Community defibrillator installed at Devonport home

Thinking outside the box… initial concern for neighbours sparked support for the general public.

Graeme Selkirk is on a mission to save lives.

The Cheltenham resident has installed a defibrillator outside his front door that can be accessed round the clock.

Selkirk wants all New Zealand automated external defibrillators (AEDs) moved outdoors to be accessed to help anybody suffering heart problems.

He and wife Wendy have lived at 33 Tainui Rd since 1975.

“A lot of our neighbours are long-time friends, our kids grew up together and now we are all getting older and the risk of someone having a heart attack one day is there,” he says.

As “a preventative sort of guy,” Selkirk says that “with Cheltenham’s distance from any ambulance, it was pretty clear to me that we need an AED located here that is available 24/7 to all of us.”

And by “all of us,” Selkirk doesn’t just mean his neighbours, but anyone who suffers a cardiac arrest nearby.

The all-hours public access became important to Selkirk when he realised that Devonport has nine defibrillators that are each installed in venues with limited access, such as New World, the library, the squash club and the rugby club.

“That ours is installed in our driveway and that it is available 24/7 to the general public is the critical bit,” he says. It is the only local device on the website aedlocations.co.nz tagged with “24/7” access.

Selkirk’s waterproof machine and box, purchased through St John, cost nearly $5,000.

But neighbours’ contributions have offset more than half of that, he says.

A St John officer gave a training session in Selkirk’s front yard, but Selkirk says even an untrained person can easily use the device. “It actually talks you through what you have to do, chest compressions and all,” he says.

Selkirk is now exploring ways to move all defibrillators outside indoor venues with limited access times.

“The reason they are not installed outside are issues of insurance and the cost of a waterproof box. But I have got a group of people together and we are looking at removing those barriers

It was two against one in the Independent Hearing Panel’s decision on Ryman Healthcare’s resource consent application released last week.

While commissioners Kitt Littlejohn and John Hill took on board worries about the development’s size and bulk, the traffic it will generate, and the disruption its construction will cause, they largely ignored the concerns in their majority decision to approve the application.

Fellow commissioner Dave Serjeant disagreed. He raised issues of bulk, location and building design and said the application should

be declined.

Serjeant said the design did not respond to the local site but was identical to a Ryman proposal for Blockhouse Bay, that images presented by Ryman “cannot be relied on” and concluded that the application overall did not meet council’s assessment criteria.

Serjeant was concerned that granting consent was setting a precedent for Ngati Whatua’s remaining peninsula land with similar zoning allowances. He said it would be “unfortunate” if the Ryman approval “were seen to support the proliferation of large, bulky buildings that have little or no variation in built form.”

Bike thieves chased down by Devonport mums Two Devonport mums were more than a match for a pair of South Auckland bike thieves.

Helene Thomas and Michelle Millington sprang into action after they noticed bikes missing from the Thomas’s Vauxhall Rd home.

Teenagers had stolen two bikes while the Millington and Thomas families sat in the back garden at around 4 pm after spending the day together at Cheltenham Beach.

Millington and Thomas jumped in a car in search of the bikes, going first to Devonport Domain, then to Narrow Neck, and on to Devonport ferry terminal, where they chanced upon one of the thieves on the boardwalk.

Millington says she wasn’t wearing much more than a cowboy hat and a bikini when she ran after the thief.

“But I didn’t care. I saw him on the bike and he saw me too, with my cowboy hat and all. He went inside the terminal, but I was after him by then,” she says.

At the same time, Thomas cut off the teenagers’ escape route inside the ferry building and together the two women confronted him.

“He pretended to want to hit us for a moment, but we didn’t flinch,” Thomas says.

“We were so not scared,” says Millington, adding that she didn’t mince her words when she told him to get off her bike.

“But I was kind of gutted that he was on my old dunger worth about twenty dollars and not my husband’s brand-new mountain bike.

