24-hour liquor ban for Ngataringa Park Ngataringa Park now has a 24-hour liquor ban - after an eleventh hour submission on crime at the reserve.

At one stage council was planning to remove the liquor ban completely from Ngataringa Park, home to a skate bowl.

However a fight to keep and extend the ban was mounted by Devonport-Takapuna Local Board member Mike Cohen.

The extended liquor-ban hours are based on evidence he gathered of alcohol-related broken glass, litter, vandalism, fires, noise, intimidating behaviour and past disturbances, especially on weekends, at night and more so in the summer.

“After we hadn’t received any submissions on that park, I spoke to Lyndsay Brock and Roger Giles and other people who know a lot about the area and put together a late submission with all the relevant evidence that ended up supporting an extended ban,” Cohen said.

Local liquor bans have been mostly retained on the Devonport Peninsula, despite a recent Auckland-wide by-law review that proposed areas be freed up where problems were limited.

Of the 13 liquor bans between Hauraki Corner and Devonport, four will lapse on

October 31, three of them at the northern end of the peninsula: • Charles Reserve in Hauraki • Jutland Reserve in Hauraki • Napier-Harley Reserve in Hauraki • Stanley Bay beach and foreshore reserve Bans are retained in the Belmont and Devonport town centres, on the Bayswater foreshore, St. Leonards, Narrow Neck and Cheltenham beaches, and George Gair Reserve. But the liquor ban hours are now: 10 pm until 7 am during daylight savings and from 7 pm until 7 am for the rest of the year.

The review of existing liquor bans was prompted by the Alcohol Control Bylaw 2014 and a requirement of the Local Government Act that states liquor bans need to be based on evidence that areas have “experienced a high level of crime or disorder that can be shown to have been caused or made worse by alcohol consumption in the area.”

Auckland-wide, alcohol bans have been more than halved due to the review, reducing from 1,630 to 726.

Signage with details on the bans will go up across the peninsula over the next few months, starting with Devonport village.

A major rewrite of the Ngataringa Park Plan has begun, prompted in part by resident concerns about North Shore United Football Club expansion plans.

A small group of Abbotsford Tce and Victoria Rd neighbours has opposed the installation of artificial turf and floodlights on the soccer fields of Dacre Park.

Now Auckland Council has decided to spend $20,000 rewriting plans for the park, which were redone only three years ago.

However, the new management plan will have wider scope and include not only Ngataringa Park but also Dacre Park and 27 Lake Road.

Three years ago, plans to develop Ngataringa Park were adopted by Devonport-Takapuna Local Board, but were never implemented due to a lack of funds. The plan included a redeveloped skatepark.

Since the old plan was produced the whole area is set to change, a report to the board says.

“Chief amongst the concerns is the intended development of the soccer fields at Dacre Park and what associated facilities may be required to ease the concerns of local residents,” it says.

Key new issues include: access to Dacre Park, traffic management, parking and management of noise, limited car parking at Ngataringa Park and compromised access to Lake Rd. “Staff are also mindful of the imminent upgrade of the refuse transfer facilities on part of 27 Lake Road and the creation of a modern recycling centre.

“In addition, concerns about the condition of part of the cap covering the old landfill that now forms Ngataringa Park has compromised some of the original development intentions for that site.”

The footprint of the Ngataringa Organic Garden has also changed since the 2012 plan, the report says.

The Vic does the Time Warp again Halloween comes alive at the Vic with a special themed performance of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, organised by local architecture student Matt Owens.

The 1975 cult movie has been screening at the Vic regularly for more than a year.

Owens is part of the Rocky Horror Picture Show shadow-casting group Hot & Flustered.

“We basically dress up as the movie’s characters and mime the show. We put on a full performance while the movie runs behind us and we let the movie do the sound for it all,” he says.

The movie screens every second month and this October is their eighth Vic event. Shadow-cast members have created a Halloween theme. Owens plays Rocky, the laboratory creation of Frank N. Furter.

New dog-friendly beaches launched Dogs are now allowed at all times on St Leonards Beach and the small beach on the western side of Devonport Wharf under new rules.

The rocky area and beach strip from Buchanan St to Devonport Yacht club is also open to dogs all year round.

Dogs are allowed in these areas on or off the leash.

Dogs are allowed at Windsor Reserve Beach all year round as well, but the have to be on a lead.

So this enables dog owners to take their pets to the beach over summer.

