The pilot had been designed by a range of council departments and CCOs and with help from the private sector, the memo said. The plan was to promote the sites by January and run the trial in February and March.

But local board member Mike Cohen said on November 25 “all hell broke loose” when members found out council had failed to consult.

“If anyone had talked to us early on, we could have told them that the area is already heavily used by local visitors in the summer, that we used to have issues with drinking on the car park about 12 years ago, which we fixed with lighting and a chain across the Seabreeze Rd exit, or what a battle it was to get a beach volleyball court on Woodall park past the neighbours,” he says.

“Plus our board just fought a huge battle to retain the Takapuna Holiday Park, only to now undermine them by diverting business from them,” he said.

“What exactly are the benefits of freedom camping for our community?” he asked. Cohen says he receives regular complaints about freedom campers on Queens Pde. The pilot programme aims to double freedom-camping sites across Auckland, control demand through a marketing campaign and establish a quick-response team to deal with complaints.

Freedom campers spend around $1.2 million in Auckland in February alone, the memo said.

Acting up to get round council by-laws Devonport businesses are using eye-catching tactics in the face of council’s new signage rules and a defunct visitor information centre as they promote themselves for Christmas and the summer holidays.

The Depot Artspace has hired a group of local acting students to publicise its upcoming Rembrandt Remastered exhibiton.

Depot Artspace director Lynn Lawton, says having local kids in period costume handing out brochures about an exciting show is to combat the loss of signage due to a newly enforced council by-law.

The Depot has been unable to put a sign on the corner of Clarence St and Victoria Rd to direct visitors towards the not-for-profit community art gallery since the council clampdown started in November.

That signage is needed more than ever, as this summer the Depot will display 50 digital reproductions of paintings by Rembrandt in the show’s first exhibition in the southern hemisphere, says Lawton. He has also paid $180 to apply for a temporary-sign permit, but is still waiting for a council response.

The actors will create a buzz around the show and will also promote Devonport to visitors, says Lawton says. They will be out on the streets three hours a day for two months.This is especially helpful “while our visitor centre remains closed because of an argument between council CCOs,” he says.

Devonport Chocolates, located on Wynyard St, has been subverting the signage by-law in a different way. Instead of its street sign on the corner of Victoria Rd and Clarence St, it has parked a bike that promotes the shop on its back rack. Ironically, the bike stand it is locked to has been provided by council.

The Flagstaff will be publishing a visitor guide called Destination Devonport to pass on our local knowledge to Devonport’s summer visitors.

A birthday cake that’s worth peddling

Rock steady: Devonstock in the hands of young pros

Girl power… (from left): Kate Lee, Dani Clements-Levi, Sophie Andrews and Ella Johnson have seized the mantle for Devonstock 2016 Devonstock – the annual open youth rock concert – is now being organised almost entirely by teenagers.

For the last two years, local teenagers Ella Johnson, Sophie Andrews and Dani Clements-Levi were mentored by Devonport Community Coordinator Maria Teape on what it takes to make a youth event happen. This time round, they are joined by Kate Lee and felt confident enough to run the show on their own, they say.

Sophie is in charge of getting food stalls set up, Ella has promoted the event, and Dani recruited local bands with the help of Depot Sound. Kate also worked on promotions.

Shed, the local band of the moment, is one of the performing groups. It is made up of Takapuna Grammar School students Bijoux Nortje on lead vocals, Francesca Parussini on keyboard, Kenny Liang on rhythm guitar, Gabriel Rea-Bucknall on lead guitar, Ben Jones on bass and Volkan Ozyurteri on drums.

It made it through to the regional final of this year’s Smokefree Rockquest.

LAKES is a hip-hop band, which includes local musicians. Former TGS student Morgan Allen is on bass and TGS school-leaver George Edgar is on guitar.

Also performing are The Rubics, O-Boy, and Rangitoto College singer Sophie Mashlan.

Year 12 TGS student Gabriel Jones will MC the afternoon.

