Belmont Intermediate team wins national literature quiz The Belmont Intermediate School (BIS) Lit Quiz team is preparing for the world champs following their win at the nationals last week.

The team of four Year 8 students, along with their coach Renae Kettle, flew to Wellington last Sunday to compete against 15 other teams from around the country.

“It was terrifying,” says Giselle den Breems (12).

“We tied sixth last year and knew we needed to be a lot braver on the buzzer this time around.”

The BIS team was coming third after the first round, but shot ahead and ended up winning by 15 points.

“We didn’t have such great expectations,” says Margot Pettitt (12) “We have really good team spirit, and there’s no huge egos in the team.”

The group have been close friends since starting BIS in 2017 and say that the key to the quiz is having fun and not taking things too seriously.

It is the third time a BIS team has won the national literature quiz. “We are very proud,” says principal Nick Hill.

The 2018 Kids’ Lit Quiz World Final is being held in Auckland in July, and the team is excited to meet other students from around the world. “We get to stay in a hotel for a week, go to Hobbiton and listen to guest authors speak” they say.

There’s no time to stop and celebrate yet though.

Margot says: “We only have three weeks to prepare, so we’re gonna be ramping it up.”

Major slips at Polly’s Park Two large slips at Polly’s Park on the Ngataringa Bay foreshore have closed the coastal walkway.

The park is on a 20-metre marginal strip next to the Ryman Village construction site.

Neighbour Iain Rea estimated the slips were around 700–1000 cubic metres.

The coastal strip was lovingly restored over decades to a popular path by the late Polly Pollock.

“It’s very sad,” said Rea. The marginal strip is owned by Ngati Whatua but administered by the Department of Conservation.

Huge turnout to Vauxhall art show

Flash mob… dancers put on a surprise show at the Vauxhall art show family day More than 5000 people attended the Vauxhall School Exhibition of Fine Art (VEFA) last weekend.

The gala opening, the exhibition, and family day were all well attended and around $350,000 worth of art was sold.

Thirty workshops were run over the weekend including tutorials by artists Component and Michel Tuffery.

Laura Taylor, VEFA convenor says, “We are thrilled for the artists and also for the school”, which takes a commission on

every piece of art sold.

The new Family Festival Day on Sunday was a hit, attracting hundreds of families, and ensuring the sales desk was kept busy right up until closing at 3pm Sunday.

DevonportProperty.nz Report — May 2018 The property market remains steady with 59 sales concluded in the three months to May, with no change year-on-year.

However, the median sale price is reflecting the demand in the market with an 11% rise to $1.75m. This places the local market in line with, or slightly ahead of, the wider Auckland market, where sales volumes have started to pick up but where median prices are fairly static — indicating that Devonport remains a suburb in demand, with a steady pool of active buyers.

The available inventory of properties on the market rose slightly in May to 49, largely the result of an increase in new listings (74 in the past three months). This is encouraging for those buyers out there in the market, as it offers greater choice, something the market has been lacking for the past few months. However, the winter

added to the available selection across all price ranges, leaving a total of 39 houses for sale at the end of the month.

How many of us living from Belmont south have been driving ‘on orange’ for a couple of days, and have had to make that slightly nerveracking drive along Lake Rd, hoping to get to the BP service station before running out? Six automated pumps are included in the Gull plan.

Given the increasing number of electric vehicles on the roads, I wonder if Gull should have included a power-up facility as well?

I’m sad to see the retirement of John Kelly, a dentist in Devonport for 28 years, and my own dentist for many of those. John was quietly spoken with a gentle and calm chairside manner.

We did have one memorable moment. In my late 40s, he said I had the teeth of a 25-year-old.

While the rest of my body has declined at a rate of knots, I’ve dined out on this comment for years. So thanks for that John, and your contribution to Devonport dental health.

Top-of-the-table TGS to play Rosmini this weekend The TGS 1st XV is running hot this season and joint top of the table in the North Harbour secondary schools rugby competition after the first round of matches.

TGS has not lost in 2018 and followed up a 27-all draw with Westlake two weeks ago with a 25-20 away win against Whangarei Boys last Saturday.

TGS plays Rosmini at home this Saturday at 12 noon in a grudge match. Rosmini is third on the ladder and lost to TGS 20-7 in the first round.

School buildings will have different protection says ministry Historic Stanley Bay School buildings will be protected under an “Education Designation” by the Ministry of Education.