New dog rules are no walk in the park Taking your dog out is no longer a walk in the park on the Devonport peninsula.

A confusing smorgasbord of new dog-access rules for local beaches, foreshore areas and parks came into effect last weekend.

The chances that dog owners and their canine friends will put a foot and paw wrong are highly likely, due to a quagmire of on-and-off leash rules, and times and places where the regulations apply.

The rules are so varied that they are hard to navigate without an extensive map – or even with one.

Beaches and foreshore In general, the Devonport peninsula’s eastern beaches and foreshore are now more restricted for dogs all year round, and the western beaches only in the winter.

On the peninsula’s harbour side, dogs are now prohibited at all times on the foreshore and shell banks of Shoal Bay from Esmonde Rd to Sandy Bay Rd, as well as on the shell banks of Ngataringa Bay, to protect wildlife.

Dogs can continue to be walked on-leash on the Shoal Bay foreshore between Sandy Bay Rd and all of Ngataringa Bay foreshore.

On eastern beaches, dogs continue to be banned from 10 am until 6.30 pm between Labour Day weekend and March 31. They are allowed off-leash for the rest of the time.

In winter, dogs will now have to be on the leash between 10 am and 2 pm and are allowed to be off-leash the rest of the time.

Parks Dogs have to be on-leash at all times on Windsor Reserve, Queens Pde Reserve, King Edward Pde Reserve, boardwalks and bridges.

New restrictions apply in parks adjacent to beaches, such as Narrow Neck Beach Reserve, Woodall Park, Bath Street Reserve, Balmain Reserve, Cheltenham Beach Reserve, Torpedo Bay Reserve and Stanley Bay Reserve.

Summer hours to walk dogs on a leash are 10 am until 6.30pm. Dogs can otherwise be off-leash. In winter, dogs have to be on leash from 10 am until 2 pm.

Interesting times for St Leonards beach.

At one time it was a nude beach and at some stage crossed over to a gay beach – where events of gay abandon were of such a nature they occasionally attracted police attention.

A little difficult to access, but now it seems it will become a dog beach. Under new council by-laws, dogs can be exercised at St Leonards year-round – winter and summer – with none of the restricted hours that apply to other Devonport beaches; except, that is, the little beach on the western side of Devonport wharf and the one along the waterfront near Devonport Yacht Club, which are both similarly dog-friendly all year.

Personally I think it is a great move to give dog owners the option to take their pet to the beach in summer.

Most Devonport dogs – and their owners - are well trained and shouldn’t be denied a trip to the beach and a quick dip in the height of summer.

Overall though, the new dog laws are way too complicated – a mixture of “on-leash” “off-leash” areas that would require even the most fastidious dog owner to carry a small map around to know what is permitted.

on-leash, off-leash differentiation.

Dogs simply needed to be kept under control, which seemed a much easier system for owners to understand.

Now some people think I don’t get out enough.Well I took myself off to Napier a couple of weekends ago. It was the NZ Squash Masters nationals, but I did get the chance to have a quick look around the art deco city.

Apart from fantastic preservation of the buildings, what struck me was the care and attention paid to the civic gardens.

They offered a great framework to showcase the centre of the city and were attractive to tourists and locals alike. And yes, there were rows and rows of flowerbeds.

As Auckland Council cuts costs, and the parks and open places move towards cheaper planting options, Devonport’s public flower gardens days appear to be numbered.

But if Devonport is to retain a modicum of interest to tourists, it can ill afford to lose the little touches like our public flowerbeds.

News that the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon has been canned at Narrow Neck Beach will be greeted with glee by those trapped in Devonport by the huge congestion on Lake Rd on the day of the event.

However, it was great for local kids as well, and with its move out of the area, another bit of colour has gone from the streets, as well as custom to local businesses.

More could have been done to bus in entrants from park and rides at Smales Farm, and even from Auckland city.

What makes a ‘classic’ car?

There’s a question to set off some lively banter around the pub table. (Or is it just on an internet forum these days? Same thing but no pint ‘n’ peanuts!)

So really, what is a ‘classic’, and when? Those learned souls at publications like New Zealand Classic Car will no doubt have some in-trade definitions for you, but personally I think it’s a blurry line between ‘classic’ and ‘old rubbish’.

Does being old make something classic?

And how old? My Dad is old, and still runs well; one careful owner (my mum), but is he a ‘classic’? Or a well-maintained original?

