ATM skimmers hit Devonport Fraudsters have hit Devonport, skimming the ANZ ATM machine.

ANZ spokesperson Stefan Herrick says the bank detected fraudulent use of some customers’ cards early last week. “While the compromise was detected and shut down quickly, some customers’ accounts were accessed,” he says.

“We have contacted those customers and are fully reimbursing them any funds that were taken. All other cards that had unsuccessful fraud attempts made on them have been reissued to our customers,” he says.

Herrick says the easiest way to protect yourself against skimming is to use your hand to cover the keypad while entering your PIN.

After the meeting, the Flagstaff contacted Devonport RSA President Chris Mullane, who said it was “a sad indictment indeed when flowers on Memorial Drive become the victim of cost-cutting during the anniversary years of two World Wars.”

Mullane added that as a Devonport citizen he was dismayed about the cost-cutting proposal. “The gardens lift your spirit, they add to our quality of life in the village, they make

an important statement about the friendly and welcoming nature of Devonport. I think we get considerably more joy and value out of them than the $15,000 they save council,” he says.

DTLB Chair Mike Cohen challenged Muir, saying he was bluffing and that his proposal tried to bully the board into using its own discretionary fund to pay for annuals. “If we pick up council services like this with our limited funds, we will eventually lose money to support the things they are there for, such as events and community development,” Cohen told the Flagstaff.

Board member Grant Gillon said the cuts should be a political decision and asked Muir for a copy of the Opex budget. “Maybe $2 miilion can be cut somewhere else,” Gillon said.

Kitchen craft takes poppy making to new level

My kitchen rules… Ruth Bramble Ruth Bramble’s Belmont kitchen has doubled as her art studio for the last four years.

This month she has been making dozens of ceramic poppies that were commissioned for Anzac Day celebrations.

Bramble says husband Gary is the cook in the family. But Ruth is busy in the kitchen as well. Silver spoons, kitchen knives, cookie cutters and pastry brushes help her shape ceramic art. Her poppy moulds are cereal bowls.

“I make almost everything with kitchen utensils. Ships, fish, chicken, hearts, fridge magnets and Christmas decorations,” she says. Bramble also has a pottery wheel in the basement, where she makes mugs and bowls. She doesn’t have a kiln yet though, and fires her creations in local potter Jengis Poor’s kiln on Clarence St.

Bramble says she was thrilled to be asked to make the poppies for the St Heliers Bay Village Association Anzac Day celebration.

Bramble, who trained as a nurse 20 years ago and works as a nurse in Newmarket four days a week, also has a couple of arts degrees. “I did a foundation year at Carmarthen College of Arts in South Wales straight after school and graduated with a degree in fashion and textiles from Nottingham Trent University.

But when the Brambles moved to the Scottish countryside, there weren’t a lot of jobs in fashion design on offer and Bramble retrained as a nurse.

In 2003, Bramble signed up for a ceramics summer school course and got a Foundation Degree in Contemporary Ceramic Practice at Newcastle College in 2009.

Chemical weed-spraying proposed to save $50,000 Chemical weed-spraying in Devonport could save Auckland Council $50,000 a year.

Auckland Council parks department is proposing to introduce chemical edge-spraying.

Ironically the council proposal comes hot on the heels of Devonport-Takapuna Local Board’s powerful endorsement of North Shore City Council’s chemical-free weed control.

Board member Alison Roe said she wanted to see council’s evidence that chemicals are

cheaper than the current hot-water treatment.

Council Parks Team Leader Parks Operations Grant Muir said the board could consider charging for the use of sports fields and setting up user charges for commercial events held on local parks this year.

Muir said more proposed cuts were on the horizon for the following year, including reduced mowing of parks and the removal of unused playground equipment and bins as well as frequently vandalised toilets.

Her family’s move to New Zealand four years ago put Bramble’s art practice back on the kitchen table. She has taught ceramics at the Mairangi Arts Centre and the Corban Estate Art Centre and her poppies are for sale at the Moko Art Space in Hot Water Beach.

“I absolutely love poppies, so when the St Heliers Bay people called me I was thrilled.

Now I am thinking about what to do next and Gary says it could be sunflowers,” she says.

By Rob Drent A common thread in most of the stories on the Ports of Auckland stealing our harbour is mention of the Japanese imported cars that form a large part of the cargo on a section of the wharves.

I wonder how many of these cars end up in Devonport parked in their dozens on the waterfront in Fullers’ free car park. On the one hand Ports of Auckland is being castigated for its use of (admittedly reclaimed land) for car storage while on the other

The Flagstaff Notes Auckland Council seems to be flying under the radar on the Fullers free car park.

Let’s face it, the car parking on Devonport waterfront is a park-and-ride.

Should this be on the waterfront? If council admits it is a park and ride shouldn’t it be moved to land next to the Claystore at 27 Lake Rd and a link bus provided. Or a two-level car park at New World square be revisited?

A lot of money was spent on the Marine Square upgrade and admittedly most in the community wanted carparks retained.

However many were also shocked that a bus shelter was proposed by the ferry terminal, which would mar the view.

A key focus of the design ethos for Marine Square was to improve the sight-lines back to the city.

