Paradox Books reopens: bookshop retained in Devonport A group of Devonport authors is expected to attend the Paradox Books reopening celebration on 27 February.

The long-standing Devonport bookshop was set to be closed for a week before reopening under new ownership on 28 February.

Devonport resident Terrie Gray will be, taking over the shop. She said it has been a long-held dream to own a bookshop.

Paradox Books had been in financial difficulties, with Penguin Books putting a liquidation application before the High Court claiming unpaid debts.

Previous owner Rachel Cooper told the Flagstaff earlier this month that the debt had been paid and the business sold.

Gray said: “I’m particularly happy it (the bookshop) is staying.

“It was a terrible thought that it could go.”

A bookshop is “something that should be in a village, particularly a literate community like Devonport,” Gray said.

Paradox Books complements second-hand bookshop Bookmark and Haywards Paper Power, which also stocks books – creating a hub for book lovers, Gray said.

Gray worked for many years as a librarian: at the University of Auckland, and at law libraries in Perth and Auckland.

Playcentre and was the administrator at Holy Trinity Church for nine years.

Recently, she has run her own company, Penstemon Publishing, producing family histories and poetry, alongside photography books and the recent Devonport Community Calendar for Haywards Paper Power.

Urban bird monitoring An urban bird monitoring project is being launched in Devonport.

Jim Eagles, a Devonport Environment Network volunteer (with the help of the Department of Conservation and Unitec), has organised a citizen science project to track birds.

A training session will be held for locals keen to learn about 5-Minute Bird Counts – the method used by DoC to survey bird life.

Devonport Pest-free Coordinator Celia Walker said the bird monitoring “will help us determine the success of the rat trapping project, and also get more locals paying attention to the birds in their backyard.”

Man’s best friend is rats’ worst enemy Evie is one of Devonport’s rat-catching volunteers, even though she hasn’t signed up online or picked up a free rat trap. She is simply a natural hunter.

The four-year-old labrador/bull terrier mix belongs to Barrie Nuttall, who lives on Empire Rd. But Nuttall says Evie likes it best in the bush along the bottom trail at Ngataringa Park, where he takes her for regular walks That’s where she has caught more than 70 rats in the last 18 months.

“She regularly brings at least one or two a fortnight to me. And I am sure she catches quite a few in the bush that I don’t see,” Nuttall says.

In one frenetic rat hunt, Evie stopped at a tree with a series of holes in its base. “By the time I got there, she was burrowing at the base of the tree and she had the rat by the tail,” Nuttall says.

“She always finds them. Once I was sitting on a seat and Evie had gone rooting into a flowerbed and chased two little rats out right underneath my feet. Just last week, she chased a rat out of a pile of tree branches.”

Evie doesn’t seem to eat the rats, at least not the ones she presents to her owner.

Nuttal got Evie from the Silverdale animal shelter in May 2016.

“My wife Patricia talked me into getting her because she was dying of cancer and felt that Evie would be company for me later on,” says Nuttall.

The couple were married nearly 55 years and had been living in Devonport since 1965, when Patricia passed away in September 2016.

“So I now own a dog and she goes wherever I go. If I go shopping into Devonport she comes in the car. She even sleeps on a blanket on the bed beside me. If someone offered me

“I have her off the leash and keep a whistle to call her back, but I pretty much give her free rein. You can’t keep her out of the water.

Sometimes she goes into the sea here at low tide and comes out completely covered in green mud,” he laughs.

And maybe Evie has another rat tail between her teeth.

“The intention is that this investment will provide real wastewater future-proofing for this part of Auckland.”

Watercare is also updating the hydraulic models for the Devonport peninsula to recognise the improvements that will be achieved from these two major projects.

“These models will identify where and when capacity needs to be built into the existing network to allow for the intensification that will occur under the Unitary Plan, and to address constraints (overflows) that occur in wet weather.

$3 million upgrade latest plan for soccer ground A $2.76 million upgrade of the North Shore United football club fields is being recommended by Auckland Council after a lengthy consultation with local residents.

Devonport-Takapuna Local Board members were to discuss the proposal on Tuesday night this week after the Flagstaff went to press.

Representatives from the soccer club, as well as local residents, were to speak to the board at the start of the meeting.

The changes to Dacre Park, the home of North Shore United’s Allen Hill Stadium, include hybrid turf surfacing to the main pitch at the football ground, new lighting, a northern access way and an additional 43 car parks.

As part of the project, fences would come down at the ground and it would become an open park.