So I told him I wasn’t leaving without the other bike. At that point, I went a bit mental,” Millington says.

As Auckland Transport’s security staff held on to the thief and police were called, the teenager said the second bike was at Britomart, as the other thief had caught the ferry to town.

Millington’s husband Dave, wearing togs and jandals, took the next ferry across to look for the bike and thief, but without success.

Meanwhile, police arrived, took statements

“By the time we all went home it was 8 pm. But at 11.30pm, there was a knock on our door and it was the police officer with Dave’s bike,” Millington says.

Police had spotted the second thief in the afternoon cycling without a helmet and

stopped him.

“They noticed the bike was brand new and that he wasn’t wearing any cleats for it.

So they asked him to call his parents, but he ran off,” says Millington, She was so delighted with the outcome, “I baked a cake for the police officer.”

Here she learnt ballet, jazz, hip-hop, contemporary, lyrical, commercial jazz, tap, musical theatre, drama and singing.

On returning to New Zealand, Emily has used her many years of experience to teach in dance studios, preschools and primary and high schools throughout Auckland.

Her dream of owning her own dance studio presented itself when Devonport School of Dance was offered for sale. She is grateful for the opportunity to be able to continue the proud traditions of Mrs Snowball in new dance studios just across the road at 15 Wynyard Street.

Emily loves Devonport and has a longstanding family connection with the area, including her great-great-aunt Miss Mary Macdonald, who was a foundation teacher, senior mistress and headmistress of Takapuna Grammar.

In term four of last year, Emily began teaching classes at Devonport School of Dance, and had the wonderful experience of helping students prepare for The Nutcracker with The Imperial Russian Ballet Company.

This brought back memories of dancing with the company as a gnome many years ago.

The opening of the new studios is planned for late February-early March, but classes will start in Harmony Hall and St Leo’s Hall from the beginning of February. Although ballet and contemporary will continue to be the face of the school, Emily is excited to be introducing new dance styles and initiatives for all ages, with a wonderful team of teachers.

Margot McRae – Heritage advocate and QSM recipient It is somewhat ironic that just months after Devonport Heritage folded after 24 years, one of its leading lights Margot McRae received a New Year honour for services to heritage preservation.

Devonport Heritage was put into receivership after the Masonic apartments developer pursued it for court costs.

But McRae, who was awarded a Queen’s Service Medal, has consigned the Devonport Heritage setback to history.

In fact, she says she wants to get a new heritage group off the ground – one that appeals to a broader group, with new people and one that has a new name. She is planning to launch it with a public meeting in March.

“I don’t think we can relax about heritage preservation in Devonport.

There are plenty of issues left, including Devonport village where we now have a 13-metre height restriction as well as the ever-increasing pressures of tourism,” she says.

McRae’s focus is not only keeping heritage buildings from being demolished. It’s about respecting New Zealand history. “Even if it is only 100 years old, it’s all we’ve got and worth preserving because the buildings tell a story about how we have evolved as a country. And they are also lovely,” she says.

McRae says she developed a fondness for vintage objects as a young girl. “I collected old books as a teen, including leather-bound Dickens novels and Aesop’s fables. I was so into it that people gave them to me for my birthdays,” she says.

McRae grew up in Christchurch. Her love of old buildings was sparked by summers spent in Akaroa, where her ancestors arrived in the 1840s, she says.

As a planning commissioner on the Devonport Community Board in the mid-1990s, she learned about heritage rules and how to implement them well, she says.

“It’s all about finding a balance between what the homeowner wants to do and preserving the integrity of the house.”

She joined Devonport Heritage 20 years ago. “That’s when I became a lot more of an activist, a pain in the neck for a whole lot of people, I guess.”

McRae says you don’t tend to make friends as a heritage campaigner.

“But you can’t worry about that. You have to be up for a certain amount of conflict and antagonism to defend the community good against individual property-owners’ rights. And I am. I just have a really deep love for this place,” she says.

