An explosive device may have been washed up on Cheltenham Beach during the January storms.

Police say they were notified by Navy personnel last Saturday, after the defence force was contacted by a resident who reported finding an object on Cheltenham Beach two days earlier.

“She thought the object may have been an explosive device after researching it online,” North Shore Police Senior Sergeant Andy

Burdett says.

Police and Navy personnel made extensive efforts to locate the device, which had been placed in a rubbish bin at the beach. Due to the two-day delay in Police receiving the report, the rubbish bin had been cleared and the device was not located.

Naval experts believe it is possible that the device had been washed ashore. But it was most likely inert and there is no perceived risk to the public.

Time to kill on family holiday up north

Devonport Folk Club Presents...

Along with boogie boards, books and cricket bats, Stanley Bay dad Shayne Waldron packed a pair of rat traps to take on his family holiday this summer.

He and seven-year-old daughter Dorothea caught three rats in the Northland bush near the family bach, inland from Doubtless Bay. Turning rat-catching into a father-daughter holiday activity was inspired by Devonport’s Dirty Rat campaign.

Shayne and Dorothea collected two free rat traps at Devonport Library last year. They have been setting them ever since, near the compost bin at home, baited with peanut butter, but without catching any rats.

Waldron says that might be because he had been laying poison previously.

“The only time we can see that we still have rats is when our avocado tree is fruiting,” he says.

On holiday, the traps worked like a charm.

“We used Nutella because one of Dorothea’s cousins is allergic to peanut butter,” he says.

“Nutella is made out of hazelnuts,” adds Dorothea.

Waldron says Dorothea is quite fearless around dead rats. “She is less fazed by it than I am.”

Waldron, a senior lecturer in mathematics at the University of Auckland, says he fitted right in with other rat-trappers in the Northland bush, where conservation groups and private landowners have been killing possums and stoats for years.

“But we are nowhere near getting on top of the rats,” he says.

He says he will take the traps on future trips.

“And I hope to inspire other people to do the same, to just bring along a rat trap every time you are going out in the bush.”

Young Wakatere sailor wins world championship Fifteen-year-old Devonport sailor Francesco Kayrouz was at the helm of the winning boat at the 29er World Championship in Hong Kong this month.

The Wakatere Boating Club member and Year 11 Rosmini College student says crossing the finish line with crew Jackson Keon, knowing they had won, was “pretty cool”.

The two boys sailed consistently well at the January 2 – 8 regatta, dropping a fourth placing as their worst finish in five races for the final results. They won with 11 points, followed by the Australians who had a score of 20.

It is only the first time New Zealand has won gold in the event since the inaugural Lake Garda regatta in 2000, when Kiwi teams took both gold and bronze medals.

The only other time New Zealand came close to victory was in 2013, when Devonport locals Jack Simpson and Marcus Somerville came second.

Francesco says the win didn’t come easily.

“The competition was pretty tough. Lots of countries like France and Australia raced who had previously done really well at the worlds,” he says.

There was local pressure in New Zealand as well. Even though Francesco and Jackson won the Sir Peter Blake Regatta before heading to Hong Kong, they had recently been pipped at the post by Sebastian Lardies and Scott McKenzie for selection to Yachting New Zealand’s Youth Sailing World Championships team.

Franceso sailed with Oscar Gunn for New Zealand at last year’s youth worlds in Auckland, coming 10th.

Sebastian and Scott competed at this year’s event in Sanya, China, placing 8th, just before they too competed in Hong Kong, placing 5th, with 26 points.

Seamstress left hanging by a thread Local seamstress Sarah Stoute was last week anxiously awaiting a call from Immigration New Zealand to hear whether she and her partner Nicholas Hendrie would have to leave the country immediately.

She and Hendrie, originally from South Africa, appealed having their work visa applications declined in December. They hope to be considered a special case, but to be eligible for a new visa, Stout says she will have to sell her business, Devonport Alterations and Dry Cleaning, as soon as possible.

