Dear Friends,
We are pleased to share the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s 2024–25 Annual Report. This season was filled with unforgettable moments—from the release of our historic first recording with Music Director Jader Bignamini, to a powerful and compelling season of programming across genres, all while fostering a thriving music education ecosystem and building deeper connections and participation in the growth and well-being of our magnificent city of Detroit.
Orchestra Hall continues to serve as a musical home for thousands of people each season, and we are grateful to work alongside partners who help us create meaningful experiences that engage and connect our community. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our series sponsors for their enduring support, including PVS Chemicals, Inc., PNC Bank, and the William Davidson Foundation.
From our Opening Night Gala with Branford Marsalis to Bizet’s Carmen, and from collaborations with artists like Big Sean, Chris Thile, and Sigur Rós to wide-ranging partnerships with The Jennifer Hudson Show, the Detroit Zoo, and Motor City Comic Con, this season truly offered something for everyone—and we were thrilled to conclude it with record ticket sales.
Our artistic leadership continues to guide our orchestra to new heights. In addition

Erik Rönmark President and CEO

to the inspiring vision of Jader and Terence, we were honored to welcome Principal Pops Conductor Enrico Lopez-Yañez and Principal Guest Conductor Tabita Berglund for their first season in their respective roles. We extend our deep appreciation to Na’Zir McFadden for his leadership as Assistant Conductor, and we warmly welcome Ingrid Martin, who has shown exemplary stewardship in that role since the start of 2025–26. We are also delighted to continue the season with our new Composer-in-Residence, Michael Abels, and look forward to building on our momentum with these esteemed leaders.
As we look to what’s ahead—including a multi-year celebration of Classical Roots milestones—we are immeasurably grateful for all who support our vibrant and cherished institution. To our musicians on stage; the staff and crew behind the scenes; our Board of Directors, Trustees, and Governing Members; and our extraordinary community of patrons, donors, and partners—thank you. Together, we sustain a thriving ecosystem of music and engagement for our city and for audiences around the world.

Faye Alexander Nelson Chair, Board of Directors
This year marked incredible progress for the DSO in post-pandemic recovery. Specifically, concert ticket sales exceeded a pre-pandemic high. With the utilization of a small transfer from reserves, the budget was balanced. A continued focus on audience growth and fundraising is essential to success as we move forward.

The endowment continues to grow in both commitments and expected payments. The chart below reflects the endowment’s growth over time, with the increase in permanent capital helping to fund our mission today while ensuring the organization’s sustainability for years to come.

BLUES SYMPHONY
THE DETROIT SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA’S HISTORIC
In March 2025, we built upon our storied history of recordings with the release of Wynton Marsalis’s Blues Symphony on the Pentatone label. Recorded in Orchestra Hall in December 2023, the album marked Music Director Jader Bignamini’s first commercial recording with the orchestra.
A triumphant ode to the power of the blues and the scope of America’s musical heritage, the seven-movement work was met with great critical acclaim from sources including The New

York Times, Gramophone, and BBC Music Magazine.

With this release, we also launched the Gold Record Collective, a donor society that fuels the DSO’s artistic journey, supporting landmark recordings and establishing the DSO’s reputation on the global stage.
The collective was commemorated in February with a record launch party at Third Man Records, with whom we collaborated with for a limited-edition vinyl pressing of the album, featuring original jacket art by artist Judy Bowman.
At the launch party, Gold Record Collective members and supporters enjoyed a tour of the pressing process and a panel discussion with Concertmaster Robyn Bollinger alongside Blanton Alspaugh (Producer) and Mark Donahue (Engineer) of Soundmirror.
MARSALIS SYMPHONY
HISTORIC FIRST RECORDING WITH JADER BIGNAMINI
In September, we hosted a Detroit Month of Design event where participants engaged with the recording by contributing to a large-scale collage inspired by Judy Bowman’s design for the vinyl cover. Ahead of the collage-making workshop, DSO musicians led a conversation and live demonstration on how color is created in music.
In 2025–26, the recording legacy continues with capture of Off’s Carmina Burana, Marsalis’s Swing Symphony with the Paradise Theatre Big Band, and the new suite from Omar by Rhiannon Giddens and Composer-in-Residence Michael Abels for future release.