Now in its ninth year, Devonstock started in 2007 with the involvement of then TGS student Sam Harper. It has previously been held at the Band Rotunda and Mt Victoria and is now in its fifth year on Windsor Reserve. Past acts have included The Naked and Famous, The Checks, The Earlybirds, and The Electric Confectionaires, as well as Ella Yelich-O’Connor (now better known as Lorde) and Louis McDonald.

Ryman complex changes could enhance viewshafts and streetscapes

Ryman’s plan of adding plants around a 110-metre-long building isn’t enough, says Reid.

“Excessive infill planting will simply draw attention to the intrinsic problems created by the design,” creating a ‘green wall’ instead,” he says.

“One of the unique aspects of the Ngataringa peninsula street patterns is its alignment with Devonport streets across Ngataringa Bay,” says Reid, who is giving evidence on behalf of the Ngataringa Bay Action Group.

Regent St aligns with Victoria Rd, and Wesley St with Bulwer St. Reid wants those “paper roads” to stay open, particularly at the southern end of Regent St, and let them visually cut through Ryman’s development. “This will break up the wall of buildings lining Ngataringa Road, protect Regent Street and Ngataringa Road’s visual connection with the harbour and integrate the village with the underlying urban structure of the peninsula,” he says.

Like other critics of Ryman’s proposal, Reid says its building layout, building heights, building lengths and material choice dominate their surroundings instead of integrating with them.

He reckons his paper road concept would address other issues by forcing a reshuffle of the buildings to fit the sloped site better, allowing more sunlight into communal courtyards and opening up pedestrian access to an otherwise “car-centric place.”

He describes the proposed buildings in the Ryman design as “cumbersome and heavy.”

Reid also raised other concerns, such as a “moat” between the buildings and Ngataringa Rd and the dominance of the buildings for the southern side of Ngataringa Bay. He fears a fence will separate Polly’s Park from the complex.

Kids with a passion for Wakakura playground A special connection to the Wakakura land has moved siblings Ai and Geo Innes-Mills to get creative. They have writen and drawn council submissions, asking for Ryman’s retirement complex to be scrapped and for the land to remain park-like.

Ai (11) and Geo (9) have lived on Ngataringa Rd all their lives and Wakakura is their playground.

Ai says her submission was sparked by how much she learned to care about the slope over that time.

“You never know what you find when you adventure there,” she says.

Geo once found a tree hut near Ngataringa Road.

“My friend Nico and I decided to improve it,” he says.

When taking the Flagstaff on a tour across the site, the kids find holes in hedges and fences, point out spiderwebs, halves of birds eggs, and native trees, as well as rubbish. There’s even a large tree growing on top of a pile of bricks left over from Duders Brickworks.

They are too young to remember Mabel Pollock, who created Polly’s Park along the coastline of the site, but say they are inspired by her care for the land along the water.

Earlier this year, Geo and Ai planted sunflower seeds further down the slope.

Last month, the siblings watched Guy Fawkes fireworks from the Wakakura site with friends and neighbours. “We always do that but maybe this was the last year,” says Ai. On the way back home, Ai and Geo resolve to play on the Wakakura lot more often, while they still can. “It makes me want to play here all day,” says Ai. She and Geo also remark on the signs for houses for sale along their street. “Everyone is moving,” says Ai. :

Devonport school zoning needing a revamp?

The Devonport peninsula has seven public primary schools. All bar one (Bayswater School) currently have zones in place.

Each school zone overlaps with neighbouring zones.

Children who live in a school zone are guaranteed a place in that school. Families who live in an overlap area can choose between those schools, and children are guaranteed a place in both schools.

If a school has extra places, children living outside the zone can apply for those as outof-zone students.

Soccer field saga continues A Dacre Park project team has been established comprising local residents, members of the Allen Hill Neighbour group and representatives from the North Shore United Football Club and Auckland Council Parks team.

The working group has been established after a long-running debate over what should happen at Allen Hill stadium and the surrounding area after council initially agreed to upgrade the soccer fields.

Council says several meetings have been held,. The next meeting (this month) will look at the design of the field and associated facilities, including car park and toilets.

