A woman challenged for illegally taking cockles from Cheltenham Beach carried on poaching even after her lawbreaking was pointed out.

Local Neil Raines was walking on the beach at low tide on Sunday 20 January when he decided to confront the woman, as he knew how scarce the cockles are.

“I know the effort that has gone into conserving shellfish. And I know people do rape and pillage them and any take is not allowed.”

A permanent ban has been in place under the Fisheries Act, and a rahui, since the early 1990s, after the shellfish population plummeted at Cheltenham Beach.

Raines approached the woman politely, to give her the benefit of the doubt, saying it was illegal to take shellfish.

“In my opinion, she knew exactly what she was taking. I said, ‘Put them back.’ She kept on collecting them.”

The woman, who had a European accent, said she didn’t speak English.

So, Raines took her over to a sign with a picture illustrating the permanent ban on taking shellfish and pointed out the potential $10,000 fine.

“She didn’t want a bar of it,” he says.

The woman then put the bag of cockles down in the water, maybe to pick them up later.

Raines sought help from a Cheltenham man, who had a mobile phone, and they called for a fisheries officer on 0800 4POACHER. Raines left the bag as evidence, but said, when he returned from walking around North Head 40 minutes later, no officer had arrived.

The Ministry of Primary Industries said it did not send an officer to the scene as although the call was received at 2 pm, it was “historic” – it had already occurred and the offenders had left the scene.

As a passionate fisher and diver, Raines is concerned about the loss of shellfish from Cheltenham and thinks it is important people take action if they see poaching.

A combination of natural and human forces is likely to blame, but the report notes the reliable monitoring carried out by locals.

Georgina Greville spearheaded the shellfish surveys, carried out by the Cheltenham Beach Caretakers, every six then 12 months, from 1993 until a few years ago.

She says a couple of decades ago, there was only a small bagful of cockles, or tuangi, in total on the beach and they and pipi are still rare.

“I think what this man did was exactly what needs to happen. People need to politely confront, being friendly and not aggressive,” says Greville.

In comments on social media, Devonport people have thanked Raines and praised him for approaching the poacher in a polite and respectful way.

Submissions open for proposed Gull service station A proposed new 24-hour Gull service station in Cheltenham has been notified for public submissions.

Gull is seeking to demolish all the existing structures at the Tainui Motors site at 68 Vauxhall Rd and establish a 24 hour fully automated service station.

The proposal includes construction of a forecourt with three Gull canopies (totalling six dispensers); installation of two underground tanks including 70,000 litres for petrol and 30,000 litres for diesel; construction of an IT services shed; acoustic fencing; and landscaping.

Public submissions close on February 19.

Tankers will travel along Old Lake Rd, then Vauxhall Rd to service the site. On-street park-

ing outside Tainui Motors will be removed, said a transport report included with the application.

Queuing on fuel promotional days will be accommodated on the site, the report said. The six fuel outlets will be able to service increased demand which could bsee a 300 per cent increase on the 36 fuel transactions per hour expected in normal trading.

While noise effects are expected to be within the range allowed by the Auckland Unitary Plan, mitigation measures will be put in place an acoustic report put to council says. Woman wounded in New World car park shooting Police and ambulances sped to Devonport and taped off a crime scene around a car and bloodied asphalt, after a woman was injured in an airgun shooting in the New World car park.

The drama unfolded around 5pm on Wednesday last week.

Davina Veza of Stanley Point had come out of the supermarket and was loading groceries into her car when she heard three shots.

“The first was like a thud and I thought, ‘God, that’s close.’ I dived into my car.

Veza saw her car windscreen had been hit by what appeared to be a shot from a firearm. She heard the woman call out, “I need help.”

A nurse from Anne St Medical came over to assist and call an ambulance, while Veza called police.

The victim was bleeding badly from an injury above her eye.

She was taken to hospital by ambulance.

A window in the supermarket facade was also hit by a pellet from what police believe to be an airgun.

Veza said she saw several objects on the ground which appeared to be small blue pellets.

Veza didn’t see who had fired the pellets.

