Ram raid at Victoria Superette but owners resilient A ram raid at Victoria Superette on Sunday night caused thousands of dollars in damage but offenders left with nothing.

A car smashed through the front door of the shop at around midnight.

The loud bang woke Hina Lee and Jeff

Hwang, who have owned the dairy for 12 years and live on the premises.

“My husband rushed out and yelled loudly,” Lee said.

Two teenage offenders inside the shop, who were attempting to break into the cigarette cabinet, were spooked and ran outside to a waiting car.

It is the first time the shop has been broken into during the couple’s ownership. “Devonport is a very safe and secure area,” Lee said.

They reopened the superette the next day and were thankful for the letters, flowers and well wishes from locals.

“People here are very good-hearted,” Lee said.

Belmont Park squash players take NZ junior titles Two Belmont Park squash players have won national junior titles.

Gabe Yam beat Anthony Lepper to take the Boys Under-19 title, while Grace Spencer won the Girls Under-11 championship, beating Zoe Lepper. The matches were played at North Shore Squash Club.

Belmont narrowly missed out on three titles, with Ella Lash losing the Under-15 Girls final to Sophie Hodges.

It’s been a massive year for Belmont players, with Yam playing for New Zealand alongside Matthew Lucente at the world junior squash open in India.

As well as being New Zealand’s top junior, in the latest squash rankings Yam is now number five on the senior list.

This means he is a serious contender to represent New Zealand at senior level.

Last month, a young Belmont side won the men’s New Zealand E-Grade team championships.

Drones off the mountain menu

Committee will consider applications for drone use on the authority-administered cones.

The drone issue was discussed recently at a TMA meeting.

“Management have observed members of the public using drones at Tūpuna Maunga for either filming purposes or general recreation, such as practice flying, on a relatively frequent basis,” a report to the authority said.

“The use of drones for filming includes both commercial and private purposes. For example, members of the public may seek to film wedding ceremonies on the maunga with the use of drones or to film whānau and other gatherings.

“The use of drones raises health and safety and privacy issues, and may impact the enjoyment by people of the spaces,” the report said.

TMA management said drone use on maunga contravened a number of values.

“The Wairuatanga/Spiritual value recognises that the maunga are sacred places to mana whenua and inspire reverence and respect.

The Mana Whai a Rēhia/Recreational value promotes recreational activities that take into account the sacredness of the maunga and, in particular, the tihi,” the report said.

DevonportProperty.nz Report — September 2018 Devonport house sales bucking the Auckland trend The latest statistics of property sales and prices for Auckland over recent months have continued to show that prices are flat or falling slightly. Set against this backdrop, the Devonport market of house sales shows a robust resistance to such pressure as demand for quality homes is maintained.

Over the past year, the sales of houses across Devonport totalled 171, a rise of 16% with a median price of $1,750,000 in September, up very slightly on the same time last year.

Compare that to the North Shore generally and you see that from a total of 2,933 house sales, volumes were down 9% and prices have eased back 3% to $1,110,000.

Looking to the wider Auckland region, house sales over the past year have seen volume down 2% and prices ease 1% to a median price of $915,000.

have seen the local Devonport market with a total of 42 sales and 54 new property listings hitting the market. This strong selection of new listings has gone some way to providing greater purchase options for eager buyers in the market.

On early indications from the first weeks of October, it looks like this level of available properties for sale will rise significantly as the market gets into full gear for Spring and Summer.

UNIT SALES Whilst the majority of sales across Devonport are houses, one in five of all sales are units, townhouses and apartments.

The market for units has been, as previously reported, experiencing a significant slump.

There are though, early signs of a pick-up in this sector with 22 sales of units over the past 12 months, which whilst down from the peak levels of 42 sales 18 months ago, is an improvement on the bottom of the market three months ago with just 15 sales in the preceding 12 months.

Prices for units though remain weak, with a 13% year-on-year decline to $713,000.

Young skier wins national freestyle title

The 10-year-old won the Under-12 category at the Junior Freestyle Nationals at Cardrona, taking gold in the half-pipe and slopestyle.

