The house at William Bond St was unoccupied at the time of the blaze, although two cats who lived at the property were unaccounted for immediately after the fire, fire service station officer Craig Lampp said.

The fire service was called at around 11.30am to a house “well involved” in fire.

Between 80 and 90 per cent of the house was destroyed by smoke, fire and water damage, Lampp estimated. The blaze appeared to have started in the lounge. It is understood a dehumidfier was at the centre of fire investigations.

Nearby homes were not threatened by the fire.

‘History boy’ leaves Fairburn print to Depot

Bequest to the Depot… Linda Blincko (right) was delighted to receive the Fairburn print from the estate of Nicholas Tarling, whose sister and brother-in-law Fiona and Rupert Wheeler attended the handover ceremony A rare A.R.D Fairburn rock-drawing print has been donated to the Depot by the estate of well-known history professor Nicholas Tarling.

The painting was handed over at a ceremony last Thursday, attended by the Tarling and Fairburn families on what would have been Nicholas Tarling’s 87th birthday.

Tarling, a professor of Asian and International History at the University of Auckland, lived on Handley Avenue for 50 years and was prominent in New Zealand opera and theatre circles.

His sister and brother-in-law, Fiona and Rupert Wheeler, from Chorleywood, Hertfordshire, in the UK, attended the event.

Devonport resident Fairburn was a prominent New Zealand writer, who also produced some prints in the 1950s.

Paradox saved A local buyer had been found, with final documentation expected to be signed last Tuesday, after the Flagstaff went to press.

“Paradox will not be closing,” said Cooper, although it would be shut for about a week before reopening towards the end of February.

Cooper said she had received an offer for Paradox, which would have seen it close as a bookshop, but she turned it down.

It was through a circle of friendships that this rock-drawing work is now in the Depot’s possession: Fairburn gave it to Olive Johnson, who later gave it to her friend Tarling, who was a supporter of the Depot.

Depot creative director Linda Blincko said it was an honour to recognise Tarling on what would have been his 87th birthday and “what a

most wonderful gift”.

The Depot now has two Fairburn rockdrawing prints. Fairburn’s daughter Dinah Holman donated the first.

Blincko said the prints would be displayed in the Depot’s Vernacular Lounge.

Tarling wrote many scholarly works, as well as a memoir, History Boy.

TGS troupe goes the extra miles on international stage Takapuna Grammar School students have won acting awards at an international performing-arts festival in the United States.

The 21-strong Takapuna Grammar (TGS) contingent won Excellence in Acting and Miles Ford won Best Male Performer at the Junior Theater Festival in Atlanta. Students Franke Ramdhanie and Michael Self received mentions as All-Star performers.

The festival is the largest of its type in the world, was attended by 6000 students from around the globe, and is sponsored by some of the biggest names in the industry, including Disney. The TGS team is believed to be the first from a school in New Zealand to attend the festival.

TGS performed a 15-minute excerpt from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Junior, with the goal of telling a cohesive story with no costumes or props.

“We chose to portray Bell’s story and her growth as a person,” Miles (17) says.

“We had some struggles at the beginning with not being able to use costumes or props, but in the end it lent itself to finding our characters as opposed to focusing on other things.”

The choreographer for the performance was student Emma Self and the excerpt was co-directed by performing-arts teachers Robert Dil, Bruce De Grut and head of dance, Juliet Cryns.

Succeeding on the international stage… the TGS team, with The students, with their teachers and 10 Miles Ford in the middle holding his trophy for Best Male Performer chaperones, travelled to Atlanta via New York, where they spent a week and saw several Broadway shows such as Anastasia and Miss Saigon. The team faced a few travel hiccups along the way including a nine-hour delay at LA airport, getting stuck on the tarmac at JFK airport in minus-14degree weather and half of the group’s bags being lost.

Linda McKay, one of the chaperones, said: “Emergency clothes shopping ensued, in between the jam-packed itinerary.”

Thermals, gloves, hats, winter coats and shoes were some of the purchases. By the time they reached Atlanta, the weather, stress and exhaustion had caused about one third of the group to get sick.

Miles said: “Everyone was feeling under the weather, but as soon as we got on stage the adrenaline kicked in. We were like, we just have to do this and get through this.”

“The festival was a really fun experience.