An officer at the scene said police would review CCTV footage from supermarket cameras to try to work out what had happened.

At press time, no charges had been laid.

“Luckily, on this occasion, nobody was seriously injured.

But it had the potential to result in serious injuries,” a police spokesperson said.

Airgun victim recovering well The Devonport resident injured in an airgun shooting at Devonport New World felt like a “small rock” had hit her.

Kathy Sykes says she was on her way into the supermarket around 5pm on Wednesday, 16 January when she heard a noise and felt something strike her.

“I felt like a rock had hit me, a small rock. I don’t remember it hurting, but I put my hand up and there was truckloads of blood.”

The object hit her temple, missing her eye by a few centimetres.

She thinks it was one of the pellets found on the ground near the incident.

Sykes called out, “Help, help.” People she knew, from years of living in Devonport, came running.

They laid her down on

a bench outside the supermarket, while they called emergency services.

One young woman contacted her mother who was a nurse at Anne St Medical.

“She [the nurse] was phenomenal,” says Sykes. Others who helped were “wonderful”.

Sykes, speaking to the Flagstaff from Florida on Tuesday, said she felt fine.

She didn’t see who had fired the shots.

By the time she was in the ambulance, she was in good spirits, laughing and joking with the paramedics.

At North Shore Hospital, Sykes had a small hole “glued up”, but there was nothing embedded.

After x-rays, blood tests and a tetanus shot, she was discharged that night.

Sykes says she is a strong person and hasn’t suffered after-effects.

Remarkably she travelled to Florida the following day for a family holiday.

Sykes is especially grateful to the public and supermarket staff who came her aid, as well as ambulance paramedics and police.

Two home invasions were just the tip of the iceberg in a spate of summer-holiday crimes that has some people saying life in Devonport is changing.

A Church St couple say a home invasion left them feeling anxious in the lead-up to Christmas.

“They climbed through one of the windows and th en opened the back door while we were sleeping,” Lucie Feenstra said. “We slept through it and didn’t find out until the morning.”

The home invasion occurred overnight on 15/16 December. The thief stole mobile phones, wallets, a speaker, laptops and other items, including a half-bottle of cider. “It was a horrible feeling to know we were sleeping in the next room as they went through our things. All the internal doors were open, so I was surprised we didn’t wake up.”

The phone was traced to Philomel Cres in Bayswater, where it stayed from 8am to midday, before moving to Waihi, according to Feenstra’s partner, Daniel Chapman.

Police are still investigating.

Feenstra’s advice to others is to lock doors and windows at night and back up all devices.

In another home invasion discussed on social media, a person at home in Domain St during the day heard activity downstairs around 2pm. They were able to chase the intruders away before anything was taken.

Social-media posts reveal thefts from homes, cars and beaches. They include several reports of break-ins to locked boxes on utility vehicles; and a parcel stolen from a deck in Narrow Neck, in early January; and theft from a car of a GPS and chargers before Christmas.

A large amount of mail was stolen from letter boxes in Belmont, Bayswater and Hauraki a couple of weeks before Christmas, much of which was found dumped at a Belmont property. Police said some people came and picked up mail from Takapuna Police Station.

Since the burglary, police have been in contact to say they recovered some of Wyles’ flatmate’s jewellery in a raid in Belmont.

The pair are moving out of the flat, bringing forward a planned move because of the burglary.

DevonportProperty.nz Report — December 2018 2018 – a property year in review One year ago, as 2017 came to a close, the Devonport property market was running along pretty strongly with prices up 16%, and a median sale price of $1,661,000.

Skip forward a year and the median sales price for the last three months of 2018 has fallen 16% to $1,400,000, such has been the correction of property prices in the past year.

The darkening clouds were visible a year ago, as declining sales volumes matched to low inventory looked threatening.

A total of 58 sales in the last three months of 2017 were down 2%.

Compare that to the final three months of 2018 with just 41 sales. Property markets tend to adjust slowly, added to which sales volumes tend to be the lead indicator of future price movements.

