Ferry crash injures passengers

An eyewitness said: “The next minute someone came tumbling down the stairs, the seats went flying, people were falling over.”

The woman conforted the injured tourist and her husband who had stumbled inside from the front of the boat.

The injured tourist was bleeding profusely and the woman was using anything to hand to stop the flow.

“She was conscious but was in shock.”

Fullers staff had quickly come around the boat to assess who was injured.

“The Captain was absolutely distraught – I felt like giving him a hug,” the woman said.

It appeared the crash was caused by some sort of computer or mechanical failure that the Captain had no Comforted…injured Devonport resident control off.

O’Brien said she thought the badly injured woman stood up and it was at that moment she was struck by the concrete.

Police, ambulance and fire crews rushed to the scene.

Locally produced cookbook wins international honour

Devonport cooks and authors Rebecca Woolfall and Suzi Tait-Bradly have won a prestigious international award for a children’s cookbook published last year.

Piggy Pasta and more – Food with Attitude won the best children’s book in the New Zealand section of the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards.

The book now goes into the world finals against entries from 160 countries, with winners announced in June.

Woolfall and Tait-Bradly, who three years ago launched the business Little Cooks – aimed

at getting kids cooking healthy food - are delighted.

Woolfall said: “I thought this is the competition Jamie Oliver wins - so it’s pretty major for us to be recognised.”

The book has already created waves, featuring in the New Zealand Listener’s best books list for 2014, and the pair appeared on Campbell Live when the book launched.

The book contains numerous fun recipes.

The front-cover dish, piggy pasta, for example, is coloured pink by beetroot.

But there is a serious side. Tait-Bradly says

New Zealand’s child obesity problem is growing and exacerbated by the availability of fast food for kids. Many mothers are now working mums and cooking skills aren’t easily passed down to the next generation. If kids can learn to cook healthy options it must help reverse the tide, she says.

The Little Cooks approach is gaining traction. In addition to its cooking class at the Calliope Sea Scouts Hall, it has classes at Diocesan and at the middle and junior schools at Kristen.

Woolfall and Tait-Bradly hope to grow the concept across the country.

Devonport trademark registered in Cambodia

A team of young Devonport tradies who helped build a house in Cambodia have left a momento of their home town on the building.

Rather then a traditional Asian OE Todd Evans, Joel Collins, Ben Blucher and Adrien Fleury decided as part of the trip to put their skills to good use and build a house for needy local people.

They met up with another ex-TGS friend Kym Harper, who helped on the project as well.

Working with Volunteer Build Cambodia construction in Aranh Village, near Siem Reap, started on January 12.

The lads stayed in a guest house in Siem Reap and were transported by truck to the site each day. They worked with a local builder and an Australian volunteer who lives in Cambodia full time.

The house was built for two brothers – Po (18) and Per (15).

When Per was seven he was involved in an accident and suffered brain damage. The boys were abandoned by the parents (as brain damage is considered a substaintial burden) and it was left to Po to fend for them both. The Devonport tradesmen leave their mark in Cambodia Per is home-bound and Po works all day and studies in the morning to support them.

The tradies experienced this first hand the brothers’ lives and also changed ours. We With poor sanitation standards and a lack of safe drinking water in rural areas there - with all of them being violently ill at one will never forget this experience.”

The lads are now heading to Laos to conis a high death rate, particularly amongst point or another.

So with a little extra money they were able tinue their Asian OE. children. to build not only the traditional Khmer-style stilted house for the brothers, but also a water well and an outdoor toilet.

Once the project was complete on January 22, a ceremony and blessing by local monks took place.

Evans said on Instagram: “It was full of joy and laughter and also tears of happiness.”

The boys didn’t forget they came from St. Paul’s Church Devonport. As a permanent reminder they Victoria Road carved a board and attached it to the roof beam. It depicts an outline of Rangitoto with ‘DEVO’ and ‘NZ’ and the date of the build inscribed onto it.

Fundraising events were held prior to the trip and the boys thanked the Devonport community for their donations.

Dob in your mountain-biking neighbour Off-road mountain biking on Mt Victoria has been banned.

But the mountain will not be patrolled for abusers – instead locals are being asked to dob in any mountain bikers who break the new rules.

The new joint Auckland Council/Maori authority that now controls the volcanic cone has canned the practice without any local consultation, despite a history of community debate on the issue.

Signs went up next to the mushrooms on the mountain peak late last month stating that offroad biking was no longer allowed.

Mike George, Corporate Communications Specialist for the Tūpuna Maunga o Tāmaki Makaurau Authority that is co-governing Auckland’s volcanic cones, says the ban came after complaints.

“Several communications were received from members of the public commenting on off-road mountain biking on Takarunga/Mount Victoria and the damage it is causing.”

George said the authoritiy did not need to consult the public on the ban. “Preventing damage to the maunga by discouraging off-track biking falls under routine management of the maunga,” he says.

