Secret meeting over housing development “a disgrace”

Local residents concerned about the fasttracking of development at Bayswater marina protested their exclusion from a behind-closeddoors council meeting.

The status of Bayswater marina as a potential Special Housing Area (SHA) was likely to have been on the agenda of The Devonport-Takapuna Local Board’s extraordinary meeting held to discuss SHAs in the area.

But locals were excluded, calling the process “dictatorial”, “undemocratic” and “a disgrace.”

In an hour-long public forum preceding the meeting, residents repeatedly asked for the meeting to be opened to the public. A motion – by board member Grant Gillon and seconded by Jan O’Connor – to let the public in, failed.

The Devonport-Takapuna Local Board had called the meeting to discuss Tranche 4 (SHA)

applications in preparation for an Auckland Development Committee meeting the next morning.

Twenty locals attended the meeting and many voiced their concerns about being kept in the dark on what was happening in their community.

Bayswater Community Committee chair Gay Richards said considering Bayswater marina as an SHA flew in the face of public consultation.

Survey on Bayswater marina development under review A complaint in relation to a recent Colmar Brunton poll that claimed 70% of Bayswater residents were in favour of residential development of Bayswater marina land is under review by The Research Association of New Zealand.

The unexplained death of a young Navy man, whose body was found at Winscombe Cove last month, is still under investigation according to family members.

The deceased man has been named as Lynton Robert McInnes. His family has released a statement and are appealing for help from the public.

Police undertook an extensive scene examination but have since refused to provide any information on the case, except for releasing the deceased man’s name after requests from the Flagstaff.

The Navy is also not commenting as the death occurred outside Navy property and is therefore a police matter.

But the family statement said: “The Navy have been very supportive and are answering any questions that the police have and providing as much information as they can.”

Devonport teenager takes online Shakespeare to the globe

Much to do about talent… Harriett Maire is going viral with Shakespeare adaptation A Devonport actress stars in a video blog adaptation of a Shakespearean play that is making waves on the international stage.

Harriet Maire plays Beatrice in the web series Nothing Much to Do, a 60-part modernised version of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. The vlog (video blog) was recently featured on hellogiggles.com, a website co-founded by US actress Zooey Deschanel, and is showing signs of going viral.

Each week, about five minutes of vlog are released via YouTube. The first episode had over 16,000 hits. So far 23 episodes are online for viewing.

Maire (19) has undertaken classical Shakespeare training. Last year she spent six weeks in an acting workshop at London’s Globe Theatre.

“But I just love the way Shakespeare has been modernised for this project. It proves the relevance he still has. The play is about 450 years old and you can take the plot line, put it into a modern context and it still makes sense because he understood humans on such a deep level,” she says.

A blog is the great way to explore the play’s characters, says Maire. “Because you follow a life it makes the character

come alive too, as if they are real people,” she says. Beatrice even has her own Twitter account with more than 300 followers.

Social media allows fans to interact with the play, Maire says. “Some send us playlists of music they think our character might like, or beautiful artwork featuring us.

Sometimes, they create fan-fiction and take the plot into another direction. Most of them know the play really well and just spend a lot of time loving us,” she says.

Fellow Devonport actor Jake McGregor plays Benedick, Beatrice’s arch nemesis.

He has his own vlog, called Benaddicktion, where 16 vlogs offer a different perspective on the plot.

Prominent pohutukawa felled

Before and after… a Pohutukawa that took decades to grow was gone within a day Only metres from two protected Stanley Bay pohutukawa trees, a mature specimen has been legally felled without requiring council consent.

Upset neighbours contacted the Flagstaff on the day the four-storey high tree in the backyard of 19 Glen Road was being chopped down. The property had recently been sold.

Council spokesperson Therese Sutherland said the mature pohutukawa was not a

scheduled tree and therefore did not require council consent to be cut down. The local blanket tree protection has not been in effect since December 2012 and now only registered trees require consent to be cut or pruned.

The Flagstaff understands the reason for removing the tree was because its roots were causing damage to the villa’s foundations. No building consent had been lodged for the address.

The tree was part of a small glade of established trees in Stanley Bay. Devonport Heritage architect Jeremy Salmond and environmentalist Dame Anne Salmond live across the street and a huge protected pohutukawa frames their front garden. The driveway adjacent to 19 Glen Road features another protected, slightly smaller specimen.

Neither the property’s new owners nor the Salmonds could be reached for comment before the Flagstaff went to print.

