Supermarket puts prominent Lake Rd site up for sale A high-profile commercial site at the entrance to Devonport is about to go on the market.

Woolworths has decided to sell its land at 25 Lake Rd, a former service station site the supermarket chain previously planned to develop as an online order-collection depot.

“Following our decision not to proceed

with the direct-to-boot facility we have been considering a range of options for the property,” a Woolworths spokesperson said.

“We have had a number of parties approach us on an unsolicited basis to express interest in purchasing the property, and following further consideration we have

decided to take the property to market for sale.”

No timeframe for the sale had been set, but it appears likely this year.

Plans for the direct-to-boot operation were “paused” in March 2025. They were first revealed in November 2023, after the company lodged consents for the project.

Demoted councillor raises developer donation to mayor North Shore ward councillor John Gillon says his demotion from a council position last week was partly due to him attending a protest against the proposed Devonport redevelopment project.

Mayor Wayne Brown demoted Gillon and other councillors who voted against the Brown-backed 7.9% rates rise.

Gillon lost his deputy chairmanship of Auckland Council’s regulatory and safety committee.

“When speaking to me, [Brown] raised that I had attended the Devonport protest as a reason for the demotion,” Gillon told the Flagstaff.

Brown had said Peninsula Capital’s proposed Devonport Lanes was a good development.

Addressing the council on his dismissal, Gillon said while he appreciated the mayor giving him a heads-up on the demotion move, “it is my recollection of our conversation” that Brown linked the demotion to Gillon’s voting record and his attendance at an event opposing the fast-tracking of the Devonport development, four storeys over the Unitary Plan height limit.

“I was actually there in my role as a ward councillor, as I should have been. And I note that the Devonport Flagstaff recently had on the front page an article linking the developer to the mayor’s electoral fund, which is a matter of public record. I hope that has nothing to do with it as that would be very inappropriate.

“I’ll leave it there,” Gillon ended.

“I will continue to represent my ward and their concerns and continue to champion my election promises around this table.”

Watts says most feedback supports development plan The Flagstaff has been seeking comment from local MP Simon Watts on Peninsula Capital’s fast-track proposal for Devonport village.

Last week his office responded with a statement “attributable to Simon Watts MP for North Shore”: “As this proposal is currently before the Fast-track Approvals Panel, it would be inappropriate for me to comment on it while that process is underway.

“In my role as the local MP, the majority of feedback I’ve received has been supportive of the proposed development.

I have not submitted a letter on the proposal.

“I was unable to attend the public meeting [at Harmony Hall on 8 July] as Parliament was sitting in Wellington. The main issue raised with my office has been the need for improvements to Lake Rd, which I will continue to advocate for funding to start from Auckland Council.”

Exhibition topic fits with current events in Devonport Grant Alexander explores the issues of fast-tracking and artificial intelligence (AI) in his exhibition at Satellite2 gallery, opening this Saturday.

Fast-tracking has become a hot local topic due to Peninsula Capital’s plans for buildings of up to eight storeys in central Devonport, but Alexander was not surprised at the news. “Eighteen months ago, it was clear to me that the fast-tracking legislation would bring challenges and cause problems throughout the country. I was inspired to do some paintings as a commentary on what I consider to be poorly drafted legislation designed to accelerate commercial growth,” he says.

His exhibition consists of 22 works completed over the past two years, and he says it feels good to be having these conversations with his own community. He asks if fast-tracking has put Aotearoa on the “wrong track”, and questions the resources required to fuel AI. Though a few of his pieces are paintings, Alexander typically uses a mixed-media approach with collage and photo elements in his work.

He clarifies that he is not anti-development, but opposes the type of development that is made without considering the future of the location.

“This has nothing to do with the quality of the design. It’s more about the lack of transparency, the speed and the lack of a holistic brief.”

Alexander referred to a 2025 Depot exhibition, “Urban Adaptations – Devonport Tomorrow” by University of Auckland architectural students as a better example of a holistic brief, where students accounted for affordable housing, student accommodation, and more ways to bring a younger generation into Devonport.

Although he noted the design itself might not be ideal as it was more of an exercise for younger students, the approach to the project considered the entire village and surrounding area. “The current scheme doesn’t. And that’s because the pricing of land is being used to govern the outcome at the expense of citizens.

“My fear when I started doing these paintings was to what extent would young people be able to live in Devonport.”

He also says he is not against AI, but is concerned about the lack of regulations and guardrails. “Where will the power come from? Where will the water come from? And at what expense?”

His objective is to provoke thought and provide entertainment.

The exhibition is also a family affair; Alexander is excited to share the spotlight with his eldest grandson Harry Prinsep and Gold Coastbased sister Glenys Howard, who also have pieces in the exhibition.

Prinsep, a former Takapuna Grammar School student, is flying home from Victoria University for the exhibition opening. His collection is titled Lines of Passage. He paints birds, landscapes and Aotearoa history.

“We have a close relationship among our creative processes,” Alexander says.

Community workshop could seek to own Claystore

Leaseholders ponder ownership... The Devonport-Takapuna Local Board (DTLB) has asked for the possible sale of the council-owned building to be investigated.