I loved being around a bunch of people who are into the same thing. It’s not as common to find people who are interested in musical theatre as it is something like sport, and it was comforting to be surrounded by people with the same interests,” he says.

• Six TGS dancers – Abigail McDonald, Miles Ford, Emma Self, Michael Self, Jess Arrowsmith and Alice Cawley – all made it through to final callbacks for Broadway Junior choreography. If they are selected, filming will take place in New York in July.

Beghin the toast of North Shore following T20 win

It’s proving a hot summer for North Shore Cricket Premiers captain-coach Graeme Beghin.

Not only did he spearhead the team in a nail-biting win in the Auckland Twenty20 champs, but he has also been selected to play for the Auckland Aces, playing his first game in a one-day fixture against Central Stags and another last week against Northern Districts.

North Shore were lucky to have Beghin on form as it claimed a sensational final-ball, three-run victory over Howick Pakuranga in the Premier club Twenty20 final at Eden Park Outer Oval.

Shore supporters were ecstatic at the win – following on from winning the title two years ago.

Two centuries were scored on the day: first

by Beghin (109 not out), before Donovan Grobbelaar (112) replied for Howick Pakuranga.

Asked to bat first by Howick, Shore Skipper Beghin took the game by the scruff of the neck in a blistering innings.

He peeled off six sixes and ten fours, timing the ball to perfection.

Grobbelaar was the pick of the bowlers for Howick Pakuranga with 2-26 from his four overs.

Shore posted 186/5 in their 20 overs and Carl Brungar got things off to the perfect start in the field, taking the wicket of Andrew Morrison in the first over.

However, number four Grobbelaar held the innings together for Howick, his eventual 112 including 12 sixes.

With wickets falling at the other end, Howick needed two runs a ball for the final few overs.

The combination of bowlers Ronnie Hira (1-29) and Brungar (3-34) kept it tight in the final overs.

With Brungar bowling the last over, the game was on a knife’s edge, Howick requiring 19. Grobbelaar took a run, then realised he needed to keep strike and turned for a second.

It was Beghin on the boundary who gathered the ball and launched a mighty throw to wicketkeeper Ben Wall, who had the bails off in a flash.

Grobbelaar sank to his knees, knowing it was the end. But was it?

Sam Borland came to the crease and smashed his first ball over the long-on fence for six, leaving just four required off the final delivery.

Borland tried to repeat the dose for the

final ball but couldn’t quite clear the fence.

And who else but Beghin was there to take the catch, ensuring a three-run win for North Shore.

Tractor hauled in but owner escapes prosecution A submerged tractor stuck in the tide off Cheltenham Beach for two days caused no pollution and its owner will not face prosecution, says Auckland harbour master Andrew Hayton.

The tractor became stuck in mud on the afternoon of 22 January and was engulfed for five consecutive high tides. The owner is believed to have retrieved it back to shore on the morning of 24 January.

The harbour master’s office was informed of “an oil spill emanating from a drum” on 23 January and sent a patrol boat to the scene, Hayton said.

“No drum or tractor was observed as they would have been covered by tide. A marker buoy was observed. There was no oil spill.”

The Auckland Council pollution team attended “and likewise observed no oil spill”.

The owner of the tractor informed the harbour master that the tractor had seven litres of petrol plus engine oil on board.

Asked why nothing was done to avoid or contain fuel and lube oil leaking while the tractor was submerged, Hayton said: “No effective containment would have worked for light hydrocarbons.”

The recovery of the tractor was the responsibility of the owner: “Ratepayers should not have to pay for this type of undertaking as a first resort,” he said.

By Rob Drent Initial site works began on the Ryman retirement village prior to Christmas. But the scale of the project is now clearly apparent, with the arrival of a towering crane in the New Year.

While the visual impact of the village has been well canvassed, I’m also concerned about what is happening underground. Ryman’s is one of many developments on the Devonport peninsula – all allowed by council without (seemingly) much consideration of infrastructure. Masses of people moving into new buildings will add more cars, but the effects on traffic are always “less than minor”. What then are the implications for our sewerage system?

Prior to the formation of Auckland Council, North Shore City Council spending was on lockdown for years as outdated pipes and lines were redone. This summer alone, beaches have been closed at least twice as a precaution after sewerage failures. These incidents beg the question as to how effective the remedial works were in the first place, and if the system is designed to take the extra load.

