years.

“In the last year or so I have really gotten into fashion though. Now I want to wear my own clothing and something that represents me.

Put my feelings on a shirt basically,” he says.

Markus and two long-time soccer buddies, Reece Matuschka and Sean Lamont-Bennett, have just designed their Flagstaff t-shirt (inspired by the first name for Devonport).

Their label is Voksalcast, a creative spelling of Markus and Reece’s (as well as Markus’s great grandfather’s ) primary school.

The three design collaboratively. “We have put our design input together and came up with a great logo. We are getting plain shirts and are printing our designs on them. Once we make enough money from that, we are keen to go further, make our own cuts and things,” he says.

The trio’s inspiration is the label Sly Guild, founded five years ago by three North Shore brothers who started out making T-shirts for mates and now have a flagship store in Takapuna and were part of the 2014 New Zealand Fashion Week.

For now, Markus is looking forward to the summer. He already has one summer job.

“Last year, I helped coach a New Zealand and an Asian Opti team. They must have liked me because a couple of months ago they asked me to be head coach of the 2014 New Zealand Optimist Development Team.

“So at the end of the year, I will take ten kids from the age of nine to twelve, and their parents, to New Caledonia to sail,” he says.

Markus also wants to do a superyacht course to head on a kind of sailing OE. “I could finally visit my dad, maybe sail in the Greek islands around Mykonos and Santorini. Tokyo is still six years away and I don’t want to rush into it and not enjoy the world,” he says.

Concerns remain over Bayswater ‘fiasco’

Reading the utterances of Wayne Mapp and Bayswater marina reminded me of the movie Shadows of Liberty. Do download it if you can.

These politicians like Ms Barry resort to suggesting she would get her legal team onto me for asking questions; a threat. Questions remain unanswered entirely so, All we want is transparency. Wayne Mapp trivialises the facts and aligns the Ports of Auckland’s outrageous landfill and harbour silting operations and talks of the Viaduct reclaims; neither have any bearing on the price of Bayswater or who canvassed to allow the outrageous event to be made legal. There are plenty of leasehold lands in Auckland, and the notion that reclaims need to be freehold is a nonsense at best.

A title sold for a song to the person that reclaimed the sea, it is a joke. I’ve asked Maggie Barry under the Official Information Act for all her emails and communications and all others involved in

the Bayswater fiasco. Total transparency. Mapp ignores the Environment Courts. In my view he belongs to a culture that believes the courts should abide the government of the day as they please.

This illegal slipping through consultation with iwi, and quietly changing the legislation, and quickly valuing the title cheaply using LINZ, and disposing of it quickly, then running a promo evening using Maggie Barry pushing council towards concepts of special housing areas, is a joke at best. I call for the revoking of the title and an investigation made into the entire matter. Wayne and Maggie should desist from threatening and answer the questions. Refuge removed suddenly

Inexplicably, a pedestrian refuge located on Lake Road at the junction of Seabreeze Road has been removed. I frequently use this crossing point myself and often during the day notice mothers with prams, dog walkers, cyclists, joggers, kids on bikes and skateboarders standing one or other side of the busy road waiting for a gap in the sometimes near continuous streams of two-way traffic.

Why was this decision made? Was it based on any survey or public consultation? The dangerous situation now requires pedestrians who wish to use the pavement side of Lake Road or to go down Seabreeze Road to dash across on the rare occasions an opportunity presents.

Library out of keeping?

So the roof is going on the new library.

Am I alone in feeling that it looks like a bigger building then we all expected? An $8 million testament to council largesse despoiling a park.

Its a done deal now but what an opportunity cost. We had a functioning library (albeit in need of some repair) but we could have had a swimming pool, and completed the ferry wharf for that price. Devonport still lacks a function centre to hold events of any size.

Council doublespeak says the money for the various projects around Devonport comes from different departments. But in the end we are paying and paying. Its borrowed cash - a debt our children will be lumbered with through ever increasing rates. Mary Taylor

Bassoon in Triplicate truly magical The Devonport Chamber Orchestra performed three 18th century masterpieces in Harmony Hall on October 5 to an almost capacity crowd. The orchestra was ably led by David Choi and conducted by Ben Hoadley, who was also one of the three bassoon soloists in two concerti.