“It would take a lot of analysis on both sides,” said Devonport Community Workshop chairperson and volunteer Brett Marshall of the possibility of ownership. “It’s not our number one option, but it has been considered.”

Options to sell or refurbish the Claystore building appeared to split DTLB members at a recent council session.

The building, leased by the workshop, is heritage-listed in the Auckland Unitary Plan (AUP) but has weathertightness issues and is deteriorating.

Senior council project manager Steph Westmore presented four options to the board, including doing nothing. The other three were: • Paying $1.05 million to do the minimum works to make the building weathertight.

• Spending $2.95 million to fully refurbish the building including first-floor seismic strengthening.

• Investigate selling the building.

Westmore also advised the board they should consider the precedent they might set for other heritage buildings, especially if wanting to sell, and if they wanted council staff to take particular approaches to heritage projects in future. “[Heritage buildings] aren’t going to go away. You can’t demolish them.”

DTLB deputy chair Scott Macarthur said the building’s heritage status was “not because it’s a beautiful building, but because of the story”.

Resource consent was obtained in 2024 to refurbish the whole building, including putting in a lift to make the entire building accessible, a plan which was estimated to cost $3.65 million. Westmore says this plan was and remains outside of budget.

To allow any of the refurbishment options presented to the board, the consent would need to be amended.

She said doing nothing would make the building difficult to maintain as safe for the lease holders, who she said were already struggling to obtain funding and complete community outreach due to the lack of a long term lease, which could not be offered in the building’s current condition.

She said cladding on the first floor has decayed, some of its timber is worsening, and some of the roofing is deteriorating.

“The longer you leave it, the worse it gets.”

DTLB board member Gavin Busch said expected legislation updates could mean seismic strengthening was not required, and recommended the board refurbish the whole building with the provision to petition council to get the seismic requirement lowered if amendments were officially passed.

Refurbishing the entire building without seismic strengthening could cost $1.5 million.

Board members Macarthur, Garth Ellingham, Terence Harpur and George Wood wanted to further investigate selling the building.

Harpur suggested using buckets in the building. “I appreciate it’s frustrating for the [workshop] with the leaks, but they seem to be operating fine. We have 72 other projects,” he said.

Westmore said the heritage status of the building could narrow opportunities for buyers and leasing.

Chair Trish Deans advocated for the $1.05 million option of minimum refurbishment, and said the board lacked the capacity to be expansive with the project.

“We have tenants, it’s our responsibility to protect that building, and I don’t see it as being able to be sold.”

Ellingham agreed that if the sale of the building was not viable, the minimum refurbishment was his preference.

Westmore said she would take the project to the council’s acquisition team to investigate sale, and report back.

Marshall said the workshop’s preference was for council to “fix the envelope”, including the cladding and roofing, to make the building weathertight, which aligns with the $1.05m option proposed to the local board.

“We’ve been here since the early 80s, we’d hate to lose it. The workshop serves a strong community need.

“These days people don’t have workshops anymore, they don’t have tool,” Marshall said.

He said the workshop is well used, including as a place to teach young people valuable skills and to help people repair items they would otherwise take to the tip.

“There is nowhere else for us to go that is viable. It could be the end of the community workshop.”

Depot scrambles to find patrons, review programme Depot arts hub is using the creative resources of its team to rethink how services can be funded after having its application for Creative New Zealand money declined.

Currently receiving $90,000 a year from the government agency, the Depot, a registered charity, applied for $150,000 towards three years of growth.

The application was based on Creative NZ advice.

Depot director Amy Saunders said having the application for money turned down was a “massive shock”.

But she’s philosophical: the Depot was up against national and regional organisations and demand was high. Too little money

was available.

Having recently returned from overseas, Saunders will sit down with the Depot board in the next two weeks to review current programming. “We will probably have to change the way we do things,” she said.

She has faith in the organisation’s resilience, however, and has no doubt about the value of its services.

Workshops and classes are booked out.

“We know there’s huge demand and we can see a future where Devonport is a really vibrant, creative destination.”

Saunders has been thinking about alternative funding opportunities and has just set up a new patron programme. Memberships

range from $50 to $10,000 per year.

Tapping into private and corporate partnerships is new for the Depot, but Saunders said other galleries have done so for years.

Craig’s Investment Partners has just become a supporter and relationships with local partners such as Resource Recovery Devonport will continue.

Saunders said public funders often identified Devonport as an affluent suburb capable of supporting itself. With public funding reducing, the Depot had to diversify how it survived and thrived. “We’re now in a position where we have to lean into the community to say, ‘come on board and work with us’.”

Hollie decorates Christmas event Chart-topping singer Hollie Smith has been confirmed for Devonport’s Christmas Festival 2026.

Smith (right) will headline the Jingle in the Park picnic concert on Windsor Reserve on the Saturday evening of a festival running over the weekend of 5-6 December.

She will play old favourites as well as songs from her soon to be released eighth album. Supporting artists will include singer-songwriter and Takapuna Grammar School head boy Nathan Fry. Shane Cortese and the 8-Track Band will close out the evening playing Australasian rock classics.

Santa himself is also rumoured to be making an appearance on stage. Local food businesses will offer picnic options.