I can’t get excited about Auckland Transport (AT) moves to introduce electric cars for cheap rides to and from the ferry. It’s a cliche, but if it’s such a good idea, why hasn’t someone had it before?

I predict costs will far outweigh benefits.

And with Uber in the market, it would seem cheaper to tap into an operator already set up. Small shuttle buses travelling a set route around Devonport – a bit like a mini version of the Link bus in Auckland – have often been

mooted and are still on AT’s radar. These could provide across-Devonport transport to locals, and employers like the Navy, as well as catering to ferry passengers.

AT talks endlessly about “business cases” for various projects, but I’ve found in practice it has lacked commercial street smarts.

Take the Marine Square development: barely lip service was paid to businesses opposite who almost went under during the drawn-out construction works. This has now been mirrored across Auckland, with similar disruption in Grey Lynn and other centres.

And then there’s the Devonport Wharf. The renovation of the AT-owned building has been painstakingly long. Another summer has been missed without tenants in place. No doubt the spaces will be let just prior to winter – post tourists. What private owner needing to generate income could afford to operate like that?

While we are on the subject of public transport, is it time to have a closer look at the Stanley Bay ferry service?

Fullers has clearly deemed it uneconomic and now AT has taken it over. Is this the best use of ratepayer money? Stanley Bay is a small area with only a limited catchment of users.

I’m not advocating the service be cut per se.

But wouldn’t the money be better spent on more ferries to and from Devonport Wharf?

Or should Stanley Bay be including in a roundthe-harbour loop to include Northcote Point and even Beachaven, Torpedo Bay and perhaps Kelly Tarltons?

In the long-term, an AT-controlled ferry service – running at cost as part of a publictransport system to get people round the city as quickly and cheaply as possible – is the best option. Let’s hope councillor Chris Darby’s appeals to the new Labour government for public-transport reform in Auckland are followed up on.

Someone there has thought up a truly sensible idea. Yes, I am talking about the idea of using an electric car to do small trips of about 3km around Devonport, using an app so that customers can easily book or call for a ride of that length for a modest fee of about $2-$3.

It should ease the parking problem down by the ferry wharf and along the streets leading to it. It will also be great for those coming home on the ferry late in the evening.

The elderly and disabled who are unable to drive will be very happy to know if they live too far away to walk they can call the AT car.

Those who have been away overseas and come home by bus and ferry won’t have to wait hours for a taxi or beg a lift from neighbours. It will be a boon.

I feel sure there will be other advantages too. Top marks to AT!

Marathon Playcentre stint finally comes to a close Passionate Playcentre advocate Heather Tidbury has helped shaped local children’s early lives for the best part of 25 years. She spoke to Rob Drent.

Heather Tidbury struggles to find the exact moment when she became gripped by a love for Playcentre.

She first joined Takarunga Playcentre in early 1988, when her daughter Kate was 15 months old. Her boys Michael and Daniel followed their sister. When Daniel went to school in 2000, Tidbury stayed on, becoming North Shore Playcentre Association president.

“I wanted to keep in touch while most people leave.

“I felt I had to understand the changes we were putting in place and what it was doing...

I suppose I’m a bit weird really.”

She held the post for three years before serving in a variety of other roles in the association, which oversees 21 centres on the North Shore. She took redundancy at the end of 2017.

A huge party was held at Takarunga in Tidbury’s honour and for all the work she had put in over the years. “”I just loved it from the moment I started – I wanted to be involved in the community and meeting people in the community.

“Parents run the centres... I’ve always been struck by the philosophy of that.”

Takarunga Playcentre remains dear to her.

“It’s just a lovely place.” She went there after meeting other young mums in the La Lache League.

Tidbury grew up in Beach Haven, but settled in Beresford St, Bayswater after meeting husband Terry in Africa on her big OE in 1980-82. Her travels included time as a laboratory technician in London, working on the Swiss ski fields, trekking in the Annapurna mountain range and an overland trip to Africa.

Building community... Bayswater’s Heather Tidbury has been dedicated to Playcentre being part of raising a child, as happens in traditional village life in Africa.

The fact that African children were taken everywhere by parents during day-to-day life made an impression on her.

The New Zealand Playcentre Federation was formed in 1948, bringing together associations in Auckland, Wellington and Canterbury. The federation was based on the philosophies of child-initiated play and the

importance of parents as educators of their own children.