The heritage status of the buildings was included in the North Shore City District Plan but was not automatically picked up in the Auckland Unitary Plan.

A move to have them included in the plan as protected has been opposed by the ministry, which alarmed Devonport Heritage 2017.

However, the ministry says to “ensure ongoing protection of these buildings, we are seeking to include their heritage status in our Education Designation, which involves

delisting the buildings from the Historic Buildings register.

“This approach will provide long-term protection for these buildings that cannot be altered by anyone else, unlike the provisions of a plan where any individual can apply to make changes,” Ministry of Education infrastructure services head Kim Shannon said in a letter to Devonport Heritage 2017.

But Trish Deans of Heritage 2017 is unsure whether the new status would offer better protection than the Auckland Unitary Plan and has sought advice from council officers.

Rising to the Everest challenge from Takarunga

Top of the morning... Red Lunday de Waal at the Takarunga/Mt Victoria summit When Red Lunday de Waal reached the summit of Takarunga/Mt Victoria at dawn on 31 May, Everest was top of mind. She was one of 100 people, New Zealand-wide, who responded to a ‘Summit Challenge’ issued by the Himalayan Trust, and climbed 8848 vertical metres during the month of May. The event paid homage to Sir Edmund

Hillary’s 8848-metre climb to the Everest summit on 29 May 1953.

To mark the 65th anniversary of that first Everest ascent, de Waal began on 1 May by climbing Mt Victoria at dawn, then going on to ascend the rest of Auckland’s volcanic maunga, including Rangitoto, and even kayaking out to include Motukorea Browns

Island. She reached the final Everest tally in the Waitakeres on 29 May, but decided to finish where she’d started – adding the extra 87m height of Devonport’s presiding maunga.

Local resident Prue Smith, general manager of the Himalayan Trust, was one of the organisers of the event, which raised $45,000 for schools and healthcare in Nepal.

Many options to barrier arm on Takarunga/Mt Victoria A barrier arm limiting vehicle access to the mountain in the first instance is to my mind not likely to encourage all locals and visitors to embrace the pedestrian-only concept. Why not start with installing appropriate signage educating and celebrating the heritage of the maunga and spiritual significance for all who have lived on and around it; establishing more and enhancing existing walking tracks to make the planned pedestrian access more accessible to the able-bodied, children, elderly and mobility-assisted; enhancing native planting and installing more benches for walkers to access; and sharing the authority’s ideas for

future spiritual and cultural activities with the Devonport community?

All of these positive initiatives I believe could have paved the way then for the eventual change to restricted vehicle access and avoided some of the current level of animosity. A public notification in March 2016, referring to limiting vehicle access to all Auckland maunga, cannot replace notified meetings directly with the community to identify issues specific to this unique village.

Views on Mt Victoria opinion or racism?

When there is a lack of intelligence, the racist card is produced. There is no logical reason for the care of Mt. Victoria to be handed over to Maori. Folk will be deprived of driving their cars up to do nothing other than enjoying the experience of being there.

If you think that handing over Mt. Victoria is about the “care of the mountain” you are indeed ignorant. It is about control and power by a small minority of backwardlooking people who are being patronised, pandered to and financed by “politically correct” morons.

It is again patronising and part of the ‘Maori-isation’ of signage and messages on council, library and government depts. etc, which is irritating in the extreme.

Regarding the recent Devonport meeting with the authority – why in NZ has the spelling of the word “opinion” been changed to “racist”?

Fountain dies again

A few weeks ago (Flagstaff 20 April) I wrote to commend whoever arranged/ refurbished the memorial fountain near the Devonport Library. For about a week after it was reinvented it burbled, then splattered, then died again, its water turned off.

Who? What? Why? When? Will we ever see it flow again?

Surfing a green Devonport wave

Since her announcement on Facebook – that she was sending back her council rubbish bin – went viral, locally at least, Niccy Fraser has become a grass-roots example of Devonport’s Zero Waste movement. She tells Rob Drent about how her love of the ocean and learning to surf inspired a move to a greener lifestyle.

The pictures portray an idyllic setting, beautiful light on slow chunky waves.

“What the photos don’t show is all the plastic floating underneath; there were plastic bags everywhere,” Fraser says.

It was a love of the ocean, and learning to surf in particular, that were the catalysts to Fraser upping the ante towards a zero-waste home.

She has been an ocean swimmer for 20 years, and had already been bothered by plastic polluting the ocean.

“What really motived me was starting to surf,” she says.

