Ram raid at Victoria Superette but owners resilient A ram raid at Victoria Superette on Sunday night caused thousands of dollars in damage but offenders left with nothing. A car smashed through the front door of the shop at around midnight. The loud bang woke Hina Lee and Jeff

Hwang, who have owned the dairy for 12 years and live on the premises. “My husband rushed out and yelled loudly,” Lee said. Two teenage offenders inside the shop, who were attempting to break into the cigarette cabinet, were spooked and ran outside to a waiting car. It is the first time the shop has been broken into during the couple’s ownership. “Devonport is a very safe and secure area,” Lee said. They reopened the superette the next day and were thankful for the letters, flowers and well wishes from locals. “People here are very good-hearted,” Lee said.

Belmont Park squash players take NZ junior titles Two Belmont Park squash players have won national junior titles. Gabe Yam beat Anthony Lepper to take the Boys Under-19 title, while Grace Spencer won the Girls Under-11 championship, beating Zoe Lepper. The matches were played at North Shore Squash Club. Belmont narrowly missed out on three titles, with Ella Lash losing the Under-15 Girls final to Sophie Hodges. It’s been a massive year for Belmont players, with Yam playing for New Zealand alongside Matthew Lucente at the world junior squash open in India. As well as being New Zealand’s top junior, in the latest squash rankings Yam is now number five on the senior list. This means he is a serious contender to represent New Zealand at senior level. Last month, a young Belmont side won the men’s New Zealand E-Grade team championships. Drones off the mountain menu

Committee will consider applications for drone use on the authority-administered cones. The drone issue was discussed recently at a TMA meeting. “Management have observed members of the public using drones at Tūpuna Maunga for either filming purposes or general recreation, such as practice flying, on a relatively frequent basis,” a report to the authority said.

“The use of drones for filming includes both commercial and private purposes. For example, members of the public may seek to film wedding ceremonies on the maunga with the use of drones or to film whānau and other gatherings. “The use of drones raises health and safety and privacy issues, and may impact the enjoyment by people of the spaces,” the report said.

TMA management said drone use on maunga contravened a number of values. “The Wairuatanga/Spiritual value recognises that the maunga are sacred places to mana whenua and inspire reverence and respect. The Mana Whai a Rēhia/Recreational value promotes recreational activities that take into account the sacredness of the maunga and, in particular, the tihi,” the report said.

DevonportProperty.nz Report â€” September 2018 Devonport house sales bucking the Auckland trend The latest statistics of property sales and prices for Auckland over recent months have continued to show that prices are flat or falling slightly. Set against this backdrop, the Devonport market of house sales shows a robust resistance to such pressure as demand for quality homes is maintained. Over the past year, the sales of houses across Devonport totalled 171, a rise of 16% with a median price of $1,750,000 in September, up very slightly on the same time last year. Compare that to the North Shore generally and you see that from a total of 2,933 house sales, volumes were down 9% and prices have eased back 3% to $1,110,000. Looking to the wider Auckland region, house sales over the past year have seen volume down 2% and prices ease 1% to a median price of $915,000. Across all property types, the most recent three months (July to September)

have seen the local Devonport market with a total of 42 sales and 54 new property listings hitting the market. This strong selection of new listings has gone some way to providing greater purchase options for eager buyers in the market. On early indications from the first weeks of October, it looks like this level of available properties for sale will rise significantly as the market gets into full gear for Spring and Summer.

UNIT SALES Whilst the majority of sales across Devonport are houses, one in five of all sales are units, townhouses and apartments. The market for units has been, as previously reported, experiencing a significant slump. There are though, early signs of a pick-up in this sector with 22 sales of units over the past 12 months, which whilst down from the peak levels of 42 sales 18 months ago, is an improvement on the bottom of the market three months ago with just 15 sales in the preceding 12 months. Young skier wins national freestyle title

The 10-year-old won the Under-12 category at the Junior Freestyle Nationals at Cardrona, taking gold in the half-pipe and slopestyle. Liam has now been selected in the New Zealand skiing development squad. The Richards family has been in New Zealand for almost four years, but Liam has been skiing since age two, first honing his skills in Switzerland, where the family returns each year. His mum Julliette said: “Liam used to follow our eldest Callum down the slopes from the age of about four – it was quite nerve-racking for a mother.”

Callum, now in Year 12 at Takapuna Grammar, is an accomplished skier himself, winning Auckland Secondary Schools and North Island freestyling titles. It was Liam’s fourth national competition. But even so it was a surprise to win the title as he still has one year left in the under-12 division and was competing against older boys. While Liam’s development-squad selection will mean more trips to the mountains, much of the training for freestyle skiing is done on trampolines and a compression airbag. By the time the freestyle moves make it to the slopes they are well practised, which cuts down on injuries, Juliette says.