Essentially this philosophy remains unchanged today, although Tidbury and others have lived through massive shifts in government policy direction, including the introduction of Education Review Office reports for Playcentres. She was involved as an education officer helping draft early childhood curriculums.

“What’s interesting about Playcentres is that they are different from each other,” she says.

Waiheke Playcentre is not the same as Devonport, for example. “You have learn that each centre you are dealing with is based in a community that is different. You have to respect that.”

Although Tidbury became an administrator who was known for the thoroughness with which sessions were checked, monitored and improved, her “passion was always the centres”. She tried to spend as much time out in the field as possible, focusing on mothers and children.

Over the years, the Devonport community has changed. But according to Tidbury, it is still in great heart.

The Playcentre still offers a nurturing environment for new mothers and their children. Lifetime friends are made and contacts at the Playcentre form the bonds that spread out into the wider community.

February 9, 2018 Birthdays and milestones are celebrated, but helping each other and understanding is just as important.

Tidbury has seen Playcentres become the focus of community support when a parent dies or when one may be suffering from mental health issues.

One of the key changes she has seen since her early Playcentre days is the speed at which society seems to operate.

Two decades ago, Tidbury and other Playcentre mums would walk over to friends’ houses “in the afternoon for a cup of tea while the children would play”.

This is less the case today.

“The main difference is people are timepoor today... life just seems much busier for people.”

People might be working more, but there is also networking via social media, which Tidbury suspects takes up a lot of time. She is not a fan of people always being on their phones when at Playcentre.

One of the most positive aspects of her time in Playcentre is its move to multi-culturalism, she says. When she first started, it catered for Maori and Paheka families. But as society has evolved, so has Playcentre.

One day at Takarunga last year, happy birthday was sung in seven different languages, she says.

Tidbury feels she has left the association and her spot in the Playcentre world in good shape.

“I have helped build a community, but it is not a particularly measurable outcome,”

For now she is enjoying time at the family bach at Mangawhai, and a summer holiday

“where I don’t have to go back to work”.

She looks forward to doing more travelling and sailing in a small boat built by her father.

Young champs brave the heat D e v o n p o r t 1 2 - y e a r- o l d H o l l y Isherwood is a national age-group beach-volleyball champion.

She and her playing partner, Dominique Menoita, aged 13, won the Under-15 division at the national championships in Mt Maunganui last month.

They also came fourth in the Under 17 division, playing against much taller and more experienced opponents, an achievement Volleyball New Zealand acknowledged with a special medal.

Twenty-two teams from all over New Zealand competed in the championships.

Hot weather meant Holly and Dominique had to wear “sand socks” to cope with the scorching sand.

Holly, who is at Belmont Intermediate this year, and Dominique, who attends Westlake Girls, are off to play in the Queensland Junior Beach Volleyball tournament at Surfers Paradise on 15 February. They travel to the US to play in July and have another overseas tournament at the end of the year.

International beach-volleyball coach Susana Vega has spent the summer helping the girls prepare for the agegroup tournament.

Devonport 7-Day Pharmacy celebrates 10 years Valentine’s Day marks Devonport 7 Day Pharmacy’s 10th year in business. Owned and operated by mother-and-daughter team Asma and Nancy, the self-funded family business is located next to Devonport’s New World supermarket In addition to the usual range of products one expects to find, the pharmacy offers a wide range of other services, including: vaccines, emergency contraception, erectile-dysfunction treatment without prescription, blood-sugar finger-prick tests, teeth whitening, ear piercing and digital passport photos.

“We pride ourselves on listening to what our customers want and we try to stock it all.

That’s why you can get such a great variety of drugs, products and services in our store,” says Asma, who has been a pharmacist for 39 years.

The ability to offer such a wide range in the store is facilitated by the impressive list of degrees and certifications that Asma and daughter Nancy have between them. Asma’s other daughter Noha also has a PhD in Health Sciences from the University of Auckland.

Nancy describes herself and Asma as “family-oriented academics” who focus on prevention rather than cure. “We are personally very family-oriented. So it’s nothing for us to work earlier or later to speak in more depth to our customers, to understand their needs and supply prescribed medicines and offer preventative or alternative treatments like our botanical range of products.”

