Another ton’s up for multi-talented local stalwart Ben Wall is such a versatile sportsman he played every position in well over 100 games for North Shore United football premiers – even a few games at goalkeeper.

And last weekend marked another milestone for the allrounder: he kept wicket for North Shore Cricket premiers against Howick/ Pakuranga at Lloyd Elsmore Park in his 100th game for the side.

Wall (29) is Devonport “born and bred” and started playing football and cricket for the local teams aged about five.

He took up wicketkeeping at around age 10 after a stint playing softball “so I knew how to catch”.

He attended Westlake Boys High, where he had the stunning record of playing first XI cricket, first XI football and first XV rugby.

At 17, he was playing for the local premier teams in both cricket and football.

In football, “I started up front and moved through every position… I played nine games in goal for them.” He also scored around 65 goals.

He played 147 games for the team, “finishing up” when he was about 25, to concentrate more on cricket. He played a season of cricket in London for Ickenham.

Wall made the Auckland under-15 and under-17 cricket teams but “didn’t kick on”.

But he’s more than happy with the successes he’s had with local sides.

“In footie one of the highlights was getting promotion from division two to division one in a team with a lot of Shore boys, born and bred.”

And in cricket he recalls his first game for the premiers as though it was yesterday.

New Zealand player Matt Horne was in the opposition for Papatoetoe.

“It was amazing to be on the same field playing someone you idolised.”

Another highlight was winning the Auckland T20 championship last season – “my first championship for the club”.

Wall hopes to play on for a few years yet, with the immediate goal of gaining promotion this season to the first division.

“It’s a division we feel we should be in – it’s a matter of putting in the hard work to get there.”

More special licences for North Shore Rugby Club wanted The four special licquor licences council plans to offer North Shore Rugby Club were insufficent, according to submissions put to a hearing this week.

A proposal to amend the Devonport Domain Management Plan was to allow the special licenses was to be heard the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board Hearings panel on Tuesday after the Flagstaff went to press.

The hearings panel can either proceed with the amendment for four special licences or decline it a notify a new proposal for an increased number of special licences each year.

All seven submissions on the proposal felt the number of special licences available should be higher. Club patron and fomer North Shore City Deputy Mayor Dianne Hale submitted the idea that the 16 special licences available for Devonport Domain (other licence holders included North Cricket Club, the Masonic Cricket Club and no defunct Devonport Bowling) could be pooled.

Hundreds of special licences had been granted to the North Shore Rugby club in error since the Devonport Domain Management Plan was introduced in 1993.

The rugby club had become a popular venue for events, luncheons, family celebrations and funerals.

Blue Moon Sun shines at Vic Blue Moon Sun - a thriller by local Stef Harris - will screen at the Victoria Theatre on November 11.

The film was was staged and shot on an iPhone entirely within and around a Motueka petrol station in the small hours of the morning.

“After years working as a frontline police officer I became fascinated with the people of the night. The night cashiers, cleaners, taxi drivers, security guards, the police and the criminal underclass… I wanted to make a story entirely within that realm, using the nighttime almost as a thematic special effect…

Two North Shore Utd AFC coaches were both suspended for one playing day. But they were not fined. Forrest Hill Milford Utd AFC were fined $200 and North Shore Utd AFC were also fined $200 as a result of the incident.

However Auckland football’s governing body ruled that the referee erred in issuing North Shore player Ashley Ngadela with a red card.

The governing body said Ngadela was acting in self-defence when he became engaged in a fight with the father. The body rescinded the red card issued by the referee to Ngadela in the 70th minute of the game.

The match will not be replayed and the score of 0-0 when the match was abandoned stands.

Further names needed at Ryman Ryman Healthcare is looking for names for individual buildings at its Ngataringa Retirement Home.

The main facility has been named after William Sanders, a naval war hero. The name emerged after well attended public meetings, a Ryman spokesperson said.

However, Ryman had had “great feedback to the name, he’s a local hero and it is great to be able to tell his story.

The Navy is pleased also, given his ties to

the area. His family was delighted to see him remembered in this way.”

In terms of the Duder family, who once owned a brickworks on the site, the spokesperson said “We have collected the bricks and we will be using them as a pointer to the history.”

