Die außergewöhnlich großzügige Schenkung der Eva Felten Fotosammlung markiert einen historischen Moment in der Geschichte des Museums Brandhorst. Mit einem Umfang von 429 Werken von 140 Künstler:innen – aufgrund zahlreicher Serien sind es insgesamt 1 095 Aufnahmen – handelt es sich nicht nur quantitativ um einen substanziellen Zuwachs. Die durchweg herausragende Qualität der Werke bedeutet auch eine Bereicherung in einem Medium, das für die Kunst des 20. und 21.

Jahrhunderts von zentraler Bedeutung war und ist. Zwar verfügte die Sammlung Brandhorst bereits über einige herausragende Konvolute in der Fotografie, dank der international bedeutenden Eva Felten Fotosammlung ist das Museum jedoch nun in der Lage, wesentliche Entwicklungen der Fotografie von den 1930er-Jahren bis in die unmittelbare Gegenwart präsentieren zu können. Sie schließt damit eine Lücke in einem Museum, das seit seiner Eröffnung 2009 zu einem der bedeutendsten Museen für zeitgenössische Kunst in Deutschland herangewachsen ist.

Die Eva Felten Fotosammlung setzt bei der Street Photography ein. Zahlreiche Ikonen von Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Helen Levitt, Lisette Model und Garry Wino­ grand sind zumeist in technisch herausragenden Abzügen vertreten. Sie finden in sozialkritischen Fotografien von Gordon Parks, Diane Arbus, Larry Clark, Anthony Hernandez, PhilipLorca diCorcia und Nan Goldin ihre Fortschreibung. Darunter befinden sich auch exzellente Beispiele der frühen Farbfotografie von Saul Leiter, William Eggleston und Joel Meyerowitz.

Ein weiterer Fokus der Sammlung liegt auf der konzeptuellen Fotografie ab den 1960er-Jahren mit Werken von Ed Ruscha, Robert Heinecken und Victor Burgin bis hin zu Thomas Ruff, Christopher Williams, Zoe Leonard und Roni Horn. Hinzu kommen exzeptionelle Arbeiten der Pictures Generation von Sherrie Levine, Laurie Simmons, Louise Lawler und Richard Prince. Die unermüdliche Neugierde und Begeisterungsfähigkeit, mit der Eva Felten auch die jüngeren Entwicklungen der Fotografie verfolgt, zeigen sich in aktuellen Erwerbungen etwa von Carrie Mae Weems, Deana Lawson, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Zanele Muholi und A.L. Steiner.

Die Eva Felten Fotosammlung zeichnet sich durch eine bemerkenswerte internationale Ausrichtung aus. Neben den US-amerikanischen Positionen, die den größten geografischen Sammlungsschwerpunkt bilden, erweitern weitere geografische Regionen die Sammlung um wichtige Sichtweisen und Perspektiven. Mit Michał Cała, Viktor Kolář, Zofia Rydet, Jitka Hanzlová und Joanna Piotrowska befinden sich herausragende Werke von osteuropäischen Künstler:innen aus Polen, Tschechien und Rumänien in der Sammlung. Ein eigenständiger Schwerpunkt liegt im Bereich der japanischen Fotografie, die mit Werken von Nobuyoshi Araki, Shōmei Tōmatsu, Issei Suda, Kazuo Sumida und Shin Yanagisawa vertreten ist. Neben Positionen aus dem Vereinigten Königreich wie Victor Burgin, Isaac Julien und Jo Spence sowie Christer Strömholm aus Schweden, Rineke Dijkstra aus den Niederlanden und dem Schweizer Künstler Walter Pfeiffer, umfasst die Sammlung mit Tracey Moffatt aus Australien, Pieter Hugo und Zanele Muholi aus Südafrika sowie Malick Sidibé aus Mali auch kleinere Konvolute aus Afrika und Australien.