Second world champs bronze for promising sailor

Seaworthy winners… Markus Somerville (centre) alongside sailing partner Isaac McHardie as they received bronze medals at ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship in Tavira, Portugal Devonport sailor Markus Somerville has won a bronze medal for the second time in the 29er two-man skiff at the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship in Portugal.

He and sailing partner Isaac McHardie also won bronze a year ago at the youth worlds in Cyprus. In between they also won two national competitions, in England and New Zealand.

Markus (17) is in his last year at Takapuna Grammar School. He has been sailing competitively since the age of 11, starting out in

the Opimist class at Wakatere Boating Club based at Narrow Neck Beach.

At the worlds in Portugal,conditions on and off the water had been less than ideal in the seaside town of Tavira.

“I had been at the Takapuna Grammar School ball the night before we left and came down with the flu the next day. I spent the first three days in Portugal in bed and lost five kgs,” Markus says.

“But we started off with a bang, winning

the first race,” he days.

“We didn’t know the Mediterranean wind conditions, which we had not often sailed before, so we dropped a bit after that, but were very consistent. Our worst race, which we could drop, was eighth,” he says.

After his success in the youth classes, Markus is eyeing up the 49er, an Olympic class, two-handed dinghy. He is currently looking for a new sailing partner and has his sights set on the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

Important differences in e-cigarettes says convert To the editor of last issue’s Flagstaff article about the teens “dealing e-cigarettes”.

I’m a Devonport father of two, aged 12 and 16, and have been a strong smoker for the past 22 years. A few months ago, my 16-year-old convinced me to convert to e-cigarettes. After many hours of research, I found that these electronic shisha pens contain no harmful

toxins such as nicotine, tar, tobacco or carbon monoxide. They are in fact purely flavoured water vapour that are 70% Glycerol, a harmless compound found in many foods as a sweetener and contains no sugar.

I believe the article over exaggerated the danger of the products and confused these flavoured water vapour pens for actual elec-

tronic cigarettes that include nicotine.

However I feel as though there is a level of maturity needed to use any product that promotes smoking. On the other hand kids these days are well informed about the danger of abusing any substance and should be allowed to make their own decisions on the topic.

“Protestors” show lack of respect to the fallen Last night (4 Aug) whilst driving home at approx 17:50pm, I turned into Victoria Rd and the sight I saw stunned me. There, at the Devonport Cenotaph was a large group of antiwar protesters picketing the Cenotaph.

Why am I so incensed, freedom of speech and all that...? Well I’ll tell you why.

casualty rate where we lost 16,697 fathers, uncles, brothers, sons and nephews. Another 41,317 were wounded and returned forever changed. Because of these brave and courageous souls we enjoy the freedom we do today.

Then there’s WWII, the Korean War, Vietnam, Afghanistan etc.. Then there’s our current serving personnel and family who are killed, whilst serving to protect NZ and guard these freedoms, every day of the week 24/7 a day yep that’s right even Christmas Day. Let me be clear here, this wasn’t a group of radical youths - this was mainly a group of middle-aged women - most who would have likely lost someone in conflict. Their signs were highly inflammatory and offensive.

When did we lose the notion of being thankful or respectful?

I worked for the RNZN for almost five years. I have friends currently deployed on operational service and many of my friends are current serving personnel, ex-service personnel, some retired personnel with 40+ years of service. I’m grateful to all of them for their service.

In the last 10 years I’ve been to many a fu-

neral of both serving personnel and ex-service personnel and I remember them every Anzac Day at the Devonport Cenotaph. I view this protest as a desecration of a sacred site where we pay our respects to our fallen heroes. It is a place of peace - it is NOT a place for protest, EVER! It’s akin to peeing on someone’s grave and if I did that to one of their relatives I’m sure they’d be just as insulted as I am.

The Cenotaph is a place to be respected, where we remember our fallen heroes and be thankful for their brave service. Where we remember them and honour them. Without their sacrifice and service we would not have the freedoms that we do today.

Rates increases much larger than 3% for many Devonport and Shore residents Shore residents will be opening their rates statements this week with some alarm as many face increases in the $800-$1,000 range. The Mayor’s 2.5-3.5% average is a joke as business differentials reduce, placing hefty increases on residential ratepayers, who in reality face huge, even 10% increases.

To add to the insult, many Shore projects that were funded in North Shore City days are now on the chopping block to save this frivolous council: Devonport Marine Square boardwalk and the Torpedo Bay walkway for example.