“While we’ve chosen the name for the village, we also name each apartment block on the site and are looking for names for them,” he said.

Sculpture OnShore brings artist back to

Tree work... Artist Sally Tagg was born close to where she has installed her kauri tree sculpture

Artist Sally Tagg will return to her birthplace with a giant kauri exhibit in this year’s Sculpture OnShore.

The event at Fort Takapuna is especially meaningful to Tagg, as she was born at the Navy maternity hospital at Narrow Neck, and shares a special connection to Devonport through family and art. She lived in Westmere and Ponsonby until recently, before moving back to Devonport.

“It’s got a slightly slower pace. As an artist you do have to slow down for those creative ideas to come through. Devonport allows me to do that,” she says. “I’ve come home.”

Her sculpture, entitled When The Last

Kauri Falls, was created by Tagg to highlight kauri dieback.

She hopes that it will raise awareness around the importance of keeping the trees alive. “I want people to think about kauri dieback” she says.

“It’s a very emotional subject for people.

I want to approach it on a level of coming together, cherishing and loving it, and maybe we will have a breakthrough.”

Tagg works primarily as a photographer, and two years ago began photographing kauri dieback in Northland forests.

She was amazed at how widespread it was, and was particularly taken aback by how

dramatic the kauri tree looks as it is dying.

“Once it dies, the shape of the tree that’s left turns completely white. It’s really haunting when you see it in the bush. Really moving.”

Comprised of aluminium bark scales, kauri leaves and creature figurines, the sculpture is based on a photograph Tagg took in the forest.

“The kauri is a keystone species, which means it supports all of these other ecosystems,” she says.

“If we lose the kauri we will lose a lot of other native trees and creatures such as lizards, frogs and even bats.”

Clay-motion: Hundreds of pinch pots arrive by personal delivery Zero waste is the focus of Vauxhall School’s installation for this year’s Sculpture OnShore.

School pupils, alongside art coordinator Mary Laurence, have designed and crafted clay pinch pots, which will be part of the outdoor installation.

“All engravings will also be made using natural findings from the environment” says Laurence.

“The pots will be unfired, with the intention that any erosion will eventually return the clay to the earth, where it originally came from.”

About 320 students will walk to Fort Takapuna, carrying their pots.

“We’re really passionate that they see themselves as artists,” Laurence says.

At The Learning Space they focus on the building trusting relationships with both whanau and children, and acknowledge that in order for children to play, develop friendships and theories on the world, they must first be secure, have a strong attachment within the centre.

Yvonne already owns two other centres, one being on the grounds of North Shore Hospital that she took over 3 years ago and transformed into a space that truly values children. She knew that she wanted to share her philosophy, way of learning and being with children and it has since developed a strong reputation within the hospital community.

Belmont has been a ‘work in progress’ for nearly 5 years, living locally, knowing that this different way of being with children was something that this community would embrace. She hopes to develop strong links within the local Belmont and Devonport community, taking regular walks with the children to Philomel Reserve so that it becomes an extension of the centre space.

Yvonne’s teaching philosophy doesn’t just extend to children, regular parent evenings and meaningful conversations with mums and dads are all imperative to her practice.

“Take care of the children, take care of what they hear, take care of what they see, take care of how they feel.

The Flagstaff Notes

While a lot of retail news is doom and gloom, the recently renovated The Arcade on Victoria Rd is filling up – a new barber has moved in along with a new café/restaurant, and other shops are being set up for fresh businesses. I would encourage residents to pop in and have a look. Shops can’t survive without customers.

Twenty years ago, The Arcade was the WJ Scott Mall, owned by former National Party MP and cabinet minister Jack Scott. Whatever you thought of Scott’s political views, he was an old-style gentleman with 50s-era manners a few of today’s politicians could do well to emulate. Scott was highly opinionated on Devonport issues and would occasionally pay for a full-page advert in the Flagstaff to air his views. One of his ideas for the Wynyard St end of the mall was to build a backpackers over the carpark. Scott thought the backpackers would yield a steady stream of tourists who would patronise eateries and businesses year round.

For one reason or another he couldn’t get the idea past city-hall planners smoothly enough

to make it viable. Looking back, it would have been a great addition for Devonport, which has limited budget accommodation options in the town centre. Now, with the price of land and buildings in Devonport so high the opportunity is likely gone.

