XYZ of ABC: WELLS OF ASSEMBLY Academic Project(Spring 2020): Public Space (Shop and Experience center for “WATER”) Location: Prathma blood center , Ahmedabad Area: 8000 sq meter

Site clearly has a void spaces formed between the original core working glass box which is wrapped as a skin of intuitive curved concrete walls. The huge 4.5 storey void between concrete curve walls and glass box create a sense of experience of a deep inside the Well from within. Three wells are experienced in the site all which intersects with each other as walls and thus interlocks as a volume at different heights. These wells (curved walls) are of different geometry so forms different scale of volumes. These strong geometry of the site influence the form and design with Kit of Parts.

Cantilever Model Study; Form, Geometry, Structure and Proportions Brief : Analyzing and studying the forces diagram for bending , torsion, shear and co mpression and understanding the role of each part given in designing the system such as stringer, stud, connector, bracing etc.

Learning Outcome: Form and Shape of element is very important part in order for a structure to be stable. Shaping the Kit of part should be such that it gives Form to the structure along with stability keeping in mind the material optimization.The role of same kit of part for making same, similar and different component to assemble a structually stable System.

Learning Outcome: Role of Kit of parts and junction details with each kit of part to form a component is very important because a small iteration in a detail in an open System results in Change in the Form, Shape and Structure of the entire System.

While scaling and shaping a single module ,change in a scale of one single frame results in changing the whole System and results in an open system which is flexible or transform , which can assemble itself again to some different spaces with different function.

Component 2 as a primary element responsible for changing the Form by rotating it from centroid of component from -45 to +45 degree.

Adding two same planes in each quadrilateral plane to reduce complexity of lines.

Explore in it terms of the construction techniques of the mass with respect to its tools following a method of rule making and evaluating the obtained weight vs density ratios to observe and analyze composition of mass and porosity. The connection here states the articulation of opacity within the developed assembled mass to achieve porosity.5 different explorations of mass model with cross section of these materials (i.e planar, linear, )with order based rules of construction.

Learning Outcome: The developed mass shows the property of construction with real material to elasticity, tension, bending, cutting, interlocking etc.

The resultant mass inherits the understanding of structure from cantilever model and nature inspired Assembly Based Construction such as Branching , Progression, Propagation, Thick to Thin, Solid to Hollow etc.

Making the itteration of the details and junctions of mass model helps to analyze theother options to see a component in linear, planar ways and further develop 5 other options with same component and kit of parts and thus to explore different property of same materials.

Concept of water as a function to site: A. Water takes form in which it is poured so spatially arranging/ organizing the new insertion of Well such that it forms a secondary skin inside the primary skeleton of Well and thus harmonize element with site.

B. Water is non stoppable/Nothing can stop it from flowing and so form of well is such that it tries to escape from the opaque skin of site.

Wells as an experience in original site

Huge volumes of void in well 1 , Long , high and Narrow volume in well 3 and cuboidal volume in well 2 with light entering the space from roof resulted into perceiving spaces as Well.

C. For understanding levels (looking for partial transparency in an opaque building as backdrop through interlocking slits supporting levels.Understanding form of water which tries to escape unless poured in vessel so the form of well connecting levels through bridges and staircases.

Academic Project ( Monsoon 2019): Retail Flagship store for Faber Castel Location: Vikram Sarbhai Community Science Center, Ahmedabad Area: 8000 sq feet Design Goal was : To create an inspiring space which endorse the idea of creativity and evokes a passion for art such that those qualities get transfered to the brand image of faber-castell and its products and highlight the special care that faber-castell has taken in design of its products.

The main idea is to endorse the freedom to the buyer and the user is to ‘CREATE YOUR OWN BOX’ according to the needs and wants.

Inserted Truss modules are glazed with Louvers on the facade to allow the flow of air from west- east direction. The casteleted beam truss houses the louvers in the north direction to allow light inside the space.

SECTION 33 Section 33 showing the space divides in 3 halves in which the central space behaves as module for wind /air circulation levels in the other two modules helps in the clear view even from the other half of the building. Lower spaces are the public spaces (cafe, shop )which are easily accessible rather than the upper levels which are interpretation centre which needs to be more connected with the site visually.

Process Models Activity during day time : Outreach cept office on upper level and exhibiton and training center on lower level.

Activity during night : Drama center on the lower exploration of form with structural system along with existing sturucture , shape according to functional requirements and adding levels in space for ease of visual connection and also to have hierarchy.

Forms are developed such that more overlooking spaces i.e. Open spaces are formed for having visual connectoin between two levels in the spaces.

Lower half of space accomodates exhibition space and training center for students assisting for outreach office and upper half accomodates outreach office staff.

Multifunctional space for story telling Space is designed such that the private areas can be locked and other are kept open at night for story telling activity during night.

