NIELS AAN HET WOORD Vaak is de prik er wel wat uit, zo vlak voor de vakantie. Tentamens, projecten en eindassessments vliegen je om de oren, je lichaam kan niet zonder koffie en natuurlijk begint de printer op de dag van de waarheid te steigeren. Je bent toe aan vakantie. Lekker opladen en er daarna weer volle bak tegenaan. Dit jaar is het natuurlijk anders, vanwege ‘de’ situatie.

Daarom verlangen wij nu met z’n allen naar een zomer met prik. Spuit in je arm en koude consumptie in de hand! Het leven wordt weer mooi. Wat zijn jouw vakantieplannen? Er komt natuurlijk een moment dat de studie klaar is en dan heb je de keuze om door te studeren of het werkleven in te duiken. Wij interviewden Mark. Hij was voorheen student in onze mooie stad en is inmiddels een paar jaar afgestudeerd.

Vlieguren maken en er varing opdoen bij versc hillende afdelingen?

Dat kan bij het STW Het is gelukt! Je hebt je hbo- of mbo-verpleegkundige opleiding in the pocket.

Je wilt dolgraag aan de slag. Maar waar begin je en welke keuzes maak je?

Sytze Mark, afgestudeerd in januari 2021 als hbo-verpleegkundige ging aan de slag als STW-verpleegkundige in Medisch Centrum Leeuwarden (MCL). Sytze Mark: “Door het STW (Stichting Tijdelijk Werk) kan ik vlieguren maken en de ervaring opdoen die ik nodig heb om mijn uiteindelijke doel te bereiken: Intensive Care-verpleegkundige worden.”

Het STW is het flexbureau van het MCL. Bij het STW kun je terecht als je ervaring op wilt doen en/of flexibel (op afroepbasis) wilt werken. Het STW is een vliegende start van het MCL, Sytze Mark vertelt: “Gedurende mijn opleiding heb ik stages gelopen in een verzorgingstehuis en bij de thuiszorg.

Mijn laatste stages liep ik in het MCL. Dat ik hier wilde werken was voor mij al snel duidelijk.

Het dynamische van de zorg, het snelle verloop van de patiënten die je relatief kort ziet en waarmee je intensief contact hebt en het continu schakelen vind ik erg interessant.

Het maakt het werken nooit saai. Maar ook dat het MCL één van de grotere ziekenhuizen van de regio is. Een ziekenhuis waar veel interessante casuïstieken plaatsvinden.

Dat is wat mij trok en dat ik dacht: daar wil ik werken!”

Na het behalen van zijn diploma solliciteerde Sytze Mark direct bij het STW. Een gesprek volgde en Sytze Mark werd aangenomen, direct met een vast contract voor 32-uur.

Sytze Mark: “Met dat vaste contract ben ik erg blij, dat geef toch een stukje zekerheid en vertrouwen. Nadat ik werd aangenomen kreeg ik een app tot mijn beschikking waar diensten in werden opengezet waar ik mij op kan inschrijven. Ik doe zo ontzettend veel ervaring op en kom letterlijk overal in het ziekenhuis.”

Alleen het nieuw binnenkomen op een nieuwe afdeling is in het begin altijd spannend.

Sytze Mark: “Ik heb bij mijn stagebegeleider destijds aangegeven dat ik dat best spannend vond en er wel eens moeite mee had. Ze hebben mij hierbij geholpen. Ik geleerd dat je gewoon je mond open moet trekken en durf dat nu ook. Daarnaast weet ik nu ook dat er op elke afdeling een ervaren verpleegkundige is waar je op terug kunt vallen als je er niet uit komt. Hierdoor krijg je steeds meer vertrouwen. Daarnaast ontdek ik zo wat ik leuk vind en hoe ik mijn verdere loopbaancarrière wil inrichten.”

“De sfeer in het ziekenhuis is prettig, ik voel mij thuis”, aldus Sytze Mark. “Als ik nu stagiaires op een afdeling zie of STW’ers waarvan ik weet dat zij net begonnen zijn, dan sta ik even extra bij hen stil en vraag ik of alles lukt. We doen het uiteindelijk allemaal samen.”

AN INTERNALIZED PANOPTICON OF AUTONOMY

MICRO DOSING

For a while now, the term micro-dosing has become more and more of a hot topic. Western medicine is slowly being overshadowed by alternative ways in which to ease, or aid, in curing multiple illnesses or anxieties. California has recently approved a bill to legalize the possession of psychedelic drugs such as LSD and psilocybin, which can be found in magic mushrooms. The world of gaining perception is expanding.

Micro-dosing is considered to be a technique for studying the behavior of consuming crumb sized amounts of drugs for an extended period of time in order to test or discover its benefits regarding the physiological and psychological self. Yes, I have explored the world of psilocybin and LSD, which of course can be derived from every Beatles song during the late 60s early 70s.

It’s safe to say a full psychedelic trip every once in a while, is enough to open old wounds, indulge in natures beauties and laugh continuously for 8 hours

over a piece of cheese, but every individual is so incredibly different. The effects may uniquely vary per being.

BE AWARE Instead of going all in and not being able to function in society, I decided to hop on the band wagon and give micro-dosing a try for one week. Because of the experiences I have had with hallucinogenic drugs my awareness of the pros and cons is conscious at all times. No one new to psychedelics should indulge in such things without

having a responsible guide present or at very least reading medical journals and articles on the topic. The last thing anyone needs is someone consuming irresponsibly and causing more damage than trying to heal.

The purpose of my research into the world of micro-dosing is to discover the benefits or weaknesses it will bring to my body and mind. When doing such research, one needs to understand the responsibility that comes with it. Its’ not a game, it’s the journey beyond yourself.

