Half-hour, 2am harbour crossing lands triathlete in troubled waters Devonport triathlete Andrew Ranford got into hot water with the police after he swum across the Auckland harbour following a drinking session.

His plunge from Queens Wharf at 2 am last Friday was spotted by a member of the public, who alerted police. The Eagle helicopter and a police boat went searching for him.

Police said Ranford (21) took 30 minutes to swim to Devonport ferry terminal.

Ranford saw the Eagle circling around and waved out but they did not see him, police said.

Ranford then decided to run to his home in Cheltenham, where he was met by police who were already there, having traced him from the wallet he left on the wharf.

Radford’s parents were spoken to, as was Andrew, who said that he had been drinking and decided to swim across the harbour to get home, police Senior Sgt Darryl Simeti said.

The Randfords were advised by police to take Andrew to North Shore A and E for a check up.

He regretted the incident, police said.

Ranford was a top-performing triathlete at secondary school level and beyond and in 2014 raced in senior events overseas.

Attempts to contact him were unsucessful.

North Shore cricketers’ season in the balance The North Shore Premiers cricket side’s quest for promotion to the first division of the Auckland competition has come down to a must-win last match.

After topping the Tom Hellaby Trophy second division for most of the season, North Shore lost to second-placed Cornwall last weekend to lead the title race by only 1.20 points.

The Devonport-based side now faces an away match against third-placed Waitakere ,set down for March 21 and 28 at Te Atatu Park. Cornwall play Eden Roskill at home.

North Shore coach Ken Olsen said a better performance against Cornwall had been the aim, but the team had everything to play for this weekend.

TGS Oliver production expands cast to BIS Ta k a p u n a G r a m m a r School’s 2015 show, Oliver! features the school’s largest ever cast.

A total of 140 students have been cast, including 18 from Belmont Intermediate School (BIS) next door.

The main character, Oliver, is shared by Lauren Towns (12), a Year 8 student at BIS, and Christian Swan (13) who just started in Year 9 at Takapuna Grammar (TGS).

The other BIS students are in Fagin’s gang and at the Workhouse, says TGS Head of Performing Arts Bruce De Grut.

“Initially, their main function was to be small and kid-like, but as it turns out they also capture a whole new audience for us…what we have to offer in the performing arts, all of which is great,” says De Grut.

Christian and Lauren have quite a bit of stage experience already. “I have been doing acting and singing and dancing all my life,” says Christian, who has performed since he was eight in productions including Tom Sawyer, Grease, Little Mermaid, Peter Pan and Shrek the Musical. He is determined to become an actor on Broadway.

Lauren has been dancing since the age of seven but only started singing two years ago and has been acting since last year. She auditioned for Oliver! by chance. “When I walked past my music teacher said I should audition. I had to call my mum and say I would be late. I didn’t have an Oliver song prepared, so I sang one

Having the show so early into the school year, means practice has been short and intense.

“We practise between four or five days a weekMonday, Friday, Saturday and for the whole day on Sunday.”

The wider production support crew are working hard too. Annamarie Dixon, who is in charge of the costumes, has been sourcing props and costumes from op shops and the like and amazingly has only spent $1,000 of the $3,000

budget for the 300 costumes needed.

For some of the students in their final year at school, Oliver! is also a first. “It’s my first proper big musical,” says Sam Fraser, who plays The Artful Dodger. “I am short and cheeky and I think that’s what they were looking for,” he says. Andy Song, who plays Fagin, only took up singing at school last year.

Chainsaws and demolition hammers ring out in Cheltenham

A few eyebrows were raised last week over the near demolition of a 100-year-old house on Cheltenham Road and the felling of a mature pohutukawa on Tainui Rd, but both projects had been sanctioned by council.

Consent for extensive renovations of the 1915 house at 31 Cheltenham Rd was granted last April. Ian Dobson, Auckland Council Manager Resource Consent Northern, says: “Essentially, a large proportion of the original fabric of the building had been previously altered, most significantly in the 1980s. This includes the front porch and fenestration, and the entirety of the rear of the dwelling.”

Therefore, the threshold for considering the proposed alteration and addition as a demolition were not met, Dobson says. As part of the alterations, the building will be moved toward the street by 3.1 metres.

Devonport Heritage spokesperson Trish Deans says that after the initial alarm bells, she had a look at the plans. “This part of Cheltenham Road represents a complete set of authentic and well maintained houses, and the scale of the surrounding single-storey dwellings is an important feature of the streetscape. The plans aim to complement this character area. Basically, the owners looked at what they have got and kept what they can,” Deans says.

