Street fight leaves boy with broken jaw

A 14-year-old boy was left unconscious with a broken jaw after a fight in Devonport, following a prank that turned sour.

A 17-year-old local teenager has been charged with an assault that is believed to have been triggered by a prank on his friend’s car.

Police have confirmed that Year 9 Takapuna Grammar School (TGS) student Harrison Living suffered a broken jaw after being punched with a closed fist on the side of the face in a Devonport street.

Harrison was rendered unconscious from the blow and spent several days in hospital.

Harrison’s father David told the Flagstaff: “It was a serious incident and I am glad that someone has been charged.”

The Flagstaff understands that the incident occurred after a group of 14-year-olds spray-

painted the car of the alleged attacker’s friend, another TGS student. The incident occurred on Wednesday October 29 on Abbotsford Terrace.

Takapuna Grammar principal Simon Lamb said: “I am aware of a Year 9 boy who has been assaulted by an older boy. This incident has occurred out of school and the police are involved.

“I have been in contact with the family of the victim and we have offered our concern and support to them,” Lamb said.

• Luke Daniel Bassani Theuma from Bayswater, currently a Year 12 TGS student, has been charged with injuring with intent to injure.

He did not enter a plea at the first North Shore District Court hearing last Wednesday.

The charge has a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment.

Support streams in for local girl with bone cancer Elizabeth Moataane has had her life turned upside down for a second time by cancer.

When the 15-year-old Takapuna Grammar student went to see the doctor with a sore knee that wouldn’t get better, she was diagnosed with a tumour in the joint and an MRI scan found the cancer had spread into her lungs.

The second eldest child in a family of nine, Elizabeth was also hit hard in 2009 when her mother Tangi was diagnosed with leukaemia three years after the Catholic family arrived in New Zealand from Tonga.

Neighbour and family friend Lynda Taylor said Elizabeth has had surgery to her knee and

started chemotherapy last Monday.

Taylor is inviting the community to a “Dance for Elizabeth” social evening with a DJ playing 60s and 70s music on Saturday November 15 starting at 7:30 pm at Allen Hill Stadium, 27 Lake Road. Tickets are $15 per person and $30 for a family. A T-Shirt signed by Valerie Adams will be raffled and one signed by the All Whites one is being auctioned on Trade Me. “We are still looking for help with catering, prizes or hanging up posters and things,” says Taylor.

Chemical weed-spraying on Vauxhall Road sports field was stopped by community activists – only 12 hours before it was scheduled to begin.

Standing next to the field, four Cheltenham residents had pleaded with officials for over an hour on Thursday afternoon to call off the spraying with herbicide Glyphosade (also known as Roundup) planned for 6.30 am the next morning.

Lake Road at a standstill... for another 10 years The promised $50 million-plus earmarked for Lake Rd improvements is off the table for at least the next 10 years.

That is what the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board was told by Roger Wilson, Auckland Transport (AT) manager when he presented an early draft of the Regional Land Transport Programme for 2015 – 2018 to board members last Tuesday.

It also seems that any further upgrades to Devonport Wharf (the work on the first third is now under way) will be unbudgeted as well.

Asked by perplexed board member Dianne Hale why she couldn’t see anything relating to Lake Road on the proposed three-year project list, Wilson replied: “The blunt reality is that Lake Road as a major project is not in the ten-year plan.”

(RLTP) lists all the planned transport activities for the next three years and is used to prioritise applications for government funding through the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA).

For the people who need to access Lake Rd to get to their homes and businesses and schools it would be a bitter blow if he did a U-turn on his undertaking to put this long-standing congestion problem right.”

“I will be seeking an appointment with Mayor Brown to clarify the position,” Barry said.

Devonport-Takapuna Local Board member Dianne Hale told a board workshop: “Ideally we would like to ban them but we can’t. We can’t effectively issue a blanket ban but must take a pragmatic approach,” she says.

Board member Joseph Bergin agreed. “If we make this policy any more prohibitive, it will be challenged by the psychoactive substance industry and we will end up in court

He said they would be funded from “separate buckets” that were designed for much smaller projects than those on the list.

When challenged by Hale who said, “So you will just do bits and bobs to keep people quiet,” Wilson said AT was merely trying to achieve an outcome with cheaper options due to council’s overall drastic budget cuts.