Protection of the ancestral mountain’s significant spiritual, cultural, historical and natural values was paramount, he said “Some activities cause significant adverse effects on these taonga and one example on Takarunga/Mt Victoria is off-road tracks that have been made by individuals through the

urupā (cemetery) and the damage that these tracks have been causing to graves. The safety to pedestrians using walking tracks has also been taken into consideration,” he says.

George clarified that “biking is absolutely permitted on paved areas on Takarunga/Mt Victoria.” In reality the only paved area on Mt Vic is the main road to the summit, which is tar-sealed.

The contentious issue of mountain bikers on Mt Vic has been under discussion in Devonport for years. Primarily at meetings of the now disestablished Devonport Community Board, in newspaper articles and in many letters to the Flagstaff.

Until now the focus of the debate has been on negotiating ways for pedestrians and bikers to coexist. While outright bans were on the table several times, they were never activated.

This time, the decision to ban off-road cycling was made only with the input of those who complained about the bikers.

George says that since the sign went up, “council officers have received several communications from members of the public in support of the sign.”

However it seems the signs are largely educational. George says no fines will be issued to bikers who breach the rules.

Devonport-Takapuna Local Board chair Mike Cohen said he was disappointed that the ban had not gone through a proper process.

“With Mt Vic closed to them, local mountain bikers now have to travel all the way to Woodhill,” he said.

North Shore City Council threatened to ban off-road cycling on Mount Vic several times over the past 10 years.

In 2004, it considered restricting off-road biking after one man repeatedly complained about a group of four local women bikers who called themselves Team Doris.

In 2009, complaints from walkers were again discussed at a Devonport Community Board public meeting. The then council parks officer Stuart Cameron-Lee said signs banning mountain bikers would have to go up if his “softlysoftly” approach of patrolling the mountain and reminding cyclists of their responsibilities did not work

Cameron-Lee said he was measuring the concern and damage caused by both bikers and walkers. He wanted to change cyclists’ behaviour, he said. The community board agreed to look for an amicable compromise and stated that it was loath to enforce a by-law banning off-road biking on Mount Vic. Four years ago, the issue arose again and council consulted an expert on the extent of the damage done to the mountain by cyclists. This did not result in a ban.

North Shore City Council did not have a policy on mountain bike use but Auckland City Council had stringent guidelines. Mountain biking on Mt Eden was banned.

Locals quiet on legal-high policy Only 12 submissions were made by residents in the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board area on Auckland Council’s proposed legislative changes to the sale of legal highs. Aucklandwide, Council received 1,454 submissions on the new draft policy.

Last November, the Flagstaff reported that the proposed Local Approved Products Policy drafted in accordance with the Psychoactive Substances Amendment Act 2014 leaves Devonport village, the 27 Lake Road commer-

cial area and Hauraki Corner as locations where future legal drugs can be sold.

A month later, Devonport-Takapuna Local Board took a stand on the issue.

Members said they were asking Council to extend the ban of drugs being sold from within 200m to 500m of local schools, effectively eradicating them from Devonport village.

Devonport led the country in the fight against Kronic in 2011.

Gold galore for Harry Waine at Auckland track cycling champs Harry Waine won four of the five of the races he competed in at the 2015 Auckland Track Cycling Championships.

The Takapuna Grammar School (TGS) Year 12 student won gold medals for the Under-17 200m sprint, the 500m time trial, the 5km scratch race and the points race. In the last race of the four-day event – the 2km individual pursuit – he came second.

Harry says he enjoyed the event.

“It was good fun! I set a new PB of 35.6 seconds in the 500 time trial that was better than my time on the wooden track, which is usually much faster, so I was pretty happy with that,” he says.

The champs qualified Harry as the topseeded rider in the Auckland track squad that is heading to the nationals in Cambridge from March 11-15.

This is the second year on the track for Harry. He competed at the national champs in Invercargill in the Under-17 division as a 14-year-old. “Mostly I just wanted to get a feel for it. Every race was really hard and my best result was 9th. This year, my goal is to Fast track to victory… Harry Waine in action at the Auckland track cycling champs win the points race,” he says.

Harry’s main focus is road cycling and he is part of the Cycling New Zealand Under-17 development squad. “I do all my training on the road pretty much, which is good for endurance on the track as well,” he says.

“But what I like about track is that it’s fast, that the races are short and it all happens quickly. It is also more interesting for spectators.”

One of those spectators is Harry’s proud father Tony Waine, who said: “Harry’s done damn fine and he has worked hard at it. He just loves it.”

Track cycling in Auckland can be challenging. The outdoor Manukau Velodrome was built for the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games. It has a 285-metre-long oval track with a 42-degree banked concrete track.

Track cycling events there are highly weather dependent, as the track is unusable when wet.

Newer indoor Olympic size 250m and wooden velodromes are located in Cambridge and Invercargill.

