Football club members reject merger

Devonport’s historic football club, North Shore United, has voted against amalgamating with Forrest Hill Milford.

Voting took place at special general meetings held at both clubrooms on 6 August, with Forrest Hill Milford members 110-16 in favour and North Shore 106-30 against.

North Shore’s chairman, Steve Browning, is disappointed by the result.

“I didn’t ever underestimate the history of North Shore United or the value senior members place on it. I am not surprised, just disappointed.”

North Shore dates back to 1887, while Forrest Hill Milford was formed in 1975.

North Shore is struggling financially and operationally, Browning says.

Under the merger, the managers’ roles would have been combined and there could have been four senior coaches across the club. A more robust girls’ section was another aspiration.

“We will box on, but across Auckland these

amalgamations are happening.”

The mergers can help community clubs remain sustainable in changing times.

“People say they will volunteer, but the reality is different,” Browning says.

On the playing side, the club is in great shape, with success in the northern premier competition, a very good coach and an excellent director of football, he says.

Browning is hopeful the vote will reinvigorate the club and spur members to get more actively involved.

The other vital component to the club’s continued success is the development of Allen Hill Stadium, with the club still waiting on a date for a resource consent hearing.

Forrest Hill Milford commercial manager Andrew Diver says the result is disappointing.

“Both boards believed strongly this was the best option to secure the future and improve what we offer to our members.”

Diver believes the newer club has generally younger members who are open to change, while the Devonport club may have older members with more entrenched views and a desire to protect the club’s historic legacy.

Forrest Hill members have given the board a mandate to amalgamate with another club, so the board will now consider that, Diver says.

A lot has changed since 1975, and members now are less able to help as volunteers and more willing to pay for professional management, he says.

Auckland Council has clear policies that BID money cannot be used to endorse candidates or political parties, its Manager CCOs and External Partnerships Alastair Cameron said.

“The Devonport BID (Business Improvement District) is managed by the Devonport Business Association. While the BID is funded by Auckland Council, the management of this programme is the responsibility of the Business Association.

“There are clear guidelines in the council’s BID Policy which state that BID programme resources cannot in any circumstances be used to endorse or support a particular candidate or political party.”

Council will be “reminding the Business Association of this policy and asking them to investigate how the newsletter came to be used in this manner.

“We will wait to hear back from the Business Association before confirming whether any further action needs to be taken or not,” Cameron said.

Attempts to contact Van Tonder for comment before the Flagstaff went to press were unsucessful.

Loss of father makes Nathaniel a natural Big Buddy Losing his dad when aged 14 has inspired Nathaniel Milnes to be a role model for boys without a father figure in their lives.

For the last two years, Milnes (23) has been working with Big Buddy, an organisation that matches male volunteers with boys under 14, to act as mentors and as someone for the boys to trust and rely on.

“The reason I got into it is because I know exactly what it’s like to not have a dad. My Dad would skate with us and coach us in football,” says Milnes.

“I want to be able to give that to a boy who has missed out on those things for a big period of his life.”

Milnes and his buddy Gabe (10) catch up for a few hours every weekend.

In summer they go to the beach, play basketball or go skateboarding, and in winter they enjoy going over to the city.

“A lot of the Big Buddies are older, but I think it’s good that I am young. It means I am more relatable. I teach Gabe a lot of things and he teaches me a lot too, which I think is the great thing about it. We both get something out of it,” says Milnes.

Gabe lives locally with his mum and grandmother, which is why Milnes says it is important that he learns to have respect for women.

Milnes lost a close friend to suicide, which

has influenced a very important lesson he is hoping to teach Gabe.

“Gabe has some confidence issues,” he says. “In New Zealand there is this bravado with males where they don’t talk about their feelings. I want him to know that it’s okay to speak up. You’ve got to be comfortable with who you are.”

Milnes grew up in, and still lives in Devonport, where he works part-time at the Community House as a school holiday programme leader.

He completed a Bachelor of Education and is doing postgraduate study in child psychotherapy.

“I just want to give back to kids who have missed out. With psychotherapy, I would specifically like to focus on adolescent boys who have gone through a tragedy,” says Milnes.

Until he finishes his studies, he will continue working at the community house, relief-teaching at local schools and spending time with Gabe.

“I really enjoy Big Buddy because it allows me to be a big kid – doing the same things that I did growing up in Devonport.

With Gabe, I have definitely made a friend forever.”

DoC hopes to have Wakakura track open by October The Department of Conservation (DOC) is upgrading the Wakakura Track from Lake Rd to Wesley St and hopes to have it open by the end of September.