But it hasn’t all been plain sailing for the Egyptian nationals. Within weeks of opening the shop, the business was sued by Asma’s former employer over a trademark infringement.

Asma says that although a legal battle ensued, in the end, they were able to shake hands and

The pharmacists have also had a couple of tricky encounters with customers where they were unable to dispense medication. This was because the prescriptions were incorrect, or for ethical reasons that require pharmacists to refuse to dispense prescriptions.

“Some customers aren’t aware that we are required to follow strict rules and guidelines, otherwise our business will be shut down. But we always try to do our best to deliver for our customers,” says Nancy.

Ten years is a great milestone for any small business, but particularly so for Asma.. Although she owned a successful pharmacy company in Egypt, with multiple store locations, being a foreign national meant she had to recertify before working

“We came to New Zealand rich, but now we are poor! It was expensive to set up our lives here and establish the business.

Asma emigrated to New Zealand 20 years ago with her two young daughters, because of the social and political changes in Egypt at the time. They initially moved to San Francisco, but found the American culture and way of life overwhelming and more confrontational than expected.”

Asma finally decided on New Zealand, and now lives locally in Devonpot. Her daughters went to two different North Shore schools — Takapuna Grammar and Westlake Girls.

“New Zealand is great because everyone is treated equally — no matter what your ethnicity or religion,” she says.

Midlife crisis spurs Sacha’s leap into comedy

Belmont’s Sacha Jones is debuting her onewoman stand-up show The Egg and Sperm Race as part of this year’s Auckland Fringe Festival.

In a life that has ranged from professional ballet to a PhD in political philosophy, campaigning for the Labour Party and publishing a memoir, Jones’s move to comedy was inspired by what she describes as her “midlife crisis”.

“Everything in my life had been so serious, but I always think it’s better to laugh than to cry. I have always been in touch with my funny side,” she says.

Jones has always been passionate about women’s rights. By combining feminism with her love of comedy, she has created a show that brings marriage, motherhood and madness to the stage.

“Comedy has been a male-dominated industry. In a way, women have to be funnier because they have to push past that barrier,” says Jones.

Gender equality isn’t the only challenge she has faced trying to break into New Zealand’s comedy scene. Every year the industry sees a huge intake of young comedians. “It’s overflowing with young people,” she says. “It’s definitely challenging getting up on stage with all the young comedians, but I believe that life experience makes for richer comedy.”

As well as her comedy, Jones is working on having part two of her memoir published, and is writing a novel. “I feel like I’ve come back to who I really am,” she says.

Maunga authority keeps people in the dark Our suburb is defined by Mt Victoria/ Takarunga. The maunga has a greater variety of cultural and historical interest than any of the other Auckland cones. That includes the Depot’s Artspace, the Devonport Folk Club, the Michael King Writers’ Centre, Maori fortification terraces and kumara pits, 19th century military relics, also a radar station at the summit, along with sweeping public views of the city, and long-established vehicle access to all these things.

Yet in 2016, the Tupuna Maunga Authority (TMA) included Mt Victoria/Takarunga in its list of car-ban maunga without any public plan as to how all this would be managed.

The Devonport-Takapuna Local Board voted against the proposed car ban in December 2016, withholding any decision until there’d been greater consultation.

Majurey’s expressed the view that the TMA’s set-up legislation doesn’t require it to heed a local board’s decisions.

Since then, there’s also been the question of rent rises for those charities on the maunga’s flanks. The TMA has the power to raise rents from present ‘peppercorn’ level to ‘market’ level, and to shorten their leases. This gives it power, if it so decides, to chase these charities right off the mountain. Will it?

On this, and parking issues that would arise around the car ban, we need to know the TMA’s long-term plans. The TMA’s set-up legislation placed Maori spiritual values at the centre of Auckland’s maunga management then asked the TMA to act for the common benefit of Auckland’s mana whenua, and “the other people of Auckland”. These “other people” are presently being kept in the dark.

We chose Set Date of Sale as the method of sale because our Vendor was a private person and didn’t want the exposure of a public Auction. The process also allowed the market to set the value and the price wasn’t capped, allowing our Vendor to capture every dollar available from the market.

Kāinga Pāho Tēnā koutou katoa. Happy new year and welcome to our first column for 2018.