Other top TGS performers at the track cycling championship were: • A i d a n N i c h o l a s w o n s i l v e r i n the U19 sprint and bronze in the U19 individual pursuit and Keirin races.

• Oscar Elworthy won silver in the U17 points race.

Sound demand for recording space at Depot DepotSound, the Depot Artspace music studio, is expanding due to popular demand.

Studio manager Dave Rhodes said it has bookings from January until the end of April.

“I hate turning people away and at this point, we have enough work for two studios,” he says.

The studio will close its doors for three weeks in March to demolish part of an office and storeroom to set up a new and larger control room and convert the old control room into a second recording studio.

The back end of the Clarence St building will be reshuffled, says Rhodes. “Currently we have to squeeze to get three people into our old control room and when you work with a five-piece band, you need space for about ten, including the engineer, producer and assistant,” he says.

In the future Rhodes wants to add a freelance engineer to help with recording work.

He also plans to offer recording courses and workshops.

Concern over library’s cedar exterior durablity its beauty alone represents a mindset that does not take into account the limited resources of a ratepayer-funded council; it ignores the fact that a building should be holding up (OK, and still look good) after a century; and that any investment should offer proportional practical gain over the previously available resource.

The new library ticks none of these boxes.

The cedar exterior must be the biggest blunder: after 10 years in salty sea spray and wind we will face treatment and structural replacement costs, and not before soon the 2015 building will be declared “unfit for its purpose”, just as Council did with the predecessor. You don’t need to

A certain prominent young author has recently accused our politicians of being shallow and short-sighted. Might this not be just representing the vocal majority of the electorate itself? The local buzz around the new library is all about its aesthetic merits and how many more youngsters will take up reading because of this cool new building. For my taste, that’s too much of judging a book by its cover alone.

Why do you need a flash dispensary of books and other media to enjoy literature? Most of my reading as a kid was conducted with a battery lamp under the duvet after lights out. Secondly, judging the merits of a public building based on

McHugh a welcoming face in Devonport When we arrived from the UK just over 13 years ago, our first full day in New Zealand was spent visiting Devonport.

A highlight of the day was lunch at John McHugh’s Waterfront restaurant on King Edward Parade (now Platters). The welcoming staff seated us in a sunny courtyard and we feasted on gurnard and chips. Afterwards the children stripped down to their undies for an impromptu dip in Duder’s Bay over the road.

You could say it gave us a taste for the place and we were quick to make Devonport our new home.

Family birthdays were subsequently celebrated with the legendary Waterfront ‘eatas-much-as-you-can’ Sunday brunches and lucky visiting relatives dined at McHugh’s of Cheltenham, I got to know John McHugh and liked him a lot. He was a successful businessman who held Devonport close to his heart and did much to promote and protect its uniqueness.

One year I remember lining up nervously at the start of the Auckland Marathon, of which John and his partner Jonathan Raos had a grandstand view from their Hampton Beach home. They shouted encouragement to me and it made me feel great. I wasn’t a nameless participant, I was part of the Devonport community and had supporters.

be a proclaimed expert of the matter; a causal stroll along the Devonport waterfront offers sufficient examples of warped cedar shingles falling off roofs and 1980s’ cladding requiring constant attention. This might be alright for the private homebuyer with a knack for handywork, but the choice of material hardly qualifies as a far-sighted decision by the designers of a public building.

Upgrading the existing building would have been the fiscally, environmentally, historically and culturally responsible choice. This option was never put to the community, let alone the more basic question of whether we will need a dedicated library building in the future. Consultation was limited to the question of location, and apparently some obscure committee was asked to comment on some functional features. How this qualifies as due process for a capital funding decision over $8m, sourced entirely from debt, is beyond my understanding of “profound” and “far-sighted”, as the literary luminary Ms Catton might call it.

Library signage queried With the opening of our new library, which incidentally I do like, why is it that on the main signage on the western face identifying the building the portion written in our second language the largest by far, over that in our first language (English) so much smaller?

The RNZN (Navy) can this get this correct on their main entrance on Queen’s Parade.

Fine tuning needed to enhance library The new library building is gorgeous, fitting well into the treed surroundings, drawing readers inside and silencing critics who deemed it an unnecessary extravagance (including me).

The contents however are a different matter. Fiction reigns, filling the main two-storey space.

The non-fiction section is relegated to the smaller upstairs rear and side of the building, although this is a quieter location away from the noise around the main desk downstairs.

Unfortunately the collection is severely depleted from what it was, gutted of variety, information and knowledge. The marine section in which I am interested has been reduced from several rows of useful books, to a mere six on the shelf today, which can eventually be found if you search along the unlabelled rows of shelving and crawl on the floor. The magazine section is likewise sparse. For example there are just four issues of New Scientist, a smattering of issues from 2013 and 2014, with no recent or current ones. Formerly there was a goodly stack of each magazine to browse

through; where did the rest go?