The more appropriate projects that should be slashed are the hugely expensive yet unbudgeted, ill-described, so-called ‘transformation’ projects. The council’s numerous Special Housing Areas (SHAs) will also attract massive growth that will need to be

funded by local boards, as development contributions end up in the regional slush fund rather than being spent on local infrastructure. So we could be in the situation where local developers pay towards a reserve and yet the funding goes into central coffers, not benefitting the locals who have to deal with the extra growth pressures.

Perhaps this dodgy drive for extra Council funding is the real reason SHAs are being rushed through without proper consultation or planning.

I predict that any political party that advocates an ‘independent’ northern local authority in this year’s elections will find rich pickings in Rodney and the North Shore.

Dykman adds nothing to debate I am writing to express my concern at the Flagstaff’s continued publishing of correspondence by Ron Dykman and am surprised that his latest missive was considered worthy of publication.

It contains false allegations (to the point of being defamatory) and is sprinkled with inaccuracies, which make for unpleasant reading when the rest of the paper contains good news stories, stories of sporting and cultural success and of community interest.

I’ve worked in countries where oppression and censorship have crushed freedom of speech, but there comes a limit that good taste and moderate thought can stand. In my opinion, Mr Dykman has gone well beyond that limit and it is time for the Flagstaff to exercise some censorship.

Please do not continue to publish Mr Dykman’s correspondence - he adds nothing to any thoughtful or constructive debate and wastes good column inches that could be filled with much more pleasant offerings.

Instead they demonstrate their community concern by the installation of spy cameras, judder bars, silly speed signs …. the list goes on!

Dykman calls for the reintroduction of captial punishment as an appropriate retribution for the politicians’ secretive, nonconsultative behaviour. Bit harsh, really. Far more appropriate would be a series of public floggings followed by a spell in the stocks to take place near the site of the plaque that commemorates Devonport’s last hanging.

Three times lucky in Devonport

The face of a new country… for almost two decades Carole Derbyshire helped new immigrant children settle at Belmont Primary Giving back to the community… Alan Taylor has spent his retirement years in Devonport, largely helping others

Blessed with a mischievous sense of humour and a sharp mind, three-time Devonport resident and Korean War veteran Alan Taylor just celebrated his 87th birthday and the 61st anniversary of the Korean War Armistice. He spoke to Maire Vieth about his childhood in naval towns and returning full circle to Devonport.

Alan Taylor can’t seem to get Devonport out of his system. He has lived in Devonport three times – as a child, a teenager and later with his grown family.

Born on August 4, 1927 in England’s naval city of Portsmouth, he celebrated his first Christmas on Calliope Rd. His English father worked in the Royal Navy and was posted to New Zealand for the next five years.

Taylors’s early Devonport memories are around his Airedale Terrier Roy, who pulled his pram up the hill from Stanley Bay beach and who helped him sneak biscuits from a friendly neighbour. He also remembers driving to Napier shortly after the 1931 earthquake. “Eskale Drive was down and we had to drive across the railway lines. There were sheep with their backsides all burned running around,” he says.

In 1932, on Taylor’s fifth birthday, the family returned to England on the ocean passenger liner RMS Rangitata via the Panama Canal and lived at his grandmother’s house in London, opposite Holloway Prison for women.

They moved back to Portsmouth and Taylor started school. “I was always in trouble. The girl sitting in front of me had plaits and once I tied them on the top rail of her chair on either side. Another time, I slipped a grass snake down the back of

her neck,” he says. Taylor adds that he was caned regularly though.

He received a scholarship to attend the local grammar school but was evacuated in August 1939, as the British government closed all schools in the city in the lead-up to the war and children were moved to country areas.Taylor’s father had been posted on a ship in the Far East since 1938 and his mother stayed in Portsmouth.

Taylor remembers the time with a sense of adventure. “Our school took over an old school in Sparsholt that had been shut down. We were put in the empty swimming pool. There was a pile of straw in the corner and some sacks, which we had to fill, and they were our beds. At night we could see the stars through the glass roof above it,” he says.

Taylor and his class were moved several times during the early war years. He hated the regular gas-mask drills and still hates the smell of rubber because of them. He recalls sharing a boarding house with fifth formers.

“During air raids we used to go and hide underneath the stairs and the senior boys would teach us chess until the air raids were over, which sometimes wasn’t until after midnight,” he says.