A SENSE OF CONTROL During day one of my journey, anxious feelings began to arise.

I had made a rule for myself, tell no one. This probably ignited a fear of loneliness. My plan was to go about my life as “normal”.

So, I did. If I am being completely honest, a little too much was ingested on the first day, but why not start with a bang? The biggest difference I noticed throughout my day was an incredible sense of control and calmness. No matter what situation I found myself in, and there two massive encounters I experienced that day, an impression of rationality was consuming my thoughts.

My main question to myself was “How can I remove my emotions and focus on the reality of my circumstance?”

DAY TWO THROUGH FIVE Moving through day two to five was less extreme when compared to my initial intake. My purpose felt as though I was micro-dosing to enhance my life, not escape from it. My productivity was extremely high, and my creative energy was flowing. It felt as though I was completing double of my daily tasks with the same amount of high energy. My focus on my preconceived goals was strong. The only difference that those around me noticed was my overly happy, high energy.

The last two days of my microdosing dance were still and refreshing. I took the time to read, practice yoga and meditate.

I felt that I was not forcing myself to achieve these tasks but rather naturally wanting to do them for my body and mind without any effort. Those moments of stillness allowed me to appreciate my life and those that have been a part of the process.

INTERNAL PANOPTICON My micro-dosing experience brought forward a thought that I learned in a recent psychology class.

Egocentric positive thinking can easily lead us to an unrealistic state of complacent comfort. I was reversed back towards to myself and my

purpose throughout my week of micro-dosing. We can often fall trap to the world’s chaos but need to remind ourselves of the internalized panopticon we require in order to have control on our thoughts, actions and feelings.

PERSPECTIVES MATTER When I initially began my experiment and writing this article my feelings were more on the lines of excited, but after my experiment and communicating with others about my experience a sad reality began to set in. I knew some people would not find it interesting or worthwhile.

The thoughts and perspectives of others hit hard. We are all so different, physically and mentally. What may work for the one may never work for the other. I can spend all my time talking about the benefits of micro-dosing until I am blue in the face, but at whose fault is it when someone takes it too far? We have to be so incredibly careful when consuming any drug. This including alcohol, tobacco, prescribed medications and caffeine.

My biggest take away is that I am, and forever will be, in control of my own thoughts, my own actions and my own feelings, as are you of yours.

INTERNATIONALS OF LEEUWARDEN COLUMN Tekst: Jody Simone

NOT GAY ENOUGH For most of my life the majority of people I considered friends were of the male species of human. I generally found that boys were easier to be friends with. They were simple and didn’t care what I was wearing. I played nearly every kind of sport as a kid and in 7th grade protested to form a girl’s football team because I wasn’t allowed to play with the boys. I received sports woman of the year before moving onto high school after which still thriving as the son my father never had. Saturdays were for rugby matches and “The Boys”, all of which I was present for in my teen years. Even after blossoming into a young woman and moving in the world as my own entity, did I find boys generally easier to be around. It was only after getting my heart broken multiple times, did I come to realize that they (boys) are still simple and still don’t care what I wear, as long as I open my legs and not my heart. But that’s a story for another column. Fast forward to my 26th year around the sun my connection to men seemed to deepen in another fashion, liking the same sexual partners. Was my interest in woman due to the multiple heartbreaks caused by boys throughout my years? If not, then my childhood of tomboyish behaviors would make sense. Now that my close male friends are aware that I am indeed attracted to the same sex as they are, a strange energy has erupted. The other day a friend had invited me round to watch a football match. Cool, chilling with the boys as usual.

About an hour before I am meant to head off, he calls and ashamedly mentions that maybe it’s better that I don’t come. He says something about a superstition or other and I immediately know why the hesitation.

I am, at the end of the day, a woman. I still don’t know the full story, but it got me thinking. Even your homies fall trap to the sexist traditions and behaviors that have been ingrained in us for thousands of years.

It all seems dandy and gay enough when commenting on other women’s body parts to me or asking, “Who’s the dude in your relationship?” There is no dude, that’s the point. But I am not gay enough to watch a football match with people I consider my friends because of a superstition? Wow. I have also come to realize that I have engaged in this behavior because I too have not known how to deal with or process some of the information that comes out of people’s mouths. Just because I am now having sex with woman does not justify me or other people engaging in derogatory thought or behavior. Both male and female are sexy, beautiful and eclectic in their own dimensions and sexist superstitions need some deep throated re-evaluation.

I think childhood is a very determining and sensitive moment in life, some psychologists say it’s the moments that decide how everything later would go on. At times it was very hectic and lonesome, having split parents along with depression wasn’t easy. I don’t blame them, but it is something I still find myself struggling with to this day.

Although struggling with these feelings, having meals with my family, caretaker and friends while growing up was always my favorite. Usually, it was very spontaneous. Every night was someone different at the house to share a meal.

To see so many people I love being carefree with each other enjoying a beautiful meal together on an average day, felt like the utmost privilege.

The most influential person in my life right now is myself in 10 years. I have a vision as to where I want to be. All the decisions I am making at this moment in time is me trying to achieve that.

Würzburg, Germany Student in Leeuwarden, Friesland I am always trying to take something away from every situation, even from of my sad moments. You just cannot be constantly happy. But that’s also the beautiful side of being human. Being sad makes me feel alive. It’s the affirmation that I am still just a human being. It took me a while to learn to accept being sad sometimes and how to appreciate that.

The saddest chapter of my life was probably the time when I isolated myself from the outside world by playing video games all day after school. This was when I was around 17 years old. Of course, the death of close friends or family or heartbreak makes me incredibly sad as well. It’s a scary thought to me to never see family and friends ever again.