On my visit today there were seven people sitting downstairs (excluding the children’s section), none with books, either talking or fiddling with their smartphones, while upstairs were 15 people searching the non-fiction shelves or sitting reading, so clearly there is a thriving demand for non-fiction services. The bleak reading and meeting room in a prime location at the south end of the building has fewer seats, no books or magazines, barren painted walls with a cold bluish-white colour, and was occupied by three teenage girls talking and texting.

Suggested improvements are to please put subject labels and Dewey classifications on each end of the non-fiction rows of shelving; move the magazines downstairs to the southern reading room where they conveniently used to be; and put more comfy seats (not bean bags), a warmer wall colour, and local art in the southern reading room to make it brighter and more habitable.

Has the library set the precedent for modernism?

The new library has various airy open interconnecting spaces, with wonderful light and view shafts into the local environment. The internal proportions are appropriate, albeit that the bulk and location seem extreme on the outside. There is a sense of discovery as one moves through the structure that creates curiosity and interest; the glass sculptural element suspended near the entry to my eye is a good artwork. It’s early days, however people are quietly filling the various rooms, the kids terraces, the porthole window, the quiet spaces of contemplation, a meeting room, lounging, reading, selecting, and a few people are online. One has to say the place feels quite ethereal. The building works from that perspective. I have to admit, it is a success in those terms. If Len Brown is going to squander millions, Devonport may as well have a piece of the action, because we are paying for the lavish taste of our council in our rates regardless.

Fortunately the building stands in a treed environment away from the hundred-year-old streetscape. The design does defy heritage policies and the utterances of some intellectuals that govern the consenting processes, so clearly from here on, anything will go in Devonport architecturally? Modernism can be planted into the centre of the historic village without too much further a do. I actually abide the view that change is good in some regards, however the character of Devonport, as we are led to expect, is clearly now in a changed state.

This building saw Devonport’s carbon footprint stomp on the atmosphere in the process of dumping a perfectly redeemable structure that could have been modified. The cladding of the building with some of America’s finest forest trees, is at best questionable in these modern times. Personally I love cedar, however I am perplexed that innovative architects did not come up with some fresh New Zealand-sourced

new-age sensitive cladding alternatives, that would clearly be more appropriate. Even using Macrocarpa or New Zealand-grown renewable gum trees might have demonstrated respect for our conservation values and other people’s faroff environments.

Architecturally I feel the new building lacks integrity also, from the perspective that the original concept was more crisp and had strong horizontal and vertical elements. One wonders if the engineering constraints were not accounted for in the design process. The front entry opens onto a cheap hotmix with an iron manhole. The main entry has a Maori carving obstructing the aperture, which is suspended on an ugly steel frame overhead, the artwork appears to be poorly placed and should be higher to clear the door, or the door should be lower; it looks like an afterthought Then one is drawn to question the relevance of the Maori signage that dominates as well as the reason the carving is placed as such in the dominant position of the building. It would have looked better placed at eye level, perhaps to cover the glass window that looks into structures oddly enough to the right side of the entry. One thing is certain: the forethought as to cleaning leaves up and washing windows or keeping cobwebs out of the louvres and complex arrangements has been totally omitted. Some don’t like weedkillers here, however it will take a strong pesticide to nuke those spiders. It’s a good job I’m not on window cleaning either as I’d be hard pressed to get in between the glass and the louvres. You will however see me enjoying my share of the library, although I am disappointed by our city governors inability to recognise the things I see as relevant in the delivery of public assets. Overall I’m erring on saying the project is a failure, as unpalatable as that sounds – even to my ears.

Working with young and old

Andree Talbot is a Plunket stalwart. After 19 years volunteering for the organisation, she was elected as Plunket President last year.

She remembers coming along to her younger siblings’ Plunket check-ups in the late 1960s, held innumerable coffee groups in her home in the 1990s and found the local Devonport branch a new home in 2000. Talbot spoke to Maire Vieth.

Andree Talbot works at both ends of the age spectrum. By day the newly elected Plunket president works as a solicitor specialising in older clients.

“I don’t know why it has happened but it’s what I find challenging and satisfying,” she says.

“I am often called to North Shore Hospital to talk to quite ill people or have to assist families where something really unfortunate has happened. There is a real parallel to Plunket as both fulfil a need in me to be useful to provide care with the appropriate skill,” she says.

Talbot grew up in Devonport as the oldest of three and moved back here as an adult. “It’s where I feel I belong,” she says.

Her parents moved into a flat on Empire Road when she was just under six months old. Lois, a speech therapist, and Frank, who ran a garage in Albany, then bought a house on Summer St and another on Aramoana Ave. “I went to Stanley Bay School for two years before transferring to Bayswater Primary, then Belmont Intermediate and Takapuna Grammar,” she says.