Early in the new year, there will be a workshop with the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board and an open day for the wider community to have input into the project, a council spokesperson said.

Gate the next step for safer mountain The development of an automated gate for Takarunga/Mt Victoria to allow restricted vehicle access to the summit is the next step to make the mountain more pedestrian-friendly.

Paul Majurey, Chair of the Tūpuna Maunga Authority, said for Takarunga/ Mt Victoria, “the working concept is an automated gate and keypad stand located on the road below the entrance to the tennis court.”

Access arangements with lessees – such as the Michael King Writers’ Centre and The Devonport Folk Club (located in The Bunker) – will be discussed during the detailed design phase, Majurey said.

“As occurred with Maungawhau/Mt Eden, the public will be advised of progress and receive information in advance of installation,” he said.

The reasons behind the Maunga Authority decision to restrict vehicles on Takarunga/Mt Victoria included: • Each of the five Tūpuna Maunga has a single lane road to/around the tihi (summit) that is shared by cars and pedestrians.

• The summit roads have no adjoining footpath.

• Recent traffic surveys confirmed pedestrians outnumber vehicles travelling on

Takarunga.

• During the traffic surveys, contractors witnessed regular near-misses and vehicles exceeding the speed limit on most of the maunga. This corroborates the experience of management.

• Under the Health and Safety Act, the Maunga Authority is required to give the highest level of protection to people on the maunga against harm to their health, safety and welfare from hazards and risks arising from “work” (under the Act, the maunga constitute “workplaces”).

While there was no direct consultation with affected parties – including the public – the Tūpuna Maunga Integrated Management Plan (IMP) includes objectives such as reducing and limiting the location of vehicle access.

“The IMP was publicly notified and the subject of a public submission and hearing process,” Majurey said.

Additionally, the Tūpuna Maunga Authority comprises six mana whenua representatives and six Auckland Council representatives (three governing body members and three local board members), who had the chance to have input into the decision, Majurey said.

Boom and bust: schools call for zoning fairness

Demographic shifts and Unitary Plan zoning changes are hitting Devonport in unexpected ways. As the Ministry of Education is spending millions building classrooms to accommodate growing rolls at Belmont Primary School and Bayswater School, classrooms at the southern end of the peninsula are standing empty. Maire Vieth investigates.

Stanley Bay School (SBS) principal Glen Vinton and Devonport Primary School (DPS) principal Melinda Bennett have recently asked the Ministry of Education to review their zones.

They say demographic and Unitary Plan zoning changes have created an uneven playing field and that rebalancing of the area’s outdated school zones, which could save the taxpayer a lot of money.

Vinton says: “There is no use in having empty classrooms in one school and then investing millions of dollars building classrooms in other schools where we have capacity within the peninsula.”

Due to a declining roll, Vinton’s school will have two empty classrooms next year. SBS currently has 257 students, down from 273 last year.

Meanwhile, Bennett expects to have three DPS classrooms empty next year. The school’s roll has decreased from 307 to 286 over the last year.

Vinton and Bennett say their declining rolls are due to three key factors: • The Single House zone and heritage protection in Devonport, Cheltenham and Stanley Bay limits population growth; the more relaxed development controls in Belmont, Bayswater and Hauraki on the other hand will intensify housing there, increasing the population and growing school rolls.

• Booming house prices mean younger families struggle to live south of the golf course. Vinton says that since she arrived at SBS in 2003, prices have nearly tripled in some Stanley Bay streets, increasingly pushing young families out of the market and her school’s zone.

• The peninsula’s school zones are outdated.

“The Belmont Primary zone is massive and comes all the way down here and yet that’s the area that will grow and get a huge pool of new homes,” Vinton says. She says the ministry has

Bennett says the peninsula has a decreasing need for crossover zones where families are effectively in-zone for two schools and can choose which one they want to send their children to.

“With the new Community of Learning, all our amazing schools are increasingly working together. Needing to have choice between schools will be less and less an issue as we will be more and more coherent,” she says.