The 857-metre long track is on a marginal strip on the shoreline of Ngataringa Bay. It runs past Mary Barrett Glade, known as Polly’s Park, and a site where Ryman Healthcare are building a retirement village.

Ryman Health are paying for the track upgrade, DoC Acting Auckland Mainland Operations Manager Kat Lane said.

The upgrade includes a new board walk over an area where a slip closed the track, boxed steps on steeper sections of track and a new culvert over a drain.

The track will have an all-weather walking surface and geotextile matting will be laid on

The Reserve Bank surprises the markets

Well the RBNZ certainly surprised the markets with their 50 basis points (bp) cut to the Official Cash Rate (OCR), which is now just 1%. It seems they are having to keep pace with other central banks, which are all cutting rates as things are a bit slow, but also to keep their currencies low to help exports – a race to the bottom!

It’s odd that the US has been so slow to cut its rates and this is why their yield curve has inverted and raised concerns of a looming recession.

The trouble with such low rates is that half the population are savers and their return, and hence spending, is reduced; while the other half are borrowers and are often unable to spend a lot more, so not as stimulatory as expected maybe!

In any event NZ banks have cut floating rates by 40-50bp and fixed rates but 10-15bp. Those with out of the money fixed rates can get us to check to see it it is worth breaking and refixing at the lower rate.

Currently this is unlikely as wholesale rates have fallen by more than retail lending rates so the break cost is often higher than the lower rate benefit - is worth checking though!

The track is currently closed, to protect the public, because it’s next to a construction site where a large crane is being used.

DOC and Ryman Healthcare are looking to develop a safety plan for the track, Lane said.

Poet left struggling due to guide-dog shortage Devonport poet Michele Leggott is among many blind people who have been left struggling without a guide dog due to a national shortage.

The professor of English and former poet laureate has been forced to rely on friends and family to guide her, while she learns how to use a white cane, a process she has found lonely and “awful”.

Leggott first went on the waiting list for a guide dog in September 2017, when a vet said her dog Olive had health issues and would have to retire early.

Last December, the Blind Foundation directed Leggott to stop using Olive as a guide-dog, for safety reasons.

Leggott has been told she is unlikely to get another dog before next year.

She knows of another Devonport woman who has been waiting a year for a dog and believes there are more than 50 others on the Blind Foundation’s waiting list.

The Blind Foundation is not short of funds and needs to put more resources into recruiting trainers, breeding dogs and even getting dogs and trainers from overseas, if needed, Leggott says.

“How come, if you are an organisation that’s supposed to deliver guide dogs, you can’t do it within a certain time?”

a shortage of trainers and a review of the training programme.

The foundation now has four trainers, which Haecker says is well resourced. It recruits internationally, but that can be a lengthy process, The number of dogs delivered to vision-impaired people in the past year to 18 months has not been as high as usual, as the foundation has been making changes to its breeding programme and training methods following an external review, Haecker says.

Leggott did receive a new dog last December, but it had to be withdrawn as it wouldn’t wear a harness.

After that she had a three-month wait for training in using a cane.

Leggott has been grateful to locals who have warned her about bumping into lampposts, as she learns to navigate the streets without a guide dog.

Leggott wrote to the foundation in May, saying she had serious concerns about the guide-dog programme.

The foundation is the sole provider in New Zealand. Leggott says getting a dog in the US would be a swift process. She believes the foundation should recruit many more trainers.

The Blind Foundation had income of almost $44 million in the year ending June 2018, of which 76 per cent came from donations, and expenses of $36.5 million. The

The Flagstaff Notes of wharf-jumping at Stanley Bay over the years by authorities concerned about the safety and ferry movements. A compromise seemed to have been reached a couple of years ago, with jumpers directed to jump at a different spot to the ferries.

Without telling councillors Richard Hill and Chris Darby, or local board members, AT seems have jumped the gun again. Darby has vowed to sort it out by summer (and late last week some of the signs were removed. But what a waste of time that could be avoided by AT being a little bit more communicative.

August 23, 2019 I’m just back from a brief visit to Singapore visiting friends. Whatever you think of the politics of living under a non-democratic regime, it was pure bliss moving around a city with a full-functioning public transport system. The highlights: regular air-conditioned trains and buses going to all different parts of the city, quickly and cheaply. I travelled multiple times over four days and on one prepaid card spent around $25.

The roads are less congested than Auckland’s.

Car use is expensive – registration costs more than $40,000 and new cars have to be scrapped after 10 years; insurance is exorbitant; petrol through the roof; off-street parking non-existent; and garaging difficult to find.

