AWORLD HERITAGE SITE isn’t created overnight. For 10,000 years it has been rising steadily up out of the sea, from where the weight of the inland ice had pressed it deep down under the waves. Skerries became islets, became islands, became mountains, became high mountains. In the beginning, the land lift was fast but it has slowed down over the millennia. Today, the rate of rebound is only 0.9 cm per year – but it’s still the fastest in the world!
For a very long time, the area whose coast was becoming increasingly steep had no name. It wasn’t until the late 1800s that geologists starting taking an interest in the unique conditions caused by the land uplift. But the steep coastal stretch between the mouth of the Ångermanälven river in the south and Skagsudde Lighthouse in the north was simply referred to as the Steep Ångermanland Coast for the larger part of the 20th century. Because that is what it was. Steep. And in Ångermanland. But then things started moving fast. The name Höga Kusten – the High Coast – was coined in the early 1970s. Skuleskogen became a national park in 1984 and in 2000 the High Coast was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, it is the only purely natural World Heritage Site in Sweden.
THE LAND UPLIFT , the most dramatic in the world, totals close to 300 metres since the last ice age. The official World Heritage Site includes the coastal landscape between the bridge Högakustenbron in the south and Örnsköldsvik in the north, but the land uplift’s fantastic and often strange effects on the landscape can be seen over a much larger area.

The trail of trails
THE 140-KILOMETER-LONG Höga Kusten Trail is a classic route that stretches through the entire World Heritage site of the same name, from Hornöberget in the south to Örnsköldsvik in the north.
Now over 50 years old, the Höga Kusten Trail has become a well-trodden path. Perhaps it is now one of Sweden’s most famous hiking trails—a coastal route that truly rivals the world’s finest. An icon in its own right, it has been honored as one of Sweden’s 12 signature trails. And rightfully so—along the Höga Kusten Trail, you’ll find everything from breathtaking viewpoints to refreshing swimming spots. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced hiker, there are sections suited to you.
It’s easy to see why this coastal stretch attracts countless hikers every year. If you venture out in July, you’ll notice you’re not alone—but in this vast landscape, it never feels crowded.

Sweden has something that is totally unique. The Swedish countryside is open to everyone, and as a tourist you can roam and visit almost anywhere. So take your chance and find a beautiful picnic spot – there are so many to choose from.
Everyone’s right to nature
ALLEMANSRÄTTEN - The Right of Public Access, is an ancient custom that is written in the Swedish Constitution. Many Swedes think of it as part of their cultural heritage and a national symbol for Sweden. In short, it gives everyone the right to roam in nature, pitch a tent, light a campfire and pick berries and mushrooms.
You can walk on private roads, as long as you respect private residences by keeping away from houses and gardens. Take care of the surfaces you walk on, big boots can leave big footprints in soft ground. Can you believe that you are allowed to pitch your tent on private land? But if you want to stay more than a night or two you need to ask the landowner for permission, and always pitch your tent well away from any residential houses.
The Right of Public Access gives you the opportunity to stay for longer and enjoy our nature in peace and quiet. You can pick flowers, berries and mushrooms, but be sure not to pick any protected species.
THE HIGH COAST has countless fantastic picnic areas where you can prepare your meal over an open fire. Sand and gravel are good surfaces to light a fire on. Why not barbeque with a view? Make your way up to one of the High Coast’s many fan tastic viewpoints and cook your dinner outdoors. Uvberget in Härnösand, Kulberget and Fäberget in Kramfors and Fjälludden in Örnsköldsvik are per fect for this. Visiting Skuleskogen National Park is a must when you are in the High Coast region. But once you are in the national park, the right of pub lic access is somewhat restricted and you have to follow park rules and regulations. There are spe cific places for you to barbeque, and animals are
not welcome in all parts of the park where they can disturb wildlife. Make sure you are aware of all the rules and regulations before you visit the park. naturvardverket.se has all the information you need in Swedish, English and German.
KEEP FOLLOWING IN MIND
• Do not walk over cropland or land that is easily disturbed.
• If you are visiting forested areas, be careful not to tread on seedlings
• If you are walking on private roads, please respect boundaries to people’s homes and gardens.
• Make sure you are aware of fire restrictions.
• If you are lighting a campfire, do not break off branches from any living trees or bushes. Ensure it is fully extinguished before you leave.
• In Skuleskogen National Park, make sure you are aware of the rules and regulations that apply there.