However she was concerned that as the house was extensively re-clad in the 1980s the applicant seems to be able to get around demolition prevention provisions. “That could be a worry as a lot of renovations these days do involve re-cladding so could as a result mean that further down the track it will allow an owner to argue parts of house are post-1940 and therefore not subject to demolition controls.”

“The renovations do seem to be retaining character even if it will be new and the layout in the house will be much improved for modern living.” The house has been hidden from view by a hedge and overall the alterations would improve the streetscape once completed,” Deans said.

Deans was less certain about last Friday’s felling of a mature pohutukawa along the fence line of 36 Tainui Rd, across from where she lives. “It seems to be totally legit, but it changes the character of our streetscape, which is full From page 1

Walls go up... the Habitat house took shape at TGS last week Long-time local Gerald Lightbourne spent last week building someone else’s house for free. “The world has been good to me and I like to give back because I can,” the Devonportborn builder of 50 years says. He is one of many locals who helped build a five-bedroom Habitat for Humanity house on the grounds of Takapuna Grammar School (TGS).

A former TGS student himself, Lightbourne has also seen his two adult children go through the school. Both of them now have children and own houses around Auckland, he says.

Lightbourne is happy to help a less fortunate family get a foot in the door of the booming Auckland housing market.

The house is Habitat’s 101st for Auckland and is purpose built for the Sekalias and their five children. Once complete, it will be trucked to Clendon Park, Mangere where the family currently rent a three-bedroom house on a combined income of less than $45,000.

“I love building and New Zealand is such a small place, we are all connected with each other anyway,” Lightbourne says.

Last Friday, as Lightbourne was helping to build the outside frame, two thirds of Habitat’s $150,000 fundraising goal for the house had been reached, says the organisation’s Resource and Development manager Conrad La Pointe.

“And we still have a big fundraiser from Devonport Rotary and a few smaller ones by the school coming up,” he says.

“We are also running a TradeMe auction for a seat in the truck that takes the house away on April 7,” he says.

“Devonport Rotary have been extremely active in fundraising, as have the pupils at Takapuna Grammar,” says La Pointe.

• An “Open Home” of the finished house will run on March 29 from 11 am until 2 pm.

Surf life saver takes national ironwoman title TGS student Hannah Willams took out the Under-19 ironwoman title and placed second in the Under-19 board race at the national surflifesaving champs at Gisborne last weekend.

The champs capped a stellar summer for the 16-year-old who won five gold medals at the Surf Life Saving Northern Region Surf Lifessaving champs in Ruakaka recently.

She took out the gold in the surf race, ski race, board race, run-swim-run and Ironwoman events in the Under-19 division. She also won two individual silver medals in the Under-19 2 km beach run and beach flag race.

In team events, Hannah (competing for Piha Surf Life Saving Club) placed first in the open women’s taplin relay and the surf swim. She also placed second in the open women’s board relay, and surf ski relay, and in the Under-19 board rescue, taplin relay and the mixed double ski.

Last year, while still in the Under-16 division, Hannah went to the SLS world champs in Montpellier, France and came home with two individual bronze medals. Her team also won a silver and two bronze medals.

The talented athlete started at Takapuna Grammar School this year. “I only moved to Hauraki last week from Remuera where I used to go to Epsom Girls,” she says.

Ironwoman is princess of the surf… Hannah Williams in action over. “Now I just walk down to Takapuna Beach or to Lake Pupuke to train,” says Hannah. Hannah is the youngest of three and her older siblings, while studying on the South Island, are also active surf life savers as well.

Hannah has also put her prowess to practical use with two major rescues. In 2013,

when she was 14, and had just qualified as a lifeguard and was on her own at Mangawhai Beach after the funded lifeguard season had ended, she pulled three grown men out of a rip. “They had gone out with one surf board between them. The surf was pretty big. I wouldn’t have gone in the water that day.

But I swam out and told them what to do,” she says.

Last year, she and her older sister Lauren were at the same spot near their family beach house and saw a group of swimmers being swept onto a rock in huge surf. “That was pretty scary because there was a young boy who was beaten against the rocks with every wave. I ran and got him just before he was swept into the estuary,” she says.

Hannah says her father Nick is the inspiration for the siblings’ passion for the sport.

“He used to be into SLS when he lived in South Africa and wanted us to learn what he knew,” she says. Hannah started Nippers at Mangawhai aged four and says the water feels like home to her now. “I just love waves,” she says.

During the summer, Hannah also swims for the Mt Eden Swim Club and kayaks at Lake Pupuke. “And every winter I like to try a different sport,” she says, including underwater hockey and water polo. This winter, she wants to stay on dry land and play soccer.