Talbot remembers visiting the Plunket rooms at Devonport Library with her mother and both of her younger siblings. In 1995,

Inspired by infants and the elderly… Andree Talbot when her own daughter was born, Talbot returned to those rooms for Evie’s check-ups.

“I first got hooked into Plunket at a coffee group. And I say hooked because I was only four days out of hospital and surprised to be contacted so soon, but it became my first network in Devonport, meeting mums, comparing nightmares and having a bit of a laugh. I just found that wonderful,” she says.

Until then, Talbot had been working as a lawyer for a commercial property firm in Auckland CBD. “My day-to-day connections were in town. I came home late and on weekends I did what you do when you don’t have children. So it was a shock to be at home with a new baby, the husband at work, no parents around and not knowing where and who anybody is,” she says.

Plunket’s family centre in Takapuna was supportive when Evie had trouble feeding. “I was sleep-deprived and not doing very well and ended up spending the afternoon there.

The lactation specialist got me a cup of tea, made me a meal and took baby off me. It was nice to hear that I was entitled to feel a little overwhelmed,” she says.

Eight months later, Talbot joined Devonport’s Plunket committee. “It kept my brain going, giving me opportunities to think and process, be strategic and useful and do something practical,” she says. She helped fundraise for nurses’ equipment and operating expenses and eventually found the clinic

When the North Shore Women’s Bowling Club closed the doors of its Wairoa Rd clubroom in 2000, a Plunket volunteer read about it in the Flagstaff and spotted an opportunity.

Plunket lobbied the Devonport Community Board to rezone the council land from recreation to communal use and bought the building for just under $10,000, says Talbot.

“Then I worked with the periodic detention people to get the building modified,” she says.

Plunket has grown her world.

“It’s a kind of lifting of your eyeline. When you are a new mum, you move in a world where your baby is the centre. If you get involved in Plunket, you move to a slightly higher level and start thinking about all the other babies in your community and of a similar world experience,” Talbot says.

“When I became president of Plunket’s Takapuna branch, which looked after Devonport, Takapuna, Milford and Sunnynook, I was going to meetings the next level up, where we compared ideas and contrasted issues in different spots on the North Shore,” she says.

When Auckland’s northern and western area merged into one – the Waitemata District – Talbot’s horizons grew again. “The area was huge and hugely diverse, reaching from Devonport to Ranui, Henderson to the West Coast beaches. In Devonport, you don’t often look at how to best provide service for a

family living in a garage, on a campsite or in a car. Seeing that was really challenging and emotional. I found it so anyway. But I learned a hell of a lot,” she says.

But even in a prosperous area like Devonport Plunket often finds hidden needs, says Talbot.

New immigrants are often without a network and hugely appreciate the coffee groups, she says. “A surprising number look wealthy but are not. I have had quiete a few requests for free child seats from families that are new to Devonport. There is also a real need, often hidden behind some wealthy doors, when relationships are not in great shape,” she says.

And we have diversity as well, Talbot says, citing the Navy, State housing and unemployment. “But that is not to underestimate that Devonport is, in fact, a very privileged and wealthy neighbourhood,” she adds.

Sometimes unpopular decisions still need to be made in an area like Devonport. Recently cutbacks have meant Devonport parents must travel to Constellation Drive for baby car seats.

In 2007, Talbot became one of the five elected volunteer members on Plunket’s board and was elected president in November 2014.

“As you move up, you broaden and broaden.

So now as a president, as far as I’m concerned, my responsibility is to find the best support for everyone’s babies, but it all comes from that first base instinct of looking after your own,” she says.

Plunket, was established 107 years ago in Dunedin by Dr Truby King, who wanted to improve the health of local children. These days it is the largest provider of Well Child services in the country, which delivers health and developmental check-ups at local clinics nationwide to over 54,000 babies, serving 91% of New Zealand’s babies, Talbot says.

There is also a 24-hour Plunket helpline, regional Family Centres and car seat rental schemes, plus the monthly coffee groups

run by volunteers. “We have free parenting education, toy libraries, walking and cycling groups, all sorts of things around the country,” says Talbot.

After 12 years as a stay-at-home mum, Talbot went back to work part time as a solicitor in 2007. “In my pre-child days I had worked for a major firm in the city, dealing with big corporations, buying and selling corporate properties, multi-storey buildings, factories and businesses,” she says. At Simpson Western in Takapuna, Talbot at first picked up where she had left off, but after the Global Financial Crisis she drifted towards elder law, working on legal issues concerning older people. “I started off working on wills and powers of attorney, then on family trusts, transitioning into a retirement village and things like that,” she says.

About her spare time she says: “There isn’t a lot of it, but what there is I spend with my kids. That has always been a major thing for me because I have been home with them for so long, and I still have to drive them everywhere because neither of them have licences.”

Evie, at 19, is studying medicine in Auckland.