Liam has now been selected in the New Zealand skiing development squad.

The Richards family has been in New Zealand for almost four years, but Liam has been skiing since age two, first honing his skills in Switzerland, where the family returns each year.

His mum Julliette said: “Liam used to follow our eldest Callum down the slopes from the age of about four – it was quite nerve-racking for a mother.”

Callum, now in Year 12 at Takapuna Grammar, is an accomplished skier himself, winning Auckland Secondary Schools and North Island freestyling titles.

It was Liam’s fourth national competition.

But even so it was a surprise to win the title as he still has one year left in the under-12 division and was competing against older boys.

While Liam’s development-squad selection will mean more trips to the mountains, much of the training for freestyle skiing is done on trampolines and a compression airbag.

By the time the freestyle moves make it to the slopes they are well practised, which cuts down on injuries, Juliette says.

Interest Rate Outlook We are seeing a rather strange dynamic in interest rates lately, with US rates on the rise and NZ rates steady to actually falling a few points in the one-and two-year fixed mortgage rates.

Generally, when US rates rise we tend to follow, particularly at the longer-term rates as they tend to benchmark against the US 10-year bond rate, which is now up at 3.25%.

The Reserve Bank expects the Official Cash Rate (OCR) to remain at 1.75% in NZ for the next year or so, and it could in fact go up or down depending on economic conditions. This will keep our short-term mortgage rates at these historic low levels in the low 4%’s for a while yet. At some stage though, if US rates continue to rise, it is likely most other countries will follow as capital flows tend to follow higher yields.

A picnic table and memorial plaque to recognise the late John McHugh and his parents are planned for Cheltenham Beach.

Local identity McHugh, who ran restaurant and reception venue McHugh’s of Cheltenham for 34 years, died in January 2015, aged 57.

He had earlier suffered a massive heart attack while driving on Lake Rd. McHugh also owned Duders of Devonport on King Edward Pde, another popular venue for events and celebrations.

McHugh served on the Devonport Community Board for six years from 2001, and was a long-time member of the

Community Board from 2001.

The Flagstaff Notes

I’m disappointed at the choice of name for Ryman Healthcare’s retirement village.

Ryman has plumped for William Sanders – New Zealand’s most decorated naval hero. Sanders won a Victoria Cross in 1917, in the First World War. But while Ryman has played up the local connection of his Navy service, Sanders’ relationship to Devonport appears to have been scant.

According to the Encyclopedia of New Zealand (1966 edition), it appears he grew up in Auckland city and Takapuna. From the age of 15, he went to sea, working on coastal ships around New Zealand. He was called up to the Navy in 1915, and moved up the ranks to Lieutenant-Commander on 25 April 1917.

Sanders was awarded the Victoria Cross on 30 April 1917. He was in command of HMS Prize, a three-masted topsail

schooner that engaged in combat with a U-93 German submarine. The ship was holed many times. But Sanders calmly held fire until the sub was at close range, and then opened up and the submarine was sunk.

Sanders was also awarded the Distinguished Service Order for another action against a German submarine on 12 June 1917, but was lost at sea before it was gazetted.

Sanders was clearly a brave man and an accomplished mariner. But my point is his actual connection to Devonport was only in passing.

Ryman, being a commercial entity, could run into difficulty with historically prominent families not necessarily wanting their names attached to a retirement village.

The family of yachtsman Sir Peter Blake or the Duders – who have a strong connections to the site (once Duders brickworks) – may not have wanted the village named after them. The Duder family has said they were not approached.

But I wonder how far Ryman cast its net. Why not the Wayne Shelford Village, in honour of one of our greatest All Black captains, who played more than 100 games for North Shore Rugby Club and served in the Navy for many years?

And given the fact the village is built on Ngati Whatua land, a Maori name may have

The Devonport Flagstaff Page 11 been more appropriate – Chief Eru Patuone, who is buried at the foot of Mt Victoria, for example. That Ngati Whatua owns the land may in fact have ruled out Shelford, as he is of Ngapuhi descent.