Vinton and Bennett would prefer a clearcut line between their two schools, with strict out -of-zone policies, to help stabilise their roll numbers.

Vauxhall School principal Gary Lawrence is taking a different approach. His school currently has 100 out-of-zone students, more than a third of the school’s roll. DPS has 12 out-of-zone students and SBS 20.

Vauxhall has 296 students this year, up from 281 in 2016. Only last month, Lawrence closed off the school’s out-of-zone enrolment for next year “to prevent overcrowding,” he says.

An element of competition does exist between the schools. For example, principals’ salaries depend on the number of students enrolled, Vinton says.

However, there is a silver lining in having a roll that’s not bursting at the seams. Both Bennett and Vinton plan on using their spare classrooms as art or science rooms and to accommodate their after-school programmes.

But it’s not ideal. “If a classroom is not used as a classroom but as a resource room, the ministry won’t pay to maintain it,” Bennett says. Other funding is also determined by roll numbers.

Vinton has had to cut two teacher positions this year due to funding constraints.

Both principals have noticed the effects of the growing number of working parents, more after-school programmes and a significant dropoff in parent help.

“We used to have to pull the names of parents who could come on school trips and to camp out of a hat. Those numbers have significantly dropped off recently. It’s still enough parents coming, but not as many putting their hand up as in the past,” says Vinton.

A higher than usual number of houses appear to be for sale in the vicinity of the proposed Ryman Healthcare retirement village proposed for Ngataringa Rd. A survey last week of Devonport properties for sale on the Real Estate New Zealand website showed six houses near the village site on the market: 82/2 Ngataringa Rd, 3a Wesley Rd, 24 Ngataringa Rd, 42 Ngataringa Rd, 34 Ngataringa Rd, and 40 Ngataringa Rd. There has been a steady number of sales in this area over recent months.

Obviously not all the sales would be due to the impending village, but three years of construction, noise and disruption to traffic would have a huge bearing on some residents’ decisions to sell.

I have done the Coast to Coast walk twice – taking in Mt Eden (no cars) and One Tree Hill (cars by the bucketload zooming to the top).

The contrast is marked. I would encourage anyone who has an opinion about vehicle access to the top of the Maunga to compare the two. It may alter a few views.

The notion that car is king has shaped Auckland’s planning decisions for decades.

Times are changing as the realisation that more cars create more congestion hits home.

Ryman application should be rejected Sounds like a party. Guy Fawkes is gone, the Food and Wine is gone, but we still have the fiascos that council present. Ryman’s party is next. Brooke Dales, town planner extraordinaire from DCS Ltd. They are the private consultants paid to entertain us at this Ryman death-row party: paid by council using your money, our rates.

The party council has sent out invites for is using commercial outsourced planners as insurance cover. How does Dales get to reinvent the Unitary Plan and its policies and restrictions? Why would Dales twist the assessment to read “less than minor”?

Clearly the monstrosity is way outside of the Unitary Plan’s assessment rules and policies.

What fee has DCS been paid – how much?

How does Dales figure a site that could have had say 40 houses on it, and say 160 residents, will have the same traffic impact as a 395-bed business with 100 special-needs beds, and probably 100 staff changing three times a day.

Visitors, suppliers – it’s all traffic.The total traffic will be far more than the area would impose if it were normal housing.

It’s rubbish.

We have just witnessed by the Esplanade hotel a roading contract with four square metres concrete cut into a brand-new road – three weeks’ closure, 24-hour security, no doubt at ratepayer-gouging price. We are watching Stephen Borlase and Murray Noone in court for alleged corruption, backhanders and favours. This is reality.

Our local MP Maggie Barry’s sign invited me to address her with concerns. However, she reckons I’m a nutter so that closes that enquiry as to who’s monitoring the validity of these contracts – and indeed the validity of the Ryman party application and the assessments made by town planners.