While I was 17, I was completely missing out on confronting real life problems by avoiding or just swallowing them. But it is just part of life to confront your arising problems. That’s how you grow and learn the most, in my opinion. So, that’s a place I don’t want to go back to. I noticed I just cannot find my balance with video games and it doesn’t fulfill my life. It took way too long for me to realize that.

Growing up in the North of Scotland, life at home is a complete contrast to the Netherlands. The comfort, beauty and lifestyle are enough for many to never leave. However, as a child my family and I would visit The Netherlands regularly and from a young age this sparked an appetite a life outside the Highlands. As I began to grow older, so did my ambitions and the dream of studying in the Netherlands blossomed in my head. However, so did my frustrations and restlessness of my life in Scotland. After just leaving school, I was working a job with no joy or gain and my internal frustration was eating away at me, I struggled to find happiness in that moment in my life. During my time here I have been lucky enough to meet and learn from the most extraordinary individuals from all different walks of life. Whether it be creatively, opposing views, different mindsets I have been blessed to encounter so many unique characters across my chapter in Leeuwarden.

From different cultures, backgrounds, race and religion the internationals of Leeuwarden have all had an impact on me. The beautiful mix of people you encounter in this small northern city is quite remarkable and something I never expected to find.

AFGESTUDEERDE MARK VAN DER MEULEN: “ALLES IS MOGELIJK, OOK AL LIJKT HET NIET TE PASSEN BINNEN JE STUDIE.” Mark van der Meulen (27) ging op zijn zestiende al op zichzelf wonen in Leeuwarden. Als Amelander had hij geen keus. Hij rondde in Drachten de mbo-opleiding Fotografie & Journalistiek af om daarna, na lang twijfelen of hij door wilde studeren, voor de hboopleiding Media & Entertainment Management op NHL Stenden te kiezen.

Mark had tijdens Fotografie & Journalistiek continu de gedachte om na het behalen van zijn diploma direct aan het werk te gaan: het liefst als fotograaf met wat losse journalistieke schrijfklusjes. Studeren zat er volgens hem echt niet in. “Ik heb altijd gedacht dat studeren niets voor mij was. Ik kwam toch van het vmbo?” Toch kwamen er twijfels toen hij de opleiding Media & Entertainment Management voorbij zag komen.

“Gelukkig besloot ik toen toch om ervoor te gaan: op die manier kon ik nog vier jaar lang meer ervaring opdoen en had ik dat hbo-papiertje als een mooi einddoel.”

Eigen pad Wanneer je ervoor kiest om de pabo te gaan doen, is het vrij voor de hand liggend wat je later zult gaan worden. Maar bij een studie als Media & Entertainment Management zijn die mogelijkheden natuurlijk veel groter en minder voor de hand liggend. Mark wist dus tijdens de eerste jaren van zijn studie eigenlijk ook nog niet wat hij er mee wilde gaan doen.

“Als jong ventje wilde ik altijd bij de technische recherche, want die spannende witte pakken

op tv spraken mij heel erg aan.

Maar tijdens de open dagen op het vmbo kwam ik er al vrij snel achter dat dat wereldje toch niks voor mij was. Zelf kon ik door mijn jeugd op Ameland altijd heel erg genieten van de natuur en mijn creativiteit.

Ik begon met fotograferen en had op het eiland genoeg ruimte en mooie plekken om daarmee te oefenen en mezelf te ontwikkelen. Daarnaast schreef ik toentertijd wel eens voor een lokaal vrijetijdsmagazine – waar ik nu na al die jaren nog steeds voor schrijf – en zo ontstond mijn interesse in de journalistieken fotografiewereld. Op mijn zestiende koos ik om die reden voor de mbo-opleiding Fotografie & Journalistiek in Drachten.

Nadenken over de toekomst doe je dan op dat moment natuurlijk nog niet echt: je bent dan veel meer bezig met wat je op dat moment leuk vindt om te doen.

Toen ik vervolgens in de eerste jaren van mijn hbo-opleiding zat wist ik nog steeds niet wat ik precies zou moeten later. En ik wil ook graag meegeven dat dat helemaal niet gek is: het wordt vaak wel altijd een beetje van je verwacht, maar kies je eigen pad en tempo hierin.”

Nieuwsgierig naar meer Toen Mark na het vele twijfelen toch voor zichzelf de keuze had gemaakt om door te studeren na het mbo was het al snel duidelijk dat het Media & Entertainment Management op NHL Stenden zou gaan worden. “Ik woonde dus al in Leeuwarden en vond het altijd een hele leuke stad, dus het lag voor de hand om daar te blijven. Ook gingen wij als eilanders nog vaak terug naar huis in de weekenden, dus een studie zoeken aan de andere kant van het land was sowieso geen optie. Het fotograferen en schrijven was daarbij nog steeds mijn grote hobby en ook beide had ik goed ontwikkeld tijdens bijvoorbeeld mijn mbo-stage bij de Leeuwarder Courant. Nieuws brengen in de vorm van tekst én beeld vond ik ontzettend leuk.

Toch was ik nieuwsgierig naar meer in de mediawereld.”

‘Ik wilde wel verder kijken dan mijn neus lang is, ik hoefde niet mijn hele leven in Friesland te blijven wonen’

Loslaten De eerste twee jaren van zijn studie worstelde Mark regelmatig met de twijfels over wat de toekomst moest gaan brengen. “Totdat ik het losliet tijdens de vrije keuzeruimte in het derde jaar van de studie.