To my eye the views back to city are just as compromised by the many vehicles parked there every day.

Is it perhaps times to revisit parking at New World?

The possibility of underground car parking was dismissed there more than two decades ago due to engineering difficulties caused by a high water table. Around 15 years ago suggestions of a two-level carpark at New World square were chucked out by the then Devonport Community Board.

The carpark is owned by council and New World, whose owner John Ashton is perhaps

April 17 2015 justifiably frustrated by the numbers of nonshoppers using the parks.

Times have moved on as have engineering solutions to difficult sites. With the scarcity and price of land in Devonport, the cost of going underground at New World is more attractive.

It could also offer a temporary home for vehicles whose owners are using the nearby ferry service.

The Auckland Council suggestion to remove Devonport’s much loved street flower beds in an attempt to save money is sure to be greeted locally with the derision it deserves.

The beds have been part of the Devonport landscape for generations. Replacement by lower maintenance natives would take away part of the character of the suburb in a way many feared when Devonport was absorbed by North Shore City, and now Auckland Council.

Several years ago Roger Brittenden waged a fight on the Devonport Community Board to retain the flowers in the face of North Shore City plans to introduce natives. Now it seems the fight is on again.

It seems much of our lot these days is to fight government and local authorities to retain what we have rather then work towards enhancing our communities.

Belmont heritage goes down the Googler The heritage value of a Belmont bungalow has been dismissed by Auckland Council, primarily on the basis of a Google Maps Street View.

A childcare centre proposed for 9 Preston Ave will see the demolition of a pre-1944 bungalow, and a business with many car movements established in a residential area. In the planning evaluation of the site obtained by the Flagstaff it appears that site visits are no longer a prerequisite for heritage evaluations.

Auckland Heritage Specialist Bryan Bennett used Google Maps Street View to decide that the circa-1935 bungalow is not worth saving.

After completing the box “Date Site Visit” on his evaluation form with “Not undertaken,” Bennett writes: “The building demonstrates minor historical and architectural interests as a typical survival of an interwar bungalow” and says the building lacks “any remarkable physical traits” to warrant its scheduling as a heritage place.

Bennett then concedes that the bungalow would contribute to the special character of an area. “However, based on experience of the site from Google street view, a site and context analysis of the property is likely to demonstrate the early character of the street has broken down to some degree.”

Bennett advises that “further evaluation in relation to historic heritage matters is not required” for the application to remove or demolish the pre-1944 bungalow.

This information was not provided by council to neighbours fighting the application.

The Flagstaff sought some background to the proposed centre from the applicants.

Their response is: “My husband and I have been long-term residents of the Shore, with Mark born and has lived all his life this side of the bridge.

We moved to the Hauraki area almost 10 years ago and our children currently attend Takapuna Grammar.

“I have been involved (as a centre owner) in early childhood education since 2000 and am very passionate about high-quality education. The centre will be privately owned by myself and Mark and will not be part of a chain, franchise or corporate. We believe there is demand on the Devonport peninsula, with recent comments in your publication by the Devonport Community Crèche supporting this view.

“We purchased the property with the view of building a centre on the site after looking in the area for over 12 months. We intend to build something beautiful that has been designed by an internationally awardwinning architect and which in the foremost complies with the rules and expectations of the District Plan for the Residential 4 zone.

“Our aim is to contribute to and be a respectful and valued member of the community that our family enjoys living in.”

Residents rally over childcare centre concerns

But Auckland Council officers say the effects of the centre would be only minor.

Yvonne Groot, Mark Harris and Janene Olsen bought the 1930s bungalow last June. Their new childcare centre would include the demolition of the existing bungalow to be replaced by a new purpose-built centre for 40 children and seven staff. It would be open weekdays from 7.30am until 6pm, and have six carparks.

Auckland Council assessed the impact of the application as “minor” and asked only immediate neighbours of 9 Preston Ave for approval.

Dave Teesdale at 7 Preston Ave says a “fullscale commercial operation” on the quiet street affects all Preston Ave residents significantly and council should consider the feedback of the wider neighbourhood.

Teesdale and his partner Kirsty Datson have yet to meet the purchasers of 9 Preston Ave. “The first we heard from them and knew about their plans was when we received the Resource Application in February. And then we realised that the neighbours up the street hadn’t got anything,” Teesdale said. Only the five houses directly bordering the property and five pensioners’ flats across the street were notified.”

Teesdale, an engineer who works from home, says he doesn’t want to see the old bungalow go and that the new building is not in keeping with the area. He is worried that more than 550 cubic metres of dirt will need excavating to level the site and he has doubts about a proposed “fortress-style” three-metre high acoustic fence.

“The area shown on the floor plan appears very small for 40 children and seven staff (similar to a dog kennel),” he wrote in his submission to council.

Teesdale worries that the continuous noise

during the day from children playing will be “annoying and disruptive to residents in the area, especially the shift workers who are sleeping and persons working from home.”

But most of all he is worried about traffic and parking. “There will be hundreds of cars picking kids up and dropping them off and looking for a park. The plans show only six parks out front, which is simply not enough,” he says.