Those budget cuts mean that not even the projects identified on the programme had secured funding, he said. “There will be a red line somewhere across this list and we don’t know yet where it will be,” he said.

Projects on the list include Park and Ride at the Bayswater ferry area and further work on the Devonport ferry terminal.

However, Devonport might stand up and fight again, said Hale. “We have had a very active response against legal highs once before. Hopefully our community will speak up again against these products being sold.”

“Plus, I think places like Peaches and Cream will think very hard about setting up in Devonport because of the way the community rose up in the past and made outlets very uncomfortable,” she said.

Restrictions on legal highs The Draft Local Approved Product Policy proposes restrictions to the issuing of licences to sell across most of Auckland. Licences will NOT be granted: • within 500 metres of an intermediate or high school, mental health or addiction treatment centre, or an existing psychoactive substances retail licensee • within 200 metres of a primary school • in neighbourhood centres such as the Vauxhall Shops or Kings Stores • in areas of “high deprivation”

The result of our campaign in 2011 was clear: the community did not want the drugs sold in our area and voted with its feet, boycotting dairies that sold them.

But the whole nature of the legal-high industry has been to slide beneath the law and create

an addicted market.

Products tend to morph and change and although the new legislation will make them safer I am unconvinced they will add anything to our community and quite likely could cause harm.

Kids marathon a breeze second year in row for Lola Vauxhall School student Lola Wood (9) won her age division at the Auckland Kids Marathon for a second year in a row last week.

She took the title ahead of 387 other year seven to nine-year-old girls.

The Kids Marathon was run over a course of 2.2 km on the same day as the Auckland Marathon. Lola completed the distance in 9.16 minutes.

In the lead-up to the day, all children were required to run 4 km a week for ten weeks, clocking up the full distance of 42.2 km in the end.

One of Lola’s running buddies at Vauxhall School was Charlie Glass (11), who was 21st overall with a time of 8.41 minutes. Lucy Brick came 10th in the ages 10–13 girls division. In all, 1,226 primary and intermediate schoolchildren took part in the event.

Lola says she is a regular runner and likes to run on her own in the mornings. Charlie runs with his dad Paul three times a week, as well as on his own. “I go up and down North Head,” he says.

Art festival star at The Vic

A graffiti artwork planned for the wall of the historic Victoria Theatre is now hanging from the front of the theatre instead.

Auckland Council ruled that Devonport Arts Festival organisers needed resource consent for an artist to paint the graffiti onto the wall of the Grade 1 listed Historic Building.

Victoria Theatre Trust co-chair Margot McRae said the artist Sparrow Philips had produced the art on canvas and it would hang from the front facade of the Vic, weather permitting.”

“It will be securely fastened to existing struts on the building but we will take it down if it gets too windy.

“The council said the Unitary Plan rules, although they haven’t yet been approved are operative, and they are more strict about any changes to an original surface of a protected heritage building. So we didn’t go ahead with the idea to paint it directly on the side wall,” McRae said.

Public feedback kept secret by AT A closed meeting on public feedback to the proposed bus shelter outside the Devonport ferry building was held last week.

The secrecy has been questioned by Devonport-Takapuna Local Board chair Mike Cohen.

Five months ago Auckland Transport (AT) had asked for submissions from locals on four last-minute design changes they proposed to the Marine Square development under way.

These included a 50-metre-long glass and metal bus shelter outside the Devonport ferry terminal, a new canopy on the western side of the wharf, the canopy above the existing terminal entrance to be removed and changes to pedestrian flows.

In September, after months of silence on the results of this consultation, the DevonportTakapuna Local Board demanded an urgent meeting with AT to be informed on the outcome of the public consultation.

That meeting was finally held last Tuesday,

but AT had requested that the public and the press be excluded.

After the meeting, local board Chair Mike Cohen said he struggled to see the reason for the secrecy of the meeting. “I can’t see why it was confidential,” he said.

“Probably in the short term nothing is happening on Marine Square other than what people can see now. Other projects are not progressing at this stage,” he said.

Cohen said there was a need to clarify the rationale for decision making around something like the bus shelter in the future, and said the local board should be involved from the start next time.

