A Message from the
President
Dear Alumni, Friends, and Benefactors of Detroit Catholic Central, If a CC alumnus were to come back and spend a day in classes at his alma mater, he would notice a transformation in how lessons are presented. This marks the fifth year that students have not had traditional textbooks. The days of 80 pound freshmen carrying book bags weighing more than they do are long over. Each classroom is equipped with computers and projectors. Our current campus in Novi has never seen a piece of chalk. Students often turn in assignments electronically. Digital textbooks offer all kinds of advantages, including: videos, word definitions, practice quizzes, and tests. While modes of instruction, learning, and assessment have developed along with technology, some parts of the CC experience remain the same. An alumnus spending the day at his alma mater would still find an intense spirit of brotherhood, an intense love for the school and its culture, and a devotion to Catholic values that have been part of Catholic Central since the school was founded in 1928. One of our alumni, Kevin Roberts ’87, published a book, Movers, Dreamers, and Risk-Takers: Unlocking the Power of ADHD. In it he describes how Basilians who had taught him at Catholic Central (Fathers Donoher, Menner, and Wheeler) used teaching methods that were efficacious for students such as himself, who were prone to distraction, who had excess energy, and who needed to get out of their desks and move around the room, before ADHD was diagnosed to the extent it has been more recently. Our current Men of Catholic Central benefit from various levels of academic support. Faculty use diverse methods of instruction and assessment. Some students benefit from peer tutoring, especially from CC brothers who have been inducted into the National Honor Society. We have a Learning Strategies Center which offers additional support to students of various backgrounds every period of the day, under the guidance of learning coaches (young men prefer to see a coach than a specialist, so I have used the word “coach”) Mrs. Swindall and Mrs. Gatt. I recall, the first year we began the center, seeing a Boys’ Bowl sign in the gym which said, “Mrs. Swindall, where were you when I was a freshman?” The life experience of a fourteen-year-old in 2017 is quite different than that of teenagers from previous generations. We adults over a certain age are immigrants in the world of technology, while our students are natives. Our task as educators is constantly evolving as a result of changing requirements from universities, rapidly advancing technologies, and changes in family structure and the culture from which our students come to us. Yet some things remain constant and will never change as part of the CC experience: a strong and immeasurable bond of brotherhood, a fidelity to CC traditions such as Boys’ Bowl week, DRIVE, fidelity to the school as expressed in our symbols (the crest, the Shamrock, the colors “valiant blue and peerless white”, the alma mater…) Above all, we continue to be dedicated to our faith in Jesus Christ, our celebration of the sacraments, our devotion to our patroness, Mary Alma Mater, and the implementation of the Gospel into every aspect of our lives. In Jesus’ Name,
Fr. John B. Huber, C.S.B., Ed.D. President

Letters to the Editor from CC Alumni
The best teacher I ever had Our alumni often reflect on their days at Catholic Central, and how those lessons learned in the halls of CC helped guide them long after they graduated. Here are two letters Fr. Raymond Paramo, Editor-in-Chief, received recently. -Ed.
John Kessel ’61 joined me on a visit to the old CC at 6565 West Outer Drive on May 5th of this year. I had John for American History in room 211 of this building when I was a sophomore. The first picture is taken in the stairwell/hallway directly outside Room 211, where we had the discussion of my lifetime, which I will elaborate on below. This discussion formed the kind of father I have become, and my children have seen the benefits of this discussion. His class in American History was the only class I had ever failed, and it was just before my dad’s passing. I went into the hall outside his classroom upon finding out I would be getting that dreaded F and said to him (I was 15 and knew everything of course), “I thought we are friends.” His response was, “We ARE friends, and that is why I gave you an F. If I were another teacher, and we were not friends, I might have given you a passing grade, as another teacher might not care. Did you do the work?” I said, “Well, no...” He said, “Well, there you have it.” John Kessel is a big reason why I value my time at CC. Sincerely, Jack Alexander ’73
From Brian Norton, September 8, 2017, on Facebook [Brian was in the class of 1983. He withdrew from CC in 1982.] Dear Fr. Paramo, I was just reading, in the New York Times, a long sad article about Michigan’s educational transformation and not for the better. I thought about CC’s migration from West Outer Drive, just before I started there, to Redford, and then to Novi. I think you were all way ahead of the curve, being proactive about the future of education. I don’t say it much, but I want to thank you in particular, and all the other teachers at CC for providing me with a tremendous foundation of education. I was a piece of work in my teens, but am glad for all that you and the other teachers did for me. I use Facebook rarely. Please stay in touch. Brian