Auckland Council spokesperson Nigel Horrocks says that in the Residential 4 zone, childcare centres for up to five children are a permitted activity, for between six and nine children a controlled activity and a discretionary activity beyond that.

Under changes set out in the new Auckland District Plan, the bungalow would be protected to some degree under council’s heritage overlay.

A report by the Planning Room, a firm of consultants hired by the new owners of 9 Preston Ave states: “The existing house upon the subject site is considered to be an isolated pre-1944 building and has become surrounded by more recent buildings and site development. In addition, the building is set back from the road and has been modified over time.

Council’s Resource Consent Manager Ian Dobson says the Proposed Unitary Plan Pre-1944 Demolition Rule conflicts with the operational North Shore City District Plan, which permits demolition of the building. The panel of Independent Commissioners that will hear the application “will need to decide which provision to give greater weight to,” he says In his decision whether to notify a consent application, Duty Commissioner Alan Watson said that apart from directly adjoining neighbours of 9 Preston Ave, “no other persons are deemed to be adversely affected as all other people are sufficiently removed from the site to not experience any adverse effects arising from noise, traffic movements and an overspill of parking to the street.”

Fullers launch new ferry night-time services

Fullers added more late-evening ferry services to Devonport last week, but the launch was low key as buses are not yet in place to meet all ferries on the Shore side.

From Sunday to Thursday nights half-hourly ferry services have been added on the Auckland to Devonport route and return. From Monday to Thursday ferries run half hourly from town until 11.30 pm and on Sundays and public holidays

until 10 pm.

Previously half-hourly services finished at 8 pm, a stopping point widely criticised by Devonport residents who were attending events in town. Long waits often meant people would drive cars over rather than catching ferries.

Fullers CEO Doug Hudson said the extra ferries had been introduced to meet customer demand.

Fullers would also continue to add special sailings when major events were held in the city.

The launch was low key because Auckland Transport had yet to find a way to link buses with ferries on the Devonport side, Hudson said.

A full launch would occur when this happened, he said. It meant not all services to Devonport would be met by a bus, but Hudson said it was important to get the extra ferry services going.

Kea repair work taking longer than expected The Kea ferry’s return to the DevonportAuckland route has been delayed until May. After the ferry’s crash into Victoria Wharf on February 17, it was thought the Kea would return to service just after Easter.

But Fullers CEO Doug Hudson told the Flagstaff last week that repairs “were taking longer than we thought.”

But the boat would be back in service “in May some time, hopefully,” he said.

The exact date was not known as Fullers would do stringent trialing and testing to satisfy itself and the Maritime NZ that the boat was ready to go to work again.

As part of the repair, unsecured seats on the lower deck of the boat have been secured. It was

not required by law but Fullers had decided it was best practice, Hudson said.

Additional first-aid kits would be placed around the boat – more than required by law.

“Some of the feedback (from passengers after the accident) was that they had to go looking for first-aid kits, so we wanted to address that.” More than 20 passengers were injured in the crash.

Meanwhile Maritime NZ’s investigation into the incident is ongoing, and “Fullers is cooperating fully with that process,” a spokesman said.

“When the investigation is complete (in foursix weeks) an internal memo will be prepared, and a decision made on what compliance action may be appropriate.” Fullers will be advised of

Maritime NZ’s findings and recommendations and will be expected to outline how these will be implemented.

“Maritime NZ will require the vessel to be surveyed (by a recognised surveyor) to ensure it is safe to operate. Maritime NZ will also require Fullers to show how they intend to operate the vessel safely on its return to service,” the spokesman said.

Secrecy over Crown land sell-off Moves to sell off Navy occupied land at Torpedo Bay are shrouded in so much secrecy that elected officials can’t even acknowledge it’s happening.

The Flagstaff revealed last issue that 6,000 sqm of waterfront Navy-occupied land at Torpedo Bay (including and surrounding the Navy Museum) is being sold off in a confidential Treaty of Waitangi settlement.

Public access to the waterfront is extremely constrained in the already agreed deal, the Flagstaff understands.

The Crown has agreed to a marginal strip around the land of only five to six metres.

Usually marginal strips on foreshore land are 20 metres.

The Flagstaff understands that Auckland Council has stressed the need for as wide a marginal strip as possible for the public.

The sale is for commerical redress of Maori land claims.

Local climbing sensation Erica Gatland (17) is off to Arco, Italy this August to compete in the World Youth Sport Climbing Championship. She is representing New Zealand at the event for the second year in a row.

After finishing the climbing season unbeaten nationally, in the Under-18 and Open divisions, Erica was invited to try out for the youth worlds last month to qualify for the trip to Italy. “I had won pretty much every event I went to during the season and I did all right at the try-outs too,” she says.

At last year’s World Youth champs in Noumea, New Caledonia, Erica came 26th overall and was the first Kiwi in the Under-18 division. This year’s competition could be ever stiffer as Erica will be competing as an Under-20 climber.

Still a Year 12 student at Takapuna Grammar School, Erica recently started working as an Assistant Coach for the Auckland Sport Climbing Club.

“I coach 20 kids between the ages of nine and 25, girls and boys, twice a week after school,” she says.