Looking back on the 2018 year, a total of 204 properties were transacted in the local Devonport market with a total sales value of $348 million. The

median sales price was $1,517,000.

This volume of sales was the lowest since 2010, and the third-lowest since 1992. The highest recorded sale price was $10 million and the lowest $465,000.

Some other interesting facts from sales in 2018. The most active street for sales was Vauxhall Road with 14, closely followed by Victoria Road with 11. The probably surprising street for

sales was Ewen Alison with 7, whereas Calliope Road only saw 4 sales last year.

The most popular method of sale was auctions with 48 property sales, closely followed by properties selling with a price (47) and by tender (46).

Interestingly, 22 properties were sold without coming onto the market at all. The median number of days between listing and sale was 35, which was three days longer than in 2017.

The new year starts with 51 properties on the market, far more than the 32 this time last year; expect a strong flow of new listings towards the end of January.

Devonport mums tread the boards tackling The Bard

Liz Brown, a mother of four, plays Maria, a servant, in Twelfth Night. Her friend, Marissa Wilson, who has two children, is the Constable of France in Henry V, which plays on alternate nights.

“It’s important to show our children that we continue to pursue our passions and interests,” Brown says.

It has been challenging getting to rehearsals, and fitting in all the other activities, like costume fittings and helping build sets, that people don’t realise go into a production, she says.

However, the pair wanted to role-model to their children making a commitment and following through on it.

The friends know each other through Takarunga Playcentre. Last year they took an acting course at TAPAC (The Auckland Performing Arts Centre) aimed at bringing Shakespeare’s works to life.

Brown, who is passionate about Shakespeare, encouraged Wilson to audition for the Shoreside productions.

It is Wilson’s debut stage performance as an adult, after enjoying acting at high school.

Brown has kept up acting after studying English and drama at Plymouth University, in England, performing recently in Company Theatre’s Calendar Girls, as well as One Man, Two Guvnors and Fawlty Towers.

Brown also encouraged her partner, James Carrick to audition, which he did, successfully.

Carrick started acting three years ago, after previously working as a musician and stand-up comedian.

In 2015, he won an Auckland Community Theatre Trust award for best male lead for his second-ever play, Humble Boy, with Torbay Theatre. He won the same award again in 2017 for his part in Motel, with Phoenix Theatre.

Carrick says it’s easy to underestimate amateur theatre, but the Shoreside Theatre company’s Auckland Shakespeare in the

Brown says her children, who are aged 6 to 16, have already seen the play and loved it.

Henry V is a history play, focused on the build-up to the Battle of Agincourt and Henry’s fight to reclaim the crown in France.

It features famous speeches, such as “Once more, unto the breach, dear friends…”

Love them or loathe them, Lime scooters don’t seem to be going away anytime soon.

Recent near misses or injuries suffered riding them have been a common returning-to-work conversation topic. While much has justifiably been made about the ACC injury costs they are racking up, I’ve been surprised at the enthusiasm shown by Auckland Council for an overseas business getting a free crack at establishing in Auckland using city infrastructure.

On social media there were pictures of councillor Chris Darby scooting to Eden Park and meeting with the head of Lime New Zealand.

The licence for the trial, which has now been extended until March, is just over $5000.

Should council really be offering Lime, an overseas company, free rein on our streets?

They are paying nothing towards footpath maintenance, etc.

Last week in Devonport there were clusters of Lime scooters on corners “cluttering the streets”, as one passer-by described them.

Ironically, one was in a spot that was once the site of sandwich boards – now banned by council – promoting nearby businesses.

So Lime can market its product free of charge on street corners where businesses paying commercial rates to council can’t?

Darby’s boyish enthusiasm for Lime scooters as a revolutionary new transport alternative unfortunately brings out the cynic in me. He has suggested a tax for the scooters but are scooter journeys really cutting down the number of car trips on the roads or are they being utilised by people who would be cycling or walking anyway?

It does though pitch Darby into the 20-somethings’ thought space – a traditional area of low engagement for local body politics and with low voter turnout at election time.

Yes it’s election year. Expect quicker-thanusual responses from councillors and local board members, and a barrage of activity on social media.