When asked about her achievements, McRae mentions the preservations of the old Navy buildings that now house the Navy Museum.

Other accomplishments, she says, are less visible.

“It’s the awareness we have raised, the Devonport identity we have helped create, as well as the demolitions that have not taken place because we put people off.”

Working for Devonport’s greater good… Margot McRae McRae has been co-chair of the The Victoria Theatre Trust since 2010 – a position in which she tends get a lot of positive feedback from locals, she says. Work continues on restoring the theatre.

When not busy in the community, McRae, a former journalist and playwright, films documentaries on heritage renovation projects, including one on the restoration of 33 Mays Street and the St James Theatre. This is in between helping look after her four grandchildren.

McRae says she is still in disbelief over the QSM award. “In the early Devonport Heritage days, we were considered extremists. That someone like me now gets an award for the work we did marks how far heritage has come in New Zealand,” she says.

As for being singled out among Devonport’s heritage champions, she says. “All of my work has been teamwork, really, but I guess I’m happy to take one for the team here.”

Mt Victoria vehicle ban rejected by board The move to ban car access to the top of Mt Victoria has been opposed by the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board.

The Maunga Authority – which manages Auckland’s volcanic cones – announced late last year it planned to restrict cars on the mountain, starting in 2017.

However, the board at its December meeting voted to oppose the measure and said the authority had failed to connect with the local community on the issue.

“While acknowledging the importance of the maunga to Maori, it is an integral part of Devonport village. Its commanding position dominates the Devonport peninsula, providing a focal point for all as well as an anchor for the village,” said a notice of motion put to the board by member Mike Cohen.

Open meetings: legal opinion sought by board A legal opinion on whether all council presentations to the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board can be held in public has been requested.

At the board’s December meeting, chair Grant Gillon requested the advice be provided to its first 2017 meeting (to be held on February 21).

In its last term, the board had held all its council workshops in public. It was the only local board to do so and council staff were opposed to the practice, saying more free discussion of early ideas and proposals could

be held if the workshops were private.

However, the majority of Devonpoty-Takapuna LocalBoard members wanted the workshops open to the public so residents and the media could be alerted to council programmes early on.

The Flagstaff has also questioned the closed workshops. There was a danger that discussions of projects happened at the behind-closed-doors meetings, and information to the open board meetings effectively became rubber-stamping exercises, lacking in transparency.

Narrow Neck freedom-camping pilot dropped Plans to trial freedom camping at Narrow Neck beach this summer were dropped at the eleventh hour by Auckland Council.

The proposed pilot for Narrow Neck (and Milford Reserve) was abandoned in December

after consultation with the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board.

When council announced the pilots late last year, the plans were greeted with surprise by board members and local residents.

“Issues of safety were given as a reason to prevent vehicles being driven on the mount. But the only serious incident that I can recollect in 20 years involved a cyclist who badly injured a pedestrian.

“As a result the Devonport Community Board erected traffic signs to inform all to reduce speed, especially cyclists,” Cohen said.

There was also concern that the reservoir on top of Mt Victoria would be deconstructed, he said.

A liaison committee has been set up for local boards to give ideas to the Maunga Authority, but the committee was “marginalised and basically inoperative,” Cohen said.

No response had been received from the Maunga Authority by the time the Flagstaff went to press.

Maunga Authority slow to take up local volunteers’ help Multiple offers by local residents to help with rat control on Takarunga/Mt Victoria, seem to have fallen on deaf ears with the Maunga Authority.

The authority, recently employed ecological restoration and consultancy firm Te Ngahere to set up rat monitoring tunnels and rat bait stations on the mountain.

Mt Victoria’s unofficial guardian Roger Giles is not happy about it. He says he and numerous other locals have repeatedly offered to help control rats on the maunga over the last few months, but have been kept at arm’s length.

“Maybe they think we are not competent. But if they want to go ahead and pay someone to do it, it’s my ratepayer money too that’s being spent,” says Giles.