Aucklanders wedded to their cars for years won’t drop their gas-guzzling ways unless progressive change happens quickly – big-ticket public transport options, like rail to the Shore, the airport, and beyond.

The City Rail Link needs to be but a drop in the big-budget bucket. Alas, while Singapore can make large infrastructure commitments over decades, New Zealand is hamstrung by the three-year electoral cycle and the relentless quest by politicians to stay in power rather than focusing on more long-term commitments.

Maybe I spoke too soon about the interest in local-body politics waning: 18 candidates have put nominations forward for six positions available on the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board. Conicidentally this is the same number who sought election in 2016. In the council race, five candidates are seeking election for two spots, compared to 12 last time around.

Heritage tiles being removed in bus shelter repair

A heritage bus shelter in Narrow Neck will be repaired at a cost of up to $27,000, but will lose its terracotta-tile roof.

The shelter, on Vauxhall Rd near Fort Cautley, has been braced and closed, as the weight of the tiles threatens the safety of the entire wooden structure, according to Auckland Transport (AT).

Extensive rot and other weather damage to the bottom of the Vauxhall Road shelter means the entire skin has to be replaced, AT media manager Mark Hannan says. The shelter will be rebuilt using comparable materials. The concrete tile roof will be replaced with metal tiles in order to look similar but will be lighter.

“The weight of the concrete tile roof is putting a high amount of pressure on the framing below,” Hannan says.

The estimated cost is $23,000 to $27,000.

Devonport Heritage says it has advocated for the shelters to be regarded as heritage street

items, as part of the ‘special character’ area, designated in the Unitary Plan.

“AT now knows they have to be renovated, and not demolished and replaced with new ones,” group spokesperson Margot McRae says.

The group alerted the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board to the damaged shelter.

Auckland Council says its heritage team has been working closely with AT to develop guidelines around maintenance and repair work to the shelters to ensure their heritage values are retained. Most of the heritage shelters in Devonport and Takapuna are believed to date from the 1930s. The bus company provided a contribution towards their construction and upkeep.

Shore lost to Melville 2-1 away and is now joint leader of the competition with Western Springs on points, but ahead on goal difference.

Scepticism over re-tenanting council building The Devonport Information Centre has seen plummeting visitor numbers since it moved out of the 3 Victoria Rd council building, but any prospect of moving back is being met with scepticism.

The heritage building has been empty since the visitor centre was obliged to move out, because the council’s development arm, Panuku, took it over, raised the rent and wanted to shift earthquake liability to the tenant.

Now Panuku is planning to put out a call

for expressions of interest (EOI) in renting the building for a year, while it works with the council and local board on a long-term plan for the site, according to a memo from portfolio manager Ian Wheeler.

However, the information centre’s Lynn Dawson, suspects the move is a stalling tactic, gaining Panuku kudos ahead of the local-body elections, with no actual date for the EOI process.

“How long will it take? The next cruise ship season starts in September.”

The volunteers would return to the building in a flash, but if they don’t get a chance to move in this time, many are likely to walk away, Dawson says While the information centre had more than 21,000 visitors in the year before it was forced

to vacate 3 Victoria Rd, this has roughly halved since it moved to the nearby Arcade.

In order for the centre to move back, the Devonport Business Association would need to sign the lease. Business Improvement District manager Toni van Tonder says that won’t happen, as the volunteer board cannot take on the earthquake liability.

In addition, the market rent is unaffordable.

“I think the chances of a community group getting in there are almost nil,” van Tonder says.

“Panuku should just open its doors and let the information centre go back and carry the [earthquake] liability as it already does. Then at least the building is being lived in. That’s the best way to look after a heritage building.”

Panuku had not responded to comments by deadline.

TGS not told of measles case Parents are being urged to check their children are vaccinated after a Takapuna Grammar School (TGS) student came down with measles. The school says it was not advised of the case.

The Auckland Regional Public Health Service says the student did not attend school while infectious and is in isolation.

There have been 450 confirmed cases of measles in Auckland this year, 20 of those on the North Shore.

Poynter said, “Our advice to parents is that they should check their children have had at least one measles mumps rubella (MMR) vaccine, get them vaccinated if not, and please keep children at home if they are unwell.”

TGS principal Mary Nixon says information about preparedness was sent to schools in May. “The school has not been notified by the Auckland Regional Public Health Service of any confirmed cases of measles at Takapuna Grammar School,” she says.

Gull station is something we don’t need I arrived in Devonport in 1930. Since then I have seen a lot of businesses come and go.

But the latest hopeful to arrive to set up something we don't need is the planned Gull service station in Cheltenham.

Cheltenham is like the rest of Devonport.