Composter continues Devonport’s green tradition

Devonport is once again leading New Zealand in recycling with a local firm spearheading the introduction of the country’s first commercial scale composter – sited at the Navy.

The “Big Hanna” composter was formally handed over last week. It was brought into the country by Big Hanna Composter Ltd, whose directors are longtime Devonport residents Joy and Shaun Bowler.

Shaun Bowler saw the opportunity for commercial composting in New Zealand during his many years working in sustainable business consulting and for the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority.

Big Hanna was manufactured in Sweden especially for the Royal New Zealand Navy and is only the second such unit operating in the Southern Hemisphere.

Bowler said 25% of food waste in New Zealand went to landfill and he was delighted the New Zealand Defence Force, through the Navy, was leading by example with the composter.

He hoped other Big Hannas would follow on around the country.

Navy senior environmental officer Sarah Strong, who coordinated the project, said Bowler had first approached the Navy in 2010 and she was delighted that the composter was finally installed and operational.

One of the key upsides was that there was no longer any need to have bins for food scraps, and the fact that Big Hanna was enclosed eliminated rodent problems, she said.

Cheltenham Beach going to the dogs?

There appear to be more dogs using Cheltenham beach than people. The owners fall into two categories.

The first group are responsible owners who use the beach at the appropriate times and keep a check on their dog and its business.

The second group are the reason for my letter. It seems the beach is a playground, specifically for dogs. The owner is either engrossed in conversation with no concern for the dog, it’s behaviour or its antics, or feels the dog “is just a puppy” and has carte blanche to do what it likes. As I tend to swim most days, I find it most disconcerting that these owners have little regard for people who are attempting to enjoy the beach, the sunshine etc.

Surely the beach is there for the benefit of people first. The situation appears out of control.

How do other readers and inhabitants of Cheltenham feel. Is it time to ban dogs completely???

i-SITE ignorance continues

I have seen several roadside billboards lately offering help from our local politician.

I can’t last remember any politician offering help outside of an election time, so on the surface this offer looks good. The irony is the sign is on Lake Rd, the very road that is chaos through bad paint-marking.

Maggie has had the local meetings with Auckland Transport (AT) people and other local councillors in tow: at the time she was doing an information evening for harbour filling for later reclaimed land sales at wholesale price specials to one lucky punter.

AT said at that meeting it would be 10 years before they reinstated the left turn into Bardia and put up no-dawdling signs.

Maggie is Minister for the Environment, and the most serious attack on our local area is this legislation, which allows reclaimation now, to be free-holded later and hocked off.

Our seabeds have become development opportunities, as we have seen attempted in Ngatiranga Bay decades ago. In those days the tip manager could push rubbish into the harbour. It was only mangrove they said then.

That is the motive to filling our shipping dock areas, creating potential freehold titles to be later sold in backroom deals. I am told several influential people are lining up these opportunities, flying in the face of our community, and mocking the Environment Court.

To avoid effecting the flow of our harbour one could easily build a wharf that allows sea life to flow under it; however that scenario does not facilitate the freehold, wholesale plundering, for those in privileged positions to obtain as assets. Imagine the potential apartment living areas that can be sold by Ports of Auckland and, given special housing designation in future, which is being silently organised as we speak. It is reality now that the government has allowed such antics, that smart people are aligning themselves for these outstanding real estate opportunities not seen in recent history. We had evolved decent conservation policies recognising the values of our foreshore and seabed areas, now at risk by legislation placed without public consultation.

We are Devonport residents and on Sunday as we had overseas visitors arriving the next day, my husband made a special trek out to the i-SITE office at the end of the wharf to get information on the Auckland Arts Festival for our guests. What festival? The woman behind the counter had no knowledge of an Arts Festival in Auckland, however she thought there might be an Art exhibition in Howick !! This is quite unacceptable from an Auckland information centre when they are not aware of a city-wide event of this magnitude M Mitchell

Alternatives to port on Auckland waterfront have huge impacts It is ironic to see guardians of our built heritage waving placards saying “No to Port”, when it was the reclamations for the port by earlier generations that have provided most of the city’s precincts that are now treasured as “historic”. Any such activity today is now met with stiff opposition and many seem to want the port gone entirely from the Waitemata Harbour, just as if it was a discretionary facility that could easily be shunted elsewhere or shut down completely. Surely, that could be done,

but at what price?

The only reason why Auckland has grown to its size is the unique suitability as a commercial port, and that function has grown with the city. Very few places, if any, in the upper North Island offer the combination of deep water, shelter from sea swells and vicinity to population centre that have made Auckland an ideal location for handling cargo ever since overseas trade commenced. Now the historic source of the region’s prosperity has grown too noisy, unsightly or unfashionable for some, and further expansion to keep pace with demand for overseas transport is becoming a political football.

cated elsewhere, it will have to be worked out first how the industrial hub in South Auckland was going to be served: goods trains thundering on double tracks day and night through all of West Auckland to haul a thousand containers every day over 150km from Marsden Point?