Some of the construction on Marine Square has fallen behind since June, but the wait on the consultation results does not seem to be related.

Auckland Transport did not respond to Flagstaff questions on the issue.

The Vic branches out into Didas The Vic Theatre is expanding operations by moving into the theatre’s adjoining bar area when Dida’s vacates on November 17.

The theatre’s operator Philipp Jaser is excited about the move and sees it as a great opportunity to improve the offering for Vic audiences.

The area will continue to operate as a bar at night but Jaser also plans a gelato bar and a cinema food menu that will include light meals and desserts.

“The bar area will add a valuable and complementary social space to the Vic and

will also improve the foyer area by relieving the bottleneck situation when we have big crowds,” he says.

The doors between the two areas will be opened and people will be able to move freely between the foyer and the bar.

The Victoria Theatre Trust supports the expansion and co-chair Margot McRae says it is a great step forward for the Vic. “We are now planning the restoration and improvements of the downstairs area and having a single operator will make it so much easier,” she said.

Walking tall – Village Shoes gets spring in its step

Devonport Village Shoes, thought to be the oldest shop in the town, has been saved from closure.

Stocks had been dwindling to end-of-line levels and the lease for the store - believed to have been operating in the main street of Devonport for around 70 years – was all that was being sold off.

However Gill Austin and Bruce Wilson, Devonport residents and retailers for 25 years, stepped into the breach and bought the shop.

Wilson has owned the Video store in Clarence St over that time.

Austin said: “We love Village Shoes… for years we have bought our shoes there and our children’s shoes there and we were sad to see the shoe shop in the doldrums.

“It has been at the heart of Devonport since the Thompsons set it up many decades ago.

“We have faith in this shop and intend to restore it to its former glory. We want local residents to be able to buy the shoes they need close to home,” she said.

“We would like to keep the ‘village’ feel of our wonderful seaside suburb and see High Street shopping as a part of that.”

Village Shoes had also been well partronised by tourists over the years.

“We have lots of new stock arriving in store and we are bringing in new lines and old favourites.”

The store aims to start restocking men’s shoes in the next couple of months.

Part of the attraction for the bare bathers was perhaps the fact that sea life were their only up-close spectators. Togs were taken off in the water at the race start and transported by IRB to the finish, where the

naked cohort put them on for the run up the beach. First birthday-suit winner home was Ben Marshall, while Natasha Turner was was first female home.

Just over 200 competitors swam the event, with Brent Foster first male home, Rebecca Clarke the first female finisher and Michael Worsfold the first junior.

A brief history of Stanley Bay Astronomical Society. In New Zealand in July 1840, Lt-Governor William Hobson sent him to Akaroa to establish British authority there before some French settlers arrived. Owen Stanley performed that delicate mission successfully, establishing good relations between the British Government and the French settlers.

Then Hobson decided to abandon the capital Russell, which he had started in the Bay of Islands, and to create a capital at Tamaki Isthmus, and he sent Owen Stanley to survey the site for Auckland. Captain Stanley produced an excellent chart of Waitemata Harbour with many soundings of depth in fathoms (1 fathom =1.8288 metres), and hence a prominent peninsula was named Stanley Point.

The shipping route from eastern Australia through the Great Barrier Reef and Torres Strait was initially very dangerous, with no adequate charts. Consequently, in 1846 Cap-

Many people will share his annoyance at that arrogant bureaucratic behaviour.

It is worth remembering the reason why Stanley Point was given that name, which led to the area around Stanley Point Road becoming known (unofficially) as Stanley Bay. Following on from Captain James Cook (Fellow of the Royal Society of London), several Royal Navy captains with strong scientific interests came to New Zealand, including Captain Owen Stanley (1811-1850). Stanley’s extensive experience of surveying and charting coasts in many places around the world led to his elections as Fellow of the Royal Society of London, and as Fellow of the Royal

Young Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895) was the junior surgeon, and his studies of jellyfish on that voyage established his as a major scientist.

In 1850 Owen Stanley discovered the large mountain range in New Guinea which got named after him, and then he returned to Sydney with his charts, which made the Torres Strait route much safer for ships. A few hours after reaching Sydney, Captain Owen Stanley died in the arms of Huxley, and he was given a State Funeral.