Stanley Bay School looks for new head Stanley Bay School has launched a search for a new principal.

Long-time staff member Helen Pelham has been acting principal since mid-way through last year after then-principal Emma Tolmie left the school under sick leave provisions before her resignation last December.

“Helen is doing an exceptional job,” Stanley Bay School board member Jonathan Duncan said.

“The Board is immensely grateful for her dedication to our school, which she’s been involved with as a parent, teacher and leader for three decades.”

Parents were advised this month that the formal search for a principal was underway because, under the Education and Training Act and Education Ministry guidelines, permanent principal roles must be advertised in the Education Gazette.

To support the appointment process, the board has co-opted school parent and executive recruitment specialist Ben Mulligan, who has experience in filling senior leadership roles.

Sports clubs close to winning lease on council villa

A joint North Shore Cricket Club and North Shore Rugby Club project to take over the lease of a council-owned villa is gaining momentum after being caught up in red tape for the past two years.

At the end of July, the clubs submitted a proposal to Auckland Council to take over the lease of 55 King Edward Pde. Both clubs badly need suitable accommodation for international players and coaches visiting during their respective seasons.

Local rents are prohibitive for the young players, who end up commuting several times a week from further afield.

Rugby club senior committee chair Pete Burgess said the international players and coaches are important to both clubs.

An urgent request to allow short-term access has been included in the proposal to take over the house lease, thereby solving the accommodation problem for the clubs, while a long-term solution is explored.

Council had put the price of bringing the property up to Healthy Homes standards at $550,000, but the clubs have made their own inspections of what is required, and estimate a cost less than one-tenth of Council’s at $50,000.

Devonport-Takapuna Local Board members Gavin Busch and Scott Macarthur have been supportive of the clubs’ efforts, putting through a resolution at a board meeting to ensure the project got traction with council.

With the cricket season starting in October, Busch and Macarthur are committed to keeping a strong focus on the project’s momentum, and hope to have an outcome by mid-September.

A working bee is planned to kick-start work on the house as soon as the clubs are given the green light.

Around 200 people attended a protest outside Devonport Library, sending a strong message of opposition to the heights of new buildings proposed for the village and heavily criticising local MP Simon Watts for his silence over the contentious fasttrack proposal.

Devonport Heritage supporter Richard Jones told the crowd through a megaphone that Devonport people should have a say in the process.

Heritage advocates and the wider community were not against progress and development of Devonport village, but the Peninsula Capital fast-track proposal was up to eight storeys – double the current allowed limits.

Jones said four storeys was acceptable – “let’s stick to what’s allowed” – to respect

the heritage buildings and views to the maunga.

He led a chant of “four not eight”, which morphed into a spontaneous chant: “Where is Simon?”

Heritage chair Margot McRae told TVNZ outside the library that fast-tracking had become an issue across the country, with community groups in Arrowtown, Orewa and Christchurch all opposing fast-track applications in their areas.

Devonport Heritage had been in contact with other affected groups around the country, with the aim of forming a more united group.

Tennis club enjoys long day of celebrations

Current and former members of the Belmont Park Racquets Club gathered early this month to celebrate the opening of three new tennis courts.

The new courts expand the club’s Bayswater Ave facilities to 10 tennis courts and three squash courts.

The opening day started with around 30 people attending a dawn blessing led by local kaumatua Danny Watson.

A family tennis tournament was held in the morning, followed by an exhibition practice

by Belmont’s Chelsea Cup players.

For a life members’ challenge competition in the afternoon, 60 men and women players – in teams selected by life members – played across all 10 courts.

The official opening was also led by Watson, who noted the club’s land had once been market gardens.

“You are not tennis players, you are still gardeners – growing people.

“There’s a wonderful feel and culture to this club.”

Watts said the club was 91 “years young” and going from strength to strength as a major part of the North Shore community.

His sons had had coaching at the club.

He praised the efforts of Graeme Norman, the club president of 16 years, and the club as a whole, which “had rolled up its sleeves” to get the project completed.

Norman said the courts project had taken nine years from vision to reality, helped by a $300,000 sports facilities grant from Auckland Council and others from the Trillian Trust.

Club members took small quanties of ashes from a fire held at the blessing to sprinkle around the courts.

K-pop, Tahitian dance and waiata - International Cultural Evening had it all TGS celebrated its diversity at the recent International Cultural Evening, featuring performances by local and international students. Music, dance and traditional attire from Māori, Tahitian, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Korean and European cultures transformed Te Poho into a vibrant showcase of global culture, with visitors also enjoying food from around the world.

Students Scarlet Bentley Fisher and Sina Keeling performed the traditional Tahitian dance ote’a, known for its rapid hip movements and intricate footwork.

“The story told within our performance acknowledges the homeland of Tahiti and invites our ancestors to come together with the living through a traditional dance. It also tells a story of inviting others who aren’t part of the culture to join in,” Scarlet said.

The event was organised by the International Student Leadership Group, who coordinated performances, logistics and promotion. International Director Grant Simpkins praised their efforts.