The concert opened with Symphony No 7, Le Midi (Midday) by Joseph Haydn (1732-1809).

wrote based on times of the day. The first movement opened with a slowish ceremonial march that led into a brisk allegro. Solos were passed around to all sections of the orchestra – notable performances from violins, oboes and cello. The third movement – a Menuetto and Trio – included a very attractive solo played on cello with double bass.

A beautifully executed flute solo, with clean and well phrased string playing in the finale, brought the symphony to a close.

Dilys Fong was the bassoon soloist in Concerto in G Major for Bassoon and Orchestra (RV 492) by Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741). The rapid and florid runs in all string parts of the opening tutti, set the movement off to a fine start. Fong, although pursuing a singing career is an accomplished bassoonist and seemed to enjoy the challenges of the intricate writing. The sensitively played cello continuo supported and enhanced the solo lines. The slow movement was a rich tapestry of solo and string accompaniment and the last movement showed up the soloist’s skill in the florid passage work.

The Concerto in F major for Two Bassoons and Orchestra by Johann Baptist Vanhal (1739-1813) is rarely played and provided a host of moments of good humour. Ben Hoadley and Carol Wang were the two soloists. Wang is well on the way to becoming a professional bassoon player and Hoadley is an internationally trained bassoonist who performs internationally as a soloist and teacher. Their rapport was evident in the way they shared the solo lines and tossed themes from one to the other like players in a tennis volley. Apart from conducting the opening of the first movement, Hoadley left the orchestra very much to perform without a conductor. David Choi was fully up to the task of maintaining momentum. Most thematic music was in the solo lines and so well were they matched it was difficult to tell when one soloist handed over to the other.

A really enjoyable concert and it was received with lengthy applause. The last concert on the Devonport Chamber Orchestra’s calendar for 2014 is their combined concert with the Auckland Welsh Choir on 16 November in Holy Trinity Church, Devonport at 2.00pm. A Devonport woman is restocking school libraries in Papua New Guinea with books she is gathering from the peninsla.

Jose Stern started sending books to PNG after visiting her husband at Port Moresby where he works.

“My initial involvement came when I attended the PNG Women’s Awards ceremony at Parliament in October 2012 and one of the recipients was running an unofficial school on tiny Baudisson Island (New Ireland province) where her Australian husband owned a plantation.

“Most of the chidlren didn’t go to the government school on a neighbouring island as they couldn’t get there and could not afford the uniform.

“When I asked her what her biggest need was, she said books and stationary,” Stern said.

Over time she took three boxes to Port Moresby and asked the awards’ sponsor to ship them to the closest town, Kavieng.

“I was actually on the lookout for another needy school when my son Byron brought a Papua New Guinean army colleague, Joe, home to Devonport on leave and he told me the story of what happened to his school up in the Highlands in Simbu Province.”

The founder of the school was murdered and the school and library totally destroyed by fire during the political riots in the early 2000s.

“The school was recently rebuilt by NGOs but received no funding for books, so I made that my project.”

She has more than two cubic metres of books (approx 50 banana boxes) in storage in an airport warehouse belonging to SDV - a French logisitics company who have offered to transport the books to Port Moresby for free. “I am hoping to collect at least another cubic metre before sending this shipment off at the end of October,” she said.

“Recently I was approached by a young Papua New Guinean, Deane, from the Sepik region. He had heard through the grapevine what I was doing and asked if I could also help the school his family had helped establish in his village.

“If all goes well with the current project, primarily customs clearance and the forwarding of boxes to the remote highlands school, I will also help his school.“ Stern is collecting pre-loved, school-age books (not adult books) and stationary.

Dancing to the top of the New Zealand class

Belmont Intermediate is the best junior dance school in the country.

Its 14 ballroom dancers had a near clean sweep of awards at this year’s New Zealand Dance Sport Championships held in Auckland.

The seven couples came home with three first places, four seconds and two thirds in the samba, jive, foxtrot and cha cha, plus the cup for best intermediate school. Dancing couples could be same-sex or mixed.

First place winners were: Macey Coles and Kate Milligan in the Cha Cha and Samba and Kate Kawahara and Katherine Daniel in the Jive.

