The saving of the Christchurch Arts Centre, one of the country’s most famous restorations, is the subject of the next Devonport Heritage night on 29 November.

Local heritage architect Dave Pearson is the conservation consultant for the giant restoration project, which is expected to cost $290 million and be completed in two to three years.

The 23 stone buildings that make up the complex were severely damaged in the Christchurch earthquakes. The subsequent restoration is one of the largest of its types in the world and has received a number of awards, including one from UNESCO. With a local architect so closely involved, Devonport Heritage felt it was a great opportunity to hear about the epic restoration.

Pearson will outline the scale of the destruction and the mammoth job the engineers and architects faced when starting the project.

Back in Devonport, Bernice Beachman will look at St Leonards Rd, as part of the ‘Streets Where We Live’ series.

Laughter can be the best medicine Comedians David Downs and Willy de Wit are back on stage together for the first time in 20 years – with stories of comedy and pathos.

For A Limited Time, a live comedy show that will debut at The Vic theatre on 8 December, brings the pair together to reflect on life after serious illness. They have respectively had, as they put it, a mild touch of cancer and a stroke (of genius).

According to Downs, working with de Wit again “is like finding a favourite pair of pants down the back of the wardrobe. They still fit, they are comfortable and familiar, but you’ll only know if they’re still fashionable once you wear them outside”.

De Wit concurs. “Working with David is… gosh, only 53 days until Christmas.”

Downs, now a senior manager at New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, survived cancer by undertaking a ground-breaking treatment in the United States called CAR T-cell therapy; de Wit suffered a stroke in April 2016 and has been recovering for the last two years.

For both, it’s their first return to the stage since being faced with their own mortality.

For A Limited Time will also feature de Wit’s daughter Miriana McGechie and Downs’ son Joshua Downs.

David Downs, who co-founded the Classic Comedy Club and was in TV3’s 1990s show Away Laughing, had been told he had less than a year to live before he got onto a clinical trial for CAR T-cell therapy earlier this year. It saved his life.

The treatment harnesses the body’s own immune system to fight cancer, and is recognised as opening a new frontier for treatment. During his treatment and recovery, he wrote for Stuff and was featured on TV3’s The Project and in the Flagstaff.

De Wit was a high-profile comedian during the 1990s and a member of the comedy troupe Funny Business, which had its own sketch show in the late ’80s. He was also a Radio Hauraki host for 12 years.

De Wit was in a wheelchair as he recovered from the stroke, but is now able to walk with a stick.

The pair have known each other for more than two decades. Downs even married his wife, Katherine, in de Wit’s Devonport Bond St home in 1995.

The idea for the joint show was hatched at de Wit’s birthday party in 2017. Downs had just been given the diagnosis that he had terminal cancer. de Wit wanted his old friend to hang around a bit.

“I am so blessed to have the love and care of this galoot,” de Wit, says of Downs, 25 years since they were last on stage together.

“We made a kind of pact. ‘I said, ‘David you can’t die, you’ve got to go on stage with me’.

It’s a reward for sticking around.”

The show will be in a sense “cathartic”, says de Wit. “It will address our mortality,” but through a comedic lens.

Janayah wins a solo spot at Christmas in the Park

Reaching for the stars… Janayah Wadsworth’s stellar 2018 continues Thirteen-year-old Janayah Wadsworth will sing solo at this year’s Coca Cola Christmas in the Park at the Auckland Domain on 8 December, topping off a stellar year for the Takapuna Grammar School (TGS) student.

In her first year at high school she has been awarded the 2018 North Harbour Club AIMES (Arts, Innovation, Music, Education, Sport and Service to the Community) Junior Excellence Award for arts and won the TGS Talent Show.

Being selected to perform at Christmas in the Park is the cream on the cake, and something she is “very excited about”.

Janayah has previously featured in the

Flagstaff as a two-years-in-a-row Belmont Intermediate School Idol winner.

She has had vocal lessons with well-known singer and vocal coach Suzanne Lynch since she was nine years old. Lynch, one half of the legendary duo The Chicks, has also taught her vocal technique and performance skills, and mentored her as she makes her way into the entertainment industry.