Dry out the ecologically sensitive mudflats of Whangarei Harbour and fill in the Marsden Cove marina precinct to make space for cargo handling? Or ruin the entire Manukau harbour system by constantly dredging the bar and deep channels up to Onehunga? Or sacrifice the Tauranga harbour entrance and what’s left of their waterfront? Just so that we Jafas can build more fancy waterfront apartments and coastal promenades?

Before we are talking about shutting down the port of Auckland, we need to be clear what had to be scarified to replicate the freight handling capacity of the existing historic port location. The environmental impact of any alternative development would make the Lake Manapouri development look like a primary school project – not to mention the massive financial burden.

Clear lines of sight: Stout and Mitchells Julie Stout, her long-time partner David Mitchell and his son Julian Mitchell are passionate about buildings and their surroundings, especially around Auckland. Last month, the architects and urban planners organised a protest on Queens Wharf objecting to Ports of Auckland plans to expand Bledisloe Wharf into the Waitemata Harbour. They spoke to Maire Vieth.

It was Julie Stout’s before-and-after montage that really set the debate alight. In the “before” harbour view from Queens Wharf, your eyes travel past Bean Rock to Browns Island and Waiheke. In the “after” view, a mock-up of the Ports of Auckland Limited (POAL) 90-metre wharf extension cuts off the view at the Devonport ferry building. North Head is already out of sight.

Hours after the montage became public ,POAL said Stout had drawn two lamp posts out of proportion and disguised the transparency of the piles under the wharves. But Stout says her montage was, if anything, “minimalist” because it does not include cranes or berthed container ships and because POAL have been open about their future plans to reclaim the land under the wharf piles.

Within a year, Julie Stout and David Mitchell planted the seed for their move to Narrow Neck. While working on a house on Old Lake Rd, they spotted an empty lot two doors down.

They bought it and slowly started building a contemporary home with concrete walls and corrugated plastic roofs, which raised eyebrows just north of Devonport’s heritage zone.

Stout says it was a bit like “Survivor North Shore” for her and David Mitchell. “In 2007, we built a small studio and lived in there for 18 months while the house was built, with all our earthly possessions, a building site next door and no fences around us. Everyone would stand out on the street and stare at us and say ‘What the hell is going on there?’ People would discuss and argue while we were inside going aaarrrgggghhh,” she says.

The architecture community loved the house. In 2009, it won the New Zealand Institute of Architecture (NZIA) Auckland Award, and a year later it was a finalist for NZIA Home of the Year.There have been other awards. Last year, Stout won the Chrystall Excellence Award handed out by Architecture + Women New Zealand. The firm has two Home of the Year winners (2005 and 2009) to its name and, in 2005, David Mitchell received the NZIA Gold Medal for his contribution to the theory and practice of architecture. The theory part had a lot to do with his 1984 book The Elegant Shed, which was turned into a six-part TV documentary the same year.

In Devonport, David and Julian Mitchell have also been quietly engaged in the debate about the new Devonport Library, arguing alongside other local architects that it should not sit on Windsor Reserve but on the Devonport Wharf.

What do they think now? “It’s a lovely building in the wrong place. Victoria Rd is a 19thcentury street with a park and the sea on one side. Having the library there puts something between us and the park. That said, it’s a nice building,” says David.

David Mitchell also likes the place the new library created on its street side. “The architects gave us transparency and a kind of chatter between the building and the exterior and it works,” he says.

The new Marine Square is a winner, all three agree. “It’s terrific. We just need more of it inside of the wharf building, at the very least a whole lot of walls blown out,” says Julian.

The discussion of urban design ideas is a daily fare in the Mitchell/Stout office and family. “We constantly talk about ideas. We do it all the time. We don’t even think about it as work,” says Stout. David agrees. “We are surrounded by architects. Julian’s partner is an architect. Her father is an architect. Her brother is an architect. And my brother-in-law is an architect,” he says.

David has worked in and around the Waitemata Harbour since 1960, when, straight after architecture school, he joined the Group Architects office in the Ferry building. When the then Auckland Harbour Board proposed to sell the city block between Quay, Customs,

Albert and Queen Streets, Mitchell objected to what he calls the “shemozzle of Queen Elizabeth Square, the creation of uninhabitable public space.”