Het Grand Tour programma van NHL Stenden was toen, en volgens mij nu nog steeds, een hele populaire minor onder studenten. Ik vertrok voor tien weken naar Bali om daar de minor Eventmanagement te gaan doen. Een hele leuke tijd waar niet alleen mijn interesse voor de evenementenbranche

naar voren kwam, maar waar ik ook veel over mezelf leerde en die twijfels en onzekerheid wat meer los durfde te laten.

Terug in Nederland ging ik door met Eventmanagement en toen begon ik echt te denken dat ik er verder in wilde.

Toekomstbeeld Natuurlijk koos Mark niet voor niets opnieuw voor de gastvrijheidsindustrie met zijn nieuwe baan. “De hotellerie is echt iets waar ik mezelf in zie blijven werken, ook op de lange termijn. Het is zo tof om mensen te inspireren en activeren om er op uit te gaan en vooraf al een onvergetelijke beleving voor hen te creëren. De komende jaren wil ik graag groeien als marketeer, zoveel mogelijk ervaring opdoen en mezelf blijven uitdagen.

We zullen zien waar dat me uiteindelijk gaat brengen.”

‘Ik draag graag bij aan het plezier en geluk van iemand die ervoor kiest om er op uit te gaan’

Wijze raad Raad voor studenten heeft Mark zeker. “Toen ik van de basisschool kwam was vmbo-basis volgens de leraren voor mij de eerste halte.

Ook werd mij altijd geadviseerd om na de middelbareschooltijd voor het mbo te gaan en daarna een baan te zoeken. Toch heb ik vmbo op theoretische leerweg kunnen afronden en ben ik na het mbo gaan studeren. Ik heb altijd zelf de keuze gemaakt om mijn verwachtingen bij te stellen en mezelf gemotiveerd om er meer uit te halen. Na al die jaren ben ik blij dat ik heb doorgezet en dat mijn twijfels niet de overhand kregen. Denk dus vooral niét dat je het niet kunt en probeer je twijfels los

te laten, want uiteindelijk kun je alles bereiken, ook al past het op dit moment niet binnen de lijnen van je opleiding.”

‘Het meehelpen aan iets wat later een leuke beleving voor iemand anders is, dat vind ik leuk om te doen’

Onverwachte wending Toen het tijd was om af te studeren vertrok Mark naar Amsterdam voor een stage bij WestCord Hotels, iets wat hij aan het begin van zijn studietijd nooit had kunnen voorspellen.

“Ik kwam bij het zoeken naar een stage in de evenementenbranche puur door toeval op de sales- en marketingafdeling terecht bij WestCord, en ook daar leerde ik weer erg veel nieuwe dingen waarvan ik niet had verwacht dat ze bij me zouden passen. Ik mocht blijven werken na mijn studie en kon mezelf opeens marketeer noemen. Uiteindelijk ben ik daar drie jaar gebleven, afgelopen maand heb ik de overstap gemaakt naar de Van der Valk Hotels. Daar werk ik nu als content marketeer. Ook woon ik nu in Nieuwegein, vlakbij Utrecht.” Wie had dat kunnen bedenken toen hij begon de studie Media & Entertainment Management?

THE LEEUWARDEN HUSTLE MUSIC, LIFE AND HOW TOUGH THE INDUSTRY CAN BE Tekst en fotografie: Jody Simone For many students, Leeuwarden is merely a place to study, pass though, or meet other internationals, but for the ones who find its charms captivating a world of art, music and friendship can be found and formed. Becoming a musician in this world full of talent can be difficult, tiring and not worth it at times. Lucky for those part of the intimate scene here in little old Leeuwarden, the love for the music prevails.

“I was the quiet kid at the back of the class that wasn’t particularly special at anything. Picked last on the baseball team, had asthma and was really obsessed with cartoon network. On one ordinary day I was looking through one of my mom’s many photo albums and a picture of my dad flew out landing on the floor. It was him in a beanie playing a Gibson les Paul if my memory serves me right.”

Patrick Ricao, the busting visionary brain behind the creative musical concept of Code Noir launched his musical journey at the age of 13. He has gained most of his skills by learning how to play the guitar, as well as other musical instruments, on his own accord. He began his time in the Netherlands as a metal guitarist but was quickly introduced to the world of jamming. It is safe to say that metal got tossed out the window. Code Noir’s first time on a stage didn’t turn out as well as he had hopped.

I am sure we have all hear of the term “liquid courage”.

“The first time was embarrassing though; I was so drunk my beer kept falling out of my hand and the bar owner had to kick me off the stage.”

After moving to Leeuwarden from Gronning, Code Noir gravitated to the infamous Wednesday jam sessions at the club where everyone is free to be themselves, Mukkes.

According to Code Noir these jam sessions broke his boundaries as a musician and forced him to learn to play in the moment. Their band was later invited to perform at world renowned festival Psy Fi for 3 consecutive years.

“It really thought me how spiritual music can be if you’re playing in the moment and let everything go.”

Some other musically influential locations that have aided Code Noir in expressing his musical abilities include Neushoorn and Scooters. Both of which are next to each other in the Leeuwarden city centre. Performing on stage can sometimes be intense or nerve racking but by putting oneself out there, the right people are bound to be met.

“Some of the most hard working and creative musicians live in Leeuwarden. They are intelligent, diverse and entrepreneurial minded. However, because it’s so small it all turns into having too many fish in a small pond. But I still think that the artists and musician from Leeuwarden are world class. It just misses the management, the marketing and the right push. There’s new school, combing with old school, digital mixing it up with analog, it’s brilliant. I really want it to be the cultural city of Europe one day. Not the Frisian version, but the best multicultural city that it can be version.”