DevonportProperty.nz Report — October 2018 Buyers in the driving seat as listings flood the market Spring is the most active period of the property year and no single month is more active than October.

This year is no different, with a flood of new listings. What is unusual, and significant, is the slowdown in sales volumes. This situation now places the local Devonport market firmly in the category of a ‘buyer market’. There’s ample choice for buyers, who now wield power to select and negotiate; this presents a significant challenge for sellers as the competition for buyer attention is tough and their negotiation power is slipping away.

In just the past three months, 77 new properties have come onto the market.

Meanwhile, just 40 properties have been sold, pushing available inventory to a record high of 57 properties. By comparison, at this time last year buyers had just 37 properties to choose from.

Bill far from frugal with his time on the bugle

“They initially thought it might be a job for three people, but it was a great privilege to be asked and it has been an honour to do it.”

Rimmer uses a cornet he first played as a nineyear-old. He was a member of the Devonport Silver Band and his first military remembrance engagement was in 1964, at the Takapuna Grammar School Anzac Day service.

He is a member of the Territorial Force and since 1989 has played in the Band of the Royal Regiment of New Zealand Artillery, which is involved in Anzac Day services and performs regularly at Ryman Healthcare villages.

Salmond wins prestigious award for a lifetime’s work Devonport architect Jeremy Salmond has been awarded the 2018 New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) Gold Medal in recognition of an outstanding career in heritage and conservation architecture.

Over the last 30 years, Salmond has worked on many of New Zealand’s most significant heritage buildings. Those include the Stone Store in Kerikeri and Pompallier House in Russell; Auckland’s former Chief Post Office, War Memorial Museum and Art Gallery;

Belmont Park scoops Squash Auckland awards Belmont Park won numerous citations at the Squash Auckland Excellence Awards last Saturday, including Club of the Year.

Belmont also won Coach of the Year (Manu Yam), Young Sportsman of the Year (Gabe Yam), Young Sportswoman of the Year (Natalie Sayes) and Sportsman of the Year (Matthew Lucente).

Ride-share scheme with million-dollar budget

Auckland Transport (AT) with help from the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) is funding a one-year trial of the EV ride-share scheme, as part of efforts to reduce traffic on Lake Rd running in and out of Devonport.

The scheme was originally due to start in November, but no date has been set yet. Testing of the app used to book and deliver the service is still underway, an AT spokesman said.

AT has received $1million from NZTA to fund the project. The ride-share shuttle would use three electric cars, which are already in AT’s fleet. In addition, AT has bought three vans at a cost of $80,000 each.

AT will have to fund the costs of the project if it goes north of the $1 million mark.

It is difficult to know how much the project would actually cost as it depended on “how

“We [AT] also expect that by getting more people onto the ferry, we can reduce congestion in the area; and by giving people an alternative to driving to the terminal, we can free up parking spaces in the [Devonport] town centre.”

Residents within three kilometres of the ferry terminal will be able nominate a pick-up spot for the on-demand service, using the AT Local app.

Board member Mike Sheehy said: “Where it all comes unstuck is that each ride is subsidised by $14 per ride. If the ride-share works at its optimum, the subsidy will be $19,600.00 per week.”

A passion for biking and the environment led life-long Devonport local Alex Munro to combine two of his favourite things and open electrify.nz Browns Bay. I’ve interviewed a few 100-year-old Devonport residents over the years and, without fail, at some stage they offer their lengthy memories of shops and retailers that have come and gone in the village. ‘Remember when we had a Farmers in the main street?’ ‘What about the CD shop?’ Others recall the days when we had our own council offices. Many services have been lost in the name of progress or due to commercial changes such as the rise of malls and online shopping.

The latest casualty is the Devonport Copy Shoppe, which operated in the main street for more than two decades, and was run for almost 20 years by Matt and Lynn Walker.

Matt and Lynn are both at retirement age and facing health problems, but it’s sad that they have had to close the shop – its margins having grown so small they felt it was a waste of time trying to sell it.