There is a lot of talk about when something is a ‘modern classic’ (Mazda MX5, you are guilty as charged on this one), and maybe that just means a lot of people bought one and there are still plenty around if you want one. Maybe that’s just marketing talk bandied around by owners clubs to make their cars worth more….

I can tell you with confidence that the current crop of ‘all designed in the same studio’ euromarket sedans don’t contain any ‘classic cars’ of the future. I am thinking maybe a classic has to be a little bit rubbish to be a little bit different.

Perhaps that is the point?

Long time Devonport residents Bryan and Hilary Skinner have been running their award winning design business Skinner Design for 40 years.

But I also acknowledge that traffic has been an issue,” he says.

“We expressed our concerns about the traffic to council staff in the past, but it looks as if now the event organisers themselves decided to look for a place where they can grow their North Shore event. They felt they had outgrown the peninsula and were looking for more commercial scope.

“With the Lake Road traffic issues, that wasn’t going to happen here. Further north they will be able to add to their catchment of people as well, I suspect,” he says.

To Janzen the move to Whangaparaoa doesn’t make sense. “I’m surprised they moved it there because that’s just another peninsula and traffic is likely to be an issue there as well,” she says.

The Flagstaff contacted event organisers but did not get a response before going to press.

A prominent waterfront tree has gone after Auckland Council axed blanket tree-protection rules earlier this year, legalising the removal of most trees in Devonport.

The owner of 38 King Edward Parade, who declined to be named, said she initially only wanted to prune the pohutukawa that was in the front yard of her new home. But after a local arborist advised that there were no restrictions on the tree and she could do what she liked, she decided to chop it down.

“I did it with a heavy heart and it was a very considered decision. We started with the intention to prune it away from our roofline and after two hours of pruning only a third of the tree was left over and it just looked ridiculous, a bit like a Dr Seuss tree,” she said.

Apparently there were only six of us left.

When I first heard about this I thought maybe the wharf might be treated a bit differently due to the convenience of buying the paper to read on the harbour trip. But I went to the meeting of the affected sellers on Thursday 22nd and found this wasn’t the case.

I’m NOT pleading particularly hard done by or anything, but I just thought I’d let everyone know why I’m not selling the Herald at the Devonport ferry building after October, because there has been some consternation (impressed?) as to why this has happened.

The Herald has decided to lay off ALL street sellers because due to the internet etc

I’m afraid I found the whole experience a bit demeaning really, with the initial meeting being a bit like a C-grade drama and the following meeting being B-grade. However we were PAID OUT with a bottle of wine and a box of chocolates plus a card signed by a few well-wishers. So we didn’t come out of it all with nothing.

I would just like to thank everyone that I came in contact with over the six years on the wharf and hope to see you all around now and then, as I will be around Devonport for quite a while yet doing my various jobs in the township (including TAGBUSTER). I would like to remind yous about my raffles (drawn at the end of the month) as these will be a bit of a stopgap.

Retain annual flowers I was very disappointed to read that Devonport’s annual flowers may only be back for one year. Like local board member Mike Cohen, “I think it is really important we make ourselves heard when we value something.”

However, at this time it is even more important for all of us to use flowering plants, as bees are seriously threatened. They are being starved to death by lack of feed, we are warned. One special plant called Dombeya is great for beees as it flowers in winter. I intend to encourage my friends to plant it. Losing our bees would be a disaster.

Stitching her story from Dundee to Devonport Contemporary textile artist Freda Brierley has taken on the history of art for an upcoming exhibition Threads of Time. She has recreated renowned pieces of art – from a cave painting and Egyptian portrait all the way to works by Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso and Francis Bacon – stitch by stitch on her sewing machine.

She spoke to Maire Vieth.

Freda Brierley uses her Bernina Virtuosa sewing machine like a paint brush, capturing light or shade often three stitches at a time.

To call her technique intricate is an understatement. When I visited Brierley in her Narrow Neck home, she had just finished the golden halos of two saints. But instead of using golden thread, she had used eight different variants of yellow rayon to mix her own shade to capture the particular way gold reflects light.

“I wanted to reproduce the feeling of gold without actually using it,” she said.

Brierley says completing 30 pieces of art history for Threads of Time, her first solo show since 2009, has been a challenge but intensely rewarding at the same time.

Born in Scotland in 1942, Brierley dreamed about going to art school from childhood. But she had to wait until she travelled across the world. Seven years after arriving in New Zealand, she fulfilled that dream when she was accepted to Whitecliffe Art School in 1989, at the age of 47.