Speciality food shops on the wharf I agree with Lyndsay Brock (Flagstaff, 18 November) that Auckland Transport (AT) is barking up the wrong tree with the idea of speciality food shops on Devonport wharf. We have been there before. Not even a farmers’ market once a week was able to survive on the wharf. We don’t need more food shops (speciality or not) sucking the patronage out of existing food shops in the village. Tourists and commuters are a fickle customer base, and some of the current shops, such as the coffee shop, and bicycle hire, have been able to carve out a niche for themselves.

AT should be supporting the shops that are currently successful, consulting with locals, and thinking creatively about what other kinds of small businesses might be attractive for tourists, commuters and locals. Hopefully Devonport residents who feel similarly will make their views known to AT and the local board.

I usually travel to work in central Auckland by ferry or a combination of car and bus.

So I was delighted to hear about Auckland Transport’s new park and ride at the Harbourside Church on Esmonde Rd, which was ‘launched’ on Monday 28 November.

Despite feeling the advertised $1 parking fee was contrary to the spirit of park and ride, I decided to give it a go two days later.

I had expected the car park to be full when I arrived shortly before 9am and was surprised to be one of only two vehicles. I went to get my $1 parking ticket from the machine, only to find that I needed to have some app installed for that tariff, and the cost was $2. After grudgingly buying my

which also serves the writers’ centre and public tennis courts, would be a most unreasonable and needless loss of citizen rights.

You see daily, numerous locals and visitors, including many elderly people, enjoying harbour and gulf views from the peak in the comfort of their car in all weather.

Mt Victoria is much loved and respected by all, and is a major tourist draw to Devonport.

It should be left as it is.

parking ticket, I had to walk back to the main entrance to get onto Esmonde Rd, where I looked for the new temporary bus stops that I had read about. Except I couldn’t find them and there was no signage to direct me, and no hope of flagging down a passing bus as there was nowhere obvious for it to safely pull in and stop.

I could have walked along Esmonde Rd, alongside the traffic, to Akoranga, or back up the road to the regular bus stop opposite Burns Ave. But that wasn’t the point of using the park and ride. I didn’t want to leave my car in the middle of an unsecured car park, and an invitation to car thieves. It was also an unlit location that I didn’t feel happy returning to by myself in the evening after work.

So I walked back to my car, with the intention of parking where I usually leave my car when I get the bus. Except of course time was ticking away and I had to be at work. Much as I hate to admit it, I decided instead to drive my car into town, and make up for lost time.

So Auckland Transport, why did you annouce this service before it was ready to use?

It’s a great concept, but poorly executed. And why are you using a private operator (and its app) to charge public transport users, instead of making it easier and cheaper for us to get on board the buses? I was disappointed (and late for work).

Backyard available to Ryman – for discussion with locals With regards to the Ryman Healthcare retirement village proposal – I’m a yes in my backyard (YIMBY), not a NIMBY. The potential for a world-class village on a unique piece of land that would benefit residents, provide jobs, allow others to love the uber-friendly Ngataringa neighbourhood as much as existing residents do is exciting.

But when we’ve been handed a mediocre cookie-cutter design; when Ryman declines to consult with us; when Auckland Council advises the multiple multistorey buildings will have minor impact on existing residents and the environment, including the national taonga that is Polly’s Park; when we’re facing a two-three-year construction project that will further constipate Lake

Rd, as will traffic from future staff and residents, all I can see is major heartache and headache ahead.

I want none of that in my backyard.

If Ryman would like to come and talk to those of us looking to make their village a positive part of our village, then I’m offering my backyard to host that discussion Margaret Taylor

Council bullying board to return to secret workshop With public trust in Auckland Council down to 15 per cent it’s senseless for council to force the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board to return to having secret workshops against the wishes of local citizens.

Even if the secret workshop is not making any formal decisions, the perception is that the board sorts it out there and then and at the later board meeting it is seen as only rubber-stamping the decision that has already been made.

In the last term while I was chair of the board I instituted community briefings to enable the public to be present to hear presentations from Council staff and the opportunity for the public to interact with the board.

In our local board area, we are fortunate to have many local people with local knowledge, experience, and professional expertise respected nationally and internationally. It

would be irresponsible to limit the availability of potential options to progress great local initiatives or tackle local problems if we curtailed the ability to tap into this amazing resource.