Interest Rate Outlook We are seeing a rather strange dynamic in interest rates lately, with US rates on the rise and NZ rates steady to actually falling a few points in the one-and two-year fixed mortgage rates. Generally, when US rates rise we tend to follow, particularly at the longer-term rates as they tend to benchmark against the US 10-year bond rate, which is now up at 3.25%. The Reserve Bank expects the Official Cash Rate (OCR) to remain at 1.75% in NZ for the next year or so, and it could in fact go up or down depending on economic conditions. This will keep our short-term mortgage rates at these historic low levels in the low 4%’s for a while yet. At some stage though, if US rates continue to rise, it is likely most other countries will follow as capital flows tend to follow higher yields. The Flagstaff Notes By Rob Drent

I’m disappointed at the choice of name for Ryman Healthcare’s retirement village. Ryman has plumped for William Sanders – New Zealand’s most decorated naval hero. Sanders won a Victoria Cross in 1917, in the First World War. But while Ryman has played up the local connection of his Navy service, Sanders’ relationship to Devonport appears to have been scant. According to the Encyclopedia of New Zealand (1966 edition), it appears he grew up in Auckland city and Takapuna. From the age of 15, he went to sea, working on coastal ships around New Zealand. He was called up to the Navy in 1915, and moved up the ranks to Lieutenant-Commander on 25 April 1917. Sanders was awarded the Victoria Cross on 30 April 1917. He was in command of HMS Prize, a three-masted topsail

schooner that engaged in combat with a U-93 German submarine. The ship was holed many times. But Sanders calmly held fire until the sub was at close range, and then opened up and the submarine was sunk. Sanders was also awarded the Distinguished Service Order for another action against a German submarine on 12 June 1917, but was lost at sea before it was gazetted. Sanders was clearly a brave man and an accomplished mariner. But my point is his actual connection to Devonport was only in passing. Ryman, being a commercial entity, could run into difficulty with historically prominent families not necessarily wanting their names attached to a retirement village. The family of yachtsman Sir Peter Blake or the Duders – who have a strong connections to the site (once Duders brickworks) – may not have wanted the village named after them. The Duder family has said they were not approached. But I wonder how far Ryman cast its net. Why not the Wayne Shelford Village, in honour of one of our greatest All Black captains, who played more than 100 games for North Shore Rugby Club and served in the Navy for many years? And given the fact the village is built on Ngati Whatua land, a Maori name may have

That Ngati Whatua owns the land may in fact have ruled out Shelford, as he is of Ngapuhi descent. For many years, the land, when occupied by Navy housing, was known as the Whakakura Block. Whakakura would have had greater local historical significance. At one stage Ryman said a naming competition would be held, but this never happened. It should have, to get the public more involved. The Glow Festival last weekend, centring on Windsor Reserve, and the After Five party in Clarence St, were once again great successes. I’ve said it before, but wouldn’t it be great if Clarence St could be closed off on a more regular basis, perhaps one Friday a month during daylight-saving hours, to become a regular attraction for tourists and locals alike? In the winter, a regular event could transfer to Devonport Wharf. After a slow winter, Devonport businesses need a good shot in the arm and it would expand on last month’s popular Park(ing) Day, when car parks were replaced with art and other installations, which claimed back the streets for public use.

Last month, several cars were broken into along Calliope Rd and Glen Rd and attempts made to start them, causing a lot of damage but not succeeding in actually driving any away, as far as we know. My Honda Accord was one of the cars, but I was away and returned on 6 October to find the ignition smashed and the back quarter glass also smashed. Police have fingerprinted the car. I am not certain exactly when the breakins happened. I just wondered if anyone may have seen anything – from Friday 21 September onwards. Robyn Dormer

Departing veteran will miss the TGS buzz After nearly four decades at Takapuna Grammar School, Robin Holding is heading to a new job. She tells Helen Vause about the wrench of leaving, changes in education and taking a firm hand in the classroom.

In her own school days, she was Robin Jenkins, and she’d arrived at Takapuna Grammar (TGS) midway through her secondary-school years because the family had moved up from Wellington for her father’s job in education. Although they settled in Northcote, her dad had his eye on TGS for his daughters and they would bus to their new school from home. “There’s no way he would have sent me to an all-girls school. He was very pro coeducation,” remembers Holding. And just like her father, Holding is passionate about education and teaching. Leaving TGS, she takes with her years of great memories of her life and times there. It’s the school she came to early in her career. Her first job out of teacher training was at Epsom Girls Grammar, but when a job came up at TGS, she went after it. “Teaching has been fantastic,” she says. It’s one of her last days in the classroom, with many goodbyes ahead and that farewell afternoon tea in the staffroom looming. “Yes, it’s going to be a big wrench. There are lots of people I will miss. I will miss the challenge of working with teens and I will miss the buzz of the school community. It’s going to be a big change, but I am ready for it.