New Student Club Honors CC Veterans Newly Founded Shamrocks for Veterans Student Organization to Honor CC Vets with Permanent Campus Veterans Memorial Since its founding on Harper Avenue in 1928, Detroit Catholic Central High School has produced many veterans who have given their lives in service to our great country but who have also thus far not been adequately recognized for their sacrifice in the United States Armed Forces. The “Lest We Forget” Veterans Memorial, currently being installed in the woods adjacent to the new north parking lot, will consist of a garden with benches for prayerful contemplation and a life-size sculpture of Christ embracing a soldier. The Shamrocks for Veterans Student Organization, led by Hayden Kibbey ’19 and teacher-moderator Kevin Griffin ’96, invites all Shamrock families to the dedication of this long-overdue tribute on Memorial Day 2018. Hayden is currently pursuing his Eagle Scout Rank through the implementation of this Veterans Memorial. The “Lest We Forget” Veterans Memorial will stand as an honor to those who have sacrificed of themselves so that we might be able to pursue life, liberty, and happiness as we continue to learn Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge in His image. If you would like to contribute to this project, please contact the Alumni Office at (248) 596-3838, or make checks payable to Detroit Catholic Central High School (with a notation for the Veterans Memorial Project). Please also feel free to contact Hayden Kibbey ’19 or Kevin Griffin ’96 at kgriffin@catholiccentral.net for details about his worthy endeavor.

Spotlighting Alumni & Members of Our CC Family
Ford’s Garage Restaurant - Billy Downs ‘84 CC Alumni Unite to Open Ford’s Garage The Ford’s Garage restaurant pays tribute to a true American legend, Henry Ford, and the heritage of the Ford Motor Company. The original Ford’s Garage opened in 2012 in Historic Downtown Ft. Myers, Florida, just minutes away from where Henry Ford and Thomas Edison spent their winters. Ford Motor Company worked strategically and patiently in the development of a flagship Ford’s Garage near Ford’s World Headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. In 2014, Billy Downs ’84 was selected to be the owner/operator of the business. Billy worked hand in hand with Ford Land Development to identify and develop this restaurant. After several years of hard work, Ford’s Garage (Dearborn) opened on July 5, 2017. Ford’s Garage is an “Official Licensee” of the Ford Motor Company. Ford’s Garage combines the look of a 1920s service station with the feel of a modern day “around the corner” prime burger and craft beer joint. Ford’s features a vast selection of craft beers, including many local Michigan beers. With nearly 150 beers and 40 Taps, guests are sure to find the perfect brew to complement their perfect burger. Billy Downs has tapped into some great talent in the opening of Ford’s Garage, Dearborn. First was identifying a great operator. Downs found that in Brian O’Hara ’84 (son of Tim O’Hara ’61). Billy and Brian have been life-long friends. Both Downs’ and O’Hara’s fathers graduated from CC in 1961. After spending parallel careers in restaurants, both Downs and O’Hara found themselves attracted to this unique and exciting concept. Billy Downs says, “It is a privilege and honor for us to be selected to own and operate this concept at this location. Ford is an iconic brand, and we are so blessed to be able to operate the restaurant in Ford’s home town. And Brian O’Hara is one of the finest men that I have ever met.” Billy reached out to another CC grad and friend, Tom Bohland ’85 (Bohland Construction), to assist him in the development, design, and construction of the project.
“Tom is an amazing contractor and has passionate ties to the Ford Motor Company,” Downs said. “Tom’s dad, (the late) Walt Bohland CC ’56, worked for Ford Motor Company for more than 30 years. Tom shares his dad’s love for cars and Ford.” For chef expertise and leadership, Downs sought the experience of Darin Thompson ’86. Darin’s extensive culinary background is coupled with his unique background as a business owner. Darin and his family were the long-time owners of Laffrey’s Steak on the Hearth, Redford, Michigan. For business management of this new venture, Billy selected Jason Sosnowski ’93. Sosnowski brings a strong business management, IT, and human resource background to the team. “Jason is a terrific asset to our team.” Rounding out the CC presence on the Ford’s team is Joseph Bauer ’95. Bauer is a graduate of the School of Hospitality Business at Michigan State University. After a number of years with Brinker International as General Manager of various Chili’s restaurants, Bauer recently joined the team to share in the excitement and growth potential of this brand. Ford’s Garage is located at 21367 Michigan Avenue, Dearborn, Michigan, 48124. It is open for lunch and dinner every day, starting at 10:30 am. (Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.) The official induction ceremony will take place at a “to be determined” Hall of Fame Game sometime in the Spring. The MHSLCA Hall of Fame was founded by lacrosse coaches around the state to formally recognize the dedication and commitment to excellence by the pioneers of the game as well as current coaches and contributors.