You would say it is a bit of a laid-back area.

We have a shopping area that services all our needs. We don't need Gull or their money to tell us what to do.

A service station would only serve a small area. BP is building a new station at Hauraki Corner. This will have the best of

So I suggest to Gull to sell your area for housing and you could make more money.

The biggest loss to the area will be Tainui Motors. Vic and his staff over the years have helped a lot of people without any disruption to anyone, and we don't realise what a loss he will be.

Other businesses in the area hope it will bring more customers; but owing to the shortage of nearby parking, I can't see this happening to any extent.

I was reading about the council building in Victoria Road being empty for 396 days (Flagstaff, 9 August).

Our former library building in Howick has been empty for nine years. Beat that!

There was nothing wrong with it originally but the council has stopped its maintenance and the roof is now leaking. What a mess.

By the way, the council/Panuku response is that they are looking at different options for its use.

Questions for local-body election candidates Praise council for one gas station more – I agree with the editor. We used to have five.

Council has achieved four more things in 30 years: sealed Devonport’s sewers that leaked like the council ratepayers’ bank accounts; closed the old filthy dump, only after adding millions of tons more at speed; closed the road to Mount Vic except to the selected few; and fixed the Stanley Bay seawall for double retail.

So we ask council election candidates the real questions: Do you agree with secret closed council meetings resolving public matters? Who allowed a coastal-land single-house zone to be changed to a grotesque commercial high-

rise in a so-called heritage zone? Are these independent commissioners on these matters truly objective decision-makers? How did council give away our marina for $3.7 million. Who said Auckland Council could give a $40 million site away for $3 million (the city’s old council building)? How come Auckland Transport is so useless regarding Lake Rd? Why can’t we have a three-lane scheme like Panmure and Whangaparaoa, except with better design, pedestrian subways and roundabouts and no right turns elsewhere? Where is the street-cleaning crew in the village? Who has set up and driven the pending ghetto-high-density housing in Bayswater areas (coming fast

with no proper infrastructure in place)? Why doesn’t council force stormwater retention for domestic water use?

OMG is all we can say to past council performance.

And you Devonport blokes are apparently useless at breeding our future generations (Flagstaff, 9 August). You are apparently static like our population. The only growth in Devoport is in car numbers and clowns.

Don’t vote for dictators and clowns or people who manipulate the figures to suit.

Heritage advocates hypocritical over plaques

I read with interest the article (Flagstaff, 26 July) about them not knowing and understanding which heritage rules apply for putting up plaques in Devonport. They then have the gall to complain about red tape.

in Devonport do the right thing – we get the right advice and the right consents. We do things legally!

These heritage luminaries do not even know the rules, let alone why they apply; yet they say they say they represent Devonport and its heritage. Surely a basic understanding of the planning framework would be a requirement to represent the Devonport community?

The plaques already up are gaudy and ugly with cheap frames, attached poorly and are detrimental-looking to the buildings they are on. Certainly, the Devonport community was not consulted on them (and I query why this hasn’t occurred. Another example is the tacky white crosses at Mt Victoria cemetery).

Surely, if the new plaques need consent, then the ones already up have been put up illegally? I bet the heritage luminaries will not be raising this issue with council and admitting their mistake. Their whole stance around the plaques is just hypocritical.

Check it out: Rocker hits the right note in return to TGS As teenagers at Takapuna Grammar School, The Checks shot to success in the rock world. Now, drummer and vocalist Jacob Moore is back at the school as a teacher, helping another generation experience the power of music. He talks to Helen Vause.

Song is in the air at Takapuna Grammar School, and rehearsals are buzzing with excitement and expectation.

The school’s top young choristers are working up for the Big Sing Finale in Dunedin Town Hall later this month, when they’ll be facing stiff competition from the best secondary-school choirs in the country.

It’s the third year in a row Takapuna Grammar School (TGS) choirs have made it into the finale, but it’s the first time two of the school choirs have been selected at once: Leonessa, a 37-strong all-girls choir, and TGS Chorale, a mixed choir with 38 members.

Guiding them is singing teacher/conductor Jacob Moore, who wears a mile-wide smile.

He’s proud of ‘his’ singers and how they’re stepping up to the challenge ahead.

Just three weeks out from the Big Sing, Moore is excited to report that Sol3 Mio tenor Amitai Pati is coming to coach at the next rehearsal, and that renowned mezzo soprano Catrin Johnsson has also coached the two choirs. It’s a reflection of the commitment to high standards in the school’s choral endeavours.

For “Mister Moore” as the kids know him, it’s his first year in teaching. And being at the school brings back happy memories of taking his place on stage at the same event in 2004 as a teenager in a TGS choir.