Brierley has been making art ever since.

She has exhibited throughout New Zealand, the UK, the US and France. In 1995, Brierley won first prize at the Royal Easter Show and was part of a travelling exhibition to Kentucky. A year later she was part of Under the Southern Skies, a show of contemporary New Zealand art at the Barbican Theatre in London. Since 2000, she has shown at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts in Wellington, the Musée Textile de Wesserling in Alsace, Christchurch Art Gallery and Auckland Museum to name just a few.

Brierley has been featured in books too.

Helen Schamroth’s 1998 collection 100 New Zealand Craft Artists and Ann Packer’s 2006 book Stitch: Contemporary New Zealand Artists (both published by Random House) showcase her work.

Stiches in time...Freda Brierley is an artist with thread in her veins est city in Scotland, Brierley settled in Devonport reluctantly more than three decades ago. Her yearning for home was the common thread in much of her previous work.

Even before she left Scotland, she embroidered a simple map of her home-town.

“It’s the River Tay in Dundee and the old buildings that were around at the time. The ship in the water is the whaling ship my grandfather worked on as a ship’s carpenter.

The white buildings are the mental hospital.

That’s where I should be,” she laughs.

Describing Which Way Home, an abstract embroidery swirl of an anguished woman’s body in a tumbling sea of white, she says: “Here I am tearing myself out of the blanket of Britain, passing the standing stones, the people I left that wouldn’t grow old in my mind, I am swirling through the world and landing in this really bright place,” she says.

In October 1981, New Zealand’s bright summer sun staggered Brierley after leaving Scotland at the start of winter. She still avoids it. In her lounge, she likes to keep the blinds closed during the day. Outdoor living has no appeal either. “Why on earth would you want to live in the garden?” she laughs.

Brierley started embroidering as a young girl. “My mother taught me the very basics,

like lazy daisy stitches on tea cloths and chair backs. I suppose because I was an only child and the weather wasn’t good to be running around outside and we didn’t have a big garden, so it was a good way to keep me quiet,” she says.

Colours were her love right from the start.

“There used to be a draper’s shop quite near us and it used to have a tall cabinet full of drawers with all these embroidery colours; one drawer had every shade of red, the other every shade of blue, and so on.

“My mother would often buy me a little doily with the design stamped on and allow me to have a few colours from the drawers and it was such a hard choice. I loved looking at the threads lying in rainbow-like rows in my converted biscuit tin,” says Brierley.

Working with textiles was a family tradition. Her mother sewed clothes out of necessity and her grandmother had worked in one of Dundee’s jute mills since the age of 12, rising through the mill’s hierarchy to become a weaver.

At school, Brierley developed a passion for drawing and painting and dreamed about studying art after graduating, but was discouraged by her parents. “My father thought it was a stupid thing to be wanting to do.

October 30, 2015 There was a big art school in Dundee and we used to see the art students wandering about, with beards and sandals and duffel coats. ‘That scruffy look,’ he used to say, ‘you’re not going there.’

“They wanted me to have a sensible job, something that would stand me in good stead in case I didn’t get married. My father said I should go to Marks and Spencer and sell nutty toffee, which he liked to eat, so I could slip him some. But I remembered meeting a great aunt who had been a missionary nurse in the Congo and it sounded like such a wonderful job, and exotic, to be in Africa, so I became a registered nurse,” she says.

Brierley studied general nursing from 1960 until 1963 at Dundee Royal Infirmary, but going to Africa lost its appeal. Instead, she trained as a midwife at the Fulford Maternity Hospital in York in 1964. “But I didn’t like that either. It was just at the end of the Thalidomide tragedy and it was also hard work. I worked in the District of York and had to run around on a bicycle in the wee hours of the night and day and when no one was having a baby I had to stay in with nothing to do,” she says.

“Once I pleaded to go and see a movie. I had to take the midwifery bag with me and tell the lady at the desk who I was if anyone rang. So in the middle of the movie, they put a notice up across the screen, saying, ‘Freda Selway please report to the front desk’. I never did that again,” she says.

Instead, Brierley applied to the Royal Navy as a Naval nursing sister in Queen Alexandra’s Nursing Service, where she met her future husband Kenneth Brierley at a Naval party. They married and moved up and down the country for a few years with Ken’s job as a Naval recruiter. After their children Jean and Richard were born, they bought a house in Dundee near Freda’s family.