Or maybe it is something cash-hungry Panuku could investigate for the empty former Devonport Borough Council building in Victoria Rd.

While the spring timing of the lime onslaught couldn’t be faulted in bringing a bit of postwinter fun to the city, regulation Nazis must have a few hairs bristling.

And after I finished this column last week moves were being made to control their use.

The scooters can get up to around 30kmh, and although wearing a helmet is recommended, they aren’t supplied with the machines. They are an accident waiting to happen – I was almost run over on Sunday by two girls running Devonport-Takapuna local board members late for the Auckland marathon and zooming – particularly Grant Gillon and Mike Cohen down the Victoria Rd footpath.

Flash back a couple of years: the idea then was to establish a visitor information centre in Devonport, as the gateway to the North Shore.

Auckland Tourism got cold feet on this idea, though, and Shore Tourism was the result: a largely internet-based initiative to promote Devonport, Takapuna and Milford.

I’m worried the Devonport Business Improvement District – very much the poor cousin in terms of income – is in danger of being dominated by its neighbours. The fact the launch of the Shore Tourism website is to be held in Takapuna on 8 November could be seen as foreshadowing this trend.

Devonport and Auckland have fallen in love with the Lime electric scooters – almost in inverse proportion to the general distaste for the Enzo rental bikes that were previously dumped on the city.

Firefighting-foam toxicity needs checking The godwits fly thousands of miles to Ngataringa Bay and then fossick around feeding in the bay’s polluted sediments.

I suspect they end up with a nasty dose of carcinogens from toxic firefighting foam discharged by our Navy from the damagecontrol school.

There are no plans to clean it up and I understand the toxicity is at the high end of the scale.

Council worry about fecal coliforms and

post health warning signs about the water safety. However, there is silence on these toxic cancer-causing foam ingredients.

I guess we won’t notice cancer in the godwits.

But we might do in those who have done the mud run over decades in the bay. It’s negligence not to check the real toxicity levels in the bay and to warn off the people I see eating cockles and flounder.

Birdman of Bayswater looks out for rare visitors Philip Moll is a conservationist, photographer and guardian of Ngataringa and Shoal Bays and their wetlands. He talks to Helen Vause about his work and the growing interest in this special habitat.

“and it’s under threat. Coexisting with the birds just calls for a little more awareness and understanding. Things like not walking on the tops of the sandbanks where the birds nest, and not walking so close as to disturb the birds or cause them to rise up and expend energy they’re going to need for their next journey.”

A curiosity and passion for the world around him started for Moll as a boy growing up in Hampshire, England. Badger-watching captured the imagination of a lad who’d often tear off after dinner on his bike to be at the creatures’ habitat just on dusk. He’d wait quietly in any suitable tree he could climb to watch over the entrance to the badgers’ burrow, waiting for one of the creatures to emerge as night fell.

Sometimes badger-watching brought various perils. Legs would go numb from sitting in trees, and there was the scary prospect of getting back out of the woods alone in the dark and pedalling home again. And there was the night he heard a piercing scream – it was a vixen fox, the freaked-out teen later realised.

“It was pretty exciting out there and I was just hooked on natural history.”

November 2, 2018 Surrey and Moll, now a young man, had nearby Horsell Common to roam in. There was wildlife aplenty to watch, with deer, badgers, foxes and more in abundance on the common.

There was more to feed the imagination too: the sandpits in the common were the sites where the invading Martians landed their spacecraft in HG Wells’ science-fiction novel War of the Worlds.

Moll brought a passion for wildlife photography to his outdoor rambles and great

And although he moved with his wife and family to New Zealand in 1993, on return visits to the UK he contributed bags of photographic images to keepers of history there; he’s happy that so many of his pictures are in the collections at the acclaimed Lightbox Gallery in Woking, Surrey.

In New Zealand too, Moll’s beautiful photos have helped augment his conservation work, both by raising awareness and by bringing compelling evidence to the desks of bureaucrats and decision makers, thus supporting his many tussles in the name of conservation work. His pictures have a power of their own.

As a newcomer to a country where his beloved mammals would be equated with pests, the forests and creatures of his new homeland had to be discovered. One step was a walk at Smiths Bush in Northcote in 2008, and other bush walks on the North Shore.