Local boards are the governance at the “coalface”, and to be effective and trusted requires people to feel ownership of their local board. They must be able to interact and participate with their local board, be taken seriously and feel that they can influence what happens in their neighbourhood and street – that they can make a difference.

Open meetings are imperative if local people are to have trust and confidence in their local government.

After all, it’s called democracy, isn’t it?

A Housing New Zealand property at Narrow Neck has been demolished.

The house at 14 Achilles Crescent had been unoccupied for several years, all the while Auckland was experiencing a housing shortage.

The property was understood to be structurally unsound.

Housing New Zealand has not said what will happen to the vacant site.

Duo Tapas with the Devonport Chamber Orchestra The most recent concert of the Devonport Chamber Orchestra at Holy Trinity Church, on Sunday 13th November, featured Duo Tapas. This Wellington-based duo of Rupa Maitra (violin) and Owen Moriarty (guitar) has performed before in Devonport, both in solo recital and with the Devonport Chamber Orchestra. What a winning team, ably supported by the orchestra led by Helen Crook and conducted by Warwick Robinson.

The programme provided opportunities for each soloist to present a work – Maitra in Bach’s A minor Violin Concerto and Moriarty in Guitar Concerto in A major by Giuliani.

The Bach was played with great sensitivity of phrasing and beauty of tone and tempo. The orchestra provided solid support throughout.

The opening movement, with its sunny and joyous optimism, was followed by a very serene interpretation of the slow movement, before the lively and vigorous final movement.

The Giuliani was less familiar, one of three written by this composer in the early 19th century during a period of great development

in guitar repertoire. The three movements were based on dances of the time. Moriarty was more than equal to the challenges of the virtuosic writing, producing technical brilliance as well as stylish rubato and bell-like tone.

The most challenging of the programme’s three works was the Concerto for Violin and Guitar by Alan Thomas. Composed in 2009, originally for flute and guitar, the work is equally effective for violin and guitar. The performers who originally commissioned it were from Bosnia and Spain, and the work draws on the folk melodies and rhythms of those two countries. Although obviously technically very testing with its rapid variations in tempo and rhythm, it was instantly accessible to the audience, and the soloists and orchestra were equal to its challenges, as the audience’s enthusiastic response demonstrated.

This was the Devonport Chamber Orchestra’s final concert for 2016. Regular and loyal audience members will be looking forward keenly to what feasts may be in store in 2017.

Local achievers win AIMES awards Devonport’s Olympic bronze medalist, pole-vaulter Eliza McCartney, won this year’s top North Harbour Club award.

McCartney won the Supreme AIMES award of $30,000, plus the AIMES Sport Award of $5,000.

Ella Yelich-O’Connor, who was in the same year as McCartney at Takapuna Grammar School (TGS), won the Supreme Award two years ago.

Former TGS student and musical theatre student at the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts, Andrew Coshan (23) won the Emerging Talent award of $5,000.

Devonport sailing sisters Kate (18) and Greta (16) Stewart won an $8,000 Emerging Talent award for their yachting achievements. They are currently living in Bermuda and are sailing for New Zealand.

The Navy CommuNiTy NewsleTTer

The royal New Zealand Navy would like to thank Devonport residents for your support during our recent international Naval review (iNr).

This was a fantastic occasion, as we celebrated our 75th anniversary as the Royal New Zealand Navy with our friends, neighbours and partners.

We were also proud to help those in need following the Kaikoura earthquake. Hundreds of tonnes of vital supplies were delivered to the seaside community and nearly 1000 people rescued as part of the New Zealand Defence Force response.

The naval response included the amphibious sealift vessel HMNZS CANTERBURY, offshore patrol vessel HMNZS WELLINGTON, frigate HMNZS TE KAHA and replenishment tanker HMNZS ENDEAVOUR and all

their crew. Visiting ships, in New Zealand for our 75th, also quickly set sail for Kaikoura to help with the emergency response.

