New JPs service for Devonport Devonport and Belmont Justices of the Peace are planning to open a service desk for the public in February next year in the new Devonport Library.

The service will initially operate one day a week. But it is hoped this might become more frequent once the service is up and running and becomes known locally.

Jo Cliffe, the Support Group Coordinator for Devonport-Belmont Justices of the Peace said there are now many other Service Desks like this throughout Auckland now as a way

of making access to a Justice of the Peace (JPs) simpler and easier for the public. JPs can take statutory declarations, witness documents and photocopies and have provided their services free of charge in New Zealand since 1814.

“We are very fortunate locally that the Devonport RSA lets us use their premises for ongoing training and support sessions and look forward to sharing our new service with the public when we start up in February next year,” Cliffe said.

Growing number of cyclists on Lake Road Lake Rd cycle-lane users have increased dramatically, growing by almost 10,000 last year, an Auckland Transport (AT) study has found.

An AT report to the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board says 95,922 cyclists used the lanes in 2011 and 2,000 additional cyclists used the lanes in 2012.

That number grew by almost 10,000 cyclists in 2013 to 107,735. Over the three years there was an increase of 13 %.

The source of the report was an automatic cycle monitoring site located on Lake Rd between the entrances of Takapuna Grammar and Belmont Intermediate schools.

Ferry to Rakino Island stops at Stanley Bay

Pontoon maintenance $6000 a pop

Belaire Ferries is into its second year of scheduled stops at Stanley Bay on the way to and from Rakino Island. From November 12 until February 8, the operator and Auckland Transport are putting on extra ferry runs to the island, as well as selected pick-ups and drop-offs at Stanley Bay on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

The Stanley Bay and Cheltenham Beach pontoons cost $6,000 to maintain annually, the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board was told. A council parks officer said the cost was for pulling each pontoon out of the water, cleaning them up and maintaining or repairing as necessary.

Board members collectively felt the cost seemed expensive.

Devonport’s water exposed to possible contamination A manhole cover on the Mt Victoria reservoir was forced open last weekend, leaving Devonport’s water supply exposed for more than a day.

Watercare have isolated both reservoirs (even though only one was affected) as a precuation and are carrying out extensive testing.

“We are using alternative sources to ensure supply to the Devonport area is not interrupted.

“We’re confident that this was an act of vandalism,” a spokesperson said. There is no visible evidence of contamination of the water supply.

The manhole is to the 2,000-cubic-metre litre water tank that feeds Devonport its water.

Local resident Roger Giles noticed the cover had been prised open during his Sunday morning walk across Mt Victoria. The lock of the gate leading to the gun emplacement was broken as well, he says.

Giles called Actionline at 11 am on Sunday morning but noticed on Monday that the cover was still unsecured. He called Watercare to alert them to the safety breach and was told an officer would be at the site within an hour to fix it.

Dufty holds his horses after injury

Devonport’s popular horse and cart might be off the road for the summer, after operator Dan Dufty injured himself.

Speaking from his hospital bed, Dan Dufty, owner of the local tourist attraction Town and Country Clydesdales, says he is uncertain of what the summer has in store for him and his horses.

Two weeks ago, he broke five of his ribs and punctured his lung while riding a young horse. Dufty, who is in his seventies, told the Flagstaff from Middlemore hospital that he is still “pretty sore” but hopes to recover to full health.

Anna started playing the cello as a child and returned to the instrument as an adult, when her children started playing, and found she “loved it.”

the school’s new array of solar panels can generate will be enough to power the entire school most days of the year.

He expects that savings on the school’s power bill will pay off the investment in technology within seven or eight years.

“We wanted to get as many solar panels as we could afford because a bigger system provides more benefits,” says Lawrence.

Bayswater School’s panels produce 6 kW and Stanley Bay School’s generate 4 kW. Lawrence says Vauxhall co-funded a total solar package worth $40,000 with Genesis, but won’t say how much the the school put in.

The money for it was mostly raised through the school’s Monster Mash event and other ongoing fundraisers, he says.

The solar electricity also delivers educa-

tional power, says Lawrence. “Our children will be able to access online real-time data about how much energy is generated, used and saved. We will be able to use this in environmental studies, maths and, with material supplied from Genesis, right across the curriculum,” he says.

Only a new school in the South Island is outstripping Vauxhall’s electricity output.