Takapuna Grammys and Winter Lights Festival showcase TGS talent The strength of Takapuna Grammar School's Performing Arts programme has been on full display this month, with students impressing audiences at both the annual Takapuna Grammys Dance Showcase and the Takapuna Winter Lights Festival.

Held at the Bruce Mason Centre, the Takapuna Grammys Dance Showcase featured more than 150 dancers and highlighted the talent and creativity of TGS students.

Audiences enjoyed outstanding choreography, spectacular costumes and high-energy performances, with the Special Education dance group earning the audience-voted Favourite Performance of the Night award.

TGS performers also delighted crowds at the Takapuna Winter Lights Festival, which attracted an estimated 60,000 visitors over four nights. Student musicians and DJs entertained festival-goers, while TGS ballet dancers captivated audiences with their illuminated wings performance and engaging interactions with young admirers.

Prominent village site cleared for... low-rise project

A waggish reader got in touch with the Flagstaff about a prominent empty site (above left) at 2 Flagstaff Tce near Devonport village, mischievously suggesting it was going to be developed into something of four to eight storeys, as sought for the Peninsula Capital village development.

We thought we had better set the record straight. A non-heritage home (left) was demolished and a twostorey, two-home duplex (depicted in the image above right) is planned on the site. More than one dwelling on the site is a non-complying activity in a single-house zone, but council planning commissioners allowed it to go ahead “as its scale and appearance was compatible with the existing built character containing large single residential dwellings”.

Topsoil and planting plan backed for former bowls site The “soft landscape” solution suggested for the asphalt-covered former bowling club green on Achilles Crescent Reserve has been backed by the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board.

The board’s preferred options such as a basketball court or pump track were rejected due to site stormwater and flooding issues.

All three options were proposed to DTLB,

each involving removal of the existing asphalt layer and replacing it with various depths of topsoil, from 150mm to 500mm, at a cost ranging from $140,000 to $158,000.

Piles of rubble were left at the site following a contractor breaking the hard surface under the instruction of volunteers, and board member Terence Harpur said it was unfair for ratepayers to foot the cost.

But chair Trish Deans said the contractor “acted in good faith” with the group.

“A civil case is not where we want to go.

We also don’t have the money for that.”

Landscaping of the site could involve planting by Restoring Takarunga Hauraki.

Harpur said the greatest amount of topsoil should be used to ensure a good base for planting. “If you’re going to do it, do that.”

Three-year ferry wharf project begins in December

Work on an upgrade of the Devonport ferry wharf and terminal will start in December this year.

The upgrade will rebuild Piers 1 and 2 and include a full refurbishment of the

terminal waiting area.

The project will cost $31 million and take three years to complete.

The detailed design has been done and resource consent granted for Pier 2 and the

terminal waiting area.

Pier 2 and the waiting area will be closed during the renewal work.

The Flagstaff first carried a story about the renewals in June 2025.

A few additional thoughts on the Peninsula Capital fast-track proposal: when I first saw the master plan for the five buildings (up to eight storeys) I went into getting-thestory-into-the-paper mode. Later that night I became a bit paranoid: the laneways and details looked professionally rendered but the buildings behind seemed dropped in at the last minute. Could it actually be a hoax, with some correct detail but additional material thrown in with AI? Checks with Peninsula Capital the next day confirmed we had the authentic fast-track document.

Then architect Jason Mackie’s comments at the Devonport Heritage public meeting on the proposal got me thinking again. He couldn’t believe that leading architect Pip Cheshire (who died early this year) would countenance an assault on the fabric of Devonport as suggested by his firm in the plans.

Is it possible the high buildings were chucked in an attempt to get the proposal across the fast-track threshold?

Its only natural to seek the best and easiest outcome for yourself – this doesn’t only apply to developers. Why wouldn’t you put the plan forward for fast track? It’s all done in secret (at least initially). See how you go, and if you are turned down, no one is the wiser – revert to plan B? I wouldn’t be surprised, given the size and scope of the Devonport Lanes project, that there is such a contingency plan. Perhaps Peninsula Capital has a set of drawings for four-storey buildings in Devonport, which would be within Auckland Unitary Plan parameters?

Time will tell.

A couple of dozen placards were carried at the Devonport Heritage protest against Peninsula Capital’s planned development in the village. While many criticised the fast tracking or advocated four storeys rather than eight, not one mentioned Peninsula Capital by name.

The company would have been understandably surprised when news of their development broke in the Flagstaff.

But in the weeks since, public opinion has not turned against Peninsula Capital, but focused instead on local MP Simon Watts for his “no comment” stance on the fast-tracking application.

Locals have been quick to identify the nub of the issue: fast-tracking cuts out any say by the community.

Perhaps Peninsula Capital should be buoyed by protest which is not against development per se, just the spectre of eight storeys.

Simon Watts, who was flamed on numerous placards (“Where’s Simon?” one asked) and castigated for not turning up, did not get out unscathed.

While Watts may be following a strict legal line on the fast-tracking, his failure to front-foot the issue now it is in the public domain won’t gain him any new friends in Devonport, I suspect.

Past National MPs have faced angry mobs after unpopular government policy.