“And if our appeal is denied, we will have to get on a plane to South Africa next week and I will have to sell it from there,” she says.

“It’s all just turned into one huge problem.”

Stoute bought the business in May 2016 after she had worked for the previous owner.

She has a Diploma in Fashion and Textile Design and had worked as a menswear designer back home. “I really am quite good at what I do,” she says.

She bought the business for $33,000 plus stock, she says.

Her partnership visa depends on Hendrie having a visa first, she says.

Stoute (24) and Hendrie (25) came to New Zealand in 2015, when Hendrie received a one-year work visa in his role as a cricket coach. He is captain of the Grafton United Cricket Club premier team and has also played for Auckland.

The couple’s visas were extended for another year in late 2016.

But when they applied for a second extension last October, the application was declined, because new conditions had been placed on the type of work visa Hendrie had been granted.

Under those revised conditions, he no longer earns enough money to be eligible.

Amar tops international exam results Devonport’s Amar Hamilton-Vincent is one of five Kiwis to achieve a perfect score in the 2017 International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma exams.

The former Kristin School student attained a maximum 45 points – a mark achieved by only 22 Australasian students who completed the two-year IB Diploma programme in November.

Amar says he was “very shocked” to receive the perfect 45 score.

He says key to his success was making a consistent effort over the two years (Year 12 and Year 13) of the IB Diploma. “It was really important for me to always be consolidating what I had learned and to never lose sight of the end goal, which was scoring in the 40s,” he says.

Volunteering at Ngataringa Tennis Club in Stanley Bay – with coaching as well as the club’s computer software and social media projects – contributed to the score. Community service is a requirement of the IB Diploma.

“Despite the large effort I put in at the end to bring my grade up, I was honestly not expecting to get the full seven points,” he says.

So maybe it isn’t surprising that Amar wrote his Extended Essay, a 4,000-word thesis requirement of the IB degree, in Spanish. His thesis explored the history of paella and how it helps explain Spain’s cultural history. After two years of hard study, Amar is now taking a gap year, working and travelling before he wants to get back into academic work. He plans to enrol in software engineering and economics at the University of Sydney next year.

Locals want action at Vauxhall Rd accident spot Another speed-related accident on the Vauxhall Rd bend near Bath St has neighbours wanting council to change the road’s layout – to save lives.

On Sunday at 4.15 am, a white Subaru sped around the corner, crashing into a parked car on the western side of the bend.

The vehicle took off, but the front bumper, including a licence plate, fell off as a result of the accident. It belonged to a car stolen in Stanley Bay earlier that night.

Grant Beck, a resident along the eastern side of the bend, said similar accidents have resulted in the loss of life before and happen so frequently that they are likely to do so again.

“We have had one fatality with a motorcyclist about 15 years ago and a near fatality last year,” he says, referring to four Year 13 Takapuna Grammar (TGS) students who crashed into a power pole in April 2017.

Beck says he helped pull a driver out of a crashed vehicle about five years ago and that his son, Logan Dunning Beck, assisted the TGS boys last year .

Tess McGregor, who lives opposite Beck, says both she and her husband Grant usually know of an impending accident a couple of seconds before the car actually crashes.

“We hear them coming and you can tell when they will lose control. After the crash there is this silence,” she says “Grant and I have a routine – he immediately goes outside and I call the police. We did the same this time round and I was just speaking to them when I heard the car start up again and saw it leaving. So I told the police it was a hit and run,” she says.

Beck says the TGS students’ accident last year was a typical scenario. “A young, male

driver comes up the road from the Vauxhall Rd shops too fast, loses control, slides over to our side of the road and ends up in the gutter, lamp or power pole,” he says.

“Occasionally, the driver will overcorrect and the car ends up back on the left side and crashes there,” he says. This is possibly what happened on Saturday night.

Beck says it is unusual for accidents to be caused by drivers coming from the other direction. However, when his sister had parked her car outside on Saturday, someone had crashed into it, damaging two panels, he says.

