Home burns – fire engine 100m away out of action

A fire engine was out of action with a collapsed battery as a Devonport home was going up in flames just 100 metres away.

Fire engulfed a flat at Ariho Terrace across the road from Devonport Fire Station just before 7 pm on Saturday.

McCartney equals NZ record before World Champs

TGS student and pole-vaulter Eliza McCartney equalled the New Zealand record clearing 4:40 metres at a meet in Vancouver, winning gold less than two weeks before the World Junior Champs in Oregon, USA. Going into the world champs, McCartney (17) was ranked third on the World U20 list.

McCartney’s jump at the Harry Jerome International on July 11 was 30 cm higher than the vault that placed her fourth at the 2013 world

champs in Donetsk, Ukraine.

McCartney left Devonport earlier this month after a bout of glandular fever that prevented her from reaching the 4:30 metre qualification height for the Youth Olympics in Glasgow. Her goal for the trip was to reach this height, which she has now exceeded by 10 cm.

McCartney will be competing in Eugene, Oregon on July 22 to qualify for the finals to be held on July 24.

Ireland’s creative juices fuelled by hungry birds

Banging out the poems…Kevin Ireland with fellow Devonport writer Shonagh Koea and his granddaughter Phoebe-Ann Ireland Family, friends and other writers flocked to the launch of Kevin Ireland’s latest poetry collection, Feeding the Birds, and celebrated with the prolific bard a day before his 81st birthday.

Among them were Ireland’s two sons Bill and Sam and granddaughter Phoebe-Ann Ireland.

Many of the around 100 people at the Depot for the launch last Thursday were writers themselves, including locals Te Awhina Arahanga,

Geoff Chapple, Bill Cooke, Shonagh Koea, Graeme Lay, Sue Orr and some from further afield, including Peter Bland, Bernard Brown, Riemke Ensing, CK Stead and Denys Trussel.

A mere year after launching his previous book, Ireland’s publisher Roger Steele said his author was “banging out the poems.” During Steele’s introduction, Ireland stole off towards the loo with the words, “I’ve got to write my speech.”

Ireland talked about the emerging theme of his new book. He confessed he started feeding birds while spending time in Alexandra, trying to make amends for brutally killing a chook as a youngster.

From Devonport to Glasgow – where it all began

Champions from an early age… Jacko Gill and Brooke Cull featured in the same Flagstaff issue in November 2006, winning the 100 metres at Belmont Intermediate School champs Brooke Cull and Jacko Gill have been sports champions since primary school days.

Cull started out as national aerobics champ when she was 11, the same year Gill smashed the shot put record for his age division at age 10. Eight years later, both are competing at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Cull (20), a student at the University of Otago, is part of the first women’s 400m relay team to qualify for the games since 2006. She is currently ranked second in New ‘ Zealand, with a personal-best time of 53.8 seconds. The relay team is ranked 7th in the Commonwealth.

Gill (19) is competing in the shot put. In June, he threw a personal best of 20.78 metres, winning the Oceania Area Championship title in Rarotonga. His Commonwealth ranking is 4th.

Gill and Cull have held the attention of the Flagstaff since 2005. During an Athletics Day at Belmont Intermediate School in 2006, both made it on to the same page. Cull was in Year 8, Gill a year behind. Both won the 100-metre running races and the high jump.

Cull also won the 200m race. Gill won shot put as well as discus, where Cull came third.

The pair both attended Devonport Primary School and Belmont Intermediate. They were part of the Elite Sports Institute at Takapuna Grammar School and belonged to Takapuna Athletics Club.

Jacko Gill will be competing in Glasgow on July 27 and 28. Brooke Cull’s team is running on August 1 and 2.

Tucker said once volunteers arrived at the station it took around 90 seconds to ascertain that the fire truck was not operational and a call for back-up was made.

The trucks were checked as part of a regular maintenance programme. But when batteries reach the end of their natural life they can collapse without warning, Tucker said.

The first appliances at the fire were one from Takapuna and two from Birkenhead. By this time the volunteers had raced across the road with hoses and had got water to the fire from a standpipe at the end of Ariho Terrace.

It was “speculation” over how much time had been lost due to the fire truck being out of operation, Tucker said.

But by the time the fire service was notified of the fire, believed to have been caused by a faulty light switch in the garage, it was “well involved, and it was always going to be a significant loss,” he said.

It was “Murphy’s Law” and “bad luck to say the least” that both Devonport fire trucks were unable to attend the fire.

“It is not very often the second fire truck is the first fire truck to an incident…it has happened only a handful of times in the last eight years,” Tucker said.

The most important lesson from the fire was the need for working fire alarms. The flat in Ariho Terrace should have had alarms on both storeys, Tucker said.

The resident of the flat did not want to speak to the Flagstaff about the incident. But on Sunday the extent of the damage was revealed

– virtually all the contents of the flat were either charred or smoke-damaged. Tucker said he understood the tenant was insured.

The flat is one of four in a block at 7 Ariho Terrace. The other flats were virtually unscathed as concrete block firewalls between them prevented the blaze from spreading sideways.

The face of the Devonport Community Garden sees fruit-laden mandarin, grapefruit, lime and other citrus trees around many Devonport gardens and worries their crops will go to waste. She wants to turn them into marmalade instead.

This winter has been amazing season for citrus, Smith says.