Then Ken became homesick. “He was yearning for New Zealand and I didn’t want to go. I was living in this city with my father and mother and aunts and uncles on the doorstep and thought in New Zealand I won’t know a soul, not a soul. But he got all melancholy and I had to bite the bullet.

I had had him in Britain for so long, it was my turn to reciprocate,” she says.

Ken transferred from the Royal Navy in Dundee to the Royal New Zealand Navy in Devonport. Two years later, Freda’s parents Jane and Fred Selway followed and happily settled nearby. Freda helped out at school groups and at Belmont’s St. Margaret’s Church, where a new friend invited her along to the Auckland Embroiderers’ Guild.

“I was a bit afraid to go because it sounded so professional but I found they were all very nice people doing cross-stitch from kitsets. So to be one of the girls, I did it too for a while, but I found it so mind-numbing that I couldn’t keep it up,” she says.

School for a year-long Diploma of Arts course.

“You had to bring along something arty to the interview so I brought a winter tree I had embroidered and Greg Whitecliffe really liked it. I learned all about design and colour and to draw and to paint.

“I was hungry when I went to art school and when I came out of it, I was starving.

So I signed up for more classes with Allie Eagle in Ponsonby for a while, because I wanted to keep learning,” she says.

In 1990, the Wellington Shakespeare Society recruited Brierley as an embroiderer for a stage curtain of the Globe reproduction theatre in London. Well-known theatre designer Raymond Boyce created the lifesize curtain design and parts of it were sent

Brierley also belonged to the core team of embroiderers who assembled the curtain.

“I used to go up and down to Wellington.

When all the pieces came back, we appliqued them onto a piece of special New Zealand wool that had been dyed and flameproofed,” she says.

The $1.3 million curtain, sponsored by the Arts Council and Air New Zealand, went on a two-year exhibition tour through New Zealand and a year-long international tour, to Australia, the US and Canada, before heading to the UK for yet another year-long tour until the Globe opened in 1997.

“It was during that time that I discovered the sewing machine as an art tool. I had some idea that using the machine to embroider would speed up the whole creative process. All I can say now is that it takes even longer but I find it liberating and enjoy how it demands quick decision-making,” she says.

Brierley still returns to the Northern Hemisphere regularly. “I go on these art tours with a group of people. I was in Venice last year, and have been to Spain and to Italy twice. When I go that side of the world, I always pop in to Scotland and the relatives. And they stay in touch too. My aunt just wrote to me. She still thinks letters go on a big boat and take weeks to get to New Zealand so I usually get her Christmas cards in October.”

No lounging around for Ross in his Lazy Boy Author Ross Doughty is rarely lost for words.

The 74-year-old Devonport resident recently completed a Master of Creative Writing with First Class Honours. He published his thesis as a book: Turning in the Wind.

“I’m actually very proud of getting the Honours at my age,” he says.

Turning in the Wind comprises a novella and 10 short stories that portray New Zealanders at home and in various places around the world.

There is one about a Portuguese explorer coming to New Zealand before Tasman, one about the Boer War based out of Dunedin and another about a Portuguese boy running off to sea and ending up in Australia.

“I place my characters in a moral, legal or situational dilemma, often of their own making. The resolutions vary considerably,” says Doughty.

Doughty’s thesis supervisor was Devonport poet Michelle Leggott, and his writing partner was a young film scriptwriter from India who worked on an anime novel.

“We all clicked instantly,” he says. Was he the oldest student on the course? “No, I would have thought so but one person was older than me.”

The retired contractor, manufacturer and developer usually works at the desk of his Queens Pde study, where a short story takes him about six weeks of writing and editing. But there is one he wrote in a jiffy from the comfort of his Lazy Boy leather recliner.

“I’m a veteran scuba diver and I wrote this story called The Swimmer in this chair in one day and did not change a word. It was inspired by the movie The Swimmer and a short story by Ernest Hemingway called The Big Two-Hearted River. It’s a disguise story,” he says.

Turning in the Wind is Doughty’s fourth book. His move into writing began in the

In 1977, Doughty self-published The Holyoke Years, a biography of Keith Holyoke that sold 5,000 copies. “I cringe a bit at my first novel

End of the Circle, but I still like my second one, Stone Octopus, which is about a young New Zealand man tracking down his Spanish father, a bit like Ulysses in reverse,” he says.

As the Rugby World Cup rolls on in the background, Doughty is busy with his next book. “It’s about a Welsh guy coming to New Zealand to play rugby and he isn’t very welcome,” he says.