Frank is in his last year at TGS, leads the school’s concert band on clarinet and plays saxophone in the jazz band. “We go to lots of performances,” Talbot says.

Apart from that she used to knit but no longer has time and loves to walk but would like to do more. She also used to travel.

After graduating from law school, she married Brett Talbot and moved to London for five years and worked in investment banking. “Not quite John Key stuff, more back-office stuff but still very interesting,” she says.

The Talbots bought and sold a house in Kent. “It helped us to get into the Devonport property market and we could travel for five months on the way there. We cruised the Nile and walked in the Annapurna Ranges in Nepal, went through Russia and Scandinavia

and to Berlin through Checkpoint Charlie.

It was incredibly intense and intimidating.

Two months later we were in a bookshop in Agra after visiting the Taj Mahal and there was TV coverage of the wall coming down.

We couldn’t believe it,” she says. One of her missions is to go back and see the world again on more than £20 a day.

But for now it’s Devonport. “People often say to me what an amazing community Devonport is. I get quite passionate about the fact that we look after our own community and that people tend to get involved. I do occasionally wonder whether that’s because we have the energy to get involved and that we are privileged to have that energy. In some of the less privileged communities in Auckland people often have no emotional or physical energy left to become involved,” she says.

“Here, we are stirrers from way back. Long may it continue,” she says.

Waterfront construction work nearing completion The Devonport Marine Square upgrade and work on Devonport Wharf are nearing completion, The Devonport boardwalk is expected to be completed in May with works including: • The installation of concrete beams and slabs will be finished this month • The hardwood timber decking will follow the completion of the concrete slabs.

• Structural framing for the wharf building canopy has started. Windows and doors are

now being installed on the eastern side of the ferry building.

• A handrail will be put around the boardwalk just before completion.

The upgrade of Marine Square is expected to be finished by April 2015, with works including: • Concrete polishing work and paving to the area next to the boardwalk is scheduled in March to coincide with the end of the boardwalk construction.

New residents welcomed to Belmont and Bayswater A welcome to Bayswater and Belmont meeting for new residents has been launched.

The organiser, Rose Centre Manager Kath Hair, arrived in Belmont less than a year ago herself .“I know from when I moved to the area last June that it can be tricky settling into a new place,” she said.

The first of four Welcome to Bayswater and Belmont sessions will be held at the Rose Centre on February 24 at 10am.

Anyone new to the Devonport peninsula is welcome, says Hair.

“And those who have been here for a while but want to know more about the community are welcome too,” she says.

People will receive a free morning tea and a welcome pack. “It will have information

about activities, doctors, rubbish collections, that sort of thing, in it,” says Hair.

“We will find out what people need to know and are interested in and try to send them off into the right direction,” she says.

Hair is planning quarterly welcome sessions for 2015. If the experiment is successful, there will be more next year, she says.

The initiative is run in conjunction with similar Welcome to Devonport sessions that have been going for over 11 years and are run by Devonport Community Coordinator Maria Teape.

Teape, who lives in Bayswater, says: “It has always been my suspicion that we have been missing out on people from the Belmont and Bayswater area, so I reckon having separate sessions there is an excellent idea.”

• In April new asphalt will be laid to the eastern side of the square (where the Downer compound currently sits). The Downer site office will remain there until then.

• Bicycle parking has been reinstated to its original location midway along the wharf.

First concert by new library

Book-lovers and schools do battle at Belmont fair Book-lovers heading to the Belmont Primary School Fair on March 1 can expect to get their hands on stacks of books at bargain-basement prices.

Running alongside the Book Bonanza is the annual Battle of the Schools, which sees

children from local primary schools compete in a range of physical challenges.

School principal Bruce Cunningham says it is fun to watch and it’s also a great way of getting surrounding areas involved in the Fair.

As well as the Book Bonanza and Battle of the Schools, the school fair will also include traditional games, a silent and live auction; as well as stalls selling food and drink, arts, crafts, cakes, plants, toys and more.

The fair begins at 12pm and finishes at 5pm.

Devonport Folk Club is emerging from the Bunker to hold its annual free concert at the Band Rotunda behindt the Devonport Library.

The club puts on a musical spread of jigs, ballads, bells and handkerchief dancing, and ask visitors to bring a picnic along.

THe navy CoMMuniTy newsleTTer BiG Hanna Makes navy resourCes Go a seCond round Demonstrating leadership and commitment to sustainability through employing green technology, our Defence Force recently installed a commercial invessel composter for food leftovers at our Navy base in Devonport. The composter, Big Hanna, sitting outside the Vince Malone Galley, is the first of its kind in Australasia.

The New Zealand Defence Force has been implementing several successful green strategies across its operations for a number of years, working with among others Shaun Bowler, Managing Director of Bluefin, a sustainable business consulting and technology provider. When the topic of naval base food scraps arose, Mr Bowler’s research on the subject acquainted him with Big Hanna. The machine’s simple yet elegantly engineered solutions matched the Navy’s requirements and he recommended its acquisition.