Auf vielseitige und ideale Weise ergänzt die Eva Felten Fotosammlung damit die bisherigen Bestände der Sammlung Brandhorst: Bei Cady Noland, Mike Kelley, Arthur Jafa, Robert Gober, Pope.L oder Kara Walker sind die Verbindungen zur Pop Art besonders augenfällig – insbesondere zu Andy Warhol und Ed Ruscha – sowie auch zu den sich daran anschließenden Tendenzen des Neo-Pop mit seinen teils abgründigen Analysen der US-amerikanischen Konsumgesellschaft und ihren repressiven Strukturen. Darüber hinaus legt die Fotosammlung einen wichtigen Grundstein und gibt Bezugspunkte für die zunehmend wichtiger werdende Auseinandersetzung mit digitalen Reproduktionstechniken.

The extraordinarily generous gift of the Eva Felten Photography Collection marks a historical moment in the history of Museum Brandhorst. With 429 works by 140 artists—1,095 photographs in total, thanks to the numerous series—it is a substantial increase in material, but not only quantitively. The consistently exceptional quality of the works also represents an expansion in a medium that was and is of central importance to art of the 20th and 21st centuries. The Brandhorst Collection was already in possession of several outstanding sets of photographs. Thanks to the internationally important Eva Felten Photography Collection, however, the museum is now in a position to present essential developments in photography from the 1930s to the immediate present. It thus fills a gap in a museum that since its opening in 2009 has grown to be one of Germany’s most important museums for contemporary art.

The Eva Felten Photography Collection begins with street photography. Numerous icons by Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Helen Levitt, Lisette Model, and Garry Winogrand are represented, usually in technically outstanding prints. They find their successors in the sociocritical photographs of Gordon Parks, Diane Arbus, Larry Clark, Anthony Hernandez, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, and Nan Goldin. The collection includes excellent examples of early color photography by Saul Leiter, William Eggleston, and Joel Meyerowitz. Another focus of the collection is conceptual photography from the 1960s onward, with works ranging from artists like Ed Ruscha, Robert Heinecken, and Victor Burgin to Thomas Ruff, Christopher Williams, Zoe Leonard, and Roni Horn.

In addition, there are exceptional works of the Pictures Generation

by Sherrie Levine, Laurie Simmons, Louise Lawler, and Richard Prince. The indefatigable curiosity and enthusiasm with which Eva Felten also follows the latest developments in photography are seen in recent acquisitions of Carrie Mae Weems, Deana Lawson, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Zanele Muholi, and A.L. Steiner, for example.

The Eva Felten Photography Collection is distinguished by a notably international orientation. In addition to American artists, who represent the strongest geographical emphasis of the collection, other geographic regions expand the collection with impor­ tant viewpoints and perspectives. In Michał Cała, Viktor Kolář, Zofia Rydet, Jitka Hanzlová, and Joanna Piotrowska, the collection has works from Eastern European artists from Poland, the Czech Republic, and Romania. Another focus is Japanese photography, represented by the works of Nobuyoshi Araki, Shōmei Tōmatsu, Issei Suda, Kazuo Sumida, and Shin Yanagisawa. In addition to art­ ists from the United Kingdom, such as Victor Burgin, Isaac Julien, and Jo Spence; Christer Strömholm of Sweden; Rineke Dijkstra of the Netherlands; and the Swiss artist Walter Pfeiffer, the collection also has smaller sets of works from Africa and Australia by Tracey Moffatt of Australia, Pieter Hugo and Zanele Muholi of South Africa, as well as Malick Sidibé of Mali.

In a variety of ways, the Eva Felten Photography Collection complements ideally the existing holdings of the Brandhorst Collection: in the case of Cady Noland, Mike Kelley, Arthur Jafa, Robert Gober, Pope.L, and Kara Walker, the connections to Pop Art are especially striking—especially to Andy Warhol and Ed Ruscha—as well as to later trends of Neo-Pop with its occasionally cryptic analyses of the consumer society of the United States and its repressive structures. The photo collection also lays a cornerstone and gives points of reference for the increasingly important discussion of digital reproduction technologies.