Twenty-five years ago then MP Wayne Mapp seemed almost at risk of being run out of town during a public meeting at Wakatere Boating Club over government plans to sell off public land south of Narrow Neck beach were revealed.

A decade or so later, Maggie Barry was forced to call a public meeting to explain how the government had sold off the Bayswater Marina reclamation for a song. An angry throng attended.

The Devonport Flagstaff Page 19 While the fast tracking of Peninsula Capital’s proposal has not yet been approved, Watts should follow his predecessors and face the music over unpopular government legislation – it’s part of the cut and thrust of the democratic process.

Watts did find time to open Belmont Park Racquets Club’s three new courts on the same day as the protest. I did wonder if any activists would gatecrash the party and confront Watts. But even though Trish Deans, Devonport-Takapuna Local Board chair and a vocal opponent of fast-tracking, was there, nothing erupted, probably out of respect to the tennis club. Watts appeared comparatively relaxed at the event and a couple of days later was posting online videos of the opening and his part in it.

I’m generally fine with MPs opening things – its a tradition. I’m less comfortable in an election year, with Watts associating himself with a feel-good opening for a new set of courts which he had no part in developing or funding. No doubt the protesters from outside Devonport Library would be seeing red for a second time.

The courts opening was a real community event (disclosure: I am a club member) The three new courts resulted from nine years of work by club officials and wider fundraising. The whole day had a grassroots feel, full of warmth and bonhomie. This was in sharp contrast to the unpublicised and generally in-house blessing of the new courts facility on the slopes of Takarunga.

Decisions on that redevelopment were made by the Tūpuna Maunga Authority with no community input. While people seem to like the look of the project there’s been no real local skin in the game and the comparatively low-key response to the project is the result.

Block recalls butchery days of blood and sawdust More than a century ago a Northland kauri was milled into 14 huge blocks. One of them, after decades of service in a Victoria Rd butchery, is on display at Devonport Museum Walking through the Devonport Museum, many visitors stop at the huge block of wood just before the stairs leading up to our mezzanine floor. This (pictured, right) was a butcher’s block, used here in Devonport until the 1970s.

The Auckland Meat Company (AMC) was formed in 1906, and in 1916 had 14 such blocks cut from just one kauri tree by a sawmill in Whangaroa, Northland.

Each block weighed around one and a half tons. The blocks were destined to be used across AMC’s many Auckland butchery stores.

Readers of a certain age will remember visiting their local butcher right up until the 1960s and 1970s, when they could see the butcher carve up the carcasses on a block such as this, surrounded by sawdust to soak up the blood.

Changing practices and hygiene standards have generally led to their removal.

This block came from the Auckland Meat Company butcher shop on the corner of Victoria Rd and Rattray St. For a long time this shop was run by Charlie Gilbert.

AMC also had butcher shops on Vauxhall Rd and Calliope Rd. When the museum last had a makeover, shifting the block required both a steel-

wheeled trolley and a trolley car jack. We also didn’t want to mark our matai floor too much.

Former president Alastair Fletcher asked the “Golden Oldie” rugby team from the North Shore Rugby Club to surround the

block on the trolley to stop any wobbles.

The block was then walked down to its current site, still on the stand.

Closer inspection of the rings on the trunk suggest his particular piece of wood is from a tree seeded around the early 1400s.

Window on yesteryear: No supermarket, two old theatres

Reader Kim Adamson sent in this photograph in response to our stories about a picture of a bus parked in Devonport in the 1980s. “Thought this photo may be of interest as it shows the old bus depot [in the centre of the photo] and the old villas located adjacent to it. The photo would be post-1973.”

It’s a great historical shot showing a Devonport with no New World in Bartley Tce and the State Theatre (with the red roof) still standing in Victoria Rd opposite the Victoria Theatre. Much has changed, but as Devonport faces the prospect of major development, it’s interesting that the village skyline is much the same as it is today.

To quote our local councillor, Richard Hills, when discussing Plan Change 120 in the Rangitoto Observer: “We have removed the increased density south of Hauraki Corner meaning Bayswater, Belmont, Devonport and surrounding areas stick with their Unitary Plan zoning.”

Richard, why did you not include the hundreds of family homes in Hauraki that last year you supported being rezoned to 15 storeys?

You are well aware that Lake Rd is the busiest two-lane arterial in NZ and there is no room or finance even for a bus lane. Due to that one factor, the former North Shore City Council banned intensification over two storeys south of Esmonde Rd. The 2016 Unitary Plan increased those heights to three storeys.

Your quiet agreement to now doubling the current heights of these family homes to six-storey apartments and ignoring John Gillon’s well-reasoned argument opposing it, could well be linked to a fear of demotion as committee chair. After all, Mayor Wayne Brown is a high-rise advocate .

Abraham Lincoln once said, “You can fool all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.”

Plan is a lifeline: Silent supporters should speak up As a long-term Devonport resident, I am writing to express my strong support for Peninsula Capital’s “Devonport Lanes” proposal. I have no connection to the proposal other than as an observer.

For too long our village centre has suffered from declining foot traffic, empty shopfronts, and extremely poor retail and hospitality offerings. We desperately need regeneration.