“These little trees put so much effort into growing the fruit while nothing much else is going on in our gardens. It would be a shame not to use them and turn them into

something yummy we can enjoy for months to come,” she says.

Smith will be holding Marmalade Madness sessions at the garden on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons from 2 – 4 pm.

People can participate in any way they want: drop off their garden citrus fruit, empty jars and bags or sugar, or stay and join in the fun on-site.

Anzac sisters are keeping it real

The first-ever play to be held at the Navy Musuem tells the stories of women at Gallipoli.

Sister Anzac: The Angels of Mercy at Anzac Cove – a new play by Geoff Allen is based on two real-life sisters and nurses, Hilda and Camilla Steele. They were two of 14 New Zealand nurses travelling to Gallipoli in 1915 on the New Zealand hospital ship SS Maheno and supported the Kiwi soldiers fighting there.

To research the play, Allen interviewed Hilda’s granddaughter Barbara Gallagher. “She told me Camilla became a nurse after God spoke to her on a Taranaki beach. Today Camilla is buried in Bayswater. I have gone looking for her grave but haven’t found it yet,”Allen says.

Devonport’s Torpedo Bay Navy Museum was keen to host the play, where a myriad of Navy artefacts will surround the set. Navy musuem spokesperson Ann Martin-Stacy said: “For us this will be part of our World War I commemoration, and the ship connection is there as well of course.”

Devonport actress Gina Timberlake plays the part of Hilda, and Timberlake has undergone her own training so she can do Hilda justice on stage. “Our cast went to visit the Navy hospital and even the frigate Te Hana while it was docked. The staff talked us through some real life scenarios that happen during battles, which was very helpful,” she says.

“Camilla also liked to read tea leaves so I have been practisng that as well,” she says.

Officers Mess now open for Thursday night dining.

Opened as a wedding and functions venue last November after a massive refurbishment, Thursdays @ the Officers Mess build on the Officers Mess’ popular Sunday brunches.

The Thursday dinner includes bread for the table and choice of two entrees, two mains and two desserts – all prepared by award-winning chef and owner Jeremy Schmid.

The menu will change every week and will be posted on the Officers Mess Facebook page.

Schmid describes the food as bistro-style and the aim was for the table to share platters.

“Every Sunday we have had people come up to us and ask when we would be open for dinner, so we decided on a Thursday evening as Fridays and Saturdays would not be able to be regular due to weddings and functions.”

Schmid said the beauty of a simple menu was its freshness, which was not possible “with 50 things on the menu.”

Previous occupiers the Navy did not need a resource consent so Schmid was essentially submitting a consent for a new building.

The result was a renovation of close to $1 million, which included new kitchens, bathrooms, rewiring, re-plumbing, a massive deck and a complete internal redecoration.

“People seem to be stoked with what has happened – the building was falling apart from not being used.”

The brunches, which started in February, have been a huge sucess. The Officers Mess generally seats around 80 people and the tables are turned over once or twice. A big favourite is one of Schmid’s specialities: Smoked fish cakes, poached eggs and pea shoots with hollandaise sauce.

Schmid has been a chef for 25 years and has worked at top restaurants in Switzerland, London and Auckland, including Gault’s on Quay, Euro, Red and Orbit (Sky City). For five years he ran his own restaurant – Two Fifteen Bistro – which he sold to devote all his energy to the Officers Mess full time.

But he has continued running Paleta, a gourmet ice-block company he co-founded in 2012 and he is still writing cook books.

His first, Bangers to Bacon, placed third in Paris for the international Gourmand Food Cookbook awards in the single subject section, while his second Smoked is due out on August 1.

Schmid recently won the Big Pork Breakfast competition at the Fine Food Show, working with a butcher to prepare bacon in one and a half hours for three judges and 17 customers.

Schmid brings all this experience to the Officers Mess. “When there is food being prepared for customers I am there,” he says.

The venue side of the Officers Mess is building steadily with 35 weddings and numerous functions booked over the next few months.

With its coastal location and wide views to the sea and Rangitoto, the venue was like Waiheke – except it can be reached by car without having to go on a ferry.

“I’m really pleased with the overall result and people enjoy coming here,” Schmid said.

Harry, prince of junior cycling, crowned six times Cyclist Harry Waine won five individual gold medals and was part of the winning junior boys time trial team at this year’s North Island Secondary School Cycling Championships.

A junior member of the Takapuna Grammar School (TGS) cycling team, he collected more than half of the school’s medal tally at the event held in Cambridge from July 5 -7.

Waine won the junior boys road race, the junior boys criterium and three junior track races. He was part of the junior team time trial team that also included Oscar Elworthy, Jacob Kench and Adam McPheat.

Elworthy also won silver in the junior boys road race. Elli Cowan won silver in the senior girls criterium and Harry Elworthy silver in the senior boys criterium.

TGS cycling president Callum McNair is stoked.

“Harry Waine stepped out of the shadow of his peers and stamped his mark on the event, winning gold in each of the six events he competed in,” he says.

“We came fourth four times as well. In our junior ranks almost without exception every cyclist who competed exceeded their own personal expectations. And imagine the results if our seniors hadn’t gone to the school ball held on Saturday night,” McNair says.

Ngati Whatua the developer should have same restrictions as everybody else Devonport Heritage anticipated Ngati Whatua’s plans for development of the Devonport land acquired under their commercial Treaty settlement.