Bereits früh, kurz nach Beginn ihrer Sammelleidenschaft in den späten 1980er-Jahren, entschied sich Eva Felten für ein übergeordnetes Thema ihrer Fotografie-Sammlung: die Darstellung von Menschen. Was die Aufnahmen eint, ist der sensible Blick auf das Schicksal einzelner Menschen, insbesondere auch jener, die abseits des Mainstreams leben. In der Gesamtschau entsteht ein vielfältiges menschliches Panorama an zutiefst unterschiedlichen Lebenssituationen und -entwürfen, politischen Haltungen, sozialen Ungleichheiten, inneren Stimmungen und Konflikten. Diese soziale, menschlich offene Schwerpunktsetzung, die Eva Felten in den letzten Jahren konsequent weitergeführt hat, macht die Sammlung in dieser Form einzigartig.

Der hier vorliegende Katalog führt in den umfangreichen Bestand der Eva Felten Fotosammlung ein, der anlässlich der Ausstellung This Is Me, This Is You. Die Eva Felten Fotosammlung erstmals der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert wird.

Titelgebend für die Ausstellung und Publikation ist eine 96-teilige Fotoserie von Roni Horn. Mit This Is Me, This Is You hat die US-amerikanische Künstlerin ein Schlüsselwerk geschaffen, in dem zentrale Fragen des Mediums Fotografie zur Sprache kommen: Ist es der objektive Blick der Kamera, der sein Motiv mit maschineller Unbestechlichkeit festhält? Oder wird das Bild von dem subjektiven Blick der Fotografin strukturiert? Sind die Aufnahmen inszeniert oder spontan, bildhaft oder performativ? Und welche Rolle kommt dem Blick der Betrachtenden zu? Auf humorvolle und unterhaltsame Weise verwickelt uns Roni Horns Bildserie in das komplexe Spiel von Blickverhältnissen, die auch den Ausgangspunkt der Ausstellungskonzeption bilden.

Die Mammutaufgabe der Inventarisierung der Eva Felten Fotosammlung, die Konzeption und Organisation der Ausstellung und der vorliegenden Publikation sind das Ergebnis der gemeinsamen Anstrengung vieler. Ihnen allen möchten wir für ihren Einsatz danken.

Zuallererst gilt unser Dank der Kuratorin der Ausstellung und Herausgeberin des Katalogs Monika Bayer-Wermuth, die dieses Projekt mit Weitsicht und unerschütterlichem Enthusiasmus geleitet hat und sich der Werke mit großer Hingabe annahm. From early on, shortly after her passion for collecting began in the late 1980s, Eva Felten chose an overarching theme for her photography collection: the depiction of human beings. The photographs are united by a sensitive look at the fate of individual people, especially those living outside of the mainstream. Seeing them together offers a diverse human panorama of profoundly different living situations and lifestyles, political attitudes, social inequalities, and inner moods and conflicts. This social, humanistic open emphasis, which Eva Felten has pursued consistently in recent years, makes the collection unique in this form.

The present catalogue is an introduction to the extensive holdings of the Eva Felten Photography Collection, presented to the public for the first time in the exhibition This Is Me, This Is You: The Eva Felten Photography Collection. The title of the exhibition and publication is taken from a series of 96 photos by Roni Horn. In This Is Me, This Is You, the American artist created a key body of work that raises central questions about the medium of photography: Does the objective gaze of the camera capture its motif with the integrity of a machine? Or is the image structured by the photographer’s subjective gaze? Are the photographs staged or spontaneous, visual or performative? And what role does the viewer’s gaze play? In a humorous and entertaining way, Roni Horn’s series of photographs involves us in the complex game of the gaze relationships that are also the point of departure for the conception of the exhibition.

The mammoth task of inventorying the Eva Felten Photography Collection and the conception and organization of the exhibition and this publication are the result of a joint effort by many people. We would like to thank them for their contributions.