Absolutely Höga Kustens’ foremost and worldrenowned delicacy is not something you secretly eat. A revealing aroma and which should be enjoyed with pride in festive shimmer.
The annual Höga Kusten highlight leaves no one untouched. The third Thursday in August, is the date on every calendar in Höga Kusten that is as feared as it is looked forward to. This is when the annual fermented Baltic herring premier takes place. And where should all the world’s foodies and rapt fans of fermented herring head to if they want to experience “the real deal” – well it’s simple – they should hightail it directly to the island of Ulvön. This is where the locals take their signature dish very seriously. In spite of the odor.

Award-winning Hernö Gin and High Coast Whisky have been presented as producers of inter-nationally renowned products that are as far away from typical beverages in Sweden, northern Sweden and Ångermanland as you can get. The fact is that Höga Kustens´ most successful ambassadors out in the world in recent years have been gin and whisky.
But as history concerns, baking is one of our oldest trades. A family-owned company in Ullånger that has been baking flatbread for 97 years, making it Sweden’s oldest flatbread bakery. Today the company is run by the third generation of Ullstens, with all of its products still based on the original recipe. Today Mjälloms Tunnbröd isn’t only a Swedish classic, it is also a delicacy that we are very proud of here in Höga Kusten.
And don’t miss out on Höga Kustens’ official regional dish. It’s a three course dinner starting with smoked whitefish, an elk fillet roasted with hay as the main course and an icecream made on getmese with cloudberrys. Enjoy.

WHEN IN Höga Kusten don´t miss out some of our unique crafts. 60 years on, Åke Nordin won him a global cult status with outdoor equipment company Fjällräven. A
true pioneer in the outdoor industry whose company continues to release new products in inspiration from their classic Kånken which today is more popular then ever.
Docksta Sko has even more history – they have been hand-making shoes for 100 years. These handmade slippers are a fashionable and unique must for your feet, working in collaboration with several artist in their making. A new store at the foot of Mount Skuleberget is an attraction.
And you should definetely make a visit to the world renowed nordic influencer Jonna Jinton´s new store i Sollefteå where you can experience her artwork, such as photographs, paintings and handmade jewelry. A place for her millions of followers to see her work in real life.
Looking for a really great adrenaline rush? Don’t miss the completely newly built high-altitude courses in the adventure park Activator Park a few kilometers outside Örnsköldsvik or the Via Ferrata climing on the face of Mount Skuleberget.
VIA FERRATA is a scenic climb, for both beginners and really experienced climbers, as you have four different paths to choose from. But they all ends at the top of iconic Mount Skuleberget. Everything you need is provided.
At Activator Park you´ll find an exciting family activity with several different paths. All have several obstacles and ziplines and the higher they are, the trickier and more nervous will it be. It’s just a matter of choosing the right course and challenge.

The High Coast’s characteristic nature was formed by world-unique land uplift. The area is currently 800 metres higher than it was during the most recent ice age. Traces of this incredibly rapid uplift can be seen in many locations throughout the region. The destination Höga Kusten consists of the four municipalities Örnsköldsvik, Kramfors, Sollefteå and Härnösand.

Högakustenbron, The bridge with a total length of 1,867 metres, was opened in December 1997. The suspension bridge is one of Sweden’s highest constructions – it is suspended all of 182 metres above the river below it.

With an average output of 500 cubic metres of water per second at its mouth, the Ångermanälven River is one of Sweden’s highest-volume rivers. The river stretches through the entire High Coast region with its source far, far inland.
Mjältön, Sweden’s highest island, has its highest peak 236 metres above sea level. It can be found in the heart of the Archipelago. Read more about it on page 26.

WWHY NOT START by experiencing the iconic bridge Höga Kustenbron, the crown jewel of many beautiful bridges in the High Coast region. Visit it in the evening and admire its lighting as night falls.
Continue north to FriluftsByn – the Outdoor Village. It is located in the absolute heart of the High Coast, at the foot of Skuleberget right by Skule skogen National Park. Their visitor centre will give you the best ideas on how to spend your time in the High Coast World Heritage Site and help you tailor make your visit, ensuring it is world class.
Do you want to know a little about the industrial history of Ångermanland? Visit Docksta Sko It is the oldest shoe factory in the country and it uses the same production methods now as it did in 1923 when the company was founded.
Mannaminne is a fantastic, colourful work of art that defies description. Follow artist and collector Anders Åberg’s footsteps and see works of art, museum exhibits, interesting buildings, cars and boats from all corners of the globe. There is no other place like it in Sweden and a visit to the High Coast would not be complete without going to this magical art centre. When in the area you also need to visit two of our most scenic fishing villages Norrfällsviken and Bönhamn. Absolutely a gem of charming places. And finish with meeting the sun set at the top of Utsikt Höga Kusten, accesible by car and with a beautiful story of its origin.