Blowtorch on all projects in face of funding pressure As the former chair of the DevonportTakapuna Local Board, I lobbied successfully to secure the $50m plus for improving Lake Rd and I’m putting up my case again through the ten-year budget review process now underway.

As you previously reported, studies are finally proceeding to inform the Corridor Management Plan. From that we will be better placed to make a call on solutions.

The city is under intense funding pressure and like most ratepayers I’ve got no appetite for hefty rates increases and rising debt. The blowtorch is on all project budgets and Lake Rd is no exception.

Ideally improvements to Lake Road will make it through the budget process but I strongly encourage people to support my endeavours by making submissions on the council’s draft budget proposals when released for feedback at year’s end.

I’m working with Auckland Transport on

some innovative ways to improve what we have – for example, better sequencing of traffic lights across the whole of the Esmonde Rd/Lake Rd route. Initial discussions have canvassed ideas for trialling new technologies like in-ground dynamic LED lane markings capable of changing lane configurations as demand changes.

Government is rightly demanding we get smarter about our spend and make more efficient use of existing road corridors, before committing it’s share of scarce transport funding.

So council has to sharpen its act on all fronts.

The days of relying on property rates to fund a multi-billion transport project deficit are coming to a close. In the coming months council will begin a discussion with Aucklanders on alternative funding for transport.

I’m of the view that that’s our future, not rates reliance.

I have watched the new Devonport library being built and am wondering why it is so big.

Auckland libraries are increasing the number and availability of electronic books, and are actively encouraging their patrons to read them. This must mean that libraries need to be smaller not bigger. What is going to happen to

Dear C. M. Armstrong (Letters October 17), The Woolly Tree has been installed now; it was commissioned by The Devonport Arts Festival after all.

I know that we don’t have the same opinion about my woolly art installations, however I know that they have made so many people happy and that is why I make them. I also know that creating these pieces – knowing that they will spread joy – is very therapeutic for many of the contributors. I wish that you could have seen the lady who made her pieces sitting by the bed of her dying grandson. Or the mother who patiently taught her daughter to knit because she wanted to have a piece on the tree. Or the young lady who is severely depressed but finds peace of mind by taking part in these installations.

I suggest that you go down to The Woolly Tree, sit on a nearby park bench and watch people’s reactions to the tree. I hope their joy will affect you and make you smile. If you like, I’m happy to meet you there and share some more stories. I would be very happy if you could take a good look at the tree – there is a message for you there.

the surplus space? Auckland Council is looking at ways to trim their budget and one of the options is to reduce the number of hours libraries are open. Common sense will tell one that the surplus space would generate an income if it was leased out. Surely this must be the intention of Auckland Council. Otherwise, why build libraries bigger than needed? It would be a great shame for this to happen as libraries are for the community and must remain so.

On another matter, one wet morning last week I arrived in Devonport by ferry. The new deck, by the pontoon where the Devonport ferry berths, was slippery. To such an extent I watched a young boy running and sliding on the slippery surface. What action is Auckland Transport going to take to prevent an accident?

I am recovering from a broken leg and am well aware of the danger of slippery surfaces.

The workmanship on this construction is very poor indeed. Every screw head is rounded off and the screws are askew. Is the quality of the building on the wharf checked? It appears not.

It should be better.

Langdon a custodian of photographic history

Peter Langdon is the great-grandson of James Foy, one of the two Foy Brothers whose 1870s’ photographic portraits of Maori became the inspiration for many of many Gottfried Lindauer’s paintings. Last month, Langdon helped farewell the brothers’ photograph of Pare Watene to the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin, where it will be part of Lindauer’s first-ever overseas exhibition. He spoke to Maire Vieth.

When Peter Langdon inherited a pile of old photographs from his “Auntie Clare” in 1959, he didn’t initially realise what a treasure had been passed on to him. Clara Ellen Foy was a daughter of James Joseph Foy who, along with his older brother Joseph Michael Foy, set up as a photographer in Thames during the 1870s.

The 42 postcard-sized cabinet photographs were studio portraits of Maori. He later bought another three on Trade Me. “I knew that my great-grandfather took the photographs and that Gottfried Lindauer used them to do his paintings, but I underestimated their significance until recently,” Langdon admits.