After the Battle of Dunkirk in 1940, the adventures took on another element of reality. Taylor and his classmates helped their

August 22 2014 headmaster bury food at the bottom of the school’s garden, expecting the Germans to invade. “Our beaches were barbed-wired, but we still managed to get through and go swimming sometimes,” he says. Walking a dog on the beach one day, Taylor failed to hear an air-raid siren before he saw objects fall out of a plane. “It was only the spent cartridge cases falling down, but it gave me a big fright,” he says.

When Taylor was 13 he and his mother moved back to New Zealand, travelling on the RMS Rangitata. “We were in a convoy at sea – speeding up or slowing down to avoid torpedoes – when one hit another boat. I remember going out on deck and seeing it all lit up. It was taking 500 children to Canada but they all survived in lifeboats,” he says.

In 1942, Taylor’s father followed and the family moved into a flat at 4 Old Lake Road. “I had my own horse. Woodall Park was a paddock and a man from the council had two cows on it and we paid him a little bit of money to let Tony (his horse) graze,” he says.

“On Sundays, two local girls and I would ride up Lake Rd to the North Shore Riding Club, which was where the hospital is now.

“Other horses were kept where Belmont Primary School is today. We had lots of fun,” he says.

Taylor graduated from Takapuna Grammar School in 1946 and signed up with Auckland’s Youth Farm Settlement Board and became a farm cadet, receiving a suspensory loan of £200. He liked the first farmer he worked for in Opotiki, who made sure the cadets had one Sunday off a month.

After a bad accident with caustic acid, Taylor returned to his parents’ home (now on Merani St) and was treated by a doctor who had specialised in burns during the war.

When he returned to farming, Taylor shifted south of Te Awamutu, where the farmer didn’t like tractors. “We would do all our farm work with horses. I learned how to drive five abreast” he says.

His next farm was at Te Miro, just outside Cambridge: a year on 32 acres of “back and bush country” behind Lake Rotomahana.

In 1952, Taylor volunteered for the Korean War, lured by a £5,000 government loan. “I thought with that and my other £200, I could set myself up quite nicely as a dairy farmer, so I tottled off to war,” he says.

I was an artillery driver operator. One night a small bear rustled close by and frightened us a bit, and at times we would find placards telling us to go home put up right next to our trench in the morning. But that was about it,” he says.

He returned in 1956, aged 23. A series of fainting spells ended his dream of farming and brought him back to Devonport. Taylor started work in a soil mechanics lab for Auckland’s city council, testing the strength of soil and concrete for road construction.

He met his future wife Joan (an artist) and he enrolled in the army to earn more money.

Taylor was posted to Papakura, where the couple moved to and raised three children.

In 1964, Taylor helped train the first unit of soldiers who went to fight in Vietnam.

Kidney problems meant he had to stay at home.

In 1966, he was posted to Wellington with the army to work with computers that “were still the size of his living room”, he says.

In 1979, Taylor retired from the army as a Major and went on to work for the Department of Statistics in Auckland.

“I ran their computer division, or tried to, until I was 60 and they kicked me out,” he jokes. He and Joan were back in Devonport and glad to live close to their elderly parents.

Taylor has now been retired for 27 years.

Some of that time, he and Joan spent sailing on a small yacht. “Then I became what I call ballast,” he says.

Today Taylor teaches people aged over 50 at Bayswater’s SeniorNet how to use a computer, “even though I am quite a bit older than them,” he laughs.

He is also an active member at Devonport’s Anglican Holy Trinity Church.

Taylor also volunteers at the Museum of Transport and Technology in Western Springs on Wednesday mornings.

“We converted a Lancaster four-engine bomber the French used after the war for maritime surveillance into what it would have looked like in 1944,” he says.

He gets around mostly by car, or on his electrical bike, that replaced the series of British motorbikes he owned in his younger years.

Taylor is a member of New Zealand’s RSA, K-Force and Royal Artillery Association. An Englishman who fought for New Zealand in Korea and has lived here for most of his life, does he call himself a Kiwi or an Englishman these days?

“I guess I am a New Zealander by osmosis, but I have never done anything about it.

So it depends a bit on who I am talking to.

Bayswater survey misleading and biased I was pleased to read your article on the Bayswater marina survey and the complaint laid by Jodi Letica.

I too was phoned as part of the survey and found it to be extremely misleading and very biased. Of course residents would want more playgrounds, improved access to water and new rowing club facilities. The questions were asked with no context or opportunity to offer feedback.

BIS fundraising hits its stride

A suburban orienteering race across the Devonport peninsula is the latest innovation in school fundraising.