In January, CC had a reception and court dedication for legendary basketball coach Bernie Holowicki, and in October, there was a celebration of Tom Mach’s football coaching career at CC.

Both events brought back scores of friends, teammates, and coaches that hadn’t seen each other in years or even decades. Former players and coaches came in from all over the country, and it was inspiring to see how Coaches Holowicki and Mach had made a difference in so many lives that still resonates with those people today. Both coaches have had lives very well-lived, not because of wealth or fame, but because they took their knowledge and skills and used them to make a difference in the lives of others. Like most truly great coaches, their most important lessons weren’t related to the court or field. I still recall Coach Holowicki, in trying to defuse a locker room conflict, introducing us to the Eleanor Roosevelt quote, “Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss

people.” Coach Mach constantly ingrained in us his timeless mantras about self-belief and positive thinking and occasionally used historical and theological references like St. Francis of Assisi’s guidance to, “Preach the gospel, and when necessary use words.” Those are influential words to 16 and 17-year-old minds. I still find myself using their slogans and lessons when facing a challenge in my life or during the years spent coaching my own kids in youth sports.

LEGACY SOCIETY A Year-End Tax Strategy - In A Booming Market
Dear Alumni, Many of us write charitable donation checks or donate on-line at this time of the year. WAIT! Before writing that check or charging your credit or debit card, look at your stock portfolio. 2017 has been a bull market like we haven’t seen in many years. Your stocks and mutual funds have most likely increased significantly in value. So, if you are thinking of selling some of these stocks at the top of the current market, have you thought of the significant tax benefits of donating stock to CC as part of your charitable giving process? If donating stock rather than cash to Catholic Central is a big tax benefit to you, then which shares does one donate? May I suggest that you look at those stocks which you have held long-term, i.e. over one year. Which ones have gone up significantly to the point that you want to sell them since you feel they may have peaked, or may be due for a fall, or are up and are paying minimal or no dividends? Remember, donating long-term appreciated stock gives you a Double Tax Benefit: avoiding the capital-gains tax on appreciation PLUS deducting the stock’s full market value! Long-term appreciated stock may be the method you have been seeking for quite some time to now include CC in your charitable giving or to increase your current financial commitment to CC. Therefore, may I suggest you do the following: • Select which long-term stock(s) you wish to sell. • Calculate the capital gains savings plus the tax savings from the full market value deduction if you were to donate rather than sell. • Based on the savings, determine the dollar amount, i.e. number of shares of selected long-term stock(s) you wish to donate to Catholic Central. • Contact Rudy Seichter ’59 at (248) 596-3845 or CC Director of Finance Michael Wilson at (248) 596-3899 to receive the transfer of stock procedure. • Contact your broker to transfer the number of shares of your selected stock(s) to CC. Upon receipt of the transferred securities, Catholic Central will issue an acknowledgement letter confirming receipt of your stock(s) transfer. The acknowledgement letter will include the name(s) of the stock(s), number of shares, donation value, and date of your gift. Bottom line, with the current state of the stock market, donating long-term appreciated stock may be an excellent avenue to support CC in a significant way while gaining significant tax savings. Now may be the best time for you to execute this strategy in your charitable giving. Note: As always, visit with your tax/financial advisor(s) before taking any financial action.