For many years, the land, when occupied

by Navy housing, was known as the Whakakura Block. Whakakura would have had greater local historical significance.

At one stage Ryman said a naming competition would be held, but this never happened. It should have, to get the public more involved.

The Glow Festival last weekend, centring on Windsor Reserve, and the After Five party in Clarence St, were once again great successes.

I’ve said it before, but wouldn’t it be great if Clarence St could be closed off on a more regular basis, perhaps one Friday a month during daylight-saving hours, to become a regular attraction for tourists and locals alike?

In the winter, a regular event could transfer to Devonport Wharf.

After a slow winter, Devonport businesses need a good shot in the arm and it would expand on last month’s popular Park(ing) Day, when car parks were replaced with art and other installations, which claimed back the streets for public use.

Last month, several cars were broken into along Calliope Rd and Glen Rd and attempts made to start them, causing a lot of damage but not succeeding in actually driving any away, as far as we know.

My Honda Accord was one of the cars, but I was away and returned on 6 October to find the ignition smashed and the back quarter glass also smashed.

Police have fingerprinted the car.

I am not certain exactly when the breakins happened. I just wondered if anyone may have seen anything – from Friday 21 September onwards.

Departing veteran will miss the TGS buzz After nearly four decades at Takapuna Grammar School, Robin Holding is heading to a new job. She tells Helen Vause about the wrench of leaving, changes in education and taking a firm hand in the classroom.

This month she leaves the school as one of its longest-serving staff, after nearly four decades of teaching there.

In her own school days, she was Robin Jenkins, and she’d arrived at Takapuna Grammar (TGS) midway through her secondary-school years because the family had moved up from Wellington for her father’s job in education. Although they settled in Northcote, her dad had his eye on TGS for his daughters and they would bus to their new school from home.

“There’s no way he would have sent me to an all-girls school. He was very pro coeducation,” remembers Holding.

And just like her father, Holding is passionate about education and teaching.

Leaving TGS, she takes with her years of great memories of her life and times there.

It’s the school she came to early in her career. Her first job out of teacher training was at Epsom Girls Grammar, but when a job came up at TGS, she went after it.

“Teaching has been fantastic,” she says.

It’s one of her last days in the classroom, with many goodbyes ahead and that farewell afternoon tea in the staffroom looming.

“Yes, it’s going to be a big wrench. There are lots of people I will miss. I will miss the challenge of working with teens and I will miss the buzz of the school community. It’s going to be a big change, but I am ready for it.

There comes a tipping point for all of us and for me it is time for a change.”

Holding had thought teaching at TGS would very likely be her last job, until a new opportunity in education – out of the classroom – came her way. She’s leaving to work for Advanced Learning Ltd, an organisation founded by Dr Ian Hunter, an educator and author, who is widely known amongst staff and students for his groundbreaking academicwriting programme, ‘Write that Essay’.

Robin and her husband, Terry Holding, who himself has recently retired from teaching at TGS, were already making changes. The couple moved from their home in Vauxhall Rd to an apartment at Kensington Park in Orewa.

And they’re enjoying it, says Robin, who has been commuting back to her job at TGS. “We love the lifestyle, and when we got up there we found old friends both from education and from the neighbourhood had already moved up that way before us.”

Not that this busy couple has eased up much. Terry is a busy JP, and he’s often making the morning commute with Robin for business in the city.

Robin and Terry met at TGS, where he was the Head of the English, when she arrived as a staff member. They married in 1986, and

October 19, 2018 later their son Tim went to the school from 2000 to 2004.

Robin too was Head of English, stepping down in 2010 after nine years in the role.

She had an interest in journalism and media studies and part of her legacy at the school is the Robin Holding Award for top students in media.

In recent years, she’s been responsible for overseeing the students who write the stories for the regular pages the school takes in The Flagstaff. That’s been a very successful

Just busy.” venture for both the students and the school, and the local community, she says.