Devonport Heritage has submitted as an objector against Ngati Whatua’s plans for five-storey developments and its proposal to wave heritage rules in its precincts. At this point the debate will take place at the Unitary Plan hearings that have still to be scheduled.

Devonport Heritage is asking that the Vauxhall Road-Fort Takapuna Reserve area be included as a special character area and be protected by the same guidelines for residential zoning that apply to all Devonport’s residents. The Unitary Plan did not identify the historic and social importance of the Fort Takapuna-Vauxhall Road area and this has left the site vulnerable to lax and inappropriate development for a site that is historically significant. The historic importance of the 3.2 hectares rests with its connections to coastal fortifications for

both Tangata Whenua and the New Zealand Navy. This coastal site was the place of departure for the Maori Battalion and Pacific soldiers, and it’s where the WW1 Tainui resistors to conscription were held. This area is a culturally, spiritually and historically significant place for many New Zealanders.

Devonport Heritage has asked many authorities to take responsibility and complete an archaeological and historic conservation plan, but most have not accepted their accountability. Maybe the Unitary Plan Commissioners might respond as it is within their mandate to identify, retain and manage the values of this special character area.

Like all other submitters to the Unitary Plan from the Devonport-Belmont area, Devonport Heritage has asked that the other precincts owned by Ngati Whatua in Marsden Street, Plymouth Crescent, Hillary Crescent and Wakakura Crescent, have the same planning regulations that apply to all residents apply equally to all developers.

Callous thieves took jacket and keys, left baby and car To an opportunistic ratbag: while in Belmont Pharmacy on the weekend (of July 5th), filing my six-month-old daughter’s prescription, some opportunistic ratbag decided to pinch my jacket and my keys from my double buggy. We had spent the night before at Shore Care with a baby that had a virus and a 40-degree temperature.

Unsafe work practices need attention I was shocked to see two workers on the interior of Devonport wharf banging up plywood and making what looked like concrete shutters using Paslode nail guns and hammers had no hearing protection on whatsoever.

Keep left and behave on Lake Road As usual the Flagstaff gives a great platform for local debate with a smattering of overkill usually from the venting of frustration.

Cycling advocate Chris Werry made good obversations on Lake Road cycle lanes although the badly behaved are the ones who make a mockery of these dedicated lanes.

A previous correspondent openly admitted to stopping ever so briefly in the lanes and was shocked by a mouthful from a cyclist who then had to avoid her.

Motor scooters often abuse their road rights by passing traffic on the inside using the cycle lanes.

The parallel parking on Memorial Drive is downright dangerous when motorists refuse

to keep in their marked lanes.

What makes this particular length of Lake Road a stupidity is the lack of a footpath on the eastern side where the street lighting is.

Go figure.

Where there is 2 metres of footpath width possible why can’t pedestrians and slow cyclists exist?

The first rule of the road code is keep left and if everybody did just that we wouldn’t be blogging these valuable Flagstaff pages and more could be revealed about the issues that really are important to residents of this beautiful part of the world.

Keep left and behave.

New Narrow Neck fence waste of ratepayers’ money A new fence is being constructed at Narrow Neck Beach. That’s probably a good idea as the old one was becoming dilapidated, but what function is the stretch of new fence between the café and the southern end supposed to serve?

The existing fence on the outside of the footpath discourages pedestrians from walking out on to the roadway, but the new fence is being built on the inside of the footpath isolating the narrow strip of grass beside the yacht club fence and performing no practical purpose.

If it is merely to create a sense of uniform appearance along the length of the beach, it is a shameful waste of ratepayers’ money.

Do our elected representatives ever study the plans before they are signed off?

Are these the same people who allowed the destruction of well-established pohutukawa trees near Devonport Wharf in an attempt to “improve” the appearance of the area? I don’t recall being advised at any stage that the trees were to be victims.

School cyclists courteous, drivers the real footpath danger I am responding to Karen Jones’ letter regarding schoolchildren cycling on the footpaths For the last 25 years I have regularly run in the morning through Narrow Neck. The school children riding on the footpaths do so because they feel safe. In general they are courteous, cycle round you if needed, and I have never had a reason to feel in any danger from these cyclists.

The danger comes from people reversing out of driveways whom cannot see the footpath until most of the car is across it.

They only look in the direction of the traffic they are pulling into and very rarely look to see if the footpath is clear. That I do not wear headphones whilst running has saved me from having a car collide with me on many occasions.

Walkers have voiced to me that they encounter the same problem.

School children should be encouraged to cycle to school; that they are on the footpath is a small price to pay for their safety.

David Downs wired for humour and innovation

Master of reinvention… David Downs

David Downs has just finished a book on New Zealand inventions that changed the world. No 8 Re-Wired will be published in September. Downs also has a history of reinventing himself. He has been a professional comedian and an IT specialist; he is currently general manager at New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and a trustee at the Victoria Theatre. Downs spoke to Maire Vieth.

No 8 Re-Wired is the fourth book by David Downs and his friend since university days, Jon Bridges.

Since Downs and Bridges wrote No 8 Wire, their first book on Kiwi inventions, the list of inventions they have researched has grown from 60 to 202. “A lot of new and exciting inventions been made since but we also had missed some older ones then,” says Downs. For example, instant coffee was invented by a man from Invercargill in 1890 and a Wellington entomologist proposed the idea of modern Daylight Savings Time five years later.