“WINDS, STRINGS, AND PERCUSSION ALL HIT THEIR MARKS WITH CONFIDENCE DURING THE FIRST MOVEMENT. AND THE CONDUCTOR, JADER BIGNAMINI, KEEPS THINGS SPRIGHTLY; WHEN THE MOVEMENT’S CLIMAX WANTS EXTRA DYNAMIC PUNCH, HIS PLAYERS STILL HAVE SOMETHING TO GIVE. THAT HIGH LEVEL OF EXECUTION IS EVIDENT THROUGHOUT THIS PERFORMANCE OF THE HOURLONG WORK.”
-

OPENING NIGHT GALA
On September 28, 2024, we celebrated our second consecutive Opening Night Gala with an unforgettable night of music and festivities. Music Director Jader Bignamini and the DSO welcomed GRAMMY® Awardwinning saxophonist Branford Marsalis as soloist for John Williams’s Escapades from Catch Me If You Can and Darius Milhaud’s Scaramouche. The program also included Rhiannon Giddens and
Michael Abels’s Overture from Omar, Leonard Bernstein’s Three Dance Episodes from On the Town, and George Gershwin’s An American in Paris. Preceding the gala on September 26 and 27, Bignamini and Marsalis presented Bernstein & Gershwin, which featured several of the same works by Milhaud, Bernstein, and Gershwin, plus Gershwin’s Cuban Overture. See page 36 for more information.

WOODWARD STRING QUARTET
Concertmaster Robyn Bollinger, Associate Concertmaster
Kimberly Kaloyanides Kennedy, Principal Viola Eric Nowlin, and Principal Cello Wei Yu have united to form the Woodward String Quartet. Away from their chairs in the orchestra, DSO musicians are remarkable players in solo and chamber settings. As leaders in the orchestra, the members of this quartet are prime examples.
They made their Detroit debut in November 2024 with a performance in the Peter D. and Julie F. Cummings Cube. Eastward View opened with Haydn’s “Sunrise” Quartet Op. 76 No. 4, followed by Debussy’s String Quartet, and concluded with String Quartet No. 1 by Michigan artist Zhou Tian.

SPOTLIGHT:
150TH ANNIVERSARY OF CARMEN
In celebration of 150 years of George Bizet’s iconic masterwork Carmen, the DSO and Music Director Jader Bignamini presented a concert performance of the opera. For this special performance, we welcomed J’Nai Bridges to sing the role of Carmen, Russell Thomas as Don José, Ailyn Pérez as Micaëla, Paulo Szot as Escamillo, Meghan Picerno as Frasquita, Leonardo Neiva as Morales and Dancairo,

PNC POPS SERIES
Highlights of the PNC Pops Series include The Music of StarWars,Music of the Knights, La Vida Loca, The Music of Queen, and Broadway Love Songs. Many showstopping guest artists shined in these programs, including Under the Streetlamp with former cast members from the hit musical Jersey Boys; Celtic Journey featuring authentic Irish music conducted by Ernest Richardson and featuring Susanna Perry Gilmore (fiddle), William Coulter (guitar), and Tomáseen Foley (Irish storyteller); Let’s Misbehave: The Songs of
Cole Porter featuring pianist Tony DeSare, trombonist Aubrey Logan, and tap dancer John Manzari; and Ben Folds in a program of genrecrossing favorites. The beloved Home for the Holidays concerts returned, conducted by Principal Pops Conductor Enrico Lopez-Yañez.

SPOTLIGHT:
WOMEN ROCK!
Rock ‘n roll was shaped by many iconic women over the years, and the DSO rocked out to just a few of these leading ladies’ songs in April. Women Rock! featured hits by Carole King, Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, Pat Benatar, Tina Turner, and more. To promote this program, DSO administrative staff channeled their inner rock stars and created a music video for the ultimate office mixtape. To keep the fun going after opening night of this program, the DSO hosted Women Rock: After Dark, the inaugural event of our new After
Dark post-concert signature event series. The afterparty featured DJ Thornstryker, the first female NBA DJ for the Pistons, and an interactive art activity facilitated by the College for Creative Studies. Additional activations were hosted by Rebel Nell, the Peacock Room, the Velvet Tower, and Venla’s.

PARADISE JAZZ SERIES
The Paradise Jazz Series celebrated its 25th year honoring the legacy of the Paradise Theatre, the historic Detroit jazz venue that was on the site of Orchestra Hall from 1941–1951. The six programs in this series showcased a diverse range of styles with performances by Terence Blanchard (Fred A. Erb Jazz Creative
Director Chair), Chucho Valdés Royal Quartet, Cyrus Chestnut and friends, musicians from the SFJAZZ Collective, Ron Carter Quartet, and Cécile McLorin Salvant (above). Jazz events this season also celebrated the future of the art form, with opener performances by Civic Jazz Ensemble students.

SPOTLIGHT:
RON CARTER QUARTET
In April, Ron Carter and his quartet visited Orchestra Hall for an unforgettable evening. The Detroit native is one of the most prolific and influential jazz bass players of all time, attributed to being the most recorded jazz bassist with over 60 years of experience under his belt. Cater has recorded with fellow jazz legends including Miles Davis, Lena Horne, Bill Evans, B.B. King, and Cannonball Adderley. He was joined by drummer Payton Crossley, tenor saxophonist
Jimmy Greene, and pianist Renee Rosnes, a collective with whom Carter has toured globally and collaborated on numerous recording projects. It was a magical evening as Carter shared the legacy of the era of jazz that built the Paradise Theatre.