Over the years, home printers and the use of PDFs (which cut down the need for printing) have reduced the traffic at the shop. Matt likened the demise to the Post Office, which simply lost its core reason to be. Just as people are sending less mail, they are printing less. It’s still a great shame that another service has gone from

Yachtswoman goes solo in Coastal Classic Tamsin Worsley is an experienced yachtie, but took on a new challenge when she decided to sail the annual Auckland to Bay of Islands race single-handed. She tells Helen Vause about her 26 hours at the helm.

“I’ve been sailing since I was about six,” says Worsley. “Dad got us all into it early and Before After it’s always been a huge part of my life.

about being the first woman to do it. It was an individual challenge for me.

“It was all about self-reliance and confidence in myself. It would be all up to me.”

Worsley has spent hundreds of hours on the harbour and the Hauraki Gulf, and she’s crewed many times on the overnight haul to Russell. Her husband Phil has learned to sail under her guidance, and her 15-year-old son Josh has made many trips to Great Barrier Island under sail with his mum.

No one doubted she could do it, but her solo sail in this year’s Coastal Classic was set to be a different sort of adventure.

To find a suitable boat to race, Worsley turned to boat-sharing company YachtShare and chose Ora Rosa, a 36-foot J112 for her solo voyage.

Her race preparations began many months in advance of the event. Looking back, she says there was more work involved than she’d anticipated: fitness training at the gym was essential in boosting strength and balance; getting safety gear and preparations sorted was a painstaking exercise, more so obviously for a solo sailor who needs to be attached to the boat all the way.

November 16, 2018 “Safety is a very big thing and it needs a lot of consideration,” says Worsley. “This is where sailing solo is different – it’s that safety detail.

And when you’ve got it all set up you need to be mindful that you need to move around the boat in a very conscious way.”

It was all about anticipation, preparation and organisation, she says. But you could throw in a good dollop of courage too. Undeterred by the routine procedures for ‘man overboard’, she laughs: “You just don’t want to fall in.”

“I moved as much as I could. I was in for a big day and really you just have to settle in and enjoy it.”

She loved the light, fast boat she would be sailing and she was very confident in her own sailing ability, but she did have one disadvantage. Unlike many of the other boats competing, Worsley had no self-steering gear – the equipment that allows a sailor to set up autopilot and take a break from standing at the wheel. It gave an edge to the challenges that she faced once she was underway.

When race day arrived on the Friday morning of Labour Weekend, Worsley was more excited than she was apprehensive.

She’d made a number of oversight solo trips on Ora Rosa and she had terrific support from family, friends and sailors. But when she lined up for the start among 165 boats that morning, she was just out of bed and recovering from a chest infection.

“At one point I had thought I might not be going. I certainly was not in top form, but I had my antibiotics to take with me and I decided I was good enough to go.”

The fleet took off in a good breeze. “Right from the start I knew the wind conditions were going to make this race much more difficult and a long haul. We were all beating up on the nose through the Tiri Channel and for the first four hours I couldn’t get off the helm at all. I moved as much as I could. I was in for a big day and really you just have to settle in and enjoy it.

“It started to get dark as we were crossing Bream Bay. It was a beautiful night with a half moon and shooting stars. It’s different sailing at night, but you have to be paying close attention all the time.”

Of course it gets a whole lot colder as night falls too, and hardly letting go of the helm, she wriggled into extra layers and a balaclava.

Pretty much everything she needed had to be within reach of the wheel; food, fluids and antibiotics included.

“I was very focused on trying to keep up speed and some of the time I was struggling to do that with the wind dropping off.”

She wasn’t scared but she was challenged throughout the race. Calls from her husband and her son during that night were a welcome boost to her spirits. And her sister Amanda, a race veteran herself, regularly checked on progress.

In the daylight, she rounded the waters of spectacular Cape Brett, through the gap to Percy Island, under full sail with five other boats in sight.

“I was needing to put the kite up but there was a really big roll and there was no way I could manage to get it up in the conditions.

With the sun now up and beating down on her head, it was time for the very fatigued sailor to wriggle back out of those woollies.

Once around the cape, the wind fell right

off. While some of the fleet appeared to be virtually parked by the calm, Worsley made the decision to sail out to the right, hoping to catch some wind.