Mentoring her group of eager newshounds also brings back memories of a stint of sports reporting Holding did years ago, phoning in her stories to newspapers from weekend sports fixtures.

“I saw how the professionals changed my stories from the way I had written them and I learned a lot from that.”

In her near 40 years at TGS, Holding has seen lots of changes in the school and in education. She’s seen out six principals. She saw the back of caning kids in schools when it was abolished back in 1982. She recalls the mufti years for seniors in the 80s and 90s – and the subsequent passing of that era with no regrets. She remembers very well

the coming of NCEA and the changes that brought. But bringing in NCEA didn’t stop the world turning, she says.

Today, the school is a much more sophisticated environment, with far greater diversity in courses and opportunities for students. And the students are different too from the young people she remembers.

“Some say that standards have fallen. But I don’t think our students are worse than earlier generations in terms of behaviour or study.

We’ve got some really top kids.

“I’ve seen big changes in attitudes to education among students and their parents.

And that’s also part of a societal shift. As the demands of employers are changing, everyone is talking about upskilling.

“Students are not just looking at where they’ll be doing their first degree; they’re also looking now at where they’ll be carrying on to do their second degree. And without a doubt, many more students these days do go on to do tertiary education. That is the expectation now.

“I have never had any discipline issues and I’m known for being firm. Its often been challenging, but I don’t take any rubbish. I believe I’ve set high standards.

“I have really loved teaching. It’s a great feeling when you close that classroom door and you are queen of your own domain. Yes it’s very busy, but I’ve never found it stressful.

Just busy.”

Outside the classroom, Holding has played a big part in the school’s rowing community.

She’s been the teacher in charge of the sport over three periods of time since 1992.

“They were amazing years and we have made lasting friendships with so many kids and parents through rowing. But it was also a huge demand on time and energy. In any season, I would be away from home for about 23 nights at rowing camps from October to March.”

Surely being camp mother to high-spirited teenage rowers on away trips would have tried the patience of even the most dedicated and skilful teacher?

“Not really,” she says. Rowers are very focused. They have big days and they are happy to get to bed. We’d all be up before six. There weren’t the sort of shenanigans you might expect from school camps.”

Then there have been the overseas trips with big student groups and, sometimes, working in tandem with her husband. Robin and Terry took 48 kids to Australia last year and she took a group to the USA this year.

So she’s kept up a cracking pace to an age where many would be thinking about retirement. In her last years at TGS, more senior roles have seen her have less classroom and contact time with students.

“I’ve had more time to recharge and that does make the days easier. But teaching English is one of the toughest jobs around.

In the current environment, with the internalassessment model, the workload is just overwhelming for many teachers.

“The system teachers are now working in is incredibly wearing and many are at breaking point.

“I meet up with friends who left teaching years ago, and they say they can’t believe that I’m still doing it. I guess the love of it has kept me going.”

She must know nearly every kid in Devonport – and their parents. And she knows she’s made a difference.

“Along the way, you get a handful of lovely cards from the kids. One I will never forget read: ‘You are reigniting my passion for English’. For me, that’s enough!”

Holding acknowledges that getting her nights and weekends back will be a very welcome change. She says the extra-curricular load her generation of teachers all accepted as part of the job is now viewed differently by a generation of teachers who are more aware of work-life balance.

So she’ll be happy to swap some of that workload for walks on Orewa Beach and happy memories.

“It’s been an amazing journey and I’m going out on a high.”

Heritage Awards

Pritchard recognised with heritage award Long-time Devonport heritage and environment activist Mike Pritchard has been recognised with the highest accolade at the Devonport-Takapuna Heritage Awards.

Pritchard was presented with a Heritage Champion Award for almost five decades of environmental and heritage conservation and preservation in Devonport.

He moved to Devonport in about 1970, and quickly fell in love with the suburb and the local community. He was then a lecturer in town planning at the University of Auckland, where he pioneered teaching programmes around environmental sustainability.

At the time, a project to reclaim and develop Ngataringa Bay into a marina and residential subdivision had been approved

by Devonport Borough Council.