At 32, Moore is one of the younger members of staff, and he’s delighted his first teaching job has brought him back into the music department at his old school.

With the same long locks, he probably doesn’t look much changed to the longe-serving staff who remember him.

And although the teenage Moore may have done well in the school choir, he’s best remembered for cavorting on the school stage, entertaining students and staff, and belting out rock with a bunch of his mates in a band that was fast rising to fame.

A rewarding change... Jacob Moore left the rock rollercoaster to follow a different career path in music Sven Pettersen, Callum Martin and Karel Chabera – were The Checks. Moore was on drums, and backing vocals, while still a senior TGS chorister.

The band formed when the boys were barely 15 years old. It launched into frenetic success off the back of Smokefree Rockquest.

The Checks pulled in teen fans with their high energy, blues-driven sound. They finished school in 2005, and the gigs rolled in. The music industry and the media loved them and in no time they’d caught the eye of

music producers in the UK. By 2006, they were signed up and off to London.

They recorded the first of three albums, Hunting Whales, then took off on road tours across Europe.

Still under 19, they did 170 shows in a year.

It was all pretty head-spinning stuff, with lots of fast learning, recalls Moore.

Travelling with The Checks on that stage of the journey was Jacob’s musician dad, Philip Moore.

ment to the music and to certain standards.

It’s all about the music, and I’m working these choirs to get the best out of them. It’s feeling pretty rewarding for all of us right now,” he grins.

In addition to the two top choirs, for which sought-after places are auditioned, Moore is also pleased with his work with his unaudi-

tioned choir for boys. He’s grown the ranks of that choir, pulling in the more diffident performers when he gets the chance.

“I’m starting to get a few more of the boys into this choir. They think it’s not their thing, and then they see some of the sports jocks are in and their perceptions about chorale singing and being part of this change.

“They experience the power of music and the social and developmental benefits being part of the choirs can bring,” says Moore, who enjoys watching the confidence of his singers grow.

“Somehow they all seem so much more capable than I remember being at their age.”

It’s a busy, full life and a long way from where he was a decade ago, but Moore says there has been great value to him professionally in being both the rockster and the choirboy.

Chamber Choir. But he’s also making his own music of a very different style, currently recording an album of original material.

“I do find working in choral music far more rewarding. But you can’t beat the bright lights and the buzz of it all in the rock world. That’s why rock music was invented.

Many people still find it hard to get their head around the concept of me being into both forms of music.”

“My band friends see me as the choir guy and chorale people see me as ‘that rock guy’.”

Moore has exciting plans for the choirs, but first the focus is on coaching them to a fantastic performance at The Big Sing.

Getting 70-odd excited teens to Dunedin, and getting the best from them amid all the hype would be a handful for most teachers, but apparently not for Moore.

“I won’t be chasing them around the city. I need my sleep to perform well too,” he deadpans, with just a hint of a grin at memories of being a teen on the road.

home, where they continued as The Checks until they split in 2012. It had been a wild ride.

But Moore wasn’t done with the rock-band life. When the chance came, he was back off to London at three days’ notice and to another group – Splashh. There was lots of touring but off stage there were plenty of tough times too, says Moore, remembering the grim reality of couch-surfing between gigs in some very squalid digs in London.

“There were some amazing times, but at times we were pretty down too. It was very hard going,” he recalls.

Eventually that journey fizzled and Moore came home, feeling he was lacking direction, and got a job in a burger bar.

He decided that in order to keep up with his vision of himself as a musician, he’d best go down the road of music education.

“Studying had to be the next thing for me, and the way to opening up a pathway into conducting and musicology.”

So the bright lights, big stages and large crowds were left behind along with the rollercoaster of the rock-star life, for the time being at least.

Moore went off to do a music degree and teacher training, before returning to live in Devonport and to take up his very first teaching job.

Heading into the music department this year, he was delighted to be back at his old school and with the opportunity he saw before him.

He feels he has been part of breathing new life and more energy into the school’s well-established choral scene.

“It’s been fantastic to have the chance to build up on the foundation of Jane Horder [former music teacher] at the school and to be part of moving things forward. The kids are working hard and our choirs are well placed to reach high standards. We have a lot more resources here than many other schools have – and of course we have less than some of the other schools, but the choirs here are in a good position.”

He’s happy to say he is keeping the music challenging for his singers.

Work to replace elegantly aged kerbs in Oxford Tce with new concrete has raised hackles in Cheltenham. Residents contacted the Flagstaff concerned over the loss of “bluestone” kerbs on the street. However, Auckland Transport (AT) says the kerbs were aged concrete, not bluestone.