Her immersion in the climbing world continued when Erica was voted the Athlete’s Representative for the Climbing New Zealand committee.

“It’s great. I get to all the meetings and speak on behalf of us competitiors,” she says.

Pohutukawa great on coast but menace on suburban streets council about these trees.

Apart from the dangerous instability, these trees are breaking up the footpath, my garage floor and my garden paths.

On one occasion the “tree expert” at North Shore City Council earnestly said that: “These trees are at least 350 years old and could not be touched”.

Clearly this “expert” was incompetent as in nature, trees do not sit in a straight line, just inside and parallel to the road boundary.

One has to wonder how much of council policy is the result of incompetent advice!

These trees and possibly the pururi at No 43 were probably the result of the “just built house” owners doing joint landscaping.

My house was built in 1912 and the adjacent houses would be a similar age.

This makes these trees barely 100 years old.

There was a fourth pohutukawa in the

I live at 45 Tainui Road. My neighbour at No 47 has two large pohutukawas just inside the front boundary.

There is also a large pohutukawa in the same position at No 49.

At 4 pm on Thursday 2 April, on a windless day and without warning, a branch of one of these pohutukawas fell across my garage.

The foliage covered the verandah and reached the main roof of the house.

This branch had a circumference of 1.7m and would have weighed several tonnes.

Fortunately the firewall of the garage and an internal steel beam took most of the weight, with only three sheets of roofing needing to be replaced.

On two earlier occasions branches from these trees have fallen onto Tainui Road.

Chubb Chubb offered to replace dead Mimi We read the article about the despicable behaviour going on down in Stanley Point regarding the rabbits and would like to offer the O’Callaghan Family one of our much loved bunnies.

We have a gorgeous black chubby 4-month-old bunny available. We live in Cheltenham and the bunnies (there are three plus mum) are well known to the locals for their sweet loving and carefree nature. They love people and often hang around the gate just to seek attention. They love bananas, apples, carrots and bread!

So if the O’Callaghans would like to come and see “Chubb Chubb” and give him a new home, they are welcome. Another bunny from the litter went just around the corner so we often pop around to visit. It would be nice if Chubb Chubb stayed local.

Cruise ship passengers welcomed at Op Shop Our Community shop (known to many locals as ‘the op shop’) in The Arcade has a good number of customers from the cruise ships that come to Auckland. Passengers buy a surprising range of goods from us, ranging from clothes for a fancy dress night on the ship, paperbacks, souvenirs to take home as gifts, or small collectibles that take their fancy. Two of

our volunteers put a welcome sign out for every ship that is in port, placing it at the Victoria Rd end of the arcade. This sign attracts many passengers who come to Devonport by ferry; others find us via Wynyard St and our shop banner that is placed at that end of the arcade.

It is delightful and we appreciate their custom.

Oliver! production leaves audiences wanting more Last Wednesday, my husband and I went to see Takapuna Grammar School’s production of Oliver! at the Bruce Mason Theatre. WOW! What a magnificent show. It was so professional it could have been a West End production. We were blown away, and at times had tears in our

eyes. At the end they got a standing ovation, well deserved.

Oliver and some children were from Belmont Intermediate. Well done Takapuna Grammar, can’t wait for your next production.

Hospice shop opens on Victoria Rd Hospice North Shore is opening a new retail store on Victoria Rd, Devonport in May. It will be open seven days a week and the charity needs volunteers who have four hours a week or fortnight to spare. There are a number of roles available for volunteers; either serving at the counter or helping behind the scenes with sorting and pricing donations.

Volunteers are normally asked to work a three-and-a-half hour shift (9.30am-1pm or 1-4.30pm) and will be standing most of

that time.

The new shop is located at 28 Victoria Rd – currently empty but for many years home to Wild & Woolly Yarns, which relocated down the street. The new store will be the second to carry a new look that is being rolled out in all the charity’s retail outlets on the North Shore.

Hospice has been an integral part of the North Shore community for more than 30 years. With a vision of ‘making each day the best day possible’ the charity strives to

provide the best quality of life to people who are dying, and to those they love.

Hospice North Shore’s Chief Executive Jan Nichols said: “The people of North Shore have been extremely generous in donating used goods for sale and volunteering. It is this support that keeps us going.”

The new Devonport store will make a total of nine stores, from Albany south.

TGS Rowing Club still treading water – but young blades meet Mahe Takapuna Grammar School (TGS) Rowing Club says it continues to be in the dark about whether it has a future home adjacent to Bayswater Marina, says its President Don Bisset.

As with the port at Bledisloe Wharf, Bisset says Auckland Transport (AT) is focused on using the council land for parking and buses and there are no provisions for marine-related activities. “And that’s not right,” he says.

“It just continues to be a long waiting game for us. Last year we met with AT and they were talking about fast-tracking the ferry terminal, but with the new budget constraints the project has slipped way down the priority list,” he says.

Bisset believes the club can stay in its current premises for a while longer. “It’s great for our short term security but doesn’t give us a long-term plan,” he says.

Antarctica marathon challenge as travel bug heats up

Warming up in Devonport… Antarctica marathon runner James Lindsay contemplates his next challenge

James Lindsday is aiming to visit a new country every year.