At first, the 58-year-old cognitive therapist thought she “was too old”. But she likes a challenge, so she started off on the waves at Great Barrier Island, moving onto Muriwai out west, then Mangawhai and Forestry on the east coast. These days, she has a longboard and two shortboards and gets out on the water whenever she can.

At her home of 23 years at North Ave, just a few hundred metres from Narrow Neck Beach, she got to thinking about the “waste that goes off my property that will end up at the beach and then in the sea.

“For the last two years, all of our family have been committed to recycling every scrap of paper.” This spread to other aspects of the home as well. And Fraser found she became increasingly in tune with possibility of zero waste.

Seeing mountain climber and motivational speaker Mike Allsop at a conference got her thinking about personal goals. And the wider surfing community was inspirational

as well, with 2017 world number one John John Florence preaching the waste-reduction message.

In January, Fraser decided to go zero waste – something she felt her household (husband Simon, son Zac and cat Milly) could achieve.

Another resolution was to go public with her personal waste-management goals in an effort to help and inspire others. She put a post up on the Devonport Locals Facebook page and got “20 responses straight away”. Since then, she has twice made presentations about her zero-waste project, including last week at Devonport Library to a group of committed similarly minded locals.

Barely six months after her zero-waste decision, Fraser reckons only one per cent of her waste is destined for landfill.

A key move was to get rid of her council rubbish bin, a pledge she announced on Facebook. If it was “out there” in public she felt there was no coming back.

“It felt really weird to have it put up on Facebook, but it meant I had to do it.”

One person contacted her to say she was bound to become one of those people who was out late at night creeping around putting rubbish in other people’s bins.

“I hope I don’t turn into one of those!” she says.

“It’s things like when you go to the dry cleaners and you get given a massive plastic sleeve to take the clothes home – I just leave it behind.”

She says solving problems is “another form of creativity”.

In terms of reducing: “Buying less and reducing what we buy…it’s quite liberating.”

Reusing or repairing can range from “my husband cutting down an old pair of jeans to a pair of shorts”, to buying quality that will last. For example, instead of buying a $10 umbrella that would last a few weeks, Fraser bought a Blunt umbrella for close to $100 about eight years ago. When it broke recently, she went into Firefly and they sent it back to the company, which fixed it for free.

Recently, a computer repair man came round and took away all the cords and phone connections the family had built up over the years.

Fraser has found a key to waste reduction is incorporating small, incremental changes into normal household routines, rather than making a cold-turkey life transformation.

For example, her early morning coffee is made with recyclable coffee bags. Cotton buds and cotton balls for removing makeup are replaced by a $1.20 reusable cloth.

Plastic-coated dental floss has gone in favour of a silkworm brand from Nelson, which costs $10. Bottles for household products such as dishwashing liquid, bathroom cleaners and

the like are refilled at the Devonport Recycling Centre. She’s swapped from daily to monthly contact lenses, and uses drops to keep her eyes from getting dry.

Fraser has given up cling film and aluminium foil. She uses reusable cotton-and-beeswax wraps for sandwiches and washable serviettes instead of disposable ones.

She ignores single-use products if she can.

The aim is simplicity. “The more I was thinking about this, the more it can feel overwhelming – but change can be made by little steps.”

When she leaves the house, Fraser always has bag with her (to avoid getting any plastic carrier bags with purchases), a reusable coffee cup and a plastic container (for takeaway sushi or other food bought while she’s out).

She says coffee-cup reduction is an easy way for people to start making a difference. “Pile

them up over a few days and see how much waste there is.”

Some aspects of the new green lifestyle Fraser has found slightly comical, such as rining plastic bags and hanging them out on the line. “It does feel a bit like you are in the middle of the Second World War or the Depression.”

The zero-waste ethos has become contagious for her wider family. Her daughter Lydia has started to wear “togs made out of recycled plastic bags, which are just amazing”. And Lydia and partner Rupert are investigating setting up a sustainability business.

In Fraser’s tub of non-recyclable goods are a razor, polystyrene and empty pharmaceutical packets (due to the the combination of plastic and aluminium, these prove very hard to recycle). She’s also got a container of glitter – a terrible product for the planet: small, plastic and prevalent everywhere.

Fraser hopes her story inspires others.

“It’s not about being rigid or soapboxing… but certainly as a community we can make an impact.”

“Hopefully people can share visions and initiatives about looking after the Earth and ocean better.”