Second place winners were Harry Halls and Bethan Parker in the cha cha, Macey Coles and Kate Milligan in the foxtrot and jive, and Kennedy Scott and Jake Scott in the samba.

Ruby Worrall and Sebastian Lampen were third in the jive and samba.

All of the kids were introduced to ballroom dancing in their last year at Devonport Primary School (DPS) when preparing for their end-ofyear dinner dance.

DPS Sports Coordinator Gillian Scott said: “They have just kept at it ever since.”

Her daughter Kennedy says the BIS dancers all practice regularly at school and also have lessons after school every Monday.

Kennedy has also tried out ballet and jazz dance but says that ballroom is at the top of her list because she is not alone when doing it.

“Knowing how to dance is such a great skill and now they will have it forever, even at weddings and things like that. Especially the boys, they will be able to ask a girl to dance

and know what to do if she says yes.”

BIS also has two high achieving hip hop dancers.

At this year’s World Hip Hop Dance Championships held in Las Vegas, Evie Hancock won bronze in her age group with the Bubble Gum crew and Montana Cooper came fourth with the crew Fresh Movement.

Marine Square safety management questioned Lynn Dawson, who broke her elbow at the Marine Square construction site, has appealed to the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board to investigate the safety practices of Downer Construction, the contractor.

She said that after the Flagstaff reported her accident, people phoned or emailed her every day with difficulties troubles crossing Marine Square. “Sight impaired people tell me they can’t get to the wharf any more without another person’s help. Yesterday there was a manhole three inches from the walkway and I saw a child run under the barriers into the street,” she said.

Beatrice WOW finalist Regular World of Wearable (WOW) Art contributor Beatrice Carlson was again a finalist at the annual event. Carlson submitted an elaborate bra called “Boobie or not Boobie…That is the Question.” It featured a hand, skull and feather.

This is the fifth year Carlson entered WOW. She won the South Pacific category in 2012, was a runner up in 2010 and a finalist in 2011 and 2013.

Historic find at Marine Square excavation An historic iron carriage wheel and chain has been unearthed by contractors during excavations at Marine Square.

Auckland Council’s Heritage Unit examined the artefact and believes it appears the wheel has been recovered from a 1920s reclamation fill – based on the unit’s knowledge of the former shoreline in the vicinity of the Devonport wharf.

The wheel is cast iron and the hub appears well made. It was likely to have been imported into the country and during its life been part of a heavy duty cart or carriage. The wheel was probably in use until after World War One,

Green thumbs up for spring

Helen Smith is pleased with a pink geranium, which will go into her small Hauraki garden Geraniums, silverbeet, lemon spread and many other home-grown or home-made goodies were filling the tables at this year’s annual spring show of the Devonport Garden and Floral Art Club.

The club’s new and long-time members had been hard at work in their gardens all winter.

Avid gardener Jean Greenbrock won numerous prizes for her fresh and preserved vegetable medley of carrots, onions, potatoes, beans and capsicum and topped with parsley

They submitted vegetables, fruit and flowers to a judged competition and put together a plant sale, white elephant sale and big lunch spread.

President Alma Murray said the show raised $1,300. The overall winner was Coral Carstairs.

The club is in its 68th year. But membership is declining and now under 50, with many members in their late 80s or early 90s.

The club meets every second Monday at St Leo’s Church hall and welcomes new members.

Local children prove keen builders Habitat for Humanity partnered with Lego to bring the Habitat Build Challenge to the peninsula over the holidays. Dozens of local primary schoolchildren from the Devonport and Takapuna region turned up to a room at Takapuna Grammar in the first week of the holidays to build their best Habitat House.

Using materials that had been donated

by Lego, the children’s brief was to construct their best representation of a house that Habitat would provide for a family in need. They had an hour to complete this challenge; plenty of time for their creativity to spark some incredible ideas.

This event took place all over the country, as a part of Habitat’s Awareness Week.

The aim was to engage children in the housing issues Habitat tries to combat in their work. Young children are a social group who can be hard for Habitat to reach, as no one under the age of 16 is allowed on Habitat’s build sites. Being so young, these children often do not understand the struggle that some families in New Zealand go through to find affordable, safe housing for their entire family. A positive approach to an often difficult subject made the challenge ideal for young children. When asked why he took part in the challenge Joe Brownlie confirmed, “I just thought it would be fun to build with the Lego.”