When Auckland Art Gallery set up the www.lindaueronline.co.nz website in 2010, Langdon was invited to a launch ceremony at the Awataha Marae in Northcote. He was also asked to speak to the Christchurch Art Gallery about their collection. Since then a curator of the Nationalgalerie im Hamburger Bahnhof sent Langdon an email asking to borrow a photo for a show of 48 Lindauer portraits this month in Berlin. Langdon’s small inheritance became a matter of important historical significance at the photograph’s farewell to Berlin. “The great-grandson of Gottfried Lindauer was there and I was talking to the great-granddaughter of

Artistic legacy… Peter Langdon with a photo that inspired Lindauer Pare Watene. It was hugely moving. My sister Francis, brother Mark and Mark’s daughter were there. We had generations,” he says. Along with the Foy photograph, 48 Lindauer paintings will be exhibited outside of New Zealand for the first time.

Langdon says he initially thought of the photographs as his own. “But as I have gotten older and as I have realised how important they are, I now regard myself as their custodian,” he says.

It is Lindauer who made them famous. The professional painter was born in Bohemia in 1839 and came to New Zealand in 1874 to escape being drafted into the Austrian military.

Like C.F. Goldie, he painted commissioned portraits of prominent Maori chiefs, detailing their facial tattoos, traditional clothing and weaponry.

One of Lindauer’s best known works is Ana Reupene Whetuki and Child, which portrays a woman carrying an infant on her back. It is based on a Foy Brothers photograph.

Thanks to Clare Foy, the collection of her father’s photographs survived. A sister of Peter Langdon’s paternal grandmother, Louise Foy, she helped care for Peter’s father, Jack Langdon. She also looked after Peter and Francis in 1950 when their mother had a long hospital recovery after giving birth to their brother Marc.

November 14 2014 Clare Foy spent her last years living with the Langdon family.

In his professional life, Peter Langdon has dealt with matters of life, illness and death as well. The Takapuna-based lawyer was born in Wellington but grew up in Rotorua before the family moved to Te Aroha. “My father was a district public trustee for the Public Trust, then a government department, so we shifted around.”

In 1962, aged 19, Peter Langdon came to Auckland, unsure about what to do with his life.

“I had studied sciences all through school and was going to be a pilot. In my last year I went for a test for the RNZAF and they found that I was colour-blind in red. So I suddenly couldn’t fly and didn’t know what to do,” he says.

His father got him a job at the Public Trust.

Peter liked the work and signed up to study law part time at Auckland University. “I kept working full time on Albert St and some days I walked up and down to university two or three times for classes. I struggled and if I had my life over again I would never do that again. It was tough,” he says.

Work at the Public Trust was demanding for a 19-year-old. Langdon administered estates of people who were deceased or had been committed to a mental asylum. The Mental Health Act of the time gave the assets of anyone committed to a mental asylum to the Public Trust to be administered. “It was compulsory, a pretty grim and intrusive thing to do,” says Langdon who remembers regularly going out to the psychiatric ward of Oakley [later Carrington] Hospital at Point Chevalier, to inform patients of their financial situation. “People were just zonked out, high on drugs and walking around in a daze,” he says. The building had opened in 1867, was reconstructed after an 1877 fire and is today part of the Unitec campus.

In 1963, Langdon administered the deceased estate of Detective Sergeant Neville Power (25) who was killed by a sniper while attending a shooting on Bethells Road. Power’s partner was also killed and the case led to the formation of the Police Armed Offenders Squad a year later.

Langdon met his wife, Dorothy Gallagher, at a Junior National Party party. “We weren’t members but we used to just go to the parties,” he says. When Dot took off to travel overseas, Langdon shifted to Christchurch where he continued his law degree and kept working for the Public Trust.

It wasn’t a productive move, he says. “I played up and barely got my minimum units and three years later I got a promotion back to Auckland. Dot came back and we got back together, got engaged and married and I pulled my socks up and finally got my degree after that,” he says.

After stints at Chapman Tripp and Davenport, Buxton and Gibson, he set up a private practice.

Since his days at the Public Trust, Langdon become an expert in wills and estates, but his current practice, Langdon and Co, deals with other legal matters as well.