In the future, Fraser hope to become involved in other local waste-minimisation initiatives with the Devonport Recycling Centre.

Auckland Council is also trialling a compost pick-up scheme in Papakura.

“I’d love it if Devonport was second place in the city they used to extend the trial.”

Bravo Benedict Lim and the DCO The portentous chords of the Coriolan Overture, which opened the Devonport Chamber Orchestra’s all-Beethoven programme on 27 May at Holy Trinity Church, Devonport, created a wonderful aura of musical tension that lasted the whole concert.

Conducting with a decisive beat, Peter Thomas held the orchestra with disciplined control. The agitation of Coriolanus, portrayed by the lower strings, balanced the lyrical themes in the upper strings, perhaps representing his wife and mother. The cellos maintained perfect rhythm in the ‘walking’ theme – not easy to achieve.

The major work performed was the Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61. One of Beethoven’s most engaging works, it was given a polished and warm reading by 16-year-old Benedict Lim. His youth was belied by his mature playing – perfect intonation, elegant phrasing and richness of tone. The orchestra never dominated, and Benedict was able to project his playing through the orchestral texture. His pianissimos were quite beautiful and his finger work very much in evidence in the solo passages and cadenzas. Woodwind instruments, particularly the bassoons and oboes, were especially noteworthy, but the orchestra as a whole played with very warm and supportive musicality.

There were some question-and-answer passages between soloist and various sections in the second movement, where each

responded to the other in great cordiality. The third movement presented Beethoven at his most joyous, with exultant horns, bassoons and strings to the fore. Benedict’s virtuosic playing in the final cadenza was breathtaking.

Benedict was accorded a rapturous reception, with many in the capacity audience standing to applaud. The audience was treated to an encore – the sarabande from Ysaye’s fourth Sonata for Solo Violin – prodigiously difficult and played with elan.

The orchestra was led confidently by Joseph Chen. How pleasing it was to see the increasing number of younger players in the ranks of the DCO – surely this augurs well for the long-term future of the orchestra.

Devonport duo dance away with the silverware Long hours of practice have paid off for a contemporary dance duo from Devonport, who snared two trophies in recent competitions.

Asha Silk (15) and Kate Kawahara (16) won the open Contemporary Duo or Trio event at the annual Auckland Combined Dance Association Competition and the Contemporary Duo prize at the Fusion Dance Competition.

The pair, in Years 11 and 12 at Takapuna Grammar School, have been taught by Eriko Finlay at Devonport’s L’Ecole de Danse since they were three and five years old Between them they study contemporary dance, American jazz, hip-hop, ballet and lyrical dance. They spend up to seven hours each week in the dance studio. Kate also studies dance at TGS and teaches young children ballet.

The pair have achieved top results in their annual New Zealand Association of Modern Dance examinations, but only began entering dance competitions last year.

Impulse, the dance they performed in the recent competitions, was choreographed by L’Ecole de Danse teachers Madeleine Powell and Bella Wilson.

Monster rat caught by Maungauika trappers Rat-trapping on Maungauika/North Head was set back by vandalism last month – but it didn’t stop a “monster rat” being caught.

Fifteen new traps laid by the Department of Conservation (DoC) were destroyed.

The department had replaced most of the traps along the coastal path with new, specially made boxes, and was frustrated to find most of these thrown over the edge and into the water.

After nine months of trapping on Maungauika/ North Head, you would think there would be no surprises for the volunteers on their twice-weekly trap checks.

However, trapper Jim Eagles came across a giant rat earlier this month that he said was “big enough to scare me”.

After a quiet period over summer, April/May was a busy time for the Maungauika trappers, with 24 rats and mice caught over the last two months.

Another trap line, in Achilles Reserve, also yielded a huge rat for Marshall Piercy, who has been trapping there over the last few months. The large number of catches in this small reserve and nearby streets suggests that it will be some time before pest-free status can be attained in Devonport.

Smart City sensors to track parking trends at wharf Sensors recording parking patterns outside Devonport Wharf have been installed as part of an Auckland Transport (AT) ‘Smart City’ trial.

The sensors record whether the space is occupied or not, with the information sent back to AT so it can track the availability of parking spaces and monitor long-term trends of how people use the car park.

AT aims to ensure the space is being used in the best way.

The Smart City technologies being trialled at the Devonport ferry terminal include: • Parking sensors to better understand the existing car parks utilisation rate • Environmental sensors to capture information such as air quality • Pedestrian-counting sensors to understand pedestrian and cyclist movement in the area • Electric-vehicle charging stations to encourage the use of lowemission vehicles So far, one set of parking sensors and an electric-car charging station have been installed.