SPECIAL PROGRAMMING
We presented a wide array of memorable programs this season, captivating audiences with energizing and immersive musical experiences. To kick off a season of specials, the DSO played alongside the Icelandic rock band Sigur Rós at the Masonic Temple in September. In May, David Bowie’s closest collaborators including Donny McCaslin, Jason Lindner, Tim Lefebvre, and Gail Ann Dorsey joined the DSO in Orchestra Hall for Blackstar Symphony, which featured Bowie’s final album, Blackstar, and other hits. In June, mandolinist Chris Thile presented
his brand-new work, ATTENTION! A narrative song cycle for extroverted mandolinist and orchestra, engaging the audience with whimsical storytelling. The DSO joined forces with the Detroit Pistons in June to present A Night with the Orchestra: A Special J Dilla Tribute to a sold-out crowd featuring Detroit’s own Big Sean (above).

Throughout the season, the DSO presented six movie experiences with the orchestra playing the score live to film. Highlights included Batman 1989, with Batman’s arrival summoned by the Bat Signal on Orchestra Hall’s facade in partnership with Motor City Comic Con; and The Lion King, with handson education stations, takeaway arts and crafts, and an African drumming circle before the concert in Sosnick Courtyard, in partnership with the Detroit Zoo. Our Sosnick Courtyard was also home to a free outdoor festival, made possible by the Gilbert Family Foundation. Over
two weeks, performances featured a DSO chamber ensemble, Yoga & Music, Allen Dennard’s “Decades Through Detroit,” Audivi, a sensoryfriendly concert presented by Joe Reilly Music, Audra Kubat’s “Stories Through Song and Poetry,” the Detroit Jazz City Orchestra Plus, and performers from the 34th Annual Concert of Colors.

CIVIC YOUTH ENSEMBLES
PART
OF THE WU FAMILY ACADEMY FOR LEARNING AND ENGAGEMENT
The DSO’s Civic Youth Ensembles (CYE) continue to support the growth of students of all ages through performance and development opportunities. In 2024–25, CYE served 573 students (an 8% increase from 2023–24) and 211 adults across 15 ensembles, representing 147 zip codes. 19% of students were from Detroit and 28% received scholarships, reflecting the program’s ongoing commitment to access and inclusion. CYE musicians participated in 605 rehearsals and coachings with teaching artists, and the Civic Jazz Orchestra performed as the opening act for several Paradise Jazz Series concerts featuring Chucho Valdés,
Terence Blanchard, Ron Carter, and more. Students in CYE and Senza (the DSO’s youth professional development program), participated in 11 professional development sessions, which covered topics from music therapy to financial management. Students exercised their leadership skills by serving as hosts at CYE concerts, volunteering with Detroit Harmony and at Young People’s Family Concerts, mentoring students in early ensembles, designing the concert programs, and curating activities for CYE Fun Days. 91% of CYE students reported that CYE is a positive part of their life.

PNC GROW UP GREAT
This season, PNC Grow Up Great reached new heights. Through the program—in partnership with Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) and the PNC Foundation—we visited 56 schools and all 130 DPSCD pre-K classrooms, engaging 2,423 students in joyful, interactive musical experiences. During each school visit, students and teachers welcome a DSO teaching artist and a DSO musician into their classroom. These interactive visits invite curiosity and encourage students and teachers alike to actively participate by singing, dancing, and clapping. Teachers are supported in implementing these
musical activities into their daily lesson plans to support crucial early childhood education milestones relating to literacy, number recognition, social and communication skills, and more. This functional practice of music helps teachers deliver lessons in an engaging way while laying the foundation for long-term social, academic, and musical success.

YOUNG PEOPLE’S FAMILY CONCERTS & EDUCATIONAL CONCERT SERIES
Through educational and family concerts, thousands of students in Detroit and around the world were introduced to music. In 2024–25, Tiny Tots concerts engaged young children in the Peter D. and Julie F. Cummings Cube, and the Young People’s Family Concert Series brought fun and interactive programs including Symphony Spooktacular and Carnival of the Animals led by DSO Assistant Conductor Na’Zir McFadden and Gold Rush: An American Musical Adventure led by DSO Principal Pops Conductor
Enrico Lopez-Yañez. Across three programs conducted by McFadden and Lopez-Yañez, respectively, the Educational Concert Series reached 12,211 students in Orchestra Hall and 64,000 views globally via Live from Orchestra Hall: Classroom Edition webcasts.