The August 31 event is being jointly organised by Belmont Intermediate School (BIS) Parent Teacher Association and Auckland Orienteering.

It is the brainchild of BIS PTA chair Michelle Millington, who says it is a family event open to all ages and abilities.

“My husband and kids and I participated in a rogaine at Riverhead recently and we just

had the best time together. As a parent helper at the Orienteering Zone Day in Long Bay Regional Park, the feedback from the school kids was the same. They said it was the best Zone Day ever,” she says.

Millington contacted Auckland Orienteering and asked if the school could run an orienteering event locally and managed to enlist the club as the event’s co-organiser, providing maps, electronic chips and orange/white flags at the control points.

“We are basically trying to find a different

After the race, parents will hand out prizes, and put on a food alley and games to finish the day off.

BIS Principal Nick Hill plans to compete on the day as part of a team of teachers.

“After that, I will help serve food after the race. This is something a bit different and I hope it will bring lots of locals to our school for the day,” Hill says.

Millington adds: “The event is not so much about speed or raising money, but more about having a go and learning about the sport of orienteering.”

This July, a New Zealand orienteering team competed in the Junior World Orienteering Champs in Bulgaria, where Kiwi Tim Robertson won the sprint competition on a 3.7 km course through the parks and streets of Samokov.

The board requested that council’s governing body “delegate to local boards the power to make objections on alcohol licence applications under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012,” and said it would only make objection “in instances of significant community concern about an application.”

The board wants information about liquor licence applications to be more easily accessible than it currently is.

It also asked that its view on any application be attached to the report sent to the District Licensing Committee.

Peace vigil honours war dead

Peace vigil at Devonport war memorial Around 50 people attended a peace vigil at the Devonport war memorial to mark the anniversary of the beginning of World War 1.

Devonport Peace Group spokesperson Ruth Coombes said the vigil was to commemorate all the victims of this war, including noncombatants and those who opposed the war.

Organised nationally by Peace Movement Aotearoa, the attendees included Women’s International League For Peace and Freedom (WILPF), Pax Christie, Society of Friends (Quakers), Devonport Peace group and community members including Devonport-

Takapuna Local Board member Grant Gillon and Keith Locke, a former Green Party MP. Coombes said the vigils across the country had three main themes: “Remember all the casualties of war, ending war as a response to conflict and work to promote peace in every way we can.”

“The message honour the war dead by ending war, encapsulates these messages.

“We urge those to remember that peace is not just the space between wars, but an opportunity to work towards ensuring it never happens again,” said Coombes.

School bus improvements made but not enough to satisfy mothers Local complaints over bus overcrowding have been heeded to a degree with Auckland Transport (AT) making numerous changes to services.

But local mums Liz Cannon and Lisa Clementson say complaints from children and parents keep streaming in and that AT’s changes have either not been implemented or have had no effect.

Two months ago, Cannon and Clementson launched a media and political campaign against overcrowded local school buses, asking that council provide one seat per child on public school buses in the name of safety.

In a list of newly implemented safety measures, AT stopped short of this.

Instead, they have implemented stopping restrictions for Takapuna Grammar and Westlake afternoon school buses to Stanley Bay, lines 082 and 087 respectively, says AT spokesperson Mark Hannan.

On the first day of term 3, Takapuna Grammar students were given a note saying the 082 bus would no longer stop before Calliope Road due to overcrowding. Students who get off earlier now have to use the 017, 080, 083 or 087 lines, the note says.

AT also said they had added buses and upsized others along some lines, and would

ensure that rear doors will no longer be used on school trips.

“School buses are still allowed to have people standing, but the latest changes will minimise the numbers. Where students need to stand, they are encouraged to move down the bus and not to congregate around doors,” Hannan says.

David Tribe, AT Bus Services Support Manager, said in an email to the mothers: “We now consider that we have addressed these concerns and have now closed the file.”

However Clementson and Cannon say there has been little substantive change and that the file needs to stay open. They claim buses are still not stopping to pick up waiting children, rear doors are still in use, the stopping restrictions are not in effect and random adults have been allowed on the school bus.

“And some parents’ complaints have not been responded to,” they say.

AT’s proposed changes do not get to the heart of the safety issue that concerns them, the pair maintain.

“New Zealand is out of date with safety protocols for school buses, which is something that needs addressing on a legislative level,” says Clementson.