Another local who wants to help with rat control on Takarunga is Church St resident Michael Fielding, who approached the Maunga Authority with the idea of a halo of rat traps around the bottom of Mt Victoria, and offered to set, monitor and replenish them.

At the Devonport Environmental Network Meeting held in December, Takapuna Grammar School student Ngaire Metcalf also said she wanted to work on a project involving the tracking of rats on Mount Victoria.

Meanwhile, the authority seems to be taking its time with getting volunteers involved.

Authority spokesperson Mike George said:“Yes, volunteers will be engaged to pick up the ongoing monitoring and maintenance of these bait stations. We are working through the design of a volunteer programme now, including the process for calling for volunteers.”

Giles, who has put thousands of hours into maintaining Mt Victoria over the years, says there is nothing left for him to do: “I’m not allowed to pull up weeds, I can’t kill rats, in fact I can’t even track them,” he says.

For the last eight months, the authority has been focused on trapping possums.

George says no possums were caught on the mountain during that time. “We know that possums were present in the area last year, so the fact that none have been caught in our traps is good news for the maunga,” he says.

Calm under fire keeps the lunch orders coming Manuka Restaurant staff kept calm and carried on cooking during a recent chimney fire at the popular Victoria Rd eatery.

As alarmed passers-by watched huge plumes of smoke come off the rooftop, and saw three fire engines arrive, café staff were unflappable.

Cooks kept the stovetop burners going and waiters continued to serve food.

Devonport Volunteer Fire Brigade officer in charge John Ellington said the station received a call on Sunday 8 January at 2:45 pm, saying there was a fire at the Patriot.

“But as we came down Victoria Rd, we could see the smoke and that it was across the street at Manuka,” he says.

Three fire engines attended. Officers took equipment and a hose inside the building.

But in the end it took only a splash of water to put out the small fire in the pizza oven that had caused all the smoke.

“I’d say we used about two cups of water to put out the fire in the pizza oven and the steam extinguished the flames further up the chimney,” Ellington says.

“When we got to the office on the second floor, the chimney flue was red hot and glowing but the fire was contained in the flue and there was no damage to the building.”

“There was a lot of smoke, but it wasn’t really a fire as such,” he says.

The fire was caused by a build-up of soot

in the restaurant’s chimney.

“We recommended to have it checked and cleaned before they kept using the pizza oven,” Ellington says.

We had a guest arrive out of the blue just prior to Christmas. I noticed we had run out of the useful maps we usually hand out to visitors. No worries, he said “I’ll just pop down to the visitor centre and pick some up.”

He was shocked when I told him we didn’t have one. Worse still, he was an Australian travel writer working on a guide to the North Island. He loved Devonport, but I can’t guarantee the lack of a visitor centre won’t get a mention.

The fact that Devonport – “the gateway to the North Shore” – has gone a summer without an information centre is a disgrace.

It is a very poor reflection on Auckland Council, its property and tourism arms and all those at city hall who happily accept wages paid for by the rates of Devonport businesses, which have been treated shabbily. How hard would it have been to set up something temporarily?

On a related note, the Flagstaff’s new publication Destination Devonport – (partially launched to fill the visitor centre gap) – has been well received. We printed

10,000 copies and they will be all gone in February. We have also had hundreds of hits online. When I’ve been loading up stands with copies, I’ve chatted to tourists as well, who have welcomed the publication wholeheartedly. One had just come off the Auckland ferry and actually asked me directions to the visitor information centre! I explained the situation to him and said Destination Devonport might help. It was a sunny day and he happily set off on one of the historic walks profiled.

The council crackdown on pavement signs has sparked an innovative marketing response from Devonport businesses. Some have been decorating bikes with signage and attaching them to cycle stands. The Flagstaff reported on the Devonport Chocolates bike prior to Christmas. Since then, the NZ Herald picked up on the story, and Devonport Lingerie and Devonport Flowers have joined in. The bikes are attractive and add to the ambience of Devonport.