It wasn’t a successful move. The wind shifted, and she was well off course, losing time and losing the wind again. She was disappointed but still felt she’d made the right decision as she moved slowly towards the finish line off Russell – 26 and a half hours after the start gun.

Her brother Matt – one of her very supportive advisers – had come in well ahead to win the solo division of the race. Despite the slow last leg, Worsley placed second, even though most, if not all, of her competition had the advantage of self-steering.

Waiting at the grand old Duke of Marlborough Hotel on the Russell waterfront was a family group ready to celebrate with Worsley at proud mother Robin’s 84th birthday lunch.

Worsley was exhausted mentally and physically, but delighted to have crossed the finish line and taken a top placing. But would she do it again?

“I’d need some more time to consider whether I would want to do it again. This was a personal challenge for me. If I did do it, I would have self-steering gear so that I could be more competitive.”

In her day job on dry land, Worsley is also very much a one-woman show. She is a performing poet for children, creating her own material and costumes for presentations to school groups.

It is like no other job: “Sometimes I dress up like a pirate.”

A favourite poem she’s penned is Old Man Wind: she shares with spellbound kids the havoc he can cause as he whistles around. It’s not hard to imagine there could be a few more verses written about the tricks he might be able to play on solo seafaring mothers seeking friendly breezes.

NZ Sculpture OnShore chairwoman Sally Dewar highlighted the importance of Women’s Refuge, the beneficiary of the fund-raiser being held at Fort Takapuna Several hundred guests attended the NZ Sculpture OnShore gala opening earlier this month. Birdlife appears to be thriving thanks to rat campaign Rat trapping on Maungauika/North Head has only been going for 16 months but already seems to be having an impact on rat numbers – and birdlife.

Anecdotal reports from volunteer trappers and residents around the maunga indicate that the number and variety of birds have definitely increased since the trapping began.

However, the impact could have been even greater were it not for the persistent vandalism that has often reduced the number of set and baited traps available to catch pests.

Jim Eagles, the volunteer who checked the traps when trapping started in August last year and still one of the team of 15, says the vandalism has been very frustrating. “We can see for ourselves as we go around checking traps that rat numbers have decreased and bird numbers have increased, so that’s fantastic.

“But how much better would we be doing if we didn’t constantly find trapping tunnels kicked over and the traps set off, or the tunnels and traps tossed down the hillside into the bushes or thrown off the cliff into the sea?

“Right from the start we’ve had these outbreaks of silly vandalism, which reduce the effectiveness of the campaign. At the moment it’s spring, so there are nests all over the maunga full of vulnerable eggs and chicks, which the rats love to eat. So it’s particularly important we keep rat numbers down, and someone has just gone round taking out the traps and throwing them away. It’s very disappointing.”

It’s not all bad news. One of the trapping tunnels thrown off the cliff a few weeks ago eventually washed ashore on Motuihe Island, where it was found by a Department of Conservation (DoC) ranger. When he opened the tunnel, the trap was still inside with a dead rat in it. The trap has now been returned to Maungauika and, battered and slightly salty, is now back in action catching pests.

When not recovered, the traps are always

quickly replaced.

Katherine Lane, the DoC ranger who oversees the project, says that since the start of this year the 70 traps on the maunga have caught 98 mice and 40 rats.

The numbers caught from August to December last year, when the trapping began, haven’t been tallied up, but Eagles reckons in those early days “there were two, three or even four rats and a couple of mice every week. So I’d guess we’ve taken over a hundred rats off the hill since it started.”

Interestingly, in recent months the number of rats caught has fallen, while the number of mice has increased. Lane says this “indicates we’re getting on top of the rat numbers”.

Eagles also points to the fact that in recent months there have been more “big, old, cunning, battle-hardened rats being caught and a lot fewer young ones” as a further sign that the rat population is decreasing.

Another sign of success comes from the reports of locals who think bird numbers are up, says Lane. “Several members of the public have approached DoC staff at Maungauika recently saying that they have noticed more birds in their surrounding backyards and passing on their thanks to the team.”

Eagles says he and the volunteers he checks traps with are also convinced there are more birds around these days – especially natives like tui, kingfisher, waxeye, grey warbler and even kereru.