Code Noir has worked and produced with some other local artist such as WhatsCookingInTheKitchen, Thalie, Rawal and Patrick E. By opening up the doors to learn from one another a new perspective on music can be absorbed.

The musical expats that have rooted themselves in Leeuwarden have a lot to offer, but occasionally experience the tight mentality that is attached up here in the North.

“Leeuwarden is sometimes like the old white guy that is afraid of changes.”

Speaking of WhatsCookingInTheKitchen, this Zimbabwean born producer has worked his way through many talented artists that have lived or are living in Leeuwarden as well around Europe and South Africa. His producing skills have developed over the best part of 15 years and is purely self-taught.

Although a talented rapper at times, WhatsCooking prefers to remain behind in his studio and let the artist’s shine.

“I really hate to see talented people go to waste because of either a lack of confidence or a lack of opportunity. My focus is to always bring to light the unseen. There are people out there who can sing or rap, but

they have never been given a platform. A free platform. I offer time and patience.

And that’s all it costs to record with me.

Work ethic, effort and appreciation. My job as a human is to always to try and leave someone a better person that when they encountered you.”

WhatsCooking has seen the diversity with local hip hop artists such as Givenski and Simba as well as alternative artist, Code Noir. For WhatsCooking, and much to the likes of Code Noir, the music scene in Leeuwarden is often witnessed as dead, old and aging, but in a way, he sees a musical gentrification is transforming.

“The dynamic nature of the new Leeuwarden music scene is developing.

Very different genres, same audience.”

Being in the music industry has its struggles. Not only is there a massive pool of many talented people in the world, but too musicians trying to find ways in which to reach a potential fan base is challenging, especially when living in such a small little town. Both Code Noir and WhatsCookingInTheKitchen along with the hundreds, if not thousands, of musicians living in Leeuwarden hustle every day to express what they love to their fans. Next time a local artist asks for some support, be sure to lend a helping hand.

“Just be nice. The industry doesn’t need worse natured people. There’s no need for this industry to show no love. Music is love. There’s no reason for people to be negative and there’s certainly no reason for the music industry to cheat its custodians.

We, talented people, and those talented enough to bring our talent out, and most importantly our fans and listeners everywhere, are the custodians of music.”

I don’t really have that much thought about it. To me it’s like spaghetti. It is something that exists. I don’t believe that there is too much of a moral aspect to really find anything about it.

As long as it is in parameters of safety, health and within the law then I have no further thoughts on it. It’s personal choice.

One thing I am sure of though is this: congratulations to those who manage to use it without crossing the line.

That’s the hardest part. Everyone is able to start this less ‘invasive’ practice, but very few are really able to use it properly. As said before, the most important thing is to stick to the limit, a micro-dose every day for a short period of absolute necessity. Making this practice a routine, which means using it for months for example risk diminishing its effect in the first place and leading therefore people to use it in larger and more lethal quantities to feel its effect.

A little bit like antibiotics. If you overuse, your body will simply become immune to that antibiotic without having the desired effect, pushing therefore people to consume it in excessive ways.

I see more and more people doing drugs. I believe that the pandemic has a big influence on students with doing drugs. Even though I do not have any experience with doing drugs, I am interested in the effects and how people behave when they take drugs. However, we are not talking about doing drugs in general, but about Microdosing. I can imagine that taking small amounts of psychedelics can increase the creative mind. Educate yourself, make conscious decisions, consider precautions and consequences and use the right psychedelics. Besides this, I do not think that doing drugs is for everyone.

Micro dosing in itself is fine, and the idea of creating more awareness of it is also great. The problem with talking about micro dosing is it might be mistaken for promoting the use of drugs which in the hand of unreliable people can be the start of a dangerous lifestyle. The people around us that start to consume substance never really start by saying “I want to be an addict.” Micro dosing can start with a positive intent but could still end badly. It’s a delicate topic.

Educating people about it needs to be in a very curated manor.

Oana Microdosing is okay when regulated.

People should be able to perform a test run to see what works for their mental and physical state. I see the value they can have on the performances in a suited workplace. Although people should be guided to take the right amount and also not get dependent on microdosing. Before you start with microdosing you should also reflect on your workload. Are you taking up too many tasks and is there a possibility to focus your attention and creativity on less problems, so you don’t feel the need for psychedelics? All in all, with the right regulation and educating work in advance it is okay to do and experiment.

Jasmijn Myrthe Isabelle I fear that some people will get addicted.

I understand that people with certain depression or mental state might gain some sort of help, but yeah, I fear that people will get addicted.

I think micro dosing can be inspirational and can promote productivity and creativity. However, I think it is important to ask yourself “why” you want to do this and “how” you will feel while and after doing it. So, it might be helpful if you dose the right amount and keep monitoring yourself.

I am okay with people who microdose.

I think it is important that people trust themselves with the products and that they know what they are doing. Safety first. I totally understand why people would microdose, especially in busy and stressful periods, or when they need the maximum of their creativity. I personally do not think this is worse or better than taking Ritalin for example, there’s just a very big taboo around drugs which I think society needs to change and instead of feeding a fear, educate people about the topic.

Mariska “Door de onzekerheid op dit moment heb ik ervoor gekozen om in Nederland te blijven. Het is namelijk lastig te bepalen hoe alles gaat lopen met de vaccinaties en of/welke grenzen er open gaan. Eerst ga ik met mijn familie twee weekjes kamperen en daarna ga ik met mijn vriendinnen een midweekje naar de kust.”