“When the final development scheme was published in the paper, we realised that it was going to give rotten public space, that it would be cold and windy and that no one would want to go there. We built a wind tunnel and put a lamp to simulate the sun to demonstrate it. In the end they built it, and they are now going to rebuild it,” he says.

Over the last 50 years, there has been progress, including a consciousness that pedestrian areas like Elliot and Fort Sts are important, he says.

“The argument is being held as a sort of legal or planning matter, when it really is about a vision for our city” – Julian Mitchell He and Julie Stout have been part of the progress and Auckland’s early waterfront development. In the 1990s, they worked on the redevelopment of the Viaduct Basin from afar, while sailing around Asia and Europe. Says Julie: “The Viaduct Basin was vacated after the port moved on, a real dump, and acres of asphalt. The developers wanted to put a multiplex where the hotel is now. They were anxious people wouldn’t come otherwise. That is how new the idea of going down to the water was then. We managed to talk them out of it (the movie theatre),” she says.

In 2000, Stout and Mitchell returned from overseas. Stout says when she drove down Queen St for the first time, she wanted to cry about how unloved it looked. She got involved in In Auckland’s Institute of Architects branch, which she chaired from 2002 - 2004, working on urban issues.

Stout generally has a positive attitude and says Dick Hubbard’s 2004 mayoral campaign has made a big difference to Auckland’s future.

on our submission to him,” she says. Hubbard increased council’s urban design department and established the role of Auckland’s Urban Design Champion, currently held by yet another Devonporter, Ludo Campbell-Reid. In 2005, Stout was appointed to Hubbard’s Taskforce on Urban Planning. “Since then a whole train was set in motion, including the Auckland Plan, which is a really good document about how we should shape our city. So the beginnings are there,” she says.

Stout continues to fight issues through Urban Auckland. “We got involved with the St James Theatre and got a ruling that aesthetics are important in a resource consent, which is quite fundamental,” she says.

But Julian Mitchell, who is on the board of Auckland’s Civic Trust, another organisation opposing the Bledisloe Wharf extension, is frustrated by the state of things. He says council only pays lip service to the architectural community. “They talk about getting us around the table and having a transparent conversation, but they don’t really mean that. We’ll get around the table. We’ll get around the table every day, but we actually get blocked by council,” he says.

The POAL-approved finger wharves are a case in point, he says. “One of the most infuriating things to me is that we see the argument is being held as a sort of legal or planning matter, when it really is about a vision for our city,” he says.

Thefts rock moored boats A spate of thefts from boats moored off King Edward Parade has been reported to Devonport Community Constable Jackie Strickland. “Owners should ensure that they are checking their boats regularly, have good locks on their hatches, are stowing away as much gear as possible as opposed to leaving it on the deck. If they have an auxiliary outboard on a bracket, they should make sure it is padlocked on with a good strong padlock,” Strickland says.

helps with keeping your boat safe too.

“Boat owners should talk to other boat owners nearby and be the eyes and ears for each other. If anyone is seen in and around a yacht/launch, on a dinghy or kayak, don’t be afraid to ask the person who they are and what they are doing.

Bob happy on the water and at Wakatere Lifelong Devonport resident, yachtie and Wakatere Boating Club life member Bob Gillies has died.

Gillies helped hundreds of Wakatere juniors get a taste for the sea either through Waterwise or giving his time to crew for fledgling sailors.

Most of his life was spent little more than a stone’s throw from Wakatere.

Gillies was born in 1928, at the naval hospital in Stanley Bay. He was the only child of Ethel, a nurse and Reginald, a naval engineer, who both served in World War 1 and met on board the ship that brought them to New Zealand from England.

He spent his early years in Summer St in Stanley Point and then moved to Wairoa Rd, where he would become established in Narrow Neck for the next seven decades.

Gillies attended Vauxhall School and then Takapuna Grammar. The World War 2 period became Gillies’ formative yachting years. Too young to enlist and with the only men around town seemingly senior citizens, he and his mates had free rein on Waitemata Harbour and made it their home.

At 16 his father passed away and Gillies was forced to leave Takapuna Grammar, to support the family. He worked briefly as a dental technician making false teeth, but soon started a carpentry apprenticeship under Alf Miller. Together they built a number of homes in Devonport, around the North Shore and in Ponsonby. Gillies would continue building for the next 20 years; he moved out of house building into commercial and industrial roofing, and then into Marley where he specialised in plastics for plumbing and guttering.

Gillies was always a keen sportsman, with yachting and running his passions, During his late teens and early 20s he was a competitive cross-country and middle-distance runner, regularly selected for Auckland teams and winning a score of local and national titles. His runner’s physique and a lifetime of exercise would see him in great shape for most of his life.

