New harbour cruise service on the radar – but not this summer A hop-on hop-off cruise service was to be trialled by Fullers but has been put on hold. Fullers 360 CEO Mike Horne said: “Our intention was to start testing a hop-on hop-off style tourist cruise this summer, to link core Auckland destinations and experiences with downtown. “However, it’s going to take a while to get this extension of our existing Harbour Cruise up and running – most likely this will fall into next year.”

Fullers is excited about providing a new way for visitors to explore Auckland’s harbour on an all-day experience – complete with commentary and the opportunity to spend some time in multiple destinations including Devonport, as well as the Chelsea Sugar factory, Hobsonville and other areas, said Horne. “It’s important to note that this sits outside commuter offerings and would be priced to reflect the benefits of a tourism experience,” he said.

Mattea Mrkusic – Rhodes Scholar Former TGS head girl Mattea Mrkusic was back in New Zealand this month to receive a Rhodes Scholarship to the University of Oxford. She dropped in on the Flagstaff as well, and spoke to Rob Drent.

We end our conversation where it all began for Mattea Mrkusic – Devonport. She reflects on what a great place it is to grow up, a place of safety, but also one of inspiration. She is geniune when she thanks the teachers at Belmont Intermediate and Takapuna Grammar (TGS) Schools and other local mentors who encouraged her. Now though the world is at Mrkusic’s feet. The 24-year-old has just finished a degree at Harvard and was in Wellington earlier this month to receive the scholarship. In January, she’s off to Nepal with two others for six weeks to report on climate migration, thanks to a National Geographic early career explorers grant. After TGS, Mrkusic had been studying at Melbourne University for 18 months, but won the 2014–2015 Peter Brown Memorial Friendship Award. The American Club of New Zealand offered her a scholarship to Harvard University where she completed a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) majoring in Environmental Studies and Human Rights. She also had articles published in the Harvard Political Review. Now living in New York, Mrkusic has been active in human-rights work and political campaigns, and is particularlyinterested in climate change and its effects on people, especially through migration. She’s volunteered for the UN development programme, as well as producing Collapse the Distance, a multimedia climate-change storytelling project. It uses photojournalism, audio storytelling, video, and the written word and was exhibited in the United States. She also worked on a documentary on criminal justice on Louisiana. A Rhodes Scholarship is one of the most prestigious in world academia. In 2018, there were 100 scholarships offered around the world, three to New Zealanders. Mrkusic takes up the two-year Rhodes Scholarship in September 2019. She will study for a masters in refugee studies and forward migration and then a masters in public policy. Mrkusic’s mother Tracey Barnett has for many years been a prominent advocate for refugee rights. And while Mrkusic isn’t treading the same path, she’s certainly following Barnett’s direction. “You could say the apple does not fall far from the tree… I have learned a lot from her and it’s important to have a parent who teaches you compassion.” While the grass-roots activism in New

November 30, 2018 Trailblazing former MP Marilyn Waring interwove personal and politicial tales at the Depot Artspace on Saturday. She opened two exhibitions Ephemera: Remembering George and Fay Gair, and Insuffragable, commemorating 125 years of women’s suffrage, and featuring works by Linda Gair, Jacqui Kay and Kirsten Smith. Waring had strong connections to both exhibitions. Waring was the 15th woman elected to parliament when she became an MP in 1985. Times have moved on since then, with Jacinda Ardern the 99th female MP, and today there have been 149 female members of parliament. Waring said her grandmother had told a story of dressing in her Sunday best 125 years ago and her father taking her to town so she could see women voting for the first time. Prior to entering into politics, Waring had worked in the National Party research unit, where George Gair was her mentor. “George was an amazing teacher – he worked so hard.” Gair was North Shore MP from 1960 to 1990 and was famously offside with his party in his support of the legalisation of abortion and the need for homosexual law reform. Years later, Waring, then a lecturer at AUT, mentored Gair through a Masters of Philosophy and thesis: Managing Change as a Minister of the Crown. After Gair left parliament, he served as the High Commissioner of New Zealand in London, and was mayor of North Shore City from 1995 to 1998. Gair died in 2015, and his wife Fay in March this year. The ephemera at the exhibition contains speeches, cards, cartoons and memorabilia of a public life. Daughter Linda Gair said: “It’s a pleasure to share it with the people he loved the most – the people of the North Shore.” Depot convenor Linda Blinkco said Gair was mayor when the Depot was getting off the ground. “We have George to thank for our presence in this building,” she said. • The exbhibitions run until December 12.