A Navy spokesperson says the Navy serves on average 2750 meals per week to its landside staff. The Navy chefs are frugal housekeepers and the food is nutritious and

tasty, yet invariably there are leftovers. All leftovers were previously sent to landfill.

Big Hanna model T240 was ordered in June 2014 from its builders Susteco AB in Sweden and, upon its arrival on November 3, was installed outside the galley’s back door, following a small amount of siteworks. The Government’s Waste Minimisation Fund, which is administered by the Ministry for the Environment, supported the New Zealand Defence Force with the acquisition.

Mr Bowler explains that this is the 48th of its kind in the world and can process up to 170 kg material a day, turning each load into compost in eight weeks.

The approximate 10kg of compost it now produces per day is moved to maturation bays at the Navy sports fields for later use on the base. It replaces the compost the Navy bought in earlier years in a perfect example of resources going a second round.

It empties the compost directly into a plastic bag or offtake bin that is attached on the outlet pipe. Mr Bowler says product arising from good aerobic composting – in New Zealand, this means compliance with the NZS4454 composting standard – is

Once Big Hanna is fully operational, it will also process food waste from the NES galley and wardroom, with the food waste capture from offices, barracks, Narrow Neck and Torpedo Bay a future possibility. Thirty-five tents will be pitched at Waipu Cove for the school’s first Year 8 outdoor camp this month. Two hundred and fifty students, split into two groups, are heading off for a week at a time.

Belmont Intermediate (BIS) principal Nick Hill says the outdoor camp was in part inspired by his experience as a young boy. “Our family camped for 15 years at Northland’s Taupo Bay and not every child in New Zealand gets to sleep under canvas anymore,” he says.

Giving the students the quintessential Kiwi experience is just one rationale for the camp, says Hill. “I also believe in giving the kids an adventure, pushing them outside their comfort zone and letting them take calculated risks.

Overcoming challenges helps them grow, make new friends and develops their self-control,” he says.

Last week, students practiced pitching the school’s brand-new tents –which were funded by the PTA – on the school field. Girls and boys were separated and teams of four or six coped surprisingly well with poles, canvas and pegs in the strong easterly breeze.

Activities at camp include kayaking, bivouac building, tubing, coast walks, surf lifesaving and various leadership-based activities.

Hill has experience taking students on camps from his time as a teacher and dean at Auckland’s King’s School. “I was keen to set up something similar here and the board has backed the idea. It helps that New Zealand has so many amazing outdoor facilities to offer,” he says.

New electives at BIS Photography, 3-D printing, robotics, graphic design, website development, Spanish and French will be on offer for the first time at Belmont Intermediate School this year in a new electives programme.

BIS Principal Nick Hill says: “It’s all about creativity, which is a new school value. We want to give kids a chance to taste and pursue a passion, be creative and entrepreneurial.”

Closer connection to TGS A new 10-day BIS timetable with the same subjects, morning tea and lunch times as Takapuna Grammar School (TGS) next door is a big step towards aligning the two schools, says Hill. “It will make for better connections and a better transition to the high school later on. During lunchtime, TGS kids will be able to play or help coach some of the BIS kids, and it also opens up running language classes together,” he says.

BIS is offering road cycling and rowing for the first time this year, both popular sports at TGS. “So the alignment is happening in sports a little bit as well,” says Hill. In the performing arts sphere, 10 BIS students are in the TGS production of Oliver in March.

No takers for bargain waterfront house A waterfront house being sold for removal at $12,000 has proved too expensive to transport and relocate and will now be demolished.

After Graham Carter listed his 1953 threebedroom, two-bathroom house at 49 King Edward Parade on TradeMe this January, around 20 people were interested in purchasing the place and shifting it off-site, he says.

But interest in the real estate steal of the century faded once potential buyers found out about the cost of moving it elsewhere. Carter

says he was told it costs around $50,000 to relocate the house. So last week he withdrew the property from TradeMe. An industry specialist told the Flagstaff that removing the house is costly because of its structure, saying that the pop-top second storey needed to be craned off and the bottom floor cut into two pieces. Putting the house back together in a new place would also be a big job.

Carter says he is now planning to demolish it in March. “At least I gave it a try, but now

Frances Horne dies Long-time resident Frances Horne has died aged 94 at the Northbridge rest home.

Horne was one of a small number of U3A members celebrated at an “honouring age” function in 2012 to mark U3A’s 15th anniversary.

A knowledgeable plantswoman and gardener, and a keen tramper and enthusiast of New Zealand bush and birds, Horne was heavily involved in Devonport activities over the last three decades.

She served as a volunteer in the Devonport Information Centre and at Devonport Museum, and for many years also worked voluntarily in the gardens at the Wilson Home.

Top scholar in the country!