First of all, we thank the curator of the exhibition and editor of the catalogue, Monika Bayer-Wermuth, who led this project with farsightedness and relentless enthusiasm and approached the works with great dedication. We and the hopefully large audience can now experience the result of this vision for the first time. We look ahead with great anticipation at the many more discoveries that await us in changing presentations of the collection in the coming years. With her decision to entrust her collection to a public museum, Eva Felten is providing a gift to our visitors, who in the future will be able to see and admire these photographs in the rooms of Museum Brandhorst, and to engage in a dialog with them, juxtaposing their own ‘me’ against the photographed ‘yous’: This Is Me, This Is You. Eva Felten’s openness to experimentation, her aesthetic sense, and her exemplary generosity have earned our grateful admiration.

Achim Hochdörfer: In den frühen 1990er-Jahren hast du begonnen, Fotografie zu sammeln. Was hat dich daran inte­ ressiert?

Eva Felten: Ich hatte nicht wirklich geplant, eine Fotosammlung aufzubauen. Aber ich interessierte mich schon früh für Künstler:innen wie Sherrie Levine, Richard Prince und Roni Horn, zunächst für ihre Gemälde und Skulpturen, aber bald richtete ich mein Augenmerk mehr und mehr auf ihre Fotografien. Sie beschäftigen sich damit, wo Fotografie vorkommt und wie sie unsere alltägliche Wahrnehmung prägt: als Dokument, in der Werbung, aber auch als bevorzugtes Mittel in unserer intimen, zwischenmenschlichen Kommunikation. Im Rückblick würde ich sagen, dass ich im Laufe der letzten Jahrzehnte diese Themen immer weiter vertieft habe.

Aber das hat sich erst nach und nach, ganz unsystematisch, durch intensives Betrachten und in endlosen Gesprächen entwickelt.

AH: Kannst du dich an bestimmte Momente erinnern, die deine Begeisterung für Fotografie getriggert haben?

EF: Als ich das erste Mal Bilder von Tracey Moffatt gesehen habe, war das so ein Wow-Moment: Something More (1989, S. 156), die Frau in dem roten Kleid, das sprang so ins Auge, dass ich völlig perplex war. Mein Zugang war immer ein visueller. Solche Momente, in denen man plötzlich von einem Bild gefesselt wird und alle Komponenten eine zwingende Logik entfalten – wahrscheinlich sind es diese Erfahrungen, die das Sammeln von Kunst immer wieder aufs Neue antreiben.

AH: Und was hast du dann zuerst gekauft?

EF: Tracey Moffatt, Rineke Dijkstra, Jitka Hanzlová und bald auch Nan Goldin. Dijkstras Aufnahmen von Kindern und Jugendlichen in selbst gewählten Posen haben mich gereizt, weil sie mit minimalen Mitteln ungeheuer viel erzählen. Es sind gestellte Aufnahmen in einem vorgegebenen Setting, weshalb sich die ganze Aufmerksamkeit auf die unverwechselbaren Eigenheiten der Menschen richtet. Auch von Jitka Hanzlová war ich begeistert, vor allem von ihrer Female-Serie (1997–2000, S. 66–69), für die sie Frauen in New York fotografiert hat, die sie auf der Straße interessant fand und ansprach.

Es sind spontane, aus dem Leben gegriffene Selbstdarstellungen, die allein durch Kleidung, Frisur, Körperhaltung, Gesichtsausdruck und wenige Accessoires berührende Einblicke in das Innenleben und die sozialen Codes der Menschen gewähren. Ausgehend von diesen Fotografinnen bin ich dann Ende der 1990er-Jahre historisch zurückgegangen und habe mich mehr und mehr mit Helen Levitt, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Vivian Maier, Ed van der Elsken und anderen beschäftigt.

AH: Welche anderen Aspekte der Fotografie haben dich in dieser frühen Zeit inspiriert?