Devonport at vanguard of changing travel behaviour The AT Local ride-share technology is based on a system used by Savy, a ride-share scheme that had been operating in Queenstown until October. The AT Local app was developed by the team behind Savy and modified for Devonport. Go Bus, which ran the Queenstown scheme, is supplying drivers for the Devonport version. Its business development director, Russell Turnbull, rejected assertions that Savy had failed. “It was a pilot project, which ran for a year.” During the pilot, 30,000 rides were taken by 10,000 customers. Turnbull said while lessons had been learned in Queenstown, the Devonport scheme differed in a number of ways: electric cars were being used and it was aimed at complementing bus and ferry services rather than being a stand-alone service. A shark, believed to be a bronze whaler, washed up at Stanley Bay on Sunday causing a stir amongst locals and on social media. Concerns were raised about the proximity of the shark to Stanley Bay Wharf – a popular jumping-off spot in summer for teenagers. Bronze whalers are common in Auckland waters and are not known to attack swimmers.

we had nothing else!) I hadn’t seen Willy for two decades but always retained a soft spot for him. I was a great fan of Funny Business, his comedy show. And in 2018, Willy has lost none of his comedic thrust. How did you find recovering from the stroke? “I thought I was doing brilliantly, but the doctors would ask me what was one plus one, and I’d say goat.” He still needs his stick to walk but his piercing blue eyes are as bright as ever. Comedians are expected to be funny at all times with no hint as to what is going on in their personal lives, and it struck me there is some commonality with journalists. Reporters are always supposed to be calm and polite, often the opposite to what they are feeling. For example, the morning of the interview was deadline day. I’d been in the office since 7.30am checking and changing pages, downloading real-estate advertising, nipping out to get a picture of a teachers strike and writing a couple of stories. Nerves were a little frazzled and it was only 10am. Half an hour for an interview with Willy and David was pushing it. I stayed for 40 minutes, and wish it had been longer. We parted and Willy said how good it was to catch up. It was good to see you too Willy, my old shiner. And I wish you and David well.

Medical specialists can have a funny manner, both in person and in correspondence. My cardiologist always starts letters with: “I was very happy to see Rob today.” I hate to think what my prognosis would be if he was unhappy to see me. I’m partial to a bit of black humour around health issues and mortality. (I have a regular lunch date with a friend nicknamed Dr Doom.) And I got plenty of gallows repartee when I went to interview Willy de Wit and David Downs earlier this month about their upcoming comedy show at The Vic. Willy had a stroke three years ago and David has been battling cancer. I met David outside the theatre, but adjourned next door to Corelli’s “as Willy is still not moving too well.” I interviewed Willy 20 years ago for the Flagstaff. (I can’t remember much about it that wasn’t printed, other than he had an impressive record collection and was a great sport about the photograph, jumping up and down behind a purple couch until we got the right shot.) Ironically, the AT scheme, if it succeeds, is at risk of cannibalising the public bus service, at least to a partial degree. Other competition is also emerging: the Lime scooters and a new pilot of mopeds on the Shore. Wouldn’t the money be better spent subsidising the comparatively expensive public bus options?

Cross with Auckland Transport I was unable to turn in or out of the north end of Wynyard Street yesterday because of construction work. Auckland Transport (AT) appears to have instigated another pointless project. By the time you read this, the pavement will have been extended to protrude into Clarence Street. I’m not sure what purpose this serves, except to make vehicles do riskier manoeuvres as they try and park. If AT intends to put yet another pedestrian crossing in there, I say, ‘enough’! What is the problem that AT is trying to solve here? I am a pedestrian, cyclist and driver, so I’m not biased one way or the other. But if speed is the issue, why don’t they just make Devonport a 30km/h zone? This has been

mooted before, and I don’t understand why it isn’t being done. I read something about an investigation being needed? What is there to ‘investigate’? A lower speed limit would be a much more pleasant and safer experience for all, including the Lime scooters and the new Kwikli mopeds launched locally. Putting up a few speed-limit signs has to be quicker and cheaper than building pedestrian crossings, and it provides a village-wide solution. Or if AT wants to focus on just one street, instead of a limp-wristed ‘share nicely’ approach, how about banning cars from Clarence Street altogether, to make it a pedestrianised area? Mary Taylor