Neeve Sew Hoy has been named Top Scholar in Art Design, for an exam submission that explored ideas about genealogy. The exam required her to submit a folio of three A1 panels and an eight-page workbook, which contained both visual and written material that investigated this theme in more depth.

For the first page of her Design scholarship workbook she had to write a proposal and this is adapted from it: “Last year my main interest was genealogy and family history. I was inspired by my own family history as I am a sixteenth Chinese. This side of my family originated from my greatgreat-great-grandfather Choie Sew Hoy, who migrated to New Zealand in 1868 from Guangzhou. He went to Otago and set up a business in Stafford Street as a merchant supplying miners and goldfield traders, imported goods and invested in gold mining and waterrace projects.

Choie Sew Hoy became a prominent leader of Otago’s Chinese miners. As one man put it: ‘If Sew Hoy tells you a stone rolls uphill, you believe him.’ Both Chinese and Europeans alike respected him. By the 1880s he was the best-known Chinese man in Dunedin and was also the first person to dredge the Shotover River, after inventing the gold dredge, calling it the ‘Sew Hoy Dredge’.

At the beginning of 2014 my family and I travelled to Otago, where for the first time I saw where this side of my family originated and got to know even more about them. During my trip the surrounding landscapes with their mining ruins and settlers cottages felt very special to me and evoked ideas about the past. While visiting the Dunedin Settlers’ Museum, I became excited by the idea of geneal-

ogy as a topic for my coming year in Design.

My resulting folio dealt with the graphic identity and promotional material for a genealogical foundation called Trace and an exhibition it sponsors called uncover Your roots.

In addition to her top award for Art Design Neeve gained Scholarship for Art Painting as well. Her paint board has been selected to travel around New Zealand in the NZQA top art show and will be published online on the NZQA Top Art website. The ideas Neeve had about her family history worked across the two art disciplines, but she treated them differently in each. Her approach in Paint was more personal and more about the landscape of Otago and how it represented memory for her.

TGS had 38 scholarship awards and others will be acknowledged in future pages.

Limited use of chemicals now required on sports field

After spending an additional $60,000 on Couch Readylawn for one sports field on Vauxhall Rd, Council says it now needs to apply Roundup to rein in the growth of aggressive weeds on the second field. Evan Hicks, Sports Turf Advisor for Auckland Council, said last week in an email to a group of locals who had successfully protested against chemical spraying of the fields last year, that without chemicals the “project is now under threat and becoming a huge waste of ratepayers’ funding.”

During December all proceeds from the sale of Anzac Poppy Kits were gifted to a local father, whose daughter, Elizabeth, is going through her own battle with cancer.

“Locals wholeheartedly and kind heartedly supported our project,” shop owner Fran Stafford said.

“We were able to hand Elizabeth’s father, Tima, a much appreciated Christmas gift to help with his daughter’s hospital expenses and hopefully bring a little cheer to this family.”

To avoid spray drift, the Roundup will be dabbed onto the crown of the weeds with a wand. “This method is being utilised on all other sports field projects on the North Shore with excellent results,” Hicks says.

Sharon Byron-McKay, who has led the com-

munity action against the field spraying, says it is a pity that chemicals are being used after all but says it is a compromise. “The council listened to the community and at least it will only be a very small portion of the field being dabbed with Roundup as opposed to two hectares being sprayed,” she says.

“We feel it has been worth the fight.”

Port protests need to continue The fight against Auckland’s port expansion is not over, says Devonport Heritage spokesperson Margot McRae. Devonport residents should vigorously protest any further reclamation of the Waitemata Harbour, she says. They should demand that Auckland Council lead the city rather than let Ports of Auckland take the reins.

McRae was one of about a dozen locals who attended the public forum ahead of an Auckland Development Committee meeting last Thursday to protest the proposed easing of regulations on future harbour reclamation.

A day after the meeting it was revealed Auckland Council had softened its tougher August 2013 stance and turned reclamations from a “non-complying ” to a “discretionary” activity, effectively allowing Ports of Auckland to apply for further reclamation.

But all is not lost, says McRae. “It is not too late for Auckland Council to act like a leader.

They are the boss of Ports of Auckland, not the

other way around,” she says. Leaving reclamations decisions up to the Resource Consent process was where Council had gone wrong, she says. “If Council had said there won’t be any more reclamation, the port would have to think of alternatives.” It is “a cop-out and weak governance. Council should be calling the shots here,” she says.

The requirement of public consultation doesn’t reassure McRae. “It will pit ordinary locals against the port, which has funds to hire lawyers and planners and consultants. It will not be fair,” she says.

Devonport-Takapuna Local Board Chair Mike Cohen says council staff should know that any tinkering with the harbour is of high interest to Devonport residents and that holding a meeting with 24 hours notice and no other public engagement was council’s attempt to sneak the rule change through. The councillors who voted to allow further reclamation all represented areas that are not near the harbour, he said.