The Auckland Unitary Plan allows fields (with associated noise effects) to be used Monday to Saturday 7am–10pm and Sunday and public holidays 9am–6pm. Council officers said this level of use at Allen Hill would be unreasonable. Council has recommended that the use of the lighting shall be restricted to sports club training only, on Tuesday to Friday evenings, 5pm–8pm.

North Shore United (NSUAFC) has received a grant to maintain the playing field and grounds. But under a new proposed lease, the main football pitch, small training field, car

park, banks and lawns around the clubhouse and the steep bank area will revert to council control. Council will be responsible for ongoing maintenance. NSUAFC will only be responsible for its currently occupied buildings.

The soccer-ground upgrade has been through various options since an initial proposal in 2015 to install one full-size artificial field and one three-quarter-sized artificial field.

Each field would have been able to sustain 50 hours of use per week (100 hours of use in total).

NSUAFC has approximately 1,000 members made up of 300 First Kicks, 48 junior and youth teams (boys and girls), and 10 senior teams.

NSUAFC has said that the upgrade at Dacre Park would be used primarily for junior and youth teams to cater for home competition games and training on a quality field rather than having to use the lower-standard fields in Devonport and fields outside the local-board area.

A group of local residents believes that Dacre Park is a confined space amongst residential housing and is not suitable for the proposed level of intensification. Their main concerns are around noise and traffic, a report to the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board said.

If funding is approved, council aims to upgrade the fields between October 2018 and March 2019.

Soccer-ground costs pile up The costs of progressing a planned $2.76 million upgrade of the Allen Hill soccer grounds have topped $200,000.

Feasibility reports, survey reports and consultation with a small but vocal group of local residents have seen costs balloon out, before a sod has been turned at the ground.

The Flagstaff sought a full list of costs spent on the project since engagement with neighbours began in July 2015.

A council breakdown supplied under the Local Government Meetings and Information Act, put the costs at $188,394.88 plus GST at January 2018. It covered 13 reports:

• $13,186 for an acoustic survey and reports provided by Styles Group Ltd. • $3032 for a topographical survey by Kiwi Vision Consultants Ltd. • $10,911 for a concept lighting design for sports fields and car parks by LDP Limited.

Slower response to fire: Murphy’s Law The first fire appliance to get to a fire that destroyed a Stanley Bay house on February 2, arrived just under seven minutes after the alarm was raised.

A Parnell fire truck was based at Takapuna to cover for the Devonport and Takapuna stations crews, who were on a training exercise.

It would usually take around two to three minutes for an appliance to get to a peninsula fire from the Devonport Fire Station.

The house in William Bond St suffered 80 to 90 per cent damage in the fire, which is believed to have been started in a dehumidifier in the lounge.

Devonport station officer Greg Booker said the Parnell appliance was about 4km away when the call came in and took six minutes and 53 seconds to arrive.

The Devonport and Takapuna stations had been training on a Navy ship. They arrived at the fire soon after the Parnell appliance.

Booker said it was “Murphy’s Law” that fire struck while the Devonport crew was in training but that “rarely happened”.

Local folkie wins another Tui award Devonport folk musician Micheal Young has bagged his second Tui award.

Young plays the double bass for Albi & the Wolves, which won the 2018 Best Folk Artist Tui. He previously won the prestigious national award with bluegrass band Wires and Wood, which took out the best folk-album category in 2011.

Tuis are presented at the New Zealand Music Awards, which have been held annually since 1965.

Albi & the Wolves’ award was announced at the Auckland Folk Festival in Kumeu at the end of January.

The trio, whose other members are Chris Dent (guitar/lead vocals) and Pascal Roggen (violin), have used Devonport’s music scene – and the support of locals – as a platform to grow from.

Young is a member of the committee that runs the Devonport Folk Club at The Bunker on Takarunga/Mt Victoria. Albi & the Wolves have have been part of many of Devonport’s musical events. As well as the Bunker, they have played at the Vic, the Depot and Folk in the Park.

Young says the Vic is one of his favourite places to perform at.

“It has a nice vibe, a great stage and I love the art deco,” he says.

“We’ve had a great response from everyone in Devonport. We even get people singing our lyrics back to us.”

Young describes Albi & the Wolves’ music as energetic folkrock-soul.

Albi & the Wolves will be attending the 2018 awards ceremony later in the year. The band will walk the red carpet with the other artists and have their award announced in front of a packed Spark Arena. The event is also televised. “We have not yet been asked to perform, but you never know,” says Young.