The project has been a team effort between the Board of Trustees, and its new strategic commitment to sustainability, and Palo Shannahan, the teacher leading Vauxhall’s Enviroschool initiative, says Lawrence.

The solar panels are part of a wider drive for sustainability at Vauxhall, including new class-room furniture that is made in New Zealand and from recycled materials, he says.

Open-plan classrooms create interest The open-plan classrooms that have a long tradition at Vauxhall School are now leading the way across New Zealand, says Vauxhall School Principal Gary Lawrence.

“We had 15 schools come and visit us this year to see our ‘modern learning en-

vironment.’

“That’s the new catch-phrase. We have always worked that way, so it makes us a bit different and exciting to see for other schools that will have to adapt a lot more to the new approach than we had to,” he says.

Bike shed latest waterfront idea A $350,000 covered bike shed, which would see parking spaces removed outside the ferry terminal, is being proposed for investigation by Auckland Transport (AT).

It is yet another controversial project offered up by AT for outside the ferry building.

A 50 metre-long bus shelter proposed on the waterfront raised widespread ire amongst Devonport residents. It is unlikely now to go ahead, due to budgetary constraints as much as anything.

The bike shed idea is one of a list of potential projects that could be funded by the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board’s Transport Capital Fund.

“A project the board could consider funding is providing covered bike parking in the west edge of Marine Square directly adjacent to the new walkway from Queens Parade,” the AT report to the board says.

“The facility would provide bike parking for 80 – 100 bikes and would necessitate the removal of 12 parking spaces in the long-term car park,” it says.

“The architects who designed Marine Square have provided a scope for this scheme. Preliminary costs are $300,000 to $350,000 including design, consents, approvals, etc,” it says.

The report says it would take six months to get a green light for the project and work could start immediately after that if funding was available.

Currently, uncovered bike and scooter parking at Devonport Ferry Terminal is provided to the west along the sea wall and at the bottom of Victoria Road along Windsor Reserve. There is also provision for bicycles along the western side of the boardwalk area.

At this stage the board has yet to discuss the proposal.

Kea’s new controls have teething problems, The Kea, the main ferry used on the Devonport-Auckland route, has broken down twice since it recently returned from survey.

Part of the survey work was to install new controls.

Fullers Operations Manager Tim Palmer says it’s been experiencing technical issues with the new controls.

Two weeks ago, Fullers took the Kea out of service yet again and Palmer says the company flew a support crew to New Zealand to fix it. He said at the time Fullers was confident the issues would be resolved quickly and the vessel returned to service

shortly after.

Last Thursday morning however, the Kea had another hiccup when it seemed to lose steering control on an early-morning run from Devonport to the city.

A source said: “We were floundering in the harbour for a bit and (the captain) managed to limp us in without towing.”

The Kea was back in operation later that morning.

Previously the board had felt a boundary of only 200m around primary schools was enough, as young children are less likely to be affected by a legal-high outlet than teenagers.

However board member Grant Gillon argued that the danger of normalising legal highs

around young children was a strong argument for extending the restriction around primary schools to 500 metres.

Under the Psychoactive Substances Amendment Act 2014, those substances that have been classified as low risk must be allowed to be sold in some local areas.

If the board proposals are taken up it would see less potential sales in Milford as well.

Dance for Elizabeth helps pay for hospital expenses

Elizabeth’s father Tima Moataane says the money will help his family with things like food, power bills, petrol for the car and parking at the hospital. “When she has chemo I sometimes go there twice a day and it adds up to $30 per day

in parking fees,” he says.

He thanked the 50 or so people who turned out for the dance at North Shore United football club to raise money.

Tima Moataane works part time as caretaker at St Leo’s School. “I have had to quit my other job at the supermarket to help out with Elizabeth and the other children,” says the father of seven.

Elizabeth is the second oldest.

Devonport’s Eliza McCartney and Ella Yelich-O’Connor (Lorde), whose 18th birthdays are within a month of each other, ruled the stage at Auckland’s two biggest events last Thursday night.

Lorde won six Tuis at the New Zealand Music Awards – Album of the Year, Single of the Year, Best Female Solo Artist, Best Pop Album, Highest Selling Single and the International Achievement Award – held at the Vector Arena.

Eliza received the ASB Young Sportswoman of the Year award at Eden Park for her pole vaulting achievements. These include winning the National Junior title and breaking all New Zealand age group and open records with the vault of 4.45 metres that placed her third at the IAAF World Junior Champs. She is only the second New Zealand woman – the other being Valerie Adams – to win a medal at an IAAF World Juniors event. It also ranks her second equal in the Commonwealth as a senior woman vaulter. She now holds all the New Zealand pole-vault records simultaneously.