Owner John Sweetman couldn’t believe his eyes the next morning. He was having a cup of coffee on the front porch of his parents’ Glen Rd home and his mother asked where the car was.“ I just sat there with my head in my hands and couldn’t believe it,” he says.

Sweetman, a third-generation Devonport local who currently lives with his parents, can’t comprehend what is happening in his hometown. “I went to kindy and Stanley Bay School here, lived here all my life and never experienced anything like it. It was honestly safer over in Mt Wellington,” he says.

He didn’t hear anything last Saturday night, but when the white Subaru was previously stolen , he did.

“I had just come back from a weekend with

friends in Taranaki. I briefly went back out to get my phone charger from the car, and once I was inside, I heard its engine start again.

“I ran out and shouted, which is maybe why the thieves dropped it on Kiwi Rd. But I still had to replace the ignition barrel and a broken window,” he says.

“About a week ago I received a call from the police to say they had caught the offender. I haven’t even had time yet to fill out the impact statement before the car was stolen again.I was planning on selling it and had gotten it all checked out last year. I even had a ‘For Sale’sign printed already,” he says.

“I don’t own a hell of a lot of things and most of them were in there. It’s not ideal, to say the least.”

Sweetman has owned the Subaru for nine years . “The engine is good. It has never broken down in all the time I owned it. It looks a bit like a boy-racer car. I don’t drive it like that at all, but maybe my next car will be a Toyota Starlet or something innocuous,” he says.

The vehicles will initially operate within 3km of the ferry terminal, but that radius could expand to 5km or 6km in future, he says.

AT established the grounds for the pilot with a two-week trial in October 2017.

AT signed up 40 local commuters using the Devonport ferry and rented an electric car. The participants were able to order the service by sending a text or making a phone call and were twice asked for feedback.

“That trial was done to find out whether there was enough demand, whether it was economically viable and whether it was technically feasible,” says another AT spokesperson, Mark Hannan.

Fountain in a shameful state During the holiday break I had occasion to walk past the fountain near the Devonport Library. I was shocked to see its appallingly neglected condition.

As I gaped at the frightful state of this memorial to two sons of Devonport who died in the Boer War, a few tourists wandered past. I wished I could throw a tarpaulin over it, to hide its shameful state. The top is off it, and there’s very little water in the bricked

pool at its base, which has dead leaves and a large branch off a phoenix palm lying in it, among other detritus.

It seems symbolic of the sadly inadequate service given to maintenance of our parks and reserves since we fell into the hands of people across the harbour, who just don’t care about matters on the North Shore.

Shame on them!

Our bin runneth over The rubbish bin near the park entrance at the north end of the Northboro Reserve walkway (near Northboro Rd and adjacent to the pumping station) has not been emptied for a long time. It is overflowing significantly and is grossly unhealthy and unkempt – in spite of the overflow being collected into plastic bags by local people.

It is a very high-use bin as it is at the junction of several shared paths. This bin overflow has been a very frequent problem ever since the new council contractors were appointed and has been reported many times by different local people. It seems that the contractors are too lazy to walk to this bin because it is a short distance from the

Has the law been changed? If so, I would like to know.

Today was very disappointing: I was seated having a coffee outside the Esplanade and along wandered a little dog off the lead, who did its business on the grass near our table. No owner in sight and the dog mess not cleared up.

Public need say in developments that impact infrastructure The zoning rules in Auckland’s Unitary Plan allow for significant intensification of housing in many suburban residential areas. This means existing productive land outside the city limits can continue well into the foreseeable future as market gardening, orcharding etc. Such an outcome is very worthwhile and commendable.

Unfortunately, significant potential adverse effects may arise from redevelopment of existing housing areas when infrastructure upgrades do not precede development.

The article “Thirty-three homes proposed for five sites” in the December 8 issue of the Flagstaff outlines Ngati Whatua’s development of 0.3894 hectares of land at 50-58 Roberts Ave, Bayswater. The article reports the resource consent application “says there are no traffic issues raised” and that “its effects are less than minor and therefore should not be publicly notified”.