Devonport ferry terminal was considered the ideal location for the experiment because it has: • Short-term parking • Long-term parking • Ferry terminal • Pedestrian and cycling modalities to access/leave the ferry terminal • A varying patronage throughout the day, including commuters, visitors and retirees.

AT says it is commonplace in many cities (e.g. Zurich and Barcelona) to use sensor networks to establish how people use a space and to improve urban planning.

The five-year trial will give AT a better understanding of how people in the area use the various transport modes currently available, and contribute towards shaping the future commercial development of the ferry terminal.

Restoring Takarunga Hauraki Backyard Biodiversity The impetus behind our pestfree Devonport project came from the idea of protecting our big backyard — the shorebird habitats of Shoal Bay and Ngataringa Bay — a crucial feeding ground for unique and endangered shorebirds.

What we do in our domestic backyards can play a huge part in this, which is why we are continuing to encourage peninsula residents to keep up with their rat-trapping. By getting rat numbers down to low levels, we hope to start seeing improved birdlife such as that seen by Wellington residents after a couple of years of intense community trapping, with far greater numbers of kereru and kaka in particular.

We are also keen for everyone to get planting. Although we don’t have the huge bush reserves found elsewhere in Auckland, we can help attract birds to our area by planting more birdfriendly trees. To help with this, in July we are giving away over 200 small native trees, suitable for urban backyards. These kowhai, nikau, mapou, ti-kouka and flax can be collected from the Depot Artspace, as part of the Forest has the Blues environment project, which will run from 14–25 July.

With Community Constable Jasmine Bundle Hello readers, I am pleased to report a decrease in crime on the peninsula. My belief is that this is due to residents being diligent in taking notice of suspicious behaviour and reporting it immediately.

Unfortunately, both the Bayswater and Devon Superettes were targeted by burglars in May. With an increase in the cost of cigarettes, dairies are being targeted by offenders.

Police would like the public to report any people seen acting suspiciously in the vicinity of dairies. Together as a community we can all help to support and protect our shop owners.

Four offenders were apprehended for the Bayswater Superette burglary.

June 15, 2018 others have been referred to Youth Aid. Four bicycles have recently been stolen from the Devonport ferry terminal bicycle racks, with three taken during the day on 29 May. In all incidents the locks were cut. Please report any people acting suspiciously around bicycles.

Notify security staff at the terminal of anyone loitering so they can question people in the bicycle area. D-locks are the most secure locks for bicycles as they are not easily cut open.

Two vehicles parked in the Belmont area recently had their registration plates stolen.

Stolen registration plates are often used to commit other crimes, so it is imperative that the theft of plates is reported immediately. Ensure your vehicle plates are affixed securely. Using multiple different shaped screws to affix vehicle plates can slow down an offender from removing them – e.g. star and square-head screws.

We have still been receiving the occasional report of theft from vehicles. In all reported cases no attempt has been made to steal the vehicle, but offenders are targeting bags, tools, wallets containing cash and credit cards, and medication.

Please ensure you keep your vehicles securely locked with no valuables left inside.

Improved lighting around dairies after thefts The burglaries at Devon Superette and Bayswater Superette have prompted better public lighting outside both shops.

Jasmine Bundle said after the thefts she contacted Auckland Transport, and “the lighting outside both dairies has now been upgraded, which was a great response.”

Inaugural Alcoholics Anonymous meeting commemorated Devonport is famous for many things, but one lesser-known fact is that it was where New Zealand’s first Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meeting was held.

Seventy years ago, in June 1948, the first group meeting was held in the Victoria Rd surgery of Devonport dentist Alf Joughin.

According to AA, Joughin is remembered as a “real gentleman”, always smartly dressed with a colourful bow tie, and was passionate about helping others recover from alcoholism.

These days, 464 weekly meetings of AA groups take place around New Zealand, with more than a quarter of them (139) held in Auckland. There are an estimated 4000 successfully recovering AA members. nationwide.

Twenty years ago: a selection from the Flagstaff files • An expert giving evidence to a hearing into telephone company Bell South’s plans to establish a cell tower on a site near Devonport Primary says several dozen studies showed an increase in the incidence of cancer in populations exposed to radiofrequency transmissions. Dr Neil Cherry, who was appearing for the school at the hearing, said leukaemia and brain tumours in particular tended to increase.