“There were a few metres of bluestone channels and, where the stones were missing, we replaced that with concrete. There are still short sections of bluestone channels left,” AT media manager Mark Hannan said.

Set in the 1980s era of big hair and even bigger shoulder pads, the play is about six women who meet regularly in a beauty parlour in Louisiana.

These Southern belles are flowery on the outside, but tough as steel inside.

Through four scenes spanning three years, the hairdressers and their customers engage in small-town gossip, yet a deep strength and a purposefulness emerge when tragedy touches their lives.

Devonport actresses Liz Cannon and Grace Chisholm play hairdresser-beauticians Truvy and Annelle.

Cannon, who works for the Devonport Flagstaff, has previously performed in Company Theatre’s Calendar Girls and One Man Two Guvnors, and Chisholm was in Popcorn last year.

Takarunga/Mt Victoria walkway to close for upgrade An eight-week upgrade to Takarunga/ Mt Victoria’s western walking track, which includes new steps, is set to begin in early September.

The Tupuna Maunga Authority says the improvements will “protect remnant features of the former Maori pa and improve the experience for visitors”.

The track on both the western and northern slopes of the mountain will be closed from Tuesday 3 September for the duration of the upgrade.

“Unlike other parts of the maunga, which have been extensively modified in European times, this track winds over a relatively untouched terraced area with significant archaeological features. However, the current track surface is prone to erosion and is putting thaw features at risk,” says Nick Turoa, Tupuna Maunga Authority Operations Manager.

The track will be laid with a new compacted aggregate surface, which the Maunga Authority says will minimise erosion and future disturbance of archaeological material and protect the natural form and shape of the maunga.

It will also create a more even walking

ThE NAVy COmmuNiTy NEwSLETTER New Centre supports getting fit faster A focus on health and fitness is a priority for our sailors and a new Fleet Integrated Health and Wellness Centre/Te Whare Tipu Oranga, at Devonport Naval Base, supports that goal.

The new centre was backed by the teams from Defence Health and the Defence Health Centre at the Base, and was funded and supported by Base Commander Ange Holland.

“We are supporting our sailors to get back to work and to full fitness faster,” says CDR Holland. “The Health and Wellness Centre adds to facilities already available to our sailors on Base including the Fleet Gym, Fleet pool and the Health centre.”

Integrated health support services for personnel will be delivered at the centre.

These services include physiotherapy, physical training for injury rehabilitation and fitness plus dietician advice and support for weight management.

The centre was opened in July and will support the new ‘Fit for Life’ campaign put together by Defence Regional Health Manager Tina Vahry-Holman with Fleet Warrant Officer and Physical Training Instructor (WOPTI) Mike Kennedy. This programme focuses on personnel who are unfit or are having difficulty managing their weight.

“The new centre is about helping our personnel to achieve their fitness goals and get back to work – we want to get them there quicker and more effectively,” says WOPTI Mike Kennedy. “We wanted to bring everything together in one place to support rehabilitation programmes and the ‘Fit for Life’ programme, to create a holistic approach to health.”

One of the first regular users of the new centre is Fleet Chief of Staff, Commander Martin Doolan, who is recuperating from knee replacement surgery.

His usual fitness regime during the week starts with a daily 6am session at the Philomel Gym, a lunchtime one kilometre swim in the Fleet pool three to four times each week and a session on the bike when he gets home.

“The hardest part about daily physical training is getting your kit on. Once you have your kit on you have made the mental decision that you are going to make a start on it,” he says. “It’s a long road coming back from a total knee replacement, and I’m also at the new centre two to three times each week working with the physical training instructor there.”

The Fleet Exercise Rehab Instructor based at the centre, LPTI Tane Kissick Ponga,

drafted a programme of specific exercises for CDR Doolan.

“For the last few weeks since the centre has been running, I’ve felt an enormous benefit from it,” he says.

Police call for closer neighbour connections New Devonport Community Constable Glenda Peri says that residents should introduce a ‘Connect Four’ rule, following the death of a local elderly man going unnoticed for days.

“Get to know your neighbours on either side, in front and behind. That’s the Connect Four rule,” says Peri.

It wasn’t until the family of the deceased was unable to contact him that the police were called.

Constable Peri had to smash the window, at the man’s Kerr St residence, to gain entry and discovered that he was deceased.

“You can give your neighbour a spare key, and if you don’t see them, call the police and give them the key so they can check everything’s okay.”

The man’s neighbour Lynn Dawson says that he was extremely isolated and suggests that is the reason none of the neighbours were concerned for his well-being.