Downs applauds Kiwi ingenuity but how it manifests itself has changed.

“Many of our historical inventions come from a farming or frontier mentality. They celebrate the isolated genius bloke in the shed making do with what he’s got. He is a long way from help and figures things out on his own,” he says.

But the world has changed and our historical model can become dangerous if we stick to it.

“Nowadays you have to work with others, learn from others and form clusters. We are heavily connected and information is no longer a thing that belongs to you but belongs to everyone.

“The bloke in the shed is not the way of the future. We need to learn to work with others and to ask for help,” he says.

Embracing failure is part of it, Downs says.

He and Bridges have a failed invention to their names. The ‘Bath-B-Smaller’ is a blow-up device to reduce water usage when bathing a baby.

It was patented in 1998. “We completely stole

the idea from my wife and made absolutely no money out of. We basically did it to follow in the path of an inventor, to see what it was like to invent and patent something,” Downs says.

“The new book has a whole chapter on failure.

You have to celebrate failure, build on it and learn from it, because it is an integral part of innovation,” he says.

Downs promises that the new book is funny.

It is, after all, written by two comedians. Bridges is the producer of TV show Seven Days and humour has been a way of life for Downs, sometimes unintentionally, ever since he was young. The son of recent Irish immigrants, he and his siblings were raised as Irish children in Wanganui. “We had Irish accents, went to Catholic schools and on St Patrick’s Day were sent to school in green getup. The community newspaper came looking for us every year because we made a good photo,” he says. Being funny was also a way to fit in. “I was useless at sports and a bit brainy, nerdy, so I developed a thick skin and a sense of humour,” he says.

During secondary school, Downs got into theatre and radio. Wanganui, a town of 35,000, had four theatres then, he says. He and friends acted in small shows and later had their own local radio show. “We had the early Sunday morning slot and they let us do what we wanted. We probably only had about three listeners but it led to my enjoyment of public appearances,” he says.

At Palmerston North’s Massey University, Downs enrolled in Maths and Philosophy. “It was foolish. I soon discovered that they were boring and joined the university’s student and

July 25 2014 arts association and did lots of acting and that sort of thing,” he says.

“I met Jon during our first capping revue, a kind of variety show they put on at universities at the end of the year and that was super popular in the late 1980s,” says Downs. He and Bridges were instant collaborators, editing Massey’s student newspaper and, at 19, writing a book about flatting.

During their second year at university, they were headhunted for TV. Downs remembers: “I literally got a phone call out of the blue from a TV producer called Dave Gibson. He honestly said ‘I saw your show and I want you to work for me in television.’ I chucked university and moved to Wellington to be an actor.”

Comedy sketches were part of TV3’s early days on air and Downs and Bridges wrote much of it. Downs worked in TV for five years, writing sketch comedy, acting, editing scripts, then doing ads and voice-overs. He met future wife Katherine and they moved to Auckland in 1993.

In 1995, Downs and a handful of fellow comedians opened The Classic, Auckland’s first comedy club. “The original use of the Queen Street building was as a porn cinema. We scraped together just enough money from friends and family and negotiated with council to take over its lease,” he says.

“We were six comedians who knew nothing about business. I knew how to use Excel and had half a Math’s degree, so naturally I took over the business side of things. I still can’t believe our audacity, and that the club is still running today.

When it started was not a time when you could make a living in comedy,” Downs says.

It is why he returned to university, did papers in maths and computer science, and, with two partners, set up the IT company Eureka. “We basically helped big companies write software.

In the mid-1990s there wasn’t a lot of that around,” he says. Eureka was a success, and soon had clients such as Telecom, Fletcher Forests, Transpower.

“And I had an ulcer,” Downs says. In 1997, he sold up, left The Classic and he, Katherine and their first son Jack moved to Dublin. “I worked for an IT company there but we only stayed for a year because we hated the weather so much,” he says.

Still only in his late twenties, and with a second son on the way, Downs came back to New Zealand and started what he calls his “grown-up job” at Microsoft, managing a small team, rising up through the corporate ranks, promoted to senior management and receiving numerous company awards. “I ended up staying 12 years and Bill Gates gave me a watch,” he says.

In 2010, the Downs family, now with three boys in tow, opted for another adventure. “This one day, I had job offers for Microsoft in Dubai, Seattle and Singapore. The boys helped me decide. We opted for Singapore because it was only one flight away from home and not too hot,” Downs says.

He ended up working long hours and traveling frequently. “When Katherine called me one afternoon and asked if I could pick up milk on the way home, I told I her I could but that I was in Jakarta. We knew it was time to go back

Bridge the gaps: develop a proper cycleway If you want to remove the cycle lanes from Lake Road you must provide an alternative.

This would be more than just praising the merits of the new O’Neills Point walkway.

Bridging the gaps between the peninsulas from Devonport to Takapuna will deliver the true meaning of a cycleway; somewhere that the cyclist can feel safe away from busy traffic and offer a real alternative to reducing the car volume travelling up and down Lake Road.

The cycleway solution would utilise the Green route as a backbone but with significant modifications. Although this route is the

poor cousin to the direct route of Lake Road as it forces the cyclist on a number of accents and descents, it’s probably the best and most cost-effective route.

This is what would need to happen: 1) B ridge the gap from the corner of Ngataringa Park to the bottom of Wesley Street.