Other Devonport category winners at the ASB College Sport awards were Harry Elworthy, for boys cycling (for the second consecutive year) and Markus Somerville for the boys yachting category. Community needs to get behind kids who commit stupid acts other because there is a charge on the boy that threw the punch.

We have known this boy for a long period now. He is not a bad person and has the full support of his family, friends and teachers.

The result of the punch would not have been his intention and it is certainly not in his nature to harm another. This was a very serious lapse of judgement and he realises this and is very remorseful.

We are in no way saying what he did is acceptable – very far from it. But you

Politicians let down locals on Lake Rd What a travesty that the Lake Road upgrade is now ‘off the table for at least the next 10 years’.

The decision to turn away from addressing the seven-day-a-week problem on ‘the worst urban road in Auckland’ is indicative of the inability of local politicians to serve the key needs of those who voted for them.

Harsh words? Read councillor Chris Darby’s letter in which claims to have ‘lobbied successfully to secure the $50m for improving Lake Road’ during his chairmanship of the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board. Political obfuscation at its best. If he had ‘lobbied successfully’ then the funding would have remained in place.

The reality is that, as a new city councillor, he has participated in a council that has completely

eradicated the funding. In its place, in a feeble attempt to retain credibility, he offers ‘dynamic LED lane markings capable of changing lane configurations as demand changes’. Any Lake Road user knows that the lanes are regularly jammed in both directions so the installation of ‘dynamic markings’ would be anything but dynamic and a waste of public funds.

Every day of the week, as Lake Road users face long tedious queues, their frustrations will be fuelled by their awarness of the lamentable failure of inept local politicians. Shame on each one of those who were elected to represent the interests of their fellow citizens and have let us down so badly.

Time for locals to manage Devonport After reading the latest Flagstaff with its news of the reintroduction of the ability to sell legal highs, the attempted reintroduction of chemical spraying, the “blowtorch on all projects” etc, and having observed the demolition of several items in order to replace them (eg the traffic islands at the start of Memorial Drive, various seats and rubbish bins around the place etc) , and

what with the huge rates we are charged (I’m not sure what for apart from rubbish removal), I would like to ask at what point we can call it quits and say that the unified Auckland Council is not actually working for us, secede and revert to management by a local Devonport board that actually cares and represents our community?

New library will reflect changing needs I was sorry to read of Sylvia Emm’s broken leg (Nov 14 issue, p.19) and hope that her recovery continues completely. On the other matter of her letter, I can provide some information to counter her view that libraries need to be smaller, not bigger. She is right about the development of electronic books, of course; booksellers and publishers are adjusting to their growing presence and inexpensive availability.

Libraries are changing, too. As well as making available an even bigger number of good old-format books from Auckland Libraries’ 52 branches, the new Devonport Library will make available large and small spaces for meetings of community groups.

The glorious impulse that makes people want to learn, read, discuss and compare experiences will be well supported in our new library. The architects listened sympathetically to what the Library Associates, and others, needed.

I hope Sylvia Emms will keep an eye out for our Library Associates’ posters; there will be

interesting events next year, as there have been every year since the Associates was formed more than forty years ago.

Sharpshooter makes the most of being led astray

At 65 Grant Hayward is at the top of his game. Having won the 2014 New Zealand Open Billiards title, his world ranking has zoomed to 25, sparking thoughts of a tilt at the world championships in England in 2015. The long-time stationery and bookshop owner talked to Rob Drent about his love of cue sports, playing for a living around the world and his family, who brought dance and theatre to New Zealand.

Most top sportspeople can remember the time they were hooked. Grant Hayward, one of New Zealand’s top billiards, snooker and pool players over many decades, remembers when he was lured astray.

“I was taken to the Takapuna Billiards Salon (then on the corner of Anzac St) when I was 15

by Rusty Willis, my best mate at school.

“He was a local character who led me astray you could say.”

The salon had eight full-sized tables. Kelly pool (where numbers are drawn to pot balls) was the game of the day.

“I developed my skills from there – I was keen and had a natural flair,” says Hayward. He also had top-flight eye to hand co-ordination.

As a youngster Hayward was good enough to win Auckland junior tennis under -13 doubles

He was runner-up in the singles.