Maunga Authority takes over North Head management from DoC The government paid $409,500 to Auckland Council last Friday when Maungauika/ North Head was transferred to the Maunga Authority.

The payment was in recognition of deferred maintenance costs on the mountain.

As part of the deal, DoC will continue to cover maintenance costs on Maungauika for two years to the value of $120,000 and 1500 staff hours per year, under the direction of the Tūpuna Maunga Authority.

Vehicle movements on the mountain will remain the same – with motorists still being able to access the carpark halfway up the mountain.

The road to the top of Maungauika/ North Head has never been open to public vehicles.

New Naval Base Commander Devonport’s new Naval Base Commander brings a strong background in engineering and project management to the role.

Commander Ange Holland’s career spans both naval and private sector experience, and includes serving on ships and inshore support roles with both the Royal Navy and Royal New Zealand Navy.

She is looking forward to the challenges that come with her new role at Devonport.

“I am extremely excited, honoured and privileged to be chosen and given this Command opportunity,” says Commander Holland.

Her career began in the Royal Navy after she graduated from the University of Ulster with an honours degree in Microelectronic systems.

“I knew early on that I wanted to do both engineering and management, and that the Navy would give me a

good grounding in both management and leadership skills,” she says.

After weapons engineering trade training, Commander Holland became one of the first women at sea in the Royal Navy. She immigrated to New Zealand in 1993 and transferred to the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN).

Over the next five years, she undertook a variety of project management and engineering support

roles, before taking a career break and leaving the RNZN in 1998 to work in the commercial sector and raise her twin sons.

She later rejoined the RNZN, carrying out engineering project management and technical support roles, before posting to sea on HMNZS Te Mana as the Weapons Engineering Officer and also serving as Executive Officer during the systems upgrade.

This was followed by several project manager roles and, most recently, taking on the role of Fleet Engineering Future Operation at Devonport Naval Base.

As a solo parent of twin boys, with no family in New Zealand to provide support, Commander Holland understands the difficulties and hardships serving parents often encounter. She hopes to bring an understanding and empathetic approach to the workplace.

Christmas bonanza for Lake Rd traffic cops I was a little bemused to receive in mid-January an infringement notice, aka a speeding fine, from New Zealand Police. The letter was dated 24 December.

The incident took place at 18.12 on Lake Rd Bayswater on Sunday 4 November apparently.

I’m bemused because if I wanted to appeal the fine, which incidentally I can’t be bothered to do, I have to cast my mind back two months.

I can barely remember the details of where I drove last weekend, let alone two months ago

I’m also more than a little curious about when police choose to undertake their surveillance work. According to the notice I received, I was clocked at 61km/h, which clearly is above the speed limit, so I should have been driving more slowly. But physically being able to travel at that speed is a near impossibility on Lake Rd. I’d be willing to bet more than the cost of this fine that there are no cops parked up in daytime hours on Lake Rd, weekdays or weekends. I think this is a cynical revenue-gathering opportunity on the part of the police, and the timing of their presence was carefully planned to net the most money possible from people like myself unused to the freedom of an unobstructed journey along the road we all love to hate. I wonder how many other local residents were caught out by the same speed trap.

It’s all OK for sailing champs at Narrow Neck

Narrow Neck beach will be the centre of two major yachting events next month.

Both the New Zealand OK Dinghy National Championship and the OK Dinghy World Championship will race out of the Wakatere Boating Club in early February.

Nine races are scheduled for the nationals on the weekend of 2 and 3 February. The worlds, held 7-15 February, will feature 10 races – two on each of five racing days.

A 110-strong field has entered the world champs, with about half coming from

New Zealand and a large contingent from Wakatere, which has one of the largest OK fleets in the world.

International entrants include Australians, British, Germans, Americans, and nine from Denmark – where the OK Dinghy class originated.

It is the largest field for an OK world champs outside Europe.

Among the Wakatere entrants, strong showings are expected from Rod Davis, Dan Slater, Ben Morrison and Andy Phillips.