Once built, the children’s creations are photographed and along with a sentence about their house, the pictures are uploaded to the website: buildchallenge.org, where members of the public can vote for their favourite builds. The houses with the most votes as well the judging panel’s top three houses will win prizes of Lego.

Several of the school’s IB students, including Mera Conger, Patrick Liu and Joshua Morrison, supported the challenge by lending a helping hand on the day. They saw the children put immense effort into their builds and were touched by the pride they felt once having completed them. “It breaks your heart to dismantle them,” says Mera Conger. “It’s really fun to see what the kids can do.”

Entertaining and insightful Seven extremely brave Year 11 students took to the stage to deliver speeches they had prepared earlier this year. A whole range of topics were spoken on from success to feminism, from gingers to nerds. Some speeches had people splitting at the sides, and others with more serious tones, were listened to in silence, all students deep in thought about the dangers of body image, or what is defined as feminism.

Henry Watts the reigning year eleven champion took first place yet again, delivering a speech which mixed equal parts of thoughtfulness and humour about the dangers of misinformation. He warned his audience about not believing everything you read, and making sure to check your sources to find real evidence.

He outlined that as teenagers we need to be aware of the world around us, and what is fact or fiction, in a humorous way that also held a serious undertone, while also making some hilarious remarks about recent misinformation stories.

Second place was awarded to Marijke Geerkins who delivered a catchy speech about nerds, which most definitely appealed to the masses. She spoke about

common pop culture, TV shows and books, and about the stereotyping that accompanies the word ‘nerd’, about how people are made fun of or teased for being enthusiastic about school, or things they are passionate about. Hopefully, it made quite a few students think about the next time they open their mouths to call someone a nerd.

Third runner-up was Sol CrannaSmith with his speech about gingers, or more specifically discrimination against gingers. His speech was light-hearted

and extremely funny. He made a series of jokes about the hunting of gingers and about them being harvested for their unique hair and skin colour, along with the generic “gingers don’t have souls” jokes, which had people in stitches.

This year’s speech competition was definitely a success and thoroughly enjoyed by all those who attended. Public speaking remains a great strength of the students at the school and it holds an important place in the English curriculum.

A talented football team The endurance and hard work from 16 determined and talented female athletes placed the TGS First XI Girls Football team in third place for the Auckland Provincial Cup. This was an impressive showcase of this team’s improvement since last year.

The goal scored by Aleisha Taylor (Year 12) in a game against Rangitoto College (second in New Zealand last season) led to their 1-0 victory.

These girls took it a step further and showed off their skills and potential by securing fifth place in the NZSS Girls Football Tournament during Tournament Week. With only two losses out of seven

games, the team won 4-1 against Tauranga Girls College with goals scored by Year 11 and 13 strikers Lily Jervis and Emma Rolston respectively. This victory achieved the goal the coaches (Pete Buchanan and Morgan Owen) had set five seasons ago of placing in the top eight teams.

Although the team is what co-coach Morgan Owen claims to be “pretty lax for a first team,” she also says that: “This achievement wouldn’t have half the value if we didn’t get to share it with such an awesome group of people.” This team has players from Years 9 to 13 who all possess different strengths and qualities,

as well as players like Indi Yerman (Year 12), who has joined the team again this year after missing a whole season with a serious knee injury. Year 13 players Jasmin Krishnan, Josie Topp and Clara Garcia have played for the team since their first year at TGS, and the latter two have each played 100 games for the school.

Groundbreaking pioneers subject of local art

Joughin’s sculptures investigate the modifications and hold them up against the “purity of the original” in small metal groupings. In November, he will show seven of them at NZ Sculpture OnShore.

It’s a productive time for Joughin. Until October 23, he also has an exhibition called The Pioneers at the Depot Artspace, where groups of small ceramic houses he fired in his roomsized kiln and a number of acrylic paintings follow a similar theme. “Each of them touches on a different aspect of pioneering life in terms of housing, which represents beliefs, hierarchy and colonisation,” he says.