However, I wonder how long it will be until Auckland Council cracks down on this as well. The stands are to encourage cycling and not meant for long-term parking. I wonder what Bike Devonport thinks about it as well.

And what happens if even more business bikes sprout up? It’s a bit like a wandering dog. One is okay but if there are dozens it becomes an issue.

Relief that Windsor Oak saved Thank goodness the oak tree in Windsor Reserve has been saved. I hope there will be no going back now on the decision not to chop it down.

A little digging in Auckland Council Archives and the Auckland Library Research Centre confirms that the oak is in fact a Windsor Oak grown from an acorn from an ancient oak in Windsor Great Park dating from the reign of the first Queen Elizabeth. Auckland-born Hector Bolitho, who spent his childhood in Devonport and later became a royal biographer, sent acorns back to his cousin in Stanley Bay

Double-dipping at the tip?

Whilst I appreciate that the Devonport recycling centre needs to pay its way, there are unusual practises being pursued there that give cause for concern.

Firstly, if you have a perfectly good recyclable item, you have to pay to dump it and then one of the staff has to rescue it, clean it etc if it’s got dirty in the dumping process, and then present it for sale.

Secondly, when dumping material, the weight is rounded up to the next category for charging purposes.

A canny friend asked for a credit in weight from the difference between the actual dumped weight and the weight he was charged for. Of course, no chance.

I cannot understand why they can’t charge for the actual weight dumped, nor can I see the sense in making someone pay to dump a perfectly good recyclable item?

Clearly it’s all about extracting the maximum they can out of a compliant, middle class, financially confident community, that is in effect a captive audience, which isn’t going to drive all the way to Constellation Drive to dump some rubbish. With a bit of forethought it is possible to considerably reduce the need to visit the recycling centre.

If possible, one should have a compost bin to take the majority of compostable material. There is money to be made in scrap metal – even a tap is worth something at the scrap-metal dealers in Hillside Road. Despite living at the end of a cul-de-sac, items we put on the verge with a ‘free’ notice on disappear quickly. Otherwise there are websites to sell items on.

Devonport was a burst of international cricket colour earlier this week with 272 youngsters taking part in North Shore Cricket Club’s Junior World Series.

Aged between seven and 14, the cricketers played at various venues around Devonport, including Devonport Domain, Vauxhall Reserve, Bayswater, Stanley Bay and Belmont Intermediate.

Players came from around Auckland, and one from Australia joined the action as well.

The tournament was due to run over three days and finish on Wednesday – just prior to the North Shore Premiers T 20 semi-final match against Surburbs New Lynn.

The Junior World Series is in its 24th year.

New Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers

After more than eight years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started eight years ago by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”.

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs: It

uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots far more effectively and returns quality of life

Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car.

Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

This is pure logic, if a machine is out of alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline.

The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life.

Trash to treasure offers glimpse inside Victorian villa Roadside heritage discards and family donations have been reassembled into a villa interior display at Devonport Museum, giving visitors a snapshot of how a Devonport home looked in 1900.

The bones of the display were mostly collected from the side of Tainui Road, says museum president Alastair Fletcher.

“The skirting is from a renovation at 1 Tainui, ceiling boards are from Pari Rikihana’s house at number 9 and the fireplace, including the tiles, are from the house next to the dairy on Vauxhall Road,” Fletcher says.

Other items had been donated to the museum over the years, such as portraits of Mr and Mrs Edson who lived at 11 Tudor St and which were donated by Dennis Hamblin in 1994.

The willow pattern china tea set was brought to New Zealand by ancestors of Devonport’s Oliver family in 1860, and donated by Kay Oliver in 2013.

The framed image of a girl from the home of Elsie Hitchcock (who lived at 33 Waterview Rd) was donated in 2007. Officially Opening Devonport cooking School

and NEW Amazing After-School Programme!