EF: Zum einen Aufnahmen von Räumen und Interieurs, zum Beispiel von Thomas Ruff und Jörg Sasse, in denen mit wenigen Mitteln – ein Schwamm auf einer Ablage oder eine Nachttischlampe neben einem Bett – etwas darüber erzählt wird, wie die Gegenstände, mit denen sich Menschen umgeben, zu Trägern ihrer Gefühle und ihrer Lebensweise werden. Und zum anderen dachte ich über Bilder konzeptueller Künstler wie die von Dan Graham, Bernd und Hilla Becher, Rodney Graham und Victor Burgin nach, die sich mit der Rolle der Fotografie im öffentlichen Raum auseinandersetzen: von Billboards über Industriebauten bis zu Schallplatten­ covern.

Achim Hochdörfer: In the early 1990s, you began to collect photography. What about it interested you?

Eva Felten: I had not really planned on putting together a photo collection. I was interested early on in artists such as Sherrie Levine, Richard Prince, and Roni Horn, initially for their paintings and sculptures, but soon I shifted my focus increasingly to their photographs. They got me interested in the questions of where photography is found, and how it shapes our everyday perceptions: as a document, in advertising, but also as our preferred means of intimate, interpersonal communication. In retrospect, I would say that I got deeper and deeper into these themes over the course of recent decades. But that only evolved gradually, quite unsystematically, through intense observation and in endless conversations.

AH: Can you recall specific moments that triggered your enthusiasm for photography?

EF: The first time I saw photographs by Tracey Moffatt was a wow moment: Something More (1989, p. 156), the woman in the red dress that leapt into my eye so that I was completely perplexed. My approach was always a visual one. A compelling logic unfolds in such moments in which you are suddenly enthralled by an image and all of its components—probably those are the experiences that continually motivate anew the collecting of art.

AH: And what did you then buy first?

EF: Tracey Moffatt, Rineke Dijkstra, Jitka Hanzlová, and soon Nan Goldin as well. Dijkstra’s photographs of children and teenagers in poses they chose themselves attracted me because they tell an enormous amount with minimal means. They are posed shots in an established setting, which is why attention focuses entirely on the unmistakable features of the people. I was also enthusiastic about Jitka Hanzlová, above all her Female series (1997–2000, pp. 66–69), for which she photographed women in New York on the street whom she found interesting and spoke to. They are spontaneous self-presentations snatched from life, which solely through their clothes, hairstyles, poses, facial expressions, and a few accessories offer moving insights into the inner lives and social codes of the people.

Starting out from those women photographers, in the late 1990s I went further back in history and was preoccupied more and more by Helen Levitt, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Vivian Maier, Ed van der Elsken, and others.

AH: What other aspects of photography inspired you in this early period?

EF: First, photographs of rooms and interiors, by Thomas Ruff and Jörg Sasse, for example, in which—with just a few means, such as a sponge on a shelf or a lamp on a night table next to a bed—a story is told about how the objects with which people surround themselves convey their emotions and way of life. Second, I thought about photographs by conceptual artists, like those of Dan Graham, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Rodney Graham, and Victor Burgin, who address the role of photography in public spaces: from billboards by way of industrial buildings to record covers.

AH: Beide Stränge, sowohl die Interieurs als auch die konzeptuelle Fotografie, hast du in den folgenden Jahren nicht weitergeführt. Aber ich habe den Eindruck, dass sie deinen Blick dafür geschärft haben, was sich als zentrales Thema deiner Sammlung herauskristallisieren sollte: Darstellungen von Menschen und ihrer Lebensumstände. Aber bevor wir näher darauf eingehen: Wie war dein eigener biografischer Kontext in dieser Zeit?

EF: Meine Erziehung war alles andere als kulturaffin (lacht). Vielleicht war mein Interesse an Kunst ein Aufbegehren gegen ein enges bürgerliches Korsett. Nach dem Abitur bin ich nach Paris gegangen und habe dort alle Ausstellungen und Museen förmlich in mich aufgesogen.