Pritchard and a number of other concerned residents swept into power at the 1971 local-body elections, and one of the first resolutions they committed to was to refuse consent for the marina project. The council was successfully sued for ‘Breach of Contract’, and damages were found against it. Ratepayers had to foot the bill of the settlement, but the bay was saved.

Pritchard was a councillor for 13 years, and during that time led a programme that changed Ngataringa Bay from a tip to a fully sustainable recycling centre (Devonport had the first waste-recycling centre in New Zealand), and encouraged community gardening projects.

Pritchard was an integral member of the Devonport Centre Plan Working Group to help instigate a Devonport Master Plan – a blueprint for the development of the town centre, which enabled the Marine Square project and the boardwalk to align Devonport Wharf with Victoria Rd. He led projects to preserve and make accessible Devonport’s built heritage around its naval history, working, with the support of Department of Conservation, on the Fort Takapuna project, and the adjacent Tamaki Reserve land.

A lifetime contribution… Mike Pritchard with wife Jill and family He was also a member of the Tamaki Reserve Protection Trust that won a court case against the government, which wanted to sell Fort Takapuna. Helen Clark’s new government subsequently declared most of the area a public reserve.

After retiring as Dean of Fine Arts at the University of Auckland, he became chair of the Tamaki Reserve Protection Trust.

He initiated and organised, with some financial assistance by the Devonport Community Board, the reinstallation of previously blocked off sewerage drains from the Officer ’s Mess and barrack

buildings, and, with Chris Mullane, led the restoration and refit of the barrack buildings on Takapuna Point.

Pritchard involved students from Takapuna Grammar in recreating and restoring the history of the fort, through the building of replica fittings and objects.

He was also the driver behind getting the Passchendaele Remembrance and exhibition at Takapuna Point, when it was turned down by the Auckland War Museum.

His research on the reserve – everything from the location of the original owner’s house and stables to the design of 19thcentury military uniforms – was used in the work programmes on the fort.

In a speech at the heritage awards, Devonport-Takapuna Local Board member and former Devonport Community Board chair, Mike Cohen, said Pritchard’s contribution had been immense.

“Certain key themes come to mind when we mention the name of Michael Pritchard, namely: valuing and conserving our heritage whether natural or built; environmental sustainability; saving and retaining public space for future generations.

“He is a man who is highly respected and held in high esteem; a man of integrity.”

“We are truly fortunate to be able to bestow upon Michael Pritchard this the first lifetime Heritage Award.”

Devonport Museum receives award for service to community Five heritage awards were announced and presented at the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board’s 2018 Heritage Awards event at Lake House Arts in Takapuna.

The Heritage Champion Awards went to Devonport’s Mike Pritchard (see story opposite) and the Devonport Museum, which was recognised for its ongoing service to the community, including visitors and local schools.

Heritage Restoration Awards were presented to Piers and Alisha Kay for their restoration and conservation work at 13 Bardia Street in Belmont, and to Sue Fleischl and Michael Booth for their restoration at 14 Rewiti Avenue in Hauraki.

Gavin Sheehan received the Heritage Education Award in recognition of his work in recording and installing additional plaques that recognise soldiers from Takapuna who died during World War I. Devonport-Takapuna Local Board member and awards presenter Mike Cohen thanked those that supported this year’s awards.

“Recognising our great success stories is critical for our communities to know and value our heritage – thereby contributing towards creating a culture where our people will, and want to, conserve their heritage, natural or built,” he said.

Judges for this year’s awards were Paddy Stafford-Bush, Dave Veart, Debbie Dunsford and Antony Matthews.

Plenty of practice unlocks rewards for Belmont school band Belmont Intermediate School band Locked and Loaded picked up three awards at this year’s regional Bandquest.

They took out best original song and best lyrics, and the band’s Holly Isherwood was named best drummer, in the competition held at Auckland Girls Grammar in August.

“They worked really hard and have given up a lot of mornings and lunchtimes,” said teacher and band coach, James Lauder.