This $400 million investment is the lifeline our local businesses need, bringing

economic vibrancy through 80-90 new apartments, a boutique hotel and aesthetic improvement.

The Devonport Heritage group’s claim that this project destroys our history is inaccurate. The master plan adaptively reuses and earthquake-strengthens over 2300 square metres of Victoria Rd’s heritage facades.

Furthermore, the taller buildings are thoughtfully recessed from the street, protecting our pedestrian experience while

opening up beautiful new public laneways connecting Wynyard St to Windsor Reserve.

We cannot freeze Devonport in amber until it becomes a ghost town (it is already close).

True heritage preservation means keeping a community alive, vibrant, and economically viable for future generations. I urge my fellow locals who support the redevelopment – perhaps a silent majority – to share their views publicly as well.

Why not get the community on board with proposal?

I am part of the Action Group voicing concerns to Peninsula Capital about their development.

We all know that change is hard, but not necessarily bad.

The concerns that I want to voice are practical ones – Lake Rd being at the top of the list. With more than one development taking place in or very close to Devonport in the near future, how will emergencies in Devonport and neighbouring suburbs be attended when emergency services must use a road that is clogged up 24/7, by more and more people trying to get in and out of Devonport? In addition, workers on the

development projects, and construction and earthmoving machines, will possibly be using Lake Rd for up to five years.

Is building these multiple apartments adjacent to a flood zone, really providing a good investment for apartment buyers?

What is going to attract the hordes of tourists to visit Devonport? We don’t have a lot to attract them. We are a small, quaint, quiet seaside village, much the same as others in Europe, some might even say a bit “boring” unless you love walking your dog and want a quiet life.

I was shocked to see the very lovely tree outside the postal outlet in Devonport completely chopped off at ground level and a very untidy patch of weeds left.

I am unsure whether/when a replacement tree will be put there.

There was recently a road cone on the footpath as a lone branch was drooping over the pathway.

Unplanned ‘moat’ encircles fort A new retro defence measure has been spotted at Fort Takapuna. A moat now surrounds the recessed structure. The same goes for the nearby Engine Room building, where the water inside is above ankle-deep.

Perhaps visitors should take personal flotation devices with them until the drains are cleared?

Many trees in Devonport have an air of not being cared for.

I suspect this was the case with this tree.

Recently it had a beautiful display of golden leaves. But no more.

A while ago I hit my head on a pōhutukawa branch hanging down over the footpath – I was so concerned with not tripping on the footpath, I hadn’t seen it.

Is there no one looking after the trees in Devonport?

Charity founder shares story of loss, serious illness Well-known – and easily recognised – Devonport identity Nic Russell has written a memoir about living when life doesn’t go to plan. She talked to John Harvey.

Devonport’s newest author, Nic Russell, describes herself as an adopted Devonport-arian. She says she doesn’t know how long it will take to become a full-blown local.

Most people who know the Irish-born wild swimmer with bright blue hair, who rides a blue electric bike, will dispute that analysis.

The truth is, she has become part of the Devonport landscape since she arrived in 1998. She may be different to most Devonport-arians, but that has certainly not prevented the seaside suburb accepting her as one of its own.

Russell’s story, published by Bateman, and released this month, is summed up by its title: Bollix – when life isn’t all it’s craic’d up to be. That’s the Irish spelling of Bollocks.

The title is particularly apt. Just how she has emerged emotionally and mentally intact from all that has happened in her life is a wondrous thing.

Her beloved daughter MacKenzie died in Starship Hospital at just three years old after a long illness. Kenzie’s death devastated her mother and her older brother Conor, who was five years old at the time.

But it also changed the path of Russell’s life in Aotearoa New Zealand, and particularly in Devonport.

In 2008 Russell, determined that young children should not fall through cracks in the health system, founded charity Kenzie’s Gift, to help others grapple with the impact of illness and grief.

The charity is based in Devonport, but helps people around New Zealand. It has become the vehicle through which Russell can honour her daughter’s memory, and also repay New Zealanders for all they have done to make her family feel welcome in the past 28 years in this country.

“To me Devonport means community,” she says. “I think I have always felt belonged. It has become a home away from

home. I was brought up by the sea in Ireland, and when I came here in 1998, I came to a village which even though it was part of a city was surrounded by the ocean.

and finding reasons to keep going Russell, now 53, left behind the Northern Irish coast, where the Mourne Mountains – inspiration for CS Lewis’s Narnia – sweep down to the sea. She used to swim there, and initially she went back every five years or so.

Today, the flight no longer appeals to her.

Her own health issues have dampened any enthusiasm for long-haul travel. Russell had cancer in her 30s; she now has Parkinson’s Disease, and she survived a heart transplant in her late 40s which has affected her immune system.

This makes flying potentially more hazardous. She jokes: “I don’t have the urge to go back, although that might change if I found an Irish or European publisher.

“And there is plenty to see in this beautiful land of ours.”

On leaving Ireland, Russell worked as a hospital play specialist in London. She says that helped her understand what children experience during serious illness. “I had some difficulty explaining to Conor what was happening with Kenzie, but he did have an idea. I had a wonderful psychotherapist in Birkenhead called Maxine Burgham Page.