• Around 25 descendants of early Devonport settlers the Rusts attend a ceremony and witness the unveiling of a plaque in their honour at the cemetery on Mt Victoria.

• Developer Xeno Captain, who bought ‘Old Joe’s house’ in Church St, leaves its roof open and says he is happy it can rot away. North Shore City Council says it has no power to force Captain to enclose the building.

• The population of Devonport increased from 16,411 in 1991 to 17,507 in 1996, according to census figures. Devonport residents are predominately of European descent (82.33%) but 9.01% of its population is Maori. It has the lowest number of Asian residents on the North Shore (2.67%). Younger families are moving into the area with 21% of the population aged under 15. Saddlebacks for Shakespear One of New Zealand’s rarest birds, the Saddleback (or Tieke), was reintroduced to its ideal habitat on land owned by the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) last month.

The Navy-stewarded land on the tip of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula is home to the Tamaki Leadership Centre and includes a large area of coastal native bush with areas of mature manuka and karamu.

In a partnership between the Auckland Council’s Shakespear Open Sanctuary Society Incorporated (SOSSI), the Department of Conservation and the NZDF, 40 Saddleback were released at a site within the military land and quickly dispersed into the surrounding bush.

This land is protected by a predator-proof fence that extends across the peninsula from Shakespear Regional Park and includes the Defence Force land.

More than 100 people were invited to the release, including local kaumatua, volunteers from SOSSI, RNZ Navy representatives and Auckland councillors.

First to release five Saddlebacks from their

box were RNZN Commander Emma Grant and 10-year-old Chloe Oliver.

Chloe’s father RNZN Commander Tim Oliver also helped carry the boxes to the release site.

The translocation team caught the 40 Saddleback on Tiritiri Matangi Island the previous day and held them in aviaries there overnight, before the transfer to the mainland.

Rough weather and seas meant the planned ferry crossing could not go ahead, so the Council arranged for the Saddleback to be flown across from Tiritiri by private helicopter.

Northern Regional Parks Senior Ranger Open Sanctuaries, Matt Mailtland, says the Saddleback appear to be doing well and are now regularly heard calling in the area by volunteers and park staff.

“One bird has been observed in an adjacent bush area still on NZ Defence land. This pattern of dispersal is what was hoped for and similar to other translocations,” he says.

Devonport Flagstaff notches up 25 years of publication in 2018 The Devonport Flagstaff will celebrate 25 years of continuous publication this October.

In the fast-changing world of newspapers, publishing and the internet, two-and-a-half decades putting out a fortnightly paper is no mean feat.

That’s around 600 papers, 25,000 pages, millions of words and numerous pictures – all about Devonport.

The Flagstaff interview started in 1997, when Rob Drent took over editorship. Since then, more than 500 local people have been profiled.

We are unashamedly parochial – we only write about the Devonport peninsula. We were hyper-local years before the term was first coined, and have kept to our knitting – local stories about local people and local issues.

But while we have celebrated the achievements of our community, the Flagstaff has been no shrinking violet either – we’ve covered controversial subjects like drugs, suicide and teen crime.

We’ve always been keen to take local authorities to task on their decision-making and how ratepayers’ money is spent. And we’ve been part of campaigns to save the Narrow Neck headland from development, retain the Victoria Theatre and get rid of legal recreational drug Kronic from our town.

We are committed to print, but we are online as well and have just relaunched our website.

Our online edition has around 3000 hits per issue – from within Devonport, across New Zealand and around the world. Devonport news being read by friends, family, former residents and visitors.

Renovating or building?

SO Renovate makes it SO easy.

SO Renovate is a design-and-build company providing an end-to-end process for homeowners looking to undertake a renovation or new build.

SO is a one-stop shop for people who are not sure where to start their renovation or new build, or would like a company who can take them through the process from start to finish.

SO’s renovation process includes the initial design concept through to final design, quantitysurvey pricing of the final design, obtaining council building and resource consent and then project-managing the build using one of SO’s building teams.

For Devonport homeowners, the process would start with an initial consultation on-site with Tysen Kay, one of SO’s consultants. Tysen has been with SO for over seven years, having started with the company as an LBP builder and part of the building team. Through his experience, Tysen is able to provide ideas and input to assist homeowners to maximise the benefits of their project. He prides himself on being able to give an initial ballpark-price estimate based on the proposed project scope.