Cook, Laugh, Learn and Eat in great company! This is what Devonport’s new Soulsprite Kitchen undeniably sets the stage for, and what local husband-andwife team Kate and Ben Walden hope to achieve in their third Devonport village venue.

Patrons of Soulsprite Kitchen will experience elbow-to-elbow feasting in an ambient new open clay-brick dining room, after cooking alongside a variety

of esteemed chefs and nutrition experts.

The first courses take up to ten people and start in Febuary this year and are presented by: NZ’s top organic food blogger, Buffy Ellen Gill; esteemed nutritionalist and endurance athlete, Mikki Williden; and a native cook teaching Sri Lankan authentic curries.

Soulsprite Kitchen is up a passageway between Henri café and Subway on Victoria Road. The fit-out was a summer

upcycle project, undertaken by Ben, with some interior-design direction from his 8-months pregnant wife. The space is both playful and refreshingly modern with lots of greenery, upcycled colourful 1960s kitchen units and revived furniture, including a long dining table made from an old ship deck. It boasts three fully functional kitchen stations with lots of hobs and ovens so all classes can be very ‘hands-on’, and an adjoining dining room.

“Long ago that part of the building was a bakery, whereby a horse and cart would pull up to the cellar in Devon Lane (now our Boxsprite fitness studio) and collect fresh product for market. Above the kitchen is the TRX and Pilates studio. We’re loving having everything in the same building, especially one so beautiful and historic,” says Kate (Soulsprite Director).

Ben and Kate believe people will want to come to one of the best seaside villages in the world to join in cooking classes and gain healthy cooking know-how. Nevertheless, their primary objective is to combine fitness with good food and to help local kids, teens and adults enjoy vitality, resilience and lasting friendships.

Soulsprite Kitchens will also host KIDSPRITE ACADEMY – a ‘one-of-a-kind’ after-school programme starting this Term 1. Kids 5-12yrs should enrol now as there is limited space.

The programme includes professionally led fitness class options (dance, boxing, self-defence, TRX and more), cooking classes and tutoring in maths, literacy, language and art. This amazing initiative is open to all local kids with school-pickup and late pick-up (6.30pm) available.

Back to school health tips for happy, healthy kids

It’s back to school time again. To make sure your kids have the best start to a great school year, we have a few simple tips and tricks to support their health and wellbeing.

NUTRALIFE

Nutrition: Children need a nutrient-dense diet. Think wholefoods, and get kids involved in being creative in the kitchen.

Avoid processed sugary snacks as much as possible. Make the most of the yummy fruits in season.

Start the day with some scrambled eggs with a few fresh vegetables mixed in, served over a slice of wholegrain toast.

Omega-3 fatty acids are healthy fats important for brain health and development. They are found in: oily fish (salmon and tuna), avocado, flaxseed oil, walnuts, almonds and olive oil. Encourage kids to try new foods and incorporate these into their diet. Or try a daily fish oil supplement like Nordic Naturals children’s DHA.

Devonport Garden and Floral Art Club celebrates 70 years

Members of the Devonport Garden and Floral Art Club at the club’s birthday lunch To celebrate its 70th anniversary, the Devonport Garden and Floral Art Club put on a lunch party last December.

Most of the club’s remaining 44 members, some of whom are in their mid-nineties, were present.

Former club president Alma Murray says 2016 was a year of adjustment. The club is now run by a committee since none of the members

stood for the president position last January.

It was also the first year the club didn’t hold an annual show and they won’t run one this year either.

“I think we are probably done with those for now,” Murray says. The focus now is on the garden club section rather than the floral arts,” she says.

“For the past years we have found it hard to

keep going, so we are trying to be more relaxed about things and coast along a bit more.”

The club struggles to attract new members because times have changed, she says.

“People have different interests now, and they garden very differently too.”

The club still meets every second Monday at 10.30 am at St Leo’s School Hall. For more information, contact Murray at 445 8602.