“I hadn’t seen him in a few days, and when I came home on Sunday there were police everywhere,” says Dawson.

“My neighbour knows that if my blind isn’t up by midday, they need to come and sort me out. A lot of elderly people can be quite isolated. You don’t have to be in each others’ face, you just have to know that they’re okay each day.”

No-swimming signs remain at Stanley Bay wharf ahead of summer No-swimming signs have been removed from the old wooden wharf at Stanley Bay, but will remain on its gangway.

Auckland Transport’s placement of no-swimming/fishing/diving notices on the gangway and ferry pontoon recently annoyed has Auckland Councillor Chris Darby and the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board, who were not told about the signs in advance.

Darby vowed to get the matter sorted for locals. For decades, Stanley Bay wharf has been a popular meeting and jumping-off point for kids over summer.

However, over the past couple of summers, “safety concerns have been raised around the behaviour of some swimmers at Stanley Bay,”

an Auckland Transport (AT) spokesman said.

“There have been issues around young people jumping off the gangway and the ferry pontoon as ferries have been coming and going.

The Navy has also raised safety concerns from swimmers around its vessels.

“We know that Stanley Bay is a favourite spot for swimming and fishing, but we need to manage safety when ferries and ferry passengers are coming and going,” the spokesman said.

AT is planning to assess the safety situation and then talk to the local board and ward councillors to “get some clear direction around how the wharf area can be used safely both for ferry services and recreational use,” he said.

Sustainability starts early at preschool The community is getting on board with a preschool’s environmentally friendly vision, by donating recycled play equipment, including an extremely popular boat.

The vessel, which has recently served as a pirate’s boat and a mermaid’s palace, sat outside a house near Stanley Bay’s Care-a-Lot before teacher Karyn Little asked the owner about buying it.

The man was happy to donate the boat to the preschool, which his children had attended. A call-out on social media supplied life-jackets for the young ‘seafarers’.

“When it comes to children, they want to make it happen,” Little says. “We have an amazing community who are happy for children to learn to recycle.”

Little is constantly hunting and gathering for Care-a-Lot, because staff are keen for children to learn to care for the environment.

Recently, she asked an arborist who was chopping up tree branches for offcuts, and he delivered a box of nicely sliced tree-branch discs perfect for use as building blocks.

On a trip to get a cable wheel and tyres from the Devonport Community Recycling Centre, Little met manager Jane Walters.

The recycling centre has had financial problems after a drop in council funding, and the preschool grabbed the opportunity to hire Walters as a manager perfectly suited to its sustainable vision.

Living on a peninsula makes the boundaries of our home place clear. Although it is also easy to understand that native birds fly between Rangitoto and Takarunga, that estuary health in Shoal Bay and Ngataringa Bay is interconnected with the wider Waitemata Harbour, and destructive pest plants and animals potentially spread both from and into local natural areas and gardens. Hence our participation in regional programmes such as Pest Free Auckland and North West Wildlink.

Our home is also connected across broader scales. As a result of around 80 million years of geographic isolation and comparatively stable climate, Aotearoa contributes significantly to global biodiversity. This same geological history also contributes to New Zealand’s vulnerability to ecological disruption. Historical destruction of our forests and wetlands has left remaining native ecosystems and indigenous species further vulnerable to disruption, especially

rapid climate changes due to global greenhouse gas emissions.

By continuing to plant trees in our treasured reserves, school grounds, and gardens, and helping to keep ecosystems intact through careful restoration, we are combatting a growing global climate emergency. To further help safeguard our native biodiversity and human welfare, we need to cooperate broadly to lower fossil fuel and agricultural methane emissions dramatically over the next years.

We are co-sponsoring a community screening of an exciting new documentary titled 2040. The filmmaker imagines what the world could be like for his daughter in 2040 if we were to make a full-out effort to protect our climate, indigenous ecosystems, and biodiversity. It was a hit at the recent film festival. With a G rating and a very positive spin on this complex and urgent problem, we are encouraging families to come with interested children.

About 60 people braved a wintry day to help clean up Cheltenham Beach, filling four rubbish sacks with rubbish, mainly fishing lines and beer bottles, broken and whole.

“Unfortunately, these items are particularly dangerous with children and pets cutting their feet on broken glass, and seabirds and mammals getting injured and/or entangled by fishing line” says cleanup organiser Emma Wingrove.

Many of those who turned up were from community groups, such as Rotary and Lions, but there were also families and people of all ages, including some who travelled from west and south Auckland, Wingrove says.