THE DSO AT INTERLOCHEN
The July 2025 residency marked the 99th year of collaboration between the DSO and Interlochen, a relationship that dates back to 1926 when the National High School Orchestra—Interlochen’s founding ensemble—performed at Orchestra
Hall in Detroit. This year’s residency featured DSO musicians leading masterclasses, rehearsing side-byside with students, and performing two concerts under the direction Music Director Jader Bignamini.
“The partnership between the DSO and Interlochen is built on a shared passion for musical education and performance,” said DSO President and CEO Erik Rönmark. “Each summer, our musicians are energized by the talent and dedication of the students, and we are proud to play a role in shaping their artistic journeys”
-ERIK RÖNMARK, PRESIDENT AND CEO
LEARNING AND ENGAGEMENT AT THE MAX
Learning & Engagement at the DSO continues to empower people to experience their world through music with person-centered programming. Engagement programs increased by 13%, from 186 events and performances in 2023–24 to 211 in 2024–25. 59% of these events were in Detroit and nearly 10,000 people attended. Other highlights include 8 non-clinical music therapy group sessions with students who are autistic, 21 bucket band workshops, a student performance at COTS Peggy’s Place (a family-only emergency shelter),
the Alternatives for Girls summer camp (where 50 students wrote and performed songs), and Sensory-Friendly Concerts (designed for people on the autism spectrum or with other sensory sensitivities) with record attendance of 200. The Middle School Honor Days program saw continued growth, increasing from 2 to 3 full days and welcoming 826 students (up from 600 last season) to The Max, culminating in performances on the Orchestra Hall stage to a full house of family and friends.

IN THE COMMUNITY
DETROIT STRATEGY
The DSO continues participation in the growth and well-being of Detroit across key focus areas including Early Childhood, Students, Workforce Development, Health and Services, and Detroit Events.
DETROIT HARMONY
Detroit Harmony provides instruments for Detroit students while fostering music education and workforce development. In 2024–25, we expanded partnerships and reached 3683 instruments received, 2164 instruments distributed, and 952 instruments repaired. At the Detroit Harmony Building, a concert clothing closet debuted, providing Detroit Harmony partner organization students with needed concert apparel.
DETROIT NEIGHBORHOOD INITIATIVE
We collaborated with local partners to co-create free family-friendly concerts at Redeemer Presbyterian Church and St. Hedwig Catholic Church, plus summer festival appearances in Northwest Goldberg, Chandler Park, Clark Park, and Southwest Detroit.

WILLIAM DAVIDSON NEIGHBORHOOD CONCERT SERIES
The William Davidson Neighborhood Concert Series celebrated 14 incredible years of performances in Metro Detroit neighborhoods this season. From January through July, the series brought DSO performances to Plymouth, Farmington Hills, Southfield, Grosse Pointe, and Beverly Hills. The concerts featured renowned soloists from DSO musicians and guest artists alike. Soloists from the orchestra included Kimberly Kaloyanides Kennedy (Associate Concertmaster, Schwartz and Shapero Family Chair), Hannah Hammel Maser (Principal Flute, Alan J. and Sue Kaufman and Family Chair), and Amanda Blaikie (Flute, Morton and Brigitte Harris Chair), and guests included
violinist Maria Ioudenitch and violist Jordan Bak. These performances were led by Na’Zir McFadden (Assistant Conductor and Phillip & Lauren Fisher Community Ambassador) and guests Jeannette Sorrell and François López-Ferrer. The programs included familiar selections from some of the most beloved composers in the classical repertoire including Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach, while making space for new musical voices—Jessie Montgomery and Carlos Simon—to shine.

The DSO has a long history of traveling in support of our Music Director, while serving as ambassadors for our orchestra and Detroit. In January 2025, we officially relaunched this tradition with a trip to Palermo, Italy. We are now excited to introduce
Principal Journeys, a travel program that brings together dedicated supporters of the DSO for unforgettable musical and cultural experiences centered around a shared passion of sustaining a world class orchestra for our city and global community.

OPENING NIGHT GALA
In September, Detroit’s premier black-tie gala experience returned for the second time since 2003 following a successful reinauguration last season featuring YoYo Ma. The 2024–2025 Opening Night Gala featured acclaimed saxophonist Branford Marsalis and the DSO under the baton of Jader Bignamini, and the illustrious evening included a red-carpet entrance with photo opportunities, cocktail reception, formal seated dinner for gala supporters, and afterparty. This year’s Opening Night Gala raised over $1.1 million in support of the DSO’s mission to ensure young people have access to music education and a path to all that is possible.

The DSO’s Planned Giving Council recognizes the region’s leading financial and estate professionals whose current and future clients may involve them in their decision to make a planned gift to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Members play a critical role in shaping the future of the DSO through ongoing feedback, working with their clients, supporting philanthropy and attending briefings twice per year.
