Cheeky parkers could win council blessing

“Pirate” parkers using an empty council-owned Sunnynook section as an informal park-and-ride facility may inspire an official move to formalise its ongoing use, and that of similar empty sites near the Northern Busway. The section at 145 Sunnynook Rd was left vacant when a house was removed

following the 2023 floods. Up to 18 vehicles have been seen parked on the site, on both the gravel and grass verge. Auckland Council general property manager Mace Ward said the council was aware of the informal parking arrangement. Conversations had been held among

council officials about the possibility of tidying the site and formalising parking arrangements. Discussions were still in their early stages, and dependent on funding, consents and local board views, but the concept could potentially be extended to other flood-prone To page 3