“They had a great time and got very excited.”

“I was running around like a two-year-old, with all the excitement,” said guitarist Joe Brownlie.

On Wednesday we wear pink

On a late Wednesday evening, dozens of women gathered together at the Girls Support Girls Cabaret showcase. Curated by the TGS Performing Arts Council, the event celebrated our many talented female performers, and acknowledged the recent 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New Zealand.

“It was a really great experience hosting,” gushes India Worsnop, who was MC for the evening. “There was a very supportive and uplifting feeling shared by everyone in the room, and we were very pleased with the turnout, as the event was held to commemorate such an important idea for our community.”

Amongst the 20 acts was a ‘Suffragette Dance’ choreographed by Year 13 student Maria Morris, which was described by audience members as a “powerful, engaging performance that really summed up what the evening was all about”. Recent talent show winner Janayah Wadsworth also gave another stellar performance.

Staff members Mrs Charlett-Green and Miss Alana Drake also made appearances, their amazing vocals proving a wonderful surprise for the audience.

Aside from the outstanding musical talents, the evening also included delicious meals for all guests, with dinner provided by the TGS Tuck Shop staff, and home-made desserts by dedicated Arts Council member Hazel Escott. After the fantastic success of the Girls Support Girls Cabaret, the Arts Council is hoping to hold many more events in the future to continue show casing amazing talent.

Supporting the Litter Less campaign Several students entered the Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) Litter Less competition with some success. Wenyi Soon gained second place in the article division, with a report titled Protecting our 75% and Katja Phutaraksa Neef was given an Honourable Mention in the Photography division, with a shot called Deadpool 3: The return of Microplastics.

These two girls will be invited to YRE Winners Workshop, to be held at University of Auckland.

They will also have their submissions published on the Keep New Zealand B website, and will be presented with a YRE T-Shirt. The school has also been offered an additional five places at the Winners Workshop for students who have a strong interest in environmental sustainability and journalism.

Scoring at the top of their craft

Our Musical Theatre students have once again done exceptionally well in their Trinity College London exams. Nine groups were awarded Distinction, which requires a score of 85% or higher. Four of these were at Grade 6 and another four at Grade 7. All entrants received no less than a high Merit.

One Grade 8 group – consisting of Year 13 students Maria Morris, Francesca Ramdhanie, Rebecca Scholtz and Emma Self were awarded an impressive 94%, which is TGS’ highest score to date. Maria Morris said of the result, “I’m so happy that we got Distinction! Especially since last year my group got Merit, so for me it is amazing to see an improvement.”

The Trinity exams were added to the curriculum in 2017, with the arrival of new teacher Mr Robert Dil. Students sit either Grade 6, 7 or 8 depending on their year level.

The exam requires each group to devise a performance sequence, containing equal parts singing, dancing and acting, spending at least a third of the time demonstrating two of these skills at once. “It was a rollercoaster journey, gathering experience along the way,” said Year 11 student Orlando Tyson. “It was a joy to be a part of, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

Success on badminton court

It has been a great year for all of our badminton players. Both boys and girls teams participated in the North Harbour Badminton inter-school competition successfully against some much more experienced opposition teams. The senior boys team – Jayden Choi, Luke Fraser (captain), Jason Li, Lampard Liu and Ruiliang Nie – achieved some especially great victories against some of Auckland’s strongest schools. For only the second time in our history, the team earnt a Merit award for their accomplishments

The annual TGS badminton championship also revealed some extremely talented players. With 20 participants, two people shone the brightest during the championship. Amanda Dai won the girls singles and also finished first in the doubles, partnering with Lampard Liu. Lampard took the title of top badminton player for 2018, following his victories in both the singles and doubles and his position as No 1 player in the boys’ senior team. Already representing New

Zealand in Badminton, it comes to no surprise that Lampard stole the championship. Asked about his year regarding badminton, Lampard commented, “I used to play badminton competitively in China, so playing in New Zealand is an experience I will never forget.”

All the players are appreciative of the efforts of their coaches Kent Fraser and Mr Paul Joseph, and assistant coach Levi.