Probert said while the racing would always be competitive, the championships were open, meaning anyone could enter. That led to “a strong emphasis on getting together, sharing a few yarns and just enjoying being out on the water”.

While all 110 boats racing in the world champs will be based at Wakatere, the racing takes place slightly north, along the coast off Takapuna. Probert said this allowed for the course to avoid more of the shipping lane, and there was less tidal pull in that location.

Younger Wakatere yachties, such as Harry Milne and Ryan Harding were also in the field, with boats and entry paid through sponsorship from a Victoria Cruising Club trust.

Probert said the Devonport community had got right behind the event in the planning stages. He encouraged people to come down to Wakatere, which would be open over the two championships.

A good time to see the boats fully rigged and about to leave for the course is between 9.30am and 11.30am. They will return to the club between 4.30 pm and 6pm.

Rugby club regains special-event licences North Shore Rugby Club has been granted a maximum of eight special licences each year – after it lost thousands of dollars in income in 2018 when they were withdrawn.

A liquor-licensing crackdown revealed flaws in the way council had been granting permits to the club.

Since 1993, the club has been licensed from 1 February–31 October, Monday to Friday, and Saturdays and public holidays, 7 pm to 10pm; and 1 November–31 January, Tuesday to Friday, 7 pm to 10pm.

The club had been granted other licences for special occasions over the years, but recent checks by licensing authorities revealed they

appeared to have been given in error.

A regular Seagulls function held before the Takapuna-North Shore local derby, which would often raise $40,000, had to be canned in 2018.

After recent hearings, the DevonportTakapuna Local Board decided to amend the Devonport Domain Reserve Management Plan (1993) to allow both the rugby club and the North Shore Cricket Club to apply for eight special licences each per year.

Other users of Devonport Domain – the Masonic Cricket Club and the new occupant of the former Devonport Bowling Club premises – can apply for four special licences per year.

Legal advice is being sought over money Panuku claims the Devonport Business Association (DBA) owes it in rent on the old council building at 3 Victoria Rd, which was being used as the Devonport Visitor Information Centre.

The DBA received a $30,000 grant from Devonport-Takapuna Local Board to pay for the ground-floor space controlled by Panuku, council’s property arm.

However, a lease arrangement was never agreed between Panuku and the DBA, and the information centre was essentially squatting at the building for more than a year before moving to The Arcade last year.

Panuku has continued to chase the DBA for money it claims to be owed, leaving the

The local board has been growing increasingly upset that council has – in its view – been riding roughshod over long-developed local plans, transferring decision-making up the chain to council committees, officers and departments.

Of particular concern for the board were decisions over properties at 40 Anzac St, Takapuna, and 3 Victoria Rd, Devonport.

Council disagrees and in a report put to the local board at its December meeting said that in Takapuna it was following the Auckland Unitary Plan, which has identified Takapuna as a major growth hub.

The board decided to continue its dispute with council’s governing body, “in an attempt to resolve it in a mutually acceptable manner”.

If a resolution cannot be reached by the time of the local board’s February meeting, the board will lodge a formal dispute with the council.

DBA in a quandary over what to do with the $30,000 set aside.

The DBA approached the local board last month asking it to help sort out the situation.

The board is now seeking legal advice on how to resolve the matter without putting the business association at risk of any legal action.

It also wants clarification on whether the return of the $30,000 grant absolves the DBA of any legal or contractural oligations to Panuku.

International ensemble keeping it local at Folk in the Park

Devonport music fans will be the first to hear new music from local band Shore Collective when they perform at Folk in the Park next month.

The band released its debut album Early Morning Rain late last year.

“We’ve got a lot of support from the community,” says lead singer Hamish McGhie.

“I love the village and the fact that Devonport is an artist community.”

The band wants to keep things local. The album cover is a work by Devonport artist Christian Nicholson, which was purchased through Art by the Sea. And it only seemed right that local people be the first to hear the band’s new music.

The six members of Shore Collective have a strong connection with Devonport, through both their music and personal lives.

“We met through Takarunga Playcentre as we all have kids the same age,” explains singer-songwriter McGhie, who founded the band.