The INR got underway with a fleet entry on 16 November, when six New Zealand warships, one New Zealand tall ship and 11 international ships entered Auckland Harbour from all over the world.

At the ships’ Open Day on 20 November, 35,000 people took the opportunity to visit 10 ships that opened their decks to the public.

Many Devonport residents were among those who took the opportunity to visit the ships.

On 22 November, HMNZS TE KAHA, as task force leader for the naval response to the Kaikoura earthquake, led USS SAMPSON, HMCS VANCOUVER, HMNZS ENDEAVOUR and HMAS DARWIN into Auckland.

Trailers are being reported stolen Auckland-wide and since 16 October there have been nine trailers and a caravan stolen from the peninsula. Investigations are continuing.

It is wise to install a good quality coupling lock and wheel clamp to keep your trailer secure. Keep trailers out of sight where possible and call 111 if you see any suspicious behaviour in your street.

Thefts from vehicles have continued in the Hauraki area with four vehicles targeted overnight on November 24 and 29. Personal belongings, bags and ICT equipment have been taken.

The Allen Hill Stadium – home to North Shore United Football Club – was subjected to a burglary, damage and graffiti sometime during the weekend of November 19. Doors were

jemmied open, furniture moved and bike racks damaged. Neon orange spray paint was used to graffiti inside the garage, and on advertising boards, a ride-on mower, goalposts, buildings and roofs. This damage is disappointing to club members and visitors to the club, so please help us by reporting any persons seen tagging or doing graffiti in our area – call 111.

As this is the final Flagstaff issue of the year, I would like to remind everyone to keep their property safe from burglars over the holiday season.

• Always lock up when you leave the house – even for a short period.

• Lock the front door if you’re in the back garden, having a rest or doing something that needs a lot of concentration.

• Lock away tools and ladders, as burglars could use them to break in.

• Lock garden sheds and your garage.

• Keep bicycles and other valuable items locked inside your garage.

• Install sensor lights and ensure they are working.

• Keep trees and shrubs trimmed so they don’t provide hiding places for burglars.

• Keep windows secure.

• Keep valuable possessions out of obvious view.

• Guard your keys. Don’t have personal details on your keys.

• Don’t invite burglars in – never leave notes on a door stating that you are out.

• Know your neighbour – ask them to keep watch while you’re away and clear your mailbox.

• Put a lamp on a timer.

• Keep curtains open and blinds up.

• Use a house-sitter.

• Don’t let people into the house that you don’t know. The thieves normally come in pairs and one will keep you occupied at the front door whilst the other, who has used the excuse to use the toilet, will be rummaging in the bedroom.

Christmas is now just around the corner Anyone starting to feel the pressure yet?

We do it all wrong in New Zealand; save our precious holidays for the summertime, and don’t have a decent break mid-year, usually due to it being winter. By the time summer and Christmas (which should be relaxed and fun) arrives, we are completely exhausted. My first piece of advice is to take a week off in July, even just to mooch around at home with your trackies on, reading a book. Music, art, and conservation make the world go round

It’s great to see that Depot Artspace will be hosting the internationally celebrated travelling exhibition Rembrandt Remastered from December 18th to February 19th.

This is 50 digital reproductions of paintings by the Dutch master based on photographs, each life-sized reproduction “remastered” to reflect what the painting looked like when it was completed 400 years ago. As Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage, I see the local support for these life-enriching events as evidence of a thriving arts and culture sector.

The Peninsula has nurtured many musicians including Lorde, along with budding garage bands, honing their skills. I was pleased to welcome a music industry economic report showing the sector’s $245 million contribution to the economy. Music makes a rich contribution culturally, economically, and socially, and our Government contributes $1.85 million to the New Zealand Music Commission

while NZ On Air contributes about $4 million a year towards a range of music products.

It’s been a busy few months with my Ministerial responsibilities and I’m looking forward to spending more time in the ‘hood’ over the summer.