Running later gave way to yachting, and the social aspect was as intrinsic as the competitive side. Yachting seemed to combine everything

Gillies got into Frostbites and he used to crew for the juniors at Wakatere, winning around 150 medals over the course of 10 years.

He played down his successes and told the Flagstaff in a 2008 interview: “If you sail a lot of races you’re going to win some.”

“I’m very patient, very good with kids, but I’m actually not that good. I never represented New Zealand, or went to the Olympic Games ...

I never won a national championship.”

“I just did pretty good mucking around,” he told the Flagstaff.

The proudest moment in his sailing career was winning the Auckland Anniversary Regatta

He involved himself with the early Waterwise scheme, and devoted many hours to the Wakatere Boating Club of which he was so proud.

“It’s a beautiful asset both for the yachting and wider community. We have weddings there, funerals, bridge afternoons. It’s very accessible and family-orientated,” he told the Flagstaff.

Son Fraser said: “Bob liked the odd wedding, he liked the pitter-patter of tiny feet. He liked a drink, a long chat and providing good counsel.

“But what Bob really liked was a good yacht race and mucking around in boats.”

“If there was a single thing that really defined him, during his journey through life, it was sailing. This was his nirvana, his happy place and his never-waning passion.”

Peace Plays a total theatrical experience

Liz Gill and Kath Hair in Hautu The Auckland premiere of Peace Plays will be held at the Rose Centre, reflecting Devonport’s status as the first local authority in the country to declare itself nuclear-free and the North Shore becoming a peace city in 2009.

Company Theatre is presenting two plays

by Kathleen Gallagher from her Peace Plays collection – Hautu and Charlie Bloom – at the Rose Centre until 28 March.

Hautu is set in a detention centre for conscientious objectors during the Second World War and Charlie Bloom in Auckland 20 years after the nuclear testing in Muroroa in the 1960s.

The script is overlaid with music, sound, lights and visual effects to create a total theatrical experience, and the cast has explored the concept of peace and the effect of war on their characters in great detail, through workshops (including one with Kathleen Gallagher), and discussions.

After the matinee performances there will be an opportunity for the audience to join the cast in reflecting on their own feelings about peace, especially in the context of the production.

Vacated property (above) becomes a firefighters’ training ground A Devonport waterfront home has provided local firefighters with the training opportunity of a lifetime.

During the week prior to the demolition of the house at 49 King Edward Parade, firefighters filled it with artificial smoke to simulate blind search and rescue missions, turned it into a pretend P-lab to practise safe withdrawals, rescued people from the roof and extinguished fake fires with real water.

Station Officer Warren Tucker says the exercises have been an invaluable real-life experience for both volunteer and professional staff. “We usually train at a training facility but once you have been there twice, you can’t help but know the layout and that limits how much you can learn,” he says.

The 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom, 2-storey house “put the guys under a bit of pressure,” he says, so they learned a lot and improved their skills.

“We put black plastic over the windows and put furniture and obstacles everywhere. We had people in there playing victims and the staff had to find them in the total dark and bring them out safely,” he says.

The practice scenario of a fire in a P-lab had containers full of fluids, glass jars and cookers on the kitchen bench. “That is a situation you can come across anywhere, including Devonport, and it changes the emphasis of what we do completely. The guys have to just focus on getting out and on doing that safely,” Tucker says.

It was Tucker’s idea. “I had read about the house having to be demolished in the Flagstaff and went down there and left a note for the owner. He called me back and was keen on the idea,” he says.

Graham Carter had put the house on TradeMe for removal but found that the high transport cost quickly turned potential buyers away.

He says it was a no-brainer when Tucker called after reading about the house in the Flagstaff.

“I love the fire brigade’s community spirit and thought it was a great way to put the place to good use before the demolition team arrived,” Carter says. His neighbours were supportive of the idea too, he says.

On their last night, Devonport’s volunteers practised clearing the garage of smoke using nothing but a hose.

Firefighter Grant Anderson, says locals walking past had been curious about what was going on. “Hopefully some of them will be inspired and want to join us. Our full complement is 18 and we are close to that, but we are always keen to talk to new people,” he said.

Last Wednesday at 3 am, the top part of the house was removed on a trailer. The rest of the house was destroyed that day.

Carter hopes to start building in April and move into his new house early next year.

Tucker said it was a great gesture from the houseowner to let the firefighters train there.

Buses bring tourists but spending mixed

Close to 50 buses carrying around 2,000 cruise ship tourists came to Devonport over two days last week, each spending about an hour here before heading off again. But the visits had mixed results for local businesses.

Anthony Curach, the owner of the Stone Oven, says he sold about five extra coffees on the day the Costas cruise ship guests were in Devonport, and was disappointed.