Wingrove established The Clean Up Crew in March 2014 when she was studying for a degree in Environmental Science and Marine Biology and has led clean-ups of at least one beach almost Bucket brigade... Roxana Munoz and Isidora Robles every month since.

Student Perspective Why study IB at TGS? As a part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, all students are encouraged to participate in a range of activities, sports and co-curriculars in order to become more wellrounded learners. This part of the Diploma is called CAS: Creativity, Activity and Service.

As a first-year IB student myself, I found the idea of completing 150 hours of cocurricular activities over the two-year course very intimidating. However, as the year has progressed, I have really enjoyed the opportunities offered by the CAS programme.

Since the middle of Term Two, I have been lucky enough to be mentoring a junior debating team. As a keen debater myself, I thought the challenge of teaching what I know to beginner debaters would be a great chance to improve my own skills. Every week, I have been meeting with my team, helping them develop the skills that I myself developed as a junior. Being a very competitive person, I knew that I would put all my effort into helping them grow into strong and confident speakers.

This activity has counted towards my service

hours to CAS, as I have given up my own time to help the team develop and grow into better debaters. A service activity in CAS can be anything that involves giving up your own time and/or resources for the betterment of others.

I have definitely noticed that this element of the IB Diploma has pushed me and my peers to really consider what we can do to help those around us, and I think that it is a great thing. We have participated in beach clean-ups, charity events and organising events within the school. Through mentoring a junior debating team, I have developed not only my own skills, but also my own character. Giving up my time to others has made me realise the importance of doing so.

I would strongly recommend the IB diploma to all students and families looking for a worldly, well-rounded and engaging qualification. With elements such as CAS, the diploma really pushes everyone to go out of their comfort zones in a strong effort to create more globally aware and considerate students.

TGS Concert Band performs at Nz Concert Band Association Festival Takapuna Grammar School’s concert band has been practising hard for the past two terms. On Sunday 4th August, we performed at the National Concert Band Association Festival, held at Diocesan School For Girls.

A wide variety of bands performed at the festival, many of them school concert bands. Workshops run by professional musicians were available at the festival, and there were also some instruments from ABI Music on show, which were quite fun to try out.

Mr Andrew Uren and Mr Robert Dil conduct the band, and we rehearse after school every Wednesday. Our programme consists of four pieces: Rampage!, Jam Ballista, Armenian Rhapsody and The Great Steamboat Race. Jam Ballista was written by a New zealand composer, Claire Scholes, who was at the festival. She told us that the piece was inspired by an episode of Wallace and Gromit, which features a contraption that launches jam. The piece also features two soloists, Francesca Parussini on the tenor saxophone, and Volkan Ozyurteri on the drums.

The Great Steamboat Race is a slightly unconventional piece that features some very cool use of percussion instruments.

Water jugs are used to create the sound of ocean waves hitting the side of a steamboat, and a large metal pipe is also hit with a hammer as a percussion instrument.

The festival was a great opportunity for us to perform together as a group and represent our school, and also to listen to some fellow bands and musicians performing their pieces. The festival ran from Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th of August, so there were a lot of bands playing. Our band received a silver award from the adjudicators. We were also very excited to play at the KBB Music Festival on 14 August.

Enviro Club raises over $200 for local charity Concerns for our environment are at an all-time high, with local school students doing their part to make a difference.

Takapuna Grammar School’s Enviro Club organised a bake sale on 27 June for environmental charity Generation zero.

Generation zero is a group of young activists from New zealand, passionate about minimising climate change and moving towards independence from fossil fuels. This movement was chosen by the members of Enviro Club, as they share the same concerns for the environment as many students at Takapuna Grammar do.

Many members of the 50+ strong group were involved in this bake sale. All baked goods were from home and brought in tupperware containers to minimise singleuse plastic. The bake sale was extremely popular and raised over $200.

There is a growing concern among students about our future as changes are occurring too slowly to prevent irreversible damage to the planet. year 13 Takapuna Grammar Student,

and passionate environmentalist, Edward White said: “I am scared of the climate crisis because it is already causing damage around the world with deadly heatwaves and hurricanes being made stronger by the sudden increase in temperature. As a student, I feel like previous generations of leaders have let us down by not taking climate change seriously and this will have devastating effects on our communities moving forward.”

Climate change is the most serious issue the world currently faces, and it will impact our local communities if action is not taken. Rising sea levels are a threat to all of our coastal areas. To put this in perspective, the houses on Cheltenham Beach are potentially at risk of being flooded and damaged if no action is taken.

The $200 raised by the Enviro Club will be put to good use by Generation zero, and will hopefully help in creating change that will guarantee our future on this planet.
