Hip Hop: A Cultural Phenomenon originating in the 1970s within the Black and Afro-Caribbean communities has revolutionized not only music, but also the cultural landscape. Rooted in spoken-word poetry, DJing, breakdancing, and graffiti art, hip hop provided a platform for marginalized voices to be heard.. Artists like Grandmaster Flash, Public Enemy, KRS One, Run DMC, Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G, propelled hip hop into a global phenomenon.

UNCLE P Detroit's Hip Hop Guru On our companion podcast, In Conversation w/Angela T. Jones, Diarra P. Collazo, also well known as Uncle P, is a heavy hitter in the Detroit Hip-Hop scene. As an influencer to not only the industry but the culture, he shares his views about the industry, as it stands today, and he drops several gems on this episode based on his expertise and passion for the industry.

As we celebrate Black Music Month and for the first time as a federal holiday, Juneteenth, I'd like to encourage people to diversify their musical interests across genres and learn about pioneers and icons they may not be familiar with. This is important to do because in spite of what a segment of the population wants us to believe, Black History IS American History and therefore, Black music is American Music. There isn't a genre of music in America that wasn't either created or improved upon by Black people. So as you listen to your summer playlist, add some Tina Turner and Niles Rogers to it.

I predict that the introduction of AI, and that it allows people to edit and then share songs with a different vocalist or lyrics, is going to result in activism towards having copyright laws modified to allow artists to copyright their voices in addition to the current laws that protect music. I'm in favor of such changes, because some of what makes artists successful is the cadence and tone of their voices, not just the songwriting and production.

Music is a universal language and more international artists are coming to America to perform live. AfroBeats has developed into a very notable genre for African and African American artists during the several years. With artists like Beyoncé and Brandy having hit song collaborations with AfroBeats artists, they're gaining a huge presence and recognition on mainstream platforms that highlight pop music, R&B and hip hop and at awards shows. I predict more collaborations on the horizon as African American artists become more open and connect more deeply with their culture and ancestry.

In this issue we hope that you discover someone of interest whose music resonates with you and if you know of artists, songwriters and producers, who would benefit from being included in this annual publication, make sure you nominate them next year.

My life and the ups and downs of the experiences I live.

How has your musical style evolved over time?

My music has evolved simply by me becoming am actual musician, learning how to play instruments and becoming a producer. I've also evolved by touching on topics in my writing that I feel the whole world can relate to.

What message or impact do you hope your music has on listeners?

The message I want to send to listeners is that they’re not alone in their experiences in life and that its okay to be honest no matter how ugly the truth is.

IT OFTEN RQUIRES A COMBINATION OF TALENT, HARD WORK, MAKING YOURSELF VISIBLE AND BEING RESPECTFUL IN YOUR APPROACH. STAY FOCUSED, BE TRUE TO YOURSELF AND YOUR MUSIC, AND KEEP PUSHING FORWARD TOWARDS YOUR GOALS.

BE PERSISTENT The music industry is challenging and competitive. Stay committed to your passion, be open to learning and adapting, and persevere through setbacks. It takes time and dedication to make progress, so don't get discouraged easily.

SEEK PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE Consider working with an artist manager, agent or mentor that can provide guidance, help you navigate the industry, and connect you with opportunities. Their expertise can be invaluable to your journey. Keep in mind, especially if you're new to the industry that you have to let the pros be the pros. Your goal is to learn and ask plenty of questions along the way.

PROMOTE YOURSELF Utilize various platforms to showcase your music and create an online presence. Ise social media, create a website, and distribute your music on platforms like Spotify, Soundcloud and YouTube. Engage with your audience and develop a strong brand identity.

BUID A STRONG NETWORK Connect with other musicians, producers and industry insiders. Attend local music events, join online communities, and collaborate with other artists. Building relationships can open doors to opportunities and valuable guidance.

I am interested in doing all kinds of music as long as it glorifies the Lord.

I want to motivate the masses! I want to motivate an inspire them! I want people everywhere to know that it’s ok to live right! There is so much negativity that goes on and I hope I inspire people to spread their positive light. JUNETEENTH: A CELEBRATION OF FREEDOM & EMANCIPATION

This annual celebration, observed on June 19th, marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.

Juneteenth serves as a reminder of the progress made in the pursuit of equality and justice, while also highlighting the work that still lies ahead.

Historical Background: On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and proclaimed the end of slavery, effectively enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issues by President Abraham Lincoln two and a half years earlier. This news reached the enslaved African Americans in Texas, making them among the last to be informed of their freedom. Juneteenth emerged as a day of jubilation, marking the beginning of a new era for Black Americans.

Embracing Freedom and Identity: Juneteenth became a symbol of freedom, resilience, and unity within African American communities across the United States. From its roots in Texas, the celebration spread to other states and

gained prominence in the early 20th century. African Americans seized the opportunity to commemorate their ancestors struggles and achievements while affirming their cultural heritage and identity.

Cultural Significance and Traditions: Juneteenth celebrations are characterized by a variety of activities that honor African American culture and heritage. Festivities often include parades, concerts, cookouts, storytelling, poetry readings, art exhibits, and historical reenactments. Traditional foods such as barbecued meats, red drinks (like hibiscus tea or strawberry soda), and soul food dishes like collard greens and cornbread are enjoyed.

Additionally, educational programs, lectures, and community discussions are organized to promote awareness and understanding of African American history and achievements.

The Ongoing Struggle for Equality: While Juneteenth is a celebration of progress, it also serves as a reminder of the challenges that persist in the pursuit of equality and justice.
