$100K probe into new Kennedy Park stairs approved A new set of steps from Castor Bay’s Kennedy Park to the coast will be investigated. And the old closed stairway, damaged by storms in 2019 and 2024, will remain for now despite Auckland Council officers wanting to demolish them as they are unsafe.

The public was “jumping the fence” and using the steps to get to the beach, council’s Kennedy Park project manager Mohammed Sarwar told the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board at its May meeting. However the board voted to keep the stairway during a $100,000 investigation

into new steps. An alternative location might be more expensive than repairing the damaged steps, said board member Terence Harpur. It was important to “keep our options open”. As part of the investigation, officers will To page 2