I’ve just returned from an international convention on biodiversity in Mexico where I released a new action plan setting out 20 specific targets for protection of our unique native flora and fauna. New Zealand’s Biodiversity Action Plan 2016-2020 details how we intend to turn the tide of species and habitat loss and counter the predator threats to our vulnerable native species. Our targets and strategy includes Predator Free 2050 committing us to ridding New Zealand of rats, stoats, and possums.

Halting biodiversity decline is a massive challenge internationally and on the home front we need to join forces with others because it’s the only way we can achieve our ambitious goals. With collaboration between DOC, other Government and local body agencies, iwi, communities, private landowners, philanthropists, and business we can achieve the goal.

I’ve recently announced a stellar board to lead the new crown-owned organisation that’ll make decisions about the landscape pest controls needed to secure a long-term, toxinfree future. As the MP for North Shore I’m very encouraged to see the enthusiasm of our local groups to be predator free. In the New Year, Doc’s threatened species ambassador, Nicola Toki, will be helping pull together a coordinated strategy for us with

funding and self-resetting traps so that we can achieve the dream of a predator-free Devonport Peninsula. See www.doc.govt.nz for the Action Plan.

Having presented papers at the Edinburgh Cultural Festival, Our Oceans Conference in Washington, Antarctica for Sir Ed’s heritage hut restoration, and biodiversity in Mexico over the past four months, I’m planning a relaxing staycation this summer. I intend to spend as much time as I can with extended family and catching up with friends at home in Stanley Point, getting the garden into shape, polishing up the paddleboard skills, and fingers are crossed for BBQ dinners courtesy of the son and heir.

I laid the groundwork with last year’s Christmas present when I unashamedly included a voucher for a BBQ-cooking and salad making course for both Joe and partner Grant so I have high hopes of me being the kitchenhand this summer. We’re also planning on putting our new electric bikes through their paces and zipping up and down a much less congested Lake Road to sample all that’s on offer at the best beaches in the country.

My Takapuna office will be closed over the statutory break but we’ll be back early in 2017 refreshed and ready to greet the year with gusto, so please don’t hesitate to contact me if I can help. Public-access blocked… local board member Mike Cohen stands his ground A formal complaint about the closed-off public walkway on Devonport Wharf seems to be falling on deaf ears at Auckland Transport.

Devonport-Takapuna Local Board member Mike Cohen says he complained to the council-controlled organisation months ago that residents can no longer walk under the wharf building’s canopy, which was designed as a public walkway to and from the ferry.

Instead, Devon on the Wharf uses the area as part of its premises. They walled the area off, filled it with cane furniture and then sealed it off with plastic, says Cohen.

“Now it’s impossible to walk through there,” he says.

Cohen says he made his first complaint

in August, after the café opened. He did not receive a response and has now complained again, he says.

“If any of our other local cafes did something like this, they would get a ticket straight away. In fact, they have just been punished simply for having their signs on a public walkway,” he says.

Cohen is concerned a business supported by council appears to be given special treatment. “When I called to follow up on my complaint, they couldn’t find it and said it must have been lost,” he says.

The Windsor Reserve oak tree – threatened with the chop to make room for a bigger playground – has been saved.

After public consultation on the new playground design “revealed a 50-50 split over the idea of removing or keeping the tree, the decision was made to retain it,” says John Schernbrucker, Head of Project Delivery at Auckland Council.

At least one anonymous local felt strongly enough about the tree that yellow ribbons were tied around its trunk with a message to save the historic tree.

The oak was planted 63 years ago by Devonport Mayor C.F. Woodall and his wife to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on June 2, 1953.

The initial concept design for the playground’s major revamp will now have to be significantly adjusted, Schernbrucker says.

On a high‌ the multiple medalists at Stanley Bay school Stanley Bay School’s trampolinists are celebrating some high-flying successes in the North Harbour Schools Trampoline Competition.

Students came away with four gold medals, three silvers and one bronze medal.The school also won both the junior (Year 0-4) and senior (Year 5-6) division primary school trophies.

Twenty Stanley Bay School students competed in the event. It was the first trampoline competition for many of them, says teacher Maria Adam.