Got you… volunteer Jacqui Sizeland with a trapped North Head rat To try to get more solid evidence of the effect of the trapping, Restoring Takarunga Hauraki has started a twice-yearly Devonport-wide programme of 5 Minute Bird Counts (5MBC).

“We’ve only just done the second count and we don’t really have enough people involved yet,” says Eagles, “so it’s far too early to be sure of what’s happening. But my wife and I certainly thought the birdlife in the two areas on Maungauika we count had improved.”

Thank you Devonport Matt and I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone in Devonport who has given us the most wonderful farewell leading up to closing the Copy Shoppe after almost 20 years.

We have been absolutely blown away by all the generosity, kindness and support we have received in the last couple of weeks.

With all the flowers, gifts, cards, words of encouragement, hugs and even the tears, words cannot express what this has meant for us.

While our departure hasn’t been under circumstances we would have chosen, we are

Our house removal programme is going smoothly, with the first phase now complete and phase two well underway.

There’s been a lot of local interest in the removals, with photos and commentary online about the logistics of getting a whole house transported along suburban streets.

So far, we have moved 11 houses from Rutherford Street and these are now being used by new families in Opotiki, Swanson, Ararimu, Maungaturoto, Whangarei, Kaitaia, Ruakaka, Ramarama and Tauranga.

Phase two, which will continue until the end of this month, involves 17 houses being removed from Eversleigh Road, Lowe Street and the start of Hillary Crescent.

By the time you read this column, there should be just five left to go.

Security firm given a rocket over Mt Vic Guy Fawkes message A security firm is in the gun after it incorrectly advised the public that Takarunga/Mt Victoria was closed in the lead-up to Guy Fawkes Night.

Nick Turoa, Tu- puna Maunga Authority Operations Manager, said: “Neither Takarunga/Mt Victoria or any other maunga were closed to pedestrians on Guy Fawkes evening or the weekend leading up to it.

“The authority did engage additional security guards to actively patrol the maunga over the Guy Fawkes period and remind visitors that fireworks were banned on the maunga, as they are in parks, beaches and other public spaces under Auckland Council’s Public Safety and Nuisance by-law, he said.

“A miscommunication may have occurred where visitors were incorrectly advised by a security guard that the whole maunga was closed. We have raised this with the security firm,” Turoa added.

French music feast served up by Devonport Chamber Orchestra The Devonport Chamber Orchestra (DCO), led by Joseph Chen under conductor Timothy Carpenter, presented an exceptional concert on 4 November at Holy Trinity Church.

When Maia-Dean Martin was the soloist in Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with the DCO in 2016, her promise as a violinist was already evident. In the two years since, her development has been phenomenal.

In this concert she was soloist in Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole. Although Lalo was French, not Spanish, his writing has plenty of Spanish bravura and intensity. The soloist enters after a short introduction and Martin did so confidently and with assurance. Her impressive technique and rapid fingerwork seen in 2016 were even more polished.

Although labelled a symphony, this work is in fact a violin concerto in five dance movements.

There were contemplative and assertive passages for both soloist and orchestra. Martin revelled in the sultry, seductive and sensuous dances – looking very much the Spanish dancer herself. The richness of tone she engendered from her lower strings was very special.

The orchestra, with larger numbers in all sections, made a richly intense sound. This was a mature performance with obvious rapport between conductor and soloist. The orchestra rose to the challenges of a complex orchestral

score providing effective collaboration with the soloist.

Martin’s full-blooded, virtuosic reading brought her a standing ovation and she generously responded with the andante from one of JS Bach’s partitas for solo violin.

Debussy’s Petite Suite opened the concert.

An early work of four pieces, written for fourhands on piano and orchestrated by Henri-Paul Besser, it is a real orchestral treasure. The four pieces are of quite different inspiration. The first, En Bateau (In a Boat) suggests the rise and fall of a boat on the water, with impressive work from flutes and other woodwind instruments.

Cortège was rather more jocular than the funeral procession implied by its name. The Minuet, with its wistful first violins and sensuous cor anglais, led into Ballet, with energetic strings tossing themes to the woodwinds.