For Antartica he decided to run a marathon. He spoke to Maire Vieth days after his return to Devonport.

James Lindsay loves making lists. “I am an avid believer in them and in having plans and targets. Having something to look forward to achieving – it’s good for the soul,” he says.

Running a marathon in Antarctica had been on Lindsay’s wish list for a while and last month he ticked it off. The trip also ticked other boxes for the investment portfolio manager. “I did it to test myself, to visit a place I otherwise

wouldn’t, to meet lots of great adventurous people, to have a holiday and to raise money for a good cause. “ Lindsay (41) booked his trip a year ago and was lucky to get one of 200 sought-after spots. The US adventure tourism company Marathon Tours, which organises marathons all over the world, has sent a boat of 100 runners to Antarctica every year since 1995.

The trip has become so popular they added a second boat a couple of years ago.

Getting there is a big part of the adventure.

The boats take off from Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, the world’s southernmost city, heading for King George Island, the largest of the South Shetland Islands, about 120 km off the coast of Antarctica. To reduce the impact on the environment, only 100 tourists are allowed on the island on any given day, so runners from each boat take to the marathon course on consecutive days.

But first they have to get across the Drake Passage. They do this on a Russian scientific vessel crewed by Russians, complete with retro communist telephones and borscht on the menu. The crossing took just under two complete days, at times in five-metre swells.

Lindsay, a dive instructor in his youth, says he enjoyed the waves. “That’s just my mentality. I believe enjoying the trip helps you through it. I also wore a seasick patch,” he says.

He runs with a similar attitude. “I enjoy it and have always had a body that didn’t resist it too much. Plus, once you start training, it

gets pretty addictive,” he says.

Lindsay ran his first half-marathon with his mother at the age of 12, while growing up in Christchurch, and has since competed in Auckland’s half-marathon numerous times.

But he had completed a full marathon (42 km) only once prior to Antarctica, in Tokyo in February 2011, just days before a massive earthquake and tsunami hit Japan.

Tokyo at 4 degrees Celsius in February taught Lindsay to love the cold. “The funny thing about running a marathon in the cold is that the body seems to be under a lot less stress,” he says.

Starting the marathon on March 9 in Antarctica it was zero degrees Celsius. “I wore a monitor on my wrist and could see that my heart rate was about 20 beats per minute less than during my training in Auckland but I felt quite strong the whole race through,” he says.

King George Island’s icy dirt roads, however, looked uninviting in the melting snow.

“The race organisers went out the day before to check the course and got stuck on their quad bike. They came back to the boat with pictures of mud, quicksand and pooled water and scared the living daylights out of lots of us,” he said.

Lindsay had used fear to motivate himself to train. “Because you are worried and you know it is going to be hard, you actually train a bit harder. Even months before the race, it got me out of bed earlier,” he says.

Devonport’s volcanic cones prepared him well. “I usually would run up North Head,

April 17 2015 then Lake Rd and back and up Mt Victoria.

Those hills were super good training because some of the hills on King George were just as steep,” he says.

On race day, things got off to a slow start.

A three-loop course between Russian, Uruguayan, Chilean and Chinese research stations was changed at the last minute, while “we were standing around like penguins, hopping and huddling, it was so cold,” Lindsay says.

The runners had come onshore on inflatable boats wearing gumboots and other wet weather gear. Two small tents, heavily anchored into the icy ground, covered two buckets: home made portaloos.

Lindsay ran in thermal clothing and regular running shoes, hat and gloves. “It was the perfect gear. When I ran downwind, I unzipped my jacket and into the wind, I zipped it up again,” he says.

As one of the least experienced runners on his boat, Lindsay was “surprised and quite pleased” to finish the day in sixth place with a time of 4:28:58. Once the second lot of 100 runners finished the following day, Lindsay ended up in 17th place.

Lindsay found his fellow runners an exciting and inspiring lot. He was one of two Kiwis on the boat, along with men and women from 19 other countries. “The people who do this are a bit crazy and fun. A 61-year-old man had already done more than 400 marathons.

I talked to an American woman who had just completed a 250km Moroccan seven-day unassisted running race. Another person was on his round of seven marathons on seven continents for the fifth time. I felt like I needed to keep my mouth shut,” he says.

After the race, the boats pushed on further south with three stops along the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, mainland Antarctica’s northernmost part. Lindsay saw elephant seals, leopard seals and minke whales. “It blows your mind how close they get. You are not supposed to disturb the animals but they were all just as curious as us. Penguins nibbled on our boots and pecked someone’s bum when we were on land,” he says. During a group kayak trip, a leopard seal, the Antarctic’s second-largest seal species and predator (after the killer whale), curiously approached the group and grabbed the rudders of a few kayaks.

Icebergs made an impression on Lindsay as well. “It’s just incredible how much ice there is and how big the cliffs are. The crew on the boat was constantly on the alert for icebergs and one night at about 3.00am, we must have hit one. There was a big crack and the whole boat vibrated,” he says.

Once the boat arrived safely back in Argentina, Lindsay travelled further north across South America with a small group, stopping off in Peru, Brazil and Chile. “I hiked up the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru and went to see the Iguazu Falls on the border of Argentina and Brazil. We looked at them from the Argentina side first, then went through customs and looked back on them from Brazil and on to Rio for a couple of days,” he says.