Obwohl ich danach Betriebswirtschaft studiert habe, bestand mein Freundeskreis schon damals hauptsächlich aus Kunstinteressierten. Über die Jahre bildete sich so ein Netzwerk aus befreundeten Sammler:innen – auch mein damaliger Mann gehörte dazu –, Galerist:innen, Kurator:innen und Künstler:innen. Für mich war das eine faszinierende Welt. Wichtige Gesprächspartner:innen und Ratgeber:innen waren mein langjähriger, leider inzwischen verstorbener Freund Roland Angst, der ebenfalls bereits verstorbene Rudolf Kicken und seine Frau Annette, Laurence Miller, Howard Greenberg und später insbesondere Thomas Zander, dessen Begeisterung ansteckend ist.

AH: In dem Kontext hast du auch Udo Brandhorst kennengelernt?

EF: Genau – wir kennen uns seit meinem Studium in München, wir haben uns immer wieder auf Kunstmessen und Ausstellungseröffnungen gesehen. Wir haben uns ausgetauscht, diskutiert, welche Künstler:innen wir gerade interessant finden, hatten viele gemeinsame Freunde, es war immer sehr anregend. Und so sind wir 2003 auch zusammengekommen – Kunst ist das Bindeglied.

AH: Hast du auch den Kontakt zu Künstler:innen gesucht?

EF: Studiobesuche fand ich immer besonders spannend, weil man den Künstler:innen quasi beim Denken über die Schulter blicken kann. Bei Roni Horn waren wir oft in ihrem Atelier in Brooklyn, zu einer Zeit, als man noch schwer dort hinkam. Auch mit Rineke Dijkstra und Jitka Hanzlová habe ich mich bald angefreundet. Über die Jahre habe ich mich mit vielen Künstler:innen unterhalten, ein langes Gespräch mit Saul Leiter habe ich in lebendiger Erinnerung. Ein sehr eindrucksvoller Besuch war bei Isaac Julien in London, der ein perfekt ausgestattetes und organisiertes Studio hat, in dem er Fotografien aufnimmt und Szenen für seine Filme dreht.

AH: Wann wurde dir klar, dass das Ganze zu einer Sammlung wird?

EF: In den frühen 2000er-Jahren, denke ich. Da habe ich mich gefragt, was die Aufnahmen verbindet, die mich interessieren. Gibt es thematische Schwerpunkte? Eine gemeinsame Ästhetik? Es wurde mir klar, dass sich mein Sammeln nicht in erster Linie um einzelne künstlerische Positionen dreht, die erweitert und komplettiert werden müssen. Den roten Faden, den ich entdeckte, waren Menschenbilder: die Darstellung von Menschen in ihrem sozialen Umfeld.

AH: Ah – das korrespondiert ja auch damit, dass die Fotografie in der Moderne zu einem so bevorzugten künstlerischen Medium der Menschendarstellung wurde. Hast du eine Idee, warum das so ist?

EF: Ich denke, es gibt eine ganz besondere Intensität, wenn das ‚kalte‘, mechanische Herstellungsverfahren 12

AH: With both strands, the interiors and the conceptual photography, you didn’t continue pursuing them in the years that followed. But I have the impression that they have sharpened your eye for what would crystallize into the central theme of your collection, namely, depictions of human beings and their living conditions. But before we go into detail about that: What was your own biographical context like at that time?

EF: My education was anything but culturally inclined [laughs]. Perhaps my interest in art was a way of rebelling against a tight bourgeois corset. After graduating from high school, I went to Paris and soaked up all the exhibitions and museums there. Although I studied business administration later, already at that time most of my friends were interested in art. Over the years, a network of friends came together of collectors (my husband at the time was one of them), gallerists, curators, and artists. It was a fascinating world for me.

Important conversation partners and advisors included my friend of many years Roland Angst, sadly now deceased; Rudolf Kicken, who has also since passed, and his wife, Annette; Laurence Miller; Howard Greenberg; and later especially Thomas Zander, whose enthusiasm is infectious.

AH: You also met Udo Brandhorst in that context?