He was also a keen rugby player playing for Takapuna juniors in the 50s prior to the Harbour Bridge opening. “I remember going down to Devonport to catch the vehicular ferry over to town to play the Auckland teams - it was a full day’s work for the parents.”

Hayward played at fullback for the Takapuna Grammar 1st XV in 1965, in a team that featured All Black great Brad Johnstone. Although he continued playing for Takapuna Rugby Club until age 21, the lure of the table was always his first calling and it also saw him right in his travels around the world.

Hayward continued to hone his cue skills at the North Shore Club in Takapuna, a small venue with two tables. “It was an old villa behind where Barfoot and Thompson is now, renovated by a couple of players.”

By the time of his OE in his early twenties, Hayward was good enough to support his travels by playing. He went to Australia in 1971-72 and South Africa in 1972-73 touring around and “playing for money on the tables.”

Then it was onto the west coast of America, for a tour of the States and Canada with a couple of Aussie mates, playing largely in cocktail bars.

The type of establishments portrayed by Paul Newman in the movie The Color of Money, “was not too far off” where Hayward played.

Back in New Zealand he met and married wife Helen in 1975 and bought a house in Bayswater. They have been in Beresford St ever since – although they lived in six different

November 28 2014 properties in the same road - before buying a section and building a house, “with a purposebuilt room for the snooker table,” adds Hayward quickly.

Growing up on the North Shore Hayward came from a prominent family with an interesting history. His great-grandfather was Henry Hayward, credited with bringing song and dance, and movies to New Zealand. Years of involvement in dance and theatre production led to movies, and by 1910 Hayward Picture Enterprises was a prominent film distribution company. In 1912 it controlled 33 picture theatres. The family set up the Gaiety Picture Theatre in Takapuna which later became the Tudor Theatre.

Helen and Grant had their first child Louise in 1979, followed by Philip (34), Nicola (28) and Matthew (27).

But Hayward still kept at his sport, taking up competitive snooker in the 1970s and winning around five Auckland titles in the 1980s. He went on to represent New Zealand in all forms of cue sport – snooker, billiards, and eight-ball and nine-ball pool. (Sons Philip and Matthew became handy players themselves winning national nine-ball titles.)

In the late 1980s Hayward represented New Zealand in snooker at the world champs in Singapore and the Asian champs in New Delhi and Beijing. “We were staying at a little hotel near Tiananmen Square where all the protests were happening – two days after we left it (the situation) blew up.”

On the snooker side, although the New Zealand players were not highly ranked, their

matches were played to an audience of 50 million Chinese television viewers.

In early 1990 Hayward bought Titchener’s Bookshop and Stationers located on Victoria Rd. It has been Hayward’s Paper Power ever since.

In the 1990s Hayward’s interests shifted to eight-ball and nine-ball: he was New Zealand number in nine-ball for five years.

“I played in four world championships (in Sweden, Taiwan, the United States and Wales), which was a great experience.

“Helen has been so supportive – although she has been on a few of the trips – I could not have done this without the support of my family.”

In recent years he has “gone back to billiards” – a game he had always loved because of its sheer difficulty.

“In billiards you have to control three balls.

Rather than two in pool and snooker - the potted ball and the cue ball.”

Even so he had not played the game competitively for three and a half years, when the chance come up this year to play some of the world’s best at home when a couple of local tournaments carried world-ranking points.

Hayward won the Hamilton Open and then the New Zealand Open title in September. The wins earned him a world ranking of 25 – and a chance of making the world champs draw in 2015.

However it wasn’t all plain sailing in the international field of 25 players, with Hayward narrowly beating Jason Colebrook (Melbourne) 344-342 in the quarter finals then edging out Sydney’s George Chammas 445-421 in the semi-finals.

Success, as in all things, is attention to detail.

He has played with the same oak cue for 30 years. “The tip is the most important part – it needs to be rigid to control the cue ball properly.”

In the two weeks prior to the New Zealand Open, Hayward was practising for one and half hours per day. “Billiards you play by yourself, so you have got to be disciplined.

“But after 50 years of playing (cue sports) you have seen all the angles – it’s just a tune-up.”

Hayward finds the most difficult aspect to the game as he gets older is the concentration.

“You play over a two-hour period,so your concentration can wane - keeping at it can be a bit of a challenge.”

He is excited that there will be four world ranking tournaments in New Zealand next year.