In 2011, he made his first trip to Miranda in the Firth of Thames, home of the Miranda Shorebird Centre. He laughs at the memory of not realising he’d got the tide time wrong for his first serious bird-watching foray. But he returned time and again to Miranda, observing the shorebirds and learning about them and their habitat. It was a whole new fascination.

The trips to Miranda set him wondering about what was on his own doorstep – Shoal Bay. There were no signs in those days to indicate what he was already starting to think; that this place was just like Miranda and that no one else seemed to have very much interest in this local gem.

Moll began searching the internet for more information about the habitat, the shell banks, what species lived there, their status, the protection plans and more.

He soon found the shell banks around Shoal and Ngataringa Bays were known as Chenier

shell banks, and that they were a pretty rare feature on a world scale. He didn’t know much about the birds he had started to observe but the trusty camera helped accelerate his interest when he got a great shot of an overhead flock.

When he enlarged that photo at home he realised he’d captured images of 38 wrybil on the wing, the birds with a distinctive rightcurving bill. There are only about 5000 of them in the world and here they were in his bay.

He became more and more interested in the habitat that’s now acknowledged as a trove of biodiversity, with about 40 bird species in the environs that are either resident or visit, like the godwits, to refuel, rest and breed before they take off again. It’s estimated about 12 of those species are at risk from human activity on the land around them.

“When I first started taking more interest in the bay I just couldn’t believe there was little or no signage. To me it just seemed incredible that awareness was apparently so low. People were able to walk all over the nesting areas and so were their dogs.”

He pushed hard for the interpretive signs that was installed in 2014, followed (but not for another two years) by the installation of official signs to keep dogs out of the area.

Around that time he was working with a growing group on predator control. In addition to monitoring, photographing and lobbying for active protection measures, he was also out attending to bait stations around the bay.

Moll is still incredulous that active interest

in and protection for this special stretch of shoreline was all so tenuous. But he is pleased to be a driving force in changing times and to be raising awareness in a neighbourhood where more and more like-minded people are coming forward to join him.

Word has spread of many of his conservation initiatives. His school talks, he says, have been a particular success, and he’s found the level of interest among local school children he has addressed to be very gratifying.

The pressure is on like never before for these waterways, says Moll, with adjacent developments under way and more works pending.

“The focus has been all about the human environment here and not about the natural environment, even though these are very significant and important sites. Surely we don’t want to diminish these places. Surely the council doesn’t want to diminish them. Surely New Zealand doesn’t want that to happen.

“If you know what to look for there are already plenty of small warnings. This wildlife has been here a long time. Where will the birds go as the trees come down for development around Northboro Reserve?”

He says he’s aware of small slips related to current development work. More planned footpaths and the increase in runoff from many new houses will all threaten the balance of the surrounding bays, he warns.

“It’s very important that everyone knows we are here and we are watching.”

Dentist launches recycling programme Company Theatre returns to The Rose Centre with Roger Hall’s “Last Legs”. News that Bill English is to open a new wing of the Cambridge Retirement Village sparks a revolution among its residents. Dental product recycling… Jurka Vuletic A dental-waste recycling initiative has been launched by Devonport dentist Jurka Vuletic, with waste such as toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes and floss containers being collected for recycling.

Vuletic works out of Tam Dental Group in Fleet St – which took over John Kelly’s practice this year – and has been getting to know the community. “ D e v o n p o r t ’s v e r y c o n s c i o u s o f sustainability. That’s inspiring for us, and I thought we could get on board,” she says.

Tam Dental will be one of only two drop-off points on the North Shore for the disposal of dental products.

The programme was launched by Colgate and Australian company Terracycle, which collects the waste for recycling.

Vuletic is encouraging everyone to get on board. “Bring in your waste on your way down to the supermarket. You don’t need to do anything, just drop it off.”

The practice will have a bin located just inside their door. The materials will be sent to Australia to be recycled, with proceeds donated to a local charity.

“I hope it’s one of many positive things we can do as a practice,” says Vuletic. “As a community I think there’s a lot we could do, and the more the merrier.”

Local florist Devonport Flowers has become a recycling point for used Nespresso aluminium coffee capsules.