Since forming just three and a half years ago, the band has toured all over New Zealand and visited Australia, where they performed at the Woodford Folk Festival in front of 130,000 people.

The trio are working on their second album and hope to grow their following outside New Zealand. “The long-term goal is to be playing at stadiums all around the world,” says Young. ● Albi & the Wolves perform at The Vic on 21 April.

Heritage stories spark art exhibition A heritage art exhibition has been inspired in part by stories in the Flagstaff highlighting the plight of old houses and buildings.

After the Flagstaff featured a grand house of Cheltenham Rd, which has its back left open to the elements, artist David Barker went and painted it. It led to Barker, and another Devonport artist Graham Downs, becoming part of a heritage exhibition in Newmarket next month.

Downs has included a painting called “A new dawn — the old Masonic”, which features the waterfront building that has now been turned in apartments.

“It’s a new build, not a restoration,” says Downs. “But at least it looks like it belongs in Devonport and it is better than a demolition.”

In 100 years, the Masonic will once again be a historic building, he says.

I remain committed to my stance that vehicles should be banned from the summit and upper reaches of Takarunga/Mt Victoria.

Work began this week on making the summit a vehicle-free space. The summit and summit road will be closed to private vehicles, including motorbikes and scooters, from March 1.

Parking spaces at the Kerr St entrance to the maunga will have parking-time limits enforced from April 1.

While the closure has been signalled over the last couple of years, the announcement of when it would happen was abrupt: a media release last week. And it is this lack of consultation that has angered locals.

A meeting between the Maunga Authority and the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board was scheduled last Friday, after the announcement, giving a feeling that local input into the wider issues of the closure were not the top priority.

Likewise, for local groups using the mountain, such as the Devonport Folk Club based at the Bunker. Car-parking overspill in surrounding streets is expected, as are difficulties for access for Bunker supporters.

The new ban follows a successful trial of pedestrian-only access to the summit of Mt Eden.

Automated gates will preserve access for people with limited mobility, while cyclists will be able to use the shared summit pathways.

In addition to the enhanced experience without cars, scooters and tour buses, the summit of the mountain is regarded by Maori as the most sacred part.

As I said in an editorial last year, I have some sympathy for older residents, who will have trouble getting up the mountain without a car.

In five years, I predict the fumes and visual pollution of vehicles on the mountain will be a distant memory.

Further to last issue’s column throwing a cold flannel over Auckland Transport’s (AT) electric cars ride-share idea; one AT scheme I would like to see tried is dynamic lane controls on Lake Rd. A 12-month AT trial commenced on the Whangaparaoa peninsula on January 24. In summary, dynamic lanes, with the aid of traffic control devices and LED lights, create an extra lane for vehicles travelling in the peak direction.

The Whangaparaoa Rd trial will operate in the afternoon peak from 4-6pm until April 17, then be extended to the morning peak (6.30 to 9 am).

Whangaparaoa Rd is a major arterial road, with similarities to Lake Rd. If it works, and all evidence suggests it will, Lake Rd should be the next problem stretch to introduce this strategy.

Many would favour it being put in place now.

Vigilance promised over fountain In response to comments by Max Dennison (Flagstaff, 26 January) about the shameful state of the Devonport fountain: I totally agree.

I have over the years been in contact with Auckland Council to restore it to working order. Their response has always been slow.

I have been in cellphone contact with the maintenance contractor, who is at present waiting for parts to fix the flow and drainage.

However, he is not responsible for the cleaning. That is the council’s responsibility, apparently. It should be subject to a regular inspection and cleaning.

It is a passion with me, so take heart that I will be vigilant over having the fountain memorial restored to its former glory for us to appreciate once again.

Seaweed a natural occurrence Those of us who have been around for a while are aware that seaweed on North Shore beaches is nothing new. You always get some after a good north-easterly blow.

The clamour to sanitise beaches because seaweed does not look good, smells or discolours the water seems a bit out of kilter with environmental principles.

I wonder how much research has gone into looking at the ramifications of removing from the beach what is a naturally occurring substance that usually is gone within a week of tidal movement?

Vauxhall shops morph into Cheltenham Village The local constabulary need look no further than the real-estate fraternity for the old Vauxhall Shops sign, vanished from the corner of Albert and Vauxhall Rds. A recent real-estate promotion says: “This lovely three bedroom, two bathroom home is perfectly positioned across from the reserve with North Head as the backdrop, Cheltenham Village an easy promenade to the east, and the waterfront a pleasant stroll to the west.” The real-estate industry seems determined to eradicate the humble junction from the map in favour of the posh-sounding “Cheltenham Village”.