“I guess I am interested in the challenges of amalgamation of nature, Maori terms of believing that land has a spirit that you guard and European ideas that land is a resource and can be owned,” he says.

Joughin studied ceramics and art at the University of Otago University. “Over the years, I have built my workshop and paid off my kiln,” he says.

He strictly separates work and art. “I work for periods and make art for periods. Otherwise I find the job takes away too much energy to do it all. I have done that in landscaping and currently I drive a bus for a week and then make art for another. It works really well for me,” he says.

Whole lotto touch going on Helen Pelham’s love of touch football has been recognised with a national award.

Just as the 2014 season kicks off, the Stanley Bay School teacher and sports coordinator received the Sport Maker award from Lotto New Zealand for her commitment to youth rugby in Devonport.

Nine years ago, Sharks Sports Trust asked Pelham to bring touch to Devonport. She did and her passion for it has been unconditional.

“I have babied touch rugby on the peninsula from the beginning and have done pretty much everything on the way. I have played, coached, managed and refereed. To qualify as a national referee, I even spent two hours learning how to blow a whistle properly,” she says.

“It wasn’t easy to create the interest for a new sport, to train all the coaches and the refs, but now we have 450 kids participate every summer and it’s just a lot of fun,” Pelham says.

The structure of local youth touch rugby has changed a couple of times. First another sports trust got involved. Now the schools are running it as a fundraiser. “There is a lot of money involved in touch and it has to be looked after properly. We take in around $18,000 every year.

Ten thousand goes towards expenses. We pay our referees; have affiliation fees to regional and national bodies; buy balls, whistles, ref uniforms and prizes for all the kids. The rest is distributed between the schools in a fair way,” she says.

Last year, Pelham not only ran touch but also coached six of the 26 teams. This year she is

Touch is a family affair with the Pelhams.

Helen started playing in her 20s in East Coast Bays and still plays. “This year I played at Cox’s Bay, Silverdale and Forrest Hill,” she says.

“Touch is a great sport. It is the only one I know of where men and women, girls and boys play in the same teams. It’s fast and keeps you fit. And it’s a great social thing to do, to catch up with your friends and have a few good laughs,” she says.

Making a beeline for Waipu

Margaret and Lance McKechnie have been hand-making leather bags and men’s shirts in their Calliope Road workshop for 30 years. Now, the owners of Beeline Leather and Beeline Shirts have sold up and are moving to Waipu Cove.

It is time for a lifestyle change, they say. “The commercial and residential rates here are now so high. We work seven days a week to keep up with things and often are too busy to enjoy the good bits about Devonport,” says Lance. So when a lady knocked on the door and asked if they would consider selling the house and shop, they said yes.

Margaret says: “We are fortunate that we can take our job with us. We bought a nice house on a quarter acre, just off the main road. We won’t have a shop but will still go to the Matakana, Titirangi and Coatsville markets every month.”

Before moving to Devonport,the McKechnies owned shops in the city – on Vulcan Lane, High Street and finally at Victoria Market – but Margaret says, “in the end it got too expensive there for a niche market like ours.” Loyal customers followed them to Devonport and new ones found them too.

Lance says that as soon as local postie Jaye Stewart’s son heard they were leaving, he put in an order for a dozen jandals panicking at the thought of losing out.

The McKechnies have raised twins now

Busy as bees – Margaret and Lance McKechnie have been leaving Devonport after making bags and shirts at Beeline on Calliope Road for 30 years.

Lance grew up in Takapuna, went to Takapuna Grammar School and began a boatbuilding apprenticeship at the Naval Dockyard in 1968, aged 19. “It is there that I started making sandals with tyre soles. It was hand-made hippie stuff, a revolt against commercialism. Eventually, I got so busy that I had to make a decision of whether to be a boatbuilder or a leather maker.”

Margaret is originally from Hamilton, a self-taught sewer who started out in women’s fashion. “After I worked with a friend who taught me how to make men’s shirts. I just stuck to that,” she says.

They met at the Browns Mill Market on Durham Lane, where both were selling leather goods. In the late 1970s they moved to Cook Street Market, where they sold their wares alongside Caroline Sills and Wallis’s Carol Mountford.