The 33 houses include 71 bedrooms, which represents a potential occupancy of 142 persons, and possibly at least one car per household added to the already overloaded Lake and Esmonde Rds during commuter hours and throughout the day on weekends.

Suppose the expressed opinion that “there are no traffic issues raised” is correct. This would imply that traffic from other proposed developments – such as the 300 units at Bayswater Marina, the 270 apartments and serviced suites in the Ngataringa Ryman Village, at least 300 residential units in the Hillary Cres redevelopment of 87 former Navy housing units, and a potential 700 units on the balance of the Roberts Ave site – can be accommodated.

Tui’s “yeah, right” is the politest expression that applies to the reported comment “there are no traffic issues raised”, as the gridlock that will ensue if even a small percentage of the 1570 residential units are built is self-evident. Clearly a development such as

proposed in Roberts Ave will have significant adverse effects and the application should be publicly notified.

Public notification will allow the community to present submissions on a number of issues, including the capability of existing infrastructure, i.e. roads, sewers, schools, and medical services to meet these increasing demands; the potential increase in waterways pollution with particular reference to Ngataringa Bay and the international significance of this as a shorebird sanctuary; the potential adverse effects of increased people and their pets, dogs in particular, on the endangered bird species such as the New Zealand dotterel that nest in Ngataringa Bay; and the potential adverse effects from the loss of open space and trees, both consequences of intensification.

Stanley Bay Yuletide tradition has mass appeal

Dunking and diving… families and friends jumped off Stanley Bay wharf on Christmas Day

On Sunday 17th of December, you were in the Riba Fish ‘n’ Chips shop in Devonport. I was sitting at the window table in black shorts and a white shirt.

We had a brief conversation about eating fish ‘n’chips at two in the afternoon in a heatwave.

You had shorts and a large widebrimmed Panama hat. You purchased a bottle of water and on your way out gave me the most beautiful and elegant smile that I haven’t seen from a lady in many many years. I was speechless and that... moment... was lost as you walked out and on your way...

But, last week, about the 9th of January, I think I saw you out running, and you ran down my drive in Roberts Ave, and said something to me as my door was open. I missed what you said and by the time I hung up the phone you were gone... again another...moment...lost.

Maybe you were just looking at my “pope” mobile scooter. I’m reasonably sure you are a local... If you would like to get together for a coffee, a chat or even fish ‘n’ chips (ha ha), please call me, I would like that.

Around 60 locals started Christmas Day wharf-jumping in fancy dress – the biggest crowd in six years to join in on the Stanley Bay tradition.

Linda Simmons, who started the annual event, says it began when her family invited a few friends to come along.

The following year she invited her

neighbours on Second Ave, and then a few more local members of the area’s neighbourhood-watch group.

“This year the notice was spread by those who have jumped before, to their friends,” she says.

“It’s a fun thing to do on Christmas Day, gets the kids away from just thinking about presents and makes everyone laugh a lot.”

South Korean officials seek inspiration in Devonport South Korean officials on a research trip to New Zealand visited Devonport community workshop the Claystore last month to find out how to keep retired men busy.

Claystore volunteer George Crook says four local government staff from the small province of Jeollabuk-do had read about the Claystore online and contacted him by email to make an appointment.

They were looking for ideas on how to provide activities for retired men, an increasing population in the province, he says.

“They had a good look around and took a lot of photographs. They said they liked what we did and that something similar could work well in Jeollabuk-do,” he says.

Crook is one of six volunteers who man the Claystore at 27 Lake Rd, Monday to Saturday from 9am until noon.

He says the locals using the community facility are in fact a diverse mixture of men and women of all ages, either wanting help to fix an item or keen to use some of the Claystore’s many specialised tools.

The Claystore opened 35 years ago and was one of the first community facilities of its kind in New Zealand, Crook says.

Glengarry Devonport got rid of plastic carrier bags just before Christmas, and Bookmark has been phasing out plastic bags for a year, with the introduction of paper carrier bags in various sizes.