“Working with wills and estates, you see the worst side of people because they are grieving.

Sometimes families fall out in bitter acrimony arguing about who gets the furniture when the estate is worth a substantial amount,” he says.

Langdon says getting a ‘legal warrant of fitness’ every five years is a good idea and has a personal story about how enduring power of attorney and a will can come in handy.

Four years ago, he had a sore ankle after jogging in front of the Wii in the morning. During his workday, the pain grew and Langdon decided to visit a doctor. “I saw Helen Shrimpton who was a locum at Devonport Medical Centre.

I had recently met her socially. She said, ‘You are not the Peter I met two weeks ago’ and sent me straight off to hospital, which saved my life,” he says.

Langdon was suffering from necrotizing fasciitis, a flesh-eating disease that rapidly takes hold of the body. “I was in an induced coma for nine days, nearly died twice and had to stay in hospital for six weeks, and off work for a couple of months,” he says.

He takes comfort in the fact that his legal matters were in order. “People could make decisions for me and knew what I wanted if I died, which I nearly did,” he says. The origin of the infection was never confirmed, but Langdon thinks he got it from gardening in a new greenhouse in bare feet and without a mask.

Flesh-eating bugs aside, Langdon, at 71, is an active man. He gardens, returned from the gym just before our interview and likes to play golf. He has always been sporty. A “reasonable runner” in his youth, he won his school steeplechase in 1960.

He admits to slacking off during his twenties.

“I was going to ask Peter Snell’s coach Arthur Lydiard to train me, but then I got into drinking and smoking and girls and nothing ever came of it,” he says.

In the 1970s, Langdon started playing tennis and squash. He became president of Vauxhall Tennis and Squash Club in the 1980s, and was on the committee that saved the club from financial ruin and helped build a third squash court.

“I stopped playing squash because I started running marathons and couldn’t do both without pulling muscles,” Langdon says. He was 40 at the time, and subsequently ran six Rotorua Marathons.

When triathlons were the new thing, he got into that. “From not being able to swim two lengths of the pool, I ended up doing two Auckland Ironman, in 1989 and 1990,” he says.

He also became president of North Harbour Triathlon Club.

He changed up a gear when he turned 50. “I lost interest in triathlons when they became too organised and lost their sense of adventure. In 1994, I did the Coast to Coast,” he says.

Langdon is committed to Devonport. He has lived here all his married life - 38 years. He has four grandchildren enrolled at Devonport Primary School. “I think it’s because Dot and I resolved to stay and educate our boys in one place. It worked. They went to Vauxhall Primary, Belmont Intermediate, Takapuna Grammar, and went overseas for a while, but came back and now live within metres of us with their families,” he says.

Michael has followed in his father’s footsteps and works as a lawyer, while Stephen is a professional photographer, like his great-great grandfather.

Family focused childcare

Devonport Methodist Childcare Centre has just completed a massive renovation, which has enabled them to extend their licence for up to 60 children. The centre is now taking enrolments for 2015.

Centre Director Sandra Jane places a lot of emphasis on supporting the entire family and working alongside them to ensure needs are met, and we all become “one big DMCC family”.

Established in 1991, the centre is located down the driveway of the Methodist Church on Owens Road. The centre caters for children aged 3 months to 6 years and also offers an OSCAR programme for schoolchildren, for before and after-school care.

The rooms of the centre are based on the life cycle of a butterfly and are separated according to age, with Caterpillars (Under 2s), Chrysalises (2 -3 yrs old), Junior Butterflies (over 3s) and onto the Butterfly room (from aged 4 till school).

With newly refurbished cot room, children’s toilet blocks, kitchen and new office, the centre has been totally transformed. The outdoor areas – various playgrounds and a grassed adventure playground known as the Secret Garden have also been upgraded and beautified. New flooring and heating systems, along with windows letting more light in, have completed the picture.

Centre Director Sandra Jane comments: “The childcare centre has been upgraded and refurbished, but it has retained its core: the focus on family”.

“We have never been a corporate day care and have always encouraged parents to be involved in a family-orientated environment”.

“A lot of our DMCC families do not have the luxury of extended family support (i.e grandparents) close at hand, so we make sure they have that support here.”