But in the meantime you can find him behind the counter of Hayward’s Paper Power most days, except Wednesday afternoons, when the nine-handicapper (his best was five) is out on the Waitemata Course playing a social round of golf.

“I’m keeping going at the business at this stage – it’s been a great lifestyle business, living and working in Devonport.

“All the kids have worked in the shop at various stages and it’s been wonderful for them getting experience working with the public and the great people of Devonport.”

He recalls some special connections were made over the years. Anna Kidd (who recently died) used to come in once a week for a magazine order and had a special affinity with son Matthew. “She used to give him a hard time and he used to give her a hard time. Those sorts of relationships have been great to see.”

Libraries essential for democracy and free thought As Sylvia Emm rightly pointed out in her letter last week, libraries can no longer simply be depositories of books. However, suggesting that the growth of the Ebook means it is necessary to shrink libraries is like someone from the 1950s suggesting that the escalator will render stairs redundant. Ebooks represent only a fraction of the market at present and, while their growth may threaten the bookstore, they will only enhance the library experience.

There was a time when bookstores and record shops were sombre places where stock was piled onto tables and people browsed in silence - something only Bernard Black could admire. Then companies like Virgin Records revolutionised the way people shop. A Virgin Megastore was not just a shop, but a place for people to gather and connect over music.

Libraries, for the sake of their survival, must be dynamic community centres where wisdom

can be exchanged, ideas challenged, politicians chastised, and where bibliophiles discuss their latest obsession. If we assume that libraries can survive as shelving units we are not only antiquated in our thinking, but missing the reason libraries exist in the first place: to liberate the mind. It is an absolute miracle that in the face of budget cuts we have a council investing in knowledge.

However, it is not enough to say that if we build a library that people will flock to it as the animals did to the ark. The future of the library depends on its ability to respond to the unforeseeable needs of its users, most of whom are yet to be born. The new Devonport Library (which has almost exactly the same footprint as the old library) will be a space that fosters 21st century learning and introduces a new generation to the infinite capacity of human brilliance. Its various meeting rooms and study spaces have expanded its capabilities and made it possible to offer impr oved community services, as well future-proof those not yet envisaged.

Last week Sylvia referenced with horror ‘surplus space’ in the new building, as if there could be such a thing as too much library. Her concern was that the library might hire out the space to the community. Forgive me for not understanding Sylvia’s fears, but that is exactly what the library should be used for. The facilities at the RSA and the community house are inappropriate for many events and the library provides an exceptional alternative. We need to get smarter about how we use public space to maximise efficiency. All around the country we have schools left empty when vacated by students at three o’clock. It is not a travesty worthy of a letter to the editor when we fill these

ghost towns at night. Why not apply the same modelling to libraries?

When the new library was still in the design stage, I was invited to provide consultation on behalf of Takapuna Grammar students. Despite being disappointed that my fellow consultants (all of whom were at least double my age) did not share my aesthetics, I was encouraged that we all agreed that libraries are a wonderful necessity in a democratic society. But there is no denying that they are under threat by governments hellbent on cutbacks. Their future depends on their ability to be exciting clubhouses for controversy and debate. The old library was unfit for this purpose. Athfield Architects have created a building with a variety of spaces that can be zoned off, so that raucous discussion can take place in one room while readers read quietly in another. The ability to create different zones within the building will also allow for longer opening hours, meaning that business people will be able to access the library on the way to the ferry. And the study rooms will give Ron Dykman a place to register his innumerable grumbles with the Flagstaff while leaving the rest of Devonport in peace. An absolute bargain at $8 million.

As a community I worry that the Devonport can often be resistant to change. This is both our greatest asset and our biggest curse. As an historic community, we must always respect our past. But we should not let it cloud our ability to look into the future. I truly believe that Devonport is the best place to bring up children in the world, and I was incredibly lucky to grow up here myself. If this is our mandate then we must build with the needs of our children in mind.

The Devonport Chamber Orchestra and the Auckland Welsh Choir joined forces again recently for an end-of-year concert. This has become a regular and welcome event, judging from the full audiences at their performances in Remuera’s Somervell Church and at Holy Trinity Church Devonport on November 16.

The conductor was Diana Rhodes, who is the choir’s director.

Following a stirring rendition of the Welsh national anthem, the choir presented three songs based on folk tunes related to water – in England, Scotland and China. The choir has strength in all sections and performed two unaccompanied songs and one with orchestra.