The TGS Lions perform in the sunshine Leaving the gusty winds and sudden rainfall behind, 14 elite cricketers left the wild Auckland weather to tour Queensland and enjoy the warm weather of Australia. The boys were away for a total of 10 days, including four games against Queensland high schools.

The first game of the 10-day tour was against St Joseph’s (Terrace) in Brisbane. TGS batted first and made 267 runs within the first 50 overs; Mitchell Bremner made 64 runs and Sam Hinds 61. Two Terrace players made centuries.

However, the boys managed to bowl them out for 252 in the last over with Steven Newey picking up 4 wickets off 21 runs and also with Connor Bessell’s 4 wickets for 44 runs.

The next game was in Nambour against Sunshine Coast Grammar, who scored 153. This was chased down inside 32 overs with the loss of three wickets. Mitchell Bremner made a su-

perb 89 runs with 5 sixes.

On the sixth day the team had a Twenty20 match against the Sunshine Scorchers in Caloundra. TGS made 144 and managed to bowl out Sunshine Scorchers for just over 80 in the 20th over. Great fielding and bowling was in play to restrict the Scorchers from winning.

The last game of the tour was against Matthew Flinders Anglican College in Buderim. After a slight rain delay, the boys managed to knock over Matthew Flinders for 212. Matt Strain showed off his bowling skills by taking 5 wickets for 25 runs. A rough start to the innings for TGS but the middle order were able to handle the pressure giving the boys an edge, to get over the line. Jack Breen made a handy 43 and Jono Kemp just under 40, to put the boys in a good position for Jasper Edgar and Steven Newey to finish the job in the 49th over.

“What a performance from the boys last night, I would pay good money to watch a game like that again,” Head Coach Pat Cole said.

Between long intensive days of cricket in the sun, the boys hit the beaches of Caloundra, scoring a few waves, having adventures at Dreamworld and going go-karting, as methods of relaxation.

The boys overall did superbly, beating every opponent. “The boys have played some very impressive cricket, and to win four from four in Queensland is one hell of an achievement,” says manager Callum Wardell. Although having to return to the usual Auckland weather, they returned with sun-baked skin and new experience for the upcoming cricket season. As Jack Breen said, “It was a great experience for all as we improved our abilities overall.”

Volleyballers reach new heights While most TGS students were relaxing, studying or sleeping during the holidays, six year 11 boys represented North Harbour in their chosen sport, and Brett O’Neil represented the North Island.

Jac roberts played in the North Harbour A team in the Interprovincial championships in Tauranga, while Alex roberts, Keenan Hodge, Liam Donnelly and Will Watson played in the B team, and Tom Smeed in the C team. These boys, who have played volleyball since year 9, had a very successful tournament, with the Harbour A team coming second, B

team third and C team seventh.

Brett O’Neil spent his ‘holidays’ in Melbourne playing in the under 17 North Island team, competing in the Australian Junior State Champs.

The team, coached by TGS coach, Tristan Hegglun, placed fourth in the Challenger series. Over the summer, Brett plans to qualify for, and compete in, some stages of the National Beach Tour.

Not only have the boys reached new

levels for school volleyball, by representing North Harbour, Alex roberts, Jac roberts, Keenan Hodge and Tom Smeed have also been selected to represent New Zealand in the under 17 Beach Volleyball team. They will play in Vanuatu, in midDecember.

A trip of a lifetime Twenty-five students embarked on a Classical Studies trip to Greece, Italy and Turkey. On the 27th of September, the students and three teachers – Mr Whiting, Mr Boardman, and Ms Kelly – set off to Europe for 10 intense days. The group travelled to dozens of archaeological sites from the ancient world and learnt more than enough to help them when it comes to external examination time.

The trip began in rome with a jampacked, almost surreal first day of walking around admiring all the sites out in the open. We saw Trajan’s Column, The Circus Maximus, The Trevi Fountain and many more. For some, that won’t mean anything at all, but for us it was the sites we had spent all year studying and talking about seeing, and finally we were here.

We visited the Vatican City and the famous Sistine Chapel, which were both crazy – to actually be there seeing the artefacts we had talked about for so long.

From rome we continued on to Naples, stopping to visit the museum, and from there to Pompeii. Pompeii was by far one of the most interesting places. Seeing the bodies frozen in stone, and all the ruins that somehow remained standing, was

breathtaking.