Originally from Hawke’s Bay, he began writing songs while he was student living in London. Later, he and his West Auckland/ Rarotongan wife Kath found success in a folk trio.

“Kath and I both worked at the Science Museum. We did the basement-bar circuit in London and people from the Science Museum would come en masse to support us,” he says.

The couple made the move to Devonport in 2009.

In 2012, the Shore Collective came together with the addition of fellow Devonport residents Thor Besier (harmonica/vocals/guitar), English-born Hannah Jemmett (cello), Guatemalan-born vocalist Raul Castaneda Galimidi and German-born Michael Witt (Drums/cajon/ percussion).

McGhie confesses that he thought Devonport would be a challenging place to thrive as a musician, but has found the opposite to be the case. “We’ve packed out The Bunker with over 100 people, and that’s just friends and supportive locals.”

The band is excited to perform for the first time at Folk in the Park.

In 2018, the event’s musical acts attracted a crowd of several hundred to Windsor Reserve.

This year is Folk in the Park’s 12th anniversary. “People look forward to it every year,” says event organiser Hilary Condon. “Lots of local neighbours come down, people from overseas travel over on the ferry and we just have a nice little afternoon.”• Folk in the Park, Windsor Reserve, Sunday 17 February, 1-4pm

Coastal Classic

Great design demands a keen eye for detail coupled with flawless finishing – both of which were provided by kitchen designer Shane George, from Takapunabased Kitchens By Design, in this beautiful beachside home at Scotts Landing.

A successful design also relies on collaboration and a shared vision of everyone involved, says Shane.

“When Mary [the homeowner] and her interior designer walked into our showroom in Newmarket, we immediately clicked and she was soon on board with all of the materials and finishes I showed her. She particularly liked the leathered finish of the Titanium Granite benchtop of the contemporary kitchen we have on show – and that’s exactly what we ended up using for the benchtop of her new kitchen.”

The basic shape and position of the kitchen in the house had already been drawn up on the architect’s plans, but Mary was keen to bring on the services of a specialist kitchen design team to expand on these initial concepts and to work on the design details and the material palette.

“She didn’t just want a white kitchen,” says Shane. “It had to gel with the rest of the home in terms of its earthy tones and tactile finishes, so, together with the granite benchtop, I suggested a warm taupe-grey for the cabinetry, together with an aged-bronze metallic finish above the central cooktop.”

From the outset, the designer says he was very mindful and respectful of the architecture, particularly the form of the vaulted, open-plan living space.

“Directly below the apex of the ceiling, I lined up the tap and sink on the island and also the cooktop on the back wall. I then continued the symmetry by flanking the central cooking bench with the fridge on one side and the wall ovens on the other, and gave the cabinetry a regular rhythm across the width of the room.”

To enhance the functionality of the new kitchen, Shane designed a built-in ‘entertainment area, hidden by bifold doors, as an extension to the back wall of cabinetry.

This clever addition contains a small sink, benchtop, glass storage, and under-bench drinks fridge. He also included a small study nook at the far end of the space.

The signature design element in the kitchen is the large, multifunction island that doubles as a casual seating area or dining option for up to six people. The distinctive I-beam design was an extension of an idea first mooted by the

architects, who also specified the rustic, wideplanked oak floor that grounds the whole space.

Shane says that his client also took the opportunity to work with Kitchen By Design’s team of independent fabricators and craftspeople, with whom they have built trusted relationships over many years. “They are the best in the industry, and that certainly shines through in the quality of finishings in

the completed kitchen,” he says.

“I deliberately didn’t want this kitchen to shout too loud in the space – it just needed to sit there and look understated, but at the same time feel earthy and timeless,” says Shane. “It really is a stunning location, right on the beach at Scotts Landing, and I feel my design fits well within this modern, sophisticated home by one of the country’s top architects.

Delightful gem from Devonport Chamber Orchestra At its final concert for the year in December, the Devonport Chamber Orchestra gave us another very enjoyable afternoon of highquality music, including a delightful concerto from a virtually unknown composer.