“A few years ago you knew when boats were in town. We sometimes had people queue up outside the café,” says Curach. But

he reckons that with Auckland Council promoting numerous new eateries at Wynyard Quarter, most of them don’t find their way to Devonport’s cafes and restaurants any more.

“It almost looks as if council has a vested interest in keeping the tourists over there where new eateries are on council land and possibly rented at subsidised rates. Here in Devonport, our businesses pay market rents and rates, so that is not exactly fair competition,” he says. A lot of cruise ship passengers these days tended to eat meals

We had a photo of the boat arriving in the window and some cruise ship specials too. You have to grab the opportunities as they present themselves and if you get 2,000 people dumped at your doorstep something’s got to happen,” he says.

Other businesses that did not notice any increase in sales were Nord, Wallis, House of Toys and The Glass House. However Yogurt Story and Devonport Arts and Gifts noticed a definite increase in sales, their staff said. Second-hand book store Bookmark said several French people came looking for books on Victorian Auckland and New Zealand related subjects.

Manuka manager Salota Aleke said once some of the visitors sat down for coffees outside, others who recognised them sat down also. Mecca owner Sam Canjir did not find the same to be true. “They only came to use the toilets and to ask questions, such as where the chemist is and where they can get free Wi-Fi. I sent them to the new library,” he says.

Caring for the environment Fifteen dedicated TGS students gathered at Takapuna Beach recently after school to keep the shore rubbish-free. The clean-up proved to be an enjoyable and successful event with over 3 kg of litter collected in under one hour.

This beach clean-up was organised by the leaders of the TGS Environmental Committee - Grace Cowley, Emilly Fan and Alice Wu – as part of New Zealand’s annual Seaweek, taking place between 28 February to 8 March. Seaweek was first held in New Zealand in 1992 and continues to be celebrated by passionate young environmentalists.

“I had always believed Takapuna Beach to be relatively tidy but the amount of plastic bags, bottles and food wrappers we found proved me wrong,” said Grace.

In the lead-up to this event, beautiful hand-drawn posters were displayed across the school. “I made sure to design something that would be eye-catching and appealing,” said Alice.

The rubbish collected will be used as part of an ‘art’ competition in the following weeks

with prizes for the most creative students.

Emilly commented: “We hope this will bring further awareness of the negative impact of rubbish on our environment as well as en-

courage more people to come along to our future clean-ups.”

Training to be good peer leaders Three days of training, filled with workshops about sexual health, sexuality and support for the new members of the Takapuna Grammar PSSP (Peer Sexuality Support Program), was a life-changing experience for six of our senior students.

“When people ask me to describe Hui I genuinely find it one of the hardest things to do,” says student leader, Augustine Morgan-Guthrie. “Those four days really do change you. If it were physically possible to take every human being on earth to Hui, I totally would. The world would be a better place.”

Students from six schools from across Auckland – Waiheke High School, Glenfield College, Western Springs College, Mt Roskill Grammar, Auckland Girls Grammar and of course, Takapuna Grammar – gathered at a campsite in Huia on the morning of 11th February to be thrown almost immediately into a workshop with 28 strangers about sex. Although a little awkward at first, everyone eventually got to be comfortable around each other. “It felt surreal how

much everyone was accepted,” says Scott Moore, one of the new TGS PSSP members – “Life changing.”

“It’s a really great experience and helps you learn a lot about yourself and others, and helps give you strength and confidence as a person to develop more,” said Waiheke High School and Western Springs College students, Bianca Beauchamp and Brooke Taylor.

After the first day the students and the

staff all bonded through good food and full-on days filled with workshops about sexual health, diversity, relationships and many more issues that may come up while being in sexuality-support roles. Ranging from heavy discussions that really got students thinking about where their morals lie, to overly-competitive hand-clapping games, strong friendships developed over the course of three days.

Rowing in the rain Wet, windy and wild weather made for an interesting regatta at the North Island Secondary School rowing champs. However 20-knot gusts and torrential rain did not stop the 31-strong team of rowers from taking to the water and giving it their all.

The first day of heats began smoothly on Friday 6 March with most rowers competing in three to five events. The weather took a turn for the worst and some of the last events of day were postponed. Semi and C-finals began on Saturday, but unfortunately the persistent bad weather caused most C-finals to be cancelled. Sunday was finals day with the club in two A-finals and five B-Finals.

Particular success went to Year 12 student Tom Ferguson, who placed third in his Under-17 single scull heat, fourth in the semis and seventh in the A-final, which is a really big achievement putting him in the top seven in the North Island.