In Greece, we saw the Acropolis, the Oracle of Delphi and Olympia, all of which were incredible. One very long bus ride later, Greece had become Turkey, and we were facing the last few stops. In Turkey the group was lucky enough to go to Gallipoli – this being the 100th anniversary made it additionally special.

Those are only a few highlights of an intense and memorable trip. The international trips TGS takes are always of high intensity, and enjoyed immensely by students.

As a member of the trip, I have gained a wider understanding of the subject I am studying than I ever would have sitting in

a classroom. I experienced the roman life I will be writing about in my essay, to some degree anyway, and the sculptures will certainly be easier to describe now that I have actually seen them.

Red and her famous green car

A slice of local history… Red Lunday de Waal pictured with a painting that captures her Citroën 2CV along with Dan Dufty’s Clydesdale horses A green Citroën that has been immortalised in paintings of Devonport and become something of a local fixture is still going strong after almost two decades.

Hauraki Corner resident and former French teacher Red Lunday de Waal says her 2CV is still better than any electric car on the market, even 25 years after the car went out of production.

Lunday de Waal bought the 1987 English Bamboo model in 1997.

“I love its simplicity. It has a low impact on the environment, is not silent and doesn’t go fast. I looked at an electric car recently, but found it still isn’t any better than my brightgreen 2CV,” she says.

A full tank of petrol is $40. “And it’s easy to maintain. I have had two new roofs, which I

bought in Europe and put on myself,” she says.

Lunday de Waal says she doesn’t treat her 2CV like a precious classic car. “It’s my everyday car and goes wherever I go. When the children were younger, we would bring the car camping to Tawharanui, take out the back seat out and use it as a sofa there. It has moved house with me many times. I have transported pot plants and had stepladders sticking out of it.

The paddle board will be in it soon,” she says.

The bright, strange-sounding vehicle has become associated with her. “I am in Devonport most mornings walking up Mt Vic or North Head. People always tell me they saw me, but they actually mean they saw my car.

It lives here. People call me if I left the lights on too, she says.

“The late Brian Jackson owned the original,” says Lunday de Waal, who had brought her copy along to the interview.

Lunday de Waal likes to get together with other 2CV drivers from time to time.

“In Devonport, Geoff and Christine Tyler own one and there is another green one like mine out west. We call them les jumeaux, the twins. And I have gone on rallies where you meet up with other 2CV enthusiasts.

“We have gone to Waiheke once and last year we toured all the volcanoes in Auckland,” she says.

Despite having only a 29-horsepower engine, it goes anywhere, she says.

Lawnmower stolen from community garden Heartless thieves have stolen the donated lawnmower from a Devonport community garden.

A volunteer noticed the lawnmower had gone missing from Ngataringa Organic Garden on October 8.

Chas Burgess, the garden’s chairman, says it had been kept in an old unlocked container.

“Because we always lock the gate to the garden, we didn’t lock the container. What is is in here? An old mower, some potting mix, hoses and a bale of hay! You wouldn’t expect people to steal it,” he says.

However, thieves broke into the garden through council’s green barn next door. “There is an ordinary door on the side and this has now been secured. Apart from the forced open door and the missing mower, there are no other signs of anything else taken,” Burgess says.

The lawnmower had arrived as discreetly as it went. “Someone gifted it to us a while ago. They just left it outside the gate. People often leave us things they think we might like, like pots and compost,” he says.

This was the third theft at the garden this year. “In April our cash box was taken. More recently, the honesty box outside was ripped off, and now this. None of them are major but they create a slightly negative feeling,” says Burgess.

The mower theft was reported to police, but Burgess doesn’t expect to see it again.

“We have another old one that is a bit hit and miss. For now, it will have to do for our front lawn and the other bits that need mowing,” he says.

TGS athletes continue successful year Devonport triathlete Katherine Badham continues to go from strength to strength, winning silver at Adelaide’s 2015 ITU Duathlon World Championship in the Junior Women division.

Badham was also named Takapuna Grammar School (TGS) Sportswoman of the Year and is a finalist for the ASB College Sports Young Sportsperson of the Year Awards, to be held on November 28.

Four other TGS athletes are also finalists: Cyclists Oscar Elworthy and Harry Waine, golfer Bridget Connolly and orienteering athlete Max Griffith.

TGS Surf Lifesaver Hannah William has also just been named runner-up in the AMP Scholarship People’s Choice Awards.