EF: Exactly—we had known each other since I studied in Munich, and we kept seeing each other at art fairs and exhibition openings. We had exchanges, discussed which artists we found interesting at the moment, and had many friends in common—it was always quite inspiring. And so we got together in 2003—art is the link.

AH: Did you seek out contact to artists?

EF: I always found studio visits particularly exciting, because you can look over the shoulders of artists while they are thinking, as it were. I was often in Roni Horn’s studio in Brooklyn, at a time when it was difficult to get there. I quickly became friends with Rineke Dijkstra and Jitka Hanzlová as well. Over the years, I talked with many artists; I have a vivid memory of a long conversation with Saul Leiter. One very impressive visit was with Isaac Julien in London, who has a perfectly equipped and organized studio where he takes photographs and shoots scenes for his films.

AH: When did it become clear to you that it was all becoming a collection?

EF: In the early 2000s, I think. I asked myself what connects the photographs that interest me. Are there thematic focuses? A shared aesthetic? It became clear to me that my collecting was not primarily about the individual artists’ positions, which have to be expanded and completed. The common thread that I discovered were pictures of people: the depiction of human beings in their social surroundings.

AH: Ah—that is also in keeping with the way modern photography became the preferred artistic medium for depicting people.

Do you have an idea why that is?

EF: I think there is a very special intensity when the ‘cold,’ mechanical method of photography—lens, light, clicking the shutter release, a chemical reaction—becomes interlocked with the human gaze. I once read a quotation from

der Fotografie – Linse, Licht, das Klicken des Auslösers, eine chemische Reaktion – mit dem menschlichen Blick verschränkt wird. Ich habe einmal ein Zitat von Walter Benjamin gelesen, der diese geheimnisvolle Spannung in seinem Aufsatz „Das Kunstwerk im Zeitalter seiner technischen Reproduzierbarkeit“ so beschrieben hat: „Im flüchtigen Ausdruck eines Menschengesichts winkt aus den frühen Fotografien die Aura zum letzten Mal.“ Ich denke, dass es diese magischen Momente nicht nur in der frühen Fotografie gibt ...

AH: … sondern auch in den Bildern in deiner Sammlung?

EF: Sicher, und untergründig war das wohl immer ein Motiv für mich, ein Bild zu kaufen, auch wenn ich da­ rüber so genau gar nicht immer nachgedacht habe. Aber diese Verbindung zu den Bildern war mir immer wichtig – das war etwas, das mich beispielsweise zur sozialdokumentarischen Fotografie der 1930er-Jahre und der Street Photography der 1950er- und 1960er-Jahre gebracht hat und später dann auch zurück zu den aktuellen Positionen.

AH: Aber das ist ja nicht ohne Gefahren, oder? Denn diese Bilder – und vor allem auch viele Bilder deiner Sammlung – zeigen Armut und Elend. Ob und wie Kunst das darstellen kann oder soll, darüber gab und gibt es ja bis heute Diskussionen. Wie löst du das Dilemma für dich?

EF: Ehrlich gesagt: gar nicht. Ich glaube auch nicht, dass es dafür eine Standardlösung gibt. Wenn ich viel Geld für ein Foto ausgebe, das jemanden zeigt, die oder der kaum genug hat, um zu überleben, dann ist mir der Widerspruch schon bewusst. Und gleichzeitig hoffe ich, dass ich in meinem Rahmen dazu beizutragen kann, dass solche Bilder eine Präsenz bekommen – Bilder von Künstler:innen also, die hinschauen, wo wir im Alltag meistens wegschauen, die Brüchigkeiten zeigen, wo wir lieber glatte Oberflächen haben. Das ist kein starkes Argument, ich weiß. Aber ich hoffe sehr, dass Kunst die Kraft hat, Dinge zum Besseren zu verändern oder zumindest uns zu zeigen, was wir verändern sollten.