2) B ridge the gap from the bottom of Kawerau Ave (paper road) to Birkley Road end (another paper road).

3) D evelop a low cost boulevard to promote cycling and walking along Roberts and into Norwood Roads and have a cycle crossing,

4) Resurface the wooden bridge running from the creek at Northboro Road up to Francis Street as it is treacherous in wet conditions 5) Bridge the gap from bottom of Francis Street to the back side of the Harbourside Church and come out at the lights onto Esmonde Road.

If Auckland Transport or anyone else is serious about promoting cycling as a commuter alternative, they need to provide the proper infrastructure just like any road. If you can’t do that, please leave the cycle lanes alone.

At least they provide something for cyclists.

But I think the event could and should have had a lot more support, particularly from Devonport, just a ferry ride across. It may have even helped AT restore some of the face they have deservedly lost in our community over the past year or so. Can someone from AT then please explain to me why I found out about this event indirectly through Facebook and yet it wasn’t advertised locally at all? It would have been a convenient and interesting half-day out for many young Devonport families. Surely the families of Devonport are one of the closest and most obvious to try and attract or did AT try and get people to come into town in their cars from further flung

locations? AT had organised a double-decker bus ride as part of the event - well it’s not rocket science to suggest that it would have been just as easy to throw in a ferry ticket or incorporate the ferry into the event with kids’ entertainment or giveaways on board.

I also read in the Flagstaff about free ferry tickets being provided during the school holidays for kids travelling from Auckland to Devonport, but not the other way around. Is that how you “reward” the group of people that spends most with you? Wouldn’t it have been nice to have offered Devonport season ticket or pass holders a little something for the school holidays.

TGS brass band gives another polished performance

The Takapuna Grammar School (TGS) brass band took a bow to its audience and its band leader in a show just prior to the school holidays.

Ted Dawson, who has conducted the band for the last three years, says the standard of the band’s performance gets higher every year.

The evening started with renaissance music played by ten members of TGS Brass. TGS Strings, led by the school’s new deputy principal Louise Roe, performed four pieces, including themes from the movie Braveheart and the jazzy tune of Sweet Georgia Brown.

TGS Brass concluded the evening with Mussorgsky’s The Great Gate of Kiev.

Hardcastle builds new career on DPS success

Departing Devonport Primary… principal Shirley Hardcastle leaving after 12 years After receiving a glowing report card last year, Devonport Primary School principal Shirley Hardcastle decided it was time to head off to help other schools do the same.

Hardcastle has accepted a position as Senior Advisor at the Ministry of Education after running Devonport Primary for 12 years. She has spent more than a decade “building the school up,” she says. Last year, Devonport Primary received a glowing Education Review Office report, classifying it as a “school of excellence,” says Hardcastle. “It was a long overdue recognition of all the hard work everyone put in over the years,” she says, including the school’s new pool, classroom, library and art room.

“It also means that we are process and not personality focused, which makes me confident that I can pass on my baby and it will all go well,” Hardcastle says. Letting go hasn’t been easy, she admits. “In this job, there is always something new and exciting happening, new challenges and opportunities, and that can be quite addictive,” she says.

At first Hardcastle was conflicted about taking another career step forward. “I am not 21 anymore and was actually having thoughts about retiring, but then this opportunity came up and I decided to have a change and try and be useful instead. I am just no good at doing nothing,” she says.

Hardcastle says she has seen many changes in the teaching profession over the years. “When I started out as a young teacher in Tauranga, the only time I could get to talk to a parent about their child was in the pub on Friday nights. And

I was underage at the time,” she says.

“Today’s parents are very involved, which is wonderful, challenging at times, but good challenging,” she says.

A long-term Birkenhead resident, Hardcastle will be working for the Ministry from Auckland initially, but is not opposed to move closer to Wellington.

“Who knows what will happen? I am openminded and excited,” Hardcastle says. Her last day at Devonport Primary will be August 8.

Printmaker who has stamped her mark on art

Exhibiting at 83… Joan Stevens Taylor Devonport printmaker Joan Stevens Taylor is featured in a retrospective exhibition at the Flagstaff Gallery.

At 83, Taylor is perhaps best known for her prints, many of which feature her Devonport neighbourhood. But she is as accomplished and just as much admired for her paintings in both watercolour and oil as well as her pastel works.

The daughter of a former Devonport Mayor, Fred Stevens, Taylor was born and educated in Devonport.

Takapuna Grammar, she studied fine arts at Elam in the early 1950s.

Teacher training followed and she taught in secondary schools until 1976, when she realised her dream of becoming a full-time printmaker.

With the opening of the Mairangi Arts Centre in 1991, Taylor was asked to run a printmaking class, which she did up until four years ago.

Under her tutelage, the Mairangi Printmakers became a thriving group providing a springboard for several members who

went on to become professional printmakers themselves.

Retired gunners celebrate 80 years

Army history marked …(above) and (below) Tony McLeod (left) and Alan Taylor outside the old Masonic Hall on Victoria Rd New Zealand’s Royal Artillery Association began 80 years ago in Devonport and a group of current members marked the anniversary with a group photo shoot. Locals Tony McLeod and Alan Taylor were among the 26 members in attendance.

The association’s first meeting was held on July 10, 1934 in the old Masonic Hall at 145 Victoria Rd. It now has about 650 members spread throughout the country, including veterans from all the global conflicts as well as the serving soldiers of 16 Field Regt based in Linton Military Camp.