Champagne on ice, yeah right… James Lindsay crosses the finishing line of one of the world’s most gruelling marathons The month-long trip was the reward for a long year of work without a day off. Lindsay is Senior Portfolio Manager at Nikko AM, a large Japanese investment company. He has worked for the firm for 17 years and runs an investment portfolio in New Zealand and Australia. “I love my job. I am lucky to get paid for something I love doing because it is always challenging and always different. But last year, we were incredibly busy so this trip made up for that,” he says.

Whether running, working or playing, Lindsay says he enjoys doing things to the max. “I also love diving, I learned to fly and paraglide and I carry a camera with me wherever I go,” he says.

As part of the Antractica trip he fundraised just over $8,000 for Volunteer Services Abroad (VSA). “When you do something crazy, you can try and make some good out of it too,” he says. The effort was instantly rewarding. “Cyclone Pam came through Vanuatu on March 13 while I was away and VSA had a number of people already on the ground who decided to stay and help with the clean-up,” he says.

Lindsay grew up in Christchurch, the son of an anaesthetist and a council committee secretary. After graduating from Christchurch Boys High, he studied at the University of Canterbury for a BCom in Marketing and Finance, then a Master’s degree in Finance

and Business Strategy. Lindsay became a diving instructor for a company in Kaikoura while still at high school. In his last year at uni, he worked at a share broker’s office for a year before he joining Nikko 17 years ago, moving to Auckland two years later. “I never went on an OE, hence the long trips every now and then,” he says.

Lindsay wants to pass on the travel bug to his daughter Sophia, aged 12, the same age he was when he ran the Christchurch half-marathon with his mother. “A couple of years ago Sophia and I travelled to the US, France and Dubai together. I like to travel and think it’s a good trait to pass on to kids to see other places and a lot of places around New Zealand,” he says.

For the last three years, Lindsay and two other Devonport dads have taken their daughters on overnight tramps together. “We call it our Father/Daughter Tramping Club and this year, we are heading to the Pinnacles,” he says.

Now that Antarctica is completed, new aims have made it onto Lindsay’s list. “I have got lots of goals and never enough time to do them. Running seven marathons on seven continents is something I am contemplating.

I want to do New York, Rome or Paris next.

I want to improve my French, and I want to run the Auckland Marathon this year too,” he says.

Car thieves caught but vigilance needed A recent spree of car thefts and burglaries on the North Shore involved at least two Devonport vehicles (a Mazda Familia and a Mitsubishi Pajero), both stolen in the early hours of the morning from outside the owners’ homes.

Beth Bates, Communications Manager at Waitemata Police, says some of the offences involve using the stolen cars for “ram-raid” style burglaries at commercial premises.

The Police created a special team to deal with the spree and made numerous arrests, including that of the 19-year-old who stole

the Mazda, Bates says.

The Mitsubishi Pajero has not been recovered.

According to Bates: “Police believe that in recent weeks offenders have realised that committing crime on the North Shore is unwise as there is a high chance they will be caught by Police.”

“Despite this reduction in offences, Police still require retailers and public to remain vigilant with their security and report any suspicious behaviour to Police immediately,” she says.

DOC path repair awaiting approval since September More than a dozen concrete fence posts along the lower path around North Head are still waiting to be fixed, six months after a tree branch damaged them in a storm last year.

Department of Conservation (DoC) Ranger Stefan Sebregts told the Flagstaff: “The damage happened last year in one of the major storms we had. A big branch of a tree suspended on the cliff above broke loose and landed on the post and/or top rail and ripping a number of posts, like a domino effect.”

“We are currently awaiting approval for funding for repairs to be undertaken,” he says.

Devonport cricket girls best in Auckland It’s been a stellar season for North Shore Cricket Club’s Under-14 Girls A team, winning the Auckland-wide Future Hearts competition with a commanding six-point lead.

The side only lost one game all summer.

Prior to Christmas, the girls competed in the competition’s Under-14 B Division. They won and moved to Under-14 A in the New Year.

The team sealed its win in the seventh of eight games, with a crushing defeat of Parnell. Losing the toss and being sent in to bat, Shore were 123/1 when time ran out for their innings with 26 overs complete. Sam Petherick retired on 51 and Anna Browning was 39 not out. Parnell were two down by the end of the second over and were finished off for 51 in the 17th over.

The girls then also won their last game against Takapuna.

Scott says 28 girls are currently playing cricket for the club. “For the last two years, we have grown every year and added a team every year. I would like to see this trend continue so we have strong teams to play in higher levels eventually,” she says.

“It’s a great sport for girls because it teaches them great physical skills but there is also lots of time to hang with mates,” she says. Scott’s daughter Kennedy played in the winning team.

A day at the beach Busloads of Year 13 students headed off to Muriwai beach on the last Thursday of March. Packed with lunch, clipboards and booklets, the students were recording data that will be used for their recently finished internal assessment and an external later in the year. Sketches were made by the students of the Otakamiro Headland, Maori Bay, and Muriwai beach itself. The classes split into four groups later on in the day to collect data from the waves, dunes and cliff tops. The day was a success, and hopefully the same will be able to be said about the grades!