The orchestra, led by Helen van Druten, then performed Ottorino Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances Suite No 1. This was a richly orchestrated representation of courtly pieces for dancers and instrumentalists.

There were opportunities aplenty for soloists within the orchestra to shine.

Love and Laughter was the title given to five songs for choir – the first two unaccompanied and then two with sensitively

played woodwind accompaniment. Brooke van Velden and Philip Morgan Rees were the soloists in The Turtledove. The music for Aorangi – Requiem to TD Burnett was composed by the conductor and was the sole piece with a New Zealand flavour. It was an elegy to one of the South Island’s high country settlers. Bassoon and clarinet accompaniment for the Miller of the Dee brought a comic touch to the drinking song, sung by the men of the choir.

The final work was Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Christmas Carols for Choir and Orchestra. It began with a haunting cello solo played by Graham Falla, followed by solo baritones, Philip Morgan Rees and Vanya Boikov and then choir. Based on several early Christmas carols from southern England, with suggestions of others in the orchestral part, there were hints of plainsong and early harmonies. It was a joyous end to a polished and varied concert and heralded the Christmas season in fine style. At the Saturday performance the proceeds of the concert were presented to representatives of the Child Poverty Action Group.

Hauraki gymnasts jump for gold at primary champs

Two Hauraki School gymnasts were the top performers at this year’s North Harbour Gymnastic Primary School Zone Day. Sienna Gray came first in floor, beam, bars and vault she was also first overall and in the winning team. Harrison Smith also placed first all round, and first in horizontal bar, vault, rings and pommel.

Both eleven-year-old Year 6 students train hard. For Sienna it’s 20 hours a week and for Harrison it’s16. Harrison also plays rugby and cricket, but for Sienna gymnastics is taking up all the time she has.

Both started gymnastics early. Sienna did Kindy Gym at age two and hasn’t looked back since. She has been competing since she was eight. This October, she achieved first overall and firstteam in the New Zealand National GymSports Championships held in Henderson in October.

Harrison says he was a bit older when he got into the sport. “I really liked to move around when I was three or four, so I joined the gym,” he says.

“The skills are hard and they take a long time to get,” Harrision says. Not hitting the Pommel handles with your legs while doing 20 or 30 circles on them, is technically challenging, he says.

For Sienna her challenge is getting the strength that is required on the uneven bars or beam. Her favourite apparatus is the floor.

“I like the music and I used to do dance. It’s hard but it’s fun,” she says.

Hauraki’s Year 3 and 4 Girls A team came third overall and third as a team. The Year 5 and 6 Girls A team came third as a Raising the bar…Harrison Smith and Sienna Gray dream of team. The Year 5 and 6 boys came first overall and second as a competing at Olympic-level gymnastics team. As a school, Hauraki placed third equal.

Kohanga reo the darling of Kapa Haka Festival

They represented nearly the entire roll of 16 at the local Te Hau Kapua Te Kohanga Reo preschool on Roberts Ave, behind Bayswater School.

The children, from infants to five-yearolds, performed six songs, including a short version of the Ka Mate at the event held on November 17.

Lucy Naylor said that as host of the annual event for the Devonport cluster of primary and intermediate schools: “We wanted to open the event up a little more and become a focus for the entire community. After all it’s all about community, family and whanau, about everyone being together and being one.”

Gail Kapa, who has been working at the Bayswater Kohanga since 1988, says that the preschoolers made up some of their te reo song themselves, including Pono Ki te Kaupapa.

“Other songs have been given to us by other

Kohanga Reos. All are true to our philosophy of language, family and children,” she says.

Te Hau Kapua Te Kohanga Reo was officially set up in 1986, initially to support families working at Devonport Naval Base, after two previous local Kohanga reo preschool run by volunteers looked for a permanent home.

“One Kohanga was at Takarunga Playcentre The other was at Narrow Neck Playcentre,” says Kapa. It is currently located on council land alongside Bayswater School.

Kapa says today the school has become home to a “real cross section of local families.”

Eighty friends of the Bike Devonport Facebook page met in the flesh recently and seemed to “like” each other for real.

Chris Werry, who initiated the page and is the group’s spokesperson, organised the day to put substance behind the online presence. “It is easy to hit ‘Like’ on the computer, but to be successful at promoting local cycling, we need people to be in it for real and to commit to more than that,” he says.

The all-age group met in Devonport and cycled together to Narrow Neck Beach, where a sausage sizzle awaited them. Riders included young families as well as older cyclists such as local councillors Chris Darby and George Wood.