The programme, conducted with precision

by Warwick Robinson, and ably led by Joseph Chen and Brecon Carter, opened with Mozart’s Symphony No. 36 (The Linz).

During a visit to Linz, in Austria, Mozart was asked to give a concert. But, as he hadn’t brought any symphonies with him, he wrote, rehearsed and performed a new one in just days!

It’s an impressive and expansive work, and from the portentous slow introduction through to the exhilaratingly fast last movement, the orchestra played with confidence and assurance. Crisp articulation from the string section was matched by lovely ensemble work from the woodwind, brass and timpani.

This symphony was followed by a concerto for two violas and orchestra by the little-known Moravian composer, Antonin Wranitzky.

In 18th-century Vienna, Wranitzky was an influential teacher and virtuoso violinist. He was also friends with Haydn and Beethoven, and highly regarded by them as a composer.

Cameron Stanley and Emily Bouwhuis, viola soloists in the concerto, have played together as violinists for around 10 years, and

their rapport and pleasure in music-making was evident throughout. They virtually danced the music and through much of the concerto were “all smiles”, as were the audience and orchestra. Their performance was a delight from start to finish and they made seem effortless what was clearly virtuosic music.

Both Stanley and Bouwhuis have been mentored by Mary O’Brien, and Bouwhuis also studied with Brecon Carter. So, it was fitting that both O’Brien and Carter were playing in the orchestra.

For an encore, Stanley switched to violin and the pair rounded off the afternoon with a Mozart duo for violin and viola.

As Bouwhuis had only returned from Australia a few days earlier, they had had little time to prepare the encore, but that was not evident in their performance. As in the concerto, they exuded enjoyment, enthusiasm and delight, and carried it off with panache.

This was a fitting end to what has been a year of six excellent concerts from the Devonport Chamber Orchestra. Bring on 2019! By Joanna Booth

Local identities recognised in New Year Honours Former national Plunket president AndréeTalbot, wine-industry identity Bob Campbell and veteran local politician Jan O’Connor were recognised in the 2019 New Year Honours List.

Andrée Talbot – Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) For services to the Plunket Society Talbot has been involved with Plunket in governance roles since the late 1990s, serving as national president from 2014 to 2017.

She joined the Devonport sub-branch in 1996 and soon became president, leading a major project for new Plunket rooms for Devonport.

She was elected president of the Waitemata Area committee in 2004, then joined the Plunket New Zealand Council. She was elected to the national board in 2007 and as national president from 2014 she oversaw Plunket’s move towards consolidating nationally into a charitable trust.

As chair of the national board, she oversaw commencement of the transition in 2017. Plunket successfully transitioned to a charitable trust beginning 1 January 2018.

Bob Campbell – Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) For services to the wine industry Campbell has been one of the most recognised individuals in the New Zealand wine industry for the past 45 years.

He was part of Montana Wines, which initiated the development of the Marlborough wine region in the early 1970s. He has become New Zealand’s pre-eminent wine judge, and was only the second New Zealander to achieve the prestigious Master of Wine designation. He founded a wine school in 1990 and is widely regarded as New Zealand’s foremost wine educator. He contributes to major wine and food publications.

In 2009, Campbell was the inaugural recipient of the Sir George Fistonich medal for his services to wine. In 2013, he was inducted into the New Zealand Wine Hall of Fame.

Jan O’Connor – Queen’s Service Medal (QSM) For services to local government and the community O’Connor was a councillor from 1986 to 1992 of the Takapuna City Council, which amalgamated into the North Shore City Council in 1989, and was a North Shore City Councillor from 2007 to 2010.

She was a three-term member of the former Takapuna Community Board and is currently a second-term member of the DevonportTakapuna Local Board.

O’Connor has been a strong advocate for public transport and the preservation of public open spaces. She has had a long involvement with performing arts and other community organisations, and has been patron of the Takapuna Tennis Club since 2011.

Basket case: lazy shoppers make off with New World gear Self-Esteem? It’s not something we can give. There’s really only one way to teach kids how to develop it. Give kids something they can’t do, teach them to work hard until they can do it, and keep repeating the process.