Murdoch breaks record at Youth Olympics Devonport athlete Murdoch McIntyre is believed to have broken the New Zealand under-17, 2000m steeplechase record at the World Youth Olympic Games held in Buenos Aires.

Murdoch’s time of 5.55.07 was inside the previous record which is said to be 5.57. He placed 12th in a race dominated

by African runners.

Speaking to the Devonport Flagstaff prior to the event on 12 October, Murdoch’s prime aim at the Youth Olympics was to better the New Zealand record.

‘Hands off our parks’: policy formalised A policy demanding that Auckland Council “keep your hands off our parks” is set to be formalised by the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board.

In recent months, the board has become concerned about council investigations into selling off public land around Auckland.

A formal motion opposing sales was put to the board’s meeting by member Grant Gillon

on Tuesday night after the Flagstaff went to press.

The motion said: “As a matter of policy, [the board] does not support the disposal of parkland (or part thereof) within the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board area, whether it is gazetted reserve land, or land currently used as (or access to) parkland.”

Member Mike Cohen seconded the motion.

Some of the key topics discussed were traffic management, local facilities and environmental initiatives.

For those who couldn’t make it along, we confirmed there will be a full traffic-management plan in place during the construction period and local roads and walkways will remain open, although from time to time there may be temporary closures for safety reasons. Initial earthworks have started and builders are due on-site early next year.

Locals review the Hillary development plans at Little & Friday and Auckland Council with the upgrade of Lake Road now that it is in the Long Term Plan. We are also very keen to encourage Auckland Council to spend some of the $40 million of development contributions, from our developments, on local projects like upgrading Lake Road and other community initiatives.

Environmentally, the existing Hillary roads and houses have no stormwater treatment and it discharges into Shoal Bay, which is typical of the

infrastructure across the Devonport peninsula. As part of the first stage of Hillary, we will be treating 100 per cent of the stormwater coming off the development, so the estuary will be a lot cleaner than in the past. During the construction phase, we have a very strict plan in place for the control of sediment and erosion to make sure any run-off is held on-site.

The godwits arrive in the nick of time for welcome Close to 175 bar-tailed godwits have been counted in Ngataringa Bay ahead of Devonport peninsula’s first welcome event for the birds on Labour Weekend Saturday.

Keen godwit watchers, Graham Pitts and his partner, marvel at the birds that are feeding in Ngatargina Bay. “They’ve flown nonstop from Alaska, the longest non-stop flight of any non-seabird in the world,” he says.

Pitts has watched the birds over many years. “Currently, their preferred wading area is in the middle of the bay,” he says.

With other like-minded residents, he is interested in the recorded annual count of the godwits that make Shoal and Ngataringa Bays their feeding ground for the southern-hemisphere summer.

Bird lover and professional photographer, Philip Moll, says: “We usually get 300 birds moving between Shoal Bay and Ngataringa Bay to feed and roost or nest. They arrive, exhausted from mid-September and feed from the bay’s shell banks and tidal flats.”

Copy Shoppe closure after 20 years Illness, impending retirement and declining revenues have forced the closure of The Devonport Copy Shoppe, one of the village’s oldest businesses.

The shop has been an institution on Victoria Rd for more than 20 years. And owners Lynn and Matt Walker have been working there for almost all that time.

The shop was originally set up by Chris and Rhonda Rogers. Lynn started at the firm in 1998, Matt joined in 1999 and they subsequently bought the business.

The couple recall a different age, when printing was much more an essential part of life, before digital files fired across the internet became common.

For example, architectural plans for resource consents needed to be printed out. “Now councils accept PDFs of plans over email,” Matt says.

Lynn adds: “We are a bit like New Zealand Children also had the chance to Post – they don’t have enough letters. We don’t have enough things to copy.”

A lot of printing is also now done overseas, and ordered online.

Lynn has had heart problems this year, and with Matt about to undergo prolonged treatment for bowel cancer, they have decided it is time to call it quits.