The collected capsules are being sent to a recycling facility in South Auckland, where the aluminium is separated from the residual coffee. The coffee is composted and the aluminium recycled into the aluminium industry to be made into new products.

Morag Burden from Devonport Flowers said the Nespresso capsules recycling programme is a great way to get the community recycling more.

“We love seeing our customers come in with their used Nespresso capsules for recycling,” Burden said. “Once collected, we pack them up and ship them directly to the recycling facility– it’s so easy. I also have a Nespresso machine at home and love that

I can recycle the capsules we use at home.”

There are now over 120 florists and garden centres where the capsules can be left for recycling. .

The project is a partnership between Nespresso and recycling company TerraCycle, which operates several free programmes to help New Zealanders recycle hard-to-recycle waste, such as coffee capsules, toothbrushes and yoghurt pouches Collectors can visit www.terracycle. co.nz, to join a programme, collect the waste, then send it in using a free downloaded postal sticker.

Those who observe Central government and Ministry for the Environment (MfE), or those who recently read the Auckland Council’s new waste plan cover to cover may have noticed a shift in waste minimisation and management language to a circular economy. For the rest of us mere mortals with a passing interest in waste and “doing the right thing” by the environment we simply wait for the sound bites and signals.

So for the rest of us circular economy is the principle of breaking the mould of take, make, and dispose linear economy. In its place we make new things out of waste and ensure waste items can be used again.

The great news is Devonport is once again leading the way; 40 odd years ago Devonport was first town to do recycling. On the same site we now have the first Circular Economy landscapes supplier. Sustainable landscapes offers a wide range of building and landscaping materials made from 100% waste materials. By buying waste materials

as replacements to environmentally destructive quarrying we can support recycling and businesses who are recycling and those who are trying to move to a circular economy. A memorial gathering has been organised to celebrate the life and achievements of former Devonport identity Charlie Collins, who died recently, aged 84.

Collins grew up in Devonport, went to Takapuna Grammar School, and in his younger days played rugby league for North Shore. He was involved in developing the Bayswater sports field which was formerly home to a concrete military bunker.

He was a sewing-machine mechanic and will be remembered by many locals as the owner of a lawnmower repair business on the corner of Lake Rd and Williamson Ave in the 1960s and 70s.

Collins also worked on trawlers, became a marine engineer and taught himself refrigeration. He had a very active mind and came up with the idea of using solenoid valves on gas bottles as a safety feature.

Among his other inventions were fish sausages which he called fishages, a box for toll-barring a phone (before the digital age) and a machine to produce potato chips from raw potatoes.

Collins was a long-standing member of Ponsonby Cruising Club and during his time as club manager worked tirelessly to promote events for members. He built several ‘mullet boats’ and had a life-long love of sailing.

Engineer, inventor, sailor... Former Devonport identity Charlie Collins died in September, aged 84 who represented the club in the quarter-ton cup challenge in France. Later, he went to Fremantle to help wherever he was needed in the first New Zealand challenge for the America’s Cup. Belmont Primary encourages independent travellers

Wheely good fun... Belmont Primary pupils are doing much more walking, cycling and scootering to school Belmont Primary School has seen biking, scootering and walking to school increase from 25 per cent of students to 80 per cent in the last two years.

The school has had to more than double the size of its bike and scooter shed – and even this area is filled to overflowing.

It has now launched a new initiative to get even more kids going to and from school under their own steam.

A parent has put three bikes up for grabs in a prize draw as a further incentive for students to travel independently to school.

A scooter safety programme was run at the school earlier this week.

Belmont Primary principal Bruce Cunningham said the aim of the initiative was twofold: to foster independence in pupils and to get cars off the road and cut back on vehicle emissions.

“We have some parents driving kids to school, carrying their bags up to the gate and tying their shoelaces for them.”

Encouraging safe and independent travel would help students develop an awareness that would carry over into after-school hours as well, he said.

Other school rules have changed to foster scootering and cycling.

Pupils can now scooter, skateboard and cycle on school courts at lunch, and other break times. And it is now up to parents to decide if it is safe for their child to scooter or bike to school, in place of a school rule that limited the transport option to year-6 students and above.