In his day job, Iain Sharp is a manuscripts librarian in the Sir George Grey Special Collections at Auckland Library. He is well known as a reviewer, writer and poet and he has authored two books.

Which paints/oils/stains will protect my house, but not harm the environment?

This is a question that concerns not only home owners, but is also of great concern to New Zealand’s paint manufacturers and to Eco-Decorators like John Bisset Ltd. Paints are manufactured using a wide range of organic and inorganic materials, some of which can impact greatly on the environment.

Solvent-borne products in particular release more VOC [Volatile Organic Compounds] into the environment than waterborne products.

Dulux, Wattyl and Resene all produce waterborne enamels, which are low odour and have low amounts of VOC. Some acrylic paints are also available in a VOC-free version.

Trim, joinery and wet areas were once considered areas that could not be effectively coated in waterborne paints. It was thought that only solvent-based paints would give the surface appropriate protection.

With the introduction of waterborne enamels, this is now not the case. These new waterborne enamels give excellent protection to the painted surface, without harming the environment.

Stains also come as either oil-based or water-based. The type of surface the stain is being applied to and the exposure to the elements etc, will determine which type of stain is best to use.

Oils like Drydens Oil, manufactured in New Zealand, are a speciality timber coating product that protect timber without hiding the natural grain. These are environmentally sound products and are recognised as such.

Former Devonport Primary School (DPS) principal Shirley Hardcastle practically danced out of the door at a special assembly during her last week at school.

“I am leaving the Irish way, which is celebrating rather than crying,” she told the Flagstaff on August 8, her final day at the school.

Since then, Deputy Principal Bruce Tilby has handed in his resignation as well. After ten years at DPS, in 2015 he will become principal of Orewa North Primary School.

Meanwhile he is stepping in as DPS Acting Principal until a replacement for Hardcastle has been appointed.

Earlier in the year, Deputy Principal Kay Lowe left DPS to take up a position at the Ministry of Education. Her role has since

been filled by Lesley Brewer, who was previously a dean at St Cuthbert’s College Junior School.

The DPS Board of Trustees sent a letter to parents last week, saying three senior staff leaving the school in such a short space of time was “something to be proud of.”

Nick Thomas, the board’s chairman said: “Shirley and Kay have both been headhunted for senior positions within the Ministry and ERO respectively, and Bruce has been appointed to a great position that better suits his own lifestyle choices. These three are excellent examples of the quality of staff Devonport Primary School has been able to develop over the years, and presents an opportunity for us to forge a new chapter in the story of Devonport Primary School,”

Diane was well known as a businesswoman and volunteer Diane Carter (nee Gillibrand), who passed away peacefully at home July 21, was well known in Devonport.

She was owner of The Barber Shop for many years and, as a member of the Devonport Business Association and the local residents and ratepayers group was active in the community and lobbied for change.

Diane was born in Grey Lynn, on 15 November 1932, to Tom and Connie Gillibrand, (a railwayman and homemaker) and was the youngest of three children.

When the children were still young the family moved to Whangarei. After attending Whangarei Girls High School, Diane pursued her dream and became an apprentice hairdresser to Norma Ross, who ran one of Whangarei’s most prestigious salons. Norma was Diane’s business mentor and role model.

Diane also became involved in indoor basketball as both a player and administrator.

Always glamorous and stylish, in her younger days Diane was greatly admired for her long legs and high stilettos (some of her friends blame her for their lifelong obsession with shoes).

Diane married George Carter and became mother to daughters Jaye and Sheridan.

Diane continued in hairdressing and eventually owned a successful salon in Whangarei called My Fair Lady. She was an early member of Zonta and worked hard to support women and girls in the local community. Diane was committed to the goals of Zonta throughout her life, envisioning a future “in which women’s rights are recognised as human rights and every woman is able to achieve her full potential”.

The cut and thrust of politics was another great passion and Diane was a campaigner for the Labour Party over many years.

In the barbershop…Diane Carter (nee Gillibrand) 1932-2014 In the 1970s she divorced George, sold My Fair Lady and moved to Auckland to be near her daughters. Diane found her way back into hairdressing and by the mid 1980s was the owner of The Barber Shop in Devonport’s Victoria Rd. She was very much a local character along with her team of Spence Buchanan and Sandra Damiris.

In the early 1990s Diane sold The Barber Shop to Sandra and returned to Whangarei to care for her elderly mother Connie. Connie passed away in 1994 and in 1999 Carter moved back to Auckland and bought a cottage in Bayswater. Over the last few years she was busy renovating her cottage and growing a beautiful garden, odd-jobbing as a hairdresser, being an active parishioner at St Michael’s Church in Bayswater, and volunteering at the church’s St Peter’s opp shop.