If you’re a regular Flagstaff reader you will be aware that Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei is redeveloping some of the former Navy land around Hillary Crescent and Roberts Road. In mid-2018 we will start redevelopment in Rutherford Street (Hillary) and Roberts Road to replace the existing standalone houses with a mix of single houses, semi-detached dwellings, terraced homes and apartments.

Before we can get started though, we have to remove the existing houses. Rather than demolish these homes, which are solidly built and have been well-maintained by the Navy, we are going to recycle them.

We have advertised them and

are pleased to report they have been snapped up and will house new families in locations across Auckland and as far away as the Bay of Plenty and Northland.

The houses will start moving off-site in late March and we want to make sure this process runs smoothly – but we need your help. We are endeavouring to shift two houses at a time and, to avoid disruption to traffic, this will occur overnight between the hours of 10pm and 2am. The trucks will park in Rutherford Street for loading and make their way down Eversleigh Road, turn into Lake Road and Esmonde Road and then onto the motorway. Each truck will have a pilot vehicle front and back.

Given the size of the houses, they will overhang the footpath

so we will be asking residents not to park on the street on the removal nights. Temporary “no parking” zones will be put in place and we will give neighbours plenty of notice about the dates and what to do nearer the time.

Other changes you may notice in the coming months are fences going up around the site, installation of the Security

Cameras and removal of some vegetation next to the houses and preparatory ground works.

We will of course keep you informed as we proceed with the redevelopment of the land and are happy to answer any questions you might have.

Off to Oxford

Prefect, rowing club captain, debater, top academic and now, he is off to read law at Oxford.

Local scholar Dougal Burden has been offered a place at one of the top universities in the world. Only 225 students worldwide were offered places from an initial list of 1805 applicants.

Dougal was one of the 657 interviewed via Skype in early December; two law professors gave him legal exercises over two 30-minute sessions, designed to identify speed-of-thought processes, analytical ability and clarity of oral expression of ideas.

Dougal said: “It was pretty challenging and intense but fascinating and intriguing, too.” His years in school debating teams and as a member of MUNA teams prepared him well for this challenge, he feels.

Dougal has always been an outstanding student, gaining Excellence Certificate Endorsement at all three levels of the NCEA. In Year 13, he gained 91 credits at Excellence and four of his five subjects were also endorsed at Excellence and one at Merit.

He is still waiting on his Scholarship results.

When asked ‘Why Law?’ he replied: “I feel that’s where my strengths lie, in argumentative essay writing, a passion for developing sound and logical arguments, and being keen on current events.”

Constitutional law, probably in the UK, is where he would like to end up. The whole process will be very expensive and right now Dougal is looking for work; he needs to save as much as possible before September, to pay for the cost of international student tuition and lodgings. He is happy to look at a range of jobs; whatever helps to fill the bank account.

Dougal has lived here since he was four, emigrating with his family from the UK. His mother, Morag, owns Devonport Flowers, and his father, Simon, is a business analyst with Vodafone. Along with his twin brother, Hamish, Dougal and his family have been well-regarded members of the local community for many years. The whole TGS school community is also proud of Dougal and he fully deserves his place at such a prestigious institution.

A perfect score in IB Yujie (Stephanie) Wang joined an elite group of scholars when she gained a 45, the highest possible score, for her IB Diploma. Stephanie led a 33-strong cohort, with 31 students gaining their diplomas; including two other students with scores over 40. Six New Zealand students, three from St. Cuthbert’s College, and one each from Kristin School and AIC joined Stephanie with the perfect score.

Throughout her two years in the course, Stephanie’s work ethic has been amazing and her dedication to all aspects of the diploma has been exemplary. She received the subject prizes for Economics, Mathematics, Physics, Chinese and English B at the IB Prize-giving.

The Core elements, which include an extended essay of 4000 words and service hours in creativity, activity and service have, also been a strength for Stephanie.

She worked as a tutor throughout the twoyear-period and was the Academic Coordinator, with the After School Programme at Belmont Intermediate School. This programme aims

Suhwoo (Veronica) Yoon was awarded a 43. She was first in Spanish Ab Initio, History, Chemistry and Theory of Knowledge at prizegiving, and the joint winner, with Stephanie, of the Jackie Rodgers Cup for Excellence in International Baccalaureate.

JJ (Jack) Maran, who also found time to be the student representative on the Board of Trustees, was awarded a 41.