Högbonden
LIVING THE LIGHTKEEPER´S LIFE
Högbonden is one of Höga Kusten’s most unique places. You can stay here in the beautifully renovated lightkeeper’s house and spend the day on this beautiful island, take a rest in the garden, visit the local museum and eat well, all while enjoying the breathtaking view over the Baltic Sea’s crashing waves.
Högbonden is located out at sea between Härnösand and Örnsköldsvik and can be reached by boat from Barsta or Bönhamn in Nordingrå. It is home to dramatic and barren nature, winding walking trails and has a rich cultural history to discover. In 2021, Högbonden reopened its totally renovated lightkeeper’s house after putting in a lot of work to recreate the house’s original character.
Grisslan
ENJOY THE PRETTY RED FISHING HUTS
Steep cliffs, an open barren landscape and pretty red fishing huts all give Grisslan its special character. The two islands of Vågön and Grisselön, linked by a walking bridge over a canal, together make up Grisslan.
Vågön is three kilometres by one kilometre with its highest point 55 metres above sea level. Grisslan was first named as a fishing settlement in 1780. Picturesque little houses line both sides of the sound. Closest to the water are the boat sheds with jetties and further up, the village streets are lined with fences or houses.
1953 was the last year that anyone lived on Grisslan over the winter. Today, 24 families live on the island during the summer months. The majority of houses here have been owned by the same families for generations.
Mjältön
EXPERIENCE THE AMAZING NATURE, 223 METERS ABOVE THE SEA
Despite its exciting history, the island of Mjältön has led an uneventful life in modern times, positioned quietly between two popular tourist destinations – Ulvön and Skuleskogen. However, things could be slowly changing as more and more people discover the amazing nature of the island that rises high from the water to 236 metres above sea level, being Sweden’s highest island, Mjältön is a popular destination. People love to climb to its highest point up on Bastutoberget, and place a stone at the top in an attempt to make it even higher.
Ulvön
HOME TO FERMENTED BALTIC HERRING
Ulvön, which is really two islands, is perhaps best known for fermented Baltic herring that has been commercially produced here for over one hundred years. The northern island – the main one – is probably the most popular and frequently visited island in the Höga Kusten archipelago.
This beautiful place has restaurants, hotels, hostels, cottages for rent, shops and a number of beautiful old buildings, including a little fishing chapel dating back to the 1600s. Ulvön is Höga Kusten’s answer to Tylösand on Sweden’s west coast and during the summer it becomes a hive of activity, tourists and visitors.
Trysunda
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ISLAND IN SWEDEN
Trysunda has been named Sweden’s most beautiful island. It is dotted with small pretty fishing huts, swimming bays, sandy beaches and viewpoints. The island was founded in 1557 and is said to be the best-preserved fishing community in all of Ångermanland. In 1987, Trysunda and its surrounding islands became a nature reserve. Take a walk around the beautiful coast and admire the multi-coloured stony beaches. The red Nordingrå granite is 1,580 million years old. There are a few things you can’t miss when visiting Sweden’s most beautiful island and Björnviken is one of them – it will remind you of the perfect white sandy beaches of the Greek island of Rhodes.
Strängöarna
Strängöarna are two idyllic islands with a long tradition of fishing and timber milling, summer fun and recreation. But it is the timber-milling era that has influenced the island the most. This was the location of Örnsköldsvik’s first steam saw in 1863. The islands are only about two minutes by boat from the mainland, so it is easy to get here. They offer lovely walking trails, a viewpoint and also relics left behind from saw milling times. The eastern of the two islands has a popular swimming beach, beautiful rocks and a lovely camping site.

The only way is up
It is one of the High Coast’s most well known landmarks – the mountain that has risen out of the sea. Its silhouette has become the World Heritage Site’s signature. Skuleberget. Written about, talked about, climbed by many. And now with a new chairlift – an investment in the future – that is replacing its successor that dated back to the 1960s.