The total cost of the SO design and pricing process ranges from between $4000 and $7000 (depending on the project size and scope). SO offers this FREE, on the proviso clients proceed to use SO to project-manage, and undertake the actual renovation build.

If, after the initial consultation, a homeowner wishes to proceed with SO through the design and pricing process, they would confirm this by signing a concept proposal agreement. SO then engages one of a number of designers it works with to meet the customer on-site and then produce a draft design concept.

Typically, up to two design amendments are sufficient before the final concept plan is completed to the customer’s satisfaction.

SO then arranges a scoping meeting with the

customer on-site with one of SO’s quantity surveyors, to discuss in detail all aspects of the proposed scope. Based on this information and the concept plan, the SO QS team puts together a detailed price estimate along with an action plan, setting out the details of the proposed project.

For larger renovations, SO recommends customers engage the designer (at the customer’s cost) to provide developed design drawings, which provide far more detail and allow the SO QS team to obtain quotes from suppliers and subcontractors leading to more accurate pricing.

If the project price is within the customer’s budget expectations, and they are happy to proceed, they sign a cost-and-margin contract with SO. At the customer’s cost, the designer will prepare full working drawings for submission to council to obtain the required building and resource consent. Once the consents have been

obtained, SO will undertake the build process, which will be overseen by one of SO’s project managers.

SO also works with customers who have engaged an architect, and is happy to quote for renovations or new builds using developed design, full working drawings or consented full working drawings.

Over the last 10 years, SO has built a strong reputation for high-quality work, with the aim of ensuring every project is delivered on time and on budget.

SO is currently working with a number of Devonport homeowners who are at various stages of the SO process.

Articulate and passionate Fascinating topics, ranging from politics to our attitudes towards strangers, were explored in the finals of the 2018 Senior Speech Competition.

The six finalists from Years 12 and 13 were Esther Howie, Giorgia Doughty, Carina Oliver, Claudia Toxopeus, Kate Lee and Nadia Veljanovska.

All of the speeches had thoughtprovoking messages for teenagers and were of excellent quality, ensuring that it was no easy job for the judges, Mrs Mary Nixon, Principal, and Mr Dan Eichblatt, Year 13 Dean and English teacher, to pick a winner. After much

deliberation, first place was awarded to Giorgia Doughty for her satirical speech about politics; in particular the ability of women to lead. Kate Lee placed second for her speech on why Kanye West is the 21st century Friedrich Nietzsche. Third place was awarded to Nadia Veljanovska for her speech on the impact of kindness on other people’s lives.

Winner Giorgia Doughty said that “it was an amazing experience to be able to compete alongside such talented women.”

MUNA MUNA — two days of political debates, discussions and a lot of fun. This year we sent three teams, representing Peru, Morocco and Georgia.

Year 12 student, Libby Lord, who was representing Morocco said: “It was such great fun meeting new people and sharing our views on very large and current world issues. I also enjoyed the research element involved, and how we had to really play the role of our nation.”

Once seated in their ‘blocs’ in the auditorium, each bloc chose a leader nation, based on their leadership qualities and public-speaking skills.

Team Georgia, represented by two Year 13 Takapuna students, Michael Shaimerden and Pascal Murabula, as well as Year 11 student Will Dalzell, were selected as the bloc leaders for Eastern Europe, beating out much more powerful nations such as Russia and Poland.

The first topic was the UN’s involvement in the elections of member nations, where Morocco, represented

by Year 12 students Libby Lord and Zoe Martin, presented their point of view in a well thought-out speech. The second issue was reducing nuclear weapon stockpiles, when both Peru and Georgia spoke. The last debate of the day was

regarding the enforcement of women’s rights in member nations.

All three topics sparked fierce discussion and debate between nations, with a rivalry forming between China and the US. Peru, represented

by Year 13 students Chloe Kim, Olga Chrzanowska, Kate Lee and Domenic Johnson, were successful in passing an amendment, adding to the proposal to reduce nuclear weapon stockpiles in member nations.

Returning participant Olga Chrzanowska said: “Overall, I would say that this experience, like last year, allowed me to practise public speaking in front of a wide audience. It also helped me to really understand global issues on a much bigger scale and how difficult it is to satisfy everyone’s needs.

It really opened my eyes to the state that the world is in.”

Fellow Peru teammate, Kate Lee, also said: ”I had an incredible experience at MUNA. It was my second time attending the event and it always provides us with the opportunity to extend our public speaking and communication skills. I also love how we get to meet new people across numerous schools. I really enjoyed myself.”