In another green initiative, plastic rubbish – lunch wrappers and the like – are being sent home with kids to encourage less waste, Cunningham said.

The production of The Pridian What does Monday morning look like? Probably still under warm blankets, just waking up and getting ready for the day. For seven senior girls, this was not the case. Over four months the girls met early, wrote articles, collected images and pieced together an edition of ‘The Pridian’ - a magazine made for students, by students. Year 12s Carina Oliver, Editorin-Chief, and Amelia Price, Chief Designer, organised Lin Li Yeo, Laiba Batool, Rebecca Lu, Amanda Groenewald, and Nelly Farmiloe, supervised by Mrs Robin Holding. The Pridian was previously a student newspaper (1996 – 2003) and after a hiatus of some years was re-formatted into a magazine in 2015. For some unknown reason it was again discontinued.

The girls, all with a passion for journalism, wanted to reintroduce the magazine to give students somewhere to read about successes and events at our school and raise the spirits of the school we

Competition success Anya Christiansen has done her school proud; being awarded a Highly commended for her beautiful poem, ‘Freda Du Faur, Conqueror of Mountains’. She came in the top 8, when she entered the Smart Alex writing competition that had over 200 entries.

The nation-wide, secondary school competition is dedicated to the late Alexander Turnbull who had a great collection of things - from magazines and books to coins and artefacts. His passion for these objects now make up the biggest documentary heritage library in New Zealand due to his generous contribution 100 years ago.

All entries for Smart Alex must derive inspiration from a heritage object, picture or item. Anya chose a comic strip from an old newspaper that featured the first woman to climb Mt Everest, Freda Du Faur. “I was really interested when I learnt about Freda’s life in the 50s,” she commented. “She defied so many social rules for women and really let herself live the way she wanted to live. She really inspired me as a foresister to modern feminism as she was powerful, wholesome and unabashedly original.”

Anya crafted a powerful poem that left her audience in awe due its heartfelt and beautiful portrayal. It had been carefully articulated with such passion and effort, so it comes as no surprise that Anya received such a commendable award.

She was granted a special certificate and $50 book token during assembly where she received loud and proud applause from her fellow peers.

They disappeared quite fast and students loved reading about others’ successes and maybe even catching a glimpse of their own artwork, or picture in the magazine. We had an incredible time creating the magazine and hope it continues in following years with the younger students.

Pride Week

For the second year in a row, the Peer Sexuality Support Programme (PSSP) team held a successful TGS ‘Pride Week’. Students and teachers were encouraged to attend events throughout the week, including a bake sale, movie night, and a mufti day. The PSSP team worked collaboratively with the schools LGBT group, creating delicious rainbow treats to sell. Later in the week, a screening of the hit movie ‘Love, Simon’ was shown in the school library. Students showed up in pajamas, and snacks were provided resulting in a very enjoyable evening. Tears were shed. The highlight event of the week was the rainbow themed mufti day when the school became engulfed in colourful clothing.At lunchtime Meghan Parr - a year 13 member of the team - organised a ‘Pride’ playlist. The voices of Adam Lambert and Queen echoed throughout the school for an uplifting event to conclude the week.

Takapuna Grammar School raised a whopping sum of over $1200 for Rainbow Youth - a charity that supports queer and gender diverse youth in NZ.

A great CAS success A group of our IB CAS students have been raising money for life pod incubators, as their CAS project this year and have now been invited to meet Sir Ray Avery, so he can thank them for their self-initiated project. A great outcome for these IB Diploma students.

NATALIE SAYES (Year 9) is the NZ Squash #1 at U15, AKL #1 Junior U19, the youngest member of the Auckland Open Women’s team as well as Auckland Junior Player of the year, for the fifth year in a row.

JADEN MENG is the NZ U19 Table Tennis Champion and the NZ Men’s Open runner up.

ISAAC DENNY placed 1st All Around in Level 7, Under 16, at the NZ Gymnastics Championships in Tauranga. He also placed 1st on pommel, 2nd on floor and vault and 3rd on high bar. At the same event, Harrison Smith won Gold in the Men’s 15-16 Double Mini Trampoline and Bronze in the Men’s 15-16 Individual Trampoline.

SAM UPTON won a silver medal at the 2019 Oceania Track Cycling Championships Men Junior Team Sprint Final in Adelaide.