Fr. Paramo, C.S.B. Celebrates the 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS ARRIVAL
AT
CATHOLIC
CENTRAL
On September 17th at 10:00 am, a Mass and breakfast were held to celebrate the 50 years that Fr. Ray Paramo, C.S.B. has lived and worked at CC. Family, friends, and former students came from as far away as Texas, Colorado, and Montana to be with him. The Basilian Fathers at CC concelebrated Mass with their confrere. The event began with the singing of the Alma Mater led by Tom Sklut ’69 and his wife, prominent musician and theatrical director, Mary Rashid. Tom gave an introductory tribute which set the tone for the occasion. Fr. Paramo delivered a homily on Christian forgiveness that spoke clearly about the state of the world 50 years ago and today and our place in it as Christians. For those who asked about it, the homily is available on the Aluminator website by typing www.catholiccentral.net/paramohomily or by using the QR code.* Fr. John Huber, C.S.B., CC President, spoke of Fr. Paramo’s years at CC and presented him with a statue of St. Basil as a commemoration of his service. Tim Dodson ’72 gave an oral tribute at the end of Mass which described many of the charisms of the Basilian mission at CC. The text of that tribute appears on the CC website along with the written tributes submitted for the Aluminator article in the Fall 2017 issue. Type www.catholiccentral.net/paramo or use the QR code.* Mass was followed by a breakfast beautifully laid out on tables in the lobby. Those that were able to stay spent a pleasant morning renewing old friendships and reminding Fr. Paramo of their exploits when they were his students.

CC Christmas Concert Nativity Scene Gets Refurbished by Jerry Belian ‘58
Volunteer workers took the original unfinished plywood structure and applied a coating resembling stone to the surface of its four walls. After painting the surfaces, they applied a coating of straw/moss to the roof surface and a cloth-like netting to the underside of the roof. Also added was a loft with a straw covering and an access ladder for dimensional effect. A sturdy stand was added to the roof to support the Angel above, rather than it being positioned on the lower level. Three spotlights were also added to negate some of the shadows noticed in the previous display. The figurines have stayed constant, and with safe handling, they and the structure should last quite a long time. The workers involved were CC parents Nancy and Carl Redner, Denise and George Clayborn, and CC grandparents, Dr. Sally and Jerry Belian ’58. The Redners covered the cost of all the materials added (paint, fabric, bolts, additional wood, and the three new stage lights), and they provided a work area in their pole barn to effect the transition of the Nativity Scene, as well as transporting structural sections to and from their Hartland property.