When we send kids to sports, for most parents like me, the indirect learning of perseverance, value of hard work, body confidence, sportsmanship and ability to deal with adversity is far more important than the intricacies of a sport.

The voice of one great coach can be a lifetime feedback loop as an adult. I personally was dragged kicking and screaming into martial arts as a naturally wimpy teen, with apparently no sports gene, and definitely no desire to heave and sweat next to biologically superior beings. Even in my 40s, l can still throw a cracking combo from the great fundamentals l learned over 20 years ago.

The tough sessions made me a fighter on and off the bag.

Our boxing classes are ‘old school’, a non-coddling zone. Do we work the kids hard? Absolutely. Is boxing tough? YES. Our coaches teach self-defence fundamentals, physical strength and conditioning. We are strictly NON-CONTACT, using bags, mitts and training equipment to increase footwork, coordination, speed, power and, of course, self-esteem.

the checkouts from 1 August, 2018. The store’s shopping baskets numbers dropped from more than 100 to a low of around 30 a month or two later, according to online shopping manager Madhur Chemburkar.

It is an ongoing problem, with the supermarket needing to order more baskets.

The latest development is people taking trolleys, Chemburkar says.

Two carts turned up near the ferry terminal, and last week a customer returned two trolleys they had found, full of rubbish, in an alley off Victoria Rd. A delivery van has picked up trolleys from further afield around Devonport.

This is despite there being banana, apple and wine boxes lining the wall near the checkouts for people to use, Chemburkar says.

Meanwhile, Devonport New World is continuing its efforts to reduce plastic use.

“It is a story in progress. We are trying to cut down as much as possible.”

Most recently, the store stopped wrapping cut cauliflowers and cabbages in plastic, and it has told a supplier to stop wrapping limes in plastic.

The next change will be introducing biodegradable containers for use in the delicatessen section.

• Oscar’s Bar and Cafe is forced to change its name after the Academy of Motion Pictures threatens legal action. Owned by Devonport 3 Cinemas, it is renamed Bar 3.

• After surviving a sinking at Birkenhead wharf almost a year earlier, historic ferry the Toroa is berthed at Stanley Bay Wharf again. A community preservation society is committed to restoring the ferry, which served Devonport from 1925 to 1981.

• A classified ad sees a kind, financially secure professional man in his 50s seek a slim/attractive, somewhat younger, professional. woman. She can drop him a line via his post office box.

• The Department of Conservation calls for expressions of interest for commercial operators to work out of military buildings on North Head. The Friends of North Head would like to see “surplus, ramshackle buildings” removed, along with a security fence around the summit, so people can roam freely around the beautiful spot.

• Plans to develop part of Ngataringa Park as a sports field are set for North Shore City Council funding. The proposed area abuts North Shore United’s Allen Hill stadium, but there are no plans to develop the land for senior soccer. The land would fill a gap for junior players.

• The Depot Artspace hosts Devonport’s own Hero Festival.

Anna hits top form with bat and ball Local cricketer Anna Browning (15) led the Auckland under-15 girls side to a third national tournament win in a row earlier this month.

Anna, who captained the team, achieved 172 runs with an average of 57. She also took 14 wickets and six catches, three runouts and was named the tournament’s most valuable player. The title came as no surprise to the team as they had won all of their five games going into the final round against Christchurch. “The games weren’t that tense but they were still very good,” says Anna, who went straight from theunder-15tournament in Wanganui to compete in the national under-18 tournament in Wellington.

While Anna found the older age-group tournament a lot more challenging, her team still won all five of their completed games (with one game rained off). “The under-18s are harder to score quicker but it’s a lot better for me to develop faster,” says Anna who, after nine games in a row, was exhausted.

At only 15, Anna has made it into the Takapuna Premiers team as one of the youngest members. She will play alongside former coaches and current Auckland Hearts players Lauren Down and Arlene Kelly.

“My goal would be to make the Auckland Top performer… Michelle Cox from New Zealand Cricket presents Anna Hearts team or even the White Ferns.”