Numerous family and parents events are held over the course of a year, such as coffee mornings for new parents with siblings at DMCC, free babysitting nights, Fathers’ Day, Mothers’ Day, time out for the

parents at Quiz Night, and of course the Christmas party to foster friendships and a sense of community.

“We also provide extra curriculum opportunities for our children, and day trips throughout the year.”

As children finish their time at DMCC, they have an official graduation ceremony where they are capped before they continue their education journey at school.

Photos of prior graduates line the walls of the centre, which maintains an average of 90% registered teaching staff.

There is also a chef on-site who makes nourishing meals with emphasis on fresh produce for the children.

Stephen McCarthy, whose daughter Addison attends, says: “We love this place – it’s really good. It has great family events at Christmas and Fathers’ Day and other times of the year.”

Stephen said it was especially handy that Addison’s elder school-age brother Sam could go to the centre during school holidays, which “cuts down driving for parents”.

Barracks makeover marches forward

Seven weeks in, the restoration of two Fort Takapuna barracks and their conversion into community spaces is on track to be completed by next March.

Seven layers of paint have been removed from exterior rimu weatherboards, old linoleum has been lifted from the matai floors inside, ceilings have been exposed, added walls have been removed, a new roof has been installed and the two front porches are about to be rebuilt, including state-of-the art disabled access.

Architect Antony Matthews says much of the $800,000 construction budget has gone into the invisible new foundations.

“As we are going back to some of the building’s original open-plan layout, a big part of our job is redoing the foundations to increase their capacity,” he says.

Auckland Council project manager Sharla Vijayaratnam says the restoration is on schedule and well within its overall budget of $1.5 million. The centenary celebrations next year have been a key driver for the timing of the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board project and the construction has been very straightforward, she says.

Local Fort Takapuna custodian Mike Pritchard says the barracks are situated on the spot where the stables of Robert Adam Mosely Stark’s 28-acre property were located in the 1880s. The government took the property from him in 1885 to use for defence purposes during the “Russian scare.”

They have served many purposes over time, says Pritchard. “They were home to the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps during the 1940s, refugee housing in the 1950s, housed the Women’s Auxiliary Corps and altered for the Navy in the 1960s, who sort of turned them into a boat, with a Cox’s Office and things like that,” he says.

Bayswater Halloween bike ride goes off like a rocket More than 500 people took part in the second Bayswater Halloween Bike and Ride event – more than double last year’s turnout.

“In our first year, we expected around 40 and got about 200. This year, we expected 200 and got 543,” says Devonport Community Coordinator Maria Teape, who helped organise the event.

The walk-and-ride treasure hunt started off at Bayswater Park, went past O’Neill’s Cemetery across the new Northboro Bridge Point and along the foreshore all the way to

the Northboro Reserve Playground.

Young sailors Peter and Tony Blake immortalised in fiction A young Peter Blake and his brother Tony feature in a fictional story about a schoolboy’s sailing adventure, which is included in a new book by former Devonport resident Tessa Duder.

In the book Out on the Water: Twelve Tales of the Sea,“Two brothers” is the story of Peter Blake and his younger brother Tony in the 1950s, going to Bayswater School and heading down to the Takapuna Yacht Club in the afternoon for a sail in their dinghy Zeddie.

“The elder was tall for his age, with fair hair he liked to wear longer than generally allowed at school. The younger was average height, a wiry child, but stronger than he looked,” writes Duder.

The yacht club was walking distance from the Blake family’s home and their mother watched her sons through binoculars as they crossed the harbour and capsized.

“Tessa’s book celebrates all aspects of sailing and messing about in boats for kids – from Opti racing in the current day to migrating to New Zealand in sailing ships in the 19th century,” says Oratia Media publisher Peter Dowling.

Duder has written more than 40 books, including a biography of Margaret Mahy.

The graduating class of 2014 Senior Prize-giving was a wonderful celebration for more than 200 recipients of awards from Years 11 – 13. It was also a celebration of success by teachers in various categories.

There are a growing number of awards for staff. The Staff Travel Award has been presented every year since 1996. This year it has gone to Mr David Stent, HOD Music, who will use the grant to travel to China to investigate aspects of music teaching there.