AH: Das war eine der Sachen, die mir auch aufgefallen ist, als ich mir deine Sammlung genauer angeschaut habe – da ist eben nicht nur das Auratische, sondern auch das Politische unmittelbar spürbar. Ich denke da zum Beispiel an Richard Avedons Bild des Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee von 1963 (S. 260/261) ...

EF: … ja, diese Aufnahme von Julian Bond, wie der vorne steht und bei aller Wut gewaltfrei bleibt, das hat mich beeindruckt, vielleicht auch, weil das nicht den klassischen Vorstellungen von Heldentum entspricht. Seine Courage ist viel subtiler, er fordert, möchte vermitteln, aber losschlagen will er nicht, und gerade dadurch wirkt er verletzlich, als jemand, dem die Widersprüche der Situation klar sind und der sich da durchnavigieren muss. Und ganz abgesehen davon, dass es eine tolle Komposition ist, stellt mir das Bild halt die Frage, wo Grenzen sind, was man tut, um etwas zu erreichen, ein gesellschaftliches, ein politisches Ziel.

AH: Etwas Ähnliches habe ich bei der Arbeit Lessons of the Hour, London 1983 (Who Killed Colin Roach?) (1983/2019, S. 262–265) von Isaac Julien gedacht.

EF: Genau, es ist eine Dokumentation der antirassistischen Proteste, die damals im Anschluss an den Tod eines 21-Jährigen vor einer Polizeistation in London aufflammten. Angesichts der Black Lives Matter-Proteste ist die Serie hochaktuell. Beziehungsweise ist die Thematik einfach wieder stärker in die Medien gerückt. Ihre Brisanz und Aktualität hatte sie nie verloren.

Walter Benjamin who described this mysterious tension in his essay “The Work of Art in the Age of Its Technological Reproducibility”: “In the fleeting expression of a human face, the aura beckons from early photographs for the last time.”

I think that these magic moments do not exist solely in early photographs . . .

AH: . . . but also in the photographs in your collection?

EF: Certainly, and unconsciously that was probably always a motive for me to buy photographs, even when I didn’t always think about it specifically. But this connection to the images was always important to me—that was something that brought me to the documentary photography of 1930s society and to the street photography of the 1950s and 1960s, for example, and then later also back to current artists.

AH: But that is not without risks, is it? Because such photographs—and above all many photographs in your collection— show poverty and misery. There have been and continue to be discussions of whether and how art can or should depict that.

How do you resolve that dilemma for yourself?

EF: To be honest: not at all. I don’t believe there is a standard solution for it. When I pay a lot of money for a photograph showing someone who does not have enough money to survive, then I am certainly aware of the contradiction. At the same time, I hope that within my framework I can contribute to these images having a presence—photographs by artists who look where most of us look away in our daily lives, who show the brittleness where we would rather have smooth surfaces. That is not a strong argument, I know. But I very much hope that art has the power to change things for the better, or at least to show us what we should change.

AH: That was one of the things that struck me, too, when I looked at your collection more closely—not only the auratic but also the political is immediately tangible. I am thinking, for example, of Richard Avedon’s photograph of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee of 1963 (pp. 260/261) . . .

EF: . . . yes, this photograph of Julian Bond, standing in the front and remaining nonviolent for all of his anger, impressed me, perhaps in part because it does not correspond to classic ideas of heroism. His courage is far more subtle; he challenges, wants to communicate, but he does not want to let fly, and for that very reason he looks vulnerable, like someone who clearly sees the contradictions in the situation and has to navigate his way through them. And even apart from the fact that it is a terrific composition, the image raises the question for me: Where are the limits, and what will one do to achieve something, a social, a political goal?

AH: I thought something similar about the work Lessons of the Hour, London 1983 (Who Killed Colin Roach?) (1983/2019, pp. 262-265) by Isaac Julian.

EF: Exactly, it documents the antiracist protest that flared up following the death of a 21-year-old in front of a police station in London. The series is very topical again today in the face of the Black Lives Matter protests. Or rather these themes are simply more the focus of the media again. They never lost their explosiveness and topicality.