“Max got me to the point where I could feel alive again. If it wasn’t for her, I don’t know what would have happened because when an ill child like Kenzie dies, the support services stopped.

“I was just a single mum trying to finish a degree and set myself up for the workforce.

I had a friend who was selling up the stock in her shop because she was going back to Ireland. She gave me the stock and we raised $3000. That got us started, and it became a passion project for me.

“I did a number of events to raise money for the charity and grow it, while working full time on other jobs.”

The charity has become a substantial operation, with about 40 psychotherapists and psychologists around the country and an extensive library of support kits and resources.

To date, Kenzie’s Gift has helped over 7000 families. In an average month there are 30 to 40 referrals, mostly because of the death of a parent, caregiver or sibling or a serious illness in the family.

“You know you can’t fix it, but if you can get them to a point where they can function again, they can have a future after an awful event. Sometimes young people get a real insight into what life can be like.

It doesn’t all have to be negative. I can see that in my own son. Conor is caring and compassionate.”

Russell says that writing her book has been tough, not as tough as Kenzie dying, of course, but very difficult.

“Life is invariably hard. Of course, some have it a bit easier, but it is never really easy. You shouldn’t compare your life with

“Nature goes through the book and that is something that has kept me going.”

She recalls being in hospital for her heart transplant. “The only saving grace was the fact that One Tree Hill was alongside, and you could get out every day and just walk, and because it was spring, lambs and calves had been born.

“People sort of pooh-poohed that idea of healing gardens at hospitals, but there is a lot to be said for it.”

For Russell, swimming is also a great help. “You never meet a grumpy swimmer.

Swimming is a great leveller. You are all in your togs in the water.”

She says it is an odd feeling writing such a personal book.

“It is a story of a life well lived, and I am still contributing to society.

“The book means I have gifted Conor something. We have been through all sorts of things together. He was there with me. It is his life now and I hope he has a good one.

“New Zealand has gifted me my children and so much else.”

WHAT A LIFE – PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION AT THE NAVY MUSEUM

Visit the Navy Museum’s latest exhibition - ‘What a Life’, featuring a selection of photo albums that capture moments from the history of the Royal New Zealand Navy. The albums offer a glimpse into the lives of the sailors who created them.

Covering the period from 1900 to 1972, the albums display images from very personal family moments to life at work – at sea and on shore.

The albums provide insight into moments, into memories.

However, as time passes, memories fade, and stories can be lost. We are often left with curiosity and many questions unanswered. As viewers, we become detectives, interpreting history through the photographs displayed. What information, what emotion, can be uncovered from an image or a caption?

As part of the exhibition, a rolling slideshow projects and enlarges all the images from the albums onto the wall, for visitors to enjoy. Visitors can also view images up close on an iPad and scan a QR code to access a website with all the albums.

Artists combine for an exploration of transformation The eight resident artists at Depot’s Studio D3 in Devonport are collaborating for their second exhibition in a themed series.

Printmaker Celia Walker says the group started the series because they wanted to do something different that would unify a diverse group of artists. The upcoming show, titled Alchemy, focuses on the transformation of materials.

Walker says the creative process itself involves transforming ideas into a finished result. But she adds that what’s interesting is the way the artists’ media change: the way clay transforms through firing and glazing, for example. Walker is currently working with dyes.“The indigo dye process is quite magical,” she says.

The other artists are ceramicists Fiona Mackay and Jackie Copp, painters Alison Gilmour, Steve Bolton and Dr Janet Mazenier, jeweller Rose Evans and textile artist Karen Rubado.

Each is interpreting the theme in their own way. Gilmour talks about research she’s been doing, looking back at how 16th and 17th century alchemists taught artists how to grind minerals and turn them into pigments.

Copp is interpreting alchemy through the transformation of human touch. She’s hoping people will have an emotional response to her figurative sculpture works.

The sub-theme of metallics, based on the original alchemy process of turning base elements into gold, fits well with Evans’ jewellery work, and other artists are experimenting with including metallics in their works. Mackay is adding metal fragment leftovers from jewellery making into her ceramic slips. “When it’s fired, you can get quite intense burnouts from different metals creating a really interesting effect,” she says.

Gilmour says it’s fascinating subject matter. “It’s actually quite broad, and you can apply it to lots of different parts of society or

Painter returns to textiles and garments for Depot show The term “coming full-circle” keeps coming to mind for Devonport artist Jessica Pearless as she prepares for her first solo exhibition in a decade.

Alongside Pearless’s Paintress at the Depot gallery – an exhibition of 15 garments and around 20 paintings – Takapuna Grammar School (TGS) textile students will exhibit their own works.

Pearless, a former TGS student, is collaborating with the school, and a student “parade-performance piece” will be included during the show.

Pearless received an award for fashion design when at school. “Fashion design was my other [career choice],” she says.

She hopes to speak to the TGS textile students about the potential of textiles in art and design.

Working again with textiles is a more recent development for Pearless. She studied painting at Elam art school at the University of Auckland, and her practice has predominantly been in that medium.

Her use of textiles came about through wanting to find a way to work more sustainably as an artist.

Works are created using repurposed textiles, often found at local resource centres.