Raising global awareness Takapuna Grammar School and Carmel College collaborated to run the annual Model United Nations Classroom here at the school.

This is a formal, yet relaxed, event organised

by Auckland Model UN (AMUN) High School Ambassadors to raise awareness of global issues and help students understand the processes of a Model UN Conference.

It is a great opportunity for students, as delegates of their chosen UN countries, to gain confidence when speaking in front of their peers.

Additionally, they also learn the type of diction and phrases that are predominantly used in a Model UN conference such as the Auckland/New Zealand Model UN conference.

“The turnout from Carmel and TGS was brilliant, and throughout the committee and

plenary sessions everyone was engaged in the topics that were being discussed,” said organiser Kate Lee. Although there were many students who said that this was their first Model UN event, everyone was given the chance to speak and be involved in all the discussions and debates.

“Despite this event being my second Model UN conference, I can confidently say that I continue to learn and enhance my understanding on global issues,” said Claire Choi.

All the student delegates ended the conference with expanded knowledge and curiosity, understanding how a United Nations Conference is conducted, and most importantly, they met new people who share similar interests.

Depot’s photography exhibitions draw a crowd

The walls of The Depot came alive with two photography exhibitions that opened on 1 June.

Linda Jarrett’s Walk: An Antithesis to the Decisive Moment, a series of abstract photographs taken around Devonport, filled one half of the gallery. The remainder was

occupied by The Depot’s participatory exhibition Out of Control. This selection of photographs includes everything from portraits to pets and landscapes.

The opening event attracted a crowd who had come from near and far to support Devonport’s talented photographers.

Plenty of interests to fill dentist’s retirement Retiring Devonport dentist John Kelly has no hesitation naming the most exciting day in his surgery.

It was when an Oscar-winning actor walked in for treatment.

“The actor was staying in Devonport,” says the softly spoken Kelly (67), who quickly adds that patient confidentiality prevents him from saying more.

Kelly retired on 1 June, after almost 28 years as a dentist in Devonport.

In 1990, he set up a surgery above Clarry’s, alongside what was then Devonport Gym. After 20 years, he moved to his current location in Fleet St. He’s treated hundreds of Devonport patients over the years – at a rate of around 2500 consultations a year, that’s a lot of teeth under the bridge.

In his last week at work, Kelly saw eight members of one family, spanning three generations.

“People tend to stay in Devonport,” he says.

Among his patients Kelly was known for his calm and gentle manner, which put nervous clients at ease. It was something he worked on over the years – particularly the giving of injections “in the least painful way”.

People would probably be surprised to know that giving an injection slowly is less painful than a quick jab, he says.

In his time as a dentist, one of the key developments was the change from amalgam to white fillings, alongside improvements in tooth health.

In his early days, dentures were common in elderly patients, whereas now they are virtually unseen.

“The health of people’s teeth has definitely improved over the years,” he says. And so have the treatment options.

“There’s an emphasis on keeping people’s teeth, rather than extraction, maintaining things through root canal treatments to keep things there.”

Kelly lives in Herne Bay and will miss the ferry trip over to work and interaction with Devonport businesses and locals alike.

In his retirement, Kelly hopes to spend more time kayaking, tramping, fishing and travelling.

His first trip is to Sri Lanka for a holiday in August.

His practice has been taken over by Madison Chang and Clarence Tam.

North Shore beats Waiheke to stay in promotion hunt North Shore United posted a spirited 2-0 home win against Waiheke United last Saturday to keep its promotion hopes alive.

Going into the match, Shore was fifth-placed in the NRFL division one and Waiheke United second. But the win puts Waiheke and North Shore equal third, with Waiheke ahead on goal difference.

In an even match, the teams were locked 0-0, until Sam St de Croix scored in the 76th minute and then Harry Lissington put the result beyond doubt with a 90th minute strike.

Shore plays top-of-table Melville this week away, as the 22-match season moves into the final stretch. Shore manager Bill Lissington said it would be a tough game for the young team, but they were not without hope. Last year, Shore beat Melville 1-0 at home and then was 2-0 down with 10 minutes to play but came back to draw 2-2.

This weekend, and the following, will to some degree define Shore’s season. On June 23, it will play Mt Albert Ponsonby at Allen Hill Stadium in the third round of the Chatham Cup (2pm kickoff).

Lissington said the club hoped the TGS 1st XI would play King’s College in a curtainraiser at 11.15 am.