06 Furniture Academic Project ( 2016 - 2017) Working with Metal and Wood Location: CEPT Workshops , CEPT University, Ahmedabad

Exploring wood and metal as material for Furniture development. Replica of one metal and one wood chair was made to understand the quality and techinques used with the material to develop a furniture piece.

The final prototype furnitire was designed for a existing space designed by Frank lloyd wright after a detailed study and research of the furniture, section sizes , material, joinery details, form etc previosly designed by the arcitect.

Whole chair is made in 3 parts ; Seat, Back and Structure. Whole structure is bend in just 2 parts assembled with a sleve oped with the lathe machine. Seat and back frame are assembled with the structure through allen key Joint.

The whole chair is assembeled without the help of glue . The process involved working with Sanding, Cutting, turning machines in the wood workshop.

Academic Project(Monsoon 2018)Restaurant Design with Light and Material Exchange Semester_Hochschule fur Technik, Stuttgart

This design shows the harmony between two colors brown and blue because it relates with sky, water and earth and thus binds whole of space together.

Adding arches to the space brings in smoothness to the space compliment by arched windows, semicircular Extruded sitting back wall along with vaulted light element to the left in entrance. Arches divides the space in two halves each separated by lighting contrast. Right half of the space is designed to be more dark as to keep the idea of focus on the tables whereas left half of the space is designed to be more bright as it serves the main entry to the space compliments by arch windows which brings in more brightness and openness to the space. Space is raw and traditional because of use of traditional materials like terrazzo, indigo blue color, indigo blue ceramic tiles, cane weaved sheet, ceramic, rough wood/veneer.

Academic Project(Spring 2020) Co-orporate Office Design Location: Stuttgart, Germany Area: 1500 sq feet Design if the space is an office ofice system where the Central cuboids play role of public spaces such as pantry, archives, telephone box, printing space etc while personal work stations are surrounding this cuboidal boxes such that whole space act as an island where person can move around each space freely.

Individual work stations are on side of windows to allow natural light for each desk and light in corridor through spaces between each cuboids which are diagonally arranged and this spaces act as a secondary door for each working space behind the corridor.

Process Designing a space with help of ceiling. i.e. making space in space with help of closed loops which makes the boundary of the space indirectly and the common space between the loops act a as doors or entry passages. The main idea behind lighting is to highlight the diagonal line by a. Lighting on diagonal line in ceiling. b. Lighting the cuboids to light the diagonal indirectly.

Bamboo Deck Summer Winter School (May 2017)Project: Himalayan Raw Architecture Location: Dhulikhel , Nepal with Abari Workshop

Cantilever Bamboo Deck The Building of small bamboo deck / pavilion space to scale so as to explore the various stages and structural aspects of this style of construction.

The learnings during the project included the study of the inherent properties of bamboo and it’s use in structural design during their site visits to ABARI projects but also were keen to train in making our joining mechanisms.

Step 01

Preparing foundation pit for the cantilever deck with column on both side with a connecting beam .

Digging a pit and then first filling up with stones and then ramming it so that the earth stays at a place and gives a plain clean surface for frame work to rest and concrete to be poured.

Step 02

Selecting bamboo and processing it.

For structural use bamboo should always be selected from the shorter side i.e from the side where there is lesser distance between two nodes. Then sanding the nodes and making it smooth for aesthetics and also to avoid wear and tear.

Applying varnish on bamboo for aesthetics and to protect it from rain, sun, wind etc.

Step 03

Making fish mouth joinery in bamboo and fixing it with barrel nut and threaded rod.Horizontal 45 degree bracing drilling on site while assembling and tying it with threaded rod and nut.

Brand Wall Concepts The brand concept is developed by taking the inferences from the expressions ,language, style, material, form and colour of the Furnitures and inteior elements designed by brand Arisaa.

Toning down the background shades such that the brand wall is highlighed through the dark blink red and blue color.

Arch shape infered from the forms and the shape of the furniture. Black powder coated metal frame complimenting the sleekness also presented in the furniture elements.

These wells (curved walls) are of different geometry so forms different scale of volumes. These strong geometry of the site influence the form and design with Kit of Parts.

The roofing material is slate stone, which is cut into sleek slabs and laid on a wooden framework, overlapping each other to prevent water penetration.

The wall beams were held together with dovetail joinery.

Kath-Kuni Architecture The majority of the work was done by hand and by the residents themselves. Temples and religious structures were built by special artisans. Stone and wood are alternately stacked to form the walls, with wooden members interlocking at corners. Himachal Pradesh is abundant in strong, long-lasting timber. The wall, flooring, and roofing members are made of Deodar/Kali wood, an endemic species to the western Himalayas and one of the strongest of Indian conifers. According to popular belief, this Himalayan wood will last 1,000 years in water and ten times longer in air. Slate is a waterproof roofing material that is used to protect buildings from heavy rain and snowfall.

The edge members are lap joined and kadil-secured (wooden nail). This alternating stone and wood arrangement adds flexibility and has proven to be a good safeguard against frequent seismic tremors.
