Quay stone cop-out – Maori anchor stone made in China The stylized Maori anchor stone installed during the Marine Square upgrade was made in China – after Iwi let slip the chance to design and build it. The stone sits within the wall along the boardwalk that leads up to the new entrance
of the Devonport Wharf building. The concept of an anchor stone for a waka had been developed in consultation with iwi through the project’s design phase from 2009 until 2012, says Auckland Transport (AT) spokesperson Mark Hannan.
“Following further consultation with iwi in 2013, we invited six mana whenua groups to tender for the detailed design and construction of the anchor stone. Unfortunately there was no response from iwi,” he says. To page 7