She’s specific in her selections and points to a garment that includes tapestry. She aged the tapestry by leaving it outside for about a year to give it a patina. “My parents were antique dealers growing up so I’ve always had that sort of aesthetic.”

All the works in the exhibition will be for sale. The display of the garments links strongly to the compositions of the paintings, raising the question of what came first, the painting or the garment. “You could see a painting as a plan for a garment, or vice versa,” Pearless says.

She will wear one of the garments at the exhibition opening and visitors will have the opportunity to try one on as well.

Pearless is interested to see how her exhibition is received and how people respond to the garments.

She appreciates being able to work locally and the opportunity to give back to the community where she was raised and has raised her own children. “It ties in with what’s going on in the world, in terms of needing to be more sustainable in the way we work. The opportunities that Depot gives to creatives are so important”.

Company Theatre is bringing the famous French story Les Liaisons Dangereuses to The Rose Centre, with a talented costume team and impressive range of sumptuous garments to match.

The 1985 play, based on the 18th-century novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, follows aristocratic rivals Marquise de Merteuil (played by Suzy Sampson) and the Vicomte de Valmont (Michael Hallows) as they scheme and manipulate the characters around them.

Catherine Foster, a costume designer onand-off for 40 years and Devonport author who writes on topics such as property, lifestyle and architectural design, is leading the play’s costume team.

She is returning to her roots, having

trained at the London College of Fashion and had a career in the British film industry during which she costumed feature films Sid & Nancy (1986) and King Ralph (1991).

Foster has taken two up-and-coming costume designers under her wing; Torbay Theatre’s Liesl Zentgraf and Devonport-based first-time costume designer Ciara de Hora, fresh from studying fashion at Victoria University.

Costumes have been sourced from local theatres across Auckland, including Torbay Theatre, Dolphin Theatre and Titirangi Theatre. “We have some astonishing, amazing pieces,” Foster says.

The team has lost count of the number of garments they have collected over the twomonth preparation process, but it caters for at least two costume changes for each of the 10 actors – with three or more for some of the leading ladies.

Some costumes have had to be altered to fit actors, and to be taken on and off “as quickly as a lighting change” in some cases.

Zentgraf says community theatre’s limited budget means the behind-the-scenes team has to be creative. “Because we are borrowing items, you can’t just cut something up to alter it, we have to mend and improve.”

Several of the pieces were sourced from the play’s lead actress, Belmont’s Suzy Sampson. She is a Company Theatre committee member and was a director with the group, winning Outstanding Direction at the Northern Area Performance Theatre Awards for helming last year’s sold-out show The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

“Now I’m back to acting,” she says.

the Marquise de Merteuil, who was memorably played by Glenn Close in the 1988 film of the tale. “She has some of the best lines in the play, she’s acerbic and incredibly intelligent.”

During her directing days, she decided to costume her cast of Shakespeare’s As You Like It in a French aristocratic style, and many of these pieces are now part of the upcoming local play. “It might have been deep in the back of my mind, the thought that

I would love to wear these costumes for Les Liaisons Dangereuses one day.”

Other locals involved in the play include Rebecca Wright as Madame de Volange, Richard Jones as the Major Domo, along with production and stage manager Vettinia Ross and assistant director Rhema Sutherland.

Colin Swager never imagined that his wooden beach chairs would lead to him meeting and working with a former poet laureate and an award-winning ceramic artist.

A few years ago, Swager began making the wooden chairs that many Devonport locals will have seen on Duders Beach.

He was initially inspired by his neighbour, Geoff, the original beach chair-maker, but has now mostly taken over the role.

Unbeknown to Swager, the chairs were a source of intrigue for poet Michele Leggott and artist Virginia Leonard, who were independently inspired by them in their work.

Although they are almost neighbours, none had met each other before Leggott and Leonard were asked by the librarian and curator of Takapuna Library’s Angela Morton Room, Pippa Mothersole, to become involved in an art exhibition – Where We Meet.

Both Leggott and Leonard jumped at the opportunity to be involved in the group show of four artist-and-poet pairings, which opens on 23 August (2-4pm) in the Morton Room.

At their first meeting, they sat down with Mothersole to agree on the topic of their

works for the exhibition.

It didn’t take long for them to decide on the chairs.

Leonard told Leggott about a photo she took, of a swimmer using the chairs whose look caught her eye. Leggott says their collaboration stems from that.

Leonard tracked down Swager relatively quickly and in an uncanny twist, it turned out the swimmer lived near Swager and went to the same high school as Leggott.

The chairs have their own stories, for instance, one floated out to sea and someone swam out to it and climbed aboard for a ride.

Leggott has written a poem about another chair story shared with her by a family member.

Titled “Hot Air”, it will be published in an upcoming collection of Leggott’s poetry, though she shares it here, in advance, with the Flagstaff.

Swager’s involvement in Where We Meet, which he credits to his wife Terri, goes beyond the beach chairs.

He’s made two wooden plinths, styled to give a nod to the chairs, to support Leonard’s and Leggott’s works – a sculpture by Leonard, who works with ceramic and casting resin, and a four-part poem by Leggott.