Family remember the strength Diane showed in the face of many odds during her life. Her ever-present smile and easy laugh, her compassion and support for the many people who came within her sphere, especially the young, and her ability and willingness to give without asking for anything in return, all add up to the person she was.

Others will remember the calibre of Diane’s friendship; her kindness; her love of gardening and the beautiful gardens she grew wherever she lived; her lifelong enjoyment of books and reading; her eye for nice things especially curios found in antique and secondhand shops; her sense of hospitality and pleasure in entertaining family and friends; her laughter, good humour and bonhomie.

Diane is survived by daughters Jaye and Sheridan, and grandchildren Josh and Gabrielle.

Devonport Arts Festival fun starts now Building up to the Devonport Arts Festival locals have a chance to get involved and show off their creative talents now.

Festival organiser Toni Van Tonder says: “We need people’s help to dress up Victoria Road with hand-made bunting flags.”

Van Tonder has developed a template for the flags (which should be about 35cm long and 25cm wide) and can be made of anything people can think of. “Flags can be knitted, made out of papier-mâché, cut from old lino, crocheted, collaged, painted, embroidered, woven from flax or produced any way you like,” she says.

All local schools have signed on to help with the project and it is hoped flags will string out along the length of Victoria Rd. A colourful day with hands-on demonstrations in painting, woodturning, pottery and stone carving, sprinkled with market stalls, roadside busking and kids yoga, plus community murals and graffiti art will kick off this year’s Devonport Arts Festival. The opening day will be centred around Windsor Reseve.

Badminton success again The undefeatable senior boys’ and girls’ badminton teams once again brought home the trophy for the 2014 NZCT Senior Secondary Schools Badminton League! With over 40 teams competing, both TGS teams achieved a tremendous result, winning every game of the season.

For the girls, this is the fourth year in a row, and it is a second win for the boys’ team. All the players agreed that “it was one of the best seasons we’ve played.”

“I’m glad we could defend the title again this year. Now I can leave Takapuna

Grammar with pride from this victorious memory,” said Keith, adding, “I hope this win will inspire the team next year to do even better.”

Coach Kiyoung Lee said, “I am very proud and happy for them. They trained hard and definitely deserved it.”

The players dedicated time in the mornings for training twice a week. Games were held at the North Harbour Badminton Centre with each contest consisting of singles and doubles matches.

NZ’s next top engineers Twenty aspiring, young engineers gathered on a Saturday in early August to participate in the annual New Zealand “Next Top Engineer” Competition, alongside 193 other teams from all over New Zealand.

This year the task was to approximate the cost to the aviation industry if Mt Taranaki was to erupt – a real-life problem that many engineers devote their lives to.

The students had to write up and send through a 10-page report before the 6pm deadline. The solutions ranged from the

price of an expensive car to millions of dollars.

It was an action-packed nine hours, with non-stop thinking. A student recalled, “It was a stressful but rewarding experience,” especially with the lure of a grand prize of $6000, and a guaranteed paid summer internship opportunity at Orion Health, Fonterra, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare or the Department of Engineering Science.

The art of barbershop Young Singers in Harmony (YSIH) exists to develop the art of barbershop and a cappella singing in New Zealand secondary schools. On top of organising workshops for coaches and students throughout the country, YSIH runs the annual national secondary school competition.

This year, the Auckland regional competition for Young Singers in Harmony was held at Birkenhead College in midJune. Quartets and barbershop groups from high schools around Auckland came to compete for the chance to perform at this year’s national competition, held in Wellington.

The day was absolutely spectacular for our TGS quartets, and the hard work throughout the year paid off. Our new girls’ quartet, The Feminims, came in third place at their very first barbershop competition, while the more experienced Foxy Pitches took out first place!

Let’s go on a tough adventure For the second time in our history, the adventure racing team has qualified for the toughest event available to students.

At its core, adventure racing is a non-stop, mixed gender, timed event that combines two or more disciplines; involving teamwork and advanced navigation, using a map and compass.

The TGS team: Adam Rundle, David Sorrenson, Aidan Nicholas, Robin Charlotte-Green, Tessa McNair, Lily MacDonald, Bridget McArthur and Ellie Cowan, trained together three or four times per week, prior to the event.

Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland held the three national qualifiers this year.