A Christmas reflection by Fr. William Riegel, C.S.B.
We are all familiar with the beginning chapters of Luke’s Gospel — the parallel birth stories of John and Jesus. But it dawned on me several years ago that these profound stories center on two of the great women of the gospel: Elizabeth and Mary. Each plays a critical role in God’s plan. It is through these two women that God accomplishes salvation in Jesus. It constantly amazes me that God, creator and sustainer of all life, “depends” on humans to give assent to His plan. Or as I like to say, “God waits for our response.” Nothing is forced on us. Ah, the gentleness and love He has as He invites us to return His love freely. The Christmas story challenges us that, we too, are part of the marvelous plan of salvation — not simply on the sidelines but very much in the game, involved in the action. Christmas is also a time to reflect on the women in the story — our story. How critical they are both in God’s plan and our own. Our school is under the protection of THE woman of the New Testament — Mary, Mother of the Church and Detroit Catholic Central. We cannot imitate her childbearing, but we can certainly emulate her faith. Remember, Mary had to first conceive her Son in faith before she was able to conceive Him in her womb. While we focus on Mary and Elizabeth, I am also reminded of the great contribution of the women of Detroit Catholic Central: these smart, articulate, competent women who are among us but whose tremendous contribution is often not fully acknowledged. Yet, they are essential in fulfilling our mission of “Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge.” This is true in all areas of school life whether it be in or out of the classrooms. The Holy Father has commented: “If we hope for a new and living chapter of faith, we will not get it without the women.” So, as we honor Elizabeth and Mary Alma Mater, let us pray in thanksgiving before this newborn King for these women of Detroit Catholic Central and for their presence among us.
The Visitation There is a wall of flesh before the eyes Of John, who yet perceives and hails his King. It is Our Lady’s painful bliss to bring Before mankind the Glory of the skies. Her cousin feels her womb’s sweet burden rise And leap with joy, and she comes forth to sing, With trembling mouth, her words of welcoming. She knows her hidden God, and prophesies. Saint John, pray for us, weary souls that tarry Where life is withered by sin’s deadly breath. Pray for us, whom the dogs of Satan harry, Saint John, Saint Anne, and Saint Elizabeth. And, Mother Mary, give us Christ to carry Within our hearts, that we may conquer death. -- Joyce Kilmer
Like Mary, we want to be a Church which serves, which, like Mary in her journey to Elizabeth, goes forth from its chapels, its sacristies, in order to accompany life, to sustain hope, to be a sign of unity, we want to be a Church which goes forth to build bridges, to break down walls, to sow seeds of reconciliation. Like Mary, we want to be a Church which can accompany all those ‘pregnant’ situations of our people, committed to life, to culture, to society. This is our most valuable treasure, our greatest wealth and our most precious legacy. We must learn, like Mary, to leave our homes and set out on the path of ‘visitation’. --Pope Francis

National Merit Semifinalists Three Detroit Catholic Central High School students were named Semifinalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Competition. About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, and includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The Semifinalists will have the chance to compete for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million. About 90% of the Semifinalists will earn Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.
Including the three Semifinalists this year, 65 CC students have been named National Merit Semifinalists since 2010. The three Catholic Central students named Semifinalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Competition are: Daniel Mondrusov ’18, Keenan O’Brien ’18, and Jacob Smith ’18.

Shamrock Shuffle Benefits Make-A-Wish For 30 years, the Catholic Central family has been participating in a 1.5 mile run for charity known as the Shamrock Shuffle. This year marks the 20th year of our partnership with Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan. On the Friday of Boys’ Bowl Week, CC students, faculty, and staff walked and ran in the Shamrock Shuffle and raised $8,585.26 for Make-A-Wish. In total over 20 years, CC has raised $154,325.00 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan! We would like to thank Mr. Steve Lemieux and Mr. Larry Schulte for organizing this event, Mr. Tony Magni and the Cross Country Team for all of their efforts, and all those who donated for their generosity.

Four Shamrocks Nationally Recognized in 2016-2017 WordWright Challenge by Jake Marmul ’07 The Detroit Catholic Central English Department congratulates the following Schoolwide Champions who earned national recognition in the 2016-2017 WordWright Challenge Reading Comprehension Competition: Adam Brusstar ’17, Robert Crawford ’18, Hayden Kibbey ’19, and Alex Kazmierczak ’20. The WordWright Challenge is a national reading competition for students in grades 9 through 12 that requires analytical reading of many kinds of prose and poetry. It emphasizes perceptive interpretation, sensitivity to language, and an appreciation of style. More than 60,000 students from some of the best public and private high schools in 47 states participated last year. The WordWright Challenge places emphasis on close reading and analysis of many different kinds of texts, and is useful as preparation for the verbal SAT I, the SAT II in English, and the English Advanced Placement exams in language and literature. Texts for the WordWright Challenge can range from short fiction by John Updike or Eudora Welty to poetry as old as Shakespeare’s or as recent as Margaret Atwood’s, to essays as classic as E. B. White’s or as current as cultural commentary in The Atlantic by James Parker. Though the texts vary widely in voice, subject, tone, and length, they have one thing in common: style. They all use language skillfully to convey layers and shades of meaning not always apparent to students on a first or casual reading.