Major Alan Taylor is a Korean War veteran and has lived in Devonport much of his life.

“Whenever I lived in Auckland, I lived in Devonport. From 1927 until 1932, from 1942 until 1956, and from 1981 until today,” he says.

Lieutenant Colonel McLeod worked in the New Zealand Army for 25 years and has served on UN peacekeeping missions. He is the association’s current president. “It was formed to help support former World War One soldiers during the Depression. And it was formed here because Devonport had a large artillery presence then because of its two coastal defences, Fort Takapuna and North Head,” he says.

McLeod was born in Devonport and is about to move back. “When I recently drove past the old Masonic Hall, I thought it would be worthwhile celebrating our anniversary in some way, as it has never been done before.

A photo and morning tea at the RSA hall both seemed appropriate,” he says.

Artist looking forward to whale of a time down Mexico way

Arriba!… Cinzah Merkens in his Devonport studio before setting off on a trip of a lifetime to Mexico Swimming with whale sharks and giant manta rays might not be to everyone’s taste, but for Cinzah Merkens, it’s a dream come true.

The former Takapuna Grammar student is one of 13 artists from around the world who have been invited to take part in the latest Sea Walls - Murals for Oceans expedition to Mexico.

The groundbreaking street art project was created by conservation group Pangeaseed to raise awareness of environmental issues

faced by the world’s oceans.

Merkens (28) has been involved with the organisation for the past four years, supplying it with free artwork to publicise its cause.

He was amazed and delighted when he he was asked to take part in the latest Sea Walls project and has been busy fundraising to facilitate the trip.

“It’s an honour to be asked and I will be working alongside a fine selection of epic artists,” he said.

The mission of the expedition is to offer the artists the opportunity to swim with and study the endangered whale shark and oceanic manta rays.

Inspired by their interactions with these majestic giants in the wild, the artists will create a series of large-scale public murals on the island of Isla Mujeres to help educate and raise greatly needed awareness within the local and tourist communities of the plight of these animals and the oceans.

“The sharks are huge, whale size as their name suggests, but fortunately live off a diet of krill so I should be safe,” said Merkens.

Waiting for him at home in Devonport is partner Ash Scott and their two children, Kelly, three, and seven-month-old Rita.

“I’m going to miss my family a lot but it’s an experience I couldn’t miss,” he said.

“I was brought up in the Cook Islands and Devonport so the ocean has always been a huge part of my life. Anything I can do to help conserve and protect what lives in it, is something I passionately support.”

Merkens works as an illustrator and artist from his shared studio space, The Yard, in Wynyard Street.

The lead role of Natasha, in Company Theatre’s production of Roger Hall’s comedy A Shortcut to Happiness, will be played by Irishwoman Wendy Dynan-Gleeson.

Dynan-Gleeson was born and bred in Ireland and grew up in a theatrical family who owned a performing arts school. Theatre has always been a huge part of her life and she completed a BA in Drama and Psychology at the University of Glamorgan, South Wales, followed by a postgraduate year at The Drama Studio, London where she was in the top 5% at graduation.

Dynan-Gleeson performed a variety of roles in Ireland and Britain, including Shakespeare’s Oberon and Lady MacBeth. Other memorable roles were Chrissy in Dancing at Lughnasa by Brian Friel, Frieda in Ourselves Alone by Anne Devlin, Mary in New Morning by Declan Hughes and Marie in The Nutcracker and The Mouse King adapted by Jane Buckler.

Dynan-Gleeson says coming to New Zealand has been an incredible experience and she feels fortunate to have been involved with a number of Theatre in Education shows in Auckland. “Life here in New Zealand has been amazing and made very easy by such a welcoming nation.”

After having two Kiwi children, DynanGleeson decided it was time to get back on stage and came across the auditions on Company Theatre’s website.

John Choi, a star perfomer with the Devonport Chamber Orchestra, is set to play with them again this year.

On September 1, 2013 Choi performed Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with the Devonport Chamber Orchestra (DCO) in front of a capacity audience in Harmony Hall.

It was an extraordinary occasion in which both the audience and orchestra were profoundly moved by Choi’s playing.

In a letter to the Devonport Flagstaff, one resident wrote: “John played so exquisitely, he brought tears to the eyes and was given a standing ovation at the finish, which he richly deserved”. Another audience member left a phone message following the concert, saying: “this was so gorgeous I nearly fainted … the most beautiful musical experience of my life.”

The orchestra is therefore delighted that Choi has agreed to perform another violin concerto with us on Sunday, July 27. This time it will be the lovely Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E Minor. We are pleased that

Brecon Carter has agreed to conduct the concert, as he and Choi made such a superb team last year. Also on the programme will be Mendelssohn’s popular and evocative The Hebrides overture, also known as Fingal’s Cave.

Due to the popularity of Choi’s concert last year, we decided to move from Harmony Hall to Holy Trinity Church this year. The acoustics in Holy Trinity are superb and there will more room for the audience and orchestra.

Regular DCO concertgoers will know the “Choi” name well. David Choi has been a violin soloist on three occasions with the orchestra, the last being in March this year, and both he and older brother Luke (a cellist), will be playing in the orchestra again in this concert.