I would not be surprised if this has a negative impact both biologically and in terms of sand retention.

Back in the 60s, pipis were present on Takapuna Beach, thousands of sprats could be seen at the old boat ramp at high tide and there was always lots of sand at the north end of the beach. Not any more. I wonder why?

Give-a-lot couple share the benefits of success Margaret and David Allis have been working to make the world a better place since they met in 1982.

The young Christian newly-weds moved to Otara, then India, to work with the poor. Today, as the owners of a successful small local business, they maintain a modest lifestyle and generously donate surplus profits to good causes. They spoke to Maire Vieth.

David and Margaret Allis have given away more than $1.5 million to national and international charitable causes over the last eight years. In 2010, they decided they were making enough money, and could give some away.

They found their house was big enough to accommodate a large family and small home business, the old Toyota van still ran well, and lettuces, spinach, beetroot and strawberries grew abundantly in the backyard. They don’t go out to eat a lot.

But they’ve retained some home comforts.

The Allises have an espresso machine in the kitchen and a spa pool on the deck. They even plan the occasional trip to Europe, where their son John (26) lives.

But trendy fashion labels and home renovations are absent in the cosy Allis home. David likes to wear ethical fashion and Margaret likes to shop second-hand. “In general, we try to reduce what we spend on ourselves,” David says.

Margaret and David have created a somewhat unusual model for their business, Barcodes New Zealand, which sells barcodes to be used on retail products.

“Around 10 years ago, we said we were happy to get a salary from the business, but that we would give future profits above that away,” David says.

“So we locked in the giving away by putting the business into a charitable trust, knowing that once money is in your pocket, it is so much harder to let go of.”

The IRD didn’t like the arrangement at first. “They think you need to run a business to make a profit. We feel you can run a social business to provide employment and to give money away,” David says.

The business, which employs four people part-time and David full-time, is owned by the Kings Trust (a charitable trust).

Happy to give… Margaret and David Allis Last year, the trust donated more than $90,000 to charities, mostly to combat the effects of malaria and worms on children in developing countries.

In August 2017, another $3000 was donated to lauch national speech competition Just Talk, in which New Zealand high school students are encouraged to discuss social-justice issues.

More than 150 students (including two from Takapuna Grammar) from 60 schools competed for the prize, which is split equally between the winning student, their school and a charity of choice.

The Allises are also behind smaller local projects. During Devonport’s Santa Parade, they ran an ethical Christmas Market at Devonport Community House. Earlier in the year, they screened movies on the international drug trade and fashion, at Devonport Community House.

It’s a joint mission. David comes up with most of the ideas and pushes them forward, but it’s only because he and Margaret are on the same page that it has worked so long and so well.

The couple met through a mutual Devonport friend, 36 years ago. Margaret was a physiotherapist and had grown up in Devonport. David was an engineering student who had come to visit on his motorbike.

Both came from Anglican families but

had felt on the periphery at church since their teens. “It was more of a counter-cultural thing.

Not that our families were bad or wrong at all, but both of us were looking for a deeper purpose in life,” says David.

The two immediately connected. They had read Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger by evangelical theologian and social activist Ron Sider, independently. The book is about the alleviation of poverty worldwide. Both wanted to move away from materialism. “I guess we felt privileged, but asked ourselves what for?” David says.

They married a year later and sold their wedding gifts at a garage sale. The money went towards sewing machines for people in the Philippines.

The plan was to head to India with a Christian mission. But they needed theological training and local experience first. Margaret and David both enrolled at Bible College in Henderson for a year. “We didn’t actually want a theological qualification, and did the minimum time we could get away with because we were in a hurry to do what we wanted to do,” David says.

In 1985, the young couple bought a house in Otara and joined a local Pentecostal church, where they helped looking after atrisk children.

During the week, David worked at Fisher & Paykel and Margaret at Middlemore Hospital, until their first two children, Amelia (30) and

The young family left for Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) in 1990, to work as part of the mission Urban Leadership Foundation, working with a small team of seven. Their third child, John (26) was born there.

Kolkata was known as the “graveyard of missions,” and lived up to its reputation, David says. Both work and family life were hard-going.

“We employed someone to do a mapping project of the different ethnic groups and found two small churches in the slums of six million people.

“The theory of our development work was to increase trust among people to improve their ability to develop business.