Glengarry Devonport manager Michael O’Flannigan said the company’s 14 stores in Auckland and three in Wellington went plastic-bag-free after a few months’ consideration.

Nearly 400 local residents have responded to a survey on the future development of Bayswater Marina.

Bayswater Community Committee (BCC) chair Gay Richards says it is “a good response”.

The Bayswater Marina Future Use Survey was conducted with the help of BCC volunteers. It asked local residents for their views on future development of marina land for recreational, transport or residential use.

“The survey results are currently being analysed by Buzz Channel and will be

available in a few weeks time,” Richards says.

The survey was funded by the DevonportTakapuna Local Board with an $11,000 grant.

The board will base its feedback to future resource consent applications by Bayswater Marina Ltd and Auckland Transport on the survey results.

Richards said Simon Herbert, director of Bayswater Marina Ltd and owner of Empire Capital Ltd, indicated late last year he would lodge a resource consent for residential development of the marina land mid-year.

Devonport girls share in national under-15 cricket victory Four young Devonport cricketers starred in the Auckland U15 Hearts Squad that beat Canterbury in the national under-15 tournament final in Whanganui on January 11.

Anna Browning, Libby Easterbrook, Kennedy Scott and Ruby Worrall say that while they found the early tournament matches somewhat easy, the final was tough.

The girls went into it unbeaten, having won their matches against Canterbury, Wellington, Central Districts, Northern Districts and Otago on the three preceding days.

But their team had a shaky start during the first inning of the final. “We bowled first and we were getting smashed at the start,” says Anna. “We didn’t get a wicket in the first 15 overs, so that put us under a lot of pressure,” adds Ruby.

Canterbury’s first partnership ended with 81 runs and the side went on to score 131/6 in its 30 overs.

But the Auckland girls were up to the task, scoring 132/6 with 23 balls to spare.

All-rounder Anna, the youngest of the four Devonport cricketers, was the star player, taking two wickets and scoring 50 runs, including10 boundaries. Libby was the second-highest scorer with 18 runs, and Ruby scored eight.

Junior World Series marks 25th year

Stanley Bay ferry service under council control An Auckland Transport subsidy seems to be what will keep the Stanley Bay ferry running this year.

Last week, Fullers signed a temporary contract with Auckland Transport (AT), “relinquishing the right to run the service commercially under the Land Transport Management Act,” according to an AT press release.

Until then, the Stanley Bay service was one of several commercially run Fullers ferry routes, as are those to Devonport and Waiheke.

AT says the temporary contract will bring about a more reliable service through a higher level of AT oversight and performance control.

Former Fullers CEO Doug Hudson told the

Flagstaff in March 2017 that his company wanted to drop the Stanley Bay service unless it received a government subsidy in future.

Without such a subsidy, the Stanley Bay ferry was a “loss-making service,” he said.

For years, North Shore Ward councillor Chris Darby has been campaigning for the Stanley Bay service to be under AT control.

“Performance standards are now in place and AT had no opportunity to implement those before,” he says.

Darby says he is lobbying Minister of Transport Phil Twyford for Devonport’s ferry route to become under AT control as well, to ensure performance standards are lifted.

Fullers has already experienced a number ferry issues since the beginning of the year. On both the morning rush hour of Monday 15 January and in the evening rush hour of Wednesday 17 January, four ferries from Auckland to Devonport, as well as their return trips, were cancelled.

On Sunday 14 January, the 5.45pm ferry to Auckland could not accommodate all passengers heading back to a cruise ship. Fullers staff asked them queue for 30 minutes to wait for the next ferry.

The situation prompted Devonport-Takapuna Local Board member Mike Cohen to file an of-

ficial complaint with Fullers’ Chief Executive Mike Horne.

North Shore Ward councillor Chris Darby says: “I’ve had quite a gutsful of postponements and cancellations on the Devonport and Stanley Bay ferry runs. Commuter frustration has reached boiling point and change has to happen.”