Fenna “Ik mag deze zomer lekker blijven werken bij het bedrijf waar ik mijn afstudeerstage nu doe. Dus niet op vakantie, niet bruin worden, maar wel geld verdienen :) Gelukkig wonen we in de mooiste provincie van Nederland, dus kan ik in het weekend lekker genieten van de natuur én natuurlijk van de horeca.”

Jody “Working, working, work, work, working. My personal situation forces me to use the freedom from university to build up a savings for the following school year. My work will however take me to Munich, Barcelona, Miami, Cape Town, Georgia, Portugal and Morocco. I guess one could say ‘killing two birds with one stone’.”

Niels “Kijk, dit is dus een lastige vraag. In het voorwoord spreek ik mijn hoop al uit over de vaccinaties en de vrijheid die het weer gaat opleveren, maar op het moment van schrijven weet ik nog bar weinig. Om deze reden houd ik mijn kansen lekker open. Geen tickets kopen en op het laatste moment maar kijken wat er kan. Bovendien heb ik Nederland nog lang niet uitgespeeld, dus ook wat dat betreft is er genoeg te beleven!”

Renske “Voor deze zomer heb ik nog geen specifieke vakantieplannen gemaakt. Ik krijg de kans om na het behalen van mijn diploma (hopelijk over een paar weken... fingers crossed) aan het werk te gaan, dus daar ligt de focus nu meer op voor mij. Wel heb ik in augustus een aantal festivalweekenden op de planning staan, dus met een beetje coronageluk kunnen we daar gewoon naartoe. Dat zou voor mij al een vakantie op zich zijn! ;)”

FESTIVAL ESSENTIALS ARE YOU PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY PREPARED FOR THE FUTURE OF FESTIVALS? Tekst: Jody Simone | Fotografie: Niels Remigius

After nearly 16 months of confinement and quarantine, the festival season lays on the ever-changing horizon before us. What exactly are festivals going to compose of this time round? What are the essential tools we need to have in our backpack and which festivals will actually be taking place (fingers crossed)? For those that are looking to attend festivals in Friesland a range of tastes can be offered. My personal favorite is Welcome to The Village which takes place from July 16th-18th. Food, music, fun, science and beautiful people can be found exchanging stories, ideas and movement over at the Groene Ster just outside of Leeuwarden. World famous PsyFi trance festival will be taking place at the same location on August 25th-29th of this year. A festival full to the brim with light and love. Being a student in Leeuwarden can sometimes be a little pricey, but these two festivals are sure worth the half a year’s savings you’ve been hustling for during the pandemic.

Let’s get into the pre, during and post festival essentials for this coming period. “Pre” focuses on and including the day before attending. “During”, well this is obvious. And “post” festival essentials will guide the tired body and mind to their perfect rest state after being exposed to the first sight of “normal” in ages.

BEFORE THE BOOGEY

IT’S TIME TO DANCE

The first step is to find a festival that tickles your tastebuds, dig into that savings account that you cleaned houses so hard for and buy that, increasingly overpriced, ticket. It is extremely important to gain a good night’s sleep before diving into dancing with strangers. We wouldn’t want anyone false starting because of the lack of beauty rest now, would we? Devour a fully loaded, vitamin rich, breakfast to give you strength and stamina to endure copious amounts of alcohol and soft narcotics.

“During” the festival remain in a state of gratitude. So many people were involved in pulling off this event for your pleasure. Let’s respect not only the employees working at the festival or the other attending humans, but too the ground from which we get our nutrients.

Throw your damn litter in the trash. Remember to hydrate and use that nifty bottle cap key chain to avoid continuously purchasing plastic.

We move on to “Pre” preparation packing a bag of essentials. My personal preference is anything but a fanny-pack but realistically this is the most logical carrier of goods when attending a festival.

Now with a life of virus infused everything, sanitizer, masks and a good attitude is an important start for the base of any festival bag.

Top it off with a cool comfy outfit, a bottle cap key chain for hydration purposes, sunscreen, and earplugs to save you from going deaf at a later stage in life (if humanity makes it that far).

One important factor in this stage of festival going, is predrinking. Again, festivals are not going to be cheap in this Covid era and indulging in that lekker beirtje before heading in will surely set the tone.

When it comes to grinding and sweating on strangers, that bottle of sanitizer might come in handy on the dance floor.

Remember to be mindful of others and their personal space. It’s a good thing that this 1.5-meter rule exists, no? We need space to boogie. Another good idea for a festival essential could be wet wipes. I’m sure by now we are all visualizing those delightful little porta loos that could use more than a wet wipe to clean but our pre-Covid butts hovered on them comfortably not so long ago. Basically, wipe down the entire thing or what the hay, if it didn’t kill us before?

If during your festival adventure you so happen to take some party drugs, be aware of what you are consuming. As stubborn as the Netherlands has been about corona rules, still there are special tents at festivals to test how clean your drugs are. So, make use of this liberation luxury.

After the lights have come on, the glitter has melted away and the drugs have begun to ware off, we can begin our decent into “post” festival comfort.

TIME FLIES WHEN WE ARE DANCING WITH STRANGERS Make sure you have saved a sneaky 5 bux for a tea and croissant for the train ride home.

If you are cycling, I will pray for you. Once you make it to your humble abode, remove all festival essentials, clothing and get into that much needed shower. I completely understand that you are tired and probably couldn’t be bothered about sleeping in yours as well as other people’s bodily fluids but, washing yourself after a day full of dirt will be incredibly rewarding in the end. If you have the energy to make a small bite, do so, your body will thank you later. Be sure to grab a bottle of water or preferably a beverage containing electrolytes and set it up next to your bed. Climb in, snuggle up and feel the weight of the day melt into your mattress. It feels damn good. If you are not able to sleep, Sir David Attenborough has the most soothing voice to guide you to that space of rest, in my opinion of course.