ONE OF THE High Coast’s best and most dramatic views can be found at the top of Skuleberget, a wellknown mountain with its characteristic profile that has long been a nature reserve. It is also an easily reached destination with a new fully accessible chairlift up to the top, with hiking trails and a restaurant. On a clear day, the view stretches for miles out over the archipelago and surrounding undulating landscape.
Skuleberget has fascinated and inspired people for generations. There has been talk about pirates on Skuleberget for centuries – books and plays have even been written about them. In 1967, Skuleberget became a nature reserve and the world’s highest coastline, at 286 metres above sea level, has been measured near its peak.
DON’T MISS the best lift in the High Coast. A famous mountain welcomes you up to its peak. Just as it has for decades, but now absolutely everyone is welcome.

YOU CAN FIND our many seaside beaches along the entire coastline. Join us for three of our most popular spots would this summer.
BJÖRNVIKEN - You won’t get any closer to paradise at this latitude. Björnviken on the island of Trysunda is the Bondi Beach of the High Coast. Perfect for families and groups of friends with a boat. Easily accessible via the shallow sandy beach. Just point the boat in towards land. If you don’t have your own boat, you can use the public ferry system
– M/F Ulvön will get you here from Köpmanholmen.
SMITINGEN - One of the absolutely best and ancient beaches in northern Sweden. Beach volleyball, a kiosk and a great atmosphere. Perfect for those who don’t like sand and cold water. The water temperature can be really warm in the summer, so make the trip there to try it out. Take your car 10-15 minutes along the roads Gånsviksvägen/ Sandvägen from Härnösand.
SALUSAND - The northernmost sea beach on the High Coast. Only a stone’s throw from the E4 highway, just north of Husum. A delightful sandy beach and probably Sweden’s northernmost surfer’s paradise in the spring and autumn. And don´t miss out the completely newly built restaurant.
Rotsidan - a nature reserve and an amazing kilometre-long slickrock beach
...or just a little less sand
ROTSIDAN is a fantastic, kilometre-long slickrock beach that just has to be experienced. Perfect for sun worshippers and photographers. Turn right in Nordingrå towards Barsta/Bönhamn and keep a lookout for the signpost marking a small forestry road. Follow it for several kilometres until you get to a car park. From there, you can easily walk to the water even with prams and wheelchairs.
Or if you rather prefer heated pools to lakes and the seaside, there are plenty of outdoor pools to choose between in Höga Kusten. Ramsele camping has a large pool beautifully positioned below the impressive riverbanks. Risöbadet in Sollefteå has a paddling pool and two large pools where you can swim with your friends. A creative architecture festival and nine architecturally designed wind shelters located in different locations in the world heritage site. Arknat was recently awarded with an architecture and design prize at the swedish design awards by rum in the category architecture of the year.

This was the idea behind Arknat, the Scandinavian Architectural Festival. It was held in the High Coast for the first time over several exciting weeks a couple of years ago .
The work resulted in nine structures being built. Why not spend a whole day visiting all nine wind shelters? You are guaranteed a fantastic day that will stimulate all of your senses. that the High Coast is often a subject of interest in the world’s media. And when we are mentioned because of our sustainability work, we are even prouder.
When the renowned American newspaper the New York Times published an article listing 52 sustainable international travel destinations, the High Coast made the list. The list identified places where you can still find genuine places to visit and travel sustainably. With great joy we humbly read their reasoning for the High Coast to be included: “A natural refuge on the wild High Coast offers travelers a greener alternative”.
The article wrote about one of our local sustainable tourism projects – Arknat with its architecturally designed wind shelters that attract visitors who appreciate spending time out in nature. This is one of several investments made in the High Coast to bring attention to natural places of great beauty.

Swedish fika. You won’t have to spend much time in Sweden before you come across the concept “fika”. Swedes love to fika – and drink nine (!) kilos of coffee per person each year. And they love a bit of baking with their coffee – the combination of the two makes up the concept of “fika”. A typical cake in Sweden is the Princess Cake, look for the large round green cake in every bakery you pass. But don’t be surprised if you meet someone for a “fika” and there is no coffee or cake involved, “fika” can also mean just spending time together. Check out the hashtag #swedishfika on instagram to get a feel for the phenomenon.
Prepare yourself for impressive nature, light nights and a friendly atmosphere, and learn how to ‘fika’. When you’re planning a visit to sweden, it might be a good idea to learn a bit about the country and its people before you leave home.