The practice was hard, but there is some good stuff happening in Kolkata now that we maybe were a small part of then,” David says.

Margaret says raising three children without any family help in India was something they couldn’t handle for more than three years. Eating was a big issue, for example. “The children and I always ate at home and had our own food and water. But David was about 20kg lighter when we got back home,” she says.

In 1992, the Allises returned to New Zealand and moved to Devonport to be near Margaret’s parents. “We looked at the four cheapest houses in Devonport and bought one of them,” David says. They spent $140,000 on a two-bedroom bungalow on a big Handley Ave section.

For the next 15 years, David worked a minister for the Equippers Church, an apostolic church in Auckland’s CBD. He ran a bible college and an alternative education programme for long-term truants and kids who had dropped out of school, which grew quickly across nine Auckland communities, received Ministry of Education funding and

still runs citywide today as Creative Learning Scheme.

By 1998, the Allises had five children, including Tim (23) and Luke (20). They sold the bungalow and built a bigger house on the back section. Esther (15) was born five years later.

Margaret was putting her energy into Narrow Neck Playcentre. It ultimately shifted the family’s faith, she says. “We saw Playcentre as the sort of community that churches should be.”

In 2004, the Allises started a ‘house church’ at their home and ran it for 12 years, with the help of three other North Shore families.

“It was a really simple church where you could just turn up, have coffee and talk.

“It was unstructured, creative and the kids liked it as well. Everyone had something to offer and all questions were acceptable, many of which you couldn’t ask at church,”

These days, the couple attends Devonport’s Holy Trinity Church.

Soon after, David started his first smallbusiness venture – selling unicycles from home. “The kids had got into unicycling. I had no background in business at all. But the idea of learning how to run one somehow

made sense,” he says.

“It went quite well for a while, and grew until I supplied unicycles to 120 schools.

Then the Warehouse and Trade Me started selling them cheap and there was no longer a market for us.”

In 2006, he kicked off a second business idea – the educational family game Kiwi Quiz.

“Margaret and I had bought an educational question-and-answer game for the kids and we didn’t like it,” he says. The idea for a better alternative was sparked.

“Basically, Kiwi Quiz is like Trivial Pursuit without the board, the trivia and the categories. There are four different levels of difficulty of New Zealand-related questions, so it’s a mixed-ability game for the whole family,” he says.

A first print run of 2500 sold quickly and got the attention of Whitcoulls and Paper Plus, which is when David’s most successful business idea yet was born.

“Whitcoulls wanted barcodes, which turned out to be quite expensive. You had to join an organisation for $600 per year and then you could buy 100 barcodes. But I needed only two. So I did some asking around and then decided to start selling them myself, individually,” he says.

The business soon expanded to Australia and, nine years ago, into Europe. “There are about 60 companies like us worldwide, most of them American. But we were the first that started selling in places like the UK, Ireland, South Africa, India, Singapore and Hong Kong and we grew really well,” he says.

Five years ago, David franchised his barcode business internationally. “People don’t pay us any money up front. They only pay us for the bar codes they sell, after they have sold them. I want it to do well and help and be good for people,” he says.

With both businesses going strong, David’s mind has found room for other ideas as well. Six years ago, he started the Devonport Locals Facebook page as a local community-building initiative.

“I moderate it as little as possible. I approve posts before they go up and often don’t even look at the responses after that,” he says.

“If people raise an issue, I occasionally delete comments or block people, but I’m pretty light on it.”

Then last winter, after youngest daughter Esther (15) had delivered a speech at school, David read a book about the value of competition. He decided to kick off a national speech contest for schools.

All the Allis kids had given speeches at Vauxhall, Belmont Intermediate and Takapuna Grammar schools. “Often on issues like poverty and I thought, yes, it was an influential part of their upbringing.

“I thought if there was a way to channel kids towards more meaningful speech topics than homework, uniforms or the Kardashians, this one could work.”

THANK YOU BILL ENGLISH No matter what your politics, it’s fair to say that saying goodbye after 27 years Bill English has earned the respect of his colleagues across the political divide. Bill has been rightly described as a formidable parliamentarian, Finance Minister and Prime Minister.

For those of us who understand something of the burden of responsibility that comes with the privilege of serving in public office it is an extraordinary milestone that few achieve. I’ve been a proud member of his team and I wish him the best for his future with Mary and their family. In the next issue of Flagstaff I’ll update you on his replacement - we are spoilt for choice and it’s an important and difficult decision for Caucus to make on the 24th to elect the best person to lead National.