Sixties starlet Suzanne still singing after all these years From being one of The Chicks to playing Madison Square Garden, Suzanne Lynch has had many musical highs. Today, she’s a sought-after vocal coach and still in hot demand as a performer. Helen Vause reports. Suzanne Lynch bounced onto the Kiwi music scene in the mid-1960s with her big sister Judy. They were The Chicks, Suzanne and Judy Donaldson from Henderson. They were the fresh new talent of the day and they were everywhere. From singing their hearts out and practising their dance moves in the family living room, the teens had an overnight run to the top when they were ‘discovered’ after a chance meeting with music-industry influencers. “We were so excited and Mum said we’d never hear from those guys again. But we did and it all started right there,” says Lynch, looking back over a lifetime in singing. More than half a century later, she is still very much on stage, making her one of the longestrunning names in pop music in the country. Singing is still at the centre of Lynch’s world, with a formidable list of gigs and a full vocalcoaching schedule, and the long-time Bayswater resident doesn’t see herself slowing down any time soon. “Singing is fabulous. It makes you feel great and I absolutely love sharing that with others. It’s an incredibly lucky life if your work is doing what you love.” Lynch was barely 14 years old when The Chicks took off and she and Judy were beaming into the nation’s living rooms every Saturday night on the C’mon TV show. It was the premier music series of the era and the showcase for all the Kiwi talent of the day. The Donaldson sisters, one blonde and one dark with matching bobs and knee boots, were suddenly very famous in New Zealand. The Chicks belted out the hits with the best Still enjoying a good sing... November 30, 2018 Lynch recalls a moment never to be forgotten: “It was in 1976. I was on stage at Madison Square Garden with Cat Stevens and we were singing Moonshadow. I looked down and there in the front row was Joni Mitchell listening to me sing. She was my idol and I did get to meet her after the show that night.” During those London-based years there were plenty of other amazing gigs singing backing vocals with big names – Neil Sedaka, Art Garfunkel, Olivia Newton John and others.

“It feels like an

incredible privilege to be so involved in growing new talent in this country.” New Zealand beckoned when the Lynches wanted to start a family. They set up home in Bayswater, where they’ve raised their now adult children, Amy and Andy. These days – though she is still performing – Lynch is using her talent to give back. As a vocal and performance coach, she often has as many as 30 pupils on her books. Some are locals, and some are from further afield and much more advanced in their careers – possibly in musical careers launched by Lynch in the first place.

She was a vocal and performance coach on TV music shows New Zealand Idol and New Zealand’s Got Talent, and occasionally was at the microphone herself doing backing vocals. “It feels like an incredible privilege to be so involved in growing new talent in this country, and that’s the thing that really drives me now. That, and of course singing myself.” The young singers you’d find her working with in her living room any day of the week have a huge mix of talent and range of styles. Some are just starting, and others are very well established and have come back to Lynch for further work. She’s probably helped launch more young singers than she can remember and, at times, she says, it’s felt like she’s taught half of Devonport. Three times a year her mixed bunch of students get to show off their talent in the concerts she organises for family and friends in a local venue. “At this time of year, lots of them are struggling with exams. I tell them to put away their books for a while and have a good sing. A good sing does wonders for us all. And for many of my students, I see what a difference singing makes to their whole lives and I’ve watched them grow their confidence and skill. “I’m hugely proud of them all. I follow them all and many keep in touch. I count myself very, very lucky at this time of my life to be able to be so much part of the music business. “So often, when I go to open the front door, there’s a student arriving for a lesson who throws their arms around me. That always feels pretty special.” Meanwhile Lynch’s own singing career has

This Chick is in hot demand. On many a night when other folks her age are settling into the sofa, Lynch is whizzing over the bridge in her glad rags and looking a million dollars for a late-night gig. And that’s very much how she likes it. She’s having a ‘good sing’ and why not? It’s been over five decades with more to come. “Retirement!” she says, flashing the blue eyes. “ I can’t even spell it.”

Soccer-ground upgrade out for public submission Dacre Park, the home of North Shore United football club (NSUAFC), will be able to be booked by members of the public for sports events, according to the council application to upgrade the fields. “The sports field will be able to be booked at any time (subject to the hours in its operating management plan) through council’s booking system,” the resource consent application says. “Booking requests can be made by the NSUAFC, the parent football federation, or by members of the public.” Under the upgrade, most of the fencing around the ground will be taken down and “pedestrian access to the facility will be unrestricted, although vehicular access to the carpark will be prevented at night.” The public has only until 18 December to

make submissions on the resource consent for the upgrade. Auckland Council is planning a multimillion-dollar upgrade of the fields, with the establishment of a new hybrid sports turf, new vehicle access and floodlighting. The public notification of the application was advertised last week. The Flagstaff understands the timing of the notification has annoyed some DevonportTakapuna Local Board members, as people have limited time for making submissions in the lead-up to Christmas. The proposal centres on the creation of the hybrid-turf surface on the site of the existing soccer pitch, an area of 8,456 sqm. This involves earthworks to establish the the turf and drainage system, as well as the clearance of ground cover and vegetation to

establish a car park and vehicle access from the south and north. Five new light poles and floodlighting will be included, with three poles on the southern side and two on the northern side. The lamps used would be bright enough for training but not competitive games, the application said. A total of 95 parking spaces would be available after the redevelopment is complete – 89 spaces at the playing fields and six adjacent to the Devonport Garden Centre, which would be unchanged. The dilapidated grandstand at the northern side of the playing field will be removed as part of the project, as will a number of trees. Copies of the resource-consent application can be viewed online on the Auckland Council website, or at Devonport Library.