JAMES FAIRBAIRN was named Harbour Rugby Under 14 player of the year.

NEPHI CARNEIRO DE BRITO won a silver medal in the juvenile men no-gi / light / (u66.2Kg) at the Auckland Regionals JiuJitsu Competition ANNA BROWNING and SAM PETHERICK have been selected for the Auckland Hearts A Woman’s Cricket Team ARABELLA MAYNARD has been selected into the NZU17 woman’s football team heading to the FIFA World Cup in Uruguay next month.

Last, but certainly not least, our very own Deputy Principal WILL SCOVELL was named Administrator of the Year at the North Harbour Rugby Awards.

A passionate baker and someone who loves to entertain, Joanne Freeman says her new kitchen needed to be both practical and have a wow factor, and designer Marianne Gailer from Takapuna-based Kitchens By Design came up with a design that delivered both.

Could you tell me a little about you and your family and also about your home – in particular, describe the existing kitchen before the makeover?

There’s just the two of us, and we moved into our house in Stanley Pt about six years ago. The original kitchen was not in a good state – it was old fashioned with sage green doors. They had to go, so as a short-term solution we did a quick makeover replacing them with white panelled doors and putting in a stainless steel benchtop and splashback.

How did you come across Kitchens By Design, and why did you choose them to design your new kitchen?

It was a Saturday morning, and I happened to be walking past their showroom on Byron Ave, so I popped in and started talking with Richard (Cripps), and he was lovely. I liked the kitchens they had on display and the range of materials he showed me.

On the back of that, I made an appointment for Marianne (Gailer) to come out to see me at my home, and she was lovely, too. She asked me lots of questions about how I used the kitchen, and also told me she was really excited about the prospect of designing my new kitchen – which to me said she was passionate about what she was doing. And if someone is passionate about something, you know you’re going to get a good job done.

What were some of the most enjoyable and memorable moments of the process?

Seeing the completed kitchen set up in the factory – that’s when you could really appreciate the craftsmanship and detailing for the first time; then, when the benchtops went in and I could see the kitchen almost complete – that was amazing.

What are your favourite parts of your new kitchen?

All of it – the baking area, the benchtop, the appliances. In the past, we had done up houses and sold them, but this kitchen was for me. I didn’t do it for anyone else, or to resell, and that was a big thing. When my friends first saw it, they said…”Oh, you’ve done your kitchen up, does that mean What was your brief to the designer, and how you’re moving on? I said…No, this one’s for keeps!” did it evolve?

I’d been looking at magazines for a long while and seen a lot of kitchens my friends had put in, How did you find the experience of so knew what I wanted, but not exactly what it working with Kitchens By Design?

Stanley Bay and Devonport win primary cricket titles Stanley Bay won the boys title and Devonport Primary the girls at the 3rd annual Peninsula Primary School Cricket tournament held on October 17th. The tournament - a joint venture between Takapuna Grammar and North Shore Cricket Club and is open to all peninsula primary schools.

Eight boys teams and four girls teams competed on at Takapuna Grammar cricket field each playing a round robin then moving into semi finals and final matches.

Both teams will now represent the Peninsula at the Auckland Champion of champions tournamtent to be held at Eden Park’s outer oval on November 13th.

ThE NAVy COmmuNiTy NEwSLETTER Navy yacht success in Coastal Classic Favourable conditions and a swift sail up the east coast to Cape Brett helped the Royal NZ Navy yacht, Manga ll to victory in Division 5 of the PIC Coastal Classic recently.

Manga ll was first across the line and first on handicap in its division – the best result in recent times for the Navy in this race.

A crew of nine from across the New Zealand Defence Force sailed the yacht north from Devonport on Friday morning. They included Navy, Army and one civilian personnel.

The Manga ll is a 26 year old, 12 metre sail training craft from the Navy Adventure Training Squadron in Devonport and has competed in 21 previous Coastal Classics.

“We had an easterly wind all the way up the east coast and were able to sail on the wind which suits our boat,” says Manga ll crew skipper, Chief Petty Officer Hamish Ivey.

“The swell and chop that was created for that first six to eight hours, was no problem for Manga ll, but slowed other boats and we were able to keep our boat speed up,” he says.