A relatively new award is the H. C. Hulme Memorial Prize for a teacher who has contributed most significantly to the cocurricular programmes in the school. Harold Charles Hulme was an early pupil at Takapuna Grammar, who died of his wounds on

Crete in the Second World War, aged 27. Mr “TGS Football”, and the International Baccalaureate CAS co-ordinator, Mr Steve Smith has won this for 2014.

Students get to vote for an outstanding teacher to assist the Board of Trustees with selecting “The Staff Award”. By the level of applause the recipient, Mr Dave Thrasher, was a very popular choice. Harcourts Cooper & Co, through Phil Clark and Peter Ayton, have added a new prize called “Service to teaching” and again the recipient, Maths teacher, Mr Paul Joseph, was a well received announcement.

Basil out of frame in Fawlty Towers set building Members of Company Theatre have been hard at work constructing the most complicated set in its 30-year history.

There must be nothing faulty in the Rose Centre set if the actors are to survive the upcoming production of More Fawlty Towers intact.

Local builder Phil Davis and a construction team of 12 volunteers have spent two weekends building a double-storey hotel, strong enough to hold a cast of 20.

Following the success of three episodes of the much-loved sitcom in 2012, Company Theatre is presenting ATouch of Class, Basil the Rat, and The Kipper and the Corpse at the Rose Centre from 15-29 November.

Ian and Kate Birch, who live in Bayswater, appear as husband and wife Mr and Mrs Watson in A Touch of Class and Mr and Mrs White in The Kipper and the Corpse. The pair immigrated to New Zealand three years ago from the UK – where they were actively involved in amateur dramatics – and have thrown themselves into the production. Ian was heard to comment that although he had been involved in constructing many sets back in England, none of them were anywhere near as complicated as this one.

Gib stopping finishes – what are they ? What should I have?

Do you have to do Gib stopping if using wallpaper?

There are different levels of Gib stopping finishes for the various end products desired.

For example, if you have a painted wall that is going to be in an area with what is called ‘critical lighting conditions’ or the area is having either a gloss or smooth finish, then a ‘Level 5’ Gib stopping finish would be required to ensure the painted wall looks its best. A ‘Level 5’ finish is the optimum level for a premium paint finish.

There are 5 levels of Gib stopping.

Level 1 is used for temporary construction only or when the final finish is not decided.

Level 2 -3 is used for attics, garages etc where the appearance is not a major concern.

Level 4 & 5 is what most homeowners would require in their houses.

With Levels 4 & 5 all joints and interior angles have tape embedded into the joint compound prior to subsequent coats. Level 4 would then have a minimum of two topcoats plaster and be sanded

smooth and sealed prior to paint or wallpaper being applied. This is required for flat or low-sheen finishes and for lightly textured wallpapers. Level 5 has an additional thin coat of plaster to ensure a very smooth surface.

If wallpaper has been stripped off and the wall is going to be re-wallpapered or repainted, it will need to be gib stopped to either a Level 4 or 5 finish, depending on the end product desired. Also of wallpaper is going on new gib board areas, it will also need to be gib stopped first.

Patch Gib stopping may also be required prior to repainting walls that have dents in them etc.

What started as a bit of fun at the Devonport Community Garden for artist Penny Clark bloomed into a spectular exhibition at Mt Cambria park as part the Devonport Arts Festival.

Clark, who lives around the corner from the park, visited the garden every Wednesday afternoon over a year and painted the changes occuring.

The result was Art and Two Veg, comprising around 35 works, “which were a bit of fun and outside of what I’m usually doing,” said Clark.

Out of the square and into the forest

Nikau Forest Glass… wine glasses by Peter Raos A glass artist since 1979, Peter Raos is exhibiting at the Depot for the first time as part of the Out Of the Square works by 19 artists.

Nikau Forest Glass – groves of six glasses – were also produced by Raos to mark Conservation Week and highlight the threat to

New Zealand’s native forests.

“I chose nikau, a symbol of our native forest, because it echoes the shape of old English wine glasses and the colour of medieval forest glass.” Huge amounts of wood were needed to fire furnaces to make the glass

and it was one of the industries that caused the mass loss of European forests.

Raos said he had enjoyed being part of the group art exhibition as “art can be lonely.”

He was pleased Devonport Arts Festival had been given a new lease of life.