Swedes love outdoor life and nature and when you meet them in the forest or on the trail, expect them to be friendly but reserved. There’s nothing wrong with small talk, it’s just that Swedes are no good at it. Swedes can be helpful, but not particularly forthcoming. In central and northern Sweden summer nights are long and light. The locals here are known to be both calm, trustworthy and a little shy. They love spending time together around an open campfire – grilling sausages is a typical Swedish pastime which is carried out all year round. This can also be done indoors; many Swedes have open fireplaces inside their homes.
SWEDES ARE KNOWN for their innovative design, fashion and music. Most of them love to watch “mello”, the competition that determines who will represent Sweden in the European Song Contest. This is treated more or less as a festival for the entire month of February. We are very proud of our world-famous music artists such as Abba, Avicii, Roxette, Europe and Björn Skifs. A less well-known artist is Tomas Ledin, a singer with roots in the High Coast and songs about the World Heritage Site. Swedes love their holidays and festivals.
Celebrating Lucia in December is important – the season needs light, joy, goodness and music. Midsummer represents the start of summer and is celebrated with a traditional smorgasbord where pickled herring plays a central role. Take the opportunity to dance around the Maypole, it is a key feature of Swedish culture. Some Swedes like to dress up in traditional folk costumes that are the same colour as the Swedish flag.
Learn the word “hen” which means both he and she. That “hen” has become fully accepted says a lot about Sweden being one of the most gender-equal countries in the world. Swedes are proud of how far they have come on this front, and many men and women try hard to share the responsibilities of home. Swedish dads are among the best in the world for taking paternity leave.
SWEDES LIKE THE ENVIRONMENT , sustainability and recycling. They sort their recyclables and hate throwing food away. Shopping for second-hand clothes and furniture is seen as modern and positive. In the summer, thousands of flea markets are held and this is seen by Swedes as a bit of a national symbol. As a tourist in the High Coast, you will have many chances to find a treasure or two among someone else’s off-casts. Dare to test fermented Baltic herring! It is northern Sweden’s national dish and really is delicious if it is served with the right accompaniments. Don’t let the smell put you off, it tastes great!
THE SPOT CHALLENGE
If Swedes have nothing to talk about, they’ll talk about the weather. And nothing can get in the way of their traditions. Such as the “Crayfish Premier” in August where they sing songs and feast on crayfish whilst wearing colourful hats and drinking schnapps. Become an expert in all that is typically Swedish! Look out for these elements and brag about your knowledge of Swedish lifestyle and culture.
AS THE LEAVES change color and the air turns crisp, Höga Kusten comes alive in a whole new way. Autumn here is a vibrant season, perfect for enjoying scenic hikes, berry picking , or perhaps mushroom picking, as our forests are rich with goodies this time of year. Even better in combination with canoeing that is available along several rivers with plenty of rest stops and the option to stay overnight in riverside cabins. Equipment can be rented from various local providers. And if canoeing isn’t your thing, you can rent a raft on the river Ångermanälven for a more adventurous journey downstream. And don’t miss the extended golf season or all our fishing along rivers, in lakes, or out at sea which is among the best in the country and attracts a lot of visitors to Höga Kusten during September and October. Autumn in Höga Kusten is beatiful and food for the soul.
In the High Coast, you will find a diverse and scenic fishing landscape. Well over a thousand lakes and miles and miles of rivers and streams await you here. Perch and pike are the most common species in these waters. In fact, this stretch of coastline is world-renowned specifically for its exceptional pike fishing.
Winter
WHEN SNOW settles like a sparkling blanket over Höga Kusten, a sense of calm arrives that simply must be experienced. A winter world of much adventure and relaxation awaits. Most people strap on their cross-country skis and glide through frosty forests on well-maintained trails – whether for fitness or more off-trail touring. Also snowshoe hiking is becoming increasingly popular, especially up toward Skuleberget, where the winter scenery becomes truly magical. You’ll also find frozen lakes perfect for long-distance ice skating, often available with a guide, or why not venture deep into the wilderness on a dog sledding tour? And when evening falls? Look up – the northern lights often dance across the dark sky here, magical and unforgettable. Winter in Höga Kusten is both peaceful and grand – a quiet adventure that stays with you.
During the winter months, darkness arrives early, bringing breathtaking opportunities for starlit nights and the magnificent display of the Northern Lights dancing across our skies. It is a tranquil season to simply embrace the outdoor silence and experience the landscape bathed in moonlight.

It is easy to take beautiful scenery for granted when you are constantly surrounded by it. It is also easy to take our untouched nature and recuperation for granted. As more and more people have become aware of the unique aspects of our World Heritage Site, our pride in it has grown – as has our need for sustainable ideas and a change in our way of living. Our destination’s stakeholders are now banding together to work on fulfilling both our own and global sustainability goals.
This is a project that has been written about in the New York Times where the High Coast has been named as one of the world’s 52 Places for a Changed World.