Held at Lake Karapiro in Cambridge in the first weekend of March, this event is the last regatta of the season before nationals later this month, this year also being held at Lake Karapiro.

Ted talk for TGS rugby teams

School spirit… Takapuna Grammar pupils performed an emotional haka prior to the match Takapuna Grammar rugby players got some frank advice from World Cup winning coach Sir Graham Henry last week, after the school was well beaten by visiting Canadian sides Shawnigan Lakes from Vancouver.

“TGS needs to get a scrum coach and work on its set pieces,” Henry said after watching TGS first XV and academy sides.

After the matches he give a detailed analysis to the players.

TGS looked good at times from broken play but “the Canadian side was too good at the set pieces.”

The first XV also had runners who tended to lose support and consequently turn over the ball, Henry said.

The famous coach of the 2011 Rugby World Cup side was at the school for work he is doing with The Rugby Site, which is run by Devonport local Phil A critical eye… former Rugby World Cup winning coach Connolly.

Overall Henry was delighted with Sir Graham “Ted” Henry analyses the form of TGS the atmosphere of the match and the turnout for the players from TGS and supporters.

Rugby Site CEO Connolly said a lifestyle piece based on Henry’s day at TGS would be placed on the website.

TGS rugby players would also be used for future training videos for the website.

Access to the site would be available to TGS players and coaches and a deal was being worked on for players and coaches at North Shore rugby club, Connolly said.

WW100 Commemorative Pavilion opened The WW100 Commemorative Pavilion and AD Boyle room was officially opened on March 5 at the Navy Museum, Torpedo Bay by local MP Maggie Barry.

The centrepiece of the pavilion is a sculpture

by Devonport artist Helen Pollock called As Above, So Below and was commissioned by the museum. The new additions are intended as places of reflection and contemplation. They are now open to the public and the multi-purpose space is designed for education programmes, lectures, temporary exhibitions and functions.

Polllock’s bronze and water sculpture acknowledges the struggle and sacrifice of those who served at sea during World War 1, depicting the nobility of their commitment and acknowledging the often appalling conditions they had to endure.

It features an ‘archaic’ bronze ladder stretching seemingly infinitely above and below – a nautical Jacob’s ladder and a universal symbol of ascent. It was dedicated by the Bishop of Auckland and the Navy Chaplain.

THe navy CoMMuniTy newsleTTer navy’s new seaMansHiP TraininG aids FaCiliTy oPens The Navy’s new Seamanship Training Aids Facility at Devonport Naval Base was officially opened on 9 March by Chief of Navy RADM Jack Steer and LT CDR (ret) Bill Morley, after whom the building has been named.

The facility is a large warehouse that contains realistic working environments for seamanship training—life-size ship replicas made to scale from the original ship design drawings.

The facility houses an Inshore Patrol Vessel forecastle, an Offshore Patrol Vessel midship and quarterdeck, a Replenishment At Sea tower and a main mast working at heights tower.

Using those assets the Navy can now train berthing, slipping, anchoring, anchoring to a buoy, towing, working at heights, replenishment at sea and awning assembly to an on-the-job standard prior to any trainees stepping foot on working platforms.

The facility will be used by all ranks and trades and allows a consistency of training, safer and more experienced personnel joining the ships and the releasing of critical operational ships to conduct Governmentdirected outputs rather than on-the-job training.

The lead contractor was Lockheed Martin Global, who used local companies such as South Pacific Industrial, Opus, the Shed Company and Legacy to complete the project.

The replica ships have been built to the same specifications as those in the Fleet and much of the specialist equipment has been supplied by Navy to ensure it replicates that which is seen on our vessels.

The Navy held a competition to name the new facility, with the winning entry submitted

by CAPT Jim Gilmour.

LT CDR Morley served for 40 years as both a Gunnery Instructor and, in the later stages of his career, as an officer. On 15 March 1970 Bill was involved in an incident on HMNZS WAIKATO in Wellington Harbour.

He and two colleagues were washed overboard. One of the trio died from injuries received in the initial wash-off, however, Bill and the forecastle officer LT CDR Mair managed to stay afloat with just a life ring (they were not wearing life jackets). After nearly two hours in the water they were rescued by helicopter, due to the ship not being able to turn around as it was too rough.

There is a phase two for this project called the “Waterside Trainer.” It is expected to provide external realistic working environments such as a Vest Davit and Hiab crane for the launch and recovery of seaboats; an accommodation ladder; a swimmer of the watch gantry; and a pilot ladder. All these will be situated on a wharf or pontoon structure and will be full working pieces of equipment.

“It’s a step change for the way we train our Navy,” the Chief of Navy says. “The things we can do in there are extraordinary. We can train our people in a controlled environment.”