Only two out of 30 teams qualified from the Auckland event for the national final.

In the lead up to the event a general location was given a few weeks before, but the exact start point was only revealed to participants on the day of the race, maintaining that element of adventure and the unexpected. Together, through the slippery mud, forest and sand, the team competed in a mountain-bike time trial, a three-hour rogaine and puzzling team challenges. The day consisted of extremely strenuous physical activity as

well as mental toughness.

Adventure racing gives participants the chance to challenge themselves, to find their limits and push through them.

Racing often takes participants out of their comfort zone by challenging them with unfamiliar surroundings, physical and mental challenges and extreme weather conditions, often while sleepdeprived and physically exhausted.

How team members react to this as an

individual and as part of the team by supporting and helping their teammates will greatly affect the whole experience of the race.

The final, in March 2015, will be held at Tongariro National Park, in the snow. The team has until then to prepare by training at a whole new level. We all agree that we will need to be ten times stronger, ten times faster and ten times smarter.

Back to the Future is where Takapuna Grammar School’s annual fashion show is heading this month.

“We are celebrating our tenth anniversary looking back into the past and back over the years at TGS,” says Deborah Woodward, Head of Soft Technology and the teacher in charge of the show.

The annual fundraiser for Starship Hospital will feature New Zealand designer Hailwood, vintage couture from local shop Viva La Vintage, steampunk designs by Cogs and Compass, Frank Casey suits and garments designed by former TGS students currently studying fashion.

Student work will also be on the runway, with laser-cut dresses produced by Year 13 and Year 12 creations that reference 1960s pop culture. The ever popular Year 10 onesies and wearable art will also be on show.

All garments will be modelled by students and last week a group of girls tried out dresses and jewellery.

Erica aiming to climb to new heights

Belmont climber Erica Gatland won two New Zealand titles last weekend – in the lead-up to the World Youth Championships in New Caledonia in less than five weeks.

Erica won gold in the under-18 female lead climb and under-18 female bouldering events.

Her goal at the world youth champs is to beat all New Zealanders and Australians in her age group and to make it into the semi-finals.

“It is my first world champs and I want to be realistic. No Kiwi has ever won before and the best came something like 21st,” says the Year-12 Takapuna Grammar student.

At home, Erica is in a league of her own, winning just about every competition she enters.

Last year she also won the nationals, and the open and under-18 National Indoor Bouldering Series.

Erica qualified for the youth world champs last year. “New Zealand in the end didn’t send a team because there weren’t enough climbers.

This year there are 13 of us,” she says.

The competition at the youth worlds is tough, says Erica. “Northern hemisphere countries like the US, Japan or Europe are performing on a higher level usually,” she says.

Erica wants to change that. She hopes to inspire young Kiwis to follow her into the sport.

“I make sure that I am going to all the comps, even the regional ones because I am sort of a role model for the younger climbers, plus it is good training for me,” she says.

Heading to the world youth climbing champs… Erica Gatland sometimes adds another day outdoors, runs and does core training on her off-days. “I also try to eat well and just be in the best shape possible,” she says.

“The great thing about climbing is that it is always challenging, that there is always room to improve and that there are always new opportunities. And climbing outdoors just makes you feel great,” she says.

Erica’s long-term climbing plans will eventually take her away from the southern hemisphere.

“Next year I want to compete in the youth worlds in Italy and when I am done with school, I want to travel to the US and Europe and climb there. Outdoor climbing in places like that is where the sport is at when you get older,” she says.

Shore’s golden season continues with Under-85kg win North Shore Rugby Club celebrations continued this month with the Under-85kg team taking the North Harbour title - adding to the Premiers and Premier Reserves championships.

The Under-85s beat Takapuna 24-12 in the final to go through the 2014 season unbeaten in 16 games. It is the side’s fourth North Harbour Championship in five seasons.

Playing against the wind, Shore fell behind 12-0, but regrouped for an 8-12 half-time scoreline. The game was evenly placed until the 60th minute when captain Chris Bennett scored for Shore. Substitutions helped Shore in the last 15-20 minutes with an instant impact off the bench from 55-year-old Steve Hinchey who secured an important turnover. Ater an onslaught by the North Shore forwards, Travis Keane crossed beside the posts towards the end of the game to make it 24-12.

Coach Keane said the success of the side was based on a core bunch of older players and a new corp of younger members (Callum Chapman, Sam French, Olly Harper, Angus Dines, Scott Brentnall and Jaeden Geeshe.)