The Giant Book Swap Students and staff donated pre-loved books to our library, to fundraise for Vanuatu and the victims of Cyclone Pam. Books were dropped off on March 23 and 24, ready to be selected by students and staff wanting a new book.

The people who donated books received a ‘library dollar’ to spend at interval exclusively for book donators on Wednesday 25th March. At lunchtime, everyone was welcome to buy a book with one ‘library dollar’ or $2 with no donated book. “Those who participated thoroughly enjoyed the event and are happy to repeat the experience,” said Mrs White, the Teacher Librarian. Another library staff member, Miss Stewart, added that “the Book Swap was

lots of fun for everyone who participated, with an element of excitement as the front doors were opened and students and staff swiftly descended on the tables of books.”

The library raised approximately $200 for the Vanuatu VSA relief fund. Mrs White said: “We were very happy with our first Giant Book Swap, although, in truth, the ‘giant’ side of things may have been a little optimistic!”

The book swap was still a success that will contribute towards Vanuatu’s loss. The library plans on holding a book swap near the end of each term in future and hopefully more staff and students will take part.

Reflections on Summer Tournament week ROWING: The competition was high at New Zealand Secondary School Rowing Nationals this year. With 2196 students entered from 122 schools, the ‘Maadi Cup’ is the biggest school sporting event in the southern hemisphere.

Twenty-six TGS rowers went down to Lake Karapiro for the week to compete at what is the culmination, for some, of up to four seasons of hard work. The Girls Under-16 double of Liberty Soanes and Emerald Scofield did especially well, placing second in their B final putting them in the top 10 in New Zealand.

Monday and Tuesday was hectic. With 52 events to get through, the schedule was jampacked. Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday was also busy with rêpechages. On Thursday the regatta got down to business with quarter and semi-finals, which determined the placing in the finals on Friday and Saturday.

TGS other B finals were for the Girls Under-18 Lightweight double sculls - Rebekah Alvey and Emerald Scofield came fourth (a top 12 result), with their best time ever of 7min 58 sec. Liberty Soanes was sixth in her B Girls Under-16 single sculls final, (top 15). There were two C finals - Boys Under-17 single - Tom Ferguson, who came third (top 20) - and the Boys Under-17 double of Finn Hunter and Tom Ferguson, who gained second, (again top 20).

BY DOUGAL BURDEN VOLLEYBALL: Tournament Week saw the largest indoor sporting event in New Zealand and our volleyball team was there. A team of Year 11 boys – Brett O Neill, Alex and Jac Roberts, Will Watson, Josh Harris, Ananda Birchfield, Liam Donnelly, Connor Lambert, Rhys Harnett, Keenan Hodge and Tom Smeed – and coach, Tristan Hegglun drove to Palmerston North to compete. It was a tough and challenging competition for these young students as they were playing mainly senior teams. Previously gaining eigth in the close Auckland competition, the team were put into a division where they managed to place a competitive sixth. “It was our school’s first ever time at senior national tournament and it was tough competing against senior players,” said the team’s captain Brett O’Neill, “As a team made up entirely of Year 11s, we are aiming to be on the podium as Year 13s.” These talented boys, committed to their sport, will be trialling for New Zealand’s beach volleyball teams these holidays.

ULTIMATE FRISBEE: Discs flying in the last of the summer heat, the Annual Ultimate Frisbee National Championships wasn’t an event to be missed by our teams.

Doing their absolute best at Nationals was a key motivation with the teams training for weeks during both after-school and morning sessions, which were coached by Mr Cade.

Nationals this year were held at Owen Delaney Park in Taupo. We entered a Boys and a Girls team. The tournament consisted of eight games, which began in the early hours of the morning. The other Ultimate teams were fiercely competitive and well-spirited. The Boys team placed seventh overall, winning half their games, and although the Girls team didn’t

place, they won the ‘Spirit’ award for the second year running. Olivia Boniface, dedicated player and captain of the TGS Girls team stated: “I was very proud, for the second year we won the Spirit Award, which is a big part of Ultimate Frisbee. For a team of five beginner players, I think we worked really well and learnt a lot from it.” Victor Tsyan, a valuable player in the Boys team also said: “The team worked very well, considering we’d only just started playing together.” It was definitely an awesome experience for both the new and experienced players to improve their game and meet other like-minded people and the teams look forward to repeating their same success next year.

Wake-up call – sleeping driver escapes uninjured Good Friday started with a bang for Devonport barista Moaroa Cook, who witnessed a car accident on Victoria Rd as he opened up Corelli’s Café at 6.45am.

“It was still quite dark and I heard this big bang on the road. I went out straight away and talked to the young man in the car. He said he had fallen asleep at the wheel after driving here from the west coast,” Cook says.

The man’s white Mazda coupe hit a lamp post across the street head-on.

The accident left the post dangling across the road until around 10 am, when it was removed after electricity was switched off.

“The man was okay...we tried to cordon off the road until police came. He sat outside for a couple of hours and a couple of friends came and supported him. Plus there were a lot of concerned members of the public,” says Cook.