There comes a tipping point for all of us and for me it is time for a change.” Holding had thought teaching at TGS would very likely be her last job, until a new opportunity in education – out of the classroom – came her way. She’s leaving to work for Advanced Learning Ltd, an organisation founded by Dr Ian Hunter, an educator and author, who is widely known amongst staff and students for his groundbreaking academicwriting programme, ‘Write that Essay’. Robin and her husband, Terry Holding, who himself has recently retired from teaching at TGS, were already making changes. The couple moved from their home in Vauxhall Rd to an apartment at Kensington Park in Orewa. And they’re enjoying it, says Robin, who has been commuting back to her job at TGS. “We love the lifestyle, and when we got up there we found old friends both from education and from the neighbourhood had already moved up that way before us.” Not that this busy couple has eased up much. Terry is a busy JP, and he’s often making the morning commute with Robin for business in the city. Robin and Terry met at TGS, where he was the Head of the English, when she arrived as a staff member. They married in 1986, and

October 19, 2018 later their son Tim went to the school from 2000 to 2004. Robin too was Head of English, stepping down in 2010 after nine years in the role. She had an interest in journalism and media studies and part of her legacy at the school is the Robin Holding Award for top students in media. In recent years, she’s been responsible for overseeing the students who write the stories for the regular pages the school takes in The Flagstaff. That’s been a very successful

Just busy.” venture for both the students and the school, and the local community, she says. Mentoring her group of eager newshounds also brings back memories of a stint of sports reporting Holding did years ago, phoning in her stories to newspapers from weekend sports fixtures. “I saw how the professionals changed my stories from the way I had written them and I learned a lot from that.” In her near 40 years at TGS, Holding has seen lots of changes in the school and in education. She’s seen out six principals. She saw the back of caning kids in schools when it was abolished back in 1982. She recalls the mufti years for seniors in the 80s and 90s – and the subsequent passing of that era with no regrets. She remembers very well

the coming of NCEA and the changes that brought. But bringing in NCEA didn’t stop the world turning, she says. Today, the school is a much more sophisticated environment, with far greater diversity in courses and opportunities for students. And the students are different too from the young people she remembers. “Some say that standards have fallen. But I don’t think our students are worse than earlier generations in terms of behaviour or study. We’ve got some really top kids. “I’ve seen big changes in attitudes to education among students and their parents. And that’s also part of a societal shift. As the demands of employers are changing, everyone is talking about upskilling. “Students are not just looking at where they’ll be doing their first degree; they’re also looking now at where they’ll be carrying on to do their second degree. And without a doubt, many more students these days do go on to do tertiary education. That is the expectation now. “I have never had any discipline issues and I’m known for being firm. Its often been challenging, but I don’t take any rubbish. I believe I’ve set high standards. “I have really loved teaching. It’s a great feeling when you close that classroom door and you are queen of your own domain. Yes it’s very busy, but I’ve never found it stressful. Just busy.” Outside the classroom, Holding has played a big part in the school’s rowing community. She’s been the teacher in charge of the sport over three periods of time since 1992. “They were amazing years and we have made lasting friendships with so many kids and parents through rowing. But it was also a huge demand on time and energy. In any season, I would be away from home for about 23 nights at rowing camps from October to March.” Surely being camp mother to high-spirited teenage rowers on away trips would have tried the patience of even the most dedicated and skilful teacher?

“Not really,” she says. Rowers are very focused. They have big days and they are happy to get to bed. We’d all be up before six. There weren’t the sort of shenanigans you might expect from school camps.” Then there have been the overseas trips with big student groups and, sometimes, working in tandem with her husband. Robin and Terry took 48 kids to Australia last year and she took a group to the USA this year. So she’s kept up a cracking pace to an age where many would be thinking about retirement. In her last years at TGS, more senior roles have seen her have less classroom and contact time with students. “I’ve had more time to recharge and that does make the days easier. But teaching English is one of the toughest jobs around. In the current environment, with the internalassessment model, the workload is just overwhelming for many teachers. “The system teachers are now working in is incredibly wearing and many are at breaking point. “I meet up with friends who left teaching years ago, and they say they can’t believe that I’m still doing it. I guess the love of it has kept me going.” She must know nearly every kid in Devonport – and their parents. And she knows she’s made a difference. “Along the way, you get a handful of lovely cards from the kids. One I will never forget read: ‘You are reigniting my passion for English’. For me, that’s enough!” Holding acknowledges that getting her nights and weekends back will be a very welcome change. She says the extra-curricular load her generation of teachers all accepted as part of the job is now viewed differently by a generation of teachers who are more aware of work-life balance. So she’ll be happy to swap some of that workload for walks on Orewa Beach and happy memories. “It’s been an amazing journey and I’m going out on a high.”