Carpenter’s clear conducting style allowed individual melodies to penetrate the orchestral lines. It was rollicking great fun for the larger than usual orchestra and its audience.

20 years ago from the Flagstaff files • Up to 20 America’s Cup superyacht berths are to be offered up by Babcocks.

• DoC makes moves to repair North Head in preparation for America’s Cup racing.

It is estimated more than $60,000 will be spent repairing slips and other areas of the mountain.

• A fire burns down Old Joe’s house in Church St. But owner/developer Xeno Captain claims it is the start of new problems. The fire was one of the largest house blazes seen on the North Shore, according to firefighters. It damaged a number of neighbouring houses. Heritage campaigners are appalled at the loss of the prominent building.

• Government emails to Conservation Minister Simon Upton on the 11 hectare Tamaki land at Narrow Neck have been “massaged” to suit the direction of senior management,” according to evidence presented to the High Court in the fight to keep the land as a reserve.

The Crown has been moving to sell the land.

• A Devonport-led team is building a children’s hospital in the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar. The team includes John Shanahan, Doug Connelly and Barry George.

• A revised plan for the marina village planned at Bayswater is to be presented to the public in December. The initial proposals include a basement carpark for around 845 cars, 80 to 105 residential townhouses and apartments, a ferry terminal, retail and office space, a village square and a large 3400 sqm club and accommodation building.

• A four-bedroom house with a twobedroom granny flat in Lytton St is for sale for $348,000.

• Hamish Allison is awarded a merit

World War 1 100-year anniversary commemoration A crowd of more than 100 people turned out at the Devonport war memorial last Sunday to mark 100 years since the end of World War 1.

In nearby Windsor Reserve, a field of remembrance included crosses to honour the 212 Devonport residents who lost their lives in the war between 1914 and 1918.

Devonport-Takapuna Local Board chair George Wood said 100 years ago, Devonport was the main centre on the North Shore and many people from the area had enlisted to fight.

The number of crosses that have been placed around the country to commemorate the end of hostilities show the price New Zealand had paid in the First World War. It is important for current New Zealanders to remember how lucky we are to be born in more peaceful times, he said.

Meanwhile at Holy Trinity Church…they made some noise Holy Trinity Church took part in a nationwide roaring chorus to mark the armistice centenary.

At 11am on 11 November 1918, after four years of conflict, the First World War came to an end.

When news of the armistice reached New Zealand, it was met with widespread thanksgiving, celebration and a lot of noise.

One hundred years on, a two-minute silence was observed at Holy Trinity at 11am to acknowledge the immense loss and hardship endured throughout the war.

Following this,‘instruments’ that churchgoers had at hand helped create a roaring chorus of sound, celebrating peace and hope for the future.

Suffrage event To celebrate 125 years of women having the vote in New Zealand, the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom will be holding an event at Devonport Library on 25 November.

On 28 November 1893, 82 per cent of eligilble female voters went to the polls for the first time. A historic wooden engraving records women gathered outside the Devonport Borough Council Chambers to vote for the very first time.

Retirement-village life gets the Roger Hall treatment ‘Is it your bid, dear?’ ‘Who dealt?’ It’s bridge afternoon at the fictitious Cambridge Retirement Village, in Company Theatre’s production of Roger Hall’s new play, Last Legs.

Hall has created six very different Kiwi characters, who each tell their story as to how they ended up at the Cambridge.

The play was a sell-out in 2016 in Christchurch, and had a successful season last year in Auckland. The production at the Rose Centre, directed by Sian Davis (in her 12th production for Company Theatre), is selling fast as well.

What do the characters get up to in their new life at the retirement village? Trish (played by Lynn Webster) will tell you that it’s a wonderful place, with an indoor pool, spa and gymnasium; Edna (Dianne Lamont) will tell you that she sold her Devonport villa to move in here but is now secretly worried she may have been a bit hasty in that decision; Garry (Max Golding) used to be in real estate but was convinced by his children to cash up and give some money to them; dejected and sad Helena (Sue Golding), warns that when you’re young the older man can seem quite worldly and experienced, but now dreads the final years ahead, nursing a much older man through bedpans and incontinence pads.