Waitemata Police Senior Constable Garry Learmonth, who attended the scene said: “The young fellow fell asleep and no alcohol has been involved. He is uninjured and called Lucky escape… a driver fell asleep at the wheel but walked out of his police himself.” car without serious injury

The centrepiece of the commemorative pavilion is a sculpture by local artist Helen Pollock and is titled As Above, So Below, which honours and commemorates the struggle and sacrifice of the New Zealanders who served at sea during World War One. Walk through the commemorative pavilion to the A D Boyle Room. This space allows visitors to find out more about the events at sea from 1914 to 1918. Here they can access the WW100 website set up on iPads while sitting in comfort surrounded by items from the World War One era.

It is the first of a series of concerts, the profits from which will be used for seat refurbishment at the centre.

Director Peter Seagrove said the Rose Singers were a group started by Ruth Chapman that “provides a platform for people who want to sing – no audition necessary.”

“Over the last couple of years they have put on a number of shows at the Rose Centre in Belmont and I was lucky enough to compere the last one, You Must Remember This.

“I confess that I didn’t feel that lucky when I was first involved; many had not been of stage before and I felt that their lack of experience may drag the show down. However I hadn’t reckoned on their enthusiasm and that of their audiences, who came along uncritically to share and enjoy the evenings.

“If anything went awry on stage, and it did from time to time, it was all part of the fun. Many of the inexperienced cast gained experience and grew in stature through the season,” Segrove said. The latest venture is an Old Time Music Hall that he is directing and chairing.

“I can’t promise perfection but I can promise an entertaining evening in the company of a great bunch of people who want to sing.”

Poppy Project in full bloom at TGS Hundreds of personalised poppies are blooming at Takapuna Grammar School (TGS) for a special Anzac Day service to be held at the school’s library.

The one-off sewing project was initiated by Soft-Tech teachers Deborah Woodward and Jane Rouse. It started out small but has taken off, Woodward says.

“We wanted to do something special for the centenary of the First World War and thought that every Year 9 student should make a poppy for the library event,” she says. Soon, the project included all Soft-Tech students, but Woodward says she has also handed out poppymaking-kits to many teachers and staff.

“Jackie Rogers, the IB Coordinator has made about 40 poppies. She finds it therapeutic and has gotten all the IB students to make one too. Our Deputy Principal Brian Wynn is planning to make a poppy. The Special Ed students are all making them. Anne White, the librarian, has run poppy-making workshops at lunchtime for anyone who wants to join in as well.” Woodward expects to produce about 500 poppies. “They will all be displayed at the library for two weeks and then the people who made them can take them home and keep them as an heirloom for the next 100 years,” she says.

They will be worth keeping. Each poppy is dedicated to any person affected by war, the dedication often expressed in stitches and yarn. “Some chose their great-grandfathers in New Zealand, Australia or the UK. But Becky Ireland dedicated her poppy to a twoyear-old girl called Maureen, who was sent out of London during the war and didn’t see her parents for four years. Cook Islands’ Devonport military connection remembered

Stirring… The Te Ulu O Te Watu dancers stopped traffic and brought Clarence St to life last Saturday Devonport’s 2015 centenary Anzac Day celebrations have already started with a ceremony for the Cook Islands soldiers recruited to serve for King and Country in the Great War. All 500 soldiers received their initial training at Narrow Neck Military Camp, together with Maori, Niuean and other ethnic recruits, where some died of illness before leaving to fight. Eight soldiers are buried at O’Neill’s Point Cemetery in Bayswater.

Last Saturday, the New Zealand Cook

Islands Arts Collective, Devonport RSA and the Depot Artspace joined together to remember the Cook Islands soldiers where they started their service, in Devonport.

The day began with laying of flowers at the soldiers’ graves in Bayswater. A procession from the War Memorial outside Devonport Library down Clarence St was followed by an afternoon of singing, drumming and dancing performances and the opening of two art shows that run until

May 6.

Anzac tributes in song at Holy Trinity A service of remembrance will be held at Holy Trinity Church, Devonport, featuring the Orlando Singers.

In this special Anzac programme, as well as presenting some popular songs of the time, the Orlando Singers showcase David Hamilton’s recent compositions set to selected poems from World War 1 (WW1).

These range from the famous In Flanders Fields by John McCrae, to other lesser known works. The group will sing songs from WW1, as well as others from their

repertoire. There will also be a selection of light-hearted songs, which the choir will perform during the service.

Led by long-time member, Anita Banbury, the 12-member group has a proud history of entertaining audiences both in New Zealand and overseas and includes Devonport singers.

• The service takes place at Holy Trinity Church, Church St, Devonport, on April 26 (the day after Anzac Day) at 5 pm. Entry free, donation appreciated.

Bayswater School Field of Remembrance assembly Bayswater School will hold a remembrance assembly beside its Field of Remembrance on April 24 at 9am. The assembly will include poetry written by the children and a song that the school choir has been practising.

School principal Lindsay Child said: “As a school with close ties to the Navy, we will be preparing our Field of Remembrance with the help of Naval personnel making the crosses on Wednesday 22nd April.”