THE LATEST IN SPORT Work in progress on the new enclosure A very special group of TGS students and two dedicated teachers, Ms Hannah Kelly and Mr Matt Cade, gave up their holiday break as part of the World Challenge programmme and travelled to Cambodia and Laos for three weeks. The 13 students had to plan, execute and lead their own journey that involved jungle trekking and four days as volunteers at the Laos Wildlife Rescue Centre.

Matt and Hannah were justifiably very proud of the students, who displayed outstanding leadership skills

and community service. Their work at the wildlife centre included the construction of a macaque enclosure at the centre (formerly the Laos Zoo), which is being upgraded, with improved conditions that focus on conservation.

The managers at the rescue centre were truly grateful for the contributions of the students; both for their hard work and the donation of funds, to complete the final enclosure, in the primate area.

It was an awesome achievement that powerfully illustrated the potential of our students.

ON THE PITCH: Samantha Petherick and Emily Handyside were in the Auckland Hearts Under-18 Girls team that won the National U18 Tournament. Anna Browning, Ruby Worrall, Libby Easterbrook and Kennedy Scott played for the Auckland Under-15 Girls team, winning the National U15 Tournament. Campbell McKegg, played in the Auckland Under-17 Boys side that won the National U17 Tournament.

ON THE FIELD: Imogen Ayris won the Vaulters in the Bay competition in Hastings recently, with a new PB of 4.10m. This qualifies her for the Junior World Athletics Championship in Tampere, Finland, July 10-15.

ON THE LAKE: The Cambridge Town Cup, Lake Karapiro: Special mention to Evan Williams, who won gold in the U16 Boys single, as well as a bronze with Jack Featherstone in the U17 Boys Double and bronze with Jacob Davey in the U16 Boys Double.

A sensational effort given over 1700 students from across the North Island compete at this regatta.

Paddy Stafford-Bush – standing up for her passions Decades of community work by Paddy Stafford-Bush were recognised with a Queen’s Service Medal in the New Year Honours.

And although Stafford-Bush says she is pegging back her activities slightly, when the Flagstaff caught up with her last week, there were no signs of her slowing down at all.

She is currently on the Heart of the City board and chair of the North Shore Events Centre, which has just undergone a major upgrade.

At the top of her to-do list is finalising the Bayswater Community Committee survey results on the best outcome for land soon to be developed by Bayswater Marina.

“I’ve always stood tall and been prepared to stand up for what I’m passionate about – the community, the environment, heritage,” she says. This has meant rolling up her sleeves and getting involved.

Now in her 60s, Stafford-Bush was a geography, physical education, economics, accounting and social studies teacher at Takapuna Grammar School around three decades ago, when moves began to establish the Rose Centre. She was the school representative on the steering group, and took a leading role in the plan’s development. Filling a vital community niche between Devonport and Takapuna, the centre has just celebrated its 25th anniversary. Today, Stafford-Bush is its patron.

She served on the Devonport Community Board from 1990 and was chair for two terms, until 2001. It is for her work on the board that

she is perhaps best known.

“R, R and R” – roading, rates and rubbish, were the nuts and bolts. But she recalls as highlights the development of strategic plans for the town centre (Marine Square) and parks (Woodall and Ngataringa) and the introduction of heritage guidelines.

“There were a lot of good outcomes for the community... people felt they were consulted and involved, they were part of it,” she says.

The board worked closely with council officers – it even had its own planning committee and commissioners who would bring local knowledge to resource-consent decisions.

After her time on the the board, she worked for Auckland Regional Council’s Coast Care team, working on walkways, riparian plantings and similar projects. A “Paddy’s Bush” plaque stands in a corner of planting near O’Neill’s Point Cemetery in honour of the effort she put into its restoration. There was also a stint on the Auckland Conservation Board for five years, and she has had a key involvement since 2002 in the North Shore Heritage Trust (for many years as chair),which has supported more than 200 heritage-restoration projects.

The project that perhaps means most to her is the Bobby Stafford-Bush Foundation, set up in memory of her and husband Bryan’s son, who died aged 16 in a car accident in 2001.

“It’s a living inheritance – largely for young people to achieve their goals and dreams.”

Locally, Stafford-Bush is still a JP. In the last few years, she has taken up skiing, painting and mountain biking. Her most recent moutain biking trip was to Madagascar and her next is to Colombia in April.