So come along and bring your friends to Holy Trinity on Sunday at 2pm for what is promising to be another wonderful musical experience.

the public contributes its design ideas for a new national flag by inviting them to partake in Flag It! If you’re in quick, The Depot has a number of free canvases (donated by the Canvas Company of Albany) available to artists on a first come – first served basis. The design can be any shape, and any medium, except paper, is acceptable. The flags should be ready to hang, either on the wall or from special flag poles that will be in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition.

Gallery manager Helen Winskill said the event was open to established artists or anyone who felt it was time to change the national flag.

“It’s an opportunity for someone to have their moment of fame or even be part of making history,” she said. “It’s not really a competition as such, but a call for ideas and a chance for someone to be the designer of New Zealand’s next flag.”

The Flag It! concept evolved from an earlier Depot exhibition, W’akaputanga, by the Hokianga Maori Artists’ group, which included the United Tribes flag.

“It sparked a lot of conversation and discussion around the flag debate among people from all walks of life,” said Winskill.

“It seems many people would like to have a flag that better reflects New Zealand’s

cultural identity as it is today and feel that the current flag is no longer representative of how the country is now,” said Winskill.

She said that a lack of an alternative flag was potentially why some people were reluctant to change it.

The Depot has drawn up a design brief for potential flag makers that offers guidance on what could be incorporated in the designs. Its recommendations include ensuring the flag is instantly recognisable as the New Zealand flag, that it references the past and the future and has a timeless aspect.

Entries have to be in by August 28 and will be exhibited at The Depot until September 19, the eve of the General Election.

There will be a People’s Choice award and selected works will be presented to the Government.

The Depot is expecting people to submit entries from Devonport, the wider Auckland community and even from other parts of the country.

Flag It! has the support of New Zealand artists including Dick and Otis Frizzell, and Michael Smythe, whose own versions of a new flag will feature in the exhibition.

Devonport under the weather again

Stormy weather hit Devonport for a second time this winter two weeks ago. Strong and predominantly easterly winds uprooted trees, caused ferry services to be cancelled and tore off roofing from the stands at Allen Hill Stadium. The wind also blew so much sand from Cheltenham and Narrow Neck Beaches onto neighbouring paths and streets that it had to be moved back with the help of diggers.

Peninsula shines in Travelwise awards Eight local schools received awards for their growing commitment to encourage their students to get to schools more sustainably and reduce car trips.

Auckland Transport’s (AT) Travelwise programme awarded gold to Bayswater Primary School, Devonport Primary School, Stanley Bay School and Vauxhall Primary School. Silver went to Takapuna Grammar School and bronze to Belmont Intermediate School, Belmont Primary School and St Leo’s Catholic School.

Schools north of the bridge took home 31 gold awards, compared to 16 in the rest of Auckland, said AT spokesperson Mark Hannan.

Devonport-Takapuna Local Board chair Mike Cohen said: “We knocked them for six and showed our true commitment to reducing congestion.”

Rat-running barrier for Hauraki gets red light A proposed measure to reduce rat running traffic in Hauraki has been successfully defeated by the residents of the affected area - again.

Harley Road resident Leah Morgan wasn’t happy when she received a letter from Auckland Transport (AT) this May, telling her a temporary water-filled barrier would be installed on Napier Ave to prevent northbound Lake Rd commuters taking shortcuts.

A similar idea had been investigated and canned by North Shore City Council in 2008, after residents of Harley Rd and Napier Ave had petitioned against it. Seven years later, they did it again, and last week AT said the trial was off.

Morgan attended a Devonport-Takapuna Local Board workshop in June, with 150 signatures against the barrier in hand.

Last week, AT spokesperson Mark Hannan said his organisation’s letter had also sparked 48 responses opposing the barrier

idea while only 24 were in support, plus a further 20 letters expressing concern about the trial’s safety.

“Based on this feedback and a meeting with the chair of the local board (Mike Cohen), the trial will not proceed at this time,” he said.

The idea for the trial seems to have originated with local board member Jan O’Connor.

After a Napier Ave resident alerted O’Connor to the rat running on his street, she spent two April mornings counting cars that were cutting corners, clocking more than 200 on one of those occasions.

Morgan believes that number is exaggerated. “The issue was looked at previously, in 2006, and traffic survey data showed that there was not a problem. It is only sporadic.

On a busy morning you would get maybe ten cars trying it,” she says.

Most of the morning traffic on Napier Ave was local or people who park their cars and take the bus into the city, she says.

Blocking off Napier Ave is simply not a good idea, Morgan says. “It’s extreme, like taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut.”

Morgan says rat running occurs for about 30 minutes on weekday mornings at most.

“This adds up to two and a half hours of traffic a week. The left-turn block would be there all the time, 24/7, and it would restrict us locals in getting to and from our residences,” she says.

Installing judder bars, pinch points and stop signs to slow down the traffic on Napier Ave would be a more suitable measure to discourage rat running, she says.

Morgan says a barrier on Napier Ave would set a dangerous precedent.

“It’s not illegal and it happens everywhere.

I use Hart Road to take my kids to school.

That makes me a rat runner. If anyone can ask for their streets to be closed off, that would be taking private interests simply too far,” she says.

A delightful evening Ranging from the traditional Korean fan dance to modern K-pop music, a variety of groups and individuals contributed to the success of Korean Night 2014. The school hall catered for an audience of several hundred people waiting to watch and enjoy.

The school choir, Skat-a-Tak, opened the night with their amazing singing, followed by the traditional Korean fan dance group who truly made a fantastic performance.