Now that there is some form of a base line when prepping for a covid combined festival, we can see there really isn’t much difference besides what we now consider to be the “normal”.

10 BOEKEN VOOR JE ZOMERVAKANTIE VAN HILARISCHE ZELFHULP TOT SPANNENDE FANTASY

In het zonnetje genieten van een goed boek: klinkt dat oubollig of juist chill? Wat je ook van lezen vindt; het zorgt zeker voor ontspanning. En je hoeft natuurlijk ook geen megadik, saai boek te lezen. Er zijn genoeg leuke, grappige of spannende boeken. Oók voor studenten. Daarom verzamelden wij voor jou een top 10 met leuke boeken waar je de hele zomer van kunt genieten.

THE SUBTLE ART OF NOT GIVING A F*CK

BLOED EN BEENDEREN

We beginnen met een boek dat voor iedereen leuk is. Tegenwoordig worden we doodgegooid met zelfhulpboeken. Dit boek is, volgens schrijver Mark Manson zelf, hét boek voor zelfhulphaters. Manson vertelt op een grappige en herkenbare manier waarom we problemen ervaren zoals we die ervaren en hij legt uit dat je juist wél een f*ck moet geven, maar alleen om de dingen die voor jou belangrijk zijn. Dit boek is erg populair. Zo stond hij 179 weken in de New York Times bestsellerlijst!

Klinkt lekker hè? Gelukkig is het fictie. Maar in dit boek komen ook belangrijke thema’s naar voren. Je leest een spannend en meeslepend verhaal, met onderwerpen als politiegeweld, onderdrukking en macht. De schrijfster, Tomi Adeyemi is nog maar 23 jaar oud en heeft al verschillende awards gewonnen.

DE MEESTE MENSEN DEUGEN “Een onverbiddelijke bestseller”. Dat is hoe Matthijs van Nieuwkerk dit boek omschrijft. Met inzichten uit psychologie, economie, biologie en archeologie geeft schrijver Rutger Bregman antwoord op oude vragen als: waarom veroverde onze soort de aarde? Hoe verklaren we onze grootste misdaden? En zijn we diep van binnen geneigd tot het goede of het kwade? Ook dit boek is geschikt voor iedereen en heerlijk om te lezen op je luchtbedje in de zon.

DERKSEN Een boek voor de voetballiefhebbers kan natuurlijk niet ontbreken in dit lijstje. Deze biografie over de bromsnor van de Nederlandse tv is nog maar net nieuw en nu al populair. Het boek is geschreven door Michel van Egmond en Antoinnette Scheulderman. Johan Derksen vertelt over zijn jeugd, zijn liefde voor muziek en natuurlijk zijn carrière.

ROYAL PASSION Van Johan Derksen naar een zwoel, bijna erotisch boek.

Sluit mooi op elkaar aan. Het verhaal van Royal Passion begint op het afstudeerfeestje (sowieso al fijn om over te fantaseren) van hoofdpersoon Clara, waar ze een knappe man ontmoet. Deze knappe man blijkt een kroonprins van Engeland te zijn. Dit boek van Geneva Lee is perfect voor een zwoele zomeravond.

SORRY DAT IK TE LAAT BEN, MAAR IK WILDE NIET KOMEN Dit boek staat bekend als hilarisch. Schrijfster Jessica Pan vroeg zich af of haar leven er anders uit had gezien als ze extravert was geweest, in plaats van introvert. Als ze meer open had gestaan voor nieuwe ervaringen. Dus dwong ze zichzelf om een jaar lang te leven als extravert: optreden in een comedyclub, alleen op vakantie gaan, praten met vreemden in het ov. In dit boek volg je haar ongemakkelijke, maar hilarische jaar.

HET MEISJE IN DE TREIN Misschien klinkt deze titel bekend. Dit boek van Paula Hawkins is namelijk ook verfilmd. Het boek gaat over een meisje dat elke dag dezelfde trein neemt. Ze rijdt elke ochtend en avond langs dezelfde rij met huizen, waarvan twee opvallen. In de een woonde ze vroeger zelf, in de andere woont een jong stel. Een reeks van spannende gebeurtenissen volgt en de hoofdpersoon raakt steeds verder in de problemen. Een spannend boek, heerlijk voor ’s avonds bij de vuurkorf.

HET IS MAAR BLOED Alweer bloed? Jep. “Een ellendige verhalenbundel over ellendige personages die ellendige dingen meemaken.

Dat is Het is maar bloed van Jerry Hormone”, aldus Metro-columniste Elfie Tromp. Net als Het meisje in de trein is dit een spannend boek, maar stiekem is dit boek ook best grappig. De hoofdpersonen doen zichzelf en elkaar veel ellende aan. Het grijpt je aan, maar na een tijdje begin je de humor ervan in te zien, zo staat er in veel recensies.

DOE EN DENK ALS EEN KAT Maakt een kat zich druk om haar pensioen? Of doet ze werk dat ze eigenlijk niet leuk vindt? Nee, poezen zijn vrij, kalm, elegant, trots en onafhankelijk. In dit boek van Stephane Garnier lees je hoe wij ons voordeel kunnen doen met de kwaliteiten van katten. Bijvoorbeeld hoe we minder last van stress kunnen hebben en ons charisma vergroten. Een grappig boek, met eigenlijk best serieuze inzichten. En wie houdt er nou niet van katten?

GAME OF THRONES Iedereen kent deze titel natuurlijk van de populaire serie, maar ook de boeken zijn zeker de moeite waard. Hoewel het echte fantasy is, zijn de boeken populair bij een erg breed publiek. En het fijne is datje niet snel uitgelezen bent. De serie van schrijver George R.R. Martin bestaat namelijk uit maar liefst zeven (best dikke) boeken.