“As we rounded Cape Brett into the Bay of Islands, we put the spinnaker up and had a gentle slow run into Tapeka Point at the entrance to Russell. The early morning fog

and light airs made it a slow sail into the finish line.”

They crossed at 7.45am, a dominant 45 minutes ahead of their nearest rival.

“From 8am to midday, the breeze dropped right away, so the rest of the yachts to finish were stuck with no wind. We were lucky we got that last bit of breeze to get us across the finish line,” says CPO Ivey.

Of the 160 yachts that took part in the PIC Coastal Classic, only 109 finished the course.

“We were very happy to take top honours in our division,” he says. “Every one of the crew had a turn at steering and a job on board, so we all had a go, not just the most experienced crew.”

He says the highlight was getting the result.

“The fog came in as we crossed the line and we didn’t know until the results came through, whether there were yachts ahead of us or not. That final result was the best moment.”

Parents should engage with peninsula schools over technology use There has been some debate over the use of iPads and other devices in the schools on the Devonport peninsula. This is in part due to the concern of some parents over the potential effect of device use on children.

Most alarming is a recent report showing correlation in an increase in suicide in the ‘iGeneration’ – those born after 1995. The most likely cause, according to one of the researchers is not the toxic influence of social media but the isolating effect of online engagement.

Of course we can act to manage the time our children are active online, but generally we can’t control the amount of online engagement they have in school. It is unclear if there are any requirements in the New Zealand Curriculum for the use of so-called ‘ICT’. That is coupled with a sense of disquiet felt by some parents that we may all be engaging in an experiment with our children that could have negative effects.

The New Zealand curriculum states its objective is developing students’ capacity to work within the so-called digital domain.

There is little guidance provided on engagement levels across the years, it simply states that Years 1-10 develop skills in the areas of computational thinking and design, and in Years 11-13 they specialise.

So how do we, as parents, approach the issue of ICT in our primary schools?

Generally we know that learning is socially constructed: kids learn best when they are collaborating with their peers, which can conflict with the isolating nature of some ICT technologies. It falls to the teacher’s expertise in using ICT as a learning tool in the classroom. Research shows that teachers need to be versed in three knowledge sets – content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge (knowledge of the methods of conveying the content) and technological knowledge (knowledge of the technology that assists in the conveyance of the content, applying the appropriate pedagogic approaches). The first two aspects are what teachers are educated

in, but what experience our primary teachers have in the area of technological knowledge is likely to vary widely.

Add to this various commercial entities selling e-learning packages into the schools and it isn’t too hard to envisage a scenario where teachers lacking deep understanding of the convergence of content, pedagogy and technology, coupled with an Education Ministry telling teachers they need to develop students’ digital fluency, without providing clear guidance, results in teachers rather blindly implementing e-learning packages in the class room.

I suggest that interested parents should engage in our schools, asking what professional development teachers are being provided, and any ICT implementation in the school assists in the development of learning in collaborative environments.

Finally, we should be recognising the greater complexity involved in such a teaching model and asking why they aren’t being paid a reasonable wage for such a complex but, hopefully, rewarding job.

20 years ago from the Flagstaff files • Devonport resident and star athlete Simon Poelman ends up in Mt Eden Prison as he begins a five-and-a-half-year sentence for importing 1900 ecstasy tablets to New Zealand.

Only a month before he had been competing in the decathlon at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur while on bail for the ecstasy charge.

• Jacko Gill, aged three, features on the front page in a “wedding” with Isabella Scott, also three. The wedding was arranged by their older sisters Hannah Scott and Ayla Gill.

The couple pledged they would clean the toilet and help with the dishes.

National titles tumble for young gymnasts Local boys Batu Yazici, Isaac Denny and Jack Denny all enjoyed success at the Gymnastics Nationals in Tauranga over the school holidays.

Batu won the under-18 all-around national title and came first on floor, parallel bars and high bar, second on pommel and fourth on rings.

Isaac won the level 7 (under-16) all-around national title and came first on pommel, second on floor and vault, third on high bar and fourth on parallel bars and rings.

Jack was a member of the North Harbour team that won the level-6 competition. He came second in the level-6 all-around competition, third on parallel bars, fourth on floor, and fifth on vault.