Werry’s goal is to make cycling in Devonport safe, so that locals from age eight to 80 will cycle to get around, and to travel to school, the library,

and the beach.

Last month, Werry presented a strategic plan on how to transform cycling on the peninsula to the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board.

The “Devonport Bike Plan” is a list of practical and relatively low-cost ideas. These include: a barrier of flexi-sticks along the Lake Road cycle lane, cycle lanes on other arterial roads ( like Bayswater Ave, Calliope and Vauxhall Roads) an extended Green Route, a network of “shared paths” on wide sidewalks, 30 km/h speed limits on side streets, shared zones within Devonport village and bike parking spots everywhere.

Last week Bike Devonport, along with other community and business groups, was invited to a workshop on the new Lake Road Corridor Management Plan to give its input into the planning process, a Facebook post said.

National Sea Scout Regatta at Narrow Neck Narrow Neck Beach will host the 27th National Sea Scout Regatta from December 27 to January 5.

The Calliope Sea Scout Group will be participating at the regatta, with a contingent of 20 Sea Scouts and Venturers, assisted by four leaders and three parent helpers. The regatta will comprise sailing competitions in both the Sunburst and Sea Scout Cutter at Junior, Intermediate and Senior levels. Other activities include swimming, ironman, seamanship and camping standards. There will more than 500 Sea Scouts from around New Zealand participating, and all vying to win the Jellicoe Trident, which is the supreme award for top overall Sea Scouts group. Other trophies and awards are also up for grabs.

The entire contingent will be under canvas at HMNZS Tamaki, and will walk daily to Narrow Neck Beach for the day’s activities.

The area immediately surrounding Wakatere Boating Club will be secured for the boats and trailers.

Devonport Sea Scout group leader Chris Leech said no trailers will be left on the beach during sailing activities, to ensure that the beach will be fully accessible to the public.

“Every effort will be made to ensure that there is little disruption to their activities,” he said.

Graffiti brightens up Devonport Splashes of colour are popping up all over Devonport, the latest on a formerly grey wall between the Devonport Community House and the Depot Artspace.

Local graffiti artist Sparrow Philips has spraypainted a stencilled image of a girl sitting on a pile of books while transfixed by the screen of a tablet in her lap. It was initiated by Devonport Arts Festival organiser Toni Van Tonder, together with other graffiti work on the Firefly building and a canvas hanging on the outside of the Victoria Theatre.

Devonport Community House manager Rebecca McMillan finds the image thought provoking. “As the mother of children at the age when technology tends to take over, I really like the comment Sparrow makes and that it is speaking to kids and parents alike and hopefully makes us stop and think,” she says.

Depot Artspace manager Linda Blincko says the image has brightened her day. “When you walk down Clarence Street on a grey day, it pops out and is so enlivening and uplifting,” she says.

“Plus, it’s a great piece of art outside the gallery.”

TGS students help commemorate Passchendaele Students from Takapuna Grammar School (TGS) attended a Glenbrook Vintage Railway event on Labour Day to commemorate the visit of the steam locomotive Ab 608 ‘Passchendaele recently restored by Steam Incorporated. Matthew Berrington, Adam Purcell and Mitch Campbell-Dean had contributed the flagpoles and the stand for the New Zealand, Belgian and Passchendaele flags from work done in their Year 13 Technology class. The flagpoles were first used at the Auckland War Memorial Museum at the 12 October commemoration of the 96th anniversary of the Battle for Bellevue Spur [Passchendaele].

The Ab 608, built at Addington Workshops in Canterbury, was named ‘Passchendaele’ in 1925 to commemorate the New Zealand railwaymen whose lives were lost on the

Electricity cable for Windsor Reserve forgotten in library build A power cable for Windsor Reserve, which was requested by the DevonportTakapuna Local Board as part of the new library build has been left out of the project by mistake.

Board Chair Mike Cohen says that council staff are looking into fixing the oversight but it might be too costly and too late to add a pull-through cable. It was designed to make holding events at Windsor Reserve easier.

Bigger typeface on bus timetables considered

Plunket’s new president from Devonport

Bus shelter timetables around Devonport are proving hard to read and the type may be made bigger.

After prompting from Mike Cohen, who told Auckland Transport officers that the imformation on the timetables displayed at bus shelters is hard to read, the organisation is now looking into increasing the type size and reformatting the current timetables to make them easier to decipher.