Door corona zijn we een aantal dingen minder gaan doen: seks hebben, goed slapen, knuffelen en bewegen. Maar van de studenten OV wordt nog volop gebruikgemaakt. De hashtag dagjesuit werd dan ook 1,2 miljoen keer bekeken op Tiktok en 88,4K keer gebruikt op Instagram. Maar waar gingen al die studenten heen en wat deden ze in die steden? Dat heb ik voor je uitgezocht, zodat je in hun voetsporen kunt treden!

ROTTERDAM (ZUID-HOLLAND)

ZWOLLE (OVERIJSSEL)

Lonely Planet riep Rotterdam een aantal jaar geleden uit tot een van de leukste steden ter wereld en door het Eurovisie Songfestival is de stad nog populairder geworden. Des te meer reden om naar deze stad te gaan. Zoals velen wel weten is de binnenstad van Rotterdam in de Tweede Wereldoorlog gebombardeerd. Die moest toen vanaf de grond weer opgebouwd worden, met kubuswoningen, Markthal en de Erasmusbrug tot gevolg.

Zwolle is een van de studentensteden van Nederland. Net zoals alle andere steden kun je hier ook winkelen en van alles bekijken, maar dat was niet de reden dat Zwolle tussen dit rijtje staat. Mijn aandacht werd getrokken door ‘destadswandeling038’, een uitje dat ik ook op Tiktok voorbij zag komen. Je gaat naar de Instagram- of Facebookpagina van De Stadswandeling 038. Na betaling ontvang je een wandelkaart van Zwolle met een uitgestippelde route, een menukaart met horecadeals en kleine opdrachten voor onderweg.

Vanaf Leeuwarden is het 2 uur en 40 minuten met het OV.

Wil je eens iets anders dan de Erasmusbrug, maar nog steeds toffe foto’s maken? Stap dan opnieuw in het OV om naar Barendrecht te gaan. Daar vind je namelijk de ‘Brug over de Oude Maas’. Ben je niet zo van de architectuur en cultuur? Ga dan eens op culinaire wereldreis in de Markthal of klim in de Euromast, waar je na de klim kunt genieten van een welverdiend drankje.

Vanaf Leeuwarden is het een klein uurtje met het OV.

Je kunt kiezen uit twee routes (6 en 6,5 kilometer). Iedere route is ongeveer anderhalf uur.

Dit is natuurlijk zonder te stoppen, want onderweg kom je langs een aantal deelnemende horecazaken waar je naargelang kunt pauzeren.

UTRECHT (UTRECHT)

Vanaf Leeuwarden is het 1 uur en 55 minuten met het OV. Vind je Amsterdam op dit moment te druk en ben je op zoek naar een alternatief?

Dan is Utrecht je stad! In deze studentenstad vind je namelijk ook veel grachten en herenhuizen. Je kunt hier - net als in Zwolle - een route lopen. Alleen is dit geen route met horecadeals, maar met kunst. Zo vind je er een streetart route, de zimihc kunstroute en de tentoonstelling ‘je mag buiten blijven!’.

ARNHEM (GELDERLAND)

Ga je over een tijdje pas naar Utrecht wanneer het weer mooier wordt en er (hopelijk) versoepelingen zijn? Huur dan eens een sloep en vaar samen met je vrienden door de grachten.

Hebben jullie zin in een iets sportievere activiteit? Je kunt er ook suppen of een kajak huren.

Vanaf Leeuwarden is het 2 uren met het OV. Als je veel op Tiktok te vinden bent dan heb je Arnhem vast weleens voorbij zien komen in je feed. Talloze studenten - vooral meiden - gingen per trein naar deze stad om bij de ijssalon Wow Waffle een wafel te halen. Van binnen is de ijssalon compleet roze en kun je er instagrammable foto’s maken. Daarnaast zijn de wafels - al zeg ik het zelf - een echte aanrader!

Maar er is natuurlijk nog meer te doen in Arnhem. Zo vind je in de wijk Klarendal een Modekwartier die geheel gewijd is aan mode, design, kunst en eten. Je vindt daar winkels, studio’s, galerieën, restaurants en nog veel meer! Ben je uitgewinkeld? Dan ben je binnen een paar minuten in het park Sonsbeek. Het park is zo groot als 134 voetbalvelden en je vindt er verschillende monumenten en gebouwen. Is dit park toch nog wat te klein? Geen probleem! De Veluwe ligt op een steenworp afstand van de stad.

GRONINGEN (GRONINGEN)

Vanaf Leeuwarden is het 45 minuten met het OV. Wil je graag wat dichter bij Leeuwarden blijven? Dan is Groningen een goede optie.

Volgens velen de leukste studentenstad van Nederland, wat ervoor zorgt dat er altijd leven is in de stad. Als je toch met het OV reist en op het station bent, kun je gelijk even naar Starbucks voor je dosis cafeïne. Deze zit namelijk op het station. Vanaf daar kun je met een willekeurige bus richting het centrum waar van dinsdag tot en met zondag markt is.

Andere bezienswaardigheden van Groningen zijn de Martinitoren die je ook nog eens kunt beklimmen, het Noorderplantsoen waar het stervensdruk is als het mooi weer is en het Groninger Museum als je zin hebt in een dagje kunst. Er zijn natuurlijk nog veel meer dorpen en steden in Nederlanden die het bezoeken waard zijn. Denk ook eens aan: Giethoorn, Maastricht, Leiden of Deventer!