Congratulations to our own local high achievers in the service of their community and their country who received acknowledgement in the New Years honours. The North Shore was well represented with Aidan Bennett, Helen Pollock, Bill Speedy, Paddy Stafford-Bush, and Sue Stanaway, who have been recognised for their commitment to make a significant personal commitment to shaping the North Shore to become the vibrant community it is today. It is quite a process to be put forward for an honour, and as Minister for Arts, Culture, and Heritage over the past 3 years, I’ve been a member of the Honours Committee so I’ve supported our local contenders and I am very familiar with the nomination process. If you think of anyone who deserves an honour and want the support of your local North Shore MP, please

The End of Life Choice Bill passed its first reading late last year, and as a member of the Justice Select Committee, I will continue my fight against this dangerously permissive bill that contains woeful protections for the vulnerable. If passed it would open New Zealand up to becoming the most liberal country in the world for laws around dying. It’s highly likely to lead to the coercion of our most vulnerable including the disabled, elderly, depressed, or with mental illness to prematurely end their lives with few protections from abuse of the system. I will be speaking at Devonport’s St Francis de Sales, at 7pm on Wednesday March 14, as part of the Courageous Conversation series – anyone who is interested to hear me speak more in depth about this issue, please do come along. Off to South America to reduce the gender pay gap Local father of four boys Stephen Lawrence is heading to Ecuador to help raise women’s earning power.

For the next month, Lawrence, an executive in IBM’s Global Technology Services, is supporting an Ecuadorian not-for-profit organisation. He is one of two New Zealanders at IBM chosen for similer projects this year.

Sendas is located in the city of Cuenca. It works to empower local women, particularly by increasing their income, thereby reducing poverty and improving gender equality.

Lawrence is part of a team of four IBM staff involved in the project. “The six staff who run Sendas have to demonstrate their value to funders all the time and we will help them with that. We will share our skills with them, on things like project monitoring and evaluation processes. It’s going to be four weeks of intense work with the goal of making a good change,” he says.

Lawrence, an accountant by background, says getting ready for the trip has already changed him for the better. “That women earning more can reduce poverty in developing countries is something I hadn’t even thought about until three months ago. I feel myself changing as a person already,” he says.

The trip has become a topic for discussion at the dinner table with wife Tracey and sons Chris (20), Ollie (18), Alexander (16) and Sebastian (14).

Lawrence has been studying Spanish for 18 months during his daily ferry commute to the CBD. And he has started a blog about the trip.

“I used to write a lot of poetry. But this my first time writing prose, and it’s nice to find that little bit of creativity in me,” he says.

Locals upset at mountain consultation process Devonport residents are annoyed at what they believe is a lack of consultation over the closure of the summit of Takarunga/Mt Victoria to cars.

The summit (tihi) and summit road will be permanently closed to all private motor vehicles, including motor bikes and scooters, from 1 March 2018.

The Maunga Authority was to have a meeting with the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board last Friday, but member Mike Cohen said it was set to be little more than an announcement of the closure. The Maunga Authority had failed to get alongside the board and the local community over the past year for proper consultation, he said.

There were many other issues that needed to be worked through as a consequence of the closure, such as increased parking in surrounding streets, the future of The Bunker – home to the Devonport Folk Music Club – and what happened to the water reservoirs under the

summit, Cohen said.

Asked if he supported or rejected the ban on vehicles on the summit, Cohen said: “Put it this way, in living memory the only accident on the mountain road that I can recall is that of a cyclist hitting a pedestrian There has been none involving cars.”

The Devonport Folk Music Club has long thought the consultation over the closure was insignificant. “It usually consists of the Maunga Authority coming to tell us what is going to happen,” said folk club chief Roger Giles.

Members of social media group Devonport Locals also seem upset at the development. A poll on the site suggests most would like to see the summit remain open to cars.

•As part of the summit car ban, parking spaces at the Kerr St entrance to the maunga will have time limits enforced from 1 April to help ensure all visitors have equal parking opportunities.

People who have limited mobility and are unable to walk to the summit, and the drivers of people with limited mobility, can contact Auckland Council on the day of their visit to obtain an access code for the barrier arm at the summit road entrance.

Survey of mountain users after closure to vehicles announced Locals were left perplexed last Sunday when a Maunga Authority survey of uses of the Takarunga/Mt Victoria mountain was being conducted just days after it announced the summit would be closed to cars.