Various talented individuals flaunted

their beautiful vocals and beats. At one point, the hall was full of K-pop chants and catchy choruses; at another, the audience let out sighs of relief and gasps of amazement at the Tae-Kwon-Do warriors.

For the audience it was not only entertaining but also inspirational.

Such beautiful blends of culture in the performance and the vocals really accentuated the multicultural aspect of the school and community. The greatest appreciation goes to the organisers,

helpers, performers and the audience.

The great organisation and devoted commitment they made was clearly illustrated by the grand success of the night.

IB Student World Conference, Brisbane The International Baccalaureate (IB) Organisation hosts student world conferences yearly, around the globe in a diverse range of locations. The aim of the student conferences is to give an opportunity for IB students from around the world to join together for a week and engage in discussions surrounding current global issues and possible solutions.

Nine IB students have just returned from attending the International Baccalaureate Student World Conference held in Brisbane, Australia. Accompanied by Mr Holding, we arrived on Sunday 6th of July at the University of Queensland, where we would be accommodated.

With a large number of students from around the world attending conference, we got to learn more about other countries and their culture.

The week was action-packed, with inspirational keynote speakers from different backgrounds speaking on the theme of ‘Empowering Diversity’. Our first speaker explained about prejudice and how simple tests can be used to discover certain biases people have. Topics discussed included refugees, asylum seekers, inequality, indigenous people and poverty. The stories and experiences the speakers shared with us impacted us

as we gained new knowledge.

One speaker who was enjoyed by most students was a former Australian Para-Olympian who shared the uplifting story of her life with a muscle-wasting disease. She motivated us not to let our circumstances affect us, but rather to make choices based on a positive attitude. Based on her cheerful personality it was evident she had put her words into practice.

In allocated GAT (Global Action Team) groups, students had to create a CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) global project to initiate and continue in their school communities after the conference had ended. Through a process of discussion and planning, the projects were all ready for presentation and im-

plementation by the end of the week.

Projects featured an aspect of diversity, ranging from a group that supplied help to children in foster care, to groups spreading diversity in food from various countries.

The experience we had at the conference encourages international understanding, knowledge about current global affairs, developed new friendships and built networks and connections through social media. Students described the conference as a magical learning experience and one student commented that, “It was a worthwhile experience that broadened my perspectives and expanded my circle of friends.”

Eastern Nights THE night the seniors had been waiting for all year finally arrived on July 5th. The school ball. After months of anticipation, students arrived at North Harbour Stadium at 7 o’clock decked out in high heels and swanky ties, prepared for a long but fun night.

Many themes were considered by the organising committee, but the one eventually chosen was Eastern Nights, which allowed for 2-metre high red dragons to frame the entrance. After the success of their set at last year’s ball, the band Black Salt made a return appearance this year, filling up the dance floor early on in the night with their classic and well known covers.

The atmosphere was suitably formal, with everyone dressed impeccably, but also relaxed and friendly. Support from staff was

excellent with a large number in attendance.

Students delighted in each other’s company, the dinner and the dancing.

Courtesy of the 2014 Ball Committee, many awards were given out, including prizes for the Best Hair and Best Couple. This included Best Dressed Teachers – won by Mr Nick Whiting and Mrs Barbara Jenkins (it was the shoes that sealed it). However, the prizes of the highest regard were the Prince and Princess, and King and Queen. The Year 12’s George Farrar and Katie McDougall took out the esteemed Prince and Princess, whilst year 13’s Moniesh Bhindi and Sophie Wynn took out the biggest titles of the night, King and Queen. Even though it is said every year, this 2014 ball will definitely be a night to remember.

Geography quiz team After completing eight rounds in the Maatangi Whenua inter-school Geography competition, Team 2 of Leah Wilks, Jasper Edgar and Nathan Latch placed second and Team 1, Breanna De Gouw, Aidan Aubert and Michael Laws, took out first place, for the North Shore round. The winners of the regional rounds in Auckland were compared and Team 1 placed second overall in the Auckland region, narrowly missing out on first place.

No quarter given… Shore centre Ben Stewart and Kyle Van Niekerk from the Pioneers general play from first five, the Pioneers barely made it out of their half in the first 40 minutes. With the forward platform set the pressure told with some great interplay between forwards and backs as Shore leapt to 24-0 lead at the break.

In recent years Shore has been capable of a purple patch like this only to give away a few soft tries and be battling to win at the end. Not last Saturday. The pressure was on for the whole 80 – an indication of how well this side has been drilled. The score could have been even higher if Walker had kicked a few goals he would usually have slotted blindfolded.

The team has depth as well. Late in the game Shore had the luxury of bringing on replacements of the calibre of Leigh Thompson, Cody Mackie and Dan Hilton-Jones.

The only possible concern is that Shore may have peaked one game too early.

Coach Frano Botica and assistant Gordon Simpson and Blucher will no doubt be doing everything they can this week to make sure that does not happen against the defending champions.

North Shore play Massey at 3pm at North Harbour stadium for the championship.

• It was a champagne day for Shore at Vauxhall Rd last Saturday. The premier reserves side beat Northcote 35-17 to also book a place in the final against Takapuna with a 1.15pm kick off. The club’s under-21 side made the semi-finals with a 29-25 win Out of my way… Shore second five Sio Laumanu on the burst over Silverdale.