Andrée Talbot went to her first Plunket coffee group only days after daughter Evie was born 19 years ago and she has been part of the organisation ever since.

This month, Talbot was elected President of the Royal New Zealand Plunket Society, after having served on Plunket committees, councils and boards over the years.

Sister Kidd delivered hundreds of Devonport babies

Devonport obstetric nurse from 1957 until 1975, Anna Kennedy Kidd (28/9/1926 – 12/11/2014) Anna Kennedy Kidd, the nursing sister at Devonport Obstetric hospital for almost 20 years, has died aged 88.

Sister Kidd was born in Auckland in 1926 to Alfred and Jemima Kidd, Scottish immigrants living in Wellington St, Auckland.

Anna’s family returned to Scotland for her early years and she strongly identified with this part of her heritage. During World War II she served as a Wren in the Navy. In 1946 her parents decided to return to New Zealand.

Anna followed suit, training as a nurse in Christchurch.

In the early 1950s Anna got a position as a nursing sister at the Devonport Obstetric Hospital, in Buchanan St, where she was later promoted to the role of matron. After her father passed away, Anna and her mother moved into a cottage close to the hospital

where Anna was to live for the rest of her life. From 1957 until 1975 Anna delivered hundreds of babies and she became a mainstay in the Devonport community. She was highly respected for her caring, compassion and competence. “Sister Kidd’ was an integral part of the Devonport village.

Her close proximity to her patients and staff meant that she was often called out on all manner of medical emergencies when she was off duty and she put in long hours of service to her work. Following the closure of the maternity hospital, Anna continued her nursing career at National Women’s Hospital, where she was a respected and formidable ward sister.

After her retirement in 1986, Anna was lucky enough to be surrounded by a strong community of friends who she also thought

of as her family. She has had many substitute children and grandchildren who have returned her affections. She also had a number of furry and feathered children, who brought her much joy throughout her life and many of the neighbours’ furry friends would also call by to visit for titbits. Gardening was one of her personal passions and triumphs and this has given much joy to all those who passed by her cottage and often spent time chatting to her.

Anna was a generous friend, kind of heart, quick of wit and stern with fools.

All those who knew her had the view that she would always be there, pottering in the garden, chatting to passers-by, sitting on the porch crumbling bread for the birds or having a cup of tea in the sun. She will be well remembered and sorely missed.

But with son Finlay’s (9) severe cerebral palsy, getting around is becoming increasingly difficult as he is growing up.

“He needs more and more adaptive equipment to maintain his quality of life,” says Finlay’s mother Kim. One of those is an all-terrain wheelchair so Finlay can keep going to the beach with his family.

The Butchers are looking for help from the Devonport community for financing this. As of Monday, they had raised $1,600 for the $5,000 wheelchair.

TGS 1st XI cricket team achieves breakthrough win

Takapuna Grammar 1st XI cricket team is heading into the Premier league after winning the Premier B Auckland Secondary Schools Championship.

The side nailed the title after a two-day -final win against Kristin School.

Takapuna Grammar (TGS) had a firstinnings success on day one and needed just 66 runs to overtake Kristin’s innings totals of 60 and 79 for an outright win.The TGS batsmen soon found out why Kristin’s batsmen had struggled with the conditions and, in the face of some tight bowling, suddenly found themselves five wickets down for only 22 runs. Luckily opener Toby Robb, and captain Matt Strain, batting at 7, settled into a winning partnership and brought the game home safely in the 22nd over.

Three teams were in contention for the championship going into the final round of the competition, all hopeful of the opportunity for promotion to Premier A next year But TGS was the only team to win outright and score maximum points. Promotion will place them back amongst the top echelon of cricketing schools in Auckland, a huge boost to the school’s sporting profile, and greater recognition for its cricket programme and players.

Top batsmen for the season were Mitchell Bremner 362 runs (average 45.3) and Sam Hinds 361 runs (average 45.1) Top bowler was Connor Bessell, with 22

The season also featured two maiden centuries for Sam Hinds (114) and Mitchell Bremner (126).

TGS has an extremely strong cricket tradition, producing players such as the legendary Bert Sutcliffe, Danny Morrison and Richard Jones, but it is believed to

be 28 years since the school last won this championship.

TGS expects to be competitive, and carry its strong form into the 2015 Premier A competition, as it will lose only one player from this year’s team.

Play in the Premier A competition starts in early February 2015.