Nothing unusual in that, according to the authority. A spokesman told the Flagstaff that it was conducting visitor experience surveys on several Auckland mountains.

Of the 17 questions on the survey, 15 were unrelated to the pedestrianisation of Takuranga/Mt Victoria.

“Each of the questions are designed to provide us with the specific insights into all areas of visitation of Takarunga.

“We will be conducting the same survey with the same questions a year from now to give us good comparative data,” the spokesman said.

Bunker in danger of closing Moves to pedestrianise Takarunga/ Mt Victoria could force the closure of folk-music institution The Bunker says long-time Devonport Folk Music Club leader, Roger Giles.

He hoped the Maunga Authority, which now administers the mountain, would give The Bunker a key code to open the gates for its Monday night sessions.

The folk club has operated out of The Bunker for more than 50 years.

Speaking at the Folk in the Park event on Sunday at Windsor Reserve, Giles encouraged patrons to go to the mountain that day and fill out a survey about usage being conducted by the authority.

Pedestrianisation would “kill the Devonport Folk Club…it would be the end of the Bunker.”

If members could not get access to the mountain it was likely they may have to park as far away as New World car park. They would find it near impossible to walk from there to The Bunker with musical instruments and equipment.

Giles said the Maunga Authority consultation with the folk club had effectively been to tell them the mountain was going to be closed Under threat… Roger Giles seeking support for the Devonport to cars.

ThE NAVy COmmuNiTy NEwSLETTER NAVy ASSiSTS wiTh RECENT RESCuES Rescues in Waitangi and Auckland were the focus of recent activities for personnel in the Royal New Zealand Navy.

In late January, an Auckland skipper was grateful for the Navy’s quick response after he sent out a Mayday distress call near Whangaparaoa Peninsula.

Three people on board a recreational fishing boat were in trouble when the engine developed a fault. The anchor wouldn’t take and an easterly breeze and one-metre swell was steadily taking them towards the rocks off Tiritiri Matangi Island.

HMNZS Te Mana was conducting safety and training exercises in the vicinity and was able to respond quickly to the call for help.

“It was a very welcome relief,” said the boat skipper.” I think we would have been far more frantic if we hadn’t already seen Te Mana at a distance and then we saw her coming towards us – that was a really stirring sight. What kept us calm was knowing she was there.”

Te Mana kept in close communication with the boaties and sent a RHIB to help.

The Auckland Coastguard also arrived to tow the boat to safety.

At Waitangi, a Navy reservist’s quick commandeering of a yacht club motorboat helped save a teenager from drowning.

On the Sunday before Waitangi Day, Chief Petty Officer Master At Arms (CPO MAA) John Burridge, also a senior constable with the Police Maritime Unit, was acting as a Police Liaison Officer for the Waitangi commemorations. He received a call that three teenagers, who had been jumping from Waitangi bridge, were being swept out in a rip.

The third rescue was of a 64-yearold woman with a fractured leg, from Great Barrier Island.

Offshore Patrol Vessel HMNZS Wellington was sent to the island 100 kilometres northeast of central Auckland last week, following a request from St John New Zealand.

The patient was taken to Devonport Naval Base, where an ambulance was on standby to transfer her to hospital. A St John paramedic was on board HMNZS Wellington to assist the patient en route to Devonport.

St John District Operations Manager Doug Gallagher said his organisation was thankful to the NZDF for helping evacuate the patient as weather conditions prevented then using other options.

Having fun outside the classroom A Co-curricular Expo, mainly aimed at Year 9s and 10s, and other students who have just joined the big Takapuna Grammar family, was held on Wednesday February 7th, in the refurbished Te Poho, next to M Block.

The event showcased the more than 100 cocurricular clubs and activities from sports, to performing arts, hobby groups and academic clubs that are run at the school. Many of these groups and clubs are entirely student run, such as the TED X Club, with all having a teacher to oversee events and provide support. Some are teacher led, like the Philosophy Club and the Journalism Club The students were able to sign up for the clubs that interest them, with senior students in charge of the stands, providing information, explanations and details about being in each club. The general turnout was great, and the hall was packed with people. The sign-up sheets were full and the students were clearly enthusiastic to begin some new adventures.

Katherine Jacobs and Harvey Merton both gained scholarships in all five subjects, putting them in the top 50 students in the country. For Harvey, this included an Outstanding scholarship in Biology.

covered themselves in glory. Mitchell Cuthbert was awarded four scholarships, while Aoke Jiang, gained three. Dougal Burden also gained three, with one being an Outstanding for History.

Halim Hoskin, Ella Johnson, Emilly Fan, Seongsuh (Annabel) Kim, and Poppy Ross each gained two.

Overall 41 of our students gained a total of 61 scholarships, with four at Outstanding.

Two energetic students, John Mottram and Kate Lee, spent the last couple of weeks of their summer holidays residing at the University of Auckland’s O’Rorke Hall and learning about science. However, little did these local TGS students know that it was much more than just “a nerd camp”, but a place of ceaseless laughter, firm friendships and a brilliant bonding experience.

O’Rorke Hall was a very promising and comfortable facility, housing each student with a single bedroom. There were numerous communal areas, such as the common rooms on each floor, outdoor BBQ picnic area and the infamous volleyball court -- which soon became the epicentre of lively competition between the teams.

Each morning began at 6:30 am, with a large whiteboard presenting the detailed schedule of the day ahead. This involved the frantic juggling of participating in an intense early morning activity such as aerobics, devouring breakfast and washing up -- all before the 8:40 am assemble.

The six coloured teams rotated through 14 different modules from 9am12pm, and after a fulfilling lunch, the second module ran from 2pm-5pm. A particularly enticing module was Engineering, where robot cars came to “life” and escaped a maze through Boolean logic.

“The Forum was much more than I had imagined. One of the highlights was the Chemistry module, where we conducted lots of experiments not possible to be done at school…” beamed John.

An impressive dinner was always served after the lengthy modules.

However, this was still not the last agenda of the day. There was always a different evening activity planned, some of which included technology visits, recreational activities or volleyball competitions.

“Choosing to attend the forum was probably the best decision made in my life so far. It really brought out each and every student’s passion and fascination for science. It was a purely unforgettable experience and is still gravely missed today,” shared Kate.

Not only were the modules a great indicator of the forum’s success, but

it was also the lifelong friendships that formed between like-minded and thriving individuals. The forum was a magical experience where the initial 174 nationwide strangers became, in the end, a tight-knit family immersed in a rich atmosphere of team spirit, shared success and camaraderie.

Local sailors win multiple national titles in one weekend Four local sailors won national titles during the February 9-11 regatta weekend on the North Shore.

Paul Snow-Hanson (with crew Daniel Willcox) won the New Zealand 470 Class National Championship, held at the Takapuna Boating Club.

Logan Dunning Beck (with crew Oscar Gunn) won the 49er national title at the 49er and 49er FX National Championships, hosted by Murrays Bay Sailing Club.

And in the multi-class regatta in the senior classes at Wakatere Boating Club, Derek Snow won in the Farr 3.7 nationals and Bruce Curson in the Waszp class. Hauraki Corner sailor Dan Slater came second in the OK Dinghy National Championships at the same regatta.

In Dunedin, father-and-son team Andrew and Cam Brown also won a national title, taking out the Sunburst National Championships for the fifth year in a row.

The Birkenhead sailors are long-time Wakatere members.

Wakatere commodore Simon Probert says while the weekend was dominated by awful weather, there was a lot of excellent sailing off Narrow Neck.

He was particularly proud of the senior sailors.

“And Bruce is a pretty talented highperformance specialist,” Probert says.

Curson, who learned to sail at Wakatere in the late 1980s, won the WASZP title despite being unable to complete the last race. “I was taken out by another competitor, made a request for redress and was given my average points. It was very close,” he says.

February 23, 2018 Snow-Hansen was happy with the weekend as well: “I must say that while Dan and I won all our races, it was most exciting for me to watch Dad win his nationals this weekend. It’s a competitive fleet and he isn’t the youngest one in it.”

Dunning Beck found the 49er nationals highly competitive. “They were close to the end and then the races on Sunday were abandoned twice due to strong winds. But we won three out of our five races, so that was it. There were no dramas, just good racing,” he says.

Probert says organising four national championships (WASZP, Farr 3.7, OK Dinghy and A-Class) in one multi-class senior sailing event for the first time had been a stroke of genius by the club.

“For one, because the individual senior classes tend to get a bit overlooked. But also, with 20-30 sailors in each class, it gets harder and harder to find enough volunteers to run a national event,” he says.

“This way we had about 100 sailors here all weekend; a fantastic social atmosphere at the club.”

He hopes the multi-class event will become a blueprint for future seniorclass regattas. It was also a good practice run for Wakatere. The club will host the OK Dinghy World Championships in February 2019. “It will be the club’s first time to ever hold a world championship,” says Probert.
